Joyful Countenance

Have you ever met someone who just radiates lighthearted joy—pure sweetness, love, and happiness? I have, and I was lucky enough to call him Grampa.

Carlo Joseph Conforti was born in Chicago in September 1894. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1918 and served in World War I as a gunner on a PT boat, which left him with permanent hearing loss. After "The War to end all wars,” he returned home, met my grandmother, married, had three children, worked hard as a farmer and a sheet metal worker, and stayed ridiculously happy his entire life. I mean, look at that face! If that’s not a joyful countenance, I don’t know what is.

If you read my Lifestyle Letter last month, you know that he and my gramma lived next door to me while I was growing up. The conversations that took place in that house between my grandparents were nothing short of hysterical due to his extreme hearing loss from The War.

Here's a snippet:

Gramma (in a booming, shrill tone): "Carlo! Turn your hearing aid up!"

Grampa (in a thick, Chicago-Italian accent): "What'chu say, Frazte? You're afraid of a cup? What cup?"

And this went on and on and on until no one really knew how the conversation started in the first place. I swear he knew what she said, but he also knew his misunderstanding would drive her crazy. So funny. Oh, and he called her "Fratze," which he told everyone meant "funny face" in German. Nope. It means "ugly face" or "ugly mug". Hahahaaa! I believe he knew exactly what that word meant, but it was always meant endearingly.

My grandfather lived through the Turn of the Century, WWI, the Spanish Flu, and the Great Depression. He sent his eldest son to fight in WWII. His middle son died in the 1970s. His youngest son, my father, cared for him until he died on Father's Day in 1986 at the age of 91.

I loved spending time with that precious man. Like my grandmother, I wish I had asked him more questions about his life... what a life he lived!

I'm excited to share stories about some fantastic men in our community doing fantastic work for and with our neighbors. I hope you have fun celebrating the men in your lives this month!

God's blessings to you all,

June 2025

Thomas Dorsey

Thomas Dorsey has deep roots in Fayette County, and his name is tied to one of the county’s bestknown landmarks—The Holliday Dorsey Fife House. The home’s builder, Dr. John Stiles Holliday, owned Thomas’s great-great-great-grandmother, Silvey Holliday. She would eventually marry Thomas’s great-great-great-grandfather and namesake, owned by the home’s second owner, Solomon Dorsey.   Thomas grew up in Red Oak, but often visited Fayette County as a child when his grandfather would show him landmarks and share their family history.  “It was like Mayberry,” Thomas said. These visits helped foster his love and appreciation of history, and as an adult, he often conducted historical research in Fayetteville. In 2000, Thomas moved to Fayetteville so his children, Marcus, Tamara, and Dayna, could receive a quality education in Fayette County’s schools.

After moving here, Thomas quickly became involved in the community. He is a member of the Fayette County Kiwanis Club, Friends of the Fayetteville Cemetery, and a board member of the Fayette County Historical Society. He particularly enjoys sharing the history of Fayette County with visitors at Starrs Mill, which opens monthly from April through November.

Thomas is also a member of the Union Benevolent Aid Legacy (UBAL). His great-great-great-grandfather, Thomas, and his son, Isaac, were founding members of the Union Benevolent Aid Society in 1885. The Society purchased land, now part of the Fayetteville Cemetery, to become a black cemetery, and helped with medical and burial expenses as well as other needs in the black community. Thomas is proud to continue his family heritage of helping others. “I love volunteering. I’m working in the spirit of my ancestors.”   CONTINUED >

Leonardo McClarty

Leonardo McClarty, President and CEO of the Fayette Chamber of Commerce, brings a lifetime of purpose, passion, and public service to his role. A Georgia native, as early as middle school, Leonardo developed a fascination with urban development while watching the Georgia Dome rise from the ground. That fascination evolved into a lifelong commitment to community and economic development.

Leonardo majored in political science and urban studies at Furman University. He later earned a Master’s in City and Regional Planning from Clemson University and then completed an internship with the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. A decade later, he returned to that very Chamber as its President and CEO.

Leonardo’s early professional journey also included roles with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and DeKalb County Economic Development, where he gained hands-on experience in project management and neighborhood revitalization. After his tenure at the DeKalb Chamber, Leonardo went on to lead the Howard County Chamber in Maryland. Over nine impactful years there, he drove measurable growth, deepened community partnerships, and was ultimately recognized in 2022 as Maryland’s Chamber Executive of the Year.

Leonardo and his wife, married for 22 years, are the proud parents of three daughters, including a set of twins and is a man of deep faith and family values. “Your name is all you have,” his great-grandmother would often say - a lesson he lives daily.

Now at the helm of the Fayette Chamber, Leonardo is guiding the organization through an accreditation process with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, aiming for recognition by 2026. “I want the Fayette Chamber to be part of the Fayette community brand that exemplifies excellence.”

Adam Glendye

Story by Sydney Kate Lewis

Adam Glendye has always been a leader. Whether serving as captain of his high school sports team or club in graduate school, “Being part of something bigger than myself is a fundamental part of who I am.”

In 2014, Adam and his wife, Katie Belle, moved to Fayette County from Buckhead. After spending years getting lost in the Atlanta sea, the two moved to Fayetteville after seeing the ample opportunities to meet and collaborate with so many people, especially considering, according to Adam, the best way to meet people is through community service.

As a therapist, Adam recognizes himself as an advocate for reducing the stigma behind mental health and an ambassador of the normal person asking for support so they can be better. This translates into community service, making himself known in the community so people feel more comfortable and inclined to ask him for help.

It is with this belief that Adam joined the Rotary three months before even moving to Fayette County in 2014. Later on, Adam became the clinical advisor of The Eden Project in 2016 and served with the state DUI court for five years, running the clinical addiction and veteran program. In 2021-2022, Adam served as president of the Peachtree City Rotary, a role which led him to be named “Young Game Changer of the Year” by the Fayette Chamber of Commerce and “Distinguished Alumni of the Year” by Richmont Graduate University. Adam’s desire to make the community healthier derives from a 90s movie, Pay It Forward, which demonstrates the direct impact of a person on a community and beyond. CONTINUED >

Mayor Eric Dial

Mayor of the City of Tyrone, Eric Dial, has long been dedicated to serving others. With experience in both government and the nonprofit sector, he felt a strong calling to help preserve the character of his hometown. He was first elected to the city council in 2007, then elected as Mayor in 2011. With three sons in elementary school, he and his wife were especially motivated to protect and strengthen their community.

Mayor Dial also serves as Executive Director of Fayette Forward, a nonprofit focused on promoting community development, economic growth, and quality of life throughout Fayette County. A key initiative of the organization is the creation of a countywide, multi-use/hybrid path system designed to support smart, connected growth.

In spring of 2021, Eric began losing weight and muscle mass, especially in his legs. After visiting numerous doctors, he was referred to Emory and diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

“Thousands of people were praying for me. One day, while lying face down in my bed, I suddenly started kicking my legs and lifting my rear end. I had full range of motion! It was completely spontaneous. We returned to Emory, and the doctor said, ‘You don’t have ALS.’”

Eric believes God miraculously healed him. “Since then, I’ve regained weight, strength, and stamina. The major symptoms are gone. I believe God has a greater purpose for my life. I feel called to fulfill the roles He’s given me — to serve others and ultimately glorify Him.”

FUTURE CHARGER!

The Electric Dodge Charger has arrived, and it’s Muy Caliente!

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY BYRON PUGH

Blending classic muscle car aesthetics with cutting-edge technology, the new Dodge Charger makes a striking impression! Its aggressive, aerodynamic design retains the bold lines and curves that have come to define Dodge, while its electric vehicle (EV) technology promises a thrilling driving experience. Recently, FCL had an opportunity to visit the Cronic Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/ Ram sales professional, Walter Moore, and drive this bad boy!

Our car came in “Peel Out” Orange, and dual electric motors deliver peel-out torque, propelling the Charger from 0 to 60 in just over three seconds. Inside, the Charger is packed with modern conveniences, featuring a spacious cabin with high-quality materials and an intuitive infotainment system that keeps drivers connected.

During the drive, we were impressed with the quiet torque and power our Scat Packequipped car delivered. But when it’s time for some fun, a quick tap on the display and the car turns into a screaming monster, complete with V8 roar! All this while delivering 78 MPGe... mind. blown.

Walter informed us that not every Chrysler Dodge dealership can sell the new Charger Daytona EVs, only those that have been specifically certified. Cronic is proud to be one of those dealerships, and they invite you to visit them in Griffin and check out their new showroom and EV offerings!

Sean O’Keefe - from private chef for the wealthy, to purpose-driven powerhouse for nonprofits.

The Greater

Good

Born in the beautiful landscapes of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Sean O’Keefe’s journey from a Canadian coastal town to the heart of Georgia’s nonprofit scene is a tale of culinary passion, serendipitous opportunities, and a very personal commitment to the greater good. Greater … Good.

Sean’s culinary expedition began in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where his mastery in the kitchen caught the attention of influential clients. A catering event led to a life-changing opportunity - an invitation to the United States in 1995. Embracing what would become a gastronomic adventure, Sean traveled around Southern California, where his skills and expertise as a private chef opened doors

Sean and his husband, Marty Helling, in front of Kicker's Rock in the Galápagos Islands.

to the homes of Hollywood celebrities and billionaires. His global culinary adventures not only refined his palate but also deepened his appreciation for diverse cultures and cuisines.

After years of serving the elite, Sean sought a more inclusive path. “I decided that I would do what I had done for the very few, for the very many.”

Relocating to Georgia, he formed Sean O’Keefe Enterprises, A Hospitality & Media Marketing Company. Sean’s mission was, and still is, clear: to bring the high-caliber experiences once reserved for a select few to the broader community, especially nonprofits that lack the resources for grand events.

EMPOWERING NONPROFITS THROUGH CREATIVE PARTNERSHIPS

Understanding the unique challenges nonprofits face - be it limited budgets, donor engagement, or brand recognition - Sean leveraged his talents and connections to create incredibly impactful events. By fostering strategic partnerships between nonprofits and participating organizations, he maximized resources and amplified outreach. “This is what makes this work so exciting.” More than 25 nonprofits, including Two Sparrows Village, the Fayette Democratic Party, and AVPRIDE, have benefited from Sean’s innovative approach to fundraising and his

relational equity. Sean’s requests are rarely, if ever, met with resistance. His work with organizations like the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation underscores his dedication to causes close to his heart.

ADAPTING TO THE VIRTUAL LANDSCAPE

Moving from physical event space to the virtual world proved to be an interesting evolution for Sean O’Keefe Enterprises. The pandemic created an opportunity for people to reinvent themselves, which prompted Sean to explore and pivot to virtual platforms. Embracing this shift, he launched “The Charity Case,” a television initiative that spotlighted nonprofits and their missions. This venture not only maintained engagement during lockdowns but also expanded the reach of these organizations, showcasing their work to a broader audience. CONTINUED >

“SOCIAL

RESPONSIBILITY

FOR ME SITS IN A PLACE OF AWARENESS, OF WHERE WE ARE IN THE EXACT MOMENT THAT OUR GIFT IS BEING MADE. OUR GIFT CAN BE CASH. IT CAN BE TIME. IT CAN BE RESOURCES.”
Sean at the Kimpton Mas Olas Resort and Spa in Baja California.

A PHILOSOPHY ROOTED IN SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Sean believes that everyone has a role in fostering a compassionate society. “My heart truly wants to leave the world in a better place.” Through his work, Sean is a contributor, connector, and catalyst for positive change. “Social responsibility for me sits in a place of awareness, of where we are in the exact moment that our gift is being made. Our gift can be cash. It can be time. It can be resources.” As Sean creates meaningful partnerships, he is also cultivating a charity’s brand loyalty that encourages corporations to support causes that align with their values.

PERSONAL TOUCHES AND LASTING IMPACT

Sean thrives in nonprofit environments with small, close-knit teams of about three to six people. “These organizations are just the right size—not so large that they have unlimited resources, but big enough to benefit from the high-impact, elegant events we create,” he explains. Over the past 12 years, Sean O’Keefe Enterprises has helped nonprofits raise more than $25 million.

Sean is a regular lifestyle and wellness contributor for major networks like NBC, CBS, FOX, and The Weather Channel. The Sean O’Keefe brand is a symbol of excellence in Atlanta and across the Southeast, as Sean has evolved into a global travel journalist and lifestyle icon.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Sean remains grounded in his roots. Inspired by his grandfather’s culinary wisdom, his passion for cooking shines through in the grand experiences he curates - and in the quiet joy of tending his backyard garden, where a colorful variety of tomatoes grow, destined for his beloved mid-summer tomato pies.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

At 55, Sean continues to merge his passions for travel, culinary arts, and philanthropy. He believes in “voluntourism” - traveling with purpose - and aims to leave a positive footprint wherever he goes. His belief that “laughter is the greatest of all medicines” and that leading with the heart fosters genuine connections encapsulates his approach to both life and work.

Sean continues to look back on the potentiality of what he might do for others. “My work has given me a different perspective on how the world works, and how life is, and how life ought to be. I believe there is an opportunity and wealth within travel where we can do good, travel well, and leave a kinder footprint on the places we go.”

In A Pickle

PICKLE-BRINED CHICKEN WINGS SOAR TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH OUR ALABAMA WHITE SAUCE.

PROVIDED

I’ve spent years searching for the perfect wing flavor, never quite satisfied, until I heard a podcast suggestion: brining chicken wings in pickle juice. It sounded strange at first, but it yields incredibly tender and flavorful wings! Since then, I save pickle juice from every jar I buy just to recreate these beloved wings. If I run out of pickle juice, olive juice works too. I air fry mine, but if you don’t have an air fryer, cook them as you normally would. Don’t forget to toss them in a buttery dill sauce and try the Alabama white BBQ sauce for an extra layer of goodness!

PICKLE JUICE BRINED WINGS ALABAMA

ingredients

• 2 pounds chicken wings (flats and drummettes)

• Pickle juice - enough to cover wings

• 1 – 2 teaspoons garlic salt

• ¼ teaspoon pepper

• 6 tablespoons butter

• A few dashes of hot sauce

• 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped

instructions

1. Place chicken wings in a non-reactive container and pour pickle juice over chicken wings until completely covered.

2. Place it in the fridge and let it marinate, covered, for at least 8 hours.

3. Drain wings, discard pickle juice, and completely pat wings dry.

4. Put dried wings in a bowl and sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper. Mix well.

5. Place wings in an air fryer basket, being careful not to crowd. Cook at 400 degrees for 28 minutes, turning every 8 minutes until crispy. If you don't have an air fryer, bake them in the oven for 35 - 40 minutes at 400 degrees, flipping halfway through.

6. Melt the butter and add a few splashes of hot sauce of your choice and mix in a bowl. Add wings and completely cover with butter mixture. Sprinkle with fresh dill and toss a few times, and serve with my white barbeque sauce.

ingredients

• 1 ½ cups mayonnaise (I prefer Duke’s)

• ¼ cup water

• ¼ cup white wine vinegar

• 1 tablespoon pepper, coarsely ground

• 1 tablespoon Creole mustard

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon sugar

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish

instructions

Whisk all ingredients together until blended. Dip your pickle juice-brined wings in this sauce and taste the joy!  Store in the refrigerator for 1 - 2 weeks.
