Nebraska StrongMore Than a Catchphrase

Nebraska Strong.  Two simple words that, over the last 10 years, have become a common catchphrase in our heartland communities. What began as a makeshift state motto after the tragic floods of 2019, took on renewed meaning one fateful afternoon in April 2024.

Nebraska Strong. On April 26, 2024, the skies darkened, and what unfolded would forever change the landscape of the Elkhorn, Omaha, Waterloo, Bennington and Blair communities. But as Nebraskans do, we showed up — by the thousands — to offer support in the form of labor, food, clothing, shelter, money, and ultimately, love. For weeks, business as usual was anything but.

Nebraska Strong. Landscape trucks that should have been filled with rock and mulch for spring projects were pulled off job sites and rerouted to disaster zones. Businesses, churches and schools turned out volunteers to help in any way necessary. Because that’s what we do. That’s who we are. Despite our differences, when things get tough, we show up. What matters is helping our neighbors, rebuilding our communities and holding each other up in the midst of devastating loss.

While the cold winter months bite at our skin and leave us silently asking, "Why do I live here?" these moments in time solidify the answer. Because there really is no place quite like Nebraska. No people quite like Nebraskans. No love for community quite like you'll find here.

April is our investment issue, and we want to use it to highlight businesses, partners and ways you can personally invest in yourself. But we would be remiss if we didn’t also take the opportunity to focus on our community members and all the ways you invest back in each other.

The fact is, "we all stick together, in all kinds of weather."

So this issue is for you, our community. Thank you for showing up and for always being Nebraska Strong.

A LOOK BACK AT THE 2024 ARBOR DAY TORNADO

Nebraska Strong

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RELEVANT CHURCH, LOVE CHURCH, JACOB MICHALSKI AND SARA ALEXANDER

ARTICLE BY NICHOLE PERINGER, STEPHANIE LEWIS AND CHRISTINA KOCH
Damage at Sycamore Farms, home of Junkstock
“Glass shattered, and you could literally feel the air being sucked out of the house.”

What started as a peaceful spring day in the West Omaha suburbs ended in stark contrast. Just as schools began to dismiss for the day and children made their way home, the foreboding sound of tornado sirens pierced the darkening skies. Parents scrambled to collect their children, while many schools had students shelter in place. What unfolded over the next hour would forever change the landscape of the community.

The storm, which left a 31-mile path of destruction, tracked through southwest Douglas County, through Waterloo, Elkhorn, Bennington and north to the south side of Blair before dissipating. Wind speeds clocked at 170 mph, rating the storm an EF-4 tornado.

Stories of loss flooded in—devastation, destruction—but miraculously, no loss of life. Amid the destruction, stories of resilience, service, and unwavering community spirit emerged, powerfully reflecting the heart of Nebraska.

Elkhorn resident Ashley Teepell’s voice trembled as she recalled the day that forever changed her family’s life. “I saw the funnel… it kept getting bigger,” she said, describing the chaos that drove her, her husband, and their three small children into a stairwell closet, huddling under a crib mattress. Glass shattered, and “you could literally feel the air being sucked out of the house.” Teepell recalled.

Not far from where Teepell’s family sheltered, the storm leveled Rocky’s Stone + Design—just two years after owner, Jacob Michalski bought the business and started building his dream.

“Everything I’d worked so hard for was crumbled in front of me,” Michalski said. Off-site during the storm, he rushed over after receiving a call from supervisor Keith Fobert, who reported the devastation. Together, they began to unearth loaders from the rubble.

Just west of Elkhorn at Sycamore Farms, home of the beloved semiannual Junkstock festival, the farm took a direct hit just days before the festival was set to kick off. In a stroke of luck, the festival had pushed its opening weekend back for the first time ever, preventing what would have been hundreds of festivalgoers from being caught in the storm.

Sara Alexander, founder of Junkstock, said, “It was devastating to see our 123-year-old farm torn apart. Historic trees are gone and nostalgic pieces of the festival were destroyed.”

NEIGHBORS UNITED

As the tornado tore into the neighborhood across from his workplace and church, Cory Nelson, director of impact ministries at Relevant Community Church, sat in his living room watching the news. He knew the need would be great. After a phone call with partners from Omaha Rapid Response, he arrived that Friday night at Relevant Community Church to assess the damage and get to work.

Nelson described the overwhelming community efforts. Partnering with Omaha Rapid Response, he noted that “close to a thousand responses” came in via digital volunteer forms overnight. By Saturday, more than 2,000 volunteers arrived on-site with equipment, ready to assist.

That Friday afternoon, Shannon Mauser-Suing, mission coordinator for Bethany Lutheran Church, watched from her home as tornadoes ravaged Elkhorn and the surrounding areas.

“It was shocking how long they lasted,” she said. Initially unsure of Bethany’s role, she and the church community mobilized after Hot Meals USA called, offering to serve. “We had the space. We had the resources,” she said. With help from St. Patrick’s Parish and local businesses, Bethany Lutheran fed families for weeks.

We were all pulling together. We all had the same rope, and were all pulling the same weight. “ ”

A COMMUNITY STRENGTHENED

“It made me really appreciate the community we live in,” Nelson said, reflecting on the outpouring of support. Relevant Community Church served as a command center for a week before transitioning efforts to COPE and other organizations. “I feel like our community is better after this tornado,” he said.

St. Patrick’s Parish helped coordinate volunteers by leveraging a pre-existing online form developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, which became an invaluable data collection tool. Flyers with QR codes assured residents the help they needed was available.

More than 250 parishioners mobilized within days, forming a case management team that assisted neighbors with needs ranging from housing to clothing—even delivering an air fryer to a woman who had lost everything and longed for a small comfort.

For Mauser-Suing, a highlight was creating a safe space for those in need.

“Guards dropped,” she said, as people connected. She reflected on the partnership between Bethany Lutheran, other organizations and community members working together to support their neighbors.

“I would stand in the middle of it and think, I can feel this heartbeat that doesn’t exist anywhere else. And when I look back, we were all pulling together. No one was pulling in a different direction. We all had the same rope, and we were all pulling the same weight.”

THE SPIRIT OF ELKHORN

Michalski was overwhelmed by the support he received the day after the tornado demolished his stone yard. More than 100 volunteers arrived to help clear debris. Despite setbacks, including looting, fuel

spills and flooding, he relocated to 192nd and Q streets and opened a retail store. “Everyone was so supportive, wanting to help us,” he said. “Through it all, I believe God had a bigger plan, and where I am now is exactly where He wants me to be.”

Faced with the possibility of having to cancel or postpone Junkstock, Alexander said, “In true Nebraska fashion, we had so many people show up, many of whom we’d never met. They showed up and wrapped their arms around us and set us back on our feet.”

Junkstock went off as planned the following weekend, thanks to the support of neighbors, coaches, teachers and athletes from local schools who came out and worked tirelessly to clear the farm, ensuring it was safe and ready to welcome festival-goers with what would be some much-needed joy.

“The tornado made Elkhorn stronger, or maybe better,” Teepell said. “Everybody was going through it together.” After nine months in a rental with their golden retriever, the Teepell family is finally back home.

Community support—gift cards, clothes, and the kindness of strangers—transformed her. “The tornado is one of the best things that happened to me,” she admitted. “God used it to radically transform my heart.”

Elkhorn’s resilience shines through the wreckage of that fateful day. It is a city united in strength and compassion. From volunteers clearing debris to neighbors donating clothes, stories like Michalski’s rebuilt business, Alexander’s farm and festival forging ahead and Teepell’s transformed family, highlight what makes Elkhorn special.

“The blessings were way too many to comprehend,” Michalski said, reflecting a shared sentiment.

Recovery continues today as nonprofits such as COPE address insurance delays and rebuilding efforts. But community organizations, churches, nonprofits, and neighbors aren’t just rebuilding houses—they’re restoring homes and families.

“I’m just happy to be home,” Teepell said—a reminder that from devastation, a stronger city emerges.

THINK BOULDER WITH Rocky's Stone + Design

INVEST IN CREATING YOUR VISION FOR OUTDOOR LIVING

Jacob Michalski, president of Rocky’s Stone + Design, takes pride in building relationships. In fact, his business started with a conversation with a family friend.

“My brother and I were building a retaining wall in our parents’ backyard as a Father’s Day gift,” Michalski said. “I needed help sourcing stone, so I reached out to a friend who owned Carson Stone & Supply. I joked that if he ever wanted to sell, he should let me know. Turns out, he was ready. Suddenly, at 21 years old, I was talking to multiple banks trying to get a loan.”

Michalski’s perseverance ultimately secured the financing he needed to purchase Carson Stone & Supply, renaming it Rocky’s Stone + Design after his loyal and courageous dog—traits he embodies both personally and professionally.

Running a stone yard wasn’t entirely new to Michalski. In high school, he and

his brother started a lawn and landscaping company, and he also pursued a business degree in college.

Despite his background, Michalski wanted to learn as much as possible about stone.

“I’m a hands-on learner, so I relied immediately on the three employees who were already in the business,” he said. “My first year, I drove to as many contractor customers as possible and asked them questions about what they needed to succeed and what products they liked to use. It helped a lot to go to the people who were buying from me.”

Michalski’s focus on relationships has helped Rocky’s Stone + Design stand out as a provider of unique landscaping stone and products.

“We offer all the typical landscaping items, but I really like to have cool stone products you don’t find in Omaha,” Michalski said. “We’re bringing in this Fond du Lac flagstone that’s a very pretty white. We have a lot of new ground covers, as well, including different colors, like a shiny black and a new one called Arctic Winter that’s a sparkly white with a purple hue.”

For those who prefer a DIY approach to landscaping, Michalski and his team can take measurements, specify stone amounts and provide instructions for ground preparation.

“If a homeowner wanted to put in a bubbler, for example, we will tell them how to dig for the bubbler, where to get the accessories, and we’ll provide and deliver the stone,” Michalski said. “If everything is ready when we deliver, we will place the stone, too.”

Last spring’s EF4 tornado that tore through Elkhorn leveled Michalski’s Maple Street building, leaving the stone yard and business equipment buried under rubble and fallen trees.

“I love seeing my stone all over Omaha, but it’s most important to me that we build relationships over transactions .”

In addition to offering distinctive products, Michalski and his team relish creating custom stone pieces, hand-carving rocks into one-of-akind fire pits and coring them for water features. Recently, they constructed a smaller version of the illuminated water fountain featured at Fountain Ridge Office Park at 192nd Street and West Dodge Road.

The challenges that followed the tornado led Michalski to relocate to a larger space at 5240 S. 192nd St. The new site not only provides the space Rocky’s Stone + Design needs to continue expanding and offering unique landscaping products, but it also includes a building where Michalski now operates a retail store open to the public.

“My favorite part of this business is being able to work with so many unique customers and projects,” Michalski said. “I love seeing my stone all over Omaha, at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and Lauritzen Gardens, but it’s most important to me that we build relationships over transactions. I want everyone to feel welcomed and heard, and I want to give the best experience possible to ensure our customers keep coming back.”

MoveRX Physical Therapy

Speaking with Devan Sedlacek,  PT, DPT, owner of MoveRX Physical Therapy, for any length of time quickly reveals her passion for patient care. Caring for people and setting them on a better path forward has always been her goal.

“I love the idea of helping people stay strong for life and showing them there’s a way to either reduce their risk of injury or work around it,” Sedlacek said.

It’s a sentiment rooted in her formative years. Born and raised in Omaha, Sedlacek was a smaller child growing up. Driven to gain and improve her strength, she eventually found her way to CrossFit and competitive powerlifting.

Reflecting on her childhood and health journey, Sedlacek said, “I think that subconsciously played a role in why I pursued what I did. I was always seeking knowledge on how to exercise and be strong.”

That same dedication led her to earn a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and exercise science from the University of NebraskaLincoln. Sedlacek then earned a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Before long, MoveRX Physical Therapy was born.

From the start, Sedlacek envisioned a model beyond traditional physical therapy.

An Investment in Strength for Life

Dry needling is a treatment that allows for the targeting of a specific area to relieve pain and increase range of motion.

“Our traditional health care system is designed to treat sickness. When someone goes to physical therapy in the traditional system, we’re getting them from the sickness point to good enough. I want to help someone get better than they were, even before their injury,” she said.

Partnership is at the core of MoveRX.

Fostering relationships with local gyms and personal trainers is a natural extension of its approach, ensuring each individual receives personalized care from start to finish. Its fitness-forward platform is designed to keep patients moving and reduce pain, with virtual sessions also available.

MoveRX emphasizes rebuilding and resilience, offering personalized programs tailored to each client’s goals.  When discussing the diversity of her patients, each with unique needs and goals, Sedlacek’s voice lit up.

“I have a patient in her 80s right now! Age is really not a deterrent to us being able to stay strong,” she said. “I tell people it’s like putting money in the stock market—if you’re investing in your health, it’s just like investing in the stock market. You’re going to be so thankful you did. And the earlier, the better.” She quickly added, “Never too late, either. Everyone’s an athlete. We all want to be active. We all want quality of life for as long as possible. And that’s where my wheelhouse is.”

Today, MoveRX has three locations in the Omaha area and two physical therapists, including Shane Lentz, PT, DPT. Lentz, a former sprinter himself, specializes in working with those who want to focus on speed and athleticism. He believes “It’s important for us to be able to move quickly, no matter our age. It helps us prevent falls and maintain tendon and joint health as we age.”

Sedlacek clearly adores the community she works in and sees nothing but growth ahead. “Omaha is an amazing city and the people here are equally amazing. This community is really what has made my business thrive,” she said.

AXNT Insurance Stands Out

JR Rivera’s story feels like a sunny San Diego day—bright, energetic and full of possibility. Sitting down with him, you can’t help but catch the spark of his entrepreneurial spirit, a flame ignited long ago by his parents.

“My first sales job was at age eight, selling bread door to door in West Point, Nebraska,” he said with a laugh, recalling how his mom peddled popsicles and tamales while his dad sold hot dogs and tacos. That hustle stuck with him, shaping a man who thrives on building something from scratch.

After serving in the military at 29 Palms— “not as tropical as it sounds,” he noted with a smile—and studying in San Diego, Rivera returned to Nebraska with a hunger to build something both meaningful and all his own.

“I’ve always had that spirit of entrepreneurship,” he said, envisioning a team and culture that feel like home. Insurance wasn’t the exciting career he originally pictured—“No kid says, ‘I want to sell policies!’”—but it clicked. “It’s an essential part of people buying their first home, their biggest asset,” he explained, his voice warming as he described helping clients through life’s milestones.

Rivera’s path wasn’t a straight shot. He switched majors from entrepreneurship to real estate, graduating in 2016 under the GI Bill, thanks to his Marine Corps service. Leading more than 50 Marines at the age of 19 taught him leadership and people skills he now channels into business. After years at State Farm, he teamed up with a friend in 2019 to blend insurance with real estate partnerships, learning the ropes in Nebraska and Arizona. Then, in 2024, he took the leap, launching AXNT Insurance—a name that reflects his goal to “emphasize the difference” in the service the company provides. In an industry that can often feel unexciting, AXNT stands out and steps up.

What sets AXNT apart? As an independent agency, Rivera’s team shops for clients, offering tailored options from 16 companies.

“We’re middlemen who do the work for you,” he said, focusing on

JR RIvera, founder of AXNT Insurance

eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Supporting clients through claims— like last year’s storm chaos—was challenging, seeing so many people he cared about struggle. But he’s grateful he could be there when they needed him most.

“Having somebody there in those terrifying times makes a difference,” he said, his tone earnest.

Rivera lights up when talking about his team. “They make me feel young,” he said with a grin, describing an office buzzing with music and dance

moves before coffee even kicks in. Building a crew with “that salsa inside”—a fire he credits for keeping work vibrant and dynamic.

Beyond insurance, Rivera’s new podcast, Mindset 52 , spotlights high achievers balancing work and life—a passion project that mirrors his own drive. Reflecting on AXNT’s 2024 wins and 2025 goals, he’s all optimism.

“High energy feeds energy,” he said—and you believe him. Rivera’s not just shopping policies or insuring homes; he’s building a community, one heartfelt connection at a time.
