Hello Eden Prairie Lifestyle readers, “Manliness gains much strength by being challenged.” I have thought about Seneca’s immortal words ever since I looked up a profound quote to introduce this publisher’s letter. That’s why I’ve decided to make things as difficult as possible for myself moving forward. From now on I will conduct all of my professional correspondence via carrier pigeon, and exclusively schedule client meetings on Sunday mornings at the Flying J Travel Center of Altoona, Iowa.
The rest of the Eden Prairie Lifestyle team will similarly hone their strength through adversity. Effective next issue, our writers will no longer be allowed to use verbs. Our photographers will be required to develop their photos the old-fashioned way: in dark rooms, surrounded by what I assume to be highly toxic chemicals. And no more printing. I want each issue transcribed by hand, just like the good old days before Johannes Gutenberg came along and ruined the scrivening industry
But you, dear reader? You deserve to have it as easy as you would care to, which is why our annual gentlemen’s issue is packed full of great local gentlemen-owned businesses that are ready to serve you. We have O.C. Detail, which will make your car a pristine machine. We have Pane Masters, which will scour your windows, gutters and siding free of all offending debris. We have Window Outfitters and Garage Floor Outfitters, whose expert technicians can make any home whole. We have Sergeant Shortbread, whose sublime beer cookies beg to be eaten whole. We also have Bill’s Toggery, which will make any man look like a million bucks for decidedly less.
Read on to discover Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, now playing live at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. Read on to learn about Riley Crossing Senior Living’s family-focused care. Read on to know what a great time we all had at the Red & Black Gala. Read on, dear reader, even if doing so challenges you at times. The more your knowledge of this issue’s contents grows, the stronger you shall become!
As always, I would like to thank all of Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sponsors, without whose generous support we could not mail our magazine directly to our readers’ homes. I always welcome any feedback or interest you may have in appearing on our magazine’s pages!
Best regards,

On April 12th, 2024, the Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools (FEPS) held their annual Red & Black Gala. Approximately 200 guests attended for an evening of fine dining, live music, general merriment, and support for the greatest cause there is: Eden Prairie students!
“It was a wonderful evening at Bearpath Golf & Country Club,” said Dr. Lisa Sisinni, executive director of FEPS. “Spotty-fi, a band formed by Central Middle School band director Ben Anderson, played a magnificent set that kept guests entertained all night long. Our online and live auctions, which featured items including a guitar signed by Taylor Swift and a trip for two to the Dominican Republic, helped us raise over $55,000 for Eden Prairie Schools and our own grant programs. But most beautiful of all were our Legacy Awards, in which we honored over 150 outstanding teachers, staff, students, volunteers, alumni and community members
who contribute to the success and excellent reputation of our school district.
“We capped off the evening by announcing the winning proposal for our $100,000 grant. After multiple community members proposed the idea of teaching tomorrow’s leaders in AI and robotics, we worked with the Eden Prairie School District to see what would best fit their mission and vision, and decided to award the grant for the construction of Eden Prairie High School’s new emerging technologies lab. Dr. Josh Swanson graciously accepted the check on behalf of the district, to much applause.
“We thank every generous member of our community who made the evening possible, and are already looking forward to next year’s Red & Black Gala!”

More than two dozen of America’s best-loved popular songs – and the remarkable woman who wrote them – take the main stage at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Beautiful thrilled Broadway audiences for nearly six years, winning Tony and Grammy awards.
Beautiful is the warmly inspiring story of Carole King’s rise from hopeful teenage songwriter to superstar performer and recording artist. “This isn’t a one-woman show, or a ‘jukebox musical,’” says Chanhassen Dinner Theatres artistic director Michael Brindisi, who with his daughter Cat BrindisiDarrow directs the musical.
Beautiful opens with King’s 1971 Carnegie Hall concert, then flashes back to trace her journey from her Brooklyn roots to Manhattan, center of the songwriting world in the late 1950s. There she meets her future husband and collaborator Gerry Goffin, and legendary producer Don Kirshner. “It was fortunate she ran into Kirshner, who became a lifelong friend,” says Michael. “He wasn’t your typical producer. He cared about the kids whose careers he nurtured, and wanted them to get ahead.” And get ahead she did, writing or co-writing 118 songs that hit the Billboard Hot 100.
With brilliant lyricist Goffin, King wrote the music for the pop soundtrack of the early ‘60s, with songs including “Up on the Roof,” “The Loco-Motion,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” and “One Fine Day.” These and many more are featured in Beautiful , in stunningly accurate renditions recalling original recording artists such as The Drifters, Little Eva, and The Shirelles.
Beautiful isn’t just a story of songwriting success. “Carole King broke new ground for women in the business,” says Michael. “In the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, songwriting was a man’s world, but King changed that.”
It’s helpful, he adds, that his daughter and co-director Cat brings “a strong female perspective to the project.” By the time of that 1971 concert in New York, Carole King was enjoying the second act of her phenomenal career. According to Michael, “After her marriage to Goffin fell apart, she realized she would have to go it alone – ‘I should be the one to sing my songs,’ she finally decided. She’d never wanted to take that step –throughout her life, self-esteem was an issue – but when she did break out on a solo career, her old Brooklyn friends told her they knew she had it in her all along.”
What she had in her was 25 solo albums, including the 1971 classic Tapestry, which sold over 30 million copies worldwide. An audience that might have been too young to dance to the early King-Goffin hits was won over by “So Far Away,” “It’s Too Late,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” and King’s rendition of her composition “Natural Woman,” originally recorded by Aretha Franklin. Tapestry favorites, too, are a big part of Beautiful.
Beautiful stars Monet Sabel, a veteran of the show’s Broadway tour. “We searched for someone familiar with the story, and its New York City background,” says Michael. “And Monet is a fantastic actress.” He adds that he and Cat also “did a lot of research to flesh out the supporting characters – the real people who made the songs famous.”
“With a cast of 29 singers and dancers, a terrific book, and all the great tunes, Beautiful tells the whole story of Carole King’s career,” says Michael. “It’s a play for all generations. For young people, it shows that anything is possible.”
Reviewers agree with what Michael calls “spectacular” word of mouth. Beautiful is “not a revue or an echo, but a living thing,” says the Star Tribune. “It’s a beauty to experience.”

It doesn’t matter if you drive a ‘23 G-Class that only goes to Kowalski’s and Bearpath. It doesn’t matter if you drive a ‘93 Celebrity that contains a wrapper for every fast food item you’ve ever eaten. If it’s on four wheels – or two wheels, because O.C. Detail also does motorcycles –then O.C. Detail can turn it into a righteous beauty.
“I developed some compulsive behaviors around cleaning things in my home during 2015,” said Chris Devore, founder of O.C. Detail. “At the time my marketing career wasn’t going so hot, so I had hours to spend wiping down counters, touching up grout, and throwing out clutter.”
It wasn’t long until Chris’s cleaning started driving his family nuts. He considered stopping, but he didn’t want to. Compulsions are funny that way. He then thought up a far more elegant and remunerative solution: clean things obsessively … for money
“I already knew my neighbor got his car detailed each year,” said Chris. “I told him this year was special, because he could pay me $180 to do it instead. I invested some of that money in supplies and set right to work cleaning his car inside and out.”
Chris spent hours vacuuming and wiping and brushing and polishing and waxing his neighbor’s car. He didn’t realize he wanted to be a detailer for the rest of his life when he stepped back to appreciate all his hard work. He knew it as soon as he started vacuuming.
“In the marketing world, you can spend over a year working on something to no real effect. Detailing didn’t just exorcize my cleaning demons, and give me an immediate reward for my effort. It also satisfied the people pleaser in me. Seeing my neighbor so happy was just the icing on the cake.”
Thus O.C. Detail was born. Today the business employs multiple people at a dedicated workshop in Eden Prairie, just south of where Valley View Road shoots out from 169. It contains every instrument Chris and his team need to perform miracles of interior detailing, exterior detailing, paint correction and ceramic coating.
“Our biggest interior detailing challenge to date involved a gallon of house paint. That shade of yellow would have looked nice in our client’s kitchen, no doubt about it, but it wasn’t doing much for her car’s backseat as a large, partially hardened blob. It took an experimental combination of hot water extraction and organic cleanser, but we removed all traces of the paint. To say she was pleased is an understatement.
“The worst exterior we’ve detailed so far belonged to a guy who drove too close to an erupting geyser in one of the Dakotas. The minerals in the geyser water etched almost every square inch of his exterior, but our paint correction made his truck look better than factory fresh in no time. There’s a common reaction to our paint correction service: ‘It looks better than new.’ That’s because it is!
“Meteorological events often put our work to the test. We once applied ceramic coating for one of our clients, only for him to get stuck in a hailstorm three weeks later. His insurance company wouldn’t reimburse him for the coating. Even though his car got blasted with 40 to 50 hail dimples, the coating was still perfectly intact. We owe part of that to the quality of our product – the best of the many, many brands I’ve personally tested – but the rest boils down to our expert work.
“It sounds simple, but at the end of the day it’s all about commitment to our customer. We want to fill the streets of Eden Prairie with proud drivers!”
Sterilization. Salt removal. Carpet shampooing. Ozone treatment. The paint correction and ceramic coating your car needs in order to look like a big candy apple. Learn all about them at autodetailingcrew.com.

SHAKOPEE’S THIRD-GENERATION MEN’S CLOTHIER
“Twin Cities men have always been renowned for cutting a respectable figure.
Like all writers who work from home, I love nothing more than dressing immaculately every day. When I’m writing about something fancy, I wear a tuxedo. When I’m writing about the workplace, only a custom suit will do. And when I’m writing about something casual, I wear casual wear.
You’re probably wondering how I find the time to shop for premium men’s clothing and still write such scintillating magazine articles. I will let you in on my secret, but please try and keep it to yourself. I don’t want to attract large crowds of people to the store where I find everything I need in one place, including elegant footwear, stylish sportswear, and professional alterations.
I shop … at Bills Toggery
Perhaps you have noticed the Twin Cities’ premier men’s clothier already. It is located in downtown Shakopee, where it was founded by Bill Wermerskirchen in 1931. The Great Depression was not good for Bill’s business, if you can believe it, but the entrepreneur knew what he was doing. Twin Cities men have always been renowned for cutting a respectable figure. Depression or no, they would have to get their suits somewhere.
Bill was so committed to authenticity that he made certain only Bills would own Bill’s Toggery. His son, Bill Wermerskirchen, Jr., ran the store for several decades. So too has his grandson, Billy – the very same polished gent who greets guests at Bill’s today. Billy wears a tape measure around his neck like a doctor
does a stethoscope, and one can only dream of matching their necktie to their pocket square as deftly as he.
Of course, Billy has no secrets to keep when it comes to men’s clothing.
“Like anything else in this world, the secret to selling men’s clothing boils down to the Golden Rule,” said Billy. “Treat people the way you want to be treated yourself. Our customers come from all over the Twin Cities because we do things the old-fashioned way: clothing men take pride in wearing, provided with the expertise they need to look their absolute sharpest.”
Dress clothes have always been the backbone of Bill’s. With formal wear by Jack Victor, Hart Schaffner Marx, David Donahue, John Forsyth, and other reputable American and Canadian brands, they can dress any man for success in the boardroom. And because Bill’s offers a full catalog of tuxedos by Jim’s Formal Wear, you can finally find the perfect accompaniment to your favorite cummerbund.
Worried that a suit from Bill’s won’t complement your Zeus-like physique? Don’t be. They offer a vast selection of suits and sport coats from 34S to 60XL, and their full-time tailor Shelly can make any alterations jackets and pants need to conform to the man who was always meant to wear them.
Are you attending a golf tournament, barbecue, beach party, or other social occasion where camel hair and Oxfords would look out of place? Then Bill’s is still your personal clothier.
Like anything else in this world, the secret to selling men’s clothing boils down to the Golden Rule.
“We carry a wide variety of high-quality casual wear,” said Billy. “We have active apparel by Vuori, 7Diamonds and Tasc Performance. We have comfortable yet fashionable jeans by 34 Heritage, authentic Norwegian wool sweaters by Dale of Norway, refined sportswear by Peter Millar, a great selection of footwear by Johnston & Murphy, all of johnnie-O’s SoCal fashions, and Swissmade running shoes by On.”
I am especially fond of Howler Brothers of Texas. Whenever I don one of their Western-inspired button-downs, I feel like the kind of rugged cowboy sage who would dispense sparsely worded yet deeply philosophical advice to city slickers, silhouetted by the setting sun, before galloping off to lasso errant cattle. Wear one yourself and you’ll feel the same exact way.
Ladies, I know what you’re thinking. “What does Bill’s offer me?” Only the greatest thing in the world:
the ideal place to shop for the men you buy clothing or gifts for. My wife always says I look fantastic when I’m dressed in clothes from Bill’s, and it’s not just because I categorically refuse to accept criticism in any form.
“Owning a third-generation business like mine feels as much like I’m passing down a legacy as I am working a job,” said Billy. “I’ve read that the odds of a business lasting as long as Bill’s are ten against one. And I expect we’ll last much longer. William the fourth will enter second grade this fall, and he’s already showing a preternatural aptitude for men’s fashion.”
Bill’s Toggery is located at 138 Lewis Street S in downtown Shakopee. They are open Monday through Saturday, as well as by special appointment. You may learn more about the historic men’s clothier at billstoggery.com
The annals of history are replete with luminaries. There is Leonardo da Vinci, who invented the technique of holding a piece of bread in one hand while eating spaghetti. There is Madame Clicquot, who spared aristocrats untold amounts of pain and suffering upon figuring out how to make clear Champagne. There is Henry Ford, who gave rednecks something they could vehemently prefer over Chevrolet. And can you imagine living in a world without the Super Soaker? Thanks to Lonnie Johnson, you don’t have to.
But if you combined all these innovators’ brilliance and multiplied it by a thousand, you still wouldn’t have one one-billionth of Matt Rosen’s genius.
Upon retiring from the U.S. Army after 23 years of service, Matt dedicated absolutely none of his military experience toward a singular pursuit: developing the perfect shortbread cookie. You may recall the fateful day when he finally did it. A quintuple rainbow arose over Eden Prairie, and all the birds in the sky began singing out the names of baking ingredients in perfect unison.
Never content to rest on his laurels, Matt looked at the only thing that is arguably almost as good as shortbread cookies
– beer – and asked himself how he might combine the two. After countless hours of intensive research (many of which involved drinking beer), Matt devised an elegant solution. What if he added beer and beer ingredients … to shortbread cookie dough?
“Dave, you always make me out to sound smarter than I actually am whenever you write an article about me,” said Matt, with admirable humility. “Truth is, I’ve always been a big fan of craft beer, and even dabbled in homebrewing prior to picking up baking. I also enjoy experimenting with unique flavors of shortbreads, which is what led to the creation of my spicy peanut butter cookies. It was only a matter of time until those two passions overlapped.
“It all began when I started wondering what would happen if I added hops to my cookies. It’s the ingredient that gives beer its bitterness. If you’ve ever had an IPA, then you’re already familiar with hops’ pleasant, refreshing ‘bite.’ I soon discovered that hops create the perfect contrast to my shortbreads’ inherent sweetness. It’s a delicate teeter-totter of flavors that really fire up the taste buds!
“I also determined exactly how much craft beer I have to add to shortbread dough in order to elevate it to perfection. It’s surprisingly little: only two tablespoons per batch of around 60 cookies, and that minute amount of alcohol all evaporates in the oven. Fortunately, I already knew of an ideal use for leftover beer.”
Is Matt sourcing his hops from inferior states (i.e. ones that aren’t Minnesota)?
Perish the thought! The baker’s unrelenting commitment to unsurpassable quality compels him to exclusively bake with hops grown by Hardebeck Farms of Raymond.
“Keeping it as local as possible has always been important to me,” said Matt. “That’s also why I only use beer from nearby breweries, such as False Pattern pale ale by Modist Brewing.”
“Where can I try these impossibly delicious shortbreads?!” You’ve no doubt shouted this out several times already while reading this article. Be careful not to crumple the magazine in your fervor. It’s going to be a collector’s item someday.
But the answer to your question might surprise you. Unlike his blueberry lemon, toasted coconut, orange cranberry, cherry almond, and other inspired cookies, you cannot order Matt’s beer shortbreads direct to your home. You have to go to a participating local brewery!
“I’m proud to have partnered with several craft breweries across Minnesota,” said Matt. “You can now try my beer shortbreads at Bear Cave Brewing in Hopkins, as well as Hackamore Brewing in Chanhassen. My cookies are also available at Foxhole Brewhouse and Intuition Brewing – both in Willmar, which is near my hometown of Clara City.”
Will you try the hazy IPA shortbread flavored with lemon and lime? The brown ale, which is made with brown sugar caramel? The hefeweizen, with symphonic hints of banana and clove? Or will you perk up your senses with coffee stout, which features that all-important bean to morning commuters? No. You will try all four of Matt’s preposterously delectable beer shortbreads at the soonest possible opportunity. Cancel other plans if you have to. Nothing takes precedence over cookies – especially when they are accompanied by beer.
And lest you forget: whether you’re throwing a party, showing your clients that you love them, or simply in search of an epiphany, you can order any number of indescribably good gourmet shortbreads upon visiting sergeantshortbread.com
Have the ravages of Minnesota weather turned your windows into a real pane in the glass? Do your exterior doors look like they’re on the verge of making their final exit? Have salt and grit rendered your garage floor downright disheveled – a situation made no better by your garage’s utter lack of storage? Good. That means you have every opportunity to see the difference Window Outfitters and Garage Floor Outfitters make!
Why is Window Outfitters frequently hired to service homes on the National Register of Historic Places? Because their partnerships with four of the United States’ leading window manufacturers – ProVia, MonRay, Weather Shield and Marvin – mean they deliver any vinyl, wood, wood-clad, steel or fiberglass solution imaginable, including double hung, sliding, bay, bow and casement, as well as aluminum storm windows.
“We’re one of very few Platinum Dealers for ProVia in the Twin Cities, as well as the only local dealer with ProVia Certified Installers,” said Bob Davis, founder and CEO of Window Outfitters. “That means we’re trained to give our clients the absolute best value ProVia’s Amish-made quality can provide. But whichever brand you deem best for your property, you can rest assured our team of over 20 expert installers will make your upcoming home improvement project a total success.”
Entry doors that make great first impressions. Storm doors that repel the weather’s worst insults. French and sliding patio doors worthy of framing Eden Prairie’s most beautiful backyards. The business may be called Window Outfitters, but their mastery of exterior doors is unrivaled.
“Our doors aren’t just durable, secure and energy efficient,” said Bob. “Our wide selection of top-of-theline vinyl, steel, fiberglass, wood and wood-clad doors also lets us match any aesthetic vision and complement any style of architecture. Whether you want authentic or simulated oak, cherry, mahogany, knotty alder or fir, we’ll make sure you love the way your new door looks.”
Abrasion and corrosion are natural enemies of garage floors. Most concrete resurfacing contractors attempt to undo the damage with a hybrid or epoxy, which looks good at first but deteriorates over time – and discolors when exposed to natural sunlight.
“Garage Floor Outfitters uses Slide-Lok’s pure Polyaspartic treatment,” said Bob. “It cures quickly and is rugged enough to withstand a lifetime of use and abuse. Our coating is so tough that we often use it to resurface the floors at commercial garages and manufacturing facilities. And because it’s available in many colors, our clients can finally have garage floors that complement the cars they park on them.”
Ready to revolutionize the way you use your garage or other storage spaces? Garage Floor Outfitters’ custom-designed cabinet systems and slat walls will let you fully customize the way you stow.
“Our computer-aided design process yields custom cabinets that are just as suitable for garages as they are laundry rooms and utility rooms,” said Bob. “Just choose the style, color and size, and then let our team take care of the rest.”
“Detailed proposals, high-quality craftsmanship, punctuality, and above all else courtesy: these are inseparable from the excellent customer service we’ve built our name on,” said Bob. “They’re also the reasons why we have received the Angie’s List Super Service Award, the GuildQuality Guildmaster Award, and universally positive online reviews from our clients.”
Ready to revitalize your home? Go witness everything Window Outfitters and Garage Floor Outfitters have to offer at their full showroom at 12605 Creek View Avenue in Savage!

WINDOWS • GUTTERS • DEEP TRACK CLEANING • POWER WASHING
You would do anything to have clean windows – short of cleaning them yourself, of course. It’s hard work. It requires ladders, which are the leading cause of ladder-related injuries. It also takes a lot of time that you could have spent doing something you enjoy more, such as anything else.
If only there were a way you could have crystal-clear windows without doing one iota of work. You wish there were an earnest, hard-working and local professional you could hire to clean every window in your house, inside and out – and, better yet, clean out your window tracks, clear out your gutters, and pressure wash your house, too. A true Minnesotan-for-hire. Maybe that way you’d be able to focus on what really matters in life: friends, family, and Eden Prairie Lifestyle
What you are about to read next will change your life. That professional already exists. His name is Adam Frazier, and his business Pane Masters is at your service.
“Everyone likes someone who works hard and does a great job,” said Adam. “That’s the greatest lesson my dad ever taught me, and he started teaching it to me young. I began helping him paint houses as soon as I was big enough to carry a one-gallon bucket.
“I started working as a professional window cleaner long before going into business for myself. Working for someone else … well, what can I say? It was frustrating. I just didn’t have the freedom to go above and beyond for our customers. I’m a perfectionist, and I couldn’t stand doing work that didn’t meet my personal standards.
“I founded Pane Masters in 2018, though I didn’t really get it going until the following year. The year after that? Well, it set me back a bit, but things have been going great since then. I owe it all to repeat business, and the most powerful form of advertising there is: word of mouth.
“Now I get to spend every day running my business the way it’s supposed to be run. Complimentary screen cleaning, because no window is clean unless its screen is too. Opening every window so I can wipe down its sill, by the same logic. Working around my customers’ schedules, and making time for emergency cleans. Are you having a house party, and only just realized your windows are embarrassing? I’ll be there right away, and I can power wash your entire exterior while I’m at it.
“Skill and the right tools make all the difference. I can do a one-story house without storm windows in an hour and a half. Threestory house, with storm windows: about six to eight hours. If a window hasn’t been touched in 20 years, I can clean it like new in under 20 minutes. There aren’t many windows I can’t
reach with my ladder, which I prefer using because it lets me get up close and personal. There are no windows I can’t reach with my 60-foot water-fed pole system, which scrubs and rinses glass spotless.
“At the rate this business is growing, I expect I’ll have to hire employees sometime soon. I won’t start neglecting my duties as the boss when that day comes, though. When you call Pane Masters, you’re guaranteed an estimate by yours truly. I’d prefer to meet face to face so we can form a personal connection – too rare a thing nowadays – but I’m just as happy to walk around your home’s exterior in your absence. Either way, I’ll make sure you receive a full, honest estimate for whichever services you request.
“At the end of the day, only a certain kind of person can enjoy this line of work. You’ve got to love nothing more than standing back and appreciating a job well done.”

But if you belong to one of the more venerable generations, then you would probably rather spend the bulk of your retirement among your peers. They tell better jokes. They like better music. They can hold conversation without checking their phones every 12 seconds, too.
You don’t intend to spend your vintage years cloistered among your cohorts, though. You want to remain an active member of your community regardless of your age – in a bright, comfortable home you’ll proudly invite all your friends and loved ones to.
That community awaits at Riley Crossing Senior Living. The Chanhassen retirement community offers 55+ townhomes, independent living, assisted living, memory care and enhanced care that make aging in place just as convenient as it is enjoyable. Their focus is pure: to support every generation by providing the dedicated care, resources and friendship seniors are owed.
Riley Crossing’s private quarters are replete with every amenity one would expect of a swank flat. What makes it truly special are the spaces everyone shares. There are fitness classes where residents reach new pinnacles of strength and balance. There are educational programs where they learn everything from pottery to the history of Scotland. There are book clubs, movie nights, happy hours, religious services, multiple patios, and informal yet intense contests of skill on the putting green. And when residents desire travel to any of the Twin Cities’ entertainment destinations, the shuttle is ready and waiting.
“Riley Crossing is a place to thrive,” said Kirk Goetz, corporate marketing consultant for Ebenezer, Minnesota’s largest senior living management firm. “Our residents often join us after spending long periods in isolation. The upgrade to their social lives is so tremendous that it can be overwhelming at first. But once they’ve embraced the new, welcoming community surrounding them, they’re living their best lives.”
“Compassion. Integrity. Acceptance. Our team members all share these same values,” said Taryn Bartz, executive director of Riley Crossing. “Whether they’re teaching a music class, preparing another gourmet dinner, or maintaining the walking paths that connect our nine-acre campus to Lake Susan and Rice Marsh Lake, they all take pride in creating exactly the kind of home they themselves would like to live in one day.”
Many of Riley Crossing’s faces belong to people who were born during the ‘20s – past and present. The attached daycare welcomes infants, toddlers and preschoolers to grow and learn together, as well as form friendships with their neighbors next door.
“We are one of very few senior living communities with intergenerational programming,” said Shelley Brady, director of sales and outreach for Ebenezer. “The children regularly come over to spend quality time with their ‘grandfriends.’ They play games together. They do arts and crafts projects together. They read stories together. They garden together. They even go on little outings together. It’s the darlingest thing to see.
“The children aren’t the only ones who benefit from these relationships. Sharing their love and wisdom with the youngest members of their community gives many of our residents a strong sense of purpose. Grandfriends who once parented or taught young children may regain a part of themselves they formerly thought they had lost. Some of them may have difficulty remembering things at times, but they take heart knowing they are creating new, beautiful memories that will be cherished for decades to come.”
With living arrangements ranging from 55+ townhomes to enhanced care, Riley Crossing offers the perfect home where anyone can age in place. Please visit rileycrossing.com to learn more about their services, amenities, wellness programs and available apartments.

Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.

If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)

Practice your short game every day.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
