WOMEN AT THE HEART OF THE CITY

This One Goes Out to The Ladies.

Hi everyone!

My name is Sydney, and I’ve had the privilege of being a contributing writer since we launched in January 2024. But last month marked a new chapter: my first month on this team as the  Publication Director.  I cannot begin to express how honored and excited I am to step into this role. If we haven’t had the chance to meet yet, I hope we do soon!

One of my greatest joys has always been storytelling. I’ve been journaling since I was seven, getting lost in books for as long as I can remember, and writing about the world in any way I could. My passion for print media led me to write a thesis on its impact and publish a guidebook for young women attending the University of Arkansas. If my younger self could see me now stepping into this role, she would be in awe.

We’re more than a publication—we’re a heartbeat of the community, connecting and inspiring through storytelling. Our mission is to empower people to use their God-given gifts, and that fires me up. Watching this publication grow into a Fayetteville staple has been incredible, but the best is yet to come.

We are building something special here—something that belongs to all of us. Let’s continue to celebrate the voices of our city together.

With gratitude and excitement,

May 2025

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

With over 5 million cases diagnosed annually in the United States, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the country and Premier is here to help you stay protected.

Why we choose Mineral Sunscreens over Chemical Sunscreens:

Broad-spectrum protection:

Mineral sunscreens, containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays. This helps prevent sunburns, premature aging, and skin cancer.

Immediate effectiveness:

Unlike chemical sunscreens, which need about 20-30 minutes to become effective, mineral sunscreens start working as soon as they are applied

Gentle on skin:

Mineral sunscreens are less likely to cause irritation, making them suitable. They sit on the skin’s surface and reflect UV rays rather than absorbing them.

Eco-friendly:

Mineral sunscreens are often considered more environmentally friendly because they don’t contain harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which can damage coral reefs.

Compatibility with other products: They can be used over makeup and other skincare products without affecting their efficacy. You can reduce your risk of skin cancer by limiting or avoiding exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Checking your skin for suspicious changes can help detect skin cancer at its earliest stages. Early detection of skin cancer gives you the greatest chance for successful skin cancer treatment.

FIE RY FEMALESOFFAYETTEVILLE

In our Ladies Issue, it’s only fitting to spotlight four dynamic women—Ro Bailey, Denise Garner, Christy Slay, and Amy Reeves Robinson—whose stories embody resilience, leadership, and impact. From public service to fashion, sustainability, and entrepreneurship, these women are forging bold paths and uplifting others across Northwest Arkansas and beyond.

HOW FOUR WOMEN ARE FORGING CHANGE WITH FIRE AND GRACE

Ro Bailey

Ro’s journey is one of resilience. A U.S. Army veteran, professional model, mentor, and owner of RetRO Clothing, she navigated a turbulent path marked by a divorce and her mother’s cancer diagnosis within just two months. Overwhelmed, she sought solace with a friend in Northwest Arkansas, whose words changed everything: “You can’t heal in the same place that made you sick.” With that in mind, she packed her 1998 Volkswagen Beetle, her three-yearold son, and a few belongings, leaving Tennessee for Arkansas to start anew. Their first home was a small apartment with just a futon, but Ro’s Army experience reminded her: “Everything is temporary.”

Determined to rebuild, Ro took a job at Dillard’s, but life had bigger plans. When Cumulus Radio reached out, she discovered her natural talent for using her voice. From there, she began exploring modeling, something she had once viewed as just a side hustle. It wasn’t until she connected with NWA Fashion Week through Interform that she truly found her purpose mentoring aspiring models. Now, she teaches others to set boundaries, drown out industry noise, and trust the process. Her mantra, “Rejection is protection,” reflects her journey as proof that resilience transforms adversity into strength and that life’s toughest detours often guide us to our true path.

Denise Garner

“I hope when I leave the legislature that people remember that I strived to pull everyone together,” says Denise, who never planned on entering politics but is now serving her fourth term in the Arkansas House. When she first moved to Arkansas 48 years ago, her husband was working on Governor Tucker’s campaign. She was focused on her nursing career but her passion for advocacy was soon ignited. Over the years, she worked with nonprofits and became a delegate for Hillary Clinton in 2016. It was during an Emerge boot camp that Denise found her true calling and decided to run for office. Armed with years of experience in healthcare and nonprofit work, she ran to educate and listen to her constituents. To everyone’s surprise (including her own) she won by fifteen points, leaving her supporters in stunned silence. Reflecting on her journey, Denise shares, “From elementary school, my parents worried I was more interested in getting to know people than anything else,” a curiosity that has since become her greatest strength. Her proudest achievement came in 2010 when she helped launch FEED Communities, working to tackle child hunger in Arkansas. Denise encourages women to fight imposter syndrome and step up to lead. “We need women from all walks of life--teachers, farmers, and beyond--leading our state.” Her hope is to leave behind a legacy of collaboration, connection, and meaningful change.

Christy Slay

Christy Slay is a trailblazer, a woman of tenacity, and as one coworker aptly put it, an “empathetic baddie,” balancing a kind heart with an unwavering drive to create change. With a PhD in biology, she began in field research but soon saw business as the key to real-world impact. Driven to bridge science and industry, Christy found her calling at The Sustainability Consortium, co-created by Arizona State University and the University of Arkansas. When she first approached the group, they weren’t sure what to do with a biologist, but over the past 16 years, she has led the organization in developing a global, transparent, scientifically-based system for measuring and reporting product sustainability.

Christy’s leadership is driven by the belief that anything is possible. Under her guidance, TSC has become a trusted resource for businesses, helping them navigate challenges and implement sustainable practices. Looking ahead, Christy’s professional goal is to make all products sustainable, a game-changing feat she believes is within reach. Personally, she hopes to leave a legacy of care and inspiration, ensuring those she works with feel supported and empowered. Christy encourages Fayetteville to contribute to sustainability by voting with their dollars and exploring resources like TSC’s Sustainable Snapshots.

Amy Reeves Robinson

Amy is a woman who looks beyond titles to truly understand who people are. She recalls a moment at a Magdalene House workshop when a woman called her brave, a sentiment she strives to embody in every facet of life. Her career journey has led her through banking, law, and a deep love for business. Amy co-founded Springline Group with her husband, to help startups, applying her Silicon Valley experience to go beyond funding and focus instead on uncovering a company’s core and driving meaningful change. This revelation led her to pivot toward helping women-owned businesses.

Amy’s vision expanded after a transformative trip to Pakistan for a national business competition, where she saw the power of women supporting women. Inspired, she delivered a TEDx Fayetteville talk, “I Believe in Tribes of Women,” which grew into Tribe of Women, LLC, fostering cultures of female support. In this spirit, she led programs for the shortlived, but impactful Company Club: a clubhouse for women. When COVID hit, Amy transitioned the spirit of that endeavor into NEXXT - A catalyst community for women. Through 2022, this was a virtual platform focused on fostering identity and strengthening women in aspects of their lives. Now, she is exploring new gathering spaces for women to connect and thrive. Amy embodies bravery, reminding us that courage and fear can coexist, urging us to “Do it scared.” From motherhood to global ventures, her impact extends throughout NWA and beyond.

MEET MAYOR Molly Rawn

LEADING FAYETTEVILLE INTO A BOLD NEW CHAPTER
ARTICLE BY WILL NEWTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEREDITH MASHBURN
Mayor Molly Rawn

Those who are lucky enough to call themselves friends to Molly Rawn know that she is a hard person to dislike. She enjoys spending her limited free time reading books or watching movies. She is immensely proud of the family that she has built with her husband, Jeremy. Her unique sense of humor can make anyone laugh. Yet, at Rawn’s core, is a desire to advocate for change. When she saw a chance to lead her beloved city of Fayetteville into a new era, she took a risk – and it paid off. In January, Rawn was sworn in as Fayetteville’s first new mayor in 16 years.

“There’s something special about Fayetteville – its authenticity. It’s hard to put your finger on, but those who live here know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s home, and there’s no other place I’d rather live right now,” said Rawn.

Rawn’s adoration for Fayetteville is evident in her life and career. The Paragould, Arkansas native expected to live her life in Little Rock with her husband; however, the Rawns found themselves moving to Fayetteville in 2005 to attend the University of Arkansas and ended up falling in love with the city, choosing it as the forever home for their three children. This unexpected trajectory led her into her previous, beloved role as Chief Executive Officer of Experience Fayetteville, an organization dedicated to bringing economic development to the city through tourism experiences.

“My time at Experience Fayetteville allowed me to get to know our city from a great vantage point of what makes Fayetteville fantastic. I love to work in the community and on behalf of the community in which I live. It was a phenomenal experience,” said Rawn.  Rawn is incredibly proud of her work at Experience Fayetteville, where she had the chance to increase the economic activity of the city by completing projects such as the Art Court on Dickson Street. Rawn’s commitment to the city led her to decide to take things to the next level, announcing her mayoral campaign in 2023.

A mayoral campaign was uncharted territory for Rawn, but the hands-on support of her family helped lead her to victory. Rawn said that her husband and children helped in their own ways, whether it be by going door-to-door to spread her mission statements, stamping postcards, or even just keeping her company.

“I would not have begun this journey had I not had the support of my family. It was a decision weighty enough that it’s one we made together,” said Rawn.

Rawn’s election as mayor was historic for Fayetteville. Not only is she the first newly-elected mayor in 16 years, but she is the first woman to be elected mayor in a city-wide election. Rawn is also the first woman to hold the coveted position since 1987.

“I believe that our best years lie ahead of us, and I am excited to lead us there.”

— Molly Rawn

“It feels pretty darn fantastic! I didn’t run because I’m a woman, and yet I know that those things are important, and I’m honored. I feel like it is part of my job to make sure that I’m not the last woman in this office and that we don’t go another almost 40 years until the next one.”

“I thought that I could do a good job and believed that I could make an impact. There’s so much that Fayetteville is doing right, but there are some things I felt that we could do better, and I was in the position to make a difference,” said Rawn.

Rawn has only been in office for a few months, but she’s undeniably steadfast in her values of transparency, efficiency, and moving Fayetteville forward. Among her hopes for the future of Fayetteville is a commitment to working together with the city’s younger community to bring their ideas for the city to fruition and the addition of an aquatic center.

“I believe that our best years lie ahead of us, and I am excited to lead us there.”

All Things Skin

How Dr. Missy Clifton is Paving the Path for Dermatology in Arkansas and Beyond

Dr. Missy Clifton

Dr. Missy Clifton never planned on becoming a dermatologist. In fact, she once envisioned herself in gynecology or surgery until her last semester dermatology rotation changed everything. Drawn to the field’s perfect blend of science, artistry, and patient connection, she set out to create something bigger than a traditional practice. Today, as the founder of Premier Dermatology and a triple board-certified expert, Dr. Clifton is leading the charge in integrative skincare, cutting-edge treatments, and a patientfirst approach. From pioneering new anti-aging advancements to building a state-of-the-art practice where “All Things Skin” come together under one roof, she’s shaping the future of dermatology one patient and one innovation at a time.

An Arkansas native, Dr. Missy Clifton excelled from the start—graduating summa cum laude from UCA before earning the top spot in her medical class at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1995. She refined her expertise through an Internal Medicine internship and a Dermatology residency, finishing as Chief Resident. Now a nationally recognized leader in medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology, Dr. Clifton specializes in lasers, injectables, chemical peels, and dermal fillers. As a sought-after trainer for top aesthetic brands like Allergan and Revance, her influence extends beyond her practice, with research published in leading dermatology journals. Committed to staying at the forefront of innovation, she continually studies the latest advancements in skincare and aesthetics to ensure that every treatment is safe, effective, and tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

With this commitment to excellence, Dr. Clifton founded Premier Dermatology in 2004 with a clear vision: to blend the artistry of aesthetics with the science of modern medicine, helping patients enhance their natural beauty while prioritizing overall skin health. Premier Dermatology is more than just a practice—it’s a destination for personalized, cutting-edge care designed to empower patients to feel confident and radiant in their own skin. By combining medical expertise with an unwavering dedication to innovation and patient well-being, Dr. Clifton and her team continue to set the benchmark in the aesthetics industry, transforming not just appearances, but lives.

For Dr. Missy, patient care goes beyond just treatments; it’s about building meaningful, lasting relationships and treating each individual like family. She takes the time to truly listen to her

Premier Dermatology, Bentonville

With a demanding career, I wondered how Missy stays balanced. Her secret? A few simple but meaningful self-care rituals:

MISSY'S GO-TO SELF-CARE PRACTICES:

• Reformer Pilates – “It’s magic for me.”

• Reading – A dedicated book club member for years

• Spending time with family & friends

patients, understand their specific needs, and design personalized care plans that not only enhance their appearance but also support their overall skin health. At Premier Dermatology, the goal isn’t just to provide a quick fix but to take a holistic approach, ensuring that every patient receives a full skin analysis, preventive care, and expert guidance. “We want you to feel welcome the moment you walk in,” she says, emphasizing the warm, family-like atmosphere she has cultivated. By fostering trust and long-term connections, Dr. Clifton and her team continue to set the gold standard in dermatology and aesthetics.

Dr. Missy Clifton is always pushing the boundaries of skincare, and the latest innovations have her particularly energized. With Alice Walton’s School of Medicine opening in Northwest Arkansas, she’s excited to see how the medical landscape in the region evolves. At the forefront of skincare advancements, Dr. Clifton is exploring growth factors and stimulants that can reverse DNA damage and reduce skin pre-cancer by up to 70%—and yes, it’s as revolutionary as it sounds! As a sought-after trainer for top aesthetic brands, she’s constantly teaching about neuromodulators, fillers, and practice-building. But here’s the twist: she’s just as dedicated to learning as she is to teaching. Her approach is rooted in an abundance mindset, focused on achieving the best possible results for everyone in the industry. Of course, I had to ask for some skincare tips. Her number-one must-have: Sunscreen with zinc or titanium—it doesn’t matter what brand, just use it every day. And one skincare myth she wishes would disappear? Harsh, drying products don’t clear acne; they make it worse by causing the skin to produce even more oil. So go ahead, moisturize away! With cutting-edge treatments, a patient-first philosophy, and a passion for constant learning, Dr. Clifton is redefining what it means to care for your skin. And as if that weren’t enough, she’s working on launching her own line of DNA repair technology, pushing the boundaries of skincare even further. Premier Dermatology is not just a place for treatments, it’s a place where the future of skincare unfolds. Dr. Clifton is leading the charge, and there’s no telling where she’ll take us next, except that it will definitely be groundbreaking.

DIVE IN

Abel Sánchez leads UARK diving into a bold new era

Abel Sánchez

As a former diver and the father to two daughters who are divers, Abel Sánchez knows how important it is to approach coaching women’s diving with care. Sánchez, who has been the head diving coach at the University of Arkansas since 2021, is cultivating an atmosphere of camaraderie and safety for his divers through weekly team meetings and bonding get-togethers

“Women and men are very different, and, having two daughters of my own and having coached women’s programs in the past, it’s crucial to create an environment and cohesive team in order for the ladies to feel comfortable because diving can be a scary sport,” said Sánchez.

Abel Sánchez

Sánchez is very familiar with the difficulty level of competitive diving. He was a decorated diver for the University of Michigan in college and represented Peru in the 2000 Olympic Games at Syndey, Australia. His skills led him to a career as an award-winning competitive diving coach. Spanning 26 years, Sánchez has coached at the University of New Mexico, University of North Carolina and Dive Calgary in Canada. His stellar coaching abilities has advanced several of his team members to the NCAA championships. When Sánchez received the offer to become the head diving coach at the University of Arkansas, he saw an opportunity to recharge the program.

“This will be a new era of diving at the University of Arkansas. There have been some great divers in the past, so we are standing on the shoulders of great divers. Since I’ve joined the team, the program has changed night and day. The ladies want to dive, want to be better, want to learn new dives. I’m working with women who truly want to be here,” said Sánchez.

Sánchez has only been with the university’s diving team for four seasons, but he has already coached his first athlete to the NCAA championships: a freshman named Maria Sanchz who was named an All-American Honorable Mention after placing 16th in the country.

“This will be a new era of diving at the University of Arkansas. There have been some great divers in the past, so we are standing on the shoulders of great divers. Since I’ve joined the team, the program has changed night and day.”

When he isn’t focusing on leading his athletes to victory, Sánchez is working to introduce a love for diving in the next generation of children ages 6-18 at the Razorback Diving Academy, the only club team in Arkansas.

“Diving is not a popular sport, but I wish it were. I would love to blow it up and introduce as many kids as possible to diving. It’s a cool, intriguing, dynamic sport, and I think that it’s a lot harder than people think. I would encourage as many young ladies to try diving out,” said Sánchez.

DIY DAY

INSPIRATION FOR A MOTHER/ DAUGHTER DIY DAY

WITH MOM

An afternoon spent together is priceless with today’s busy schedules. Instead of going out, staying in can provide quaint, quiet one-on-one time for a mother and daughter (or multiple daughters). Finding time on calendars is the hard part, and filling that time is all fun from there. Here are a few favorite ideas for inspiration that may spark excitement for planning those special times together.

01 Interview Journaling

Storytelling makes for the best memories. Structure memory recall by filming or journaling interview-style question-andanswer sessions, cataloging information for future generations. Videos and notes with detailed family adventures are priceless, and we all always wish we had more of them.

02 Charm Necklaces 03

Custom DIY charm necklaces and bracelets are trending. Gather a theme idea: birthstones, family initials, travels or even favorite hobbies, and procure charms from your local craft store or online shop. Selecting charms for each other also could be a fun way to bring delight to the crafting occasion. Necklaces and bracelets can be made for each other, or as future gifts for upcoming occasions such as a family wedding, a birthday milestone or an anniversary.

Text conversations around kitchen tips or ingredient procurement seem endless. Spend some time together in the kitchen preparing favorite family recipes, sharing Mom’s best tips and tricks. Choosing freezer-friendly meals is a great way to walk away with meals for upcoming busy days. There’s nothing like Mom’s recipes!

Photo Archive Day

Printed photos are often stored in boxes or tubs with little organization. Perhaps you have photos of your own, or even a grandparent who has passed, that need an organization overhaul. While these projects can be daunting, ‘many hands make light work.’ Group the photos by decade and file them in order. Consider purchasing a photo scanner to digitize the files for future generations. Photo organization always brings storytelling, laughter and warm memories.
