ESTATE PLANNING MYTHS

For some, estate planning can be quite a confusing topic. The confusing nature of estate planning is often compounded by various estate planning myths that people hear from friends or family members who are not knowledgeable about estate planning law. Below are several of the more common estate planning myths as well as the truth behind them.

 Myth: A Revocable Trust Will Protect My Assets from Creditors A revocable trust is an estate planning tool that provides the owner with many benefits. However, it will not hide or otherwise protect assets from your creditors or liability stemming from lawsuits against you. This is because a person remains in full control of and retains full access to any assets he or she puts into a revocable trust.

 Myth: A Life Insurance Payout Will Not Trigger Estate Taxes All of the assets that you own are included in the value of your estate for estate tax purposes. This necessarily includes the amount of any life insurance policy you owned that will be paid out upon your death.

 Myth: I am Too Young for Estate Planning Individuals should put estate plans in place upon reaching the age of eighteen and continuously update the plan until death. We never know when we will need an estate plan, and delaying planning can often have disastrous consequences.

 Myth: If I Have a Will, My Estate Will Avoid Probate Conversely, all property transferred via a will is guaranteed to go through probate. Through the process of probate, a court oversees the distribution of a person’s estate and ensures the decedent’s wishes, as outlined in the will, are carried out. -Myth: A Life Insurance Payout Will Not Trigger Estate Taxes All of the assets that you own are included in the value of your estate for estate tax purposes. This necessarily includes the amount of any life insurance policy you owned that will be paid out upon your death.

Happy October!

I am excited to share our mouthwatering October "Food and Drink" issue. In this issue, we share an array of culinary delights and experiences to savor, as well as tell the stories of the people, places, and things that make our town so special.

Our cover star needs no introduction - Reba McEntire! We had the privilege of sitting down with the multifaceted singer, actress, and author to dive into her latest book: Not That Fancy: Simple Lessons on Living, Loving, Eating, and Dusting Off Your Boot s. Within the pages of this enchanting book, you'll find a delightful collection of funny, poignant, and deeply personal stories, complemented by stunning photos, lifestyle tips, and mouthwatering recipes that are simply irresistible.

But that's just the beginning of our culinary journey. Join us as we embark on a tour of the 12 trendiest food trucks, explore the freshest farmers markets, and experience the whimsical world of Puffy Cotton Candy. We've done the legwork to bring you the top five local food tours and embarked on a pizza odyssey, tasting our way through 37 local pizza shops, and devouring 67 slices in just 39 days. And if that's not enough to make your taste buds tingle, we've hunted down the city's finest cinnamon rolls and even uncovered the best dining spots for cheering on our Titans at Nissan Stadium. It's a culinary adventure that's as yummy as it gets!

But we also value balance. Discover the popularity of Radish Kitchen's healthy and innovative menu and explore Workout Anytime's state-ofthe-art fitness facility with personal training and indulgent amenities like hydro-massages, red light therapy, infrared saunas, and tanning. Golf enthusiasts, rejoice at The Back Nine Golf's indoor golf simulator facility, where your swing can reach new heights.

We talk with the duo behind Nashville's largest food account, @Nashville_Eats, and invite you to kick back with the literary masterpiece by Franklin's musical legend, Mark Volman. His book,  Happy Forever: My Musical Adventures With The Turtles, Frank Zappa, T. Rex, Flo & Eddie, and More, promises to transport you to a world of musical magic and nostalgia. No matter your age, I'm sure you know the iconic 1960s song “Happy Together” by The Turtles.

Whether it's through culinary exploration, physical wellness, or literary escapes, here’s to a delectable October filled with joy and discovery.

NightLase Laser Snoring Treatment: A Breakthrough Solution for Silent Nights

Snoring can be more than just a noisy annoyance; it can disrupt sleep patterns and strain relationships. For those who suffer from chronic snoring, the search for effective treatments is ongoing. One promising solution that has gained attention in recent years is NightLase Laser snoring treatment. In this article, we will explore what NightLase is, how it works, its benefits, and its potential to provide relief to snorers and their partners.

Understanding Snoring

Before delving into NightLase, it’s essential to understand the underlying causes of snoring. Snoring typically occurs when the airflow through the nose, mouth and throat is partially blocked during sleep. This blockage causes the surrounding tissues to vibrate, creating the familiar snoring sound. Several factors can contribute to snoring, including obesity, nasal congestion, alcohol consumption, and sleep position. While occasional snoring is common, chronic snoring can indicate a more significant issue known as sleep apnea, which can have serious health consequences.

What is NightLase Laser Snoring Treatment?

NightLase is a non-invasive, non-surgical laser treatment designed to address the root causes of snoring. Developed by Fotona, a leading medical laser technology company, NightLase offers a safe and effective way to reduce or eliminate snoring and improve sleep quality.

How NightLase Works

NightLase employs a unique twin laser technology, known as ND:Yagg (Neodymium-Doped Yttrium Aluminium Garnet) and Er:YAG (Erbium Yttrium Aluminum Garnet). This laser technology gently heats and contracts the collagen in the soft tissues of the throat, including the uvula, soft palate and under the tongue, which are often the primary culprits behind snoring. By stimulating collagen production and tightening these tissues, NightLase increases the space for airflow, reducing or eliminating snoring and making daytime breathing easier.

The treatment process is relatively straightforward and does not require anesthesia. A trained Airway dentist uses a handheld device to deliver controlled laser energy to the target areas within the throat. The procedure is painless, with most patients experiencing only mild warmth during the session. Additionally, there is no downtime, allowing patients to return to their normal activities immediately after the treatment.

Benefits of NightLase Laser Snoring Treatment

Non-Invasive: NightLase is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure, eliminating the need for incisions or anesthesia, which reduces the risks and complications associated with surgery.

• Quick and Painless: The treatment is quick, typically lasting around 20-30 minutes, and is virtually painless. Patients can expect minimal discomfort, if any.

• Minimal Downtime: There is no recovery time required, allowing patients to resume their daily activities immediately. High Success Rate: Many patients experience significant improvement in their snoring after just one or two sessions. For some, complete elimination of snoring is achieved.

• Improved Sleep Quality: Not only does NightLase reduce snoring, but it also leads to better sleep quality for both the snorer and their partner. Quality sleep is essential for overall health and well-being.

• Customizable Treatment: NightLase can be tailored to each patient’s specific needs, allowing for personalized treatment plans.

• Long-Lasting Results: While individual results may vary, many patients enjoy long-lasting relief from snoring after completing a series of NightLase sessions.

Is NightLase Right for You?

NightLase is an excellent option for individuals who suffer from chronic snoring and are looking for a non-invasive, effective treatment. However, it’s essential to consult with an experienced and specially trained Airway dentist to determine if NightLase is suitable for your specific case. They can assess your snoring severity and underlying causes to create a personalized treatment plan.

NightLase Laser snoring treatment offers a promising solution for those seeking relief from chronic snoring. With its non-invasive nature, minimal discomfort, and high success rate, NightLase has become a popular choice for both snorers and their partners. If you’re tired of sleepless nights and the strain that snoring can put on your relationships, consider exploring NightLase as a potential solution to help you enjoy quieter, more restful nights and improve your overall quality of life.

Round ‘Em Up!

FARMERS MARKET | FOOD + BEVERAGE
44

Farmers markets are year ‘round fixtures in the Nashville area but their popularity soars in October as it’s the month when milder days and bountiful harvests intersect. And while fresh produce is at or near its peak, there’s much more to be found at your neighborhood market. Beef, chicken, and fish along with fresh bakery items and canned goods typically not found at the local grocer, are readily available. There’s a reason why you might find yourself shopping next to chefs from many of Nashville’s finest restaurants.

Food trucks, crafts and body care products have become farmers market staples as well. While the markets vary in size and scope, they share many common elements. They tap into the desire of the growing number of people who are interested in supporting independent farmers, purchasing locally sourced goods, spending more quality time outside, and eating healthier food. (Although, there’s no shortage of decadent treats at farmers markets either.)

So if you haven’t visited a farmers market this season because the weather has been too this-or-that, now is the time to make your plans. We’ve even come up with this unofficial guide to help you get started.

FRANKLIN FARMERS MARKET

230 Franklin Road

Every Saturday in October, 8 a.m. to Noon

FranklinFarmersMarket.com

Our journey begins close to home at the Franklin Farmers Market, located behind The Factory at Franklin at the corner of Franklin Road and Liberty Pike. This isn’t the largest market in the area but, due to its location and roster of top-quality vendors, it is one of the more popular ones. In addition to fresh-from-the-farm fare, a select number of local crafts makers and artisans are on hand each week as well. The non-profit market seeks to promote local family farms that it deems to be critical to Middle Tennessee’s economic and environmental viability.

7248 Nolensville Road

Every Saturday in October, 8 a.m. to Noon NolensvilleFarmersMarket.com

Located on the site of the historic Nolensville School, the Nolensville Farmers Market has been growing about as rapidly as the rest of the town. It probably has the most rural vibe – or perhaps the least urban – of any of the markets in our roundup. The market emerged from an idea by local doctor Miro Bandalo to better serve the interests of his patients who were seeking a diet that consisted of more natural, locally sourced products.

BONUS MARKET: The Nolensville Farmers Market is produced by WilCo Events, a non-profit that also operates the Westhaven Farmers Market every Wednesday in October from 4 to 7 p.m.

511 Woodland Street

Every Tuesday in October, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. EastNashvilleMarket.com

This massive market boasts upwards of 150 vendors across 19 different categories. So if you like fresh produce, fresh cut flowers, beef/poultry/dairy/seafood, ready-to-eat treats, food trucks and more, you’ll find it here. Something else you’ll find that’s likely just as important: free parking. Two lots are available. One is at the corner of Sixth and Main, the other is across the street at First Church of the Nazarene. The market is associated with two other urban markets.

Richland Park Farmers’ Market at 4711 Charlotte Avenue is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to Noon. The WedgewoodHouston Farmers’ Market at 416 Chestnut Avenue is open every Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Open Daily

The Nashville Farmers’ Market dates to 1801 when farmers used horses to haul their goods into the city. The modern market began to take shape in 1949 with a $1 million bond authorization by the state legislature. In 1995, it was renovated as part of the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park Development. The indoor market is open daily until 6 p.m. and is essentially a food court that specializes in fresh, eclectic local fare. Two open-air farm sheds are where the authentic farmers market action takes place, every Friday-Sunday in October from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Every Thursday in October, 4 to 7 p.m.

TheBellevueFarmersMarket.com

If you’re a farmers market rookie, this attractive Bellevue market is a great place to begin your journey - “starters market,” if you will. It boasts the same caliber of goods as the other markets in the roundup, but it’s smaller, so it's easier to navigate. The entire market can be explored in an hour or less and the adjacent, recently renovated playground makes this perhaps the best option for families with young children. Special promotions are planned throughout October as well.

100 Fifth Avenue North

Tuesday, October 17, 4 to 7 p.m.

FivePointsFranklinMarket.com

This specialty market in downtown Franklin is open for just a handful of dates each year, including Tuesday, October 17. The entire idea behind the market is to provide a midweek gathering place where families and friends can relax, listen to music, and enjoy good, locally grown and sourced food.

STAYING RAD AT RADISH KITCHEN

"Bowls are a great way to eat," says Amanda, "Because for example, you can have a grain, fresh veggies, a creamy hummus, and a delicious protein."

For the nearly 105,000 followers of Amanda Frederickson’s eponymous Instagram account, her two Radish Kitchen restaurants have become mustvisit destinations. “I get DM’s from tourists saying they’re stopping by Radish, and that has been an unexpected and fun surprise,” she says.

Amanda’s star has been rising in the food world since the mid-2000s. She grew up in Florida before there was much of a food movement and gravitated toward cooking. “I first taught myself how to cook by watching The Food Network,” she recalls.

Amanda graduated from Boston University and moved to San Francisco to work in nonprofit fundraising. In 2007, she attended a Super Bowl party dressed in a New York Giants jersey. Luke Smiley, a Washington, D.C. native and graduate of the University of Virginia, was there in his 49’ers shirt. “I saw her and thought, ‘She’s amazing. I have to go talk to her,’” he says. He crossed the room without planning what to say and made a lame joke about her Giants shirt. Little did he know, Amanda’s dad is former New York Giants running back Tucker Frederickson. Luke and Amanda married three years later.

During their time in the Bay Area, they explored the food scene and Amanda experimented with recipes. “California is fertile ground for learning about food and cooking,” she says. “There’s delicious food everywhere.”

While Luke earned his MBA at Stanford, Amanda attended the San Francisco Cooking School. “What really fostered my love for fresh, healthy cooking was my time in the test kitchen, doing catalog work and writing cookbooks for Williams-Sonoma,” she says.

In the meantime, Luke had a successful career in investment banking, hedge funds and private equity. His job with a startup brought the Smileys to Los Angeles, where Amanda’s foodie following continued to grow, then, five and-a-half years ago, they arrived in Nashville for his job at Asurion.

“We never considered opening a restaurant until we moved to Nashville,” says Luke. Their first daughter was born soon after, followed by another daughter eighteen months later. Finding fast-casual food that was fresh and healthy was a challenge. Amanda explains, “I love to cook and I love to eat, but like so many of us, we were strapped for time.” They saw an opportunity to create simple, quality food for people who might not have time to sit in a restaurant.

Their first Radish Kitchen opened in Nashville’s Sylvan Park in 2020, a banner year for the Smileys. “Our youngest child was born in January of that year,” explains Luke, “so we had two kids under two. Amanda authored a cookbook, Simple Beautiful Food , that

was released in March. We opened a restaurant, juggled everything with the pandemic, and I had a full-time job. 2020 was busy!”

A second restaurant opened in Franklin’s McEwen Northside development in 2022.

This past summer, Luke became the company’s full-time CEO, allowing Amanda to focus on recipe development and design. “We play off each other’s strengths which is super important,” she says.

The name Radish came to Amanda one evening while she rocked her oldest daughter to sleep. “I like how it sounds crunchy and fresh, and it works well for branding.” The “Stay Rad” mural on their Nashville location is a popular photo spot and the sweatshirts sell out as soon as they hit their online shop.

Everything served at Radish is made in-house from scratch with the exception of the pitas. Ingredients are sourced from local farms and each day the staff makes marinades and dressings, falafel, cookies, even the frozen yogurt base.

“When I was pregnant, I craved Greek frozen yogurt, which was popular in California, and I missed it,” says Amanda. “When we opened Radish I put it on the menu mostly so I could eat it.” The yogurt is made with vanilla beans and served with local honey or their own magic shell topping. “It has developed quite a cult following,” Amanda laughs.

Plans to open more Radish Kitchens are in the works. “It’s rewarding when customers say ‘thank you’ for bringing us this kind of food,” says Luke. “We hear it every day.” Amanda concurs. “We’re excited to be part of the growth in Williamson County, and, the more Radishes we open, the more access people will have to hearty, delicious food!”  RadishKitchen.com

CHICKEN POT PIE WITH BUTTERNUT SQUASH AND KALE

INGREDIENTS

• 1 Tbs. olive oil

• 1 bunch of kale, stem removed and leaves, roughly chopped

• 4 Tbs. butter

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 mince shallot

• 2 tsp. chopped fresh sage

• Salt and pepper

• 4 Tbs. flour

• 3 cups stock (chicken or vegetables)

• 1/2 butternut squash, diced about 1/2” thick

• 1 cup shredded cooked chicken (from a rotisserie chicken )

• 1 round pie dough (either homemade or store bought)

• 1 egg, mixed with 2 Tbs. water

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 400°F

2. In a medium cast iron skillet warm olive oil over medium heat. Add the kale and saute for about a minute or until the leaves are wilted. Carefully remove from pan.

3. In the same pan melt the butter. Add the garlic, sage, and big pinch of salt and pepper.  Saute for 30 seconds. Add the flour and whisk for about a minute until the flour and butter are incorporated and the mixture has turned a light golden brown.

4. Whisk-in the stock and cook over medium until stock is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.

5. Add the butternut squash, chicken, and sauteed kale back into the pan. Mix well and add another pinch of salt

6. Let the mixture cool slightly.

7. Roll out the pie dough into a 12” diameter circle and about 1/2” thick. Cut medium squares out of the pie dough, about 4” long and 2” wide. Repeat with all the pie dough. Place pie dough squares on top of the pot pie filling, overlapping to create a crust.

8. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

9. Bake the pot pie for about 30 minutes or until the pie dough is golden brown.

10. Let the pot pie cool slightly then serve.

Makes about 4 to 6 servings.

At least nine cuisines and locally inspired flavors await Tennessee Titans fans among concessions at Nissan Stadium. The Titans intentionally incorporate small businesses as food options to support the Nashville community and expand access to quality dining options.

“We aim to offer our fans a true Nashville experience when they step inside Nissan Stadium," says Savanna Howie, Tennessee Titans public relations and corporate communications manager. "From the hallmark hospitality and friendship our city offers to dining at locally owned and operated businesses, we continue to be intentional in creating an authentic fan experience.”

“Giving back to the community is always a top priority for our organization, and our concessions business is no exception. Nissan Stadium welcomes volunteers from local nonprofit organizations at every regular season home game to assist in staffing a variety of our food vendor locations. Volunteering organizations receive a portion of the sales made that day. In 2022, the proceeds for participating nonprofits exceeded $474,000. Those funds can make a big difference for many of these organizations," Savanna adds.

Nashville is home to many barbecue enthusiasts, most namely perhaps, Pat Martin of Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint. Martin’s opened in 2006 in Nolensville, and quickly became a Nashville favorite.

Guests at Nissan Stadium can look forward to smoked Wings, BBQ Nachos, and Martin’s Homemade BBQ Chips with Ranch Dip. Quarterbacking the Martin’s menu is its signature Pulled Pork Sandwich. The restaurant actually smokes all of its meat overnight on location at Nissan Stadium in a rig parked in the middle of North End Zone. Due to the 24-hour period needed to smoke great barbecue, Martin’s has limited quantities for each game.

Gourmet hot dogs are a perfect companion for a fall football game. Fans can check out local business, Daddy’s Dogs. From a classic chili dog to a Mac Daddy dog topped with mac and cheese, sauerkraut and tons of cheddar, these treats take a ballpark classic to a new level.

For game-changing pizza, fans can stop by Slim & Husky’s. Started by Tennessee State University alumni and childhood friends, EJ Reed, Clint Gray and Derrick Moore, Slim & Husky’s has taken the pizza world by storm with unique pies and mouthwatering ‘drizzles.’ The local favorite also recently opened Nashville’s first-ever black-owned restaurant in the Broadway district.

Hot chicken has become as synonymous with Nashville as country music icons, and fans looking for some extra bite can visit locally owned and operated business, Party Fowl. Their signature hot chicken tenders and bourbon-glazed beignets anchor the menu for gamedays and events alike.

For this fall's release, the club is slated to introduce Columbia Blue, a 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Union & Church, a 2021 Cuvée Blanc. Both are Napa Valley wines.

To receive discounted wine shipments and additional lifestyle benefits from this initiative, one must be a member of The Foolish Club. A $50 one-time, non-refundable deposit is processed to secure one's first shipment, and is deducted from that first club shipment cost.

The Foolish Club wines are released in two 3-bottle or 6-bottle shipments each year based on the club level selected. Costs range based on individual selections. The cost of a bottle spans $29 to $75, plus tax and shipping.

Each club shipment for 3-bottle members arrives in a cardboard shipper that can be upgraded to a fire-branded, vintage Tennessee Titans keepsake wooden crate for a discounted price of $25. All club shipments for 6-bottle members arrive in a wooden crate at no additional cost. A portion of the purchases go to the Titans Foundation for community improvements. The Titans Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that also powers ONE Community, the Titans' multi-faceted philanthropic platform that reaches many of Nashville's most underrepresented and marginalized communities with a focus on three areas: Opportunity, Neighborhoods and Education.

Wine selections can be completely customized. New, library and special edition wines are offered. There is no long-term commitment, and club memberships may be canceled at any time.

Club members gain special access to Titans-only events and functions, and receive exclusive access to limited releases and library wines.

Memorable wine-driven gift packages, including items such as branded wine keys and truffles, also can be purchased.

Reba McEntire Gets Back To Basics In Her New Book

Not That Fancy: Simple Lessons on Living, Loving, Eating, and Dusting Off Your Boots

ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

INSPIRED BY | ENTERTAINMENT

Reba McEntire’s impact on country music is nothing short of legendary. Bursting onto the scene in the late 70s, McEntire captured the hearts of fans with her distinctive twang, singing real life lyrics that resonated with listeners. With a career that includes an extraordinary string of number one hits, 56 million albums sold worldwide, Grammy, CMA and ACM awards, and countless accolades, McEntire solidified herself as a true country music luminary.

But her star power didn’t stop there. Beyond her vocal prowess, McEntire’s versatility shone as she ventured into acting, most notably starring in her own successful sitcom Reba from 2001 to 2007, showcasing her comedic talents. Guest starring roles, including more recently ABC-TV’s Big Sky, television movies and Broadway roles, McEntire left an indelible mark in the acting world as well. She can also be seen on the upcoming season of The Voice.

And it doesn’t end there. Besides actress and singer, author is in the famous redhead’s repertoire. She’s set to release a new book this month, Not That Fancy: Simple Lessons on Living, Loving, Eating, and Dusting Off Your Boots, a collection of funny, poignant, and deeply personal stories, photos, lifestyle tips, and recipes. Specifically, Not that Fancy includes over 50 recipes from Reba’s family traditions and her Atoka, Oklahoma restaurant, Reba’s Place, never-before-seen photographs and never-before-told stories from Reba’s personal and professional life, and simple, not-that-fancy lifestyle tips.

Reba will also release an accompanying album with the same title,  Not That Fancy, a collection of stripped-down versions of some of her most iconic songs. The 14-track collection features a brand new single “Seven Minutes In Heaven.”

City Lifestyle had the opportunity to talk to Reba about all of the fun things happening for her in her enduringly enjoyable career.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO WRITE THIS BOOK AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU?

Well, we were just looking for things to do and we thought it would be a great idea to do a coffee table book and then it turned into a coffee table cookbook with lots of great pictures and stories and tips on how to throw an impromptu dinner party. Even Rex coming in with his 10 best favorite horror movies to watch. It’s an eclectic group of pictures, stories, advice, ways to do things. I love it! My attention span is like a twoyear-old so I read it three times to proofread it, and I was totally entertained. If it held my attention, then I hope everyone else can be entertained by it also.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANTED TO SHARE?

It was really a group project. People would ask me questions - I was interviewed by a young lady - it would prompt me to answer them in a story form. What I really wanted is for the recipes to have great pictures. I do not like a cookbook without pictures. I want to see what it’s supposed to look like. I really enjoyed doing it. It was a huge undertaking with a lot of wonderful people involved who had a lot of great ideas that made it happen.

HOW DOES THE CREATIVE PROCESS DIFFER WHEN WRITING A SONG VERSUS WRITING A BOOK?

You have less people working on it, for one thing! And a song is contained in one area and this book is all over the place and different avenues of entertainment.

WHY DID GARTH WRITE THE FOREWORD?

He’s the busiest person on the planet, so I was like, ‘Yes, Garth!” He and I go way back. We’re both from Oklahoma. We toured together in ‘90 and ‘91. He’s a very special person and I couldn’t have been more pleased when he said he’d write the foreword.

AND HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE TITLE? WOULD YOU CONSIDER “FANCY” YOUR BIGGEST HIT?

I would say “Fancy” is my most recognizable song. Everything we do is bells and whistles, smoke and mirrors, big productions and changing outfits. The bigger the better. But this is just about topics not that fancy. Like a dinner party. Or wearing something out to dinner. My philosophy is you be comfortable, you have fun and if you’re uptight and wearing something that’s not comfortable, then you won’t have as much fun. All the topics are simply not that fancy. Just everyday living. Even if the silverware, glasses and plates don’t match, bring out the solo cups. Have fun. Don’t not have a dinner party because you don’t have the right dishes.

YOU’VE DONE IT ALL. AUTHOR, SINGER, ACTRESS. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CREATIVE OUTLET? OR DO YOU LOVE IT ALL?

I do love it all, and I’m very blessed to get to do it all. When I finished my tour in 2022, I got to do television. Last year I was doing Big Sky and touring at the same time. Which was not a good idea, but I did it and it keeps everything interesting. I don’t get tired or bored of one thing. I do it, we finish that and I go do something else. Like The Hammer movie for Lifetime. We finished that and then we went on and did the tour for a while. It keeps things fresh for me. I really enjoy it and I’m so grateful I get to do it like that.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX AND UNWIND? DO YOU TAKE TIME IN BETWEEN ALL THESE THINGS YOU HAVE GOING ON?

If time allows and the calendar is open, I like to vacation, hang out at the house, sit on the back porch. I like to be home and hang out with my friends, family. I’m just like everybody else. Throw a dinner party and have everybody over, eat and play games.

IN YOUR STORIED CAREER, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU HAVEN’T DONE THAT YOU’D STILL LIKE TO DO?

Career-wise, no. Travel-wise, I have not gone to Japan. Niall {Horan} was telling me when we were doing The Voice that it’s his favorite place on earth.

WHAT’S NEXT AFTER THIS BOOK?

I am one of the coaches on The Voice That will wrap in May 2024. Then probably go back out on tour in 2025. Just continuing to do what we love to do.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE SONGS FOR THE ALBUM THAT ACCOMPANIES THE BOOK?

We asked the fans what they wanted us to re-record. Then we added a new song, “Seven Minutes In Heaven.” We wouldn’t be where we are today without the fans. I’m so appreciative of my fans. They’re the best. They’ve been with me through thick and thin and every genre of entertainment you can think of!

SIMULATED GOLF. REALISTIC FUN.

It began in Chattanooga in 2009 when Clinger crossed paths with Scott Lehman, another golf professional. Lehman had just founded In His Grip Golf, a ministry that encourages men to place God at the forefront of life, family and business.

They became more acquaintances than friends and Clinger admits to not thinking much about their relationship or the ministry. Until a few years ago when Clinger moved to Tennessee and reconnected with the ministry. “Once I became involved with In His Grip, the values that the ministry tries to instill started to make sense,” says Clinger.

Golf has been around for centuries. It began in Scotland and by some accounts, the first round in the Americas was played nearly 400 years ago. There’s no denying that the game’s leisurely pace, unforgiving nature and inextricable blend of fellowship and competition contribute to its lure and lore.

All things considered, it’s not a stretch to suggest that golf is, in many ways, a spiritual pursuit. You’ll get no argument from Matt Clinger, a golf professional and franchise owner of The Back Nine (TB9), a recently opened indoor golf experience located at 100 Cool Springs Boulevard.

“I had a recurring dream that I would own my own golf-related business,” says Clinger. “I felt like God gave me that dream, but nothing ever came of it. For years, I tried to do it on my own, but I couldn’t figure it out.”

What ensued was a series of events that occurred organically and led to the realization of that dream. Or maybe, something greater intervened.

The first indication that things were improving came early last year. Clinger received an inquiry from TB9 after posting a message on his LinkedIn page about his ambitions.

Later, there were morning fellowship meetings at local courses, like Towhee Club and The Academy, where Clinger is an instructor. Then came a fateful September day.

“We were at Towhee for the very first of the weekly meetings,” recalls Clinger. “The group heard about my fears, dreams and goals, and they got up and prayed for me. It was their way of showing support to a new guy in a new group. “I turned and faced everyone and said, ‘I’m giving everything back to God because every time I try to do things my way, it doesn’t work!’”

A few weeks later, Clinger was approached by the father of one of his golf students, regarding his dream. Matt told him about TB9 and, soon thereafter, the man became a silent partner in Clinger’s business. “Suddenly, after 10 years of doing things my way, I get involved with In His

Grip, I’m approached by my student’s dad and I get a call from The Back Nine and it’s exactly what I had been looking for,” says Clinger, who owns the company’s first franchise outside of Utah, Nevada or Arizona.

As a 24/7, members-only operation, TB9 is unique in the world of simulated golf. Plans begin at $200 per month and a foursome can play for an entire month for a price that’s comparable to a single round at an upper-tier public course.Members can play more than 275 different courses that are programmed into each of three Trackman Golf simulator bays. They even have control over weather and greens conditions that will affect their performance accordingly.

“What’s crazy about it is the time it takes to play,” says Clinger. “Since you don’t have to walk or chase your ball, a foursome can play 18 holes in about two hours and 20 minutes.”

Players use their own gear and hit real golf balls. Analytics measure technical aspects of each stroke and lessons are available as well. You could say it’s a dream come true.  TheBackNine Golf.com/franklintn

From painting and cleaning to landscaping, staging, photography and both print and social media exposure, Paula and her team understand that going above and beyond for a home’s first impression is fundamental to it’s successful sale. While other real estate companies may offer programs to help get a home ready to market, often the homeowner still finds themselves managing all of the work AND then paying for the services, once the home closes.

With Paula it’s different…. Not only do she and her team manage and schedule everything, but Paula also makes the financial investment into your home by taking care of the fees associated with these services so that your home sells for the absolute maximum, at no additional cost to you, ever.

WORKOUT ANYTIME YOU WANT

Thomas Burns started working out at a young age, and later competed in body building competitions. After earning a college degree in fitness training, he eventually became a certified personal trainer.

“I was training around 70 clients a day, and even though being a personal trainer was great, I needed to find something long term,” he says. “My father, John, always knew my goal was to eventually have my own gym, and with him wanting to retire, he saw an opportunity to still have something to do.”

They looked into different fitness franchises, but none seemed like a good fit until they discovered Workout Anytime. Like its name suggests, it's open to members all day and all night, which allows for a lot of flexibility.

“We work off of three different ideas - that we consistently have a really clean environment, that we're providing the same exact product every time, and that we build relationships with our members,” says Thomas. “It's not just 'hi' and 'bye.' We really get to know our members.” His three-pound Chihuahua, Pearl, also makes members feel welcome.

In addition to workout equipment, cardio machines and weights, Workout Anytime Franklin, which opened this year, offers whole-body pampering. Members have access to hydro-massages, red light therapy, infrared saunas and tanning.

There are two levels of membership – basic, which is $23.00 a month, and gives access to the weight equipment, and premium at $29.99 a month, which provides access to everything, including the ability to visit other locations across the country.

Thomas, along with the other certified personal coaches, enjoys assisting members with reaching their goals. “We find out what they want to accomplish. Do they want to tone up, add muscle or something else? Then we do a 3D body scan which helps us analyze and really break down the different types of body fat they have and what their lean muscle mass is.”

Once they have this data, they start by setting small goals. For example, if someone has 35 percent body fat, the goal is to get that down to 33 percent. Once that’s reached, new goals are set. “With our personal training clients, we build-out full custom workout schedules for the entire week,” he says.

All members get one free personal training session with Thomas. “I really invest my time and go over where they are physically, how we’re going to build a foundation together, how much water they need to drink, and a good food plan – the whole nine yards.” If members want to continue with him after that as a personal client, they can simply buy sets of sessions.

“I get a lot of satisfaction from helping others reach their fitness goals,” says Thomas.  WorkoutAnytime.com/franklin

A Cotton CandyCoated Life

HOW HOLLAND AND BRENDON CURTIS TURNED AN OPPORTUNITY INTO A SWEET DEAL

On a cold December day in 2021, Brendon and Holland Curtis decided to take a walk in downtown Franklin. Little did they know, this walk would spark an idea that would change the course of their lives.

The couple met in Los Angeles in 2018. Two years later they decided to relocate to the Nashville area, where Brendon had previously lived. Brendon’s fondness for, and familiarity with, Tennessee made for an easy transition. They settled in Franklin because they already had family and friends living in the area.

Brendon was a web developer and Holland worked for Belmont University as a fundraising research specialist. “Brendon had always dreamed about owning his own business but it was never the right idea, the right time, or the right financials,” Holland says. That changed when they saw a lady selling cotton candy from a cart in Franklin. Even though it was the day after Christmas, when many were already saturated with holiday treats, and the weather was brisk, there was still a line. Brendon loved cotton candy and wanted to wait in line to get some as well. It was then when he realized he might have stumbled upon a business opportunity.

Brendon and Holland decided to open a cotton candy store so people could be indoors and enjoy the treat. They had rarely seen freshly made cotton candy outside of a county fair, specialty store or an event. As soon as they got home, they ordered a cotton candy machine and poured over YouTube tutorials on how to make it. The couple started to practice when the machine arrived.

Holland saw many videos of people making flower shapes out of cotton candy, a trend particularly popular in

Asia. “I had been playing around with the candy shape and made what looked like a cupcake girl and thought, 'We could make characters,'” Holland says.

One of the hardest things to learn was to craft a character quickly because cotton candy can melt. It took them about seven months to master their character creations, using different flavors and colors. “There was a lot of trial and error,” admits Holland. Luckily, they had a lot of friends and family willing to give them feedback.

The couple then studied how to start a business, and by August 2022, they were negotiating with CoolSprings Galleria Mall for a store location. “Since the mall is nice and cool, people can enjoy their treat longer,” explains Holland.

Their kids even got involved, suggesting names, like Sweet Puffy, which evolved into the current store name, Puffy Cotton Candy. Not everyone was convinced this was a good idea, but the couple believed otherwise. They made it a reality on November 11 of 2022, less than a year from its conception. “The best advice that I could offer anyone who is thinking about starting a new business is to simply take the plunge. The biggest obstacle is largely psychological — to overcome the profound fear of abandoning a successful and stable career and pivot into the great unknown,” Brendon says.

The couple admits that starting a new business can be scary, but it can also be fun. With plans to expand to stores in downtown Nashville, Clarksville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville soon, they will continue to live the dolce vita.  PuffyCottonCandy.com

“Brendon had always dreamed about owing his own business but it was never the right idea, the right time, or the right financials.”

Celebrating Creative Spirit And Community

Paying
To The Legacy Of Made South

Combining the sun-dappled charm of the South with a true home for makers alike, Made South came to fruition as a means to celebrate the artistry of the Southern spirit. The market is where artisans and makers bring their creations to life.

Founder Chris Thomas’ entrepreneurial courage was sparked to create a community for artists of all trades after more than a decade of partnering with none other than financial guru Dave Ramsey. Uncharted dreams met raw determination when Thomas decided to depart from his full-time role to pursue something that could not only create memories for his family but could be passed down to them as well.  “I wanted to create an event where makers of all trades could come together in community to celebrate their talents," Thomas says. Over time, the event has become a symphony of community and creativity, with a shared love for the South right in the heart of Franklin.

Calling attention beyond the bright lights of Broadway, Made South elevates the voices of makers and artisans of the South – a treasure trove of talent waiting to be celebrated. What began as a humble venture soon blossomed into a movement surpassing even the Thomas family’s loftiest prayers. The evolution of the Made South brand is a direct reflection of the strength of the vibrant communities around it, resulting in forging a commitment to creating memorable experiences for makers and buyers alike.

Made South began as what was expected to be a small market for local artists to hang their hats to gain awareness for their brands. It grew into a fan-crazed event, demanding more space than what was originally acquired for it. When the opportunity arose for Thomas to move the holiday market to the Factory in Franklin, it was a serendipitous moment of what was truly meant to be. Up and coming, the Factory was a place that blended the rustic allure of concrete and brick. In a

space where the air itself seems to carry the aroma of creativity, its aged walls seemed to blend effortlessly with the essence of Made South's magic.

As Made South's story unfolded, so did its trajectory. The transformation was a graceful dance, shifting from subscription boxes to a universe of events and experiences that bloomed like magnolias in the Mississippi Delta. The event’s story is not merely about material possessions, but about the narratives woven into those possessions, the skilled hands that crafted them, and the people who have poured their hearts and passion into every stitch and stroke.

Thomas began to realize that it was time to move on from Made South, but after receiving feedback on how much it would be missed, he decided to look for someone to hand off the reins to.

While Thomas and his wife remain the steadfast guardians of the Made South brand, a new chapter unfurls as fellow Made South maker Chris Richardson from Birmingham, Alabama, and his wife step into the spotlight, taking the reins of the Holiday Market event. “The thing that drew me to Made South was the fact that as a maker myself, I felt celebrated each time I participated in the event,” says Richardson.

A true match made in business heaven has created a seamless transition for Made South, beginning a new era that allows both Thomas and Richardson to showcase their shared passions and strengths.

If you are a lover of the South, a patron of small businesses, and an adventurer seeking the heart of authentic creativity, then follow your path to the Made South Holiday Market on November 17-18 at The Factory in Franklin.

Blending the sun-kissed allure of the Southern landscape with a vibrant haven for artisans, Made South is a beacon, reminding us that the Southern soul thrives in the artistry of its people. MadeSouth.com

Eat Your Way Through Franklin (And Beyond)

Five Food Tours To Try This Fall

Franklin’s food scene has long been a draw, from its humble beginnings of mom and pops and meat and threes to its current status as a destination for culinary excellence. As the town has grown in both size and popularity, so too have its culinary offerings – which still include plenty of the tried and true favorites, but now also incorporate global cuisine and notable chefs that call Franklin home.

Whether you’re ready for an immersive look at Franklin’s own food and drink scene or you’d rather opt for a culinary adventure a few miles north, these food tours in Franklin and Nashville have you covered.

FRANKLIN WALKING TOURS

While Franklin Walking Tours specializes in tours centered around history and hauntings, they do offer a “boozy bar crawl” option for private groups. The experience is customizable based on length and group size. FranklinWalkingTours.com/#tours

FRANKLIN ON FOOT

One of Downtown Franklin’s resident tour groups, Franklin on Foot, occasionally offers a “Taste of Franklin” tour that stops not only at some of the strip’s most beloved restaurants but at local food stores as well. Plus they dish up plenty of history along the way. Check FranklinOnFoot.com/food-tours for availability.

JOYRIDE BREWERIES AND DISTILLERIES

You can’t drive through Nashville without seeing at least 50 party buses, but Joyride Nashville ups the ante on the mobile party barges by offering a brewery and distillery tour by golf cart. The cart routes through the city, stopping at a number of local brands that craft their own brews and spirits. Joyrideus.com/ nashville-tn

ULTIMATE COFFEE + COCKTAILS TOUR

If you’re wanting to take matters into your own hands, opt for a tour of my personal favorite coffee and cocktail spots along Main Street. Start your day at the adorable Coffee House at Second and Bridge, stop for a pastry at McGavock’s Coffee Bar, then settle in for a glass of wine (from a dispenser, which is extra fun) at JJ’s Wine Bar when the clock strikes five. For some of the best cocktails in town, stop by O’ Be Joyful, Gray’s on Main, or (and) the brand-new Stable Reserve.

Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee Gives Back to Community

When it comes to world-class orthopaedic care, Bone and Joint of Tennessee is a familiar name throughout the region. But that isn’t the only thing the physicians and providers of Bone and Joint Institute are known for. They’re also well-recognized for their deep commitment to the community.

“From having a presence on the sidelines of Williamson County football games in the fall, to providing college scholarships to supporting organizations near and dear to the Bone and Joint family, giving back is part of our DNA,” said Casey Davidson, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon and physician chair of the Bone and Joint Fund of the Williamson Health Foundation.

Established in 2018, Bone and Joint Institute is part of the Williamson Health family and is led by nationally recognized physicians with expertise in orthopaedic surgery, arthroscopic surgery, joint replacement, sports medicine and spinal surgery. In addition to its state-of-the-art

facility on the Williamson Medical Center campus, Bone and Joint Institute also operates orthopaedic urgent care and physical therapy clinics in Brentwood, Nolensville, Thompson’s Station and West Franklin. Being involved and giving back to these communities is so important to the physicians and staff at Bone and Joint Institute.

On October 28, Bone and Joint Institute will be hosting its second annual Skeleton Gala in Liberty Hall at The Factory in Franklin. Featuring dinner, drinks, a silent auction and dancing to the dynamic band Burning Las Vegas, the black-tie Skeleton Gala has quickly emerged as Bone and Joint Institute’s primary fundraiser. Funds raised from the event benefit the Bone and Joint Fund of the Williamson Health Foundation.

“We don’t just provide services to the community; we are part of the community,” said Davidson. “Our team loves being able to help great organizations that serve the

area, support local students and also honor our late founder Dr. Craig Ferrell.”

One of the primary beneficiaries of the Skeleton Gala is the Craig Ferrell Memorial Scholarship fund. Named in honor of Dr. Ferrell, these scholarships are given to Williamson County high school students who are pursuing a college degree in health sciences. Other organizations who have benefited from the Bone and Joint Fund include Friends of Franklin Parks, Brightstone, Forrest Spence Fund, Deer Run Camps & Retreats and A Vintage Affair.

“The response to our inaugural event last year was tremendous, and we are looking forward to a bigger and better event this year to be able to continue to support the communities where we live and work,” said Davidson.

Tickets for the 2023 event are still available at $275 per person. More information can be found at BoneAndJointTN.org/ skeleton-gala

Meet the Duo Behind Nashville’s Largest Food Account

Marisa Goldstein and Ari Richman were freshmen at Vanderbilt University in 2014. Growing up in two known foodie towns (New York and Chicago, respectively), the pair bonded over their mutual love for food, and soon became ingrained in Nashville’s food scene which was just on the cusp of a boom.

“We were at Fido for dinner in Hillsboro Village and we were like, ‘We should start a food Instagram,” Ari shares. “We didn’t know where else to find food suggestions, and we decided we wanted to be able to provide that for others.”

That account was @Nashville_Eats on Instagram, and what may have started as two friends with an idea in a cafe has grown to a massive following surpassing 174,000.

As Nashville and the surrounding area has continued to experience an influx of both tourists and transplants, the hospitality scene has risen to the occasion to meet the demand. The city has welcomed renowned chefs with impressive accolades, opened innovative restaurants that have quickly racked up national awards, and maintained an excellent collection of locally-owned mom and pops.

“I credit us with starting our account at the right time,” Ari adds. “As Nashville has continued to grow, we’ve been able to be that source for people looking for suggestions for food, bars, hotels and activities.”

While the city of Nashville may be their primary focus, the pair have found their favorites in Franklin as well. Among them is Culaccino, an Italian eatery in the Franklin Square development. Chef Frank Pullara has created a space for gathering among friends or celebrating a special occasion over fine wines and craft cocktails, house-made pastas and wood-fired mains.

Franklin offers a plethora of excellent dining options across the city, but Ari and Marisa have you covered if you’re

interested in venturing into Nashville for a meal. Ari’s favorite restaurant (and mine, coincidentally) is Noko, an East Nashville newcomer serving up wood-fired Japanese fare. Reservations can be tough to come by, so it’s best to book early. For seafood lovers, Marisa’s favorite spot is Henrietta Red in Germantown, which offers a robust raw menu with oysters and crudo and seafood-forward mains.

If you’re looking for a spot to grab a drink instead of a meal, Ari recommends Rosemary and Beauty Queen, a vibrant spot in East Nashville that offers fun touches like cabana rentals, swings, and DJs at night. Marisa’s favorite is an elegant alternative – The Patterson House, a swanky haunt off Division Street that serves innovative (and photo worthy) cocktails and small bites.

“I think what’s unique about us is that we love showcasing places that are hidden gems,” Ari adds. “It’s not just photogenic food, we like showing off the places our followers might not necessarily know about from looking at Top 10 lists. We share food we enjoy, and where we have the best experiences.”

You won’t only find food on the @Nashville_Eats page, however, as the duo also shares information on Nashville’s hotels and experiences, and occasionally spotlights things to do in other cities. As you explore Nashville and Franklin’s food scenes on your own, be sure to tag the account for a chance to be featured, and use #NashvilleEats.

“Sometimes we learn about things from people who tag us,” Ari shares. “We love our followers’ suggestions and we repost others a lot.”

Ari and Marisa keep Q&As with details on all their favorite spots in their highlights, and regularly respond to direct messages and comments to engage with their community of followers. NASHVILLE
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DELIA JO RAMSEY

It was a random sunny July Sunday, when it felt too hot to sit poolside, but somehow, just right to eat piping hot pizza. (Trust me. I’m as confused as you are.)

“Let’s go on a pizza crawl,” I told my boyfriend, as we rarely ever have a simultaneous day off.

I’ve been writing about food for 15 years, and feel so lucky that it’s my daily grind but also still my passion. It’s not abnormal for me to take a “day off” and randomly decide to go on a food trek. Sometimes it’s to try a bunch of new restaurants, sometimes it’s to fulfill a specific craving, but rarely do I want to eat the same thing over and over.

But that wasn’t the case when I was a child.

My mom and Fred could never believe all the things I eat today, as they’d say I was the world’s pickiest eater, growing up. I refused to eat school lunches, sandwiches, or anything really. Each day for elementary and middle school, I packed pepperoni slices, cheese, and crackers, and that was my lunch for years on end — so you can see it’s a nostalgic food for me.  Since losing two parents in the past four years, it’s become a comfort food of sorts. There’s just something about saucy circular pie topped with spicy sausage and perfect pepperoni cups, and of course, lots of cheese (I’m the self-proclaimed “queen of queso, after all). On days when grief and anxiety and loneliness took my appetite, pizza still sounded good.

So that’s why, I think, pizza became my mission. It was healing — something I could control. Counting pizzas.

First, we hopped on and made a reservation for St. Vito — one of the toughest reservations in town to snag right now, then started plotting stops based on what was open on a Sunday afternoon. After hitting 10 stops in one day, I figured "Why stop here?"  CONTINUED >

109 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/FRANKLIN OCTOBER 2023

With my birthday (I’m a Leo) coming up in a few weeks, I had the idea to hit up 41 pizza places before my 41st birthday. After nine in one day, I figured it would be a simple mission. And people following me on my social media @diningwithdeliajo seemed to be into this project, all messaging me with suggestions for what to try next, while also asking me to rank the pizzas - a surprise I didn’t expect.

It started with 41 slices of pizza over 21 days, and along the way, the City of Chicago discovered my account and invited me to experience their city for the first time to cover, get this — Pizza City Fest. Talk about a dream assignment! Oh, but wait — I just ate so much pizza.

If you’re wondering, yep. I completed my mission. Then I took a two week pizza break (It got old - I wanted no red sauce for that interim) and headed off to Chicago where I consumed 26 more slices in 24 hours. Phew! It was like a pageant of pizzas of all kinds, and I was FULL.

If you’re counting slices, that’s 67 different slices of pizza (just one bite of many, that’s how we do it) over a matter of 39 days.

Would I do it again? Hmmmm, I’m not sure. I’ve prided myself in changing it up for every meal, so committing to one dish for even just a few weeks time bored my palate a bit. But as long as I have help to eat these foods, or I get to travel again? I’d definitely consider it.

What do I think makes a good pizza, after consuming all of these types, back to back? My short answer: I lean towards a fast-fired Neapolitan-style pie. The flour and ingredients for me feel far less filling — thus allowing me to eat more pizza. But I do think after careful consideration, it’s my preferred style of pizza. Detroit-style crispy squares and Chicago Deep Dish are great and certainly have their own lane, but they are so, so filling. So for a pizza crawl, I’d stick on the lighter style of slices. Tavernstyle works great for that too!

But even today, just a week later, I’ve already ordered more pizza. It really has helped my healing journey, and the journey helped me connect with so many people — so was it really ever about the pizza? Or is it about the journey itself and those I got to share this special, cheesy slice of my life with?

The Past, Present And Future Of The Heritage Ball

The Heritage Foundation of Williamson County is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Heritage Ball to be held at the Eastern Flank Battlefield Park on Saturday, October 7. There are incredible stories to tell and no one better than Danny Anderson who attended 49 of the 50 balls, along with the “Next Gen” Mary Michel Cross who is co-chairing the Next Gen Late Party with her husband, Will, for the younger generation. This year, Danny and his wife Teresa are honorary co-chairs of the ball along with Mary Ligon.

Heritage Foundation long-time supporter Danny Anderson and his wife Teresa have collectively chaired the Heritage Ball five times individually or as a couple and they have some stories to tell! Danny recalls in the early years, they could call it “ball month” (now called “ball week”) when supporters would come out to an open field now called the Eastern Flank and get the grounds ready for several hundred guests. Today, the Eastern Flank plays host to around 800 guests under the

same stars from 50 years ago.

Danny says, “We didn’t have a budget and ticket sales were our only income. We had a group of ladies that would put together floral arrangements and we would beg, borrow and steal to secure beautiful flowers and decorations. We did whatever it took. The guys would build the stage that consisted of 57 4 X 8 wooden panels bolted down on concrete. Elephants could have danced on that stage!”

Danny adds, “Each ball has been nostalgic in its own way. One year, I co-chaired the Chinese Ball with Cecil Ewin which was a buffet of all things. That was the last buffet in the history of the ball. Someone came up to me that night and said, ‘Danny, we have a problem. We are out of food and a lot of guests haven’t eaten.’ I went to each table and apologized. That didn’t go over well. The next day, I had Chinese food delivered to the guests who complained the most. That didn’t go over well either. Not all years were easy,” he says with a laugh.

Danny reminisced that one year at the Flamingo Ball there was so much rain prior to the event that the tent roof filled up with water and almost sank to the dance floor. “We had committee members and neighbors coming to help mop, put down hay and help make it presentable. That’s what’s so special about the ball. It’s not just for those who attend the event, but for the whole community. Back in the day, putting up a large tent in the city was a big deal and neighbors came from all around to see what was going on. They offered to help. We got to share with them what the Heritage Foundation is all about and they got it.”

He adds, “To this day, while we have a lot of helpers, we still invite the community to come to the site the week the tent is being erected and decorated to share the experience with our neighbors. The Heritage Foundation is for all of us as we work to protect our own heritage, preserve places and keep the charm that we know as Williamson County.”

The Future

Mary Michael and Will Cross are serving as the Next Gen Late Party Co-Chairs for the Heritage Ball. The “next generation” of supporters will enjoy cocktails and desserts before joining in on dancing until midnight.

Mary Michael says, “Will and I are so honored to be able to introduce the next generation to the true ‘heritage’ of the Heritage Ball. Will’s grandmother, Caroline Cross chaired the third ball, which was the first time it was in the field."

Will adds, “My grandmother Caroline, my father (Jim Cross) and my Aunt Amy cleaned up the field for two weeks to get ready for the ball. We’re excited to carry on the legacy my grandmother helped start to support this community and organization. We want to keep it as amazing now as it was then.”

Will, a lifelong Williamson County native, always wanted to return after college because it was and is important to him that Franklin hold onto all the things that make it special, unique, inviting and positive. They believe in the importance of the younger generation to appreciate and protect the mission and efforts of preserving and restoring historic structures in Williamson County.

Mary Michael adds, “The Late Party is a much more attainable price for our age group and provides an opportunity to involve the next generation, bring excitement around the mission and values of the Heritage Foundation, as well as educate and involve young leaders. It’s also just a fun night to network and surround yourself with movers and shakers in Williamson County.”

The Late Party begins at 8:00 p.m. and features an open bar, desserts by Cater615 and entertainment with dancing until midnight and is hosted by the Next Gen Advisory Board, the future faces of preservation.

Will graduated from Battle Ground Academy before attending Samford University where he graduated with a B.S. degree in finance. He works for Oversite, a family-owned owner’s representative and development consulting company in Franklin.

Mary Michael is originally from Fairhope, Alabama and moved to Franklin when she and Will married in June of 2019. Mary Michael taught Kindergarten at Battle Ground Academy before transitioning to her current role as Director of Marketing and Business Development for Oversite.

From the past, to the present and looking toward the future, the Heritage Ball continues to be relevant in Williamson County, preserving not only our places, but our stories and our heritage. WilliamsonHeritage.org

A Delicious Mission

Celebrate National Cinnamon Roll Day on October 4th

I embarked happily on my mission searching for the perfect combination of cinnamon, sugar, and buttery goodness. Yet I quickly discovered choosing the best cinnamon roll is as impossible as choosing my favorite child. Just as my children possess unique qualities and endearing traits that make them beloved in their own right, each cinnamon roll I tasted offered its own distinct appeal, making it impossible to single out a definitive favorite.

What constitutes cinnamon roll perfection (in my humble opinion)?

1. Fluffy and Tender Dough:  The foundation of a delicious cinnamon roll lies in its dough. The outer layer should boast a delicate, golden-brown crust that adds a satisfying crunch while the inside remains pillowy soft.

2. Cinnamon-Sugar Swirl: The signature swirl is the heart and soul of a cinnamon roll. It should be spread generously throughout the layers of dough, boasting a perfect balance of cinnamon’s warm spiciness and sugar’s sweetness.

3. Decadent Frosting: The crowning glory of a cinnamon roll is its luscious frosting. Whether it be cream cheese based, vanilla glazed, or a creative twist, the frosting should be velvety, smooth, and rich.

Franklin’s Finest:

1. Triple Crown Bakery: Ooey-gooey, hand-rolled, caramel-drizzled brioche dough cinnamon rolls made from scratch daily using a recipe based on award-winning Pastry Chef, Alena Vaughn’s Swedish heritage.

2. The Davis General: Delicious rolls loaded with cinnamon, topped with homemade icing and a pat of butter - because, you know, everything is better with butter.

Brentwood & Nolensville Picks:

3. Papa C Pies: Stop in or drive through to pick up Papa C Pies delectable grab-and-go non-GMO flour cinnamon rolls that are rolled by hand and inspired by a family tradition.

4. Nolensville Feed Mill Amish Market: Delicious Amishbaked deep dish pan cinnamon rolls are sold both fresh and frozen so you can enjoy some now and savor some later.

Spring Hill & Columbia Top Choices:

5. Grecian Family Restaurant and Bakery: Based on a secret family recipe handed down to owners Sasa and Frank Georgalos, these baked-fresh-daily cinnamon rolls are worth the trip!

6. Marcy Jo’s Mealhouse and Bakery: Baking over 60 pans of their famous cinnamon rolls each week, Marcy credits the addition of vanilla pudding as the secret to her heavenly cinnamon rolls.

In the end, I failed my mission. Perhaps it is not about picking a favorite or the best, but rather reveling in the impossible task of choosing a favorite. I hope you enjoy National Cinnamon Roll Day! Excuse me while I research on which date National Steak Day is celebrated.

Happy Together, Happy Forever

PLAYING AND PERFORMING THROUGH LIFE’S CHALLENGES

Despite much adversity, Mark Volman has had a very happy life. A founding member of the 1960s band The Turtles, he and his high school friends signed with a record label at 18-years-old and it changed their lives. “It was a whole new world for us, and a chance for us to get out of Westchester, California, travel and play our music,” he says.

Since then, his life has been filled with adventure. He’s played with other great musical icons like John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Bono and Frank Zappa. One of the band’s most iconic songs, and the one most people can’t help singing along with, is "Happy Together."

For the past nine years, Mark and a group of other renowned singers and bands from the 1960s, including Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Chuck Negron (formerly of Three Dog Night), The Association, Mark Lindsay (former lead singer of Paul Revere & The Raiders) and The Cowsills, have been touring together. The Happy Together 2023 tour kicked off in May in Florida, and when it’s finished, the musicians will have played 40 shows, including one at the Ryman Auditorium last August.

“These are all groups I grew up with and I just love all of their songs and their music,” says Mark. “The tour is just really fun, and at the end of the night, we do a finale. It's a memorable time for each of us, a spiritual thing. These are the people I will be with until the end of my life.”

To keep things fresh, the tour changes somewhat every year. “Bringing Little Anthony onto our tour this year has really given us a whole new kind of life,” he says. “He's not only a genuinely sweet man, but he participates in some of the goofiest things on the road.”

The tour draws many original fans, but the audience is comprised of people of all ages. “We see so many 16 to 21-year-olds who want to play and hear the

music of The Turtles, the Beatles, Grand Funk Railroad and all the artists that are in our show,” says Mark. “Our songs cover the generational scope. We’re like a museum on tour. There’s a lot of love that takes place and it’s what Woodstock tried to do in terms of bringing relationships together.” There are now plans in the works for a Happy Together album.

While being on tour is never easy, Mark was faced with some extra challenges. In 2015, he was diagnosed with throat cancer and had to go through grueling treatments in order to beat it. Then in 2020, he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, a condition that can lead to problems with thinking, movement, behavior, and mood.

“It's harder than I thought, but I have the greatest people around me,” he says. “Members of my band trail around to make sure I'm okay. I can’t thank them enough or my family. My kids call me every night when I’m on the road to make sure I'm OK. There's a lot going on in my brain, but I have a fun life. I'm really blessed and I can't let it get to me. I just have to keep working through it. We're already talking about next year's tour.” Many people also remember Mark as Flo (short for Phlorescent Leech). With lifelong comic foil Howard Kaylan, Mark was Flo to his Eddie and the duo has been compared to a rock-era Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Along with his musical success, Mark is also very accomplished in the world of academia. At the age of 44, he began his pursuit of degrees that would allow him to become an assistant professor and chair of the Entertainment Industry Studies program in the Mike Curb School for Entertainment and Music Business at Belmont University.

“Professors brought me in to talk about The Turtles and I was already doing other things at universities to fill my

life with teaching others how to utilize their musical talent," he says. "It’s not going to go anywhere if they don’t make it happen, and they need to step into the business of being an artist. Learning all of those elements was a challenge for me.”

He adds, “I wanted to be able to help young singers, songwriters, publishers, and those in management with all of the things I was swamped with as an artist. After six years, I finally graduated with a bachelor's and master’s, doing everything that the school demanded I go through in order to teach. I even sang in the choir.”

For 12 years, he greatly enjoyed teaching and misses it. “But I can't do everything,” says Volman. “Now I want to do more creatively. I want to write and I have some ideas for film and television.”

Speaking of writing, Mark’s book, Happy Forever: My Musical Adventures With The Turtles, Frank Zappa, T. Rex, Flo & Eddie, and More , was published in June. Although it’s labeled as an autobiography, his life is mostly told through memories, anecdotes and reflections of over 100 of his friends, peers and family members. This impressive list includes members of the Doors, the E Street Band, The Monkees, and other major players in the world of radio, animation and academia. Underneath some of these reflections are responses, often humorous, by Volman. The book also includes never-before-seen photos, and forewords by Alice Cooper and Chris Hillman.

“I was so surprised that so many people wanted to be involved in the book, and there were times I almost didn't recognize the character they were writing about," says Volman. "He sounded like a really nice guy and I wanted to meet him. I felt like Sally Field at times, ‘They liked me! They really liked me!’ It was an interesting way to conceptualize the different ways that artists look at each other."

"Honestly, it took me 13 years to be able to put the final note on this book. At the end of each year, we came to a point where John Cody [who compiled the book with Mark] and I were going to review what we've created that year, but we weren't sure how to stop or when it was going to stop, so every year we just kept adding to it.”

This book has inspired him to work on another one. “It was just a magnificent experience for me and now I’m working to put together a book called Tales From the Road , which is stories about being on tour. "I’m finding a new way to create and I’m happy to see it unfold. I’ve got all these big plans. I've written some movies and there are kids’ shows I'd like to be a part of. I’m just going to take it one day at a time and see what God's plan is for me.”

When not creating, on tour, or writing books, Mark’s happy to hang out at his home in Franklin. “I really love the area. I love the city,” he says. “I love the people who are coming here. Happy together and happy forever is how it should be.”

TAKING ‘THREE’ FOR THE TEAM

With A Wide Variety Of Individual Interests, The Tower Circle Partners Team Is Winning Big For Its Clients

BY

Whether it’s performing a powerful song, running a competitive race, or preparing a memorable meal, predicting the outcome is not as simple as analyzing the notes, strides or ingredients that make it that way. Things need to occur in a certain way.

A similar case can be made about the individuals who make up the wealth management team at Tower Circle Partners (TCP) of Janney Montgomery Scott.

At first glance, the team members – Executive

Steven Glasgow, Vice

FINANCIAL BUZZ | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES
132

Executive Danielle Garofolo - don’t appear to have a lot in common. But while they may be driven by different interests, they share common values and a genuine appreciation for the varied interests of their client base.

“There are still a lot of people in the wealth management field who work as individuals,” says Glasgow. “And while technical knowledge is important, when you’re dealing with people and their money, that only goes so far. The team concept, with personalities working together who understand what it’s like to have different ambitions, goes a long way. A team can be more empathetic to a client’s personal goals.”

One of the ways TCP addresses important personal objectives is by taking a holistic approach to wealth management. Technical elements, such as tax minimization strategies, cash-flow management, retirement income, insurance planning and business succession plans are executed according to the client’s needs. Then the client’s personal values are taken into account when considering aspects such as legacy wishes, charitable giving and life goals.

“We work closely with our client’s estate attorneys, CPAs and other advisors to help ensure that all facets of the client’s financial plan are being implemented properly,” says Glasgow. “These additional layers set us apart from most of our peers.”

The team that would eventually become Tower Circle Partners formed in 2005 when Glasgow and Sibler worked together managing institutional investment assets and focusing on corporate retirement plans. They have worked together ever since, with stops at two other firms before landing at Janney in 2018. Today they manage over $3.2 billion in assets. According to Glasgow, the TCP team’s success begins with the mutual respect and camaraderie that comes from a decade of working together.

“This is a stressful job so, if we’re not having a good time, it shows,” he says. “That means being in the

right frame of mind and knowing when it’s OK to be lighthearted. Clients need to see you as a source of strength. If you’re unhappy, they’ll know it.”

Their diverse interests away from the office keep the team fresh, energized, and motivated. Glasgow is a musician at heart. Sibler is a competitive athlete and Garofolo is a veritable student of the finer points of fine cuisine.

Glasgow has played guitar for most of his life. Though not a Nashville native, he’s lived here for nearly 30 years and is perhaps one of the few guitarists in town not striving to be the next big thing. “I gave up hopes of being a professional musician when I was in college and realized the route to success is narrow,” he says. “I do it to blow off steam. I’m 56 in dog years but still 18 in my mind.” He’s amassed a nice collection of guitars along the way. Among his favorites are a Gibson Les Paul, a Kramer and a Jackson. He can play Van Halen’s “Eruption,” much to the chagrin of his wife and two grown children. He also enjoys martial arts and claims to play golf “really badly.”

Sibler swam competitively in high school but gave up the sport upon being admitted to Vanderbilt, which did not have a team. The Baltimore native has resided in the Nashville area ever since. “My transition from swimming to running is a function of having three young children,” he says. “Finding time to get out of the house is tough enough, but going to the pool is harder.”

These days he runs around Brentwood where he and his wife raise three children, ages 3-11. He also runs the occasional marathon. In January he is taking the family to Walt Disney World for the Dopey Challenge, a four-day event that includes a daily race with distances ranging from a 5K to a full marathon. “I finish marathons, but not very quickly, and I pay to do it,” he quips. “But the family will be there and one of my daughters wants to run the 5K. So it’s a fun experience for all of us.”

“We work closely with our client’s estate attorneys, CPAs and other advisors to help ensure that all facets of the client’s financial plan are being implemented properly.”

Garofolo joined her colleagues in 2013 following her move to Nashville from New York City. A former Wall Street stockbroker and M&A associate, she knew she was a natural fit for the team when Glasgow began the interview by asking, “What do you think about my socks?” As a native New Yorker of Italian descent, it’s also natural that she is immersed in the intricate details that go into the art of preparing an exceptional meal. “I grew up in a family where everyone knew how to cook, so authenticity is important to me,” she says. “You know when a meal is prepared faithfully and with the right ingredients. When that happens, the experience becomes memorable.” Along those lines, she’s impressed by what she has discovered in many Nashville restaurants. “NYC will always be a mecca when it comes to elevated fine dining but Nashville’s dining scene has blown up in the 10 years I’ve been here,” she says. With so many dining options, it’s easy for a veteran foodie to be overwhelmed. But Garofolo has some advice for those who are just embarking on their Nashville food journey. “Try following food and restaurant accounts on Instagram to keep up with what’s new,” she says. “Try as many as you can but focus on the cuisine you like the most and try those restaurants first.”

ASK THE EXPERT

Amy Hatcher APRN has been an injector for 16 years and is one of the leading trainers for Botox across the country She owns 2 AWSkinCo practices right here in Franklin and specializes in anti-aging and full face rejuvenation

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND FILLER?

Botox and fillers are both popular treatments that help reduce the signs of aging but they work in different ways and are used to treat different areas of the face

Botox is a muscle relaxant that is used to treat wrinkles and fine lines in the face It works by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles, which causes the muscles to relax This can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines particularly in areas such as the forehead crow ’ s feet and frown lines between the eyebrows Botox is a temporary treatment that typically lasts for around 3 months

Fillers, on the other hand, are used to add volume to areas that have lost fullness due to aging They are typically made from hyaluronic acid which is a substance that occurs naturally in the body Fillers can be used to add volume to areas such as the cheeks lips and under-eye area They can also be used to fill in wrinkles and fine lines, particularly around the mouth and nose Fillers are great for lifting the face as it begins to descend with aging Fillers will last up to 2 years

What's not to love about a rooftop restaurant in Nashville's Gulch? The indoor/outdoor space features 270-degree panoramic views of downtown.

The menu

Choose from seven menu items like the savory avocado toast, loaded tater tots, or the W breakfast burger. Love bacon? Order a quarter pound of it and dip it in chocolate sauce.

The cocktails

3 4

A bespoke menu of craft cocktails includes popular song title selections like the Lavender Haze (vodka, blueberry, lavender, lemon) or Check Yes or No (blanco tequila, combier, jalapeno, lime). Drinks are served individually or sharable. Try the bottomless Always Flowing Mimosa special for $30.

The vibe

The laid back restaurant/bar offers eye-catching art like Reverie, a morphing-light sculpture by Nashville-based Cour Design and iconic photographs from Jim Marshall, known as the "godfather of rock 'n roll photography."

The hotel

W Nashville has more than one space for the public to hang out. Comfortable, upholstered couches, brightly patterned pillows and rugs, and modern art adorn the lobby. Head down there after your brunch at Proof and enjoy some people watching at this fun and trendy space.
