The Ladies’ Issue

Bravery, Business, and Bonds—Honoring Eagan’s Women
As the warmth of spring settles in, so does our appreciation for the incredible women who make our community stronger, kinder, and more connected. This May, we are proud to dedicate our Ladies’ Issue to the inspiring women who lead, serve, and uplift those around them.

This month, we highlight the remarkable women of the Eagan Fire Department—courageous first responders who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe. Their commitment to service and teamwork is nothing short of inspiring, and we are honored to share their stories.
We also turn our focus to the power of connection and collaboration. A thriving local women’s networking group is creating meaningful opportunities for professional women to support each other, share resources, and grow together. Their dedication to fostering community and empowerment reminds us of the strength found in unity.
Additionally, we shine a light on several outstanding female business owners who bring innovation, passion, and resilience to the community. These women are not only building successful enterprises but also shaping the future of our local economy and inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs.
This issue is a celebration of women who make a difference—not just in the workplace, but in every aspect of our community. Their stories remind us of the importance of investing in one another, lifting each other up, and recognizing the invaluable contributions women make every day.
I hope you enjoy this issue as much as we loved putting it together. Thank you for being part of our Eagan City Lifestyle family and celebrating our community's incredible women with us.
As always, I would like to thank all of Eagan City Lifestyle’s sponsors. Their generous support enables us to get our magazine directly into our readers’ homes. Please don’t hesitate to contact me (eagan@citylifestyle.com) if you have a story to share or a business to recommend.

WOMEN FRONTLINES on the
Meet the Women of the Eagan Fire Department

ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER
When the alarm sounds in Eagan, a team of highly trained firefighters rushes into action, ready to handle whatever the day—or night—brings. Among them are three remarkable women who have turned their passion for service into a career: Assistant Chief Jessica Hoffman and firefighters Danielle Fasching and Natalie Holter. Their paths to the fire station may be different, but their purpose is the same—to help, to protect, and to make a difference when it matters most. From childhood inspirations to unexpected career shifts, each of them
found their way to firefighting through a unique journey, proving that courage and dedication know no gender.
A CALL TO SERVE
For Jessica, firefighting was always about making an impact. “I wanted a career where I could help people in crisis while serving my community,” she shares. With ten years at the Eagan Fire Department, she’s done just that, responding to everything from medical emergencies to car accidents and fire calls.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA CLINE & STEVE LUCAS

“Some calls stick with you. They remind you of your own loved ones. But knowing we’re making a difference— that’s what keeps us going.”
– Natalie Holter, Eagan Firefighter
Danielle grew up around the fire station, watching her father serve on the Plymouth Fire Department. “I got to help wash the trucks after they returned from a fire, and that was pretty awesome,” she recalls. “But what really stuck with me was knowing they were out there helping people.” Inspired by that, she followed in his footsteps. Natalie’s path took a different route. She originally considered nursing, but found herself drawn to the physical and mental challenge of fire service after discovering a fire science program in college. “I didn’t even realize this was a career option for women where I grew up,” she says. “Now, I love that we can be role models for future generations.”
CHALLENGES AND TRIUMPHS
Every job comes with its own set of challenges and victories, but firefighting takes those stakes to another level. The work is physically demanding, requiring strength, endurance, and the ability to push through exhaustion. The risk of injury is ever-present, whether from rushing into a burning building, lifting heavy equipment, or navigating hazardous conditions. Beyond the physical toll, there’s the emotional weight of the job— firefighters are often the first on the scene in life-or-death situations, witnessing trauma that can stay with them long after the call ends. Fatigue, stress, and the mental burden of responding to emergencies day after day are all part of the reality of the profession. Jessica emphasizes the unpredictability of the job. “We never know what the next call will bring, so we have to be prepared for anything.” That level of readiness requires constant training and an ability to think quickly under pressure.
For Danielle, physical strength was an initial concern. “I’m smaller, so I have to rely on teamwork and different techniques to get the job done,” she explains. “But adrenaline kicks in when you need it.” Firefighting isn’t about brute strength alone—it’s about strategy, communication, and working as a unit to get the job done safely and efficiently.
Natalie shares the emotional toll. “Some calls can be tough—ones that remind us of our own families. It can be hard to shake those moments, but there’s more awareness now and more resources available to help us process them.” The culture around mental health in fire service has shifted, offering more support than ever before.
But for those who put on the gear and answer the call, the triumphs outweigh the hardships. The most rewarding moments can be life-changing—pulling someone from danger, providing critical care in a medical emergency, or simply offering comfort in someone’s worst moment. “Helping people at their worst moments and making their day just a little better—it doesn’t get more meaningful than that,” says Danielle. Firefighting is more than a job; it’s a commitment to showing up for the community, no matter what the day—or night—brings.
MORE THAN JUST FIRES
While Hollywood may make firefighting look like constant flames and heroics, the reality is a little different. “About 70% of our calls are medical emergencies,” Jessica explains. “The rest are accidents, fire alarms, hazardous materials, rescues, and fires.”
With that in mind, the team is passionate about fire prevention and safety. “A few simple precautions can make all the difference,” Jessica says.

Here are their top safety tips for homeowners:
• Close Before You Doze: Sleeping with your bedroom door closed could potentially have a life-saving impact during a fire by slowing the spread, reducing toxic smoke levels, improving oxygen levels, and decreasing the temperature.
• Test Your Alarms: Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms need to be tested regularly, have their batteries changed twice a year and replaced when recommended by the manufacturer.
• Keep the Kitchen Safe: Never store anything on top of the stove, and always have a fire extinguisher nearby. If a grease fire starts, never use water to put it out. Finally, never leave your cooking unattended.
• Know the Stats: Cooking was the leading cause of home fires in 2022. In 2023, a U.S. fire department responded to a fire somewhere in the country every 23 seconds. Fire safety doesn’t stop at having working smoke alarms. The American Red Cross recommends creating a fire escape plan and practicing it twice a year with all household members. Knowing two ways out of each room and having a designated meeting spot outside can save lives in an emergency. If a fire breaks out, get out, stay out, and call for help—never go back inside for anything or anyone.
Additional precautions can further reduce fire risks:
• Be mindful of heating equipment. Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from space heaters, fireplaces, and other heat sources.
• Practice electrical safety. Don’t overload outlets, replace frayed wires, and never run cords under rugs or furniture.
• If you smoke, do so outside. Never smoke in bed or leave lit cigarettes unattended.
Interested in Firefighting? Here’s How to Get Started
For those considering a career in fire service, the Eagan Fire Department offers opportunities to learn more. “We do station visits and some ride-alongs for those interested in the fire service,” Jessica says. “If joining a paid-on-call department in your community is an option, it is another great way to get experience and training.”
Most importantly, the department is a welcoming place for those ready to take on the challenge. “Eagan Fire has always been supportive of everyone who walks through the door,” Jessica shares. “It’s a department built by great men and women, and we’re proud to be a part of it.”
Whether they’re responding to emergencies, educating the public, or inspiring the next generation of firefighters, Jessica, Danielle, and Natalie prove every day that dedication, resilience, and heart are at the core of their work. And for Eagan, that’s something worth celebrating.

HOW TWO WOMEN ARE CHANGING THE NETWORKING SCENE IN MINNESOTA
Breaking Barriers: Women Lifting Women Higher

ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE ENGSTROM
“When women connect, support, and step up, we all rise together.”
CREATING COMMUNITY, ONE CONVERSATION AT A TIME
For years, Lisa Carmichael felt like something was missing. Despite living in the Eagan area for over three decades, she found herself searching for local connections in her field. As a fractional CMO and founder of lisarcarmichael.com, she wanted to get deeper into local SEO but couldn’t find others nearby who shared her interests. That’s when she had an idea—why not create a space where women entrepreneurs could meet, learn from each other, and grow together?
Enter Tracie Munce, a restaurateur in the Eagan business community and co-owner of Eagan Arms Public House, Merlin’s Market, and Merlins Rest Pub. When Lisa reached out, Tracie didn’t hesitate. "I had been on my own journey of growth and knew I wanted to surround myself with strong, driven women," she recalls. "Lisa’s idea immediately clicked—we needed a space where women could come together and elevate each other."
And just like that, the Female Entrepreneurs’ Happy Hour was born.
A SAFE SPACE TO SHOW UP, INSPIRE, AND GROW
Launching the happy hour was about more than gathering a group of women in a room—it was about creating a space where real conversations could happen. Post-pandemic, many entrepreneurs and budding business founders still hesitated to step outside their comfort zones. Social circles had shrunk, and virtual networking had replaced face-to-face interactions. Lisa and Tracie wanted to change that.
"The first time we hosted, we weren’t sure what to expect," Lisa admits. "But then, every month, women kept showing up. Not just once or twice, but consistently. We had an average of 25 women at every event, all eager to connect, share ideas, and support one another."
Tracie had long envisioned her restaurant as more than just a place for food—it was a community hub. "Hosting these events wasn’t just about business—it was about creating something meaningful. I also wanted a partner to do it with. Lisa was that person. She follows through on ideas and makes them happen."
A MOVEMENT BEYOND NETWORKING
As attendance grew, Lisa and Tracie realized they could do even more. The happy hours had become a launching pad for women entrepreneurs to step into their own power, but they wanted to take it further.
"We started hosting quarterly Power Luncheons to introduce attendees to local women who are making an impact," Tracie says. "The idea was to help women not just build connections but also to see what’s possible when they step up. We wanted them to walk away feeling fueled and ready to go after their own goals."
The luncheons also became a way to give back. A portion of the proceeds from their events supported Operation Dignity International, a non-profit organization that provides resources for vulnerable communities in Ghana, West Africa. "When we handed over that donation, we saw firsthand how our efforts could ripple outward," Lisa shares. "That moment solidified our mission—we wanted to create something even bigger."
SHATTERING THE GLASS CEILING
That “something bigger” turned into Glass Ceiling Foundation, an initiative dedicated to equipping women with the knowledge, connections, and confidence to build their businesses. " Women receive just 2% of all venture capital funding—the lowest percentage since 2016," Lisa points out. "That’s not because women aren’t capable—it’s often because they don’t have the same networks, resources, or mentors to help them take that first big step."
Women are expected to hold around 15% of CEO positions by 2025, marking a significant increase from the current percentage, with some estimates suggesting this could reach 20% by 2030. However, this number is still considered low and indicates a continued underrepresentation of women in top leadership roles. Glass Ceiling is working to change that by giving women access to mentorship, education, and the right connections to break into leadership and create lasting change. Through workshops, mentorship, and scholarships, Glass Ceiling is working to change that narrative. "We don’t just want to talk about breaking barriers—we want to actively help women push past them," Tracie says. "We’re helping them think differently, approach business with confidence, and step into leadership roles in their own industries."
THE POWER OF SHOWING UP
Perhaps the most powerful part of what Lisa and Tracie have built is the impact it has on the women who walk through the door. "We’re now the stewards of this growing community of women entrepreneurs," Lisa says. "We’ve watched them step up, amplify their voices,
and embrace who they are—not just as business owners, but as leaders."
Tracie agrees, adding, "Helping women feel seen and heard is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. There’s something incredible about watching someone go from feeling uncertain to stepping into a room with confidence, ready to tell their story."
LOOKING AHEAD
The movement Lisa and Tracie started in Eagan isn’t slowing down. With more events on the horizon and a growing network of women looking to support each other, The Glass Ceiling Foundation has positioned itself to make an even bigger impact.
"The desire to create a legacy doesn’t require a specific background or a certain level of education," Lisa says. "It starts with showing up, finding your voice, and being willing to grow. And that’s exactly what we’re here to help women do."
For any woman in the Eagan area looking for that ‘something more,’ Lisa and Tracie are ready to welcome them in. "There’s a seat at the table," Tracie says with a smile. "Come join us."

Breaking Barriers & Building Success
SAMA ALI-BERCHEM BALANCES FAMILY, BUSINESS, AND CREATIVITY LEADING PORTKEY SEO SOLUTIONS.

Sama Ali-Berchem never saw herself as someone who would follow the traditional corporate path forever. With a degree in Economics from Macalester College and a background in IT Security and Medical Devices, she had all the makings of a technical expert. But deep down, she was always a creative at heart.
When she discovered search engine optimization (SEO) and web development, she realized she could merge her analytical skills with her love for innovation. That’s how Portkey SEO Solutions was born. Nearly nine years later, she’s running a thriving business and redefining what it means to be a female entrepreneur.
A DIFFERENT PLAYING FIELD
Entrepreneurship isn’t the same experience for women as it is for men. “It’s 100% different and in so many capacities,” Sama says. “When I started, I was 25. It wasn’t just gender but age, too. Women are placed in a position where they must demand authority, which can be challenging for other egos.”
She’s seen these differences play out in networking groups, where young men seem to gain immediate acceptance, while women often wait months for approval. “It doesn’t feel like an even playing field. We have to work harder and set boundaries early. And sometimes, it’s okay to turn down opportunities.”
For Sama, setting boundaries isn’t just about self-preservation—it’s about protecting her team. “They deserve a strong leader who is looking out for them.”
She also believes in the importance of women supporting women, especially in local communities. “There’s room for all of us to rise. Instead of competing, we should lift each other up, collaborate, and celebrate our wins together.”
ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLE ENGSTROM
FINDING TIME FOR HERSELF
With multiple businesses growing at once, Sama admits that self-care sometimes takes a backseat. “It does get compromised,” she says. “But the boundaries I set help me carve out time with my family, and that’s my self-care.”
When she does get a chance to unwind, she enjoys walks in the spring and fall, quiet moments where she can clear her mind, and the occasional nail appointment. “If I had more time, I’d get a massage once a month. That would be amazing.”
MOTHERHOOD & BUSINESS: THE BALANCING ACT
Sama’s seven-year-old son keeps her on her toes with his many activities, and balancing work and family takes careful planning. “I try to be as efficient as possible. I wake up early and aim to get everything done between 5 AM and 5 PM. Evenings are for my family.”
She also has one firm rule: no business communication on weekends. “I don’t respond until Monday. It’s a matter of principle.”
A TRAVEL BUDDY & BOOKWORM
One of Sama’s favorite things is traveling with her son. “He’s such a good traveler! He helps with his luggage, never complains about long walks, and when my husband isn’t there, he tells me, ‘I got you, Mom.’”
Their love for books is another shared passion. “We read together before bedtime, and now he reads to me instead. He’s really into fantasy stories, which I love, too.”
LIVING WITH OTOSCLEROSIS
Two years ago, Sama was diagnosed with otosclerosis, a progressive bone disease that has caused complete hearing loss in her right ear. Over time, the condition will gradually spread to her other ear. “It’s something I’ve lived with, but I finally decided to get a hearing aid to help improve my daily quality of life.” Rather than hide it, she hopes to empower other women to be open about their own challenges. “This isn’t something to feel sorry about. It doesn’t have to hold us back.”

“Invest in yourself. A business coach, a life coach—whatever helps you grow as a business owner. Stick with it. Success doesn’t happen overnight.”
“Women are placed in a position where they have to demand authority, and that can be challenging for other egos. We have to work harder, set boundaries, and sometimes, it’s okay to turn down opportunities.”

WORDS OF ADVICE FOR FUTURE FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS
Sama doesn’t sugarcoat the realities of entrepreneurship. “Have tough skin. If you don’t, fake it until you make it. Over time, you’ll develop it.”
She’s dealt with difficult clients, payment delays, and people trying to push her around. Her advice? “Put your blinders on to avoid distractions and focus on your goal. Look at the hurdles as minor inconveniences on the way to the life you’re building. You’ll get there.”
And most importantly: “Invest in yourself. A business coach, a life coach—whatever helps you grow as a business owner. Stick with it. Success doesn’t happen overnight.”

Faith, Family, and Print: A Business Built on Passion and Relationships
For many, printing is just ink on paper. But for Maria Caram, owner of Minuteman Press in Mendota Heights, it’s a way to connect with customers, solve problems, and bring ideas to life. Originally from the Dominican Republic, Maria never imagined owning a print shop one day—but her journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and a love for learning.
THE JOURNEY OF BUSINESS OWNERSHIP
Maria first came to Minnesota in 1985 as an exchange student at the University of Minnesota, where she studied computer science. Her initial career path led her to the corporate world, including a long tenure in database management at Northwest and Delta Airlines. After retiring from the airline industry, she wasn’t ready to stop working. She first explored entrepreneurship through a successful cigar-rolling business. But Maria soon found herself searching for something more.
“I wanted something I could do full-time, year-round,” she recalls. Leveraging her own experience designing materials for her cigar business, she decided to invest in a Minuteman Press franchise. The Mendota Heights location had already been established for about a decade, but she stepped in to take ownership two years ago, embracing the challenge of running a small business.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY
MATTHEW SOUSA
From day one, Maria immersed herself in the world of printing, learning the latest techniques, understanding customer preferences, and building a team that shared her vision.
CHALLENGES AND TRIUMPHS
Like any business owner, Maria faced obstacles when she started. “I assumed it was as simple as pressing ‘print,’ but it involves much more,” she admits. “Each design requires adjustments, templates, multiple software programs, cutting, and fine-tuning to ensure the printer produces exactly what we need.”
When it comes to competing with large online print providers, Maria explains, “There’s something special about working with customers directly, making sure they get exactly what they need. We’re not just an online store where you upload a file and hope for the best. We ask questions, make recommendations, and take pride in helping our customers put their best foot forward.”

Despite the challenges, she finds joy in the tangible nature of printing.
“Seeing something go from a digital file to a beautifully printed product— it’s rewarding.”
Maria is passionate about fostering connections. “I always tell people: work hard, make connections, and maintain them. Those relationships will become your support system, both personally and professionally.”
“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to stay adaptable. Print is constantly evolving, and so are the needs of our customers. We stay ahead by offering innovative solutions and maintaining strong relationships with our clients,” she shares.
Despite the challenges, the rewards have been even greater. Seeing a client’s face light up when they receive their finished product or hearing how

a well-designed piece helped a business grow is what fuels her passion every day.
“Print isn’t going anywhere,” she said with a smile. “It’s evolving, and we’re evolving with it.”
FAMILY FIRST
Outside of work, Maria is passionate about her three sons. “I look for any excuse to see them whenever they call.” She is also an avid pickleball player and enjoys the fun and new friendships that come with playing with different groups of people.
When asked about what advice she would give her younger self, Maria responded, “The one thing we can be certain of in life is that things change, but be open to it because in the end, with some faith, everything will fall into place. Every experience will shape you into a better person.”
With her leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to quality and service, Minuteman Press in Mendota Heights is set to continue making a lasting impact—one print job at a time.
