Inspired by Style, Rooted in Community

There’s something captivating about the way true style reveals itself, not in fleeting trends, but in the lasting impact of thoughtful design, personal expression and a well-curated life. This month, we’re celebrating style in all its forms: what we wear, how we live and the spaces we create.

In this issue, we spotlight local businesses that bring style to life in meaningful, tangible ways. At the forefront is Soul + Muse, where fashion is more than fabric, it’s confidence branded into every carefully handcrafted piece.

Our homes are powerful reflections of personal style. Few things transform a space more dramatically than a fresh coat of paint. Whether it’s a bold accent wall or a timeless neutral palette, the experts at CertaPro Painters of Omaha know how to bring color and character to every room. This month, they offer expert advice to transforming your home, one space at a time.

And if the kitchen is the heart of the home, then Signature Cabinet Studio is the artisan behind the heartbeat. Their custom cabinetry combines craftsmanship and innovation, and goes far beyond the kitchen.

Finally, style doesn’t stop at the back door. Ground Builders is reshaping outdoor living in the most stunning ways. Imagine striking water features, welcoming fire elements and outdoor entertaining spaces that flow as effortlessly as the interiors. Their work reminds us that great style starts at the curb and continues through every inch of our lives.

We hope this issue inspires you to embrace your own style boldly, unapologetically, and beautifully.

SOUL + MUSE

Writing Stories One Thread at a Time

PHOTOGRAPHY

To walk into Soul + Muse is to step into a carefully curated, beautiful world. Surrounded by thriving ferns and blooming plants, it’s easy to feel transported to a place where not only custom hats but also meaningful stories take shape.

Skye Mielke is the founder, owner and creative force behind the shop. The daughter of an artist and a musician, Mielke grew up immersed in creativity, nurtured especially by her grandmother Fran, an art instructor. That early encouragement shaped her path. Her journey is a powerful example of a life led by intuition, courage and grit.

THE ROOTS OF CREATIVITY

Born and raised in Omaha, Mielke grew up surrounded by creative energy. Her father was a musician, and both her mother and grandmother were artists. Her grandmother introduced her to the world of paint, charcoal and imagination early on.

“She was the person I was closest to growing up,” Mielke says, crediting her grandmother for her lifelong love of creative expression.

Skye of Soul + Muse sits surrounded by stories, each hat custom made with heart.
Soul + Muse offers custom hats crafted with unique details to express personality.

After high school, Mielke enrolled at University of Nebraska at Omaha to pursue a degree in marketing, but two years in, she knew it wasn’t her path. “That just wasn’t a part of my life journey,” she says.

Over the next few years, Mielke explored different interests, met her husband and became a mother. After her first child was born, she knew something had shifted. “I just didn’t want to work for anyone anymore. I wanted to make my own hours,” she says.

That shift led her to hair extension and color artistry. Mielke earned her certification, and in 2019, just before the pandemic, she opened Soul + Muse.

A CREATIVE HUB IN ELKHORN

Despite the challenges of COVID-19, Soul + Muse not only endured but began to thrive. The space is warm and inviting, with a mix of greenery, black-and-white decor and natural wood accents. It feels like an escape.

“I think it’s like the universal joke that a stylist’s chair is like a therapist’s chair,” Mielke says. “You get to hear people’s stories and connect with people.” That connection became the foundation for what would grow into both a salon and a boutique.

Her love for fashion and decor emerged slowly, starting with a few hand-poured candles and curated clothing pieces. That creative

“My biggest growth moments have always been when I’m sitting in the uncomfortable, I fully embrace the feeling. If I feel like I want to get sick, then I know I’m supposed to do that thing. It’s the best navigating tool.”

itch evolved into a thoughtfully stocked retail space featuring oneof-a-kind finds, including her now-signature custom hats.

“I had been watching the hat trend grow in other places, but nothing was really here yet,” Mielke says. “The history of a felt or straw hat, not only from the ranching side but throughout history, really drew me in.”

Soul + Muse now sells hats for all personalities, from western bowlers to felt fedoras. Each one is sourced from shops across the country and shaped in-house to fit the wearer. Feathers, brands, stitching and other custom elements allow customers to make their hat entirely their own.

Helping people discover a new form of self-expression has brought Mielke joy, but restoring heirlooms has also struck a chord. “Once we started doing hats, so many people said, ‘I have my grandfather’s hat and I just need it cleaned and reshaped so I can wear it.’ That’s when I realized this is everything I’m about,” she says. “Helping people connect with their own stories.”

PHILOSOPHY AND VISION

Mielke is quick to credit her personal philosophy for Soul + Muse’s success: follow what feels right, even when it’s hard.

“My biggest growth moments have always been when I’m sitting in the uncomfortable,” she says. “I fully embrace the feeling. If I feel like I want to get sick, then I know I’m supposed to do that thing. It’s the best navigating tool.”

Two years after opening, the original shop was bursting at the seams. Mielke signed a lease in the heart of Elkhorn, where Soul + Muse now hosts regular weekend events and operates Monday through Thursday. She continues to collaborate with local florists, artists and other small vendors.

But more than anything, Mielke remains focused on building relationships. “Whenever people come in, it’s never just about grabbing something. There’s always a story behind it,” she says. “I love building those connections and seeing customers turned friends, turned family, return.”

With life as her inspiration and her heart as her guide, Skye Mielke has created more than just a storefront. She has built a space where stories are written every day through hats, conversations and personal connections. Soul + Muse is a place where creativity and intention meet, and where a grandmother’s influence lives on in every chapter.

Ground Builders Landscaping

CREATING OUTDOOR SPACES AND STRONGER CONNECTIONS

Ground Builders owners Jason and Hannah Porto, pictured with their children, at their brand-new showroom in Waterloo.

“We’re going to keep building spaces where people can gather, connect and enjoy life together.”

Stepping onto a property designed and curated by the team at Ground Builders Landscaping Co. feels like entering a little piece of heaven. Flower beds are intricately manicured and filled with eye-catching blooms and greenery. Hand-laid Unilock paver walkways invite you to unwind beneath a custom pergola, while a spacious patio is designed to host both intimate family gatherings and lively celebrations. Every detail reflects the company’s mission: With Ground Builders Landscaping Co., you will live better outdoors.

Jason Porto, CEO and founder, leads this passionate and collaborative team. A visionary who turned a college landscaping venture into a thriving Omaha-based company, Porto has always been drawn to big dreams and creative pursuits. Embracing challenges and possibilities, he has built a relationship-focused team that transforms outdoor spaces across the Omaha metro into beautiful, meaningful places to gather and grow.

THE ROOTS OF A DREAMER

Born in Lincoln and raised in Omaha, Porto always had a knack for dreaming big and often felt out of place in a traditional school setting.

“I wasn’t the greatest student. I was unfocused. But I was always thinking of ideas and dreaming,” he says. “I enjoyed quiet time, and I loved imagining whatever outcome I wanted.”

While pursuing a degree in construction management at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2009, Porto launched Ground Builders Landscaping Co. as a side hustle, focusing on lawn care and simple landscaping. “I was living at my parents’ house and operating the business right out of their driveway,” he said, laughing.

It wasn’t long before the business gained traction. By 2011, Porto made the decision to pursue his dream full time.

BUILDING A LANDSCAPING POWERHOUSE IN OMAHA

What began as basic lawn care quickly evolved into designing complex outdoor living spaces, including

patios, pergolas and water features, with a focus on bringing each client’s vision to life.

“There aren’t many challenges I shy away from,” Porto says. “I enjoy learning new things and solving our way through a problem.”

Whenever a client requested something he hadn’t done before, Porto welcomed the opportunity. His openness to learning and innovation fueled the company’s evolution.

As project complexity increased, so did the need for a larger team. Ground Builders now employs skilled designers, project managers, mechanics, landscapers, carpenters and administrators. Every client receives one-on-one attention, ensuring their space reflects their needs and vision. Designers tailor each concept, carpenters construct custom features, and mechanics maintain equipment to keep projects on schedule. Behind the scenes, administrators keep operations running smoothly.

ABOVE AND BEYOND SERVICE

A standout feature of Ground Builders Landscaping Co. is its commitment to long-term service. Beyond designing and building dream spaces, the company also helps clients maintain them.

“We offer packages that include anything from pressure washing patios to maintaining water features and everything in between,” Porto says. “We want clients to enjoy turnkey outdoor spaces without the hassle of upkeep.”

Ground Builders is also an authorized dealer of StruXure Pergola X Systems, an advanced line of aluminum louvered pergolas with motorized screens. These systems enhance outdoor living by providing protection from rain and sun, allowing year-round use.

“It really transforms the space,” Porto says. “You’re less impacted by weather, and you can enjoy the outdoors more comfortably.”

ROOTED IN RELATIONSHIPS

At its core, Ground Builders is about more than landscaping. For Porto, the business is built on relationships.

I’m all about finding people and growing together. I believe most situations can be win-win. “ ”
Under a custom StruXure Pergola X, this outdoor space by Ground Builders invites year-round connection, rain or shine.

“I’m all about finding people and growing together. I believe most situations can be win-win,” he says.

That spirit of collaboration is evident across every level of the company. Vendors trust the reliability of the Ground Builders team. Employees know they are valued beyond their output. Clients can feel confident that the crew at their homes or businesses care deeply about their work and the people they serve.

The company’s latest milestone is a move into a brand-new 24,000-square-foot facility on eight acres in Waterloo, complete with an outdoor showroom, presentation room and training center.

“It’s our dream shop,” Porto says. “We’re excited for what’s ahead.”

NEXT CHAPTER, SAME VISION

From humble beginnings in a driveway to a respected name in Omaha landscaping, Ground Builders Landscaping Co. has stayed true to its mission: helping people live better outdoors. With Unilock, ICPI, and NCMA certifications, a dedicated team, and a new facility ready to inspire, the future is bright.

“I’m super proud of our team,” Porto says, smiling. “We’re going to keep building spaces where people can gather, connect and enjoy life together.”

Signature Cabinet Studio Brings Full-Service

Design to Every Corner of the Home

The team at Signature Cabinet Studio wants you to know they’re more than a cabinet studio. In fact, they offer a lot more than the company name suggests.

Located in Fremont, just a quick drive from Elkhorn, Signature Cabinet Studio began with a love for assembling a dream from the ground up. Owner Dave Boltinghouse, used his long experience as a builder to establish Signature Cabinet Studio as a semi-custom cabinet company nearly a decade ago, but design services soon followed. Today, the

staff of three is small but mighty, serving clients all over the Metro area with a wide variety of needs.

For Signature Cabinet Studio, a standard kitchen remodel is all in a day’s work, but it doesn’t stop there. They boast a lengthy list of offerings, including bathrooms, mudrooms, closets and even entertainment centers. Don’t need just cabinets? They can help with it all, from top to bottom. Signature Cabinet Studio partners with several cabinetry lines in order to provide a broad array of options at every price point, plus several other vendors to complete the client’s appliance, flooring, light and paint needs.

Speaking to Kelly Vanek, Signature Cabinet Studio’s office manager and resident jack-of-alltrades, there’s no limit to what what they can do. “People, a lot of times, think kitchens, but we can do bathrooms, laundry rooms, bedrooms. There’s a long list!”

The company’s designers, Valarie Maes and Hailey Leuser, are new to the team but not short on knowledge of their industry. Signature Cabinet Studio’s design specialists stay with you

throughout the entire process, from the initial consultation to the final installation. Maes and Leuser bring a fresh and vibrant energy to the group, with each of them testifying that the welcoming environment carries from the office to their interactions with the clients. “I really like the environment, and I love how it goes more in depth with cabinetry. Just the people you work with is honestly amazing,” Maes shares.

The nature of their industry also creates ample opportunities for them to hone their craft. “My favorite aspect about working at Signature is how I get to learn about cabinetry; there is so much to learn,“ Leuser says.

Both boast degrees in interior design and keep a pulse on recent trends, eagerly looking for what may entice their clients in the future. Maes shares the client requests currently are “Simple, modern, cabinets and white countertops with some hints of gray. But some are doing country style.” Leuser agrees, noting, “I feel like we’re going to be seeing a lot more natural wood coming back. Just like clothing, cabinet trends come and go!”

“I like the environment, and how it goes more in depth with cabinetry.”

A recent endeavor of linking arms with local homebuilders is the realization of a dream they’ve long held. They hope it only grows, with the ultimate goal being to work with builders on the entire design project, helping to make a client’s dream become a reality. “We enjoy the personal side of design,” Vanek says. Ready to get started on transforming your space? Signature Cabinet Studio is hosting an open house event this

fall, supplying the perfect jumping off point. Prospective clients will have the chance to meet the new designers, view the options and wander around the substantial showroom. To get more details on the upcoming event, visit Signature Cabinet Studio’s pages on both Facebook or Instagram.

If you’re interested in meeting with a designer or want to discuss Signature Cabinet Studio’s offerings, visit www.signaturecabinet.studio.

Effortless Impact

Expert tips from CertaPro Painters of Omaha for high-impact, easy updates

Painting is one of the fastest, most cost-effective ways to refresh a space, yet the difference between “looks fine” and “wow” usually comes down to planning. We teamed up with the pros at CertaPro Painters of Omaha to break the process into four smart moves that scale from a weekend accent wall to a whole-home makeover.

Prep for Success  One Two

Prep typically accounts for most of a professional paint job, and for good reason. Clean surfaces so paint can adhere; patch, sand and prime repairs; protect floors and furnishings; remove or mask hardware; and address moisture or peeling issues outdoors. Proper prep extends finish life and ensures your new color looks like the chip you chose.

Pick Your Palette with Confidence

Color is mood, light and architecture working together. Start by gathering your favorite textiles, art, or existing finishes. Narrow to a main neutral that carries through halls and open areas, then choose one to three accent colors for feature rooms, built-ins, or the front door. Always test swatches and view them at different times of day. If you’re stuck, a professional color consult can save time and prevent costly redo’s.

READY TO ENLIST THE HELP OF THE PROFESSIONALS?

Not ready to tackle a DIY project? Schedule a color consult or estimate, gather swatches and tackle one zone this month.

Even a single freshly painted room can change how you live in your home. Visit certapro.com/Omaha to get started.

Three Four

Finish, Inspect & Protect Your Investment

Plan for two finish coats in most situations; follow suggested dry times; and use the right sheen for durability - eggshell or satin in active rooms; semi-gloss on trim. When the last coat dries, walk through in strong light, mark touch-ups with low-tack tape to return to later. Record brand, color name/ code, sheen and date so future touch-ups blend seamlessly.

Paint High-Impact Zones First

Want maximum transformation on a manageable budget? Hit spaces everyone sees: main living areas, the kitchen and your exterior entry for curb appeal.  According to Jodi Esser, owner of CertaPro Omaha, “Painting kitchen cabinets is a cost-effective way to totally transform your kitchen in less than a week.”  Layering these upgrades over time lets you refresh without overcommitting.

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET

Everyone dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get our time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying these guidelines will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

FACE CLOTHES THE SAME DIRECTION

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

8 WAYS TO ORGANIZE AND INJECT STYLE INTO YOUR SPACE
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS | PHOTOGRAPHY
BY CASSANDRA CASTANEDA

USE REAL ESTATE WISELY

Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. A large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

NEGATIVE SPACE

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

HIDDEN STORAGE

Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-toceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for out-of-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

UPGRADED HANGERS

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner!

BAG & SHOE STORAGE

Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions.

Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.

MAKE A STATEMENT

Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.

OLD WALL, NEW TRICKS

HANG UP THE OLD WAY AND TRY A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM IN YOUR HOME.

One of my happy places is sitting in front of a museum wall gallery. I can admire art for hours, and if I’m with a friend, there’s no telling how long we’ll sit, reflect, and share our individual perspectives. If you’ve admired gallery wall displays in magazines, catalogs, or on social media and would like to create one in your home, it’s much easier than you might think.

DESIGNING YOUR GALLERY WALL

The first step in creating a gallery wall is planning. Start by selecting a theme or color scheme that complements your space. Themes can be as varied as black-and-white photographs, abstract paintings, or a mix of personal and artistic prints.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED:

• A gallery wall hanging system, which typically includes mounting rails, cables or rods, and hooks. You can find them pretty much anywhere, online or at your local home improvement store.

• A collection of frames and artwork.

• A level, measuring tape, and perhaps a laser pointer for precision.

CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS

The arrangement of your gallery wall can follow several patterns, depending on your taste:

• Linear: Artworks are hung in a straight line at eye level, creating a clean and orderly appearance.

• Grid: Perfect for a collection of similarly sized frames, this layout emphasizes structure and uniformity.

• Salon Style: This more traditional arrangement involves layering pieces closely together, often extending across the wall. It’s ideal for creating a rich, filled look.

INSTALLATION TIPS:

01 MEASURE YOUR SPACE:

Carefully measure the wall space where you want to install the gallery. Consider the height and width available, keeping in mind furniture and other room features.

02 LAY IT OUT:

Arrange your artwork on the floor to finalize your layout. This “dry run” is crucial to get a feel for how the pieces will interact with one another. I like to use painter’s tape to create a visual of what my display will look like on the walls.

03 INSTALL THE RAILS AND HANG YOUR ART:

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mount the rails at the top of your wall. Ensure they are level and securely attached. Attach cables or rods to the rails, then use hooks to hang your frames. The beauty of the system is that you can adjust the height and position easily.

04 BALANCE AND SYMMETRY:

Step back to view your layout from different angles. Adjust the spacing and alignment as needed to achieve visual balance.
