When you find the right dealer for your automotive needs, it makes sense to just stick with it.
That is what Nancy Ploener has done. Recently, she bought her fourth car from Cronic in the past 15 years. One was an Infiniti, but the other three, including her new one, have all been the same – the Nissan Altima.
As soon as she drove her 2025 Altima off the lot, she took it on vacation to the North Carolina coast – a 1,500-mile roundtrip – and was even more pleased with the purchase after that trip than when she bought it.
“There were no problems, and the gas mileage was great,” said Ploener, who added
that her Cronic salesman, Jason, called her shortly after the trip to follow up and make sure she was happy with the new car. “It was just as comfortable as my last car.”
She wanted to save money on gas and insurance while driving a vehicle that will last a long time. That is what the folks at Cronic put her in, and she trusts them to always do her right.
“From a customer perspective, they are very attentive,” she said of the Cronic staff. “They are not pushy. They are friendly, gracious, and they honor each other’s clients. I think there’s camaraderie in there that you don’t always see in the auto industry. And I never felt pressured, never.”
CHRYSLER
Ploener also appreciates the dealer, Wanda Cronic Howell’s connection to the local community, having interacted with her at various business functions.
“They live here and they’re committed to the area to help better it — not just for business purposes,” she said. “I really feel Wanda has a heart for the community. That speaks volumes.”
Are you looking for the right vehicle for you? We invite you to test drive an Altima or any of our Nissans at Cronic’s dealership in Griffin. Just a short drive from Fayetteville. Call (678) 967-2277 to schedule your test drive or start shopping online at www.croniccars.com.
My mother had a little magnet on her refrigerator that read: “My three favorite words—Let’s eat out!” And while “I love you” is music to my ears when my husband says it, I’ll admit, “Let’s eat out” gives me a special kind of joy too.
Mom and I probably ate out more than any mother and daughter should. She was a wonderful cook—she just didn’t like the doing part. For her, sitting at a table while someone else dirtied the pots, served the food, and washed the dishes was the ultimate slice of heaven.
Our favorite haunt wasn’t the fancy “bougie” spots—it was good old Marc’s Big Boy. It had everything we needed: friendly wait staff who knew our names, clean silverware, tall glasses of (gasp!) unsweetened tea, and comfort food that hit all the right notes. Our go-to was Fish ’n Chips, served in a newspaper-lined basket with the crispiest fries and the most perfect tartar sauce. The batter was light, crunchy, and wrapped around the best cod you could ask for—flaky, tender, and delicious.
And then there was the pièce de résistance: Big Boy’s fresh strawberry pie. Imagine strawberries piled half a foot high, bathed in glossy glaze, crowned with clouds of fresh, whipped cream. Pure bliss, and the dreamiest ending to every meal.
I think Mom loved that I loved food as much as she did. Her dislike for cooking, however, didn’t rub off on me—thankfully! I adore being in the kitchen. Give me sharp knives to chop a fresh mirepoix (that classic onion-carrot-celery trio) and I’m in my happy place. Side note: learning knife skills really does make cooking feel like a craft, not a chore.
So as you enjoy our October Food & Drink issue, I hope you find joy in every bite—whether you’re cooking at home or grinning when someone says those magic words: “Let’s eat out!”
May your food and drink be blessed,

FIVE OF FAYETTE COUNTY'S BEST MIXOLOGISTS SHOOK AND STIRRED THEIR BEST FOR OUR INAUGURAL TOURNAMENT.
Last May, when I was already over the summer and longing for cooler days, I had this idea to highlight the mixology talent in our little hamlet. Luckily, I have some friends who are willing to day-drink with me, for a good cause, of course. Thankfully, the morning was a crisp sixty degrees, which got us all in the autumnal spirit. The rules: create 3 cocktails - a martini, a bourbon/whiskey drink, and a signature cocktail. Must be fall-themed and scored 1-5 on presentation, balance, complexity, and creativity. Here are their stories.
“Behind the bar, I get to blend that passion with the craft of cocktail making, creating experiences, sharing laughs, and turning moments into memories.” Cassie Hartshorn
The youngest of our competitors, Cassie Hartshorn, who started serving jaw-dropping cocktails at the age of 18 and is the only one to receive perfect scores on a single cocktail, is our Tasters Tournament Champion!
After a few short years behind the bar, she is already primed to take over as Bar Manager at Positano in the Avenue. Whilst the actual menu is created by the renowned Berin Islami, the outgoing Bar Manager set to open his own upscale Italian restaurant, Luga, in Decatur this fall, Cassie’s ability to craft the perfect rendition of these incredible and creative recipes is unmatched.
This duo not only prepared the 3 required cocktails but crafted a full pairing with incoming autumnal plates. Starting with their signature cocktail, which also happens to be the winner, Pear’d In Spice. A spiced rum with pear liqueur, apple juice, house-made cinnamon simple syrup, and lemon juice, garnished with a dehydrated pear slice, and paired with their Honey Whipped Ricotta Toast.
Second was the Lucille, a pecan butter-washed rye whiskey with lemon, agave, fig liqueur, and walnut bitters served with their new Fiore dei Fichi pizza. Finally was their infamous Espresso Martini with a pumpkin-spiced rim and their incredible tiramisu.
Cassie is touted by several of her competitors as “the one to watch”, and they love chatting with her whenever she visits their high tops to learn, taste, and collaborate. The feedback I see not only from her devoted regulars, but amongst her peers as well, tells me she has really got something special.
Madison is a true craftsman, creating all of his own mixers, syrups, and much of the seasonal bar menu. This is the guy you geek out with over the history of spirits and their distillers. He created three beautiful cocktails: Golden Hour Sour - who knew a whiskey beverage could be so refreshing, with fresh orange juice and honey simple syrup, Rosemary’s Cosmo – a vodka starter with pomegranate juice and a fired rosemary sprig, tart yet smooth, and his signature cocktail Autumn In New York – a hot take on a Manhattan with an antique bitters and cherry syrup. This was a fan favorite, scoring second in the competition. Madison’s entire team collaborates to ensure that the bar and food menus are complementary. He says, “If you take really great ingredients and treat them well, you can do literally anything.”
I first met Emily, a dry-pour mobile bartender, at The Hummingbird Lounge. She became inspired at a 2018 wedding in Colorado and has been working to find the perfect horse trailer to convert into her “mobile bar cart.” Emily started our day out strong with some of her best cocktails: Scarlet Sprig – a crisp vodka martini with orange liqueur, lime and pomegranate juices, Sweet GA Brown – bourbon with pecan liqueur, walnut bitters and her homemade pecan simple syrup, and her signature cocktail Golden Orchard – a vanilla vodka with apple cider, lemon juice, pure maple syrup and a cinnamon/ sugar rim, one of my personal favorites. The ingredients are the most important part for Emily, and she grows her own herbs and makes all of her own mixers. She created the Hummingbird menu and loves to fashion customized menus for all of her guests.
John is a total ham behind the bar. He even started bartending “for the attention”, and he works hard at it. John had some of our favorite quotes and favorite concoctions of the day: The Paper Plane – more of summer style with aperol, lemon and bourbon, this one was fresh and tart, Agave Old Fashioned – he took many creative liberties with this one using tequila instead of whiskey, bitters, agave, gingerale and a slice of orange, and his signature cocktail, aptly named, the JohnTron – a sassafras forward Root Beer Float with Bailey’s and Kahlua. I’m not a sweet cocktail lover, but this one had me second-guessing. John prides himself on not being formally trained, but learning on the job in a “trial by fire” atmosphere. A maverick bartender who never measures, your chances of getting a unique drink and a ton of laughs are very high.
Sweet Greg got thrown into this competition at the very last minute, but was gracious and pulled together an excellent lineup, and he scored extra points for being so adorable. Greg served us 3 simple, yet creative classics: Espresso Martini – very traditional and very coffee forward, a must for all you caffeine-ophiles, Blueberry Whiskey Sour – a fun twist on a traditional whiskey sour tempered with the sweetness of the blueberry, and finally a signature cocktail, Spicy Jalapeno Pineapple Margarita – a delightfully spicy take on the margarita with a Tajin rim that balances this drink beautifully. A Florida native, Greg graduated from Spalding High School and immediately became involved in the hospitality industry, serving at HOBNOB for over a year now. Definitely worth checking out, especially on a Trivia Tuesday or when they’re hosting live music.
ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH + PANCETTA AND SAGE + PENNE = PERFECT FALL PASTA.
ingredients: FALL PENNE WITH ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH
Servings: 4
• 2 1/4 lbs. butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 3 cups)
• 1/4 cup olive oil, divided
• kosher salt
• 1 pound penne pasta
• 3 ounces pancetta, sliced 1/4-inch thick and cut into small dice
• 2 shallots, thinly sliced crosswise
• 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
• 10 fresh sage leaves, coarsely chopped
• 1/2 cup finely grated Pecorino Romano cheese
• 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
ARTICLE BY PAULI REEP
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Place butternut squash on a rimmed baking sheet and toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Season with salt.
Transfer to the oven and roast until the squash is browned and tender, for about 15 minutes. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Generously salt the water. Add pasta and cook according to package directions.
Drain pasta, reserving up to 2 cups of cooking liquid. Set pasta and reserved cooking liquid aside. Meanwhile, heat the remaining 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add pancetta and cook until just crisp, 4 to 5 minutes. Add shallots, crushed red pepper, and sage. Cook until shallots are soft, for 4 to 5 minutes.
Add penne and squash and toss gently, adding reserved pasta cooking liquid as necessary to moisten.
Add cheese and black pepper, and cook, tossing gently, until pasta and squash are heated through.
Serve immediately with more grated cheese, if desired.

Most locals know Falcon Field at the Atlanta Regional Airport in Peachtree City, but did you know it’s home to Airbase Georgia? This chapter of the Commemorative Air Force acquires, restores, and preserves historic combat aircraft in flying condition. Airbase Georgia focuses on World War II planes and teaching WWII history through exhibits, programs, and living aviation. Visitors can tour the facility on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9 AM to 4 PM. As the Atlanta metro’s only flying museum, it also hosts the Atlanta Air Show and offers unforgettable Warbird Rides in authentic WWII aircraft.
If you’ve visited the Peachtree City Farmer’s Market in the Aberdeen Village Shopping Center on a Saturday, chances are you’ve seen Blue Donkey Coffee. Founded in 2012, the company set out to craft innovative iced coffee using fresh, local, and 100% natural ingredients. Since then, it has grown steadily, expanding to multiple locations across the Atlanta metro area while maintaining its roots in Fayetteville, where the main roastery is located. The roastery isn’t a traditional café but serves as the hub for roasting and pickups. Visitors are welcome during operating hours to collect orders and see where the magic begins.
Fine Arts and Crafts Entrepreneurs, Inc. (FAACE) was founded in 2011 by local artists seeking to create more opportunities in Fayette County’s creative community. NATURE'S AUTUMN-TIME GIFT FOR BODY, MIND, AND SKIN IS HERE TO ENJOY ALL SEASON LONG.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAM REID
There is something undeniably special about pumpkin. Beyond its cheerful orange glow and cozy associations with pies and lattes, the pumpkin is an ancient, nutrient-dense powerhouse that has been used across cultures for centuries. In fact, long before it became Instagramworthy autumn décor, the pumpkin was a dietary staple for Indigenous Peoples of North America, valued for its versatility, storability, and healing properties.
Today, modern science confirms what tradition has long known: pumpkin is more than seasonal décor, it is a holistic wellness ally for the kitchen, the spa, and even the medicine cabinet.
Pumpkin flesh is low in calories yet abundant in essential nutrients. A single cup of cooked pumpkin delivers a healthy dose of vitamin A, vital for immune support, eye health, and cell regeneration. It’s also packed with vitamin C, essential for collagen production and skin healing, and vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress.
The pumpkin’s orange hue comes from beta-carotene, a plant pigment with powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Add in a healthy dose of potassium for heart health and magnesium for muscle function, and pumpkin becomes less of a holiday indulgence and more of a daily health investment.
While pumpkin flesh gets most of the culinary glory, its seeds - often overlooked - are nutritional gems. Also known as pepitas, pumpkin seeds are rich in protein, fiber, and heart-healthy fats. They are one of the best plant-based sources of
“ALSO KNOWN AS PEPITAS, PUMPKIN SEEDS ARE RICH IN PROTEIN, FIBER, AND HEART-HEALTHY FATS.”
magnesium, which supports hundreds of enzymatic functions in the body.
Pumpkin seeds also boast zinc, an immune-boosting mineral essential for wound healing and skin health, and tryptophan, an amino acid that aids in serotonin production, contributing to better mood and sleep. Lightly toasted with olive oil and sea salt, they make a nutrient-packed snack.
One of the most luxurious ways to enjoy pumpkin is to let it nourish your skin directly. The enzymes in pumpkin act as natural exfoliants, gently
dissolving dead skin cells and revealing a brighter, smoother complexion. Its high vitamin A and C content works to fade dark spots, soften fine lines, and support overall skin renewal.
A simple, spa-worthy pumpkin face mask can be made by combining two tablespoons of puréed pumpkin with one teaspoon of raw honey and a tablespoon of plain yogurt. Try not to add too much yogurt, like I did. Apply to clean skin, leave on for 10–15 minutes, and rinse with warm water. You won’t regret it!
Pumpkin’s benefits extend to hair care as well. A blend of pumpkin purée and coconut oil can be used as a deeply
moisturizing hair mask, restoring shine and vitality, especially as cooler weather saps moisture from strands.
CREATIVE USES FOR PUMPKIN
• Baking: Use pumpkin purée to enrich breads, scones, or gnocchi dough, adding natural sweetness and moisture.
• Garnishes: Sprinkle roasted pumpkin seeds over salads, risottos, or grain bowls for crunch and nutrition.
• Smoothie Boost: Blend pumpkin purée with banana, almond butter, and cinnamon for a velvety, nutrient-rich breakfast.
• Body Scrub: Mix pumpkin purée with brown sugar and a drizzle of pumpkin seed oil for a seasonal, skin-softening exfoliant.
What makes pumpkin extraordinary is its balance of practicality and pleasure. It is as comfortable in a Michelin-starred menu as it is in a grandmother’s kitchen. In every form - flesh, seed, oil - it offers nourishment that contributes to overall good health.
This October, as you carve, roast, or blend, consider the deeper story of this golden fruit. The pumpkin is not merely a symbol of autumn. It is a gift that invites us to savor the richness of the season with every bite, sip, and self-care ritual.

When it comes to breast cancer, early detection is vital. Ladies, get your mammogram!
According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 13% of women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is the key to treating and surviving breast cancer. If detected early enough, some tumors do not require chemotherapy or radiation treatment. There are several ways to detect breast cancer. In addition to mammograms, doctors also recommend regular self-examinations. When conducting a self-examination, a woman should look for any changes in appearance and feel for unusual lumps, skin changes, or swelling. A clinical breast exam is also helpful.
“Mammograms alone are not enough,” said Nicole Sroka, M.D., a board-certified breast surgeon at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. “Mammography detects around 84% of breast cancers in women without symptoms. If you add in an ultrasound, that number increases to 89%. By adding clinical breast exams, that number increases to 92%.”
Women ages forty and over should resolve to make a mammogram and a breast exam part of their annual physical examinations. In a standard mammography, there are two pictures taken of each breast. When that first picture is taken, the breast is compressed between a plastic plate, and the tissue is squished together to form one image.
Unfortunately, this technique causes tissue to overlap on itself when radiologists look at the final picture. A cancer may be obscured by surrounding dense breast tissue, making it difficult to detect. Alternatively, a woman may be recalled for a finding that represents normal, overlapping tissue. This is known as a false-positive. Many women get recalled after a screening mammogram because radiologists see images that look like breast cancer, but when you do the initial workup, there’s no cancer.
Tomosynthesis, or 3D Mammography, combats this problem by taking 15 mini-exposures instead of one. This form of imaging produces a series of contiguous, thin slices of breast tissue, allowing doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time.
By performing regular self-examinations and getting an annual mammogram, any changes occurring in the breast tissue should hopefully be discovered early enough to detect breast cancer at an early stage.
