“I never eat December snowflakes. I always wait until January.”
Dear Santa,
It’s me – John Lee, publisher of Eden Prairie Lifestyle. Sorry for not having written to you in … what, like, 35, 40 years? I don’t remember precisely why, but I recall my priorities drastically changing when I reached middle school.
Listen. I know you’re probably hard at work making Nintendos and iPhones at the moment. (I’ve always admired your blatant disregard for copyright law.) But if you could find it in your heart to work one of those Christmas miracles you’re so famous for … well, gosh sir, I can’t tell you how much I’d appreciate it.
You see, there’s this little town I know and love called “Eden Prairie.” I’m sure you’re already acquainted with the insides of its chimneys, but mister, I’m sorry to say that you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting its people yet. They’re a good, decent and generous lot. Saints, each and every last one of them.
And that’s why I’m so concerned.
It pains me to say this, but the people of Eden Prairie are in the throes of a crisis. They’re usually in full holiday spirit by this time of year. But right now, they’re only in 99.99 percent holiday spirit. That’s a horrifying incompleteness of holiday spirit!
Santa, here’s all I ask of you: Help me publish the perfect issue of Eden Prairie Lifestyle. If I compellingly inform enough people about the great local businesses and nonprofit organizations around town, I just know it will make them feel one one-hundredth of one percent more festive.
Please, Santa? Won’t you make this humble regional magazine publisher’s dream come true? (You do still owe me for that DOA hamster fiasco back when I was 6 years old, by the way.)
And Santa, so long as I’m making requests, I have one more: Help me thank all of Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sponsors, without whose generous support we could not mail our magazine directly to readers’ homes.
Best regards,
JOHN LEE, PUBLISHER @EDEN_PRAIRIE_LIFESTYLE

Puppies Galore in 2024
First, create a perfect little angel (also known as a puppy). Next, fill that puppy’s head with good ideas until they become a helpful dog Finally, give that life-changing companion away to a person with a disability, or a veteran or first responder with PTSD.
Repeat this process hundreds more times over the course of 36 years. Congrats! You have now matched the good Helping Paws has done for the world.
It costs Helping Paws $35,000 to raise a single assistance dog. After this year’s Tail Waggin' Dinner, which welcomed around 475 guests to the McNamara Alumni Center on September 28th, the Eden Prairie nonprofit can afford to change eight more lives.
“It was our most successful Tail Waggin' Dinner to date,” said Jonathan Kramer, marketing manager for Helping Paws. “In addition to ticket sales, the plated dinner raised funds through live and silent auctions, as well as games like ‘drinko plinko’ and ‘scoop blitz.’
“I’m still in awe of our guests’ generosity. Every live auction winner immediately gave their prize to one of the volunteers who helps us raise dogs. Everyone in attendance was floored when one of our guests suddenly rose to commemorate her late friend by making a speech and $10,000 donation in their honor.
“Our theme this year was ‘Puppies Galore in 2024.’ Members of our recent ‘Valentine’ and ‘Wonder’ litters were present to make puppy dog eyes at our guests. Let’s be honest: They alone deserve almost all the credit for the evening.” helpingpaws.org

“Less than two years ago, I had to wear a compression belt while playing golf. Sometimes I couldn’t finish a round because my back hurt so much I couldn’t even walk,” said Michael M. of Colchester, Vermont. “After the treatments, I can play 27 to 36 holes in a day with no issues. It’s just life changing for me. It’s given me some of my life back that I’ve been thrilled to have.”
“I was enduring so much pain in the beginning. I was in agony. Very, very seldom could I do anything where my knee didn’t kill me. It was horrible. I’d have to grab onto the railing just to get up the stairs,” said John D. of Fall River, Massachusetts. “I’m about five or six months into the program, and now I have very, very little pain. And it’s getting better with every single passing month. I’d recommend this to anybody.”
“I was having terrible pain in my right thumb, to a point where I realized ‘Boy, you need your thumb and your index finger to do almost everything.’ I could not turn the key in the car. I was unable to hold a pen. I had to tell the credit union why the signature on my check looked so different,” said Maureen B. of Tamarack, Florida. “I was told I would need surgery – but at the age of 89, that was
also the last thing I wanted. So I started with QC Kinetix in May. By July, I was amazed at how I can do anything with this thumb now. I have no more pain at all.”
QC Kinetix was founded in Charleston, South Carolina in 2017. Today, there are over 197 QC Kinetix clinics in 35 states. More than 600 patients have been treated at the Twin Cities’ five locations during the past two years alone!
How has QC Kinetix grown so quickly? It’s simple: Regenerative medicine works. It concentrates the body’s natural and most potent healing agents around damaged soft tissues, including the cartilage surrounding joints. Patients may experience reduced pain and increased mobility in a matter of weeks – and sometimes even days.
Grandmothers who hope to keep up with their grandchildren. Hands-on professionals who hope to get back to work. Athletes who hope to overcome injuries. None of them want to go under the knife. None of them want a long recovery period. None of them want to rely on pain medications. All of them can benefit from life-altering treatment by QC Kinetix.
“Each treatment we offer shares the same goal,” said Josh Means, who owns all five QC Kinetix Twin Cities clinics alongside his wife Pam. “If arthritis, degenerative joint disease, overuse syndrome, or a sports injury is holding you back, then we’re here to show you the path forward. Don’t let pain stop you from doing what you love, or what you have to do to provide for your family. QC Kinetix can help!”

“The Eden Prairie Chamber is wrapping up yet another successful year,” said Pat MulQueeny, president. “We welcomed more members. We started more programs. We provided more leadership, advocacy and growth opportunities, too. And as always, our annual events fostered stronger connections between the Chamber and the community it has proudly served since 1969.
“We’re still feeling triumphant after this year’s Eatin’ Prairie Burger Battle, which had a direct economic impact to the tune of $20,000. Along with First Western Bank & Trust and many great local restaurants, we look forward to bringing the Burger Battle back again this September.
“In the meantime, I hope you’ll join us at the State of the City Luncheon this January, where prominent representatives of the city, school district and business community will share their visions for what’s next in Eden Prairie. And if you’ve already got home projects on your mind, then you’ll be happy to hear the Everything Spring Expo is returning to Grace Church this March. Come to the expo to meet awesome local vendors – or just to pet the awesome baby goats.
“Moving into 2025, the Chamber will intensify our focus on cultivating
a strong workforce. That’s why we’re pleased to announce Leadership Eden Prairie. Participants in the new program will receive professional leadership and management coaching over the course of nine months, and also become more familiar with Eden Prairie’s major industry sectors. This will be a real, hands-on experience that will help local workers and their employers both excel.
“Everything we do is in service of creating better opportunities for local businesses. Unfortunately, the Chamber’s 501(c)(6) status makes it ineligible to receive many government and private grants that would greatly benefit our community. After studying the success of other chambers’ 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, we decided to start our own: the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce Foundation , which will begin funding additional employee training and education programs in 2025. These programs will help counteract the ongoing shortage of skilled workers affecting local and national industry alike. The Foundation will also give our members the option of making tax-deductible contributions to initiatives which directly benefit our local economy.
“We’ve just begun moving forward with a new membership model, which we expect to fully implement within three years. It will offer five tiers that let members maximize the benefits and services they receive from the Chamber. These tiers are Classic, which essentially functions as a base membership; Market, which is a great fit for members who don’t have time to attend our programs; Growth, which will reward larger, more influential businesses for engaging with our mission; Leader, which comes with an invitation to join our board of advisors, and is available to companies with multiple locations throughout Eden Prairie; and Stakeholder, which entitles the member to gift a Chamber membership to any charity of their choosing, play a special role in our Leadership Eden Prairie program, display special signage indicating their commitment to hiring locally, and many other perks befitting of a major player in our local economy.
“Some of our efforts are small, like hosting one-off events that are as much about networking as they are about making real connections. Others have far-reaching effects on our community, like our round table industry focus discussions which help elected officials understand what local businesses really need to succeed. But regardless of its scope, each effort is geared toward the same goal: building a city the next generation will be fortunate to inherit.
“Our members, whose dues and participation are central to propelling our agenda forward. Our board of directors and volunteers, who have taken community involvement to the next level. The school district and the city, whose enthusiastic support is so immensely valuable. Our own staff, including the inestimably talented Kirsten Barott, Lori Brown and Grace Leapaldt. I thank them all for paving the way to a better tomorrow. Let’s make 2025 one for the record books, together!”

On Saturday, October 5th, Summit Orthopedics hosted their annual One World Surgery Gala at the InterContinental Minneapolis. More than 550 guests attended to celebrate and raise funds for the orthopedic care provider’s philanthropic mission, which is presently active in Honduras and the Dominican Republic.
“Dr. Peter Daly, who is one of Summit Orthopedics’ surgeons, saw a pressing need for orthopedic care in Honduras while volunteering at a children’s home there in 2003,” said Shannon Sotomayor, communications manager for One World Surgery. “We opened a surgery center there after some years of planning. Our doctors have consulted over 118,000 patients and performed more than 12,500 life-changing surgeries since 2009. And with the grand opening of our second clinic last September – the Dominican Republic’s first-ever ambulatory surgery center – we are now looking forward to making an even greater impact.”
The One World Surgery Gala featured guest speaker Miriam Garcia, quality and education manager for the Honduras clinic, who shared her touching account of breaking barriers as a wife, mother, and professional in her home country. Several other speakers shared their experiences serving residents of developing nations – many of whom would have died or remained permanently disabled were it not for One World Surgery’s timely intervention.
This year’s gala raised just over $750,000 through ticket sales, live and silent auctions, and the ever popular coffee-and-wine wheel. Summit Orthopedics offers their profuse thanks to everyone who attended, and welcomes all to next year’s gala!

Nobody wants to house shop in December. There are too many memories to create and remember. Too many hams to bake. Too many flights to take. Too many pines to festoon with lights. Too little daytime; too many long nights.
But January, and February too, for that matter? They matter. They’re when the real estate market is slowest. They’re when buyer demand is the lowest. They’re when sellers are most motivated to sell. They’re when Realtors and movers are most available as well.
In fact, if you act now – shortly after this magazine materialized in your mailbox, to be
specific – then you’ll be terrific. All of your ducks will be lined up in a row so you can close on your new home before the last snow. To get started, there is only one thing you must do: Visit First Western Bank to meet Laura Dwyer.
Why her?
“Home loans aren’t taught in school,” said Laura. “I couldn’t make heads or tails of my first mortgage, and that was after I’d earned my degree in business management. It wasn’t until I began working with home mortgages in a professional capacity that I began understanding their finer points.
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
“And there are a lot of finer points. So many that you could spend over two decades mastering them all – which I have. I’m now using that knowledge to make sure First Western clients exclusively receive the best home loans for their unique needs.
“People may not associate the job title ‘mortgage banker’ with excitement, but I beg to differ. I save people from following predatory and inexperienced loan originators’ advice. I help first-time homebuyers leverage tools and programs that let them access more of their equity, pay less of a down payment on their loans, and potentially avoid having to purchase private mortgage insurance. I’m even teaching finance to kids who are fresh out of high school and college during regular webinars. I’m fortunate to have learned so much about a subject that can help so many!
“I’m also fortunate to work with First Western. Our neighborhood bank treats clients as people – not numbers – which is why we’re able to look beyond their credit scores and recognize their true value as borrowers. Our exhaustive knowledge of the Twin Cities real estate market lets us recognize opportunities that out-of-state banks would never have underwritten. And because we underwrite, process and service loans under one roof, we deliver results quickly so our clients never miss a closing.
“Borrowing from First Western can save you enormous amounts of time and stress if you ever have to file an insurance claim. First Western will never leave you scrambling to figure out which financial institution to contact in the wake of a fire or hailstorm. Because we are a local servicer, our clients can choose to have their loans stay right here in their community. When they need help, they call and I answer.”
Whether you’re refinancing your current home – or purchasing a second home anywhere in the country – Laura is here to secure your best terms. Call (952) 516-7300 today to schedule a consultation at 100 Prairie Center Drive in Eden Prairie! firstwestern.bank

PREPARED FOODS YOU WON’T BE PREPARED FOR
Middling coleslaw. Lackluster lasagna. Soup that doesn’t evoke strong emotions. A single one of these bland foodstuffs can ruin your day. And heaven forbid if you serve any of them
And like anyone else who eats, we understand that fresh, quality ingredients are half the battle.”
“The other half is the recipe itself,” added Mary Anne Kowalski, owner.
"WE’RE NOT EXPERT CHEFS OR HIGH-CALIBER
WE JUST … EAT!"
to your guests around Christmastime. Your Great-Granny Gertie would be mortified if your Christmas salsa failed to stir the senses . If only there were some way to invite every home chef in America to a single potluck, take home all their most inspired dishes, and enjoy them at your leisure … wait! That would actually be a lot like shopping at Kowalski’s Markets. The main difference is that one is an impossible hypothetical scenario, whereas the other is a family-owned grocery chain exclusively serving our Twin Cities, with a location right here in town.
“We’re not expert chefs or high-caliber foodies,” said Kris Kowalski Christiansen, CEO. “We just … eat!
“We’re small compared to the national and regional chains. We don’t do market research. We don’t hire chefs to come up with ideas, either. If we put our name on a baked good, deli item, or Grab & Go entrée, it’s only because we love it.”
“A great recipe can come from anywhere,” continued Kris. “Many of our signature items began as beloved family recipes; for example, we owe our ever-popular potato salad to my own Great-Aunt Nettie. Many more are invented by Rachael Perron, our inestimably talented culinary and branding director. Others originated as chance discoveries, like our almond cookies with brown butter frosting. I fell in love with them at a coffee shop in Montana. After listening to me attempt to describe them, Kristine Schaak and our baking team managed to create an exact copy.
“Sometimes we happen across a marvelous recipe totally by accident. Take Terri's Tuna Twist Salad, for example. Its creator, Terri Bennis – a close personal friend, who recently retired from the company after working here 30 years – didn’t think it was remotely special when she served it to me one day. She was being too modest, which is a classic Minnesotan trait. But it really and truly was awe-inspiring tuna salad, so I had our kitchen set right to work replicating it.
“At first Terri thought I was joking. When she realized I was serious, she started insisting it couldn’t be done. But now that it’s one of our top sellers, Terri doesn't seem to mind taking credit too much.”
“WE’RE NUMBER TWO!”
“Our grocery store deli was voted second best in the 2024 USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Awards,” said Mary Anne. “We feel that is an enormous achievement in light of our smaller size. The average number of locations for an honoree in that list is 207. We have 11. We were also recently named fourth best foodservice retailer in the nation by Supermarket News.
“Maybe I’m not being modest enough, but I think we really deserved those accolades. We put so much time, energy and research into everything we serve at our deli. We know and vouch for every ingredient that goes into one of our recipes, too. And because we can’t prepare many of our items in-house, we have several local partners who help us live up to our exceedingly high standards.”
“Those standards are why Kowalski’s will always remain a uniquely Twin Cities affair,” said Kris. “We have spent decades fostering close relationships with our vendors. The thought of doing it all over again in a different market … well, it just doesn’t occur to us, which puts expansion totally out of the question. For now and forever, Kowalski’s will stand for the best groceries and prepared foods in the Twin Cities and the Twin Cities only!”
Don’t alienate your friends and family by serving them anything less than nonpareil goodies this holiday season. Don’t mistreat yourself, either. The food, flower and gift shopping experience you so rightly deserve awaits at 16500 W 78th Street in Eden Prairie. kowalskis.com

COMPASSIONATE HEALTH CARE FOR WOMEN OF EVERY SIZE
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
Judgment. Patronization. Knowing that their very real symptoms might be dismissed entirely. Concerns like these deter countless clinically obese women from seeing the doctor. It’s one of many reasons why they are at higher risk of abnormal bleeding, infertility, incontinence, liver disease, sleep apnea, and a host of other medical conditions.
Matthew T. Bigos, MD is determined to retire this terrible reality for good. The Premier Women's Health of MN - OBGYN West obstetrician-gynecologist, who sees patients at four clinics in Chaska, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Waconia, has not developed a weight loss program per se. Instead, Dr. Bigos has adapted a model of effective, compassionate care to the unique needs of more than onethird of women in the United States.
“I joined OBGYN West because I fully support its mission,” said Dr. Bigos. “That includes providing comprehensive care to all women, regardless of whomever they happen to be, in an open and caring environment.
“Around five years ago, I came to a realization. Too many of our patients were being referred to bariatric clinics –reputable treatment centers in their own right, but not ones that emphasize general wellness. I did not like seeing those patients distanced from the primary care physicians who already understood not just their preexisting conditions, but who they are as people.
“That’s why I developed a new approach to weight management that can be practiced alongside regular care. The program, which is fully in line with American Medical Association standards, is centered around three pillars: diet, exercise, and medication.
CONTINUED >
“...providing comprehensive care to all women, regardless of whomever they happen to be, in an open and caring environment.”
“Creating a healthy diet isn’t as simple as picking out a meal plan. It requires the physician to help their patient understand their oneof-a-kind relationship with food. Once I share those insights with my patient, we are ready to co-develop a personal dietary plan that is just as sustainable as it is practical. All of their food will still come from the grocery store.
“I don’t instruct my patient to go to the gym or follow some strict exercise regimen. All I really ask is that they exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. And I use the word ‘exercise’ loosely. Research shows that no single form of physical activity has greater health benefits than any other. It doesn’t matter if it’s yoga, pickleball, or a walk around the block. It’s great so long as you enjoy it and it gets your heart moving.
“Finally, there is the medication element of the program. I may prescribe Saxenda, Wegovy, Zepbound, or any other FDA approved medication so long as it aligns with my patient’s weight loss goal and medical history. If a patient has thyroid disease, hypertension, PCOS, or some other preexisting condition, then I make certain their prescription promises the least possible interference with their existing care.”
- Matthew T. Bigos, MD
“Women can struggle with their weight for any number of reasons,” said Dr. Jennifer Smolinski, another OBGYN West clinician (who also happens to be Dr. Bigos’ wife). “Menopause, pregnancy, and virtually any other hormonal or metabolic changes can cause weight gain. It’s typically the symptom my patients are most concerned about, which is why I refer many of them to my husband. His program truly helps women regain their ability to lose weight through the powers of empathy, shared decision making, and shared goals.”
“This program is successful even when weight loss is moderate,” continued Dr. Bigos. “Reduction as low as five percent is almost always accompanied by improved blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It also lessens symptoms of fatty liver, reduces diabetic dependence on insulin, and helps women with PCOS ovulate on a more regular basis. Just one of those outcomes can change any woman’s life for the better: every OBGYN West physician's ultimate goal.”

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HANDYMAN CONNECTION’S LOWEST RATES OF THE YEAR
Reader, please indulge me for a moment. Without putting down this very special edition of Eden Prairie Lifestyle, go and take a look at your deck.
At first glance, your deck floods you with many heartwarming deck-related memories. That time when you grilled your favorite food for your favorite friends and/or family. That time when your favorite dog did some very funny and memorable thing. That time your favorite child informed you they were simultaneously accepted to Harvard Law and Stanford Medicine. A panoply of perfect little moments, played out on the theater that is your deck.
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
But the rosy glow of nostalgia soon fades as the plump haunches of reality begin nestling into view. All your deck’s many imperfections start popping out. Loose railings. Bouncy boards. Deteriorating posts. Rotting, warping, fading, and the faint rumble of munching termites.
My goodness! Reader! Human eyes aren’t meant to witness such horrors. Retreat from your deck at once. Pour yourself a stiff chamomile tea to calm your nerves. Once your heart rate has slowed to at least 120 beats per minute, you’ll be ready for the good news.
It doesn’t matter if your current deck is a splintery nightmare or nonexistent. Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie is standing by to design and install the deck of your dreams! The locally owned company employs expert deck builders, who will almost instantly apprehend the composite or pressure-treated lumber deck you envision and then make it material in a matter of days.
How does Handyman Connection build gorgeous and long-lasting decks so quickly? Quality materials, superior craftsmanship, tons of experience, and designs which fully accommodate seasonal temperature fluctuations, of course – but also a technique so secret that it can only be mentioned in magazine articles no one will read. Handyman Connection utilizes revolutionary Diamond Pier footings which install in a matter of minutes: no digging, messy concrete or minimum temperature required. No other footing provides better structural stability than a Diamond Pier. Frost heaves can’t budge it!
That’s right! And it gets even better. “Winter is our slowest season by far,” explained Nate Bruen, owner of Eden Prairie’s very own Handyman Connection. “And if you know anything about economics, then you already know what lower demand means: lower prices. Our rates are generally 5 to 15 percent lower from December until February. By acting now, you can save a bundle on that big kitchen or bathroom remodel you’ve been putting off for so long. And if you’d like to come home from winter vacation to discover an awesome new deck in your backyard, now’s the time to call!”
Outstanding quality is great, but it’s not 4.5 stars on Google great. Handyman Connection could not have earned so many southwest metro homeowners’ acclaim were it not for their seamless communication.
“Are you currently budgeting for an upcoming home improvement project?” asked Nate. “Just text or email us some photos, along with what you have in mind, and we’ll respond right away with a pretty accurate estimate. We can provide a definitive proposal if you’d care to meet at your home, and we can also set up a Zoom meeting if you can’t take so much time away from your busy schedule.
“Our commitment to communication doesn’t end with same-day pricing. From the onset of your project until long after its completion, we’ll always be available to answer any questions or address any concerns you might have. We know how frustrating it can be to never hear back from your contractor. Simply put, we’re just not that kind of contractor!”

In the heart of Eden Prairie, you’ll find All About Children Pediatrics. A place where you can park right outside and be welcomed by friendly familiar faces. Here you find a nurturing environment designed with children in mind.
The pediatric lobby exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere, filled with vibrant colors and playful decor. Children are greeted by friendly and familiar staff members, making them feel at ease. This cheerful environment creates a comforting space making the experience as pleasant as possible.
Adding to the charm of the clinic, the beloved mascot named Izzy is playfully hidden throughout, cleverly concealed in 54 spots on the walls. Children embark on a fun scavenger hunt to find Izzy, a
friendly character that sparks their curiosity and adds an element of adventure to their visit. Parents often join the search, creating a shared moment of joy that lightens the atmosphere.
Founded in April 2000 by Marilou Pederson, a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with over five decades of experience along with a couple partners, says “All About Children was created to be a place where children feel safe and valued. We envisioned a clinic where children wouldn’t fear their visits, where everyone knows their name, and where parents trust the care as much as they did when they were kids themselves,” Marilou recalls with pride. “As we approach our 25th anniversary, that vision has blossomed into reality.”
Dr. Singewald, a board-certified pediatrician who joined us in 2021, is deeply rooted in the Eden Prairie community, where she both lives and works. With her own children attending school in the area, she takes great pride in caring for local families and building connections with friends and neighbors. Her passion for pediatric care is evident as she fosters a welcoming environment, making each visit feel personal and comfortable.
Dr. Wengler brings decades of experience to the practice, having worked in both small, community clinics and larger healthcare facilities throughout her long career. It is this cozy pediatric office she holds dear. She appreciates the close relationships she forms with families and the personalized care she provides. For Dr. Wengler, this clinic embodies compassionate medicine, where every patient feels valued.
Amanda Flannery, a dedicated nurse practitioner, has been a cherished part of the All About Children staff for over a decade. Amanda’s deep understanding of the clinic’s values and her commitment to fostering a nurturing environment make her beloved among families. Amanda ensures every child she sees feels cared for and listened to during their visit with her.

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
"A lot of Santa portrayers say they started out when they answered a spiritual calling," said Santa Steve of the North. "But for me, putting on the red suit for the first time was a financial decision. I was a young father working as a printing press operator back in 1985, and I needed a little extra part-time work that would help me pay for Christmas. I saw an ad hiring Santas to appear at various locations around the Twin Cities. I thought that would fit nicely with my community theater background, so I gave them a call and got hired.
"Santa school was seven days of intensive training. I still have the manual: 'Be on time; be dependable; be friendly; dress neatly; the parents are always right.' With that, a little padding, a very warm suit and a false beard, I was ready to start visiting homes and taking Polaroid photos with children at a local shopping mall.
"I remember one of my first home visits very well. I was sitting on the couch with the whole family gathered around to pose for photos. I didn't know this while I was smiling for the camera, but a teenage girl was cradling her pet cat just over my head. The cat, startled by the flash bulb, decided to let out all of his frustration on me. He ripped off my hat and wig and scratched up my face until I was bleeding.
"All I could do at that point was remain calm. I didn't want to lose any more face than the cat had already taken from me. I got up, thanked them for letting me be part of their special day, and told them my manager would be in touch. It was disheartening, going from mall Santa to mauled Santa just like that, but I wound up finishing the season with the money I needed to give my 2-year-old son a good Christmas.
"That was the only year I worked with that service. I did portray Santa again at my own family Christmas party about 15 years later. Time must have made me
look more convincing, because even the kids who had seen me earlier that day had no idea who I was. They looked at the boots and the beard and the costume, and they were certain I must have been the real deal.
"I wouldn't portray Santa professionally again until 2009. By then I had grown my own beard, which only needed a little spray to whiten up the areas that hadn't turned snowy on their own yet. Better yet, my padding had become all-natural. I was a much better performer by then as well, having acted in community theater productions like Fiddler on the Roof, Anything Goes and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I had also played bass for several rock bands, and performed hundreds upon hundreds of magic shows for kids at festivals and fairs around Minnesota. My wife surprised me with a beautiful outfit from Twin Cities Magic & Costume. With that, I was all set to become Santa Steve of the North.
"I don't approach Santa like a typical acting gig. In my mind I am the modern incarnation of Saint Nicholas, which I convey through my own emotions and body language. Magic has also helped me portray the saint more convincingly. If a kid is skeptical about whether I'm really Santa, it's fairly easy to win them over once I've floated Rudolph's red nose around their head and snatched a chocolate gold coin from out of thin air.
"But I never lie. If a child directly asks whether I'm the real Santa, I just ask them back: 'Are you the real John?' Assuming their name happens to be John, that is.
"Promising gifts takes a certain amount of tact as well. When a child asks me for something specific (especially an expensive piece of technology), I tell them I can't make any promises but will be certain to bring them something they'll like. I'll only plant an expectation with the parent's approval, which they usually give as a little nod.
“It's fairly easy to win a skeptical kid over once I've floated Rudolph's red nose around their head and snatched a chocolate gold coin from out of thin air.”
"I also teach children about the equality of Santa's love. This philosophy means not boasting or bragging about their bounty to their friends at school, who may not share all the same advantages they enjoy. I encourage parents to accompany a costly gift with an inexpensive one. That way their kid can talk about it like it was the best thing they received, which can help prevent a lot of bitterness and envy from arising out of what really should be the most peaceful time of year. They often thank me for this advice.
"This job can really get to you sometimes if you're not careful about it. One time at the mall I met a little boy holding a toy truck. I said 'Oh, what a nice truck you have there!' The boy looked up with half a smile and handed his toy over to me. I admired it and proclaimed it to be the most wonderful truck ever to exist in the world. Then he finally spoke: 'I like you. I like Christmas.'
At this point I noticed the boy's mother had tears in her eyes. She explained to me that her son had autism, and this was the most he had spoken with another person in the last two years. I've performed for many groups centered around autism since then. They are all wonderful people.
"What do I love about being Santa? Well, I have to be honest. I'm not a wealthy man by any means. I spent my life working in the
printing industry, doing everything from handset type to web-fed printing presses to envelope-making machinery. I took great pride in that work, making certain to read everything I ever produced from front to back whether it was just a letterhead or a complete technical manual. As rewarding as I found that career, it wasn't very lucrative. Being Santa during Christmastime, on the other hand, is.
"But money is not the only reason I do this. Far from it. I also genuinely love being Santa. He's the only person in the world who is appreciated by everyone whether they're Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu. He always makes everyone happy. 'Look – here comes Santa Claus!' are the nicest words anyone can say to me.
"I'm looking forward to all my special appearances this season. I welcome anyone to reach out to me for public events, family gatherings and photo shoots. I can come with reindeer if you like. I'm also especially lucky to be joined by Debra Claus, who is an experienced singer and entertainer herself. She brings so much more to my visits, and is available for her own solo appearances as well."
Welcome Santa Steve and Debra Claus to your home or business this holiday season! Email santastevellc@gmail.com or call (612) 212-8167 to speak with the jolly old elf himself.
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
