Meet four women shaping our local arts scene with bold voices and inspiring stories.
This one’s for the sisters, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, and all the remarkable women who help hold the fabric of our community together.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, there’s no better time to pause and express gratitude for the women who lift, lead, and inspire us. From teachers to painters, wedding planners to business owners, these women are the ones turning dreams into reality and bringing visions to life.
When I think of the women who’ve shaped me, my grandmother comes to mind instantly. She’s always been the wise matriarch—the steady thread weaving our family together. She turns 90 this year, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the strength, stories, and cajun traditions she’s passed down from a time that feels far away but still deeply relevant.
As you flip through these pages, I hope you think of a woman who’s made a difference in your life. Maybe it’s time to send that text to your mom or sister you’ve been meaning to write. Maybe you’ll finally make that dinner reservation and treat your partner to a well-deserved night out.
Whatever it is—here’s to the women who inspire us, support us, and keep our hearts full.

As a local wedding planner with over 17 years of experience, my goal is to help couples create a wedding day they’ll cherish—without regrets. A wedding is more than a celebration; it’s a deeply personal tradition, a gathering of loved ones to witness and honor your commitment.
Planning such a significant event can be overwhelming—both emotionally and financially. I understand this well—not just as a planner, but as someone who has been with my husband for 16 years. To help ease the process, here are my top tips to ensure you walk away from your big day with only joyful memories.
Your love story is unique, and your wedding should reflect that. The industry has evolved beyond rigid traditions, allowing for creativity and personalization. Whether you’re deciding between flowers or candles, a white dress or a bold color, plated dinner or buffet—take the time to explore what resonates with you as a couple.
Stay organized with a budget and timeline, and focus on who you truly want to celebrate with. Most importantly, enjoy the planning process—it doesn’t have to be stressful! Give yourself permission to let go of perfection and lean into what feels meaningful.
One of the biggest stress relievers is having professional help. A wedding planner or day-of coordinator ensures everything runs smoothly, allowing you and your guests to fully enjoy the moment.
Durango is a popular destination for weddings, and with nearly 85% of my clients living out of town, having someone local to coordinate with vendors can save time, money, and unnecessary stress. A planner is not just an organizer—they are a mediator, negotiator, and problem solver.
Having experienced vendors helps minimize stress, so vet them thoroughly through reviews, recommendations, and clear communication.
3. DON’T LET OTHERS’ OPINIONS OVERSHADOW YOUR VISION
While you want your guests to have a great time, remember—this is your day. If you love ice cream more than cake, serve ice cream. If you want a Star Wars, Harry Potter, or fairy-themed wedding, go for it! Personal touches—like custom napkins featuring your pets or signature drinks named after them—make your wedding truly yours.
You’ll never regret being authentic, but you might regret giving in to pressure. Tune into what excites you, and trust your instincts.
A wedding day can feel like a marathon and a sprint! Assign your best man or maid of honor to make sure you eat, stay hydrated, and pace yourself—not just with alcohol. You want to remember your big day, not feel sick or exhausted.
You’ve spent months planning—don’t forget to enjoy it! Carve out quiet moments for yourself to breathe and take it all in.
You don’t have to wait until the aisle to see each other. Many couples opt for a private vow exchange before the ceremony, creating an intimate moment before the whirlwind begins. If public vows feel daunting, consider alternative unity ceremonies like lighting a candle or pouring wine together.
Intentional moments like these become some of the most treasured memories. Find ways to connect throughout the day, even for just a few quiet seconds.
Have a plan—and plan to be flexible. Things may not go exactly as expected, and that’s okay. Whether it’s unexpected weather or minor hiccups, keep perspective: what matters most is the commitment you’re making.
For example, we once had a ceremony with two flower-girl sisters, about 5 and 3 years of age. They were perfect for the role. When it was time to walk down the aisle, the older sister went first, dropping her flower petals. The younger, following behind, began picking them up and putting them into her basket. Totally unplanned—but so innocent and cute. It’s part of their wedding story that can be enjoyed for years to come.
Let go of control and trust the beauty in imperfection.
Hiring a professional photographer and videographer may be a big investment, but it’s one you’ll never regret. With so much happening on your wedding day, you’ll cherish having high-quality photos and videos to relive those moments for years to come.
Make sure to also ask your photographer to capture candid moments—those unscripted laughs, happy tears, and small in-between glances are the heart of the day.
In the end, the most important thing is to love yourself and each other—because that’s what brought you to this day in the first place. Embrace the joy, be present, and plan a wedding that reflects your love story, free of regrets.
Happy planning—and cheers to your happily ever after!
“WHETHER IT’S UNEXPECTED WEATHER OR MINOR HICCUPS, KEEP PERSPECTIVE: WHAT MATTERS MOST IS THE COMMITMENT YOU’RE MAKING.”

Art is a wily endeavor. Craft something that has yet to be seen. Corral these sounds into harmonies. Assemble old words into new ideas. Translate emotions through gooey, colorful mineral compounds. Explore how art influenced the lives of four women who, in turn, now influence others through the power of their artistic expression.
FOUR ARTISTS SHARE HOW ARTISTRY ALTERED THEIR LIVES, ADDING CREATIVITY, FREEDOM, HEALING, AND TRANSFORMATION

The decision to give up everything and go on the road in a tiny home with her then-partner and twin boys catapulted Ally Shea into professional artistry. One morning in the tiny home, she noticed a wall above the kitchen cabinets was a giant white canvas hungry for art. She went to the hardware store with nothing more than an idea of what she wanted to create.
Becoming an artist enabled Shea to embrace new powers—specifically power tools. She notes, “When I started using power tools…it’s just so fun! I don’t know why more women aren’t encouraged to learn how to fix things and be more self-sufficient. It started a huge boulder rolling down a hill for me because not only was it really fun to create beautiful things, but I also learned so many skills that I can apply everywhere in my home and my life.”
She attests, “I never do not want to make art.” Luckily, Shea has installed her first-ever state-of-theart workshop in the garage at home. She envisions the workshop doubling as a gallery down the road.
Musician, Teacher, Junior Orchestra
Conductor for the San Juan Symphony
Sam Post experiences music the way ordinary people experience breathing. That is, it is vital. She must have it at all times. She describes the experience of being on the podium as, “Feeling all of the music around you. You hear the whole thing at once. It feels like I’m not even there. It’s like I’m part of the music. It feels like I’m sinking into this other level of space.”
In Post’s youth, music was a lifeline. She recounts, “I didn’t have a lot of friends, and I struggled to make friends. My only friends were in band. It really saved my life.” Music served this role again when Post was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Vision, voice, mobility—the disease slowly robbed Post of her senses. “The only thing that stayed was my flute playing,” she says. “It’s really impacted how I think about music now. It’s even more my savior.”
Her passion for musical artistry is rivaled only by her enthusiasm to teach music. She notes, “My favorite sound in the world—it’s not a good note; it’s not a bad note. It’s: Ohhhhhh!” The sound a student makes when their understanding jumps to a whole new level.
No barrier can withstand the invincible force that is comedy. Andrea Rossi witnesses this phenomenon during every stand-up comedy routine. She explains, “There’s this way that comedy can allow us to talk about things that maybe we can’t talk about in other contexts, and it sheds light on it, but it does it in this way from the side that’s a little more gentle, and a little more playful.”
Comedy also erodes the barriers that otherwise hold one back. Anxiety and imposter syndrome are co-stalkers shadowing most people, including herself. When Rossi chose to pursue comedy as an art form, she realized she was choosing to confront her fears. “It was the moment I decided to really go towards what was scary. Go towards the fear knowing that on the other side, there’s real growth that I want as a person. It was the decision to be brave in my own life,” she says.
Rossi shares the mantra that coaxes her through hesitation: “It’s all about putting shots on net. It’s about putting yourself out there as many times as possible, knowing that sometimes it’s going to work, sometimes it’s not going to work, and you’re just trying to test your material.”
“People should see me in my garage, taking pallets apart! Covered in sawdust!” Deb Wolf laughs. “I work really hard—I work seven days a week: six days [in the gallery], and on Sundays I build the frames. And I love it! I love what I’m doing!”
Wolf’s path to painting and building full-time was littered with many long pauses. After graduating with a degree in art (painting and graphic art), Wolf took on marriage and parenting two sons with special needs. For many years, her fingers never touched a paintbrush. And yet, even now, she finds power in the pause. It builds potency in the artist’s spirit. “You pause for different things as a mom. But I’m somehow making it work,” she says.
Although she’s happiest when manipulating hand tools and power tools, Wolf can’t always avoid grappling with public skepticism, such as when someone assumes that her husband builds the frames. Undaunted, Wolf notes, “It empowers me as a woman to know that, a.) I taught myself the woodworking skill, and b.) I’m not afraid of hard work or physical labor. And there’s nothing I’m not afraid to learn.”

TAKING A MOMENT TO INVEST IN YOUR HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Spring has officially sprung! The days are stretching longer and getting warmer, encouraging people to step outside, maybe catch their breath, and clear their minds—giving each of us a moment to pause and reflect upon the year thus far, and maybe set a few goals before summer.
Local business owner, nutritionist, and teacher Jolie Ensign encourages everyone to pause and take a few moments for themselves. She created Pause Fitness and Nutrition—your wellness hub, offering an array of classes and personalized nutrition programs. Work with Ensign to better understand your nutrition goals, and be sure to check out both yoga studios here in town. Ensign and her team want to empower you and provide the tools to make meaningful and sustainable changes to your habits and lifestyle.
“The mission is in the name,” Ensign said. “It came out of the pandemic—to pause. Whether that is to pause and move, pause to eat, pause to reflect, breathe, or be mindful. Pausing for your health and wellness.” Taking a moment to pause is crucial nowadays, as it can be difficult to set aside time for ourselves. CONTINUED
As mentioned above, Pause offers a variety of movement classes, ranging from basic yoga— including Slow and Fluid, Hot and Vibrant, and Restore and Recharge—to Yin Yoga and invigorating Pilates classes. Each studio has all the materials necessary for your practice, such as mats, blankets, blocks, and yoga bolsters.
Pause’s yoga studios have built-in infrared lights used for heating. Ensign explains, “Our classes use the heat, but there is no humidity. Infrared heat feels like you’re being warmed by the sun. So you will get a little sweat, but you’re not drenched. You don’t feel wrecked or depleted when you’re done with a class,” leaving you feeling rejuvenated and ready for the day.
Each month, Pause offers additional workshops focusing on a multitude of topics and different practices from guest teachers. In April, there were six different workshops scheduled, including sound meditation, Bhakti Yoga, and a fertility awareness workshop.
your own—encouraging one another to be consistent and prioritize movement in our busy lives.
This summer, Pause is launching a 90-day Summer Challenge dedicated to your wellness journey and developing your strength and resilience. From June 3 to August 31, take a combination of 45 different classes—some you may be familiar with, while others may be new. Choose between four different categories: Pilates, Yoga, Strength, and Self-care. This is a great opportunity to expand your comfort zone, work with different teachers, and try new modalities. If you have any questions or want to learn more, email jolie@ pausedurango.com.
“A lot of people know what they need to do, but they need support and accountability to actually make a change”
Teaching five classes a week, Ensign has witnessed the budding of friendships firsthand—and how the classroom becomes a tight-knit community. She said, “The classes build community and support for building [better] habits.” Routinely attending classes and seeing familiar faces is refreshing. It is a great social space while focusing on your health and wellness. Being a part of this community means you are surrounded by supportive individuals whose goals may align with
Also, be sure to save the date and check out the Sayulita, Mexico yoga retreat in October! In February, Ensign led her first international retreat in Tulum, Mexico. She said, “The Tulum retreat was an amazing group of women that connected really well and just had a great time together, and that is what we are hoping for in Sayulita as well.”
A soulful movement and reverence retreat, this unique week-long experience during Día de los Muertos celebrates Mexico’s rich culture, vibrant scenery, and delicious cuisine. Each day will begin with soulful yoga and movement practices, followed by an array of exciting activities such as market visits, therapeutic massages, snorkeling, and secret beaches.

Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings.
As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions
associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.
In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.
Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.
For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.
No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.
Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.
RESTORE YOUR BODY AND SOUL.
