CHECK OUT HOW JOHNATHAN TURNER OF JT'S BARBERSHOP HELPS KEEP OUR COMMUNITY CLEAN-CUT
HOW’D YOU GET STARTED IN THE BARBERING INDUSTRY?
Barbering has always been a part of my life, but I didn’t start barbering, officially, until I was 42 years old. I have a family member that’s a cosmetologist and when I saw her put two ponytails in a little girl’s hair, and got paid 40
was something that I could do if I found the right team of barbers, and that I did.
WHAT MAKES YOUR BARBERSHOP UNIQUE TO OTHERS?
The business model of barbershops in the Evans area are mostly franchise/

bucks, I was amazed because I knew I could do that! I used to do my little sister’s hair before school because my mom had to work. Plus, I have a military background. We always had to have a squared away haircut for work. Even in high school, I was considered a pretty boy because I always kept my haircut sharp. I know what a good haircut should look like, and I paid attention to different barbers I worked with over the years and know what I like and what I don’t like.
WHAT MADE YOU OPEN UP YOUR OWN BARBERSHOP?
I saw room for lots of growth in the barber industry, and that made me hungry to do more. When I first started, barbers I worked with weren’t utilizing what they should to market themselves as small business owners. I tried sharing my thoughts and visions, but no one was receptive of my ideas as I was the unexperienced barber. However, I knew this
commission-based barbershops. I wanted to bring a barbershop to the area where the barbers were free to be themselves and give the services that they want to the clients. We do all this and still work together as a team for the good of the barbershop as a whole.
We’re a family. We know each other well, and we know each other’s family. Everyone is passionate about barbering, everyone has their strengths, and we all learn from each other. I often look over the shoulders of my barbers to learn techniques from them!
HOW DO YOU STAY UP TO DATE WITH THE LATEST TRENDS AND TECHNIQUES IN BARBERING AND THEN INCORPORATE THOSE INTO YOUR SERVICES?
I listen to a lot of podcasts for business aspects and watch a lot of YouTube videos for different hairstyle tutorials. Sometimes I also attend

barber conventions in Atlanta, and some of the barbers go to barber conventions in other states and when they come back, we share the information with the team.
WHAT IS THE DEMOGRAPHIC OF THE CUSTOMERS AT YOUR SHOP?
Everyone and anyone. We service clients in all walks of life, but we get a lot of active-duty military, veterans, and local businessmen and their families.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMONLY ASKED FOR STYLES?
Fades and beard sculpting, but we do everything, every day! We are cutting all types of hairstyles for men, women, and kids.
HOW DO YOU FOSTER A SENSE OF COMMUNITY WITHIN YOUR BARBERSHOP, BOTH AMONG YOUR STAFF AND YOUR CUSTOMERS?
Stay professional and always treat others the way you would like to be treated!
WHAT DO YOU HOPE CUSTOMERS TAKE AWAY FROM THEIR EXPERIENCE AT YOUR SHOP, BEYOND A FANTASTIC HAIRCUT?
I want them to feel at home with our family friendly environment, and we pride ourselves on being on time for each appointment! I don’t want the clients to feel rushed, so we give ourselves enough time for each haircut.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A CHIROPRACTOR?
I have been practicing by myself for 23 years with 25 years experience.
TELL ME ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC CARE AND WHY IT'S IMPORTANT?
Chiropractors are trained in detecting and correcting spinal misalignments called subluxations. The belief is, if you release the pressure of the subluxation, which is a nerve impingement caused by swelling and bone misalignment, it allows the body to function better. This is important because the spinal column is the highway of the body in which the brain communicates to all parts of the body.
WHO NEEDS CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
Basically, if you are breathing, you can probably benefit from chiropractic care. From the newborn to the elderly, good chiropractic care can be beneficial, and the younger you start the better.
With the Gonstead Technique, five different criteria are used to determine where the specific problem is in the spinal column. Those criteria are
ARTICLE BY BAILEY HALL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DARIA TERRYvisualization, instrumentation, static palpation, motion palpation and x-ray analysis. With these criteria, I can pinpoint the issue and make the necessary specific adjustments to the spine.
WHAT OTHER SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?
We offer some of the latest and greatest modalities and therapies on the market. We offer the Summus Laser. It's a class 4 laser preprogrammed for everything needed to treat issues such as swelling and even someone who has had spinal surgery. Another therapy we recently added to the office is Shockwave therapy. It's a phenomenal device used for muscle injuries ranging from muscle tears to overstressed ligaments. It uses ultrasound to break up the scar tissue and stimulates the stem cells to release, increasing the healing process. Shockwave also claims to have a 95% effective rate for plantar fasciitis. We have the Back on Trac decompression chair, which uses gravity to help patients that have bulging discs in the spine. Intersegmental traction tables are used after adjustments to promote more motion in the spinal column and we also provide Bemer therapy, which uses sound waves to open up the capillaries in the body for greater blood and oxygen flow throughout the body. Oxygen is most important for healing.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A CHIROPRACTOR?
I love helping people and giving them hope for having a more pain free life. I do that by utilizing the Gonstead Technique. It's unlike any other method of chiropractic.
Larson Chiropractic is located at 676 Mullins Colony Drive in Evans. For more information, visit larsonchiropracticevans.com

LEARN ABOUT CLIFTON CONSTRUCTION AND THE FAMILY BEHIND IT
“
One of our core values is that we’re a faith-based company.
Rob Clifton, CEO of Clifton Construction, lives in Evans with his wife Lauren and their two kids, Haviland and Bauer. “I was born and raised in Columbia County, and I went to school for all 12 years at Augusta Christian Schools. When I graduated, I went to Auburn University for Building Construction,” he shares. Clifton Construction was started by Rob’s father 37 years ago. He took Rob to visit a job site when he was in the 1st grade and after that experience, he knew that he wanted to work in construction. “I was very blessed to know where I wanted to be and what I wanted to do from the very beginning,” says Rob.
“I always knew that I wanted to grow the company much larger,” he shares. In order to do that, after graduating from college, Rob worked at a bigger firm to gain experience and bring something new to the table. “I came back to the business about seven years ago and I took over the role of CEO four years ago. We’ve almost doubled in size and have tripled in capacity as far as how many projects we can work on at once,” he shares.
“One of our core values is that we’re a faith-based company. You can find that on our website, it’s not something we hide behind and we’re very proud of it. We also treat people the way we want to be treated.” Rob is a firm believer in listening to hear and understand what people are saying. “When talking with clients, listen to what they have to say. We make sure we understand what they’re asking for so
that we can give them exactly what they want. For our clients, it’s not just another project to them, it is the project. We don’t breeze over something because we do it every day, we slow down enough to make the owner feel comfortable and make sure they feel heard.”
Rob is the Chair for the Columbia County Government Affairs Committee, on the Board of Directors for the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, and on the Construction Advisory Board, along with a group called the Coalition for Better Government. “That is my attempt to try and do more, engage more, and make sure I understood what was happening on a regular and direct basis. We’re making sure that as this community grows, my kids have the same benefits that I had growing up. I love Columbia County, this is an amazing place to live, an amazing place to raise a family, and was an amazing place to be raised. I have two young kids and I want them to see Columbia County as a place they want to come back to and raise their family,” he shares.
Prioritizing family time is very important to the Cliftons. They love attending Journey Community Church together and participating in local events like the Evans Market and Food Truck Fridays. When Rob was a kid, his dad raced a Datsun 240z, and they now continue that hobby together. “My dad and I race cars and the kids just love coming to the race track with us.”

Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.
02.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
03.
Practice your short game every day.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
