I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. It’s hard to believe that like it or not, the days are already getting shorter, but at least there is no sign of snow!
This issue is always one of my favorites. This month, we are celebrating the kids and pets in our lives.
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment, and we are happy to highlight the best for Eagan kids in this issue.
Secondly, who could forget pets? This special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love and the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. Who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
Growing up, I had a cat named Lucy for 23 years. She was named after the Kenny Rogers song “Lucille.” She was always in the audience during my impromptu singing concerts. She was also a willing model for fashion shows where she would wear the finest scarves and sunglasses.
What children and pets share is that they need us. Our care, attention, and intention shape how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.
As always, I would like to thank all of Eagan City Lifestyle's sponsors. Their generous support enables us to get our magazine directly into our readers' homes. Please don't hesitate to contact me (amy.sousa@citylifestyle.com) if you have a story to share or a business to recommend.
Happy summer!

Her dedication to the animal rescue community is unparalleled. While Minnesota remains her primary focus, Steffany believes in building relationships wherever she goes. “I believe that working together and supporting each other is what makes us all successful.”
She has traveled far and wide, driving thousands of miles each month to transport dogs to rescues or foster homes. She collaborates with sanctuaries and has even transported raccoons and pigs to safety.
ARTICLE BY AMANDA WAGNER PHOTOGRAPHY BY VIVEK NARULA AND DEB BERNARD“Everything I do in my life has to do with my past,” shares Steffany Fleming, the founder and executive director of Inspire & Flourish, a nonprofit organization supporting dog rescues.
For Steffany, running a nonprofit is just as important as a for-profit business, and it’s hard work. The very nature of the organization means fundraising is always top of mind. Especially when it determines the extent of your impact. Steffany’s tireless efforts have not only had an impact on the lives of countless dogs but also inspired a community to come together and make a difference in their own way.
While Steffany’s original focus was on both children and animal-related causes, the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic led her to shift her attention to animal rescue. This decision proved to be transformative, as the animal rescue side of her organization flourished. She recognized the vulnerability of rescue dogs and the immense effort it takes to prepare them
Steffany truly understands the unique needs of different rescues and works tirelessly to provide them with essential supplies such as blankets and cages. She utilizes platforms like Petfinder to ensure that those seeking an animal companion are connected with the right rescue.
She is also a problem solver. When she was tired of asking for money, she turned to her for-profit business for ongoing financial support. Five years ago, she decided to use Mobile Memories, her photo booth business, to fund her efforts at Inspire & Flourish, providing consistent funds for the nonprofit.
Steffany’s innovative approach allows her to balance her business commitments and philanthropic endeavors effectively. Her photo booths cater to all types of events, from weddings and graduations to school events and more, maximizing the potential to generate consistent funds for her nonprofit.
These funds make her efforts possible. Whether it’s providing vital medical care, including antibiotics, or hosting spaying and neutering
clinics, she has an inventory of supplies and is always open to whatever is offered to her because someone in her network will have a need.
She occasionally embarks on international projects too, because she recognizes that funds can stretch further in other parts of the world. This allows her to make a significant impact where it’s needed the most.
One of the highlights of Inspire & Flourish’s calendar is the annual Fashions for Furry Friends fundraiser held each February. Designers from around the world create exquisite outfits for dogs, which are showcased alongside adoptable dogs. The event has something for everyone, from apps and a cash bar, to a silent auction and even opportunities to bring home a furry friend.
Throughout the year, Inspire & Flourish organizes auxiliary events and maintains an online store, aptly named Fashions for Furry Friends, offering a variety of merchandise to support their cause. Steffany actively engages with schools and churches, fosters partnerships, and welcomes volunteers. Donations, whether toys, beds, or food, are always welcome and thoughtfully distributed to ensure they find the best possible homes.

Step into the welcoming atmosphere of Lakeside Orthodontics, and you’ll notice something a bit out of the ordinary. Among the bright smiling faces at the front desk, there’s a dog bed tucked against the back wall. Wait a minute, dogs at the orthodontist’s office? That’s right! At Lakeside Orthodontics, two adorable dogs, Maslow and Woody, take turns visiting the office on alternating days. And occasionally, Dr. Jennifer’s daughter’s mini golden doodle, Teddy, adds to the furry fun.
The story behind this unique addition to the office began when Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth found herself in a predicament. Her husband and youngest child embarked on a spring break adventure without her, leaving her at a loss for what to do with Maslow, her now 10-yearold Goldendoodle. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, she decided to bring him to work. Initially planning to keep him confined to her office, fate had a different plan for them.
On that eventful day, a young patient arrived at Lakeside Orthodontics, displaying signs of anxiety and tearful apprehension about getting a new wire put in. Dr. Jennifer, ever the problem solver, came up with a creative solution. She struck a deal with her young patient: if they could endure
ORTHODONTICSthe wire procedure, Jennifer would introduce them to Maslow (coincidentally named after Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs).
Surprisingly, it worked wonders! Maslow entered the clinical setting, sensing the patient’s distress, and instinctively offered comfort by resting his head on their lap. From that moment, a beautiful bond was formed, forever changing the dynamic at Lakeside Orthodontics.
It would be remiss now to mention that Maslow, the 10-year-old Golden Doodle, carries a name that holds a deeper meaning. Inspired by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Maslow the dog plays a significant role in fulfilling the needs of patients at Lakeside Orthodontics.
Like the psychological theory, Maslow the canine companion helps address the fundamental needs of patients, providing comfort, emotional support, and a sense of security during their orthodontic journeys. With his gentle nature and intuitive understanding, Maslow effortlessly fosters a nurturing environment beyond straightening teeth.
On the other hand, Woody, the two-year-old Bernadoodle, takes his name from the beloved Peanuts character, Woodstock. Like his namesake, Woody boasts a unique personality that brings joy and excitement to Lakeside Orthodontics. With a playful and adventurous spirit, Woody is always up for new experiences, radiating infectious enthusiasm that spreads throughout the office. Whether exploring the great outdoors or simply lounging at home, Woody’s happy-go-lucky attitude is a reminder to embrace life’s adventures, big or small. Together, Maslow and Woody form an inseparable duo, each contributing their own special qualities to create a truly unforgettable experience for patients at Lakeside Orthodontics.
Curious about why Goldendoodles became the chosen furry companions, we asked Dr. Jennifer herself. She explained that Goldendoodles are considered hypoallergenic due to their minimal shedding. This quality made them an ideal choice, considering Dr. Jennifer is allergic to dogs. The choice seemed clear.
And so thrilled by the positive outcome of Maslow’s initial presence in the clinic, Dr. Jennifer decided to take it further. Maslow and his younger brother Woody received specialized training to behave appropriately in an office environment. These well-behaved pups now roam freely around the office, seemingly aware when patients feel uneasy. As Dr. Jennifer puts it, they tend to “hover around” and offer a soothing presence. Their comforting aura creates a remarkable effect on the young patients, who, out of love for the dogs, find the strength to set aside their fears. It’s truly amazing to witness how these dogs benefit the children, but it’s an open question of who is benefiting whom.
When asked about her motivation for incorporating dogs into the office, Dr. Jennifer expressed her desire for Lakeside Orthodontics to exude an atmosphere of sweetness, kindness, and warmth. She aims to eliminate patients’ nervousness or fear and strives to create a fun and lighthearted environment. The dogs play a vital role in achieving this goal, fostering a sense of comfort and reassurance.
It’s worth noting that the presence of Maslow and Woody significantly impacts patients with dental anxiety, and in a good way. In the U.S., around 36% of people experience fear related to dental treatment, with 12% having an extreme fear. The presence of these loving canines goes a long way in lessening those concerns and making orthodontic visits a more positive experience.
So, each morning as Dr. Jennifer prepares for another day at Lakeside Orthodontics, the biggest question is, “Who will be joining me at work today?” With Maslow and Woody ready to bring joy and comfort to the patients, one thing is for sure—the moment you walk through those doors, you’ll be greeted by friendly smiles and the wagging tails and warm presence of Lakeside Orthodontics.
Exceeding expectations and reaching new heights with the Eagan Dance Team.
On a recent, hot summer morning, a large group of teenage girls is laughing, smiling, and sweating. It’s what you would expect on a beautiful summer day in Eagan, Minnesota. But this group – the Eagan Dance Team (EDT) – is not lounging around; they are working up a sweat as they power through an early three-hour practice inside of Eagan High School. The team is preparing their competitive routine for the upcoming summer dance camp they attend. Just watching the three-minute routine full of kicks, turns and precision movements might make an observer exhausted. But
for those three hours on a hot summer morning, the team keeps at it, refining sections of the dance over and over until it is locked in.
Under the guidance of their head coach, Nicole Lonetree Brovold, the Eagan dance team continues to exceed expectations and reach new heights. With over 20 years of varsity dance team coaching experience and deep passion for dance, Coach Brovold has cultivated a culture of excellence and unity within the team. “They are a family,” she says as she describes the team’s connection.
When asked, that’s also how senior Taylor Schiltgen describes the team. “Hardworking, drive, and a family.” “We are really welcoming,” senior Hannah Gelineau says. Both Schiltgen and Gelineau, along with fellow seniors Chloe Breen and McKenna Henning, chose to open enroll to Eagan High School and join the dance team because of this welcoming feeling. “It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” Henning says. These four seniors also share a deep love of dance, with each starting when they were little girls.
Balancing the demands of school and dance is no easy feat for this team of dedicated athletes. Many members of the team also pursue their love of the sport at a competitive dance studio. As members of the EDT, they must navigate a rigorous schedule during the school year that includes after-school practices and weekly performances or competitions while maintaining their academic responsibilities and life outside of the dance team. “You get into a rhythm with it,” Breen says as she describes how she balances it all. Lonetree Brovold notes the team’s commendable time management skills and a strong work ethic, pointing out that they excel both in the classroom and on the dance floor. “Many of the dancers were just inducted into the National Honor Society.”
However, the Eagan dance team’s influence extends far beyond their academic accolades and the competition stage. Recognizing the importance of giving back to their community, the dancers actively engage in various community service initiatives such as hosting youth dance clinics, volunteering at Feed
My Starving Children, and organizing fundraisers. Egg My Yard is one of the team’s annual fundraisers where they raise money by setting Easter eggs up in donor’s yards for a fun egg hunt.
The team competes in the tough South Suburban Conference with some of the most talented dance teams in the state. This helps to challenge their skill and determination, pushing each other to strive for greatness. The dancers of EDT understand the level of competition they face and embrace it as an opportunity for growth and improvement. Breen acknowledges this and says, “Seeing how much (our) program has grown, we are now a school to beat.” The competition choreography is intricate and demanding. The dancers must possess not only technical precision but also an ability to convey emotion and captivate audiences. During competitions, they are judged on their jazz skills, kicks, execution, choreography, and difficulty of the routine. “We go all in for everything,” Gelineau comments. Henning echoes that sentiment saying, “Our drive and dedication are so powerful.”
The Eagan dance team’s unity and achievements are a testament to their unwavering work ethic, determination, and support system. Their success is not merely measured in trophies and awards but in the personal growth and leadership, they develop along the way, which will serve them well beyond their high school years. Senior Nadine Frank sums up her experience with the team by saying, “The experience I have had being a part of the Eagan Dance Team for the last three years is something I will always remember.”
“The Eagan dance team’s unity and achievements are a testament to their unwavering work ethic, determination, and support system.”
As a parent, there is little that is more important to you than your child’s education. You want them to excel and that often means supporting them where they are to get up to speed or even get ahead. Sylvan Learning of Rosemount - Eagan stands as a beacon of educational support and an opportunity to do just that – support your child exactly where they are.
At the helm of this location is Annette Braaten, a lifelong educator who not only serves as the center director but is also the proud owner of this local franchise. Annette’s journey with Sylvan spans an impressive two decades, intertwining her love for teaching with her entrepreneurial spirit.
Returning to her hometown of Rosemount was a dream come true. Fresh out of college and armed with a teaching degree, Annette started working part-time at Sylvan’s Burnsville location before finding the Rosemount-Eagan location where she worked for the majority of her career. Little did she know that this opportunity would shape her future in ways she could never have imagined.
For many years, Annette immersed herself in the role of a tutor, honing her skills and nurturing the potential of her students. Her love for the work led her to a full-time position as director of education under the previous owner of Sylvan Learning.
Sometimes life throws a lot at you and 2014 would prove to be a pivotal year. Annette simultaneously found out she was expecting her son, learned of her mom’s terminal cancer diagnosis, and was offered the opportunity to buy the Sylvan Learning franchise where she worked.
This was a time of perseverance. Through challenge and loss, she rediscovered her entrepreneurial spirit, recalling her childhood days of running lemonade stands and organizing garage sales. This was an opportunity to make something her own.
Annette’s Sylvan Learning Center exudes a sense of warmth and belonging. It emanates a tight-knit family atmosphere. She has cultivated an environment where students, parents, and staff feel like valued members of a community dedicated to academic growth and success.
At Sylvan, supplemental education takes center stage, catering to a diverse range of students. From those who are below grade level and require extra support to those seeking enrichment opportunities or aiming to get ahead, Annette and her team are committed to unlocking the potential within each child. The programs at Sylvan Learning are thoughtfully designed to address the individual needs of students. While a myriad of subjects are offered, reading and math have emerged as the most popular areas where families seek assistance and support. The nurturing environment created by Annette and her team, coupled with the expertise of their teachers, fosters a love for learning and empowers students to reach their full potential.
Annette’s journey with Sylvan Learning is a testament to the transformative power of education. In the moments between fishing in our pond and swimming in the pool, our family will celebrate birthdays and have outdoor parties. True to form, I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way. My beach ball garland is a spin-off of the traditional balloon garland. Everyone uses balloon garlands… so let’s make one out of beach balls instead! Everyone serves a birthday cake… how about one carved out of a watermelon for a crazy twist?? I hope you join me in the making of these fun additions to a party!
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY LEANN PARKERHave you ever noticed that when blown up, beach balls have a little plastic loop that forms where they are blown up and sealed? It makes for the perfect place to string twine through and use as an outdoor “balloon” garland! String it up, add some extra beach balls to the pool or yard and you have all the party decorations you need!
• 2 packs of assorted sized beach balls (assorted 20”, 16” and 12” for a total of 36)
• 1 pack of mini beach balls (5” sized, total of 25)
• Thin rope or twine
• Air pump
1. Using an air pump, blow up all the beach balls... It takes a while!
2. Arrange inflated beach balls in a line on the ground, alternating sizes as you go.
3. Starting on one end, thread your string or twine through the blow loop of each beach ball until you reach the end.
4. Tie each end of your beach ball garland to a post or tack to a wall.
A cake that you could eat for breakfast! Made only of fruit and (if you want to go real crazy) some fresh mint and whipped cream too. A few years ago we started making watermelon cakes for our summer birthday celebrations due to one of our little ones suffering from food allergies. In order to make a cake that even she could enjoy, the watermelon cake was born in our lives. Even if you don’t have family or guests with food allergies, this cake is a thriller and loved by all!
• 2 large watermelons
• Assortment of berries and fruit
• 4 wooden skewers
• Toothpicks
• Whipped cream (optional)
• Fresh mint (optional)
Instructions
1. Prep both watermelons by cutting off the rinds and sculpting to create a cylinder shape with a flat top and bottom. Make the bottom cylinder bigger and the top cylinder slightly smaller.
2. Stack your smaller watermelon on top of the larger using wooden skewers to support the center.
3. Use assorted berries and fruit to decorate the outside of your watermelon cake. For the sides of the cake, use toothpicks to help the berries stay in place.
4. Serve alone or with a dollop of homemade whipped cream.
