Hey Fayetteville! I am one of City Lifestyle’s writers, Trevor Spencer. I’m originally from Jackson, Tennessee, where I grew up before moving to Fayetteville to attend the U of A. I remember the first time I visited the Hill from the lowlands of West Tennessee. My older brother, Hollen, took me straight up to one of the most incredible spots in Fayetteville: Mount Sequoyah. Beside the large glowing cross that faces downtown, I could see the square, the U of A campus, and the rolling Boston Mountains of the Ozarks behind them. Seeing all the culture and beauty of the city, I knew then I wanted to live here.
Even now, as a Master's student, I will often drive up Maple Street to sit and watch the city skyline from the top of this view. Usually, I’m there to relax or reflect on life, but this particular Sunday I sit up by the cross, I can’t help but be captured by this place and the ways this city has forged so much of the person I am today.
I can see Old Main, reminding me of all the friends and memories I made as a Razorback. I can see the place by the square where my brother and I attended church for so many years. I think about bringing my fiancé, Olivia, to see this view on our first date. I think about all the summer jobs I had in Fayetteville's local hotspots: as a fitness instructor at Clubhaus, cook at Herman’s Ribhouse, stringer at Summerhill Racquet Club. I think about all of my experiences as a journalism student going out into the community to learn more about the incredible local restaurants, the nonprofit service organizations, the concerts, and the unique small businesses that make Fayetteville a wonderful and impactful city to live in.
Each person, place, and moment I remember has shaped me, and they have grown my love for this city. Now, writing for City Lifestyle, I look forward to capturing more stories of those businesses and people who have been shaped by this city like I have.

NSA’s goal to restore patients to their natural state is memorialized by its slogan, “A Return to You™.” Their surgical and non-surgical solutions are meant to reestablish your unique features, not change your look.

EMCAR STONE STUDIO INC. IS PROVIDING BEAUTIFUL COUNTERTOPS FOR HOMES ACROSS NWA!
““We want to make sure that we are providing quality service. As we grow, we don’t want to lose the home- and small-business-feel.”
-Carlos Gallegos
EMCAR Stone Studio offers a variety of stunning countertop materials and services to homes in Northwest Arkansas.
Carlos G. Gallegos, the owner and operator, grew up in Hot Springs, but he says he takes pride in having chosen Fayetteville to be his home.
After spending much of his mid-twenties in Hot Springs helping his father at EMCAR Marble and Granite, Carlos says he knew he wanted to be back here, where he attended the U of A, to lay his roots and start a business.

Now, in just the two and half years since opening, EMCAR has risen as the top countertop resource in Northwest Arkansas. And, while it continues to provide for more and more homes here in NWA, Carlos says, “We want to make sure that we are providing quality service. As we grow, we don’t want to lose the home- and small-businessfeel.” Carlos says that part of maintaining that quality is continuing to foster a team of caring and specialized individuals.
Carlos has that personal and skillful team with him now. They help him with sales, marketing, production, and installation. And while they are young, Carlos mentions that their drive to serve other aspiring homeowners like themselves and learn with the clientele creates a beautiful finished product. One member, Hailey Whitley (project manager/marketing director) commented: “A lot of our team has young, growing families, like those that we are serving. And, they love to see we are in the same position as them, trying to create beautiful homes here in NWA.”
Tom January Floors started with the January family name back in the late ‘40s. Tom January grew up in the flooring business, alongside his father, Herb January. His father moved to Northwest Arkansas in 1945 after spending time in
here in Fayetteville. At this time, he started to learn more about the operations, as he would talk to the installers while he spread the glue.
Tom went on to attend the University of Arkansas in the ‘60s. After that,
“THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT WILL SELL PRICE, THAT’S ONE THING, AND THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT SELL QUALITY, AND THAT’S WHERE WE WANT TO BE TOO.” - TOM JANUARY
the shipyards during World War II. When the war concluded, his father began to install floors here in NWA, which started a bright future for their family.
At a young age, Tom was helping his dad by sweeping the floors and stacking the linoleum that was to be installed. At just 14 years old, Tom was carrying the some-odd 70-pound box of tile to the installers. Eventually, Tom, at 17 years old, found himself even closer to the installation process. His job was spreading the glue for the new floors. He remembers starting that job at the city library
he joined the army. When he got back, he, his brother, and his dad continued in the flooring business in Fayetteville. Later in 1991, Tom and his family Cathy, Chris, and Wade, incorporated much of his flooring values into opening Tom January Floors.
The family’s first store was located on Township where Tom could remember the road still being gravel back in the day. He recalled how the community used to fish the creek on the road after a hard day’s work. In the early 2000s, the store grew and moved further up Township Street to its current location.
As Tom and I walked around his store on Township, he showed me everything from the showroom to the custom library he built to hold books of available products. As we rounded the corner to the front door, he pointed to the back of the store toward his sons, Chris and Wade. He said they work as a group to maintain their strong family work values and continue the legacy that started many years ago.
After starting his business in 1991, Tom said he was happy to just get the business of five bathrooms a week. But, Tom’s persistent work ethic and love of this community gave way to growth. “Now, we are doing whole homes, and, sometimes, we do whole neighborhoods,” he said. “We’re working from Bella Vista to the tunnel near Winslow and even to Harrison.”
Tom is proud to say that his family has served Northwest Arkansas for over 75 years. And, with his sons to carry on his and his father’s work, it is a legacy that will continue to serve Fayetteville families moving forward.
“WE’RE WORKING FROM BELLA VISTA TO THE TUNNEL NEAR WINSLOW AND EVEN TO HARRISON.” - TOM JANUARY
One pillar that has been instrumental in the business’ growth and legacy is Tom’s commitment to the customer and to having an excellent product to install. “We want to provide you, the customer, with something that will be there for the longterm,” Tom said. “There are people that will sell price, that’s one thing, and there are people that sell quality, and that’s where we want to be…with something that will fit your budget and that you will be really happy with.”
Before I could go, Tom told me that a few years ago, a contractor came into the store frustrated and tired. He was complaining about what a nightmare it was to get these floors up from the old library that needed to be replaced. Tom, in recognition of his job well done at 17 years old, turned to the contractor and said thank you.
STYLE YOUR HOME IN TONES AND TEXTURES WITH DESIGN HELP FROM HOUZZ INTERIOR DESIGN EXPERTS
ARTICLE BY NICOLETTE MARTINDecorate your space with handmade textures such as the modern, maker revival of 1970s macramé and year-round tropical feel of wicker. MACRAMÉ Made through knotting instead of weaving, macramé can add a unique touch in many various ways. Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space... Look for other unexpected places to add a natural twist to your home with a new material woven into your palette.”
Houzz contributor Katie Treggiden offers many ways to incorporate natural materials and natural-state timber into your home, including using wood to cover one wall in a home for a pleasing accent wall; featuring your firewood as a striking, stacked display; and mixing different types of wood and different finishes in the same space. “A simple way to incorporate the wood trend is to expose structural wooden beams already present in your home,” Katie says. “Instead of painting them or boxing them in, leave them raw or give them a coat of wax to enrich the tones.”
Do you feel like your all-white room is missing something? Houzz contributor Kelly Porter bets what’s missing is energy.
“The best way to add a spark to any space,” she says, “is with bright color.”
Kelly says green is one of the easiest colors to live with, looking organic even in its more vivid tones.
“When searching for the perfect bright green, think springtime—fresh green grass and newly sprouted leaves,” she says. “These greens have lively undertones that will look comfortable and warm in your white space.
Other colors Kelly recommends adding as accents are yellow, royal blue, orange, blue-purple, red-purple and sky blue.

Circles is an organization dedicated to poverty reduction. Their initiative is meant to develop upward mobility for people in poverty. One way they create upward mobility for those involved is to build social capital. Social capital means a network of shared friendships that connect individuals to wider communities. Fayetteville has a chapter of Circles that was started by locals, Christina and TJ Williams.
Christina: “TJ and I have been in Northwest Arkansas for a long time, and we wanted to put ourselves in places with people that experience Fayetteville differently than us...We began to be frustrated that the people we met with were not able to move up and out of poverty. We saw a lot of the work being done was poverty management, and we wanted to see poverty being reduced.”
Christina: “It means creating the opportunity for upward mobility, in terms of economic success, building social capital, and power/autonomy. This also includes getting barriers removed that keep people stuck in poverty. We want the people who are working hard and doing the right things to see progress upward.”
