Brawner Renovations helps you create gorgeous outdoor gathering spaces that invite all to enjoy.
ARTICLE BY WENDY EDWARDS
A deck is more than just an extension of the home - it’s a gathering place where cherished memories with family and friends are made. Whether it’s evenings by the fire pit, scrumptious meals from the grill, or a quiet cup of coffee, a beautiful deck provides the perfect backdrop for togetherness.
“That porch brought us so much joy as a family so we decided to start Brawner Renovations to give other families a space where they could make family memories as well.” Wesley Brawner
With Georgia’s temperate climate and open landscapes, outdoor living can be enjoyed nearly yearround. Wesley Brawner and the expert team at Brawner Renovations in Marietta know how to tailor your outdoor space to your taste, creating custom decks that elevate everyday living and enrich family life.
After long, tireless shifts as a firefighter, Wesley came to cherish family gatherings on his days off and decided to build the porch that his wife, Heather, had always dreamed of. Wesley remarks, “Once the porch was completed, the family was able to gather outside and have dinners and family time. Heather would spend her mornings having her coffee and quiet time before the
kids got up to head to school. That porch brought us so much joy as a family so we decided to start Brawner Renovations to give other families a space where they could make family memories as well.”
With residential and commercial licenses, Wesley brings extensive experience in building everything from decks and porches to outdoor kitchens and hardscapes, making Brawner Renovations a one-stop shop for enhancing outdoor living. He also believes partnering with trusted brands like TimberTech and Trex, which are quality products clients can rely on, is essential. Brawner Renovations has even earned the Trex Company Stellar Service Award for the Southeast five years in a row.
>
For many, visualizing the possibilities for their space can feel daunting and overwhelming. Brawner Renovations takes pride in guiding clients through the process, starting with a clear understanding of their goals. Then, they use advanced 3D software to create a plan that removes uncertainty. A visit to their showroom allows clients to pair quality materials with their 3D design, providing a complete picture before construction begins.
Whether it’s a modest covered porch or a grand entertaining space, Brawner Renovations approaches every project with the same level of care and commitment. Challenging undertakings are their forté, as proven with one particular venture in Big Canoe. Wesley states, “This client loved entertaining and cooking and wanted a large outdoor kitchen where they could host several people. Getting materials up on the mountain was very challenging at times but it didn’t stop us. We brought in large trucks with winches to help move materials up the mountain and we were able to build a large deck framed out of steel with Trex composite decking and railing. We designed and built a large outdoor kitchen with sinks, beverage centers, grills, stone pizza oven and a full bar. To accommodate wind driven storms, Brawner added vinyl drop down curtains and outdoor heaters to keep the party going when the weather wasn’t cooperating”.
Brawner Renovations combines the expertise and resources of a large firm with the attentive service of a small, dedicated company, bringing a personal touch that clients appreciate. Visit brawnerrenovations.com to connect to an amazing team of skilled professionals who will enhance your space for optimal enjoyment.
In 2006, husband-and-wife team Russell and Stephanie Ives merged their professional skill sets to found Custom Dwellings. Four kids and an impressive business venture later, the company is now one of Marietta’s only family-owned design-and-build firms. Each a master of their craft, the duo combines Stephanie’s architecture degree from Georgia Tech with Russell’s business management degree from Mercer to create a seamless blend of residential design and general contracting.
This unique pairing allows Custom Dwellings to keep every step of the design-and-build process in-house, giving them full control over quality, budget, and execution.
“And besides, it’s just more rewarding to see projects from the theoretical design stage all the way through to the finish line,” says Stephanie.
For Stephanie and Russell, “in-house” is more than just a business model—it reflects the hours of design talk and project planning that unfold under their own roof in Marietta. Working side by side has its challenges, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. Being close to home allows them to spend more time with their four children while celebrating professional victories and tackling setbacks together. The way they see it, even behindthe-scenes debates add value for their clients.
“We sometimes find ourselves ‘hashing out’ different perspectives on a job and hopefully save our clients from some of those unpleasant conversations with their spouse!” says Russell.
Whether you’re looking to completely revamp your space or simply elevate a corner of your home, Custom Dwellings walks with clients every step of the way. Each project begins with a conversation to discuss needs, budget, and expectations, while giving clients a chance to get to know Stephanie and Russell’s unique dynamic. If it feels like a fit, clients launch the Design process by signing the "Planning Agreement”; Step 1 is "Design Discovery" which includes project scope analysis, preliminary design drawings and projections of the total design fee and construction costs; Step 2 is "Schematic Design and Further Estimating". When ready, the client signs a “Letter of Intent” to move into Step 3 "Final Design and Project Build."
Concurrent to the development of final plans and product selections for construction, Custom Dwellings bids the project to their
trusted trade contractors and suppliers before finalizing costs.
The "Construction Phase" begins with an on-site meeting where the team reviews how everything will proceed. Regular check-ins ensure transparency and smooth communication throughout the process. Once construction is complete, the team conducts a final walkthrough with the client to ensure satisfaction—and to keep the door open for future projects.
For Dan and Claudia, the kitchen in their late-1970s contemporary East Cobb townhome simply wasn’t working. Buried deep in the lower level with no natural light, it didn’t meet their culinary needs or reflect their style. Years of raising children, pets, and the dreaded East Cobb pinhole plumbing leaks had taken their toll, so a full renovation was in order.
Inspired by the clients’ love of bright, airy spaces and clean Scandinavian lines, the new design features GE Café appliances in matte white with bronze pulls, paired with Omega cabinetry in quarter-sawn white oak and painted finishes. MSI Calacatta Laza Oro quartz counters and a full-height backsplash complete the look, while copper-toned accents tie everything together.
Beyond the kitchen, the renovation extends to the laundry and half bath for a cohesive aesthetic. Custom Dwellings reversed the laundry access to the stair hall and concealed the entry with tandem barn doors, carrying the herringbone detailing from the kitchen island into the space. Townhomes bring unique challenges as semi-attached units, but the team coordinated carefully to maintain plumbing and electrical service to adjoining residences. Working closely with Cobb County Building Department officials, the "Build Team" ensured code compliance and, most importantly, client satisfaction. The result is a thoughtfully crafted kitchen and lower level that blend beauty with function—spaces where everyday living feels extraordinary.
"From initial consultation to project completion, the Custom Dwellings Build Team (i.e. Russell, Rob, and Mike) consistently impressed us with their professionalism, expertise, dedication, and responsiveness every step of the way." - Dan and Claudia
For homeowners looking to refresh their living spaces, Custom Dwellings recommends working with an interior designer for small updates and turning to a full-service design-build team when bigger changes are needed.
“We sometimes find ourselves ‘hashing out’ different perspectives on a job and hopefully save our clients from some of those unpleasant conversations with their spouse!”
The firm has earned numerous accolades, including seven “Designs of Distinction” awards from the Georgia Chapter of the National Kitchen & Bath Association. Stephanie has also been named one of Atlanta’s Best Kitchen & Bath Designers by My Home Improvement Magazine and is the recipient of its “2025 Best Remodeling – Kitchens” award.
“This is where Custom Dwellings brings all the skills to the table. With Architectural and Interior Designers who are NKBA credentialed specialists in Kitchen & Bath design on our Design Team and Professional Project Managers on our Build Team we provide a complete design/build solution for our clients.”

No matter your palate’s persuasion—whether you crave the smoky embrace of slow-cooked barbecue, the delicate artistry of handcrafted pastries, or the fiery thrill of global spices—one thing is certain: everyone is a foodie at heart. And there may be no better place to indulge that truth than at the Georgia Food + Wine Festival, returning this spring with a three-day celebration of flavors, craft, and community.
The Festival - held at Jim Miller Park - is more than a showcase of incredible dishes, drinks, and celebration of community—it’s a gathering of stories, talents, and traditions that unite around the shared table. From street food favorites to gourmet masterpieces, every bite tells a story, and every sip raises a glass to Georgia’s growing culinary reputation.
The festival owes much of its success to JRM Management, who helped bring the vision to life after seeing an opportunity to create a statewide celebration of food, wine, and spirits. A partnership
with Georgia Grown, the festival’s presenting sponsor, was pivotal in shaping the event into what it is today. Missy Miller of JRM Management explains, “We have been lucky enough to partner with Georgia Grown as our presenting sponsor the last few years. They bring so much to the table and are the perfect fit for this event.”
That partnership flourishes in the Georgia Grown Member Village, a curated marketplace of homegrown products ranging from decadent desserts and bold hot sauces to fresh farm produce and artisanal goods. Here, festival-goers can explore and invest in the best of Georgia’s local flavors and craftsmanship.
Sponsors also play a key role in shaping the experience, helping to bring the Festival to life in meaningful ways. Their support not only makes the event possible, but also enriches it by helping to ensure guests enjoy an unforgettable celebration of food, wine and community. Legendary spirits brand Beam Suntory returns, bringing both their portfolio of classics and inspiring new innovations. “We are excited to be a part of the Georgia Food + Wine Festival for the fifth year,” shares Krisie Dry, Senior Field Marketing Manager. “We look forward to the Best Whiskey Cocktail competition that brings out Atlanta’s top talent to create extraordinary cocktails.”
The flavors, however, go well beyond beverages. Chefs are the heartbeat of the festival, transforming ingredients into unforgettable experiences. Enter award-winning Chef Jernard Wells - nationally recognized chef, TV personality, best-selling author and long-time friend of the Festival. What Chef Jernard loves most is the connection. Whether he’s cooking on television, writing a book that finds its way into someone’s kitchen, or standing in front of a live audience at the Georgia Food + Wine Festival, his goal is always the same—to inspire and bring people together through food. Each platform offers him a way to share not just recipes, but the stories, love, and culture behind them. To know he can reach someone in their living room, at their dinner table, or even in their own city and spark a moment of joy or togetherness—that’s the most rewarding part of it all.
For Chef Jernard food has always been bigger than the plate—it’s about culture, family, and creating spaces where people feel seen, loved, and celebrated. That’s why he’s so excited about opening his new upscale Southern brunch and dinner restaurant,
Cornbread & Butter, in Grayson, GA. "It’s a way for me to share not only the flavors I grew up with, but also the values of hospitality, togetherness, and joy that have shaped my life. Beyond recipes, I love sharing stories of resilience, love, and community with fans, because those are the things that truly connect us,” shares Chef Jernard. "Participating in national and regional culinary festivals is another extension of that—it gives me the chance to meet people face to face, hear their stories, and celebrate the richness of our shared food culture together. What I love most is that exchange of energy—when fans walk away inspired by me, I walk away just as inspired by them."
While Chef Jernard celebrates culture and connection through the comforts of Southern cuisine, Chef Alejandro Valdivia, widely known as the Adventure Chef, takes festival-goers on a wilder journey - infusing his cooking with the untamed spirit of the outdoors. What makes him so unique is the way he blurs the line between chef and outdoorsman — he hunts, fishes, forages, and then cooks what he finds, bringing truly wild flavors to the table. From rustic backwoods fire pits to immersive outdoor dining experiences, Alex has built a lifestyle and brand rooted in authenticity, culture, and respect for the land. His passion for cooking over open flames with fresh, wild ingredients creates food that tells a story and connects people in unforgettable ways. Looking ahead, his new project Chasing Wild Flavor and upcoming cookbook promise to share even more of his journey. “For me, food is about connection, culture, and
honoring where it really comes from. He invites us to follow along on his journey at @awildchef and be on the look out - as you just might see him on another TV show soon!
Friday Fired Up kicks things off with an all-inclusive evening of bold barbecue, fire-kissed flavors, craft beverages, and live music.
Saturday Savor invites guests to enjoy beverage samplings, chef demos, live entertainment, and shopping—complete with a souvenir glass and tasting tokens. A highlight is the Publix VIP Lounge, an elevated experience featuring air-conditioned comfort, acoustic music, hors d’oeuvres, and an open bar.
Sunday Family Day offers food trucks, kid-friendly activities, inflatables, and plenty of room for families to savor the fun together.
When you invest in the Georgia Food + Wine Festival, you’re doing more than enjoying delicious food and drink—you’re supporting local businesses, celebrating Georgia’s culinary talent, and contributing to community-based charities that uplift families and children in need. It’s a festival with heart where every ticket purchased makes a positive impact across the community.
So come hungry, leave inspired, and let your senses guide you through one of Georgia’s most anticipated celebrations.

A FESTIVAL OF COLOR, CULTURE AND COMMUNITY
ARTICLE BY REI KAISER
BY
On the second weekend of October, between 80,000 and 100,000 people flock to Marietta Square for its annual Chalktoberfest, which combines eccentric chalk art with eclectic craft beer and wine selections to support the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art (MCMA). Prior to its formation, one of the MCMA board members attended the Sarasota Int'l Chalk Festival in Sarasota, Florida, a fundraiser for the Avenida de Colores 501c3 Cultural Arts Organization. This festival brought in 350,000 people and raised approximately 2.5 million dollars for its organization. When she returned, the board member shared her experience with Sally Macaulay, the executive director of MCMA, and instantly, Macaulay was inspired.
The event started as part of Marietta’s Art in the Park on Labor Day weekend of 2012. Unfortunately, rain began to pour, and all the chalk creations were washed away, colors instantly dyeing the streets. As a result, Macaulay concluded that she was going to start her own event the following year. Originally established as strictly Marietta’s Chalk Festival, Macaulay sought funds from the board of Downtown Marietta to compensate the artists for their work. One of the board members asked, “If you’re giving all the money to the artists, how are you making money for the art museum?” Ultimately, she wasn’t. At the time, beer festivals were starting to pop up around the country, and Macaulay had the idea to combine the two. As a result, Chalktoberfest was born in 2015.
Nine years later, over 90 professional artists from all over the world and a Craft Beer Festival featuring 120 beers, seltzers, ciders, and 25 wines take over Marietta Square. This family-friendly event further expands to include food trucks, amateur chalk contests, arts and crafts vendors, a scavenger hunt for children, and live music. “I just love to see what the professional artists come up with every year,” Macaulay said. “There’s no theme this year, so submissions have been everything from Wicked to Old Master’s paintings.” Her favorite chalk creations, though? “The 3D pieces are so cool. We had a Georgia Bulldog two years ago that you could stand on, and it looked like you were in the air.”
While the underlying purpose of this event is to raise money for MCMA, its mission is to draw people together and build a community through the sharing of art. Macaulay said, “What is a better way to build community through art than to put it on the street?” The Festival is made possible through the generous support of sponsors, dedication of community leaders, and countless volunteers whose time and passion bring the beloved festival to life.
Since its establishment, Chalktoberfest has been honored as the Best Festival in Cobb County by Cobb Life Magazine in both 2016 and 2017, received the Mayor's Art Award from the City of Marietta and the Spot On Award for Best Event in Cobb County from Cobb Travel and Tourism, and has been named the Best Festival in Georgia by Georgia Business Journals for 2022 and 2023, and Best of Georgia Regional in 2024.
This event is rain or shine, but if it rains, Chalktoberfest has the “best rain plan out of anybody in the country.” Should rain be in the forecast, chalk artists protect the art. The second the first raindrop falls, Macaulay sounds a blowhorn to instigate the covering of the chalk art with the provided tarp, protecting and preventing color from dyeing the streets like in 2012. When the rain stops, artists immediately undo the tarp, roll it back up, and resume their creations.
This year, Chalktoberfest takes place the weekend of October 11th and 12th with the Craft Beer Festival happening on Saturday, October 11th from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and the community chalk competition occurring on Sunday, October 12th from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. While tickets must be purchased for the Craft Beer Festival, this community-building event is free to the public, allowing families to gather from all over and experience a unique and creative weekend unlike any other.
You're invited to purchase your tickets to the beer festival for $50 through the month of September and $55 at the door.

BRINGING YOU COUTURE DESIGNS, TIMELESS PIECES AND INDUSTRY EXPERTISE.
When Jamie Kresl entered the world of custom jewelry 35 years ago, he could never have imagined the path before him. From assisting in management, to becoming a leader in the industry, Jamie Kresl, sole-proprietor of Jewelry Artisans, located in Dunwoody, and his highly skilled team have become one of Atlanta's premier jewelers through skill, vision and an unabashed fervor for realizing every client’s dream. Just as a decadent dessert delights the senses, fine, custom jewelry uplifts the spirit and nourishes the soul.
With a start in the jewelry industry in High Point, North Carolina, Jamie gained valuable knowledge that would catapult him into the world of custom jewelry design, allowing him to utilize his creative prowess and unique style of personal connection. His architecture and psychology background would prove very useful in capturing exactly what the client has in mind while possessing the expertise to execute flawlessly.
CONTINUED >
Moving back to Atlanta, Jamie’s path to success began with managing Jewelry Artisans, which at the time was owned by the famed David Geller of D. Geller and Sons Jewelers. Jamie was running the store with David at the helm, when he realized his ultimate dream was to own a custom design studio. Jamie remembers, “We were out to dinner in Vegas and I said, ‘Dave, what’s your plan for the business?’ He said, ‘Why, do you want to buy it?’ I said, ‘I would love to talk to you about it.’ He said, ‘Well, that’s funny, because I was going to ask you if you wanted to buy it.’” It was almost as fate had been realized and the stars had aligned, when on January 1, 2000, Jamie purchased Jewelry Artisans, reaching his ultimate goal.
For over fifty years, Jewelry Artisans has built a trusted reputation for quality, precision, and design - with myriad offerings from one-of-a-kind heirlooms to stunning engagement rings and wedding bands. “From the sparkle of the ocean to the sparkle of this ring, Jewelry Artisans helped to make our engagement such a magical moment," shares Juan and Danielle. By employing world-renowned craftsmen, Jewelry Artisans has become the “go-to” destination for impossible projects and irreparable pieces. Under Jamie’s leadership, these strengths have firmly established Jewelry Artisans as an industry leader. “David Geller taught me to be a “yes man”, says Jamie. Jewelry Artisan’s prides themselves on being the go-to-professionals for just about anything jewelry-related and - based on experience - if it can be done, they can do it. "We have had the honor of many jewelry stores in Atlanta referring their clients to us when they are unable to assist”, Jamie continues.
To keep this enduring reputation, Jamie knows it is imperative to cultivate a team that brings unique talents and experiences from all over the globe showcasing unparalleled beauty, craftsmanship and customer satisfaction rarely seen in one place. Jamie reveals, “My present designer Beatriz has been with me for over 20 years and is the most delightful and talented designer." Our clients love her and sing her praises daily. For 22 and 12
years, I’ve worked alongside Bao and Minh, two talented jewelers whose Asian heritage reflects a deep-rooted tradition of craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. Their skill and dedication shine through in the way we serve our clients. The sales team brings deep knowledge and expertise to every client engagement, ensuring they receive exceptional guidance and service. Jamie’s son Aidan shares these sentiments and has recently joined the team, apprenticing under some of the industry’s finest jewelers to build a strong foundation for continuing this important Atlanta legacy.
As Jewelry Artisans commemorates serving Atlanta for over 50 years with a weeklong celebration featuring giveaways, custom design experiences, and an exclusive open house event on October 7 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Adding to the festivities, to mark Jamie's 25th year as owner, he's thanking clients and community for their trust and confidence offering 25% off a large selection of in-store jewelry and gemstones from October 7 through October 12. Be sure to RSVP to attend the Open House on October 7 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm by calling at 770-393-0321.
Valued customer Michael Drago shares, “Jewelry Artisans deserves more than 5 stars! Jamie and the entire team are simply phenomenal. From the moment you walk in, you’re met with warmth, professionalism, and a genuine passion for helping you find exactly what you’re looking for. Their collection is stunning—full of unique, high-quality pieces you won’t find anywhere else. What really sets them apart is the no-pressure, stressfree environment. They take the time to truly listen, offering expert guidance without ever pushing a sale. Their custom jewelry options are incredible, and the turnaround time was impressively fast”.

If you drive through Dillard, Georgia, a blinkand-you-miss-it town tucked into the folds of the Southern Appalachians, you might catch the scent before you spot the source. Sweet hickory smoke drifts over the road, pulling you toward a low-slung building with picnic tables out front and a hand-painted sign: Blue Hound Barbecue. Behind the pit, you’ll usually find Kyle Bryner. Locals call him Kyle. Food Network calls him the Master of ‘Cue.
The nickname “Mountain Man” came during the 10-week televised barbecue competition, where Bryner’s focus on Southern Appalachian flavors set him apart from a crowded field of nationally-acclaimed grill masters. Week after week, he leaned on the kind of food he knows best while tapping into his creativity: New Delhi Hot Chicken, Grilled Texas Quail over Creamed Corn, Blackberry Dumplings, a Sorghum Glazed Pork Tenderloin Sandwich, just to name a few.
“I just did what I always do,” Bryner says. “Good meat, good smoke, and letting the flavors speak for themselves.”
ARTICLE BY GRACIE WAYLOCK PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREEN OLIVE MEDIA
The competition threw every obstacle it could at him, including surprise ingredients, split-second decisions, timers that seemed to tick down twice as fast on camera. But Bryner stayed grounded. He credits that to lessons learned from his late father, who taught him that cooking wasn’t just about feeding people. It was about creating moments. “He taught me to slow down, and take pride in the details,” Bryner says. “Throughout the challenges, I would always lean on what I thought he'd do in the same situation.”
That sense of connection runs through Blue Hound Barbecue, which Bryner co-owns with his high school sweetheart, Erin. The place has a cult following in Rabun County and beyond, thanks to its commitment to preserving Appalachian culture and Kyle's involvement in the local community.
Winning Master of ‘Cue is, for Bryner, as much about the community as it is about the title. “This is a huge win for our little town,” he says. “It proves small-town barbecue belongs on the big stage.” He hosted a finale watch-party at Clayton Baptist Church, complete with a chili cook-off between him and his son Elijah, and a glimmering trophy reveal.
And he’s not slowing down. Bryner is already working toward his next project: a Southern Appalachian cookbook that will share the recipes, stories and traditions he’s spent years collecting. It will be part instruction manual, part love letter to the mountains. “It’s not just recipes,” he explains. “It’s Appalachian history. It’s where the food comes from, and a tribute to the people who taught me to make it.”
The national spotlight might be new, but the man behind the smoker hasn’t changed. Most mornings, you’ll still find him tending the fire before the sun clears the ridge, keeping watch over the coals. And if you’re lucky enough to catch him there, he might hand you a plate and tell you a story – the kind that sticks with you long after the smoke has faded.
