Made with Love

Those who know me know that I love food. I love trying new flavors and appreciate a beautiful presentation. And while I’d call myself a foodie, it’s the act of preparing food for others that truly fills my bucket. Cooking is my love language, and it’s something I’ve embraced since childhood.

Growing up with two working parents, I spent my after-school hours with TV “classics.” I’m not talking about “Saved by the Bell” or “The Brady Bunch” (okay, now I’m dating myself)—but shows featuring the original food television stars, like Emeril Lagasse (BAM!), Martha Stewart, and Julia Child. Inspired, I often had dishes like roasted chicken or pasta waiting for my parents when they came home. You’re welcome, Mom and Dad.

That joy of feeding the people I love only grew. My college roommates even nicknamed me “Marty Stew” after my food queen idol. Soon, I was hosting Friendsgivings and Sunday suppers, and now I spend my not-so-spare time drafting a cookbook of Strauss family favorites to send with my oldest as he heads to college next year. (Cue the tears.)

When they say the secret ingredient is love, it’s true. Gathering people around a table with good food and drink nourishes the body, but it also feeds the soul.

And that’s what this issue is all about.

Inside, you’ll find inspiration for everything from elevating a dinner party with a private chef to acts of kindness that feed those who tirelessly give to others. We’ve included fall cocktails, alcohol-free sips that redefine happy hour, pages for wine enthusiasts, plenty of local food finds from pizza to pork chops, and even must-see destinations worth a quick direct flight.

You’ll meet Tim Laielli, who proves good food doesn’t have to be complicated, and discover a local coffee trailer brewing up more than your daily latte. Plus, we cover balanced eating, the importance of clean drinking water, and even how to navigate life with picky eaters.

Food and drink may be essential, but they also connect us. They spark conversation, create community, and remind us of the joy found in breaking bread together. So grab a snack (you’re going to get hungry) and maybe a cozy blanket, and enjoy.

Chef Marissa Fisk Brings Local Bounty to the Table

On a golden Dripping Springs evening, guests arrived at a stunning ranch property, where sweeping Hill Country views set the stage for something special. Chef Marissa Fisk had prepared a farm-to-fork dinner party, an evening designed to capture the beauty of local abundance and the art of slowing down to gather around the table.

For this occasion, Fisk designed to embrace the season, honor the land, and showcase the bounty of the Hill Country. Partnering with trusted providers to achieve this vision, she shaped her menu around food that is fresh and local. “When I bring it all home, it’s so fun for me because it’s like a basket of art,” Fisk says of the produce, meats, and breads she gathers. “It’s inspiring.”

As guests mingled and the sun slid down over the hills, the meal unfolded in thoughtful courses that highlighted both flavor and place. Guests began with wine from William Chris Vineyards and an appetizer of venison cherry chipotle sausage and wild boar sausage chimichurri sandwiches, prepared with Force of Nature meats. The main course brought together freshly baked sourdough from Goodbake ATX, cheese-stuffed agnolotti from Pasta One Two Three, and a vibrant spread of vegetables and greens from Wild Candy Farms and Songland Farm—all paired with a perfectly grilled Force of Nature tenderloin. To finish, Fisk served her own tiramisu, a sweet and elegant finale to a meal that celebrated the region’s farmers, ranchers, and artisans.

But it wasn’t just about delicious food; for Fisk, the evening was an opportunity to create an experience. She embraces a slow approach to enjoying a meal with friends and family, believing that it takes time for the magic to happen. “Because we didn’t rush it, there was an emphasis on slowing down time and connecting with others,” she says. “People were just so engaged in conversation; they didn’t want to leave.”

This fellowship, she believes, is why gatherings matter. “In our world today, there’s such a loss of connection, and people are hungry to come together,” Fisk shares. “Gathering serves a joyful purpose for people.”

For this dinner affair and at every event she orchestrates, Fisk is intentional about creating an atmosphere where people can relax, savor the meal, and truly enjoy the occasion. Preparing food and hosting guests can be overwhelming, but as a personal chef, Fisk takes that weight off the host, offering a beautiful table, wholesome dishes, and flavors guests might not try on their own. “The host can just enjoy their company and the comfort of the home,” she shares, “while we bring the table to life.”

Steeped in Hill Country beauty, the evening stretched on well after the sun disappeared and the night sky deepened. Laughter around the table lingered, and no one seemed in a hurry to leave, as the warmth of food and friendship offered a quiet reminder of the nourishment found in gathering. Fisk reflects, “I just loved watching people enjoy themselves and seeing the connection, the heart, the beauty of the experience.”

Butternut Squash Ravioli with Crispy Sage Cream Sauce

As the air turns crisp and the season invites us to linger a little longer at the table, Fisk turns to recipes that highlight fall’s bounty. Her butternut squash ravioli captures everything she loves about this time of year—simple ingredients elevated into a meal meant to be shared.

(Serves 4)

INGREDIENTS

• 1 box butternut squash ravioli, frozen or fresh

• 1 cup heavy cream

• 2 tablespoons maple syrup

• 1 teaspoon pumpkin spice

• 1 tablespoon butter

• 1/2 cup toasted hazelnuts

• 6 fresh sage leaves

• 1 teaspoon grapeseed oil

• Cracked salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS

1. Cook ravioli and place in a dish or serving platter.

2. Prepare the sauce: On medium to high heat, melt butter in a medium pan. Add heavy cream and bring to a boil; then lower temperature to a simmer. Whisk in maple syrup, pumpkin spice, and salt and pepper to taste (I like about one teaspoon of each). When ingredients are well combined, pour sauce over the pasta.

3. In a small frying pan on high heat, add grapeseed oil and fry the sage until crisp. Place on a paper towel to remove excess oil. Toast hazelnuts. Top the pasta sauce with sage and hazelnuts.

Gardien Preserves, Ages, and Unlocks the Full Potential of Your Wine

When people hear about Gardien, they often say, “I love wine, but I don’t have enough wine to need storage.” And that’s fair. But you don’t need a cellar full of wine to enjoy its wonders. Even a few carefully chosen bottles can transform over time into something extraordinary. All it takes is the right wine and a little patience to experience the magic of aged wine reaching its full potential.

Finding the right wine does take some effort. In today’s grab-and-go world, mass-produced wines dominate grocery and liquor store shelves. They’re made for consistency, affordability, and quick consumption. These bottles often rely on industrial shortcuts such as machine harvesting and using additives to achieve consistency in flavor and color, which results in a very narrow window of drinkability. Within just a couple of years, their flavors tend to plateau and fall off.

Age-worthy wines tell a different story. Crafted with intention by passionate producers, these wines are built to express the specific place where they’re grown and then evolve and mature over time. The taste can vary from year to year depending on the weather, and that’s part of the fun.

To explain how wine flavors mature, think of tasting a fresh, tart, red cherry and then compare it to eating a well-ripened black cherry picked at the end of the season. Both are cherries and both are good, but the darker cherry has more depth of flavor.

Whether it’s a structured Bordeaux, a bold Napa Cabernet, or a soulful Barolo, wines that are built to last eventually reveal their true character. As they mature, the tannins soften, the flavors deepen, and the aromas develop nuance, delivering a taste and finish that lingers like a great memory.

People choose wines for aging for many reasons—often to commemorate travels, life achievements, or special occasions. Some purchase a case or two of wine to mark a wedding anniversary or the birth of a child, then savor a bottle each year to celebrate, experiencing how the wine matures over time. These wines become intertwined with life’s milestones, creating shared memories with family and friends.

To ensure those moments are truly unforgettable, Gardien provides optimal storage for long-term aging, keeping bottles at a steady 55 degrees, around 75 percent humidity, and shielded from light—conditions essential for preserving flavor, aroma, and balance. While wine refrigerators and home cellars can work in the short term, their glass doors and interior lights make them unsuitable for extended cellaring.

Gardien does more than safeguard your wine; we simplify the experience by providing concierge-level service, ensuring your collection is meticulously inventoried, shipments are received seamlessly, and deliveries are handled with care—all at an affordable price. A step above traditional storage lockers, with Gardien, you only pay for what you store rather than empty locker space, and we take care of the heavy lifting for you.

Cellaring wines can be a smart investment, as quality wines often debut at their lowest price and appreciate as they approach peak maturity. When you store your wines with Gardien, we maintain a complete, up-to-date inventory so you always know what wines are aging in your collection, and we provide guidance so you’ll know which wines to hold and when to enjoy them.

Gardien exists because storing wine is about preserving moments, memories, and the passage of time. To give your bottles the care they deserve, move that case out of your closet, let it rest in the perfect spot, and let each bottle become a celebration to savor.

racing FOR A CAUSE

A group of homeschooled students recently turned a routine grocery trip into an adventure aimed at filling the pantries of those in need.

The Fun Food Race Extravaganza, organized by Brandy Yeargan of the Rooted & Rising homeschool co-op, brought together 15 students aged 5 to 14 for an unforgettable lesson in giving back. Armed with $30 and a wish list, five teams of three raced through H-E-B—walking, not running—to gather 10 essential items while staying within budget.

“We have to get kids involved in the community when they’re young if we want them to serve the community as they grow,” Yeargan explains. “The way to get kids involved is to make it fun, and this was a super fun project.”

Thanks to parent and business sponsorships, the creative competition generated $250 worth of food, or 181 pounds of groceries, for Helping Hands Dripping Springs, a 100-percent volunteer-based organization serving the community since 1986.

“Sometimes we just need to give them a little extra motivation to show them how much fun giving back can be,” says participant parent Heather Daoust. “I tell my kids every day, ‘You can do hard things, especially for others.’”

The donation came at a crucial time. According to Lindy Orr, Helping Hands president, the organization has seen demand surge 30 to 40 percent in recent years. What once served 85 families weekly now supports 165 to 185 families, with each household able to take home $75 to $100 worth of groceries.

How Local Kids Turned Grocery Shopping into an Altruistic Adventure

“We don’t always think of Dripping Springs as a community with folks in need, but there are many,” Orr says. “Poverty has so many different faces. We’ve helped successful business owners get back on their feet. All it takes is one kiddo getting sick, one car accident, or one spouse getting laid off. Our goal is to help families get back on track so they can be fully independent again.”

Located on Dripping Springs Methodist Church’s campus on Ranch Road 12, the food pantry receives 75 percent of its inventory from the Central Texas Food Bank. The remaining 25 percent comes from community donations. (Non-perishable food donations can be dropped off at 17 donation barrels located throughout Dripping Springs.)

The Fun Food Race is one of many events community members and organizations have dreamed up to help keep the shelves of the food pantry full. From the Boy Scouts’ Halloween food drive to scavenger hunts and food drive competitions, Lindy says there are dozens of creative ways kids and families can get involved.

Upcoming events include an Open House at the food pantry on October 10; the annual Empty Bowl Project on November 2, which provides more than 65 percent of the organization’s annual budget; and Project Elf, a beloved tradition that provided Christmas gifts to more than 430 DSISD children last year.

IRISH WHISKEY AND MITCHEL KIM

Irish Spirit with American Grit

When you think of an Irish whiskey story, you might imagine centuries-old distilleries set among rolling green hills. But for one Irishman who once sat behind a London trading desk, the journey to whiskey greatness took a much less traditional route: from high-stakes finance to a Colorado distillery parking lot and, finally, to a new home in Dripping Springs.

For years, Aidan Mehigan worked as a trader in London, making fast-paced decisions on stocks and markets. But behind the tailored suits and glowing monitors, an entrepreneurial spirit tugged at him. As an Irishman who also happened to be an avid bourbon drinker, he found himself uninspired by the Irish whiskey options available.

“Irish whiskey was either a place name or a surname,” Mehigan recalls. “Midelton or Jameson. But it never really spoke to me from a brand or a flavor perspective. It was not bold enough in either sense.”

So in 2018, he made a daring decision to walk away from finance and pour himself into creating something that was truly his own.

The transition from stocks to spirits wasn’t immediate. First, there was a period of exploration, research, and a lot of knocking on doors. A chance meeting in a Colorado parking lot with Jordan Via, master distiller at Breckenridge Distillery, proved to be the turning point. Via didn’t just share advice; he also offered Mehigan a job.

Suddenly, the former trader was working double shifts on the distillery floor, learning the craft of American whiskey production from the ground up. For a month, he immersed himself in mash bills, char levels, and barrel aging, drinking up knowledge as fast as he could. The experience laid the foundation for what would become Natterjack Irish Whiskey, launched in 2019.

The vision was clear: combine Irish whiskey's smoothness with bold American bourbon techniques to create something new.

Natterjack is far from another cookie-cutter Irish whiskey. It begins with a three-and-a-halfyear rest in ex-bourbon barrels, followed by a unique finish in virgin American oak casks. It’s in that second stage that the whiskey finds its distinct character.

The result is a spirit layered with complexity: light tobacco notes, chewy oils and toffee, and a silky finish balanced by lemon blossom honey.

“The virgin American oak is where the magic happens,” Mehigan explains. “It gives Natterjack its personality.”

That personality extends to the branding. On every bottle is a distinctive toad, the natterjack. Indigenous to Ireland, it stands apart from other species, much like the whiskey itself. The creature isn’t just a mascot; it’s a symbol of individuality and a nod to the brand’s mission of carving out its own path in a crowded market.

“WHEN YOU MOVE YOUR FAMILY HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD TO SELL WHISKEY, COMMUNITY IS REALLY IMPORTANT. WE’VE FOUND THAT HERE IN DRIPPING SPRINGS.”

- AIDAN MEHIGAN

Natterjack Cask Strength, named “Irish Whiskey of the Year 2024” in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible

Launching a brand in 2019 came with challenges. When the coronavirus pandemic struck, global distribution and marketing plans were thrown out the window. Still, Mehigan persevered, determined to grow Natterjack into something that could stand on the international stage.

In February 2023, he and his family packed up their lives in Ireland and moved to Texas, with a very deliberate choice of hometown: Dripping Springs. “We knew we wanted to live in Texas,” Mehigan says. “My wife, Faye, wanted sunshine, outdoor space, and cowboys. We rolled out a map, saw the name Dripping Springs, and she said, ‘That’s the place.’”

The choice turned out to be serendipitous. The community welcomed them warmly, and the local market embraced Natterjack. From shelves at Spec’s and Mad Rooster's to bars like FairLane Cocktails and Coffee, the whiskey quickly found loyal fans. “The reaction in Drip has been amazing,” Mehigan notes. “Our story has resonated so well. The idea that people move from Ireland to Dripping Springs is really cool, and the folks here have gotten behind that.”

For Mehigan, Dripping Springs offered more than just a business hub. It also offered a family-friendly way of life. “When you move your family halfway around the world to sell whiskey, community is really important,” he reflects. “We love the warm welcome in every restaurant. Plus, the prevalence of playgrounds at breweries means we go everywhere as a family. It’s amazing. And the kids love it too.”

From a strategic standpoint, Dripping Springs also makes sense. “We’re in the heart of the country. New York is three hours away, and so is L.A. I can do all my travel and still be home at bedtime,” Mehigan says.

Fast forward to today, and the bold experiment has paid off. Natterjack is now available in 24 U.S. states through retail and direct-to-consumer channels. Internationally, the whiskey can be found in 19 countries on four continents.

For a man who once lived in the high-stakes world of trading floors, the pivot to whiskey might seem improbable. But for Mehigan, it’s always been about creating something authentic that carries his identity and spirit in every sip. “I wanted to build something. And actually build it myself from nothing,” he says. With Natterjack, he’s done exactly that.

WHAT’S IN YOUR WATER?

FROM TAP TO TABLE: HOW WATER SOFTENERS, PURIFICATION, AND PLUMBING MAINTENANCE HELP ENSURE CLEAN WATER

Water touches everything we do, from our morning coffee and shower to a fresh salad or simmering soup. It nourishes our bodies, flavors our meals, and keeps our homes running smoothly. What’s coming out of your faucet can affect taste, health, and even your appliances. Knowing what’s in your water—and taking steps to protect it—can make all the difference.

It’s not uncommon to take a sip of water and feel like something is “off.” While most municipal water sources are treated to meet safety standards, that doesn’t mean it’s free from things you don't want in your drinking glass. And the same is true for well and rainwater in our area.

According to the Environmental Working Group, over 250 contaminants have been detected in U.S. tap water, including chlorine byproducts, heavy metals, and hard water minerals that contribute to buildup and appliance wear. Living in the Hill Country, we’ve all probably experienced those hard water issues in our bodies, on our hair, and at our plumbing fixtures.

So, what can you do?

Start by thinking of your plumbing system as the delivery network for your home’s most vital resource. Water softeners and purification systems work together to protect that network and your family’s health.

Water softeners combat our area’s hard water, which is loaded with calcium and magnesium. You’ll notice it on cloudy glassware, itchy skin, and stiff laundry. But it’s also quietly shortening the lifespan of your appliances, especially your water heater. Softened water helps prevent scale buildup, which means your system runs smoother, heats more efficiently, and lasts longer.

Water purification systems are your home’s defense against invisible threats like bacteria, lead, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Depending on your local water quality and concerns, a whole-home or under-sink system can make a big difference in taste, odor, and safety. These systems are also a fantastic option for homes on rainwater.

At Mend, we also recommend regular water heater flushes and plumbing inspections. Stagnant water and sediment buildup can become a breeding ground for bacteria, not to mention put stress on your pipes and fixtures.

Knowing what’s in your water—and taking steps to protect it—can make all the difference.

Here’s the deal: clean water doesn’t just happen. It’s the result of smart systems, preventative maintenance, and a little help from the pros.

If you’ve ever wondered what’s actually flowing through your faucets, it might be time for a water quality test and consultation. We’ll help you understand your home’s water grade and the steps you can take to improve it.

Clean water is peace of mind. Let’s make sure your water is working for you—not against you.

Tim Laielli smiles a lot. If you’re like me or any of his literally millions of followers on social media and YouTube, you know the grin, along with his voice and humor. Over coffee, he’s a normal Dripping Springs dad in jeans, boots, and a backwards snapback. Known as “barefoodtim,” his online following makes him one of our town’s most influential, well, influencers

Tim makes food videos, but he isn’t a chef. In fact, he has no professional cooking experience or formal training. His father, an actual chef, taught him tips and tricks, but Tim didn’t embrace cooking until he became an adult. He is primarily selftaught, with 15 years of experience feeding his family.

“I advocate for more men cooking at home—not just leaving it to women. Men should take initiative to feed their families,” he says. He’s active on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube with DMs open to helping everyone. “I enjoy interacting directly with followers and encouraging their cooking journey,” he says.

Tim’s videos show him cooking for his family. He narrates the action, cracks dad jokes, and tells stories about his life and family, with lots of self-deprecating humor. A standard example: “Every Fourth of July, I’m quickly reminded how lucky my family is to have me,” he quips. “Don’t get too jealous though: What I offer in the kitchen, I lack everywhere else. One hundred percent of dads

think they can grill and they’re pretty much all wrong. They have good intentions, though, and that’s what matters.”

He says he tries to toe the line with humor and wants viral content for the right reasons: “Effort goes into both the cooking and the voiceover work,” he says. “I aim for people to laugh and appreciate the message.”

One successful and long-running feature is called “hometowns,” where Tim makes signature dishes from cities across the country and reports to the audience “if it sucks.” Think fried pork tenderloins from Indianapolis and Cleveland’s Polish boy sandwich. He’s lived and traveled all over, but when he and his wife Lindsey moved to Central Texas in 2015, he knew it was home. Tim is a wedding photographer by trade, and Dripping Springs offered the opportunity to be close to many stand-out venues.

“COOKING NEW DISHES ISN’T AS DIFFICULT AS PEOPLE THINK. MANY GET SCARED, BUT IT SHOULD BE APPROACHABLE, NOT INTIMIDATING.”

The couple has two daughters. Emery is a sophomore at Dripping Springs High School, and Toni is in eighth grade. The family loves being in the Hill Country with everything they need, away from the stress of Austin life.

He jokes that Drip’s featured “hometown food” would have to be pizza or burgers. Following the recent Texas flooding tragedies, he was inspired by P.

Terry’s fundraising and generous donations. While waiting in line for a burger, he decided to donate 100 percent of his eBook sales for the following five days, raising more than $6,250 for the Austin Disaster Relief Network. “I’m most proud of turning online influence into real-world impact,” he says.

There are a lot of exciting real-world projects on the horizon, too. Tim slyly asks if I would be interested in a local breakfast burrito spot, hinting at an upcoming pop-up opportunity. He’s also writing a book, set to be published by Harper Collins around Father’s Day 2027. In the meantime, he’ll be busy cooking and creating content with some fall flavor.

The goal for the “barefoodtim” project and the book is to help people feel

comfortable cooking at home, lower the intimidation barrier, and make it fun. It’s also about making restaurant-quality meals in your own kitchen.

Any tips for a dad looking to feed his family this season? “Go get a Dutch oven. I love mine. Drop it in the oven—braises, chuck roasts, potatoes, anything goes,” he says as his face lights up. “One pot—so comforting, so easy. If you’re trying to

improve cooking, it’s the best thing to buy and learn to use.”

“Cooking new dishes isn’t as difficult as people think. Many get scared, but it should be approachable, not intimidating,” he explains. “Cooking at home should be fun, not overly serious, and focused on quality meals.”

“Women tell me all the time, ‘my husband could never do this,’” he continues. “That’s crazy. Cooking for your family, along with exploring different cuisines, is not that difficult. It shouldn’t be scary. It should be fun. I love to hear that I’ve helped people feed their families. That’s fun for me.”

He grins, but I know he’s not joking.

Hill Country, Uncorked

Explore Texas Wine Country Through Tastings, Trails, and Holiday Cheer

As fall settles over the Texas Hill Country, the rolling hills surrounding Dripping Springs come alive with cooler breezes, golden light, and a lineup of seasonal wine experiences perfect for day trips or weekend escapes. Dripping Springs serves as the ideal home base for exploring the region’s celebrated wineries and events, each blending education, hospitality, and the rich flavors that define Texas wine country.

October kicks off with the Texas Wine Month passport, a month-long celebration featuring more than 50 wineries across the Hill Country. Passport holders enjoy complimentary tastings and bottle discounts while traveling at their own pace through the scenic Hill Country. With four tastings per day, the passport encourages unhurried exploration, inviting guests to savor everything from bold reds to crisp whites, fun sparkling wines, and much more.

Later in the fall, wine enthusiasts can immerse themselves in Hill Country Wine Camp, an educational event designed to take guests behind the scenes of Texas winemaking. Participants engage directly with winemakers, growers, and sommeliers while attending seminars covering grape

growing, varietal tastings, and food pairings. For those who want more than a simple tasting flight, Wine Camp is an opportunity to connect deeply with the craft of Texas wine while exploring the region’s unique terroir.

As the season transitions toward the holidays, the Christmas Wine Affair passport invites visitors to sip their way through more than 50 wineries adorned in festive décor. Running from late November through mid-December, this event is perfect for holiday shopping, offering special discounts on bottles ideal for gifting or sharing at seasonal gatherings. Evenings often end at cozy local restaurants or boutique hotels, making it easy to pair a day of tasting with Hill Country hospitality.

In December, Texas Hill Country Wineries will host a special winemaker dinner at Hill + Vine in Fredericksburg, featuring six member wineries for an unforgettable evening of food and wine benefitting the Texas Hill Country Industry Scholarship Fund. Guests will enjoy a thoughtfully crafted multi-course menu, each dish paired with

wines hand-selected and presented by the participating winemakers themselves. This intimate event offers a rare opportunity to engage directly with the people behind the wines, hear their stories, and experience the unique flavors of the Hill Country in a curated and personal setting—an ideal way to toast the season in true Texas wine style.

Adding to the richness of the experience, Texas Hill Country is home to a diverse profile of varietals. Texas excels with Mediterranean and warm-climate grapes, producing bold reds, such as Tempranillo, Tannat, and Mourvèdre, alongside aromatic whites like Viognier, Roussanne, and Malvasia Bianca. The limestone and granite soils of the Hill Country lend these wines their characteristic vibrancy and complexity, while Italian and Spanish grapes such as Sangiovese and Touriga Nacional thrive in its sunny conditions.

For visitors based in Dripping Springs, these events easily pair with day trips through the wine trail, scenic drives past Pedernales Falls, and leisurely lunches in Fredericksburg, Marble Falls, or Boerne. Whether you spend a single afternoon sampling Viognier under the oaks, attend Wine Camp for an immersive experience, or toast the holidays during the Christmas Wine Affair, fall in the Texas Hill Country blends exceptional wines with an inviting atmosphere that’s quintessentially Texan. This season offers the perfect chance to slow down, savor world-class wines just minutes from home, and experience firsthand why the Hill Country has become one of America’s most exciting wine destinations.

PASS THE PEAS, PLEASE

I love food. More than the taste of a good meal, I love gathering around a table with people I care about and sharing an experience. Mealtime fosters conversation, connection, and laughter. Research shows that families who eat together tend to fare better in areas such as high-risk behaviors, mental health, nutrition, and even school performance.

When my husband and I lived in Chicago, we relished the endless variety of restaurants right outside our door. Before having kids, we were food adventurers and explored cuisines of every kind. Naturally, I assumed our children would grow up enjoying meals just as much as we did.

I still remember the excitement of feeding my first child her inaugural bite of solid food after six months of breastmilk. With all the anticipation of a pediatrician-mother, I offered a carefully prepared spoonful of vegetables. What I received was a blank stare, a scowl, and the dramatic reappearance of those vegetables across her face. That moment marked the beginning of a long journey filled with picky eating, rejected foods, and daily cleanup. It was not the family dining experience I had envisioned.

As a pediatrician and mom, I know I’m not alone. Feeding children can feel far from natural and certainly not easy. Parents often struggle with busy schedules, sports practices, and the ever-present

lure of screens. Add to that the abundance of ultra-processed snacks at school, parties, and events, and it’s no wonder many families feel mealtime slipping away. Rushed breakfasts and dinners eaten in the car have become the norm, yet we know that gathering around the table matters.

So how can families reclaim mealtime? Here are some of my suggestions:

• Get kids involved. Depending on their age, let them meal plan, wash vegetables, stir ingredients, plant a vegetable or herb garden, or set the table. When children participate, they feel invested.

• No devices. And yes, that includes parents. Keeping phones in another room helps everyone stay present.

• Keep offering. Don’t give up, even if your child repeatedly refuses a food.

Good food is a gift, but the act of gathering may be an even greater one. As parents, we have the chance to teach not only the value of nourishing our bodies but also the importance of community at the table. Each day will bring its own hurdles, but with intention and consistency, we can help the next generation grow up healthier—and more connected—than the one before.

Savor the Moment

How 12 Fox is Redefining Happy Hour

At 12 Fox in Dripping Springs, our mission has always been about more than what’s in your glass. We’re a veteran-owned gathering place where people connect—over stories, over music, over shared moments that matter. Fireside Chat, our nonprofit’s weekly dinners for veterans and first responders, has taught me that the right atmosphere and a welcoming drink in your hand can open the door to conversation, healing, and friendship.

My commitment to healthier beverages began in 2019 during the early building stages of 12 Fox. I was with my mom in Utah while she underwent natural cancer therapy, and for the first time, I truly understood the deep impact that chemicals, preservatives, and hidden additives have on our bodies. That experience was a turning point for me. It cemented my resolve that, at 12 Fox, we would brew with the cleanest possible ingredients—using collected rainwater and steering clear of chemicals or preservatives in everything we make, whether it’s beer or botanical hop waters.

So when I started thinking about a new line of beverages, it was about creating something beautiful and nourishing to share with our community. The result is a botanical hop water series that’s every bit as refreshing as it is intentional.

“When I started thinking about a new line of beverages, it was about creating something beautiful and nourishing to share with our community.”

These drinks begin with rainwater we collect on site, filtered for purity. We add premium hops for crisp, clean effervescence—no alcohol, no artificial sweeteners, no preservatives. Then, we infuse each blend with carefully chosen herbs, adaptogens, and Lotus Wei floral essences, known for their subtle energetic benefits. The result is a mindful alternative to traditional happy hour—something that feels like a toast to your body as much as to the people around you.

One of my favorites is Grounded Glow, made with earthy citra hops softened by a whisper of apricot and a blend of grounding herbs. Light, citrusy, and uplifting yet steadying, it’s like sunshine in a glass. Another is Liberty Bloom, our seasonal release, garnished with fresh basil and a skewer of berries for both beauty and heart-opening energy. We’ve also introduced Lavender Lemonade, a calming twist on a summer classic made with lavender flower honey, and MIA, our bold citrus-forward hop water with just a hint of apricot.

What’s not in them is just as important: no alcohol, no sugar, no fake colors, no mystery additives. For our sober, sober-curious, wellness-focused, and designated-driver guests, that matters. For parents, athletes, and anyone who wants to leave happy hour feeling energized instead of depleted, it matters even more.

We brew each batch small-scale, honoring the craft tradition 12 Fox was built upon. And the timing feels right: There’s a cultural shift happening toward mindful drinking, and we’re proud to be part of it.

To me, these drinks are about more than flavor. They’re about celebrating connection—raising a glass to shared laughter, new friendships, and the simple joy of being fully present. Whether you’re here for Fireside Chat, live music, or just a quiet sunset, I hope you’ll join us in making happy hour a little more hippy.

LOVE AT FIRST SLICE

SLICE STREET PIZZA BRINGS MORE TO THE TABLE WITH PURE INGREDIENTS, THOUGHTFUL CRAFT, AND HEARTFELT HOSPITALITY

For Darius Aram, growing up in a Greek and Persian family meant life was steeped in a rich food culture, where preparing and sharing meals shaped many of his closest memories and relationships. Those traditions instilled in him a lasting appreciation for the way food connects people.

“When you feed someone, you give them a little piece of yourself,” he shares. “This sense of hospitality has been passed down through generations, and it’s ingrained in me.”

Guided by that heritage—and inspired by his grandfather, a restauranteur—Aram eventually left his career as a mortgage broker to follow his heart, opening Slice Street Pizza in 2023.

At Slice Street, neighbors receive a warm welcome and hot pizza, plus pizza rolls, fresh salads, and gluten-free options. Guests can stick with the classics, like cheese or pepperoni, or branch out with flavors like Sweet Heat or Chicken Pesto. Every pizza—available by the slice or as a whole pie—can be ordered New York-style, with a thin crust and crisp edge, or Detroitstyle with a thick, airy crust.

But Aram’s vision reaches beyond the typical family pizza joint; he’s intent on raising the bar by using high-quality ingredients to craft the healthiest pizza possible. “We’re not reinventing pizza; we’re not that audacious,” he laughs. “But we are audacious enough to improve upon how it’s done.”

It all starts with his simple motto: “Trust the crust.” The dough, hand-stretched daily by Slice Street staff, uses just five ingredients: salt, water, yeast, olive oil, and non-GMO flour, milled by Barton Springs Mill the day before it arrives at the pizzeria.

Aside from these clean ingredients, the real secret is time. Unlike traditional doughs that ferment for only 12 to 24 hours and can weigh you down or cause discomfort, Slice Street’s dough rests for a full 48 hours in a cold fermentation process. “That’s the game changer,” Aram explains. “It doesn’t sit as heavy with you, and it develops so much more flavor.” The result is a crust that’s light, crisp, and delicious—proof that giving dough the time and love it deserves makes all the difference. “Real food is unapologetically simple,” he adds.

CONTINUED >

That same philosophy extends throughout the menu: Slice Street makes dressings from scratch, limits seed oils, and uses fine cheeses, locally sourced produce, and red pepper from Flatiron Pepper Company. “This is how I cook for my kids at home, so this is what I’m trying to do for my customers,” Aram explains. “My mission is to provide the highest-quality product I can … to get true food into the hands of my customers.”

Still, he isn’t afraid to have a little fun. Slice Street’s recent “Slice of the Month”—the Blueberry Pie—pushes flavor boundaries with Brie cheese, blueberries, hot hatch chiles, and a swirl of hot honey on a white pizza. Other unexpected specials have ranged from a brisket pizza, crafted alongside Kareem El-Ghayesh of Austin’s KG BBQ, to an Australian-inspired slice topped with Vegemite, bay shrimp, tomatoes, and basil. Collaborations with Pig Pen BBQ, the Great British Baking Company, and Natkhat Flavors have also led to one-of-a-kind recipes. “We’ve put together ideas that turn out beautifully on a pizza,” Aram says.

Beyond the restaurant, Aram has launched a wholesale bread program, supplying breads and doughs to restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, breweries, wineries, and distilleries, as well as par-baked pizzas ready for easy finishing.

And he’s not stopping there. He’s also serving up monthly pizza parties—Slice Street Sessions—onenight-only collaborations pairing special guest chefs with local bands. The debut volume of the pop-up pizza nights, sponsored by Thirsty Vaquero, featured chef Fernando Greco cooking up Argentinian-style pizza while ROMANDO rocked the house with live party music.

Next in the series, Slice Street Sessions leaned into Oktoberfest flavors, delivering German fare from guest chef John McIntosh of Acopon Brewing Co. and The White Hart on Mercer Street, as well as lively music with a Bavarian flair. “Every month, we’re going to eat great pizza and have some fun,” Aram says. “It’s a way to give back to my customers and my community.”

This heart for giving is at the core of Aram’s goal to elevate every ingredient, flavor, and interaction at Slice Street. “To be able to feed someone, make them feel like they’re at home, is powerful hospitality,” he reflects. “You’re giving love to everyone who walks in the door. That’s what makes this business so beautiful.”

COMING SOON!

Slice Street is rolling out exciting updates, from a drive-thru window for easy takeout to a refreshed dining area with cozy booths—making it the perfect spot to grab a quick slice or settle in for a family meal. “It’s going to be pretty cool to see how this evolves.”

An Act of Kindness at Switch BBQ

It was a quiet moment—easy to miss—yet it unfolded into a beautiful act of kindness right here in our amazing community. On a Saturday evening at Switch BBQ, a subtle gesture of generosity spoke volumes and reminded me why I love Dripping Springs.

As the restaurant was preparing to close, four men walked in, visibly exhausted—mud on their boots, eyes weary but alert. With only a few diners left and the staff winding down, we noticed them right away.

I overheard the men say that they had placed a to-go order, and they apologized for keeping the restaurant open right up to closing time. The two bartenders were more than gracious and quickly brought them cold beers. One bartender, just as curious as the rest of us, asked the men where they had been. It turns out, they had just returned from Hunt, Texas, where they’d spent the day helping a business and some families that were devastated by the historic floods from the previous weekend.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACEY BERG

The weight of the experience was evident in their body language, but they shifted the focus, speaking only of the overwhelming support—from thousands of volunteers across the Hill Country—they had witnessed. They weren’t expecting anything; they were simply humble and grateful to grab a bite before heading home.

The team at Switch promptly showed their gratitude to these men and, without hesitation, brought out generous to-go plates of barbecue—brisket, ribs, pulled pork, and plenty of sides. But they didn’t stop there. The meals were on the house and the manager wouldn’t take no for an answer. The staff even bought the men a round of cold drinks and thanked them sincerely for their service to the broader Texas community. The men were surprised and utterly grateful.

There were no cameras, no announcements—just genuine appreciation for people who had given their time and strength to help strangers in need. It was a moment that reminded everyone present what kindness looks like: simple, quiet, and powerful. The staff at Switch BBQ chose compassion—and that kind of culture doesn’t happen by accident.

Not every act of kindness comes with fanfare; sometimes, it’s a fleeting moment that reminds us of the goodness around us. At Dripping Springs City Lifestyle, we’re truly grateful that this experience was shared with us, and we are honored to now share it with you.

We reached out to Shane and Catherine Stiles, owners of Switch BBQ, to ensure they knew how their staff had represented their business in the community. In keeping with her team’s example, Catherine responded with gratitude and humility, thankful that we would help tell this story.

“We have a really great team and I’m so glad they were so gracious to those men,” she says. “Shane and I are big supporters of the communities where we operate our restaurants, but never for publicity. To know our team exemplifies those values is incredibly rewarding to us.”   Swing by Switch and share some love with the team—your visit will brighten their day!

DISCOVER THE TASTES AND TRADITIONS OF MEXICO CITY

Mexico City is quickly becoming a favorite destination for foodies and those who want an immersive cultural experience. Few cities in the world are able to capture both the colorful imagination and the appetite of travelers quite like Mexico City does—especially when that adventurer is a Texan.

Once the heart of the Aztec Empire, Mexico City was founded in 1325, making it the oldest capital of the Americas. Today, Mexico City thrives with high energy and 9 million people. The climate is mild, the streets walkable, and around every corner lies something extraordinary to taste.

Shanny’s Shoutouts: Hill Country Favorites Blend Comfort, Community, and Culinary Adventure

From craft coffee to Thai comfort food to a chicken-fried ribeye with a twist, the Hill Country is brimming with flavors that feel both adventurous and homey. Here’s a taste of three local favorites worth savoring.

THE HENRY COFFEE

Back in August, my coworkers and I took a muchneeded caffeine break at The Henry Coffee, tucked away at Nutty Brown Road and RM-1826. What we thought would be a quick pick-me-up turned into an experience that was equal parts educational, daring, and delicious. By the end, we all agreed: The Henry serves some of the best coffee we’ve had in ages.

The owner, Ash Meredith, shared the story behind The Henry Coffee, and somehow it made every sip taste even better. Did you know Australia’s coffee culture began with Italian immigrants? I didn’t either! Ash named the shop after his great-grandfather, Henry, who not only called Ash his best friend but also instilled in him a tireless work ethic and a love for community. With Henry’s encouragement, Ash pursued his dream. Ten years later, rooted in faith and “keeping Jesus at the center of it all,” that dream is now a reality here in Dripping Springs.

Ash also explained that Australian coffee culture is “not just about the great quality of the beans, but also about the community, making friends, and doing life.” The Henry Coffee’s menu reflects those roots, and I happily let Ash recommend something new. I ordered the iced “Austin Magic” with almond milk, and it blew me away with its natural smoothness and sweetness—no syrup needed! I learned that the secret is in the pull: Only the first half of the espresso shot is used, reducing bitterness and highlighting the coffee’s natural sweetness. This Melbourne-born style, called a “magic,” uses double ristretto shots with just five ounces of milk for a perfectly balanced drink.

Dripping Springs is lucky to welcome The Henry Coffee at the beginning of its journey. Ash and his wife, Stephanie, have big dreams for the shop: “We can’t wait to see it unfold,” he shares. The feeling is mutual, Ash. We’re glad you’re here.

SPOON & FORK

With locations in Frisco, McKinney, and Kyle, we’re incredibly lucky to have expertly crafted Thai cuisine right here in Dripping Springs. Located in Belterra Village, Spoon & Fork has quickly become a favorite among Thai food enthusiasts … and for good reason.

I’ve tried a variety of their entrées, and after hearing countless friends, neighbors, and coworkers share their own “must-order” dishes, narrowing it down to just one favorite felt nearly impossible. That said, I always recommend starting with the chicken satay skewers. The chicken, marinated in a coconut turmeric blend, is grilled to perfection and served with a homemade peanut sauce alongside a fresh cucumber and red onion vinaigrette.

For the main course, two standouts rise to the top: the Panang Salmon Avocado and the Pad Thai (with shrimp or chicken). The salmon is pan-seared and nestled in a panang curry and coconut milk sauce, finished with bell peppers, avocado, and sticky white rice. And if Pad Thai is your go-to, Spoon & Fork’s version is as authentic as they come. The balance of sauce to noodles is spot on, and I always order mine with a little extra spice. The generous portions mean there’s often enough to take home, and somehow the leftovers taste even better the next day.

If you can save room for dessert, don’t miss the black rice pudding. Creamy, lightly sweet, and deeply satisfying, it’s the perfect finale to a memorable meal.

What makes Spoon & Fork particularly special, though, is how it manages to bring the vibrant, comforting flavors of Thailand into the heart of the Hill Country. It’s the kind of restaurant that feels just as fitting for a quick weekday dinner as it does for a lingering weekend outing with friends. Whether you’re already a Thai food devotee or trying it for the first time, Spoon & Fork delivers a taste of something both exciting and familiar, right in our own backyard.

WHISKEY RIDGE

If you’re searching for a rustic-yet-modern spot that feels warm and inviting the moment you walk in, look no further than Whiskey Ridge in Driftwood. Within minutes of being seated, we were greeted by operating partner Jimmy Zumwalt, whose genuine, down-toearth hospitality made us feel like old friends.

Zumwalt was born and raised as a rancher just down the road from Whiskey Ridge, and his easy charm paired perfectly with my first cocktail of the night—the aptly named “Hill Country Hospitality.” Crafted with reposado tequila, prickly pear, orange liqueur, pineapple, and lime, it was refreshing, bright, and beautifully finished with a dehydrated pineapple slice and black sea salt—a winner in my book.

For round two, I tried the “Texas Wildflower,” an exotic mix of Desert Door Pollinator, blanco tequila, St. Germain, honey, and lemon, shaken frothy and topped with a sprinkle of bee pollen. It was, quite literally, un-BEE-lievably good. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

Zumwalt also shared what makes Whiskey Ridge so unique, from its self-sustaining water system to the thoughtful planning of every plant and detail on the property. But the real star of the night was the chicken-fried ribeye. This indulgence starts with a Wagyu ribeye coated in a crispy spiced batter that somehow turns out perfect every time. The dish is crowned with “white” gravy, though it’s not white at all. The chefs cleverly

enrich it with, as Zumwalt puts it, “some of its love”: drippings from their guajillo- and pasilla-braised short ribs, giving it a deeper color and layers of smoky, savory flavor. After one bite, we were definitely feeling it. Whiskey Ridge may be a newer addition to the Hill Country, but the care and heart behind every detail make it feel like it’s been here forever. Driftwood just gained a new treasure, and one that already feels like home.

Simple, Sustainable Essentials to Fuel Your Body and Spirit

When we think about nutrition, it’s easy to get caught up in trends or extremes. But a truly healthy diet is about more than calories; it’s about fueling your body so you can show up with energy, resilience, and longevity. Just as important, food should also be a way to connect to yourself, your family, and the moments that matter.

Here are my four non-negotiables for building a healthy plate and a sustainable lifestyle:

Choose Protein

Protein is the foundation of strength, satiety, and repair. It helps stabilize energy, supports lean muscle, and makes meals more satisfying so you’re less likely to reach for snacks that don’t serve you. Prioritizing protein at each meal is one of the simplest, most effective ways to support both body composition and long-term health.

Drink Water

Hydration is often overlooked, but it drives nearly every function in the body. Water supports digestion, improves energy, cushions joints, and even helps regulate hunger. The truth is, most of us mistake thirst for hunger. Aim to sip consistently throughout the day so hydration becomes a habit rather than an afterthought.

AngiesMethod.com | @angie.lyngso “Confident Bombshells” podcast

Incorporate Fiber

Fiber is the unsung hero of nutrition. It keeps digestion moving, helps regulate blood sugar, and supports gut health, which we now know plays a role in everything from immunity to mood. Whole fruits, vegetables, beans, and grains are simple, powerful ways to nourish your body with fiber every day.

Have Fun

Health isn’t about restriction; it’s about freedom. Allowing room for fun foods and drinks creates sustainability. Sharing a dessert with your kids or enjoying a glass of wine with friends matters for emotional health just as much as nutrition. When joy has a seat at the table, consistency follows naturally.

PUMPKIN-SPICED WHITE RUSSIAN

Pumpkin Spice, Cream, and Coffee Liqueur Blend Beautifully in This Simple, Seasonal Cocktail

Cool evenings call for something cozy in your glass, and this pumpkin-spiced White Russian does the trick. It’s creamy, a little indulgent, and has just the right amount of warm fall spice. Think classic White Russian—but with a festive twist that makes it perfect for sharing with friends or sipping solo on the patio under a blanket. With vodka, coffee liqueur, a splash of cream, and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice, it tastes like autumn in a glass. Add a cinnamon stick or lemon wheel on top, and you’ve got yourself an instant seasonal favorite.
