We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty.
But the truth is - that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life.
We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built.
In the last few months I've really been analyzing my relationship with my kids, how our family operates as a unit and what we love spending our time doing. The way I made this more clear, was to first focus on the things that I don't love spending time on. For our family - it’s screens. For yours, it may be too many busy weeknights away from home or not enough dinners around the table together. But I've noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail or going out to find a fun cookie place we've never been to before in a different part of town.
Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar.

Where to escape this summer?
If everyone you know is currently sipping an aperol spritz in Europe, it’s not too late to join them. We know the hot spots and what’s available for a chic, coastal escape.
When the days get longer and the Mediterranean sun is at its peak, Europe’s coastline turns into one giant sun-drenched playground. Summer here isn’t just a season — it’s a whole lifestyle. From the laid-back beaches of Mallorca to the colorful cliffs of the Amalfi Coast and the effortless glamour of the French Riviera, these iconic spots are what summer dreams are made of.
Mallorca has long been a favorite summer escape for Europeans, and it’s easy to see why. The island has this perfect balance: beautiful beaches, rugged mountains, charming villages, and a real sense of authenticity that still feels untouched.
If you’re chasing the ultimate beach day, head to the coves of Cala Deià or Cala Llombards, where the water is so clear it looks
almost fake. In Palma, you’ll find a mix of old-world history and cool new energy — think Gothic cathedrals, buzzing tapas bars, and little boutiques tucked into ancient stone streets.
Up in the village of Deià, La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel feels like a secret hideaway. Surrounded by olive groves and mountains, it’s the kind of place where you lose track of time lounging by the pool or wandering through art galleries.
If you’ve got a car, the drive through the Tramuntana mountains is stunning — stop in Valldemossa or Sóller for coffee and pastries (and maybe a few hundred photos). And don’t miss a long, lazy seafood lunch at a beachside chiringuito where the only thing on your agenda is deciding between another plate of gambas or a siesta.
The Amalfi Coast is pure magic — a string of colorful towns clinging to cliffs, where every view is somehow more beautiful than the last.
In Positano, life moves at its own deliciously slow pace. Spend your days wandering up and down its steep, winding alleys (yes, your calves will burn, but it’s worth it), browsing linen shops
La Residencia, Belmond - Fresh off a visit to this gorgeous property, I can’t stop talking about it and booking it for my clients. I know they will love it just as much as I did! Pro tip: order the Airs of Tramontana for a refreshing cocktail!
and stopping for lemon granita whenever you need a break. Better yet, hop on a boat and explore the coastline — Capri is just a short ride away and absolutely lives up to the hype.
For something a little quieter but just as dreamy, base yourself in Amalfi at Hotel Santa Caterina. Set in a historic villa with jaw-dropping views, a private beach club, and gardens filled with citrus trees, it’s basically Italian summer bottled up in one perfect hotel.
Ravello is another must — perched high above the coast, it’s all romantic villas, panoramic gardens, and outdoor concerts under the stars. And don’t even think about leaving the Amalfi Coast without eating your body weight in seafood pasta and sipping an icy shot of homemade limoncello.
The Côte d’Azur just has that vibe — a mix of old-school glamour, effortless style, and sparkling blue water at every turn.
Nice is the perfect starting point, with its wide seaside promenades, colorful markets, and cool blend of French and Italian influences. But if you want to lean all the way into Riviera magic, make your way to Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes. This legendary hotel has been the spot for artists, writers, and movie stars for over a century — and it still feels every bit as special today. Picture a saltwater infinity pool carved into the rocks, private cabanas, and chilled rosé that seems to magically refill itself.
Beyond Antibes, you’ve got endless options: grab a lounger at a beach club in SaintTropez, check out the yachts in Monaco, or wander through the hilltop village of SaintPaul-de-Vence, where art spills out onto every cobbled street.
And even with all the Riviera glam, there are still those perfect simple moments — a baguette, some cheese, a hidden cove, and the kind of afternoon where you lose track of time completely.
YOUR BEST SUMMER YET
Mallorca’s laid-back beauty, the Amalfi Coast’s sunsoaked charm, and the French Riviera’s effortless chic — each one offers a totally different kind of magic. Add in some of Europe’s most iconic hotels, and you’ve got the recipe for a summer you’ll be dreaming about long after the last Aperol spritz is gone.
WHERE TO STAY
• Mallorca
• La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel — An enchanting retreat nestled among olive groves and mountain views in the artists’ village of Deià.
• Amalfi Coast
• Hotel Santa Caterina — A historic clifftop villa offering timeless Italian elegance, with a private beach and terraced gardens.
• French Riviera
• Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc — A legendary Antibes icon, famed for its chic cabanas, infinity pool, and old-world Riviera glamour.

Looking for a change of scenery and inspired by the four seasons, California native Chloe Sage Castro knew the East Coast was calling. A skilled art conservator, Chloe had previously spent time here visiting family and most notably, restoring sculptures in Central Park with the Central Park Conservancy. Her passion for art conservation runs deep, so we sat down with her to learn more about the fascinating work of Sage Art Conservation.
“Sage Art Conservation primarily treats objects and sculpturesmy technical title is Objects Conservator (not Conservationist, those are the folks who work with nature).”
Q: CAN YOU GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF SAGE
A: Sage Art Conservation primarily treats objects and sculptures - my technical title is Objects Conservator (not Conservationist, those are the folks who work with nature). I can repair almost any three-dimensional object, from stone carvings to ceramics, from antique weaponry to taxidermy. I love the variety of materials that come with this field. The best definition for an art conservator is to consider us an “Art Doctor.” Sage Art Conservation takes that description to heart as we treat every piece with the utmost importance, because even sentimental value means it’s valuable to the client. If a piece is essential to my client, then it’s important to me.
Q: DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WANTED TO WORK BEHIND THE SCENES IN ART OR DID YOUR PATH EVOLVE?
A: I always knew I would work with art in one way or another. For a long time, I was either going to be an artist or maybe something with special effects makeup, but as soon as I discovered conservation, that was it for me. I was a student of both history and studio art, so being able to tie those passions together and work with historical objects and art thrilled me. It is also important to make my own paintings and sculptures, so I consider myself an artist and a conservator. I appreciate tiny details. Give me a tiny screwdriver or a tiny paintbrush and I’m very happy.
Q: CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRESERVATION, CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION?
A: Yes! I love talking about the technical theory aspect of this field. I do a bit of all three, depending on the project, the client, and the location, among other things. Every project is different.
Preservation is a non-invasive type of intervention, utilized to prevent issues before they happen. Three examples are monitoring temperature, measuring humidity levels, and pest control vigilance.
Conservation is a type of intervention in which an object is stabilized, generally as it is. This may involve minimally invasive hands-on techniques. Surface cleaning and old varnish removal are two examples.
Restoration is a more invasive intervention; usually, an object is methodically brought back to how it would have looked during a chosen time period.
It’s important to note that these definitions are very North America-focused. There are different types of answers to the theory of conservation in other parts of the world, and it’s all fascinating.
“The best definition for an art conservator is to consider us an “Art Doctor.”
Q: WHO ARE YOUR TYPICAL CLIENTS AND WHAT PIECES DO YOU COMMONLY FOCUS ON?
A: One of the best things about what I do is that I don’t have a typical client. I take on projects from private individuals to long-established museums. I also get many calls from clients and organizations about artworks or objects damaged during shipping or transportation.
The institutional projects are great; we use the same vocabulary so that we can be on the same page about a project quickly.
My private clients are wonderful, as I’ve been involved with some exquisite personal collections, and then I get to hear the individual origin stories attached to their objects.
The materials I focus on are ceramics and glass objects, but my studio is not limited to those. Recently, I completed repairs to a collection of Iñupiaq walrus ivory carvings. There are a number of other pieces that I’d love to talk about but are client privileged.
I consider myself very lucky to love what I do. I also enjoy educating others who are curious about conservation and have given several talks about my field.
“If a piece is essential to my client, then it’s important to me.”
Q: WHAT’S YOUR GUIDING PHILOSOPHY WHEN WORKING ON HISTORICAL OR PERSONALLY SIGNIFICANT OBJECTS?
A: I am a peer-reviewed member of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC), which means I follow their Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice. I will document with photographs and written reports everything I do in any given treatment and anything I do to an object will be well-researched and reversible.
While the materials conservators use are specifically developed and rigorously tested, sometimes we only learn that materials aren’t compatible years or decades down the line, or someone develops a better methodology. This requires being able to undo a repair quickly and with little to no damage to the original object. It is important that cultural heritage lasts into the future.
Q: WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING OR NOTABLE ITEM YOU HAVE WORKED ON?
A: I’ve been a working conservator for over 10 years. I’ve worked all over the country, for private collections and museums such as the Getty and SFMOMA. So while I have worked on many incredible artworks and objects, part of the job is the protection of my clients, which I take seriously.
“It is important that cultural heritage lasts into the future.”
I’ve also gotten to work on so many amazing objects and artworks that I don’t know if I can narrow it down! There was a hippopotamus carved from a gemstone that broke a foot, which was pretty spectacular. One of my favorite projects was a table lamp from the set of Casablanca. I have to stay vague, due to the exclusivity of my clients and various non-disclosure agreements, but I have been able to treat works by many artists you may know. Some of my favorites of those have been people like Ai Wei Wei, Judy Chicago, and Buckminster Fuller.
A: Looking at the before and after pictures of pieces I’ve worked on brings me immense joy, seeing that I’ve gotten to maintain cultural heritage and history for the present and the future. I love that I can make a tangible impact on history, both for collections that many people can share, and for individual clients that they can now continue to share with their families. The Thank Yous I get can be so touching. I know I’m making an impact when I’m in the middle of a treatment but the emotional aspect really hits home when a client finally sees their object in a much better state than how they first handed it to me. I’m fortunate to be part of that.

You know the feeling: You’re standing in the wine aisle, squinting at labels that sound like geography quizzes, wondering if you’re supposed to know what “carbonic maceration” means, and whether that $10 bottle with the cartoon goat on it is secretly great or just a bad idea.
Here’s the good news: Wine and spirits don’t have to be complicated. And they definitely don’t have to be pretentious. In fact, the most exciting bottles right now are the ones that break the rules—playful natural wines, bold new-world spirits and offbeat producers who care more about personality than pedigree and quality of farming. They’re the kind of bottles that don’t care if you decant, swirl, or use a mason jar. They’re made to be enjoyed, not scrutinized.
The wine industry is adapting and changing its reputation. Before, if you didn’t know the difference between Burgundy and Bordeaux, or how to pronounce “Viognier,” you might have felt like the drink wasn’t for you. Today’s wine and spirits scene is full of makers who don’t want to intimidate you. They want to invite you in. And they’re doing it by offering bottles that are: approachable but unique, affordable but thoughtful, and serious about quality, but never self-serious. If you want to explore something different, start with a few of these suggestions.
• Chillable reds – Light, juicy reds that taste amazing with a slight chill and a slice of pizza
• Orange wines – Made from white grapes with extended skin contact, orange wines are funky, textured, and weird in the best way. They taste like a cross between tea and cider and go great with spicy takeout.
• Pét-Nats (Pétillant Naturel) – These lightly sparkling natural wines are made with just one fermentation and often come in whimsical labels. They’re lively, wildly fun, and perfect for sharing with friends who might not prefer wine.
Regarding spirits, there are plenty that don’t take themselves too seriously. From craft gins to obscure liqueurs,
spirits are also loosening up—and getting more creative. Here are a few to dive into and explore further.
• Unusual botanical gins – They are not your standard London Dry. Forget those and try a gin infused with seaweed, lemongrass, or spruce tips. These bottles show off the wild side of distilling, often in colorful packaging that feels more party than dad’s after-dinner drink.
• Local craft whiskeys – These are worth discovering instead of chasing prestige brands. Smaller distilleries are producing bold, flavorful whiskeys using regional grains and aging in non-traditional ways. Some are even experimenting with mesquite smoke or beer cask finishes.
• Low-ABV curiosities – are having a moment, such as vermouths, amari, and apertifs that are often lower in alcohol but big on flavor. Sip them neat, over ice, or with soda for something refreshing and out of the ordinary.
You don’t need to pass a test to enjoy wine or spirits. You just need a good bottle that makes your Tuesday dinner feel like a celebration or spark a laugh when you pop and swizzle. There’s nothing wrong with learning and exploring the complexities of wine and spirits. But you get to like what you like. Full stop.
To assist you, look for shops that write notes about the wine or spirits as they are more focused on connection and not prestige. Ask the staff for a “weird but wonderful” recommendation. Trust us, they love that. Also, ignore price as a quality indicator. A $15 orange wine could be the best thing you’ve ever tasted.
Whether it’s a cloudy bottle of pét-nat from a garage in Austria or a small-batch rye made down the road, the world of drinks is more explorative, open, playful, and welcoming than ever. You don’t need to speak fluent “sommelier.” You don’t need a fancy glass. You just need curiosity, and maybe a corkscrew. So go ahead and grab something unfamiliar. Pour it into whatever’s clean. Take a sip. Smile. No judgment. No jargon. Just joy.

Gear: You don’t have to own a picnic basket to have a picnic. But if you do bring a basket, make sure to have some way to chill your perishables and drinks. Reusable silverware, plastic wine or drink cups, and plates often come with a picnic basket set, but can also be purchased separately. Keeping it elegant, but easy (and cool) is the key!
Accompaniments: A cheese plate with fruit is the perfect start to your picnic fare. As with the cheese, your drink selections should coordinate with the main dish. For salads, pair accoutrements with the dressing in mind. A lemony herb vinaigrette dressing goes well with smooth cheeses and tart beverages such as lemonade, prosecco, or sauvignon blanc.
