BELLA GINA Boutique
Teresa shone against Marshall Field’s polished white floors like a ray of Mediterranean sunshine. She was tall, with long black hair, big brown eyes, and a smile from ear to ear. She carried herself with that certain cool, airy gravitas exercised exclusively by le donne d'Italia. At Teresa’s side beamed a 10-year-old girl.
“The department store was huge, everything was in drawers, and my experience was amazing!” said Gina Pellegrini. “My great-aunt Teresa bought me a yellow skirt, matching V-neck sweater, and a black dickie to wear underneath. I wore that outfit until it was threadbare. This is where my fashionista began: If I had money in my pocket, I would use it to go shopping.
“Shopping around the globe became my calling. I was always intrigued by how I was treated, the brands and store layouts, and of course the styles. Even as an adult, I always tried to emulate Teresa’s flair. Everything she wore seemed to flow together so seamlessly.”
By her mid-30s, Gina’s love for shopping had turned into a dream of opening her own boutique. She even had the name: Bella Gina Boutique. “My Nonna was my mentor and role model, and the one who always called me ‘Bella Gina’ in her beautiful accent,” Gina explained.
Bella Gina Boutique began as a popup: open eight hours a month and advertised only on bandit signs around town.
“My niece Kristina joined and cheered me on right from the beginning,” said Gina. “When I finally found the perfect brickand-mortar location in Eden Prairie, she and her husband Nick helped me set it up. She helped me keep my wits together when the pandemic struck just a few months after signing the lease, too.
“Now Kristina helps me decide what we bring into the store. We love going to different markets together. In addition to Minneapolis, we have traveled to Chicago and Dallas so far. Because we are different sizes, we get to try on many things while testing the fit, feel and durability of products we might source. Bella Gina Boutique is a testament to the bond between niece and auntie – and to friendship as well! I’m also very grateful to have Angela on my team. Her creative juices are always flowing with mine as we stock, merchandise, and make the shopping experience come alive for our customers.”

Say Arrivederci to Boring Fashion
PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY JOHN

Gina and her team practice the same kind of customer service she experienced with Teresa so many years ago, coupled with the warm kinship that le donne del Midwest know best.
“Our customers, who are usually between the ages of 35 to 85, are always looking for something fresh and exciting,” said Gina “Many newcomers claim their palette is black, gray, and white, only to discover that any color of the rainbow can suit them just as perfectly. I love seeing a customer’s face light up when she tries on something she thought she’d never wear, and the spring in her step when she’s leaving. Those are exactly the rewards I’d hoped for when I first opened my boutique.
“We welcome and appreciate every lady who visits us. We have helped many self-professed introverts gain the confidence they need to walk out the door with something we know they’ll get compliments on. And once we’ve learned their style, we're always on the hunt for specific things we know they’ll love.”
Part of Gina’s goal includes carrying merchandise by vendors that give back to the community, such as Scout Curated Wears, a jewelry company that donates 10 percent of their profits to organizations that support women, and Pretty Simple Boutique, a local purse designer that supports juvenile diabetes nonprofits. Gina also loves vendors that offer something unique, like Charlie B, Joh Apparel, Lulu-B, Tribal, XCVI, and Insect Shield, her favorite, which lets people enjoy the great outdoors minus its worst part.
Another part of Gina’s goal is to make each guest feel like they are walking into their best friend’s closet. They get honest feedback, and imaginative suggestions that help them feel just as beautiful outside as they are inside.
Visit Bella Gina Boutique at 10165 Hennepin Town Road in Eden Prairie, or the online store at bellaginaboutique. com. Almost everything in the store is also on its website!

BREAKING BARRIERS. BUILDING HOPE.

ONE WORLD SURGERY
Five billion people lack access to surgery. Even if the change would be infinitesimally small, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Peter Daly and his wife LuLu, a pediatric nurse, resolved to help lower
Upon returning to Minnesota, the Dalys shared their experience with Summit Orthopedics: the specialty practice Dr. Daly works for, which provides comprehensive musculoskeletal
"ONE WORLD SURGERY'S MISSION HAS BECOME THE HEARTBEAT OF SUMMIT ORTHOPEDICS."
that figure when they volunteered at Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos, a Honduran children’s home, in 2003.
In addition to children, Dr. Daly treated anyone who visited the converted semi trailer that served as his clinic. The orthopedic surgeon hadn’t imagined the need for his care would be small. Even so, he was unnerved by what he witnessed.
“Imagine you were in a car accident,”
Dr. Daly explained. “You have open wounds, and a terrible compound fracture in your leg. If you go to the hospital in the U.S., you would receive emergency and follow-up care. If you do the same thing in Honduras, then the best you might hope for is amputation.
“An inexcusable number of people face decisions like that every day. And they won’t suffer alone. They’ll become dependent on their families, which only perpetuates the cycle of misery and poverty that racks developing nations.”
care at nearly 30 clinics throughout the Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin.
Dr. Daly’s team members recognized an opportunity to change lives – and, by extension, the world – through the power of surgery. After four years of concerted intercontinental effort between Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos, Summit Orthopedics, and Surgical Care Affiliates, One World Surgery was born. Today it serves people living in Honduras and the Dominican Republic.
“Our goal isn’t to turn this into a franchise,” said Dr. Daly. “It’s to maintain our two existing facilities’ standard of care, and continue growing their presence in the communities they serve. These facilities operate year round thanks not just to our own volunteers, but to the local staff who are so essential to our efforts.”
Orthopedics isn’t One World Surgery’s sole focus. Their clinics also offer gynecology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, urology and general surgery.

“We had to diversify to meet our patients’ vast surgical needs,” explained Beckie Hines, COO of Summit Orthopedics. “For example, we recently treated a man with a large and rapidly spreading growth on his face. He had already visited the local hospital, which required him to pay for the supplies for his surgical procedure. He and his daughter managed to scrape together the money – only to get robbed by a gang on their way to the hospital.
“One World Surgery was that man’s last chance. The general surgeon on site was daunted by his case at first. But after many hours of research and consulting with plastic surgeons in the U.S., he was able to successfully remove the growth. I’ll never forget the moment when the patient and his daughter hugged that surgeon – a fleeting gesture, but one that illustrated the hope One World Surgery creates on a daily basis.”
“Whatever their roles might be, everyone at Summit Orthopedics pursued a career in healthcare for the same reason,” added Dr. Daly. “We want to help people. Unfortunately, it’s easy to lose sight of that goal while you’re working in the U.S., where there are so many regulations and time constraints. Although One World Surgery strictly adheres to the highest standards of care, it lets us practice the purest form of medicine; a prevailing sense of duty toward others, and constant opportunities to act on it.”
Dr. Edward Su and family
“VOLUNTEERING ABROAD IS ABOUT LOSING YOURSELF IN SERVICE."
“It can be very challenging,” said Peggy Gustafson, director of nursing for Summit Orthopedics. “I can’t tell you how many times we’ve all had to put our heads together and come up with creative solutions. We often have to make instruments and implants work for treatments they weren’t designed for. But at the end of the day, I’m always grateful – not just for the privilege of helping people in need, but for the chance to continually hone our skills as well.”
“Volunteering abroad is about losing yourself in service,” said Andrea Bien, liaison for Summit Orthopedics and One World Surgery. “It’s about being your authentic self, giving back to others, and forming lifelong friendships with the people you’re privileged to help.
“We recognize that many will never experience that joy firsthand, but anyone can support our mission. That’s why we welcome you to celebrate One World Surgery’s 20th anniversary gala on Sunday, October 5th at the InterContinental Minneapolis. Please visit oneworldsurgery.org/gala to learn more!”

Eatin' Prairie Burger Battle
Experience the Thrill of the Grill
All September
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
Baked beans. Corn chowder. Spaghetti. First Western Bank & Trust and the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce could have themed a month-long celebration of local restaurants around any food they cared to. But they’re smart. They chose to showcase the greatest delicacy ever to grace the face of the earth. I am speaking, of course, of the burger – one part divinity, one part bovinity, and the reason why we observe the Eatin’ Prairie Burger Battle throughout September.
Don’t be alarmed. It’s not a real battle. It’s something incomparably jollier: a no-toppings-barred contest between restaurateurs to see who can plate the premier patty. And in this colosseum, you are the emperor, who will judge the ground beef gladiators according to four criteria: presentation, creativity, customer service, and, quite naturally, taste. Simply dine at (or order takeout or delivery from) a participating restaurant, scan the QR code you are provided, and fulfill your duty to help decide the winner of the coveted Golden Spatula.
If you vote on every burger, then you won’t just get the best thing in the world: the satisfaction of having eaten every burger. You will also have a chance to win a gift card from one of the very restaurants you so graciously supported.
“We owe this wonderful idea to our friends at First Western Bank & Trust,” said Izzy Nelson, intern with the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce. “When market president David Thompson and his team explained it to our board, we instantly recognized a perfect opportunity to promote local commerce.

“Last year’s inaugural Eatin’ Prairie Burger Battle really highlighted the creativity of Eden Prairie restaurants. Brick & Bourbon, Fat Pants Brewing Co., Kona Grill, Mi Pueblo, Pizza Karma, Smokin Hottdish and Tavern 4&5 all came up with marvelous entries. But at the end of the month, it was The Original Pancake House’s ‘Blackberry Bacon Jam Burger’ that reigned supreme: a third-pound Angus patty buried under crispy hashbrowns, a fried egg, and delicious house-made jam.”
What you’re about to read next will astound you: Everyone who participates in the Eatin’ Prairie Burger Battle is a winner!
“A rising tide raises all ships,” Izzy continued. “We could have indiscriminately promoted any industry and still done good by our community, but the Eatin’ Prairie Burger Battle accomplishes something extra special. It bolsters the businesses which were hit hardest by the lockdown. It draws attention to dining establishments that some locals might not yet have heard about. It fosters the variety which makes Eden Prairie such an attractive base of operations for large employers. Best of all, the Eatin’ Prairie Burger Battle is accessible to every member of our community.”
“I’d like to express my gratitude to all of the restaurants that participated last September,” said Pat MulQueeny, president of the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce. “Brick & Bourbon’s ‘The Smoked Brick’ featured their own house-smoked pulled rib meat. Pizza Karma's ‘Lamb Burger’ was infused with a delicate blend of cardamom and almond – an inspiring redefinition of an American classic. Fat Pants Brewing Co.’s ‘MeatballBecue Burger’ was brilliant: stuffed with pepper jack and barbecue sauce, topped with coleslaw on a brioche bun. I cannot wait to see how this year’s entrants are going to top last year’s unique and exciting burgers!”
Brazin Public House, Fat Pants Brewing Co., My Burger, Pizza Karma, and The Original Pancake House are all confirmed for this month’s Eatin' Prairie Burger Battle at the time of writing. Visit epchamber.org to see the full list of contenders and learn how to get in on the action!

Nordquist TAX & BUSINESS SERVICES
TAKING ALL THE STRESS OUT OF HALF OF LIFE’S CERTAINTIES
Whenever I see a tax form, I get the same feeling as when I look at modern art. Maybe it’s totally abstract. Maybe it actually means something. Who knows?
But I am certain of one thing: That form has no business in my hands. It’s a test of mathematical skill and attention to detail, which I have neither of, and it isn’t graded by some kindly old school teacher either.
That’s why I thank goodness for Nordquist Tax & Business Services. The local team of federally authorized IRS Enrolled Agents shares nearly three quarters of a century of experience in personal and corporate taxes, and offers bookkeeping services for small and medium businesses as well. Their agents’ knowledge of tax codes, deduction eligibility, and income-saving strategies saves people time, money, and the excruciation of dealing with the federal government.
“Many people find taxes to be confusing, complicated, and downright scary,” said lead tax consultant Vickie Nordquist. “Our job is to take all the worry and fear out of the process. We’ll do everything you need to get through each tax season, just short of writing the checks.”
Vickie began preparing taxes over 30 years ago, shortly after receiving her degree in accounting from University of Minnesota. She originally took the part-time job because she wanted another skillset, but it wasn’t long until she realized how rewarding tax preparation can feel. Every client she served gave her another opportunity to create peace of mind where it was needed most. She reassured them. She filed flawless tax returns for them. She kept the IRS away from them. She wouldn’t have called it heroism, but she could see it made a big difference all the same.
In addition to preparing taxes, Vickie worked at a private accounting firm where she learned how to do corporate returns. When that firm became a casualty of 2008, Vickie brought the clients she inherited to her newly founded business.
“Before I began working for myself, I was a controller,” said Vickie. “Payroll, compliance and financial statements are all second nature to me by now, but extra challenges, such as audits and PPP loans, always pop up to keep things interesting.
“We make expert corporate tax services available to many local entrepreneurs who have big dreams, but not necessarily the need or means to hire a full-time accountant and bookkeeper. I love joining businesses that are just starting out, and helping them set the foundation for their future successes. I equally enjoy partnering with already established businesses, and ensuring they can continue making profits while bringing new employment opportunities to our community. Restaurateurs, contractors, consultants, real estate investors – they all deserve to do their jobs with the confidence that can only come with support from an experienced financial team. CONTINUED >

“And Nordquist Tax & Business Services certainly is a team effort. I’m honored to be joined by Cindy Fermanich, whose people skills are matched only by her powers of research and tax preparation. We have my daughter, Sarah Meyer, who is a real chip off the old financial block and so wonderful with our clients. We have Anita Whims, a dedicated perfectionist of a bookkeeper if there ever was one. And of course there is Linda Phillips, our office manager, who puts her warm, personal
touch on each interaction we have with our clients. I thank them all for their great work!”
Whether you need a straightforward personal return or a complex corporate filing, Nordquist Tax & Business Services is here to make it all easy for you. Call (952) 232-6262 today to book a free tax preparation consultation at their Eden Prairie office, or visit nordquisttax.com to learn more about the woman-owned business’s comprehensive tax and bookkeeping services.

ACCESS DESIGN + BUILD
Accessible, Adaptive and Universal Design

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
It’s all about shaping the client’s home to best fit their needs, and creating at least one place where they feel truly accepted.”
Access Design + Build is the Twin Cities’ authority on aging-in-place remodeling, and creates accommodating spaces for people with mobility and sensory challenges as well. Meticulous design and expert construction count for everything during these projects. A single poor choice can defeat their whole purpose.
From your perspective, this should be true of any remodel or addition you’re personally paying for. You may not necessarily need a curbless shower or wheelchair-accessible kitchen – but you would like a contractor that can conceptualize and execute such sophisticated projects all the same.
Fortunately, Access Design + Build does it all. Whoever you are, your comfort, convenience and peace of mind are all assured once you’ve witnessed the local contractor’s person-centered, solution-focused approach in action.
ACCESSIBLE REMODELING
“We make remodeling easy by using a tool too many contractors do without,” said Jeannine Burnett, founder and principal designer of Access Design + Build. “Communication . That goes beyond answering my phone when you call.
It means listening to you so we can fully understand your goals for your project. It means sharing the photos that help us bring your vision to life. It also means providing a schedule that details the project in full: who is coming, when they’re coming, how long they’re coming for, and why they’re staying for that amount of time.
“I like showrooms as much as the next designer, but I would much rather bring the showroom to you. Samples and storyboards are much more illuminating when they’re viewed in the spaces they’re meant for. Viewing them on-site also ensures we design a coherent living space: where all the materials complement one another just as well as they accommodate you.”
QUALITY BY DESIGN
“It doesn’t matter if we’re incorporating grab bars, low countertops and a walk-in tub into its layout,” Jeannine explained. “We can make any bathroom look like it was plucked straight from a five-star spa, regardless of who we’re creating it for. We also ensure every remodel has the right impact on the home’s resale value. Accessibility doesn’t have to come at the cost of aesthetics. Clunkiness and sterility are both easily avoided by making the right choices.

“A single project can improve your home in more ways than you imagined. A few years ago we updated a client’s century-old kitchen so it could have actual counter space. During the planning phase, we realized we could also give them a back hallway without doing any exterior work. We effectively expanded their living space without having to increase their home’s square footage. They were so delighted with the result that they recently welcomed us back to build another project for them.
“It’s the little extras that really make our services stand out. If I happen across the perfect shower curtain for your new bathroom, it just might materialize there to surprise you. If we notice something isn’t up to code, we bring it there. And whenever one of our tradespeople makes a mess, they make sure it’s gone before the workday has ended. In short, if there’s a finishing touch, the project’s not finished without it.”
BUILDING ACCEPTANCE
“Several of our clients have disabilities, and have been marginalized their entire lives because of them,” said Jeannine. “I fully empathize, and ardently believe that everyone should feel accepted wherever they go.
“Sadly, many people feel flat out rejected by their own homes. Appliances, cabinets, countertops, and even the floor plan itself can fight against someone who has limited mobility. The same often holds true for non-disabled people, too. Whoever designed your home probably didn’t do it with you specifically in mind!
“Whether I’m incorporating it into the flow or removing it altogether, I find a solution to each of these obstacles. It’s all about shaping the client’s home to best fit their needs, and creating at least one place where they feel truly accepted.”
Call (612)-283-8386 today to book your free one-hour consultation with Jeannine, or visit accessdesignbuild.com to learn more about Access Design + Build’s all-encompassing solutions to disability, aging-in-place, and all other kinds of remodeling!

Brace Helgeson, Realtor

FOUNDER OF THE #1 COLDWELL BANKER TEAM IN MINNESOTA
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
“People notice it’s no longer called ‘Helgeson Platzke Real Estate Group.’ It’s ‘Platzke Real Estate Group’ now – a change I expected to happen one day, and one that I believe will ultimately work out for the best,” said Brace Helgeson.
The renaming of Eden Prairie’s number one home seller marked the passing of a torch. Having built up his company since the early ‘80s, Brace was finally ready to enjoy the full fruits of his labor.
“There will probably never be a retirement party for me. I have built a reputation and a brand, and I just love selling homes too much,” said Brace. “Leading this company for 41 years – with Ryan as my partner for the past 15 of them – has been an honor. I spent that time building what I believe to be the most effective and professional real estate team in the country. When new agents join our team, it’s not uncommon for them to double, triple, or even quadruple their business. Creating an environment where our 38 agents’ full talents shine will always be the crowning achievement of my career.
“But at the end of the day, my passion is selling real estate. I wanted to spend every remaining minute of my career laser-focused on my clients, many of whom become great friends. Moreover, I wanted to continue to experience selling homes in every price range in all the new markets this company has expanded into over the years. The entire west metro now knows and trusts our brand!
“As a full-time agent, I can now take full advantage of the powerful marketing engine I helped build.
We invest more into marketing than 99 percent of all other agencies in Minnesota. That’s why we maintain a vast network of buyers with over 42,000 email subscribers, which allows many of our clients to sell their homes without even having to list them. It’s why Platzke Real Estate Group has monopolized every single Eden Prairie zip code on Zillow, which makes us the first to pop up whenever people search online for houses here. It’s also why our team closed 423 transactions totaling $247 million in sales during last year alone.
“I made my transition at an opportune time. Sure, the historic low 2.65 percent mortgage APR is now three years behind us. But we’re still below the historic average of 7.5 percent, and well below the 14 percent I sold houses for when I was first starting out. In addition to low inventory, that has turned the western suburbs into a red-hot seller’s market. And as one of our area’s most experienced listing agents, I’m posed to make sure my clients get the absolute most of it.
“I may no longer run the company, but I have full confidence Ryan will continue growing it in the right direction. I’m excited to see what the future holds in store for Platzke Real Estate Group!”
If you’re thinking about buying or selling a home in the western suburbs, always remember: experience matters, and no one has more of it in your area than Brace. Contact Brace at bhelgeson@cbburnet.com or (612) 310-4300.

PEDEGO

Save your stamina. Forget about fossil fuels. Ride around town on the future of pedal-assist technology.
Pedego e-bikes are just as fun as they are practical!
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
Pedego offers an e-bike for every budget and lifestyle. Looking for an entry-level model that’ll help you keep up with your companions? Check out the Comfort Cruiser. Need a fat-tired conqueror of subpar road conditions? The Element won’t slip up. Want the accessibility of a classic step-through? Go test out the Boomerang at either of Pedego’s official dealerships in Eden Prairie or Mendota Heights.
If you’re only just joining the e-bike craze, then you’ve successfully waited until the arrival of Pedego’s neatest two models to date: the Moto, which has updated the free-spirited moped lifestyle for the 21st century, and the Cargo, which can transport payloads as heavy as 500 pounds.
“The Moto is great for daily commutes to campus or work,” said Tony Gaffney, owner of Pedego Twin Cities. “Its ‘70s-style banana seat can accommodate any friend you’d like to take to happy hour as well. And there’s no
need for auto insurance because e-bikes aren’t classified as motor vehicles.
“Like all Pedego e-bikes, the Moto lets you use as much or as little pedal assist as you care for, and has an independent throttle for quick intersection crossings. If you’re really going on a journey, the Moto’s 20-amp battery will get you there: up to 75 miles on a single charge, with front and back shocks to keep you comfortable the whole trip.
“That’s nothing compared to the Cargo, which can carry you up to 135 miles (if you opt for the double-battery model). It is a true sport utility e-bike, which can safely carry a full load of groceries in addition to an adult or child passenger. Plenty of families have already replaced one of their vehicles with a Cargo.”
Wear what Tony calls the “permanent e-bike smile.”
Test out the Moto, Cargo, or any of Pedego’s other revolutionary e-bikes at their Eden Prairie location at 9719 Valley View Road, or their Mendota Heights location at 1355 Mendota Heights Road. Visit pedegoelectricbikes.com to learn more!

Modern Day Me

Modern Day Me activates people, places and ideas through art, design and experience. It is channeling the ethos of the Twin Cities into public works projects, as well as creative services for clients that have included the IDS Center and the Minnesota Twins. Modern Day Me also fosters that ethos by giving contemporary and future creatives real opportunities to bring their creative visions to life.
“I’ve always been curious about people,” said Jared Hanks, founder of Modern Day Me. “What makes us tick? What gives us purpose? I’m sure it’s many things, but I believe that expression – real creativity, with a design or a goal – is the thread that connects all of us.”
Jared grew up on the east side of St. Paul. After studying sociology, culture and human development at UofM, he was all set to begin a career in education. Starting out during the tail end of the
Great Recession didn’t make things easy, but he managed to land a part-time job tutoring for Minneapolis Public Schools, as well as night and weekend shifts at an in-patient treatment facility for women with children. Those experiences solidified Jared’s passion for youth work, and taught him the importance of education in breaking the cycle of addiction, dependency and welfare.
Jared would go on to found two businesses, both designed to engage local youth in their community: a landscaping company, and Helping Hand Companies which provides garden design, installation and general labor services. Although landscaping and general labor can both be considered creative to arguable degrees, the young social entrepreneur charted a new course when he joined Juxtaposition Arts, a non-profit youth art and design education center in North Minneapolis.

CREATIVE. DEVELOPMENT. AGENCY.
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
Jared Hanks, Founder and Creative Director
“Juxtaposition connects kids to the creative industry by providing them with work opportunities in graphic design, architecture, urban planning and more,” said Jared. “I helped it grow and become more profitable during my seven years as its head of business development. But Juxtaposition did much more for me. It refined my calling.
“I launched Modern Day Me so I could exclusively focus on connecting creatives to market opportunities. That goes beyond just seeking opportunities out. It means actually creating them, by presenting ideas that will best showcase the talents of ambitious young creatives while serving our clients’ aspirations and needs.”
Modern Day Me’s work takes many forms, including marketing and branding, custom murals, public art, and event curation. “The projects we’re most passionate about are the ones that have the greatest social impact,” said Jared. “For example, we recently partnered with the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District to reinvent a 12,000 square foot alleyway that had been hit especially hard by the lockdown. It had become overrun with criminal activity, and had grown so bad that police began barricading traffic.

“We’re not problem solvers. We’re solution creators, who bring in more positive instead of blocking the negative. We revitalized that alleyway with greenery and other organic elements, as well as a giant multi-color mural incorporating a basketball court for the kids attending a nearby school. From pressure washing to completion, everything was handled by the very same people who stood the most to gain from improving that little piece of our community. Today the alley is a vibrant and welcoming backdrop for community events, gatherings, games, yoga classes, and so much more. We’re excited to continue working with the city as we handle public engagement for its upcoming First Avenue reconstruction project.
“None of that is to say that our work for the private sector feels any less rewarding. Our creatives welcome any opportunity to
beautify a corporate workspace with custom artwork or a one-ofa-kind mural. We also love education. Modern Day Me has helped students explore their creative expression at several public schools and universities, where we have provided everything from one-day workshops to semester-long classes on mural making.
“Our focus may seem expansive, but at the end of the day, everything we do boils down to the same thing: treating ideas as the world’s greatest asset. A lot of people think their ideas can’t make a difference unless they’re a luminary. Modern Day Me proves that you don’t have to be the next Malcolm X or Mother Teresa if you want to change the world for the better.”

Pith Artistic Wood Works

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
“I spent my whole career as an electrician, mainly focusing on commercial work,” said Jim Harvey. “My brother-in-law was a cabinetmaker. So was my daughter’s godfather. With connections like those, I got a lot of jobs wiring woodshops.
“When I retired, I joined the Bluff Creek Senior Men’s Club. Another member kept telling me I had to check out the Eden Prairie Senior Center woodshop. I insisted I’d already spent enough time in hot, dusty woodshops, but I eventually caved in. And I’m glad I did. It turned out I’d never appreciated the woodshop for the wood.”
Pens. Bottle stoppers. Small bowls, big bowls and onward. As Jim lathed away at increasingly complex projects, his long-concealed love for woodworking continued growing. He spent so much time at the Senior Center woodshop that he became its safety instructor. He even invested in a CNC machine during the lockdown.
Today, Jim does it all. He has made decorative bowls to commemorate a family’s favorite climbing tree after it was felled by a storm. Enormous cribbage boards with easily maneuvered quarter-inch dowels. Urns illustrating the dearly departed’s greatest passions in life. Each project gave Jim pride and satisfaction – and that’s all he wants.
“I don’t make a lot of money with Pith Artistic Wood Works,” explained Jim. “Whatever I make from art fairs and custom projects goes right back into my hobby. The real reward is seeing people appreciate the things I make.”

PREMEDITATED DAFFODILS
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
“Want your own tulips and daffodils to let you know when it’s spring? Then September is the best time to plant them,” explained Kelly Lorenz, general manager of The Mustard Seed. “Those flowers’ bulbs have to spend winter underground before they can bloom in the spring.”
CLEAVED PERENNIALS
“Fall is a great time to divide any perennials that are taking over your garden. The cooler temperatures cause them to store more of their energy in their roots. Just take a shovel and chop off a clump of hosta. It won’t hurt the plant, and you can replant the clump.”
PLEASED TREES
“Fall is an excellent season for tree planting, too. The ground is warm enough for roots to get comfortable and set themselves. There’s still plenty more time left for watering. Fall also has the nicest weather for all that hard work!”
Have someone else do all that hard work for you. Call The Mustard Seed today at (952) 445-6555, or get inspired at 10,000 Great Plains Boulevard in Chaska! themustardseedinc.com
