Let's Make the Most of Summer

We all know that our precious summer season is short. Weather and time commitment permitting, it can become even shorter!

In this issue, we took a bit from a few businesses where you can branch out and explore. We spoke with Elizabeth Watters at the Westin Galleria. They have several events during the year ranging from “Summer House” to their “Winter Village.” If you want a family staycation in your own backyard, this might be a simple and easy weekend to plan.

If you have not visited Northland Visions, it’s a fabulous local destination and shopping excursion where one can get lost browsing in art, food, gifts, jewelry and more. Owner Greg Bellanger shares a bit about their history and where their beautiful gallery pieces come from.

Curious about exploring a new smile? From the health angle, Anderson Dental shares about a new generation of orthodontics. With all the buzz around Invisalign and how easy it is to straighten your teeth compared to years past, we covered the most commonly asked questions about this popular technology for your oral health.

Road tripping in the summer is oftentimes on the bucket list. To make sure your tires are ready for the road, Samaritan Tire shares tips on how prep for the miles ahead. Exploring doesn’t even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail, seeing a new genre of movie, diving into a book, or going out to find a fun cookie or ice cream place in town. It could even be as simple as striking up a conversation with a new acquaintance.

We hope you can prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life this summer, and to lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To plan that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar.

Happy 4th of July and enjoy summer exploring!

EXPERIENCE BEST-IN-CLASS SERVICE AND UNIQUE ACTIVITIES

The centrally-located Westin Edina Galleria is a great destination for out-of-towners searching for an upscale hotel experience and for locals looking to book a staycation. “One thing that the Westin Edina Galleria focuses on is being the gathering place for both the local community, and for sophisticated travelers, so we try to offer unique experiences that are different from a standard hotel experience,” says marketing manager, Elizabeth Watters.

There are a number of ways the hotel does this. Its lobby bar, Prelude, starts off as a relaxing breakfast spot serving coffee, pastries and other grab-and-go items, but at night, it opens to a full-service lively bar with an incredible list of spirits, wines, and signature cocktails. “We also have live music from local legends on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights," she says.

The indoor heated saltwater pool is a hidden gem, and there’s a full fitness center too. “We partner with Peloton and TRX, so we have some of those staples for anybody who’s fitness-minded. Our club lounge is also available to that certain level of Marriott Envoy guests, or people can purchase it to upgrade their stay.”

Since the hotel is connected to the Galleria Mall – which has an underground walkway so guests can avoid the cold weather during wintertime – there are plenty of shopping and dining options. The Southdale Mall is also across the street, and just down the road is 50th and France, where high-end stores and dining options can be found in abundance.

“The hotel is also close to the lakes and other popular destinations such as the Mall of America,” says Elizabeth. “For out-of-towners, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport is less than 10 miles away, and complimentary parking makes it super easy when they arrive.”

Being centrally located also means convenience for guests who may be attending a wedding or other celebration at the hotel, which hosts many events, both small and large, throughout the year. In addition to various-sized meeting rooms, there are two ballrooms that allow the hotel to host parties with as many as 300 people.

“Our banquet team has been here for many years and offers very attentive and personalized service,” she says. “All of the banquet and catering food is prepared by McCormick & Schmick’s, so it's an elevated experience.”

The Westin Edina Galleria is also an enjoyable destination for both guests and locals due to its creative and unique experiences.

“From December to February, we have Winter Village, which is inspired by a winter ski village in the Swiss Alps,” says Elizabeth. “We completely transform the lobby check-in area and bar, and then in our courtyard, there’s the chalet, where people can experience various dining options such as signature cheeses and chocolate fondue.”

In March, the upscale lobby turns into a botanical extravaganza. “We partner with the Galleria when they do their flower show with Bachman's, and in addition to the big lobby display, we do a botanical cocktail menu at Prelude that rotates every year with different cocktails.”

In the warmer months, people can take part in Summer House. “It’s a nautical-themed getaway where you trade the beach for the lake and experience coastal American foods, summertime cocktails, and fun events like movies on the lawn and Clicquot and Claws,” she says. “By doing this, we’re promoting the Land of 10,000 Lakes as a destination, while also elevating it a little bit to align with our brand.”

Edina Weekend Wonders is another exclusive offering. “These are customized experiences that we promote as a way for travelers to experience the best that Minneapolis and Minnesota has to offer. Our team handles the booking process, which makes it a seamless process for our guests.” Some of these Weekend Wonders include a tour of Paisley Park (Prince’s former home and studio), personalized styling experience, Prelude Reserve Collection testing, an arboretum tour and hot air balloon rides over the river. For kids, the curated indoor camping experience or s’mores by the bonfire are always a popular treat.

The rooms themselves are modern and relaxing with lots of gray and a hint of navy tones. When it’s time to call it a night, fall asleep in one of their signature Westin Heavenly beds.

“We pride ourselves in providing authentic hospitality experiences with an unparalleled location. With best-in-class service and unique offerings, we create a memorable experience for each guest.”

STAY SAFE DURING SUMMER ROAD TRIPS BY KEEPING YOUR TIRES IN TOP CONDITION

happy tires, happy

AIR PRESSURE

Ensuring your tires maintain the correct air pressure is among the most important safety maintenance before embarking on any road trip. To correctly inflate your tires, check your owner’s manual for the best air pressure. Avoid inflating your tires to the pressure indicated on the tire itself—this figure represents the maximum pressure the tire can withstand, not the recommended pressure for your vehicle. It is also always a good idea to check your spare tire for proper inflation when checking the rest of your tires.

TREAD DEPTH

Inspect your tire tread carefully and replace tires exhibiting uneven wear or insufficient tread depth. Typically, new tires come with 11/32 inches of tread. We suggest replacing tires when the tread depth reaches approximately 4/32 inches or lower. You can determine tire replacement needs by using the built-in wear bar indicators or conducting the penny test. For the penny test, insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head facing downwards. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, it indicates that it's time to replace your tires.

VEHICLE OVERLOADING

A vehicle carrying an excessive load places strain on tires, which can result in damage and eventual tire failure. Refer to the manufacturer’s load recommendation, accessible on the vehicle information placard located within the driver’s side door post or in the vehicle owner’s manual.

Sharing Stories Behind the Art

NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS CREATE UNIQUE WORKS THAT REFLECT THEIR CULTURE

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW VICK

Greg Bellanger

When Greg Bellanger’s father, Ken, a White Earth Band Member, founded what is now Northland Visions over 20 years ago, Greg was happy to help him out. “My degree is in fine arts and advertising, so three months after he opened, he came to me for help,” he says. “He was focusing on making nice gift boxes based around hand-harvested wild rice and other Native American foods, and needed help with the retail and art side of the business.”

In 2007, Greg fully took over store operations after his father retired. “I took my background, my family history and my art degree, and melded them together to create a retail version of Native history and Native art,” he says. “Most of our customers are Native, but I have a growing number

of customers that are not, and they come here looking to learn more about it and to buy pieces of art. We're not just sharing the art itself, we're also sharing the story and the history behind it.”

All the art is handmade by Native American artists, such as Jennifer White, who is an Arikara Native American from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. “She does acrylic on canvas, contemporary art mainly around Native women, buffalos and crows – imagery that is very prevalent in Plains-style Native art,” says Greg.

He had heard about her, and while driving through South Dakota about 10 years ago, sought out her pieces. “They're just very unique and vibrant with a lot of movement,” he says. “It was unlike anything I'd seen before.”

The store also carries ledger art from Jim Yellowhawk. Ledger art is a traditional way of recording history for Native American people.

“He's from the Cheyenne River Tribe in South Dakota, and I found him at a Native American art marketplace many years ago,” says Greg. “He does his artwork on old ledger paper with a contemporary twist.”

Works by local artist Gordon Coons, a member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, are also on display in the store. “He's a painter and printmaker, and he does traditional Ojibwe style imagery,” says Greg. “I have prints and originals depicting the old storytelling ways of the animals like otters, bears, crows and sturgeons.”

For the past four years, another local artist, William “Bill” Brien of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota, has had works represented at Northland Visions as well. “He creates digital imagery of traditional woodland floral patterns,” says Greg. “I have some of his canvas prints and metal prints.”

In addition to these items, the store carries porcupine quill work, an art form unique to Native

Americans, such as jewelry made from dyed and flattened porcupine quills. “I also have handmade beadwork items like moccasins, pipe bags, tobacco bags, and other merchandise like barrettes, earrings, necklaces and bracelets made from tiny seed beads. There are handmade Native style cedar flutes, and handpainted leather wallets of woodland scenes.” Customers can also find handmade traditional ribbon skirts, and turquoise and silver jewelry from the Southwest.

Greg is quite the artist himself and has some of his own creations for sale. “I make horse effigy dance sticks,” he says. “Males would use these to dance in honor of their horse before a hunt or if their horse passed away, so it was a way to honor their friend and companion. They would decorate it in a way that they envisioned their horse, so if it was really fast, they might have a lightning bolt on it. There were different ways they decorated them based on the personality or the persona of the horse.” He also makes large beaded bags and breastplates made from buffalo bone.

In addition to all the handmade items, the store carries mugs, coasters, interesting rocks, scarves, purses and more. “We go to merchandise markets and try to find unique items that aren't going to be sold everywhere else,” says Greg. “We've mainly been staying local because I want to support other local small businesses, but I might branch out in order to expand our unique selection.”

Last year, he started something new by having an artist come into the store to do a live demonstration. “Jennifer White did it and it was such a well-received event that we did it again with her this year. Customers were able to meet an artist, and when she was done, the paintings went up for sale.”  Northland Visions assists and supports Native American artists who work with beads by having a great selection of these items in stock. There’s an enormous bead counter filled with high-quality products from Czech Republic, Japan and more.

Invisalign

ANDERSON DENTALCARE ANSWERS QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NEW STANDARD IN ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

Invisalign has become the new standard in orthodontic treatment with over 17 million successful treatments worldwide. From the most complicated treatments to the very simple, Invisalign has many advantages over braces and wires.

Here are some answers to commonly asked questions.

"At Anderson Dentalcare, we offer a complimentary 30-minute appointment where you can ask all your questions to feel confident in your decision. If it’s the right thing for you we will be glad to move forward with your treatment."

How

does Invisalign work?

Invisalign uses virtual reality and 3D printing to make a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners that fit over your teeth. Each set of aligners is designed to gradually move your teeth into their desired position. You typically wear each set of aligners for one week before moving on to the next set in the series.

How do I find out if Invisalign is right for me?

At Anderson Dentalcare, we offer a complimentary 30-minute appointment where you can ask all your questions to feel confident in your decision. If it’s the right thing for you we will be glad to move forward with your treatment.

How long does treatment take?

The duration of treatment varies depending on the complexity of your case, but most treatments take two to four months for a simple correction, and for a complicated case it can take 12 to 18 months. A precise time estimate as well as the final outcome can be seen, before beginning treatment, by using Invisalign’s artificial intelligence.  In all situations, Invisalign takes less time and there is less discomfort than braces.

Are there any food restrictions?

Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners can be removed when you eat, so there are no food restrictions. However, you should brush your teeth to maintain good oral hygiene before putting the aligners back in your mouth. There are also no braces or wires on your teeth to trap food.

Will wearing Invisalign affect my speech?

Some people may experience a slight change in speech at first, however, this is temporary and improves quickly as your tongue gets used to having the aligners in your mouth.

How often do I need to see my dentist during the process?

Progress checks are needed every six to eight weeks. Multiple sets of numbered aligners are given at each appointment. Each week you change to the next aligner at home.

Spending time outdoors and enjoying friends and family over good food and drinks is a great way to enjoy the season’s beautiful weather. From the fresh flower arrangements, produce, and herbs, this earthy spread is brimming with character and flavor. The earthy ceramic and clay vases give the perfect vessel to fill with organic cut herbs and handpicked wildflowers. We arranged a beautiful medley of Queen Anne’s lace, mint, sage, rosemary, lavender, lamb’s ear, nigella, buddleia, oregano, dill, feverfew, and geranium to name just a few of these beautiful blooms.

We love a good home-cooked menu mixed with a signature drink, so we paired our meal with a delicious craft cocktail. Buttermilk brined fried chicken was a must for this outdoor party. A delicious peach bread pudding with salted vanilla caramel cream rounded out our meal for the perfect sweet treat. We wanted to share a few of our favorite recipes for you to try at home. Enjoy!
