Welcome Home,
The Way of the Gentleman
There’s something timeless about a gentleman. He’s not just defined by tailored jackets or polished boots—although here in Dripping Springs, you’ll likely spot both. No, a true gentleman is something quieter, deeper. He’s the one who opens doors, not for praise, but because he believes in common courtesy. He listens more than he speaks. His heart yearns to give. His mindset is to empower others to seek and find fulfillment in life.
A gentleman is someone who loves and serves his family, loves and serves his neighbor, loves and serves his community, and loves and serves his country. Wherever the gentleman is in his walk with God, I believe there is always something pulling at him, a greater force in the universe that calls on him to step up and get locked in on setting the example of good.
As a father to three boys—ranging from 5 to 21 years old—my personal mission is simple: to show them the unmatched love of God through faith in Jesus. You don’t have to share my faith to raise kids with purpose and intentionality, but I believe that hope in God empowers us to lead our children toward values that truly matter, like loyalty, respect, and humility. When we combine those values with a heart for serving others, we give them an immovable foundation that lasts a lifetime (Proverbs 22:6).
In this issue, we explore what it means to be a gentleman in our gateway to the Hill Country boomtown and honor the unsung heroes who are taking action spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. We will share stories from a veteran gathering his brothers and sisters in arms for support and healing; a father turning a life-altering accident into an opportunity to help others thrive; tradesmen who get their hands dirty so you don’t have to; and adventurers, creatives, and protectors who inspire us to step into our full potential.
Whether it’s pairing a bourbon with a sunset or volunteering to coach a Little League team, the modern gentleman builds community, not ego. Dripping Springs is full of men who lead with integrity and quiet strength.
So, pour yourself a glass of something local, kick up your boots, and enjoy the stories of the men—fathers, friends, and mentors—who are shaping life here in Dripping Springs with grit and grace.

FROM SMALL-TOWN ROOTS TO BELOVED annual tradition
THE WILD GAME DINNER: 35 YEARS OF GIVING
ARTICLE BY WHITNIE STRAUSS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAILA WADE
Since 1991, the Wild Game Dinner has brought the Dripping Springs community together through a shared love of faith, family, and cooking, all with the goal of making a difference. What started as a small gathering of friends has grown into one of the area’s most anticipated annual charity fundraisers. Over 35 years, the event has distributed over $1 million to local organizations, thanks to the generosity of donors and attendees.
Originally held at the old Dripping Springs High School, the event moved to larger venues as attendance grew, eventually landing at Dripping Springs Ranch Park in 2024. This expansion allowed the event to serve over 700 guests, ensuring even greater community impact.
Each year, the fundraiser supports numerous local causes. The 2024 “Paddles Up” beneficiary, Patriots’ Hall of Dripping Springs, received $15,000, matched by the James Avery Foundation. Other beneficiaries include The Burke Center for Youth, School Fuel, and Hometown Missions, with over $120,000 distributed to 35 organizations.
Major sponsors such as Volvo Cars of Austin, Elliott Electric Supply, and Elite Beef played a crucial role in the most recent event’s success. Chef Cody Kidwell of Verdes Mexican Parilla brought his expertise to the team this year, enhancing the dining experience. Guests enjoyed an array of wild game, from Cape buffalo to scimitar oryx, alongside traditional BBQ favorites.
With live music, auctions, and unique traditions, the Wild Game Dinner remains a beloved community celebration that continues to make a lasting impact.
To participate in the 36th annual Wild Game Dinner charity fundraiser, save the date: Saturday February 21, 2026 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Dripping Springs Ranch Park.

STRENGTH BUILT FROM WITHIN

FITNESS COACH
PAUL LYNGSO’S
NEW BOOK GUIDES YOU BEYOND RIGID ROUTINES— EMPOWERING YOU TO BUILD LASTING STRENGTH, RESILIENCE, AND A FITNESS PATH THAT’S TRULY YOURS
“To carry someone who is capable of walking is to cripple them for life.”
That quote opens my book, MetaPhysique, and it’s stuck with me ever since I first heard it. It has challenged the way I approach coaching and, ultimately, the way I see fitness as a whole.
In the fitness world, most coaches still follow a familiar script: hand out a strict routine, give step-by-step directions, and expect clients to follow it to the letter. That’s how I was taught to train people over 15 years ago, and that mindset still dominates the industry today.
But here’s what I’ve realized: That rigid, “do-this-exactly” approach is disempowering. It’s a form of carrying someone who’s perfectly capable of walking. And life isn’t rigid. If all you’ve learned is how to follow directions, what happens when you get pushed off the path?
You’re lost.
I didn’t write MetaPhysique to give you turn-by-turn instructions. I wrote it to hand you a map and a compass, so you can keep moving forward, no matter what life throws your way.
I don’t start with answers; I start with questions—because your path is yours to walk.
WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK
Over the years, I’ve coached more than 1,000 people, each with different goals, bodies, and lifestyles. But one pattern shows up again and again: People want to get healthier, stronger, and more confident, yet they feel trapped by someone else’s version of how to do it.
They’re led to believe there’s one “right” way to train, eat, and live—and that if they don’t fit that mold, they’ve failed.
In other words, the modern fitness world is full of gurus selling you their exact method as the only way to succeed. I wrote MetaPhysique to challenge that idea.
There’s a saying I love: “Methods are many; principles are few. Methods always change; principles never do.”
Fitness doesn’t have to look one way. You don’t need to follow what an influencer is doing online. When you understand the core principles of getting in shape, you can create your own method that reflects your goals, your lifestyle, and your values.
I set out to build a flexible, empowering toolkit, not a plug-andplay program. MetaPhysique offers a guide to help you design your own system—one that you actually enjoy enough to stick with.
FITNESS AS A PATH TO MASTERY
Fitness has taught me more about life than almost anything else. It’s where I learned the value of consistency, the importance of showing up even when I don’t feel like it, and how to find meaning in slow, steady progress.
In a world addicted to shortcuts and overnight results, training reminds us that mastery takes time—and that it’s worth it.
That’s why this book matters to me. Fitness isn’t just about reps, macros, or progress photos. It’s a daily practice, a mirror, a teacher. When you commit to improving your body, you build focus, discipline, and resilience. And those skills don’t just stay in the gym; they spill into every part of your life.
Unfortunately, the fitness industry often distracts people from that deeper work. It sells quick fixes and flashy gimmicks. MetaPhysique is my effort to return to something more honest—a place where the work is the reward and fitness reflects who you’re becoming, not just what you’re doing.
A LOCAL INVITATION
I didn’t write this book for celebrities or fitness models; I wrote it for people like you—neighbors, parents, business owners, everyday folks who are tired of starting over and ready to build something sustainable.
MetaPhysique is available now on Amazon. Or, if you’re local, come find me at Mazama or Los Campeones. I’m always happy to chat about training, answer questions, or just connect over the shared journey of building a life that feels good from the inside out.
At the end of the day, the strongest path is the one you make your own.

Dripping Springs City Lifestyle Man of the Year: Tim Allen
ARTICLE BY SARAH LAMBIE PHOTOGRAPHY BY LORELEI MURPHY
From Tragedy to Triumph
When tragedy struck the Allen family on Super Bowl Sunday in 2019, no one could have predicted how their journey would transform not only their own lives but the lives of countless others across the nation.
“I could continue to ask why and be angry, or I could accept that this is the path God chose for Will and me, and move forward.”
Tim Allen was driving his son Will home from baseball practice when a devastating accident left 7-year-old Will with brain and spinal cord injuries, resulting in paralysis from the chest down. In the face of unimaginable pain and heartache, the Dripping Springs community united around the Allens with extraordinary support, from around-the-clock care in the hospital to fundraisers that generated well over $100,000.
"The community rallied around us and lifted us up spiritually, emotionally, and financially," Tim reflects.
At this pivotal moment, Tim made a decision that would define his future. "I had always been a believer, but it wasn't until I experienced this life-threatening situation that my faith was tested," he shares. "Initially, I asked, 'Why did this happen, Jesus?' And then I realized I had a choice. I could continue to ask why and be angry, or I could accept that this is the path God chose for Will and me, and move forward."
Tim and his family chose gratitude, focusing on their three biggest blessings: Will's beating heart, healed brain, and functioning arms.
This shift in perspective led to the creation of the WillPower Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping children and young adults with spinal cord injuries (SCIs).
"I had a good job, good health insurance, good friends, and a good community," Tim explains. "But I realized there are a lot of families out there who don't have that kind of support."
While maintaining his full-time job, Tim, with help from his wife Shara and a few friends, transformed the original fundraisers benefiting Will into annual events benefiting other children and young adults.
To date, the Foundation has assisted 12 young people with SCIs locally and nationwide, including a wheelchair athlete at the University of Alabama who received $25,000 in support.
It has also helped Luca Picucci, a Dripping Springs High School graduate who suffered a SCI in June 2024.
“Since the day Luca was injured, the Foundation has been a support for our family,” says Ali Picucci, Luca’s mother. “They allowed Luca to access critical physical therapy that our family could not have afforded without their support.”
Tim and the Foundation’s support has gone far beyond easing the Picucci family’s financial burden. “Tim and his family have met with us many times,” Ali says. “They really understand what it’s like to go through a spinal cord injury, and we’re so grateful to have their friendship and support.”
Tim’s dedication to helping children and young adults with SCIs doesn't stop with the Foundation. Through Will’s involvement in ATX Abilities Wheelchair Basketball, Tim has also stepped into the role of coach and mentor, guiding and inspiring the next generation of athletes with spinal cord injuries.
While his team has achieved remarkable success on the court—going undefeated and winning national championships—Tim has also made it his mission to provide his players with crucial emotional support.
“They really understand what it’s like to go through a spinal cord injury, and we’re so grateful to have their friendship and support.”
- Ali Picucci
“I don't treat these kids any differently than I would treat kids with an able-bodied basketball team,” Tim says. “I know them. I know their stories. When they get nervous about a game, I can look at them and say, ‘This is nothing compared to what you've been through. Now go out there and have some fun!’”
“We want these kids to feel like they’re a part of a team,” Tim continues. “We’re competitive and we care about winning, but when I can get a kid on the court to smile, it’s a big deal for me.”
Tim is quick to point out that his daughter Kyla, a freshman who plays soccer at Dripping Springs High School, is a “great athlete in her own right.” She has also played an important role in Will’s recovery.
“When Will got out of the hospital, Kyla slept on his top bunk for the first six months so she could help him with anything he needed,” Tim shares. “She’s fiercely loyal and protective of Will.”
He says his wife, Shara, also plays a huge role in Will’s ability to be resilient. “She’s a glass-half-full person,” Tim says. “Throughout it all, she’s always remained positive and reminded us to be thankful for the blessings we have.”
Now 13, Will aspires to become an engineer and Paralympian. Should he choose to, Tim hopes he’ll also take over the Foundation one day, ensuring its impact continues for generations.
Though Tim briefly considered moving away from Dripping Springs after the accident to avoid passing the intersection where it occurred, the overwhelming community support changed his perspective entirely. “I went from thinking we should move to not knowing how I could ever leave this community.”
For his unwavering commitment to paying forward the kindness his family received, his mentorship of young people facing similar challenges, and his vision for creating lasting positive change, Tim Allen has been named Dripping Springs City Lifestyle Man of the Year.
“I just want to try to help others the way I was helped,” Tim says. “I just want to be there for them the way they were there for me.”

BRINGING UNLIKELY TEAMMATES TOGETHER TO HONOR HISTORY, CONFRONT CHALLENGE, AND BUILD UNSHAKABLE CONFIDENCE
PROJECT GRIT
In the early hours of March 27 under a dark Texas sky, Terrence Ogden and 35 adventurous souls set out on a 75-mile journey from Gonzales to the Alamo in San Antonio. They would lug weighted backpacks (rucks) for the next 36 hours, without sleep, to
“THEY
their kids, Ryder and Jessie Jo. “This whole event is about one person pulling another through.
Project Grit is bigger than a single challenge. It’s about stripping away comfort, facing the hard stuff, and doing it shoulder to shoulder.
KNEW IT WAS A ONE-WAY TICKET, AND THEY WENT ANYWAY.”
reach the historic site where so many perished in 1836.
Colonel Travis and more than 150 Texians lost their lives when they were outnumbered by 5,000 soldiers under Mexican General Santa Anna’s command. Among them were 32 courageous men who had rushed from Gonzales, heeding Travis’ plea for reinforcements. These men became known as The Immortal 32.
“They knew it was a one-way ticket, and they went anyway,” says Terrence, who organized the first Immortal 32 Ruck six years ago after learning about the men while visiting the Gonzales Memorial Museum.
“I felt like these guys had been overlooked,” he says. That inspiration sparked what is now the flagship event of Project Grit, the ultra-endurance movement Terrence founded as a testament to his sobriety and a way to help others.
“I was a drug addict, and there was this one, influential person, Kenny, who helped pull me out of the gutter,” says Terrence, now a carpenter living in Wimberley with his wife, Anna, and
The group hosts rucks of various distances; some are ultra, some shorter, but all are designed to push people into growth. These events aren’t just physical; they’re a vehicle to develop your full potential.
One challenge is Terrence’s 1000mile solo ruck across Texas in October. Starting at sea level in Port Arthur and ending atop Mount Cristo Rey, “it’s a symbolic journey from the bottom to the top—ending by giving it all to Christ,” he says.
The group offers several events throughout the year. But it all comes back to Gonzales and the Alamo— where the journey began. As Project Grit’s most symbolic challenge, the annual Immortal 32 Ruck is a tribute to sacrifice, courage, and community.
“It’s hard to put into words what this ruck gives you,” says Megan Singer, the first woman to join the Immortal 32 Ruck. “Each year has brought different lessons. Reaching the Alamo is always deeply emotional. It’s a moment of undeniable confidence—any self-doubt fades. You realize you’re capable of more than you thought.”
Singer, a mom of five from Dripping Springs, says her active life and mindset helped her prepare for the challenge. “Once you’re deep into those miles, it’s not just your body—it’s your mind,” she explains.
“This ruck became more than just miles—it was about proving to myself that I had the strength to do hard things,” Singer continues. She has completed several Project Grit events, including the 31-mile El Camino de Chimayo Ruck, and joins the weekly Rise & Rucks, which depart from Wimberley Square on Saturdays at 6 am.
The group comprises individuals from different backgrounds who share the same veneration for the Immortal 32 and the drive to push beyond comfort zones. “In real life, we probably would’ve never met,” says Terrence. A record 36 participants joined this year’s Immortal 32 Ruck, including three women and a veteran Green Beret with a prosthetic leg.
“I was looking for a challenge, especially being an amputee guy,” says Army Special Forces veteran Daniel Carlton, who lost part of his left leg when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.
Daniel, who lives in New Braunfels with his wife, Juanita, and their eight children, prepped for the Immortal 32 with short rucks and by completing the Austin marathon with Terrence.
“We all signed up for the same, voluntary, misery,” jokes Daniel. “At about mile 60, I was like, ‘I’m never doing this again’—you’re so close, you can see the [San Antonio] skyline.”
"REACHING THE ALAMO IS ALWAYS DEEPLY EMOTIONAL."
“The first half is a beautiful, country stroll, and then you get to Seguin and realize you’re not even halfway through,” says Terrence. “The sun goes down, and it’s dark, cold, and loud. I like to call this stretch the ‘soul crusher.’”
Daniel says his favorite part came half a mile from the Alamo, when Terrence gathered everyone. “He told us how proud he was, and we received a patch. You can’t buy that—it’s earned. That was really special.”
While Project Grit began as a personal journey for Terrence, it’s become a community that gives back. This year’s ruck will benefit two charities: Patriots’ Hall, a veteran’s retreat in Dripping Springs, and If You Can, You Must, a Marine Corps scholarship fund for military children.
“I have to give so much love and gratitude to Terrence and Anna,” says Singer. "What they’re building with Official Project Grit is something special. They’re creating a beautiful community—changing lives through ruck, real conversations, and meaningful support.”

Fireside Chat
12 Fox Gathers Veterans and First Responders for Connection and Healing
ARTICLE BY MELISSA SVOBODA
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARRIN LEWIS
John Kepley, Joe Hogge, John Burns
Something special happens every Monday evening at 12 Fox Beer Co. A motley group—men and women, young and old—greet each other with heartfelt handshakes and hugs, gathering around homey picnic tables in the cozy taproom. A band plays in the corner while guests enjoy a drink, play chess or cards, and catch up with friends.
But this isn’t your typical happy hour. It’s Fireside Chat Support Network—a round-up of veterans and first responders who come together every week in a safe space carved out just for them.
“Fireside Chat is a grassroots gathering born from love, loss, and a shared commitment to healing,” explains Leah Umnitz, F.N.P., a veteran United States Air Force captain.
The weekly event is the realization of a vision conceived by U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Joe Hogge, a veteran and co-owner of 12 Fox Beer Co. along with his wife, Stacey. Their sprawling, tree-lined, Germaninspired biergarten off Fitzhugh Road serves as a serene and familiar home ground for the community meetup.
Joe first imagined Fireside Chat a few years ago after the heartbreaking loss of a highly decorated local veteran who took his own life. Deeply affected by the tragedy, Joe and Stacey felt compelled to do something. “It really hit me,” Joe recalls. “That was my neighbor. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I didn’t wait around; I just did it.”
Today, the group has grown to include more than 120 members, with 30 to 40 regularly meeting each week to connect, share, and support one another. During Fireside Chat, the venue is closed to the public, creating a private space reserved exclusively for the veterans and first responders who attend.
Each Monday, guests casually mingle and chat in small groups. Some sip on beer or soda; others play chess or cards, and many simply talk. “There is no formal agenda— only an open heart and a place at the table,” Umnitz says. “We share meals, stories, resources, and sometimes just a quiet presence. Every night looks different, which is part of the magic.”
Another magic ingredient? Food. At each meeting, attendees enjoy a free meal, often provided by the Dripping Springs Cook-Off Club and other community organizations. Joe is a firm believer in the bonding power of a shared meal. “When you break bread with somebody, you get to know them,” he says.
“Sitting down and having a meal with somebody is a setting that breaks down barriers and allows you to connect.”
Joe’s idea was simple: “To me, the concept of the Fireside Chat was having a group of soldiers standing around the fire, drinking a beer, talking about those things they don’t talk about anywhere else.”
In early 2023, Joe set his plan in motion—and not even an infamous Hill Country ice storm could stop him. The very first Fireside Chat happened to fall on a freezing night, but Joe forged ahead. “It was 28 degrees, and 28 people showed up,” he remembers. “And we haven’t missed a single Monday since.”
Over time, this weekly ritual has transformed the group into something deeper: a family. “It’s a functional family—a place where you can rely on one another, feel loved and cared for, and people are genuinely glad to see you there,” says Ray Sanchez, who served 35 years in the Army.
This particular family is rooted in a unique, unspoken bond. “Being a veteran, no matter what branch of service you’re in, gives you this commonality with other veterans that is hard for non-veterans to understand,” says John Burns, a Navy veteran and current Hays County Justice of the Peace. “This is a way to bring together a group of people who have a fellowship, a brotherhood.”
John Burns
Sanchez emphasizes the importance of having a place where veterans and first responders can share openly about the struggles of post-service life. He explains, “Fireside Chat gives us a platform to meet needs and people right where they are in their journey to better understand the impacts of military service and how we can celebrate or overcome challenges together.”
Many military veterans and first responders carry heavy emotional burdens, and for some, Fireside Chat has literally been a lifeline when they found themselves in deep crisis and at the edge of making irreversible decisions. In four known instances, individuals reached out at their lowest points. In each of those critical moments, fellow members of the Fireside Chat community responded within minutes.
“Joe is saving lives,” states former Los Angeles County Sheriff John Kepley.
Burns adds, “There are people who come who are pushing the limit, and the fact that they have someone to talk to makes all the difference in the world.” He hopes more people will discover the healing power of Fireside Chat’s fellowship and support, saying, “There are other people that are hurting who don’t know about us yet.”
Umnitz sums up the significance of Fireside Chat: “I’ve witnessed the power of presence— how just showing up can be the first step toward healing. It’s not just a gathering. It’s a lifeline, a family, a place to be seen, heard, and reminded that you matter.”
Even after the official Fireside Chat winds down and Joe locks up at the end of a Monday evening, a small group often lingers around the fire pit. As Joe drives away, leaving them in the quiet, firelit glow, he knows what is happening.
“They are doing what I envisioned: They sit around in the dark and chill out, and they just talk,” Joe shares. “And they’ve truly become this band of brothers and sisters.”
“I’ve witnessed the power of presence— how just showing up can be the first step toward healing. It’s not just a gathering. It’s a lifeline, a family, a place to be seen, heard, and reminded that you matter.”
EXPANDING THE MISSION
Beyond fostering camaraderie and connection, Joe is committed to supporting the physical and mental well-being of veterans and first responders. He hopes to expand Fireside Chat’s offerings by providing access to wellness resources and treatments—starting with the purchase of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, which would be available to members at no cost. Fireside Chat Support Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and welcomes donations and community support to help make these healing tools a reality.

There’s a certain dignity in coming home from work with sweat on your brow, dust on your boots, and the satisfaction of knowing you made someone’s day better—maybe even saved a life. The trades don’t always come with spotlight moments or shiny offices, but they carry something deeper: purpose, skill, and an unwavering commitment to serve.
From pest control to waste services, HVAC to excavation, these are the crews who handle things most people would rather ignore. They show up on weekends and holidays— through freezing mornings and blistering afternoons—to crawl into muddy, infested spaces, climb into 160-degree attics, and balance on rooftops to keep our homes safe, our air breathable, and our communities running.
Here are some stories from the Dripping Springs crews who are willing to show up, get dirty, and give their all to serve their neighbors. The work may not be glamorous, but it’s needed and it’s noble. For the guys in the trenches, that’s what makes it beautiful.
Local Pros Tackle Dirty Jobs with Grit, Humor, and Pride

At a service call for roach activity, I was under the home when I heard a rustling, whishing sound getting louder. As I raised my flashlight, I encountered a wall of roaches—all very healthy, large, and flying! I did my best to keep my mouth shut as I retreated as fast as possible out of the space. I was almost naked in that client’s yard getting them off me. Sometimes I can still feel those tarsal claws on my neck.
Another time, I received a call about a skunk messing up a client’s garden. So, I grabbed my trap and headed out to handle it. After a few days, I finally got that sucker … little did I know, a trapped skunk isn’t a safe skunk. That rascal was locked and loaded when I went to grab the trap, and all I saw was a cloud of yellow skunk stank coming straight for my face—direct hit! After simultaneously throwing up and crying, I tossed a blanket over the trap, collected what was left of my pride, and headed home after a job … well, done.
The story of this unforgettable experience takes me back a couple of decades … My crew and I were installing an HVAC system and all the ducts in a home that was over 100 years old. It was quite a job. The workspace was underneath the house and, thanks to recent rains, the ground was a muddy mess. We had to remove ancient ducts, dodge bare electrical wires, and install all new sheet metal.
In that cramped, mucky crawlspace, we found dead snakes, rodents, and even a raccoon that had gotten stuck in the HVAC and didn’t make it. We drew straws to see who was on removal duty, and the new guy, in his first week on the job, drew the short one. It may have been a rough start, but it didn’t scare him off—he’s still with us today, and he is one of those co-workers who became a lifelong friend.

It started like any other day on a route through a quiet neighborhood—until one of our waste trucks suddenly burst into flames. Within seconds, fire erupted inside the truck’s load, forcing the driver and helper to spring into action.
They quickly called 9-1-1 and grabbed fire extinguishers to contain the blaze until North Hays County Fire and EMS arrived. To fully extinguish the fire, the crew had to dump the burning trash directly onto the street. Then came the real grind: hand-shoveling nearly 20 cubic yards of scorched, smoldering, stinking garbage back into the truck … one scoop at a time.
The cause? A dangerous combination of discarded pool chlorine tablets and a gasoline can tossed into a residential trash bin—a stark reminder of the risks of improper hazardous waste disposal. Thanks to the crew’s quick thinking and the fast emergency response, no one was hurt and the truck was saved from serious damage.

In Texas, you can’t live without a septic system or some way to dispose of wastewater. And when my phone rings about septic, it usually means someone’s system is one flush away from disaster.
On a particularly long and busy day, I needed to bail out water from a tank. After installing a pump and piping, everything was set up—until I plugged in the pump. Boom! The elbow on the pipe blew off and launched a 20-foot wastewater geyser straight into the air … and then all over me. After all, what goes up must come down.
The homeowner rushed outside, saw me coughing up tank water and pulling everything out of my pockets, and—without a word—walked back into the house.
So I did what any pro does: embraced the grind, finished the job, and mentally prepared to scrub my truck (and myself!) when I got home. Back at the shop, one of my guys, also soaked, looked at me as I stepped out—shirtless, barefoot, and dripping—and said, “Let’s do it again Monday!”
RAISING FUNDS FOR THE NEW DRIPPING SPRINGS COMMUNITY LIBRARY AT BIRDIES & BOOKS GOLF TOURNAMENT
ARTICLE BY CHRISTINA THOMPSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGE SCHEMAGIN
Not even a rainy forecast could stop the community from coming together for a good cause at the Birdies & Books Golf Tournament, held March 27 at Grey Rock Golf Club.
The tournament was presented by Dripping Springs City Lifestyle magazine, with additional sponsorship from MPOWER, a business alliance for women entrepreneurs, along with many other generous supporters (see page 65).
Despite wet conditions, over 100 golfers teed off in support of the Dripping Springs Community Library (DSCL), raising more than $44,000 toward its future expansion. Participants braved the rain with smiles, camaraderie, and a shared mission to support local literacy and lifelong learning.
“While the weather may have been rainier than expected, thanks to the support of our sponsors, golfers, and volunteers, the Birdies & Books Golf Tournament was a huge success,” says Missy Atwood, DSCL board president. “We’re incredibly grateful that golfers chose to spend the rainy day with us—playing golf, enjoying great company, and helping raise funds for our new library.”
Before teeing off, attendees were treated to a lunch from Chickfil-A Belterra and interacted with sponsors that set up informational booths and offered incredible raffle prizes. Following the round, they enjoyed a delicious dinner from Hays City Store, sweet treats from Fancy Eats & Sweets, and Flight Ice Creams served up a creative menu of golf-themed flavors while round and raffle winners were announced.
Organizers credited the event’s success to the dedication of sponsors, volunteers, and players who showed up in force, rain gear in hand, for a day of fun and fundraising.
Plans for the new library continue to move forward, bolstered by the community’s generosity and enthusiasm. “We can’t thank this community enough for helping us take this big step toward our new library,” Atwood says.
For more information about the new DSCL and how to contribute, visit DSCL.com/future, and follow @dsbeyondbooks for future fundraising events.
Thanks to the support of these generous sponsors and golfers, the Birdies & Books Golf Tournament raised more than $44,000 for the new Dripping Springs Community Library.

SPORTING SANCTUARY
Hog Heaven Sporting Club: A Hill Country Haven for Outdoor Enthusiasts
Just 30 miles from the buzzing streets of downtown Austin lies a slice of rugged Texas paradise: Hog Heaven Sporting Club in Dripping Springs. Spread across 120 scenic acres, this sporting club lives up to its name, offering an outdoorsman’s dream of open space, camaraderie, and challenge.
Hog Heaven Sporting Club is a thoughtfully designed retreat for those who enjoy sporting clays, archery, pistol shooting, and angling. Whether you're honing your skills on the sporting clays course, perfecting your draw at the archery range, running your pistol for time, or casting into the spring-fed stocked lake, the experience is rooted in craft and connection to the outdoors.

But it’s more than wide-open spaces and targets. The grounds also include a party pavilion perfect for gatherings, and members can take advantage of extras like physical training classes and the expert-led Carbine Club program. On special nights, members gather for exclusive dinners on the bridge, surrounded by nature, good food, and better company.
The club was built for accessibility—both in location and experience. Conveniently situated in the middle of Dripping Springs, it’s a quick drive to sneak in a few hours of fresh air between the demands of daily life. That simplicity is part of the appeal. Rather than heading to a remote lodge, you simply step into a slower rhythm right off Ranch Road 12.
The club’s culture is grounded in three core rules: be safe, be respectful, and leave politics at the gate. Whether you’re new to the outdoors or a seasoned marksman, these values keep the experience welcoming, focused, and fun for everyone.
For seasoned shooters, outdoor-loving families, or professionals seeking a oneof-a-kind team-building space, Hog Heaven Sporting Club is about belonging. It’s a place where people come together over tradition, sport, and the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country.
Memberships are available in both individual and corporate plans, with access to all activities and amenities, plus perks like retail discounts, hunting opportunities, and exclusive social events. But members often talk less about the benefits and more about the experience—the chance to unplug, train, connect, and reset.
Don’t wait too long to schedule your private tour. Membership is limited, and once you set foot on these 120 acres, you’ll understand why.

FROM CREATIVE DREAMS TO PURPOSEFUL DIRECTION
A REFLECTION ON LESSONS LEARNED WHILE GROWING WITH CREATIVITY, INTEGRITY, AND INTENTION
“Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.” This saying is starting to become more relevant as I watch and see our company grow. Success rarely follows a straight line no matter how much you plan or strategize.
ARTICLE BY NICK CASTER PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE KOZLENKO
One of the first in-house projects Caster Studios created is a children’s show called “Gus Plus Us.” In 2020, our goal was to make a show that brought families joy while respecting the mind of a child. Our plan was to create a full season in 2021, but at the time we were a small company with big dreams. We only had one employee, plus some friends and family willing to help. During production, we had about 10 crew members and 60 kid extras. It was organized chaos.
In this industry, we tend to put all our eggs into one basket. We thrive on vision, ambition, and long hours, so it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of releasing it to the audience.
When season one was ready to release in 2022, we started pitching the show to platforms and distributors that we believed would help us reach a wide audience and help fund the production costs, but that didn’t happen.
“A MAN’S HEART PLANS HIS WAY, BUT THE LORD DIRECTS HIS STEPS.” - PROVERBS 16:9
During this time, the film industry was shaky. The coronavirus pandemic and strikes had affected everyone in the business and made it even more difficult for new shows to get picked up. So we went back to the drawing board.
We ended up releasing the show for free to multiple platforms, building relationships and viewers. Still, it felt like a loss. Creating a show is expensive and hard work. We knew that, without an offer, it might be a very slow and costly project to continue. Months went by while we tried to force things to make sense.
Then we learned God had other plans. We got a call from a media company in search of original shows to help launch its new platform for children and families. I knew right away this was an answer to prayer. They wanted to launch the platform with season one and also fund season two right away, with the possibility of filming up to five seasons.
Proverbs 16:9 tells us, “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” Life is unpredictable. I’m still learning that things may not always go as we expect or plan, and that’s okay. I can
allow room for adjustments while remaining open to God’s direction. To this day, the show continues to amaze us.
We recently wrapped up filming season three of “Gus Plus Us,” pushing the creative boundaries and scope to new limits and elevating the entire production. It’s become one of Texas’ flagship productions, stretching from 10 crew members to 40, and 60 kid extras to 300. Our audience has also grown immensely, launching us to the platform’s number-one show. Now, we look forward to seeing where the release of season three takes it.
But whatever happens, this show will always be known as our first Caster Studios original. Our internal team has grown and so have our projects. We continue to produce with quality, integrity, and purpose, giving God the glory in the small and big wins.
“Don’t count your chickens before they hatch” is a reminder to live with humility, trust in God’s timing, and embrace the journey rather than the outcome.

Some businesses are built on opportunity. Longhorn Pools, however, is built on a vision rooted in craftsmanship, family values, and a deep connection to the community. This full-service boutique pool company proudly serves Dripping Springs and the surrounding Hill Country.
“We originally started Longhorn Pools as a dedicated builder for custom home projects,” says co-founder Chris Cockrell. “It was all about quality work, mostly in the background, partnering with builders who trusted us to deliver.”
Backyard Dreams
As the real estate market boomed during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, the team at Longhorn Pools stayed busy, but they also knew the wave wouldn’t last forever.
“My business partner and I made a conscious decision to pivot early. We wanted to work directly with homeowners to create custom pools,” Chris explains. That decision, he says, completely transformed the way they saw their work.
“Now, it’s not just about building a pool. It’s about bringing someone’s dream to life, helping them create a space where they’ll make memories for years to come,” he says. “There’s nothing better than seeing a client’s face light up at the finished product.”
What sets Longhorn Pools apart is its boutique approach. Rather than taking on as many projects as possible, the team prioritizes quality over volume, allowing them to stay hands-on with every build and maintain the high standards they’re known for.
“We take the time to truly understand each client’s vision and bring it to life in a way that feels personal and lasting,” Chris says.
Longhorn Pools designs and builds complete outdoor spaces that elevate everyday living. This includes pools and spas, hardscapes, and full landscaping renovations. “We have the ability to fully transform a backyard,” he explains.
That personalized approach reflects the team’s commitment to being part of the community it serves. In 2022, Chris and his family relocated to Dripping Springs. “The small-town charm and strong sense of community immediately stood out,” he says.
Chris recalls visiting a local distillery that was buzzing with energy on a sunny afternoon. “We saw families gathered, kids playing on the playscapes, and people just enjoying the beautiful weather together. It was a kind of atmosphere we hadn’t experienced before, and it made a lasting impression on us.”
The move wasn’t their first in Texas. From north Houston and east Texas to downtown Austin and Lubbock, where both Chris and his wife, Shana, graduated from Texas Tech University, they had experienced many parts of the Lone Star State, but none compared to the Hill Country.
The views were absolutely breathtaking, something we hadn’t experienced anywhere else we’d lived,” Chris says. “We saw families gathering, kids running around, and it just felt like home.
Deeply embedded in the Dripping Springs community, the Cockrell family has embraced everything from education to baseball. Shana works for the school district, and their two boys, aged 12 and 8, have fully leaned into the area’s rich sports culture.
“If we’re not at a practice or a tournament, we’re usually exploring all the great local spots nearby. It’s been a busy but rewarding chapter for our family,” says Chris.
That local connection shapes the way Longhorn Pools does business.
“Working with local clients means a lot to us; it’s personal. We take immense pride in our work because we’re building for people we might see at Friday night football games, school events, or down the street at H-E-B. That kind of trust is something we don’t take lightly,” Chris shares.
“The small-town feel is something built and preserved by generations of families who take immense pride in this community. We truly admire that,” he continues.
That same pride runs through every project Longhorn Pools takes on.
“There’s something really special about helping neighbors bring their vision to life and creating spaces where families can truly enjoy their time together,” says Chris. “We’re not just building pools; we’re building memories for families right here in our community.”

THE TEAM
At Longhorn Pools, family and community connection are at the heart of the business. The team includes Chris’s business partner, Bryan, and his wife, as well as Andrew, who leads sales for the company. Andrew, along with his wife and son, are proud to call Dripping Springs home.
BUILT TO protect others
THE MEN BEHIND LINDEMANN GROUP’S MISSION
ARTICLE BY WHITNIE STRAUSS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAIRE MULKEY
For Bruce Porterfield, protecting others isn’t just a profession; it’s a continuation of his life’s work.
As the founder of Lindemann Group, a private security firm specializing in executive protection, Porterfield leads a team of elite individuals from the country’s premier military, law enforcement, and intelligence organizations. Alongside his business partner and co-founder, Adam Pietrzak—a retired Navy SEAL who spent a decade with SEAL Team Six, the nation’s most elite counter-terrorism unit—Bruce has built a company trusted by celebrities, corporate leaders, and high-net-worth individuals.
But if you ask him, it’s not about the apparent allure of the job; it’s about providing the best possible service to his clients.
“Some would say I’m obsessed with always refining and improving our tactics, techniques, and procedures as it relates to protecting our clients. My wife would probably tell you I spend far too much time chasing that perfection, to the detriment of time spent with our family.” However, Porterfield says, “My primary obligation outside of work is maximizing quality time with my family, which can be challenging in this line of work, but that will always take priority.”
That innate drive to protect others has guided every chapter of his career, from his time in the military and law enforcement to his current role leading a global security firm with an unwavering, hands-on presence.
A LEGACY OF SERVICE
Porterfield’s sense of duty is deeply rooted in family history. His father, a World War II-era Marine who fought in the Korean War’s most grueling battles, never pushed his children to serve. But something about those quiet stories—tales of Pusan, Inchon, and the Chosin Reservoir— stuck with Porterfield.
Porterfield joined the Young Marines when he was 11, a decision that eventually led him to Texas A&M’s Corps of Cadets, followed by a commission as a Naval officer. He served eight years on active duty and remains in the reserves nearly two decades later, where he serves as chief of staff for the United States Special Operations Command-North.
Even after transitioning from military life, Porterfield wasn’t ready to hang up his sense of mission. He spent a decade in law enforcement, eventually leading him to executive protection—a field that allowed him to continue serving, albeit in a different capacity.
“While not ‘serving’ in the traditional sense of community, state, or nation, we serve and protect our clients and their families,” Porterfield says. “We bring with us decades of applicable experience that’s invaluable in the private sector.”
BUILDING A WORLD-CLASS TEAM
While Porterfield is quick to deflect attention from himself, those who know him recognize the leadership he brings to Lindemann Group. The company has grown to include a core team based in Texas, with a highly selective network of affiliates across the country and internationally.
That elite circle includes veterans of military special operations, intelligence, and both federal and local law enforcement. But technical skill alone isn’t enough. Porterfield emphasizes the importance of “soft skills” like emotional intelligence, discretion, and adaptability.
The operators he hires are not only highly trained and experienced, but also hand-picked based on one critical requirement: the ability to build rapport with anyone.
“In this field, you spend an incredible amount of time interacting with the public on behalf of your clients, so it’s vitally important that you not only present yourself well, but serve as an ambassador for your clients,” Porterfield explains. “People will judge them based on your behavior. You have to know when to be diplomatic and when to be direct.”
“Depending on the client, one might find themselves at the White House one day and a child’s soccer game the next,” he continues. “Knowing when to be social and when to be a fly on the wall is crucial.”
Lindemann Group’s ability to blend into any environment, anticipate threats, and de-escalate situations without force is a testament to Porterfield’s philosophy: The best protection feels invisible.
WHY CLIENTS CALL
Lindemann Group clientele aren’t always facing an immediate threat. More often, they’re focused on preventing one. That prevention can take many forms, from securing local and international travel, to providing active shooter response training for corporate teams, to offering firearms and situational awareness training for individuals and groups. Sometimes a client might require immediate protection, such as during a hostile divorce with threats of violence or an adverse corporate termination. Porterfield and his team provide peace of mind in an unpredictable world. Their clients seek discretion, competence, and calm professionalism that comes only from years of real-world experience.
BEHIND THE GLAMOUR
From the outside, executive protection may appear sleek and thrilling and conjure images of suits, motorcades, and luxury travel. But Porterfield is candid about the realities behind the curtain.
“There’s an extraordinary amount of administrative work that goes on behind the scenes,” he says, including days of advance work, coordination with law enforcement, route mapping, contingency planning, and medical preparedness. “It’s not glamorous, but it’s essential. People also need to keep in mind that while we might be
accompanying a client to an exotic locale, we’re not on vacation. We’re working the entire time.”
That level of detail and preparation comes with a personal cost, like long hours, last-minute travel, and missed birthdays, holidays, and school events. For the men at Lindemann Group, the job doesn’t always end when the client goes home. “With some clients, you’re always on call,” says Porterfield.
“Burnout is a real challenge,” he admits. “You’re essentially living your client’s life and schedule, which can be brutal. One of our teams recently worked 75 hours in four days, then had to jump right back into a full week of work.”
Still, the team dynamic offers support that few outsiders understand. “Because of the time spent together, you get to know your teammates extraordinarily well, and we look out for each other,” Porterfield shares. “Humor and a positive attitude are critical, just like in the military or law enforcement.”
THE POWER OF THE TEAM
Porterfield may be the founder, but he’s the first to say Lindemann Group’s success is built on the backs of the exceptional men who work alongside him, many of whom are legends in their own right, with decades of experience in military leadership, federal law enforcement, and high-level security operations.
“This work is only possible because of the team,” Porterfield says. “We each bring something to the table, and together we put in the hours, solve problems in real time, and hold ourselves to the highest standard of integrity and professionalism.”
“We bring with us decades of applicable experience that’s invaluable in the private sector.”
It’s a team built on mutual respect, shared values, and years of operating in environments where trust is non-negotiable. Together, they form the backbone of Lindemann Group’s reputation as an elite unit forged in service, refined in the field, and united by purpose.
A MISSION THAT MATTERS
Despite its challenges, Porterfield is unwavering in his commitment to the work. He’s driven to protect his clients while building a company where others like him can thrive.
“The phenomenal feedback we receive from our clients is rewarding,” he says. “But giving others the opportunity to make a great living while providing world-class service is a close second.”
For Porterfield, Lindemann Group is a continuation of a life spent in service, built on a foundation of honor, humility, and excellence. It’s where men of service continue their mission of guarding others, supporting each other, and honoring the calling to protect.

MATT KLEPAC CREATES A COMPANY TO WORK WITH GREATER PURPOSE
OutdoorJack
ARTICLE BY WHITNIE STRAUSS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACY BERG
“We want our community to help build our philanthropy. This is neighbors helping neighbors.”
When Matt Klepac left behind the high-powered world of tech and the spotlight of opera, he wasn’t chasing greener pastures. He was looking for a purpose.
Today, you won’t find him behind a desk or on a stage. Matt is now outside walking lawns, inspecting pool pumps, and helping neighbors through his home services company, OutdoorJack. But to call OutdoorJack just a “home services” company would be missing the point.
At OutdoorJack, the work they do outside, like mowing, power washing, and pool cleaning, is about creating space inside for what matters most: family, rest, and connection. “We believe a clean home, a well-kept lawn, and a sparkling pool are more than just aesthetics,” says Klepac. “They’re about creating a space where life happens.”
It was a church sermon and a gentle tug from his faith that called Klepac to take action—not toward the pulpit, but toward serving others through business. “I had spent years growing in knowledge and faith,” he explains, “but I wasn’t yet living it out in a way that served others.”
Driven by this vision to create a local business rooted in generosity, Klepac stepped away from corporate life and began building something with deeper meaning.
A HEART FOR SERVICE
OutdoorJack is about much more than clean yards; it’s about community. “We take outdoor chores off people’s plates so they can enjoy their homes,” Klepac shares. “But we also wanted to lift burdens for families who need support.”
That’s where its BG3 Program comes in, short for Bundle, Google, Give Good. When customers bundle services, leave reviews, and spread the word, their
support helps provide free services for local families in need, elderly neighbors, single parents, or anyone going through a tough time.
“We’re not a nonprofit, and that’s intentional,” Klepac explains. “We want our community to help build our philanthropy. This is neighbors helping neighbors in the most practical way.”
TECH REFUGEES ON A MISSION
The OutdoorJack team is made up of what Klepac calls “tech refugees”: former professionals who walked away from fast-paced careers to pursue something more meaningful.
“We’re a mix of missionaries, executives, and service-minded folks,” Klepac says. “Most of us never imagined we’d be in this line of work, but we’ve found real purpose in showing up, working hard, and serving people well.”
That team includes co-founders Rhett Harstfield and Cortney Smith, who joined Klepac in launching OutdoorJack with a shared passion for people and service. Harstfield, the big-hearted delivery guy, brings his background in education, ministry, and Software as a Service to lead customer experience with care and precision. Smith, the community-building people guy, drives outreach, partnerships, and growth while fostering meaningful connections throughout the Hill Country.
Together, the trio blends business chops, servant leadership, and a love for their neighbors to make OutdoorJack something different. They've created a company built to perform and care.
The team sees its work as a way to love people through small, everyday acts. “Every yard we mow, every deck we clean, every pool we maintain is all done with the heart of a servant, a neighbor, and a friend.”
“
“We’ve found real purpose in showing up, working hard, and serving people well.”
DEEPLY ROOTED IN COMMUNITY
In addition to serving customers, OutdoorJack shows up at local events, partners with schools, and sponsors community programs. “Dripping Springs is more than just where we work; it’s our home,” Klepac says. “We want to be the kind of business that makes life better for the people around us.”
And their customers are not just clients; they’re part of the mission.
READY TO JOIN THE MOVEMENT?
Whether your backyard needs a boost or your soul needs a reminder that good still exists, OutdoorJack is proof that even pool cleaning can have a purpose. With every task completed, they’re quietly transforming the community, one act of service at a time.
In the end, it’s not just about clean yards. It’s about open hands, servant hearts, and the courage to go.

“THOR originally stood for Texas Hunting and Off-Road,” says Whitlock. “I started by building hunting trucks. It was a perfect fit because I’ve always had a passion for building vehicles that serve a real purpose.”
That passion began early. “My first truck was when I was 12 years old,” he laughs. “I was always modifying, lifting, and always had the coolest truck in my peer group. So this was an easy transition to making everyday trucks super capable.”
Founded by trusted local fabricator and lifelong truck enthusiast Jamey Whitlock, THOR Off-Road has become one of Texas’ premier destinations for high-performance off-road customization. Purposebuilt dream vehicles are crafted with precision, passion, and a whole lot of horsepower.
“When you modify your vehicle, you want to know you actually made an upgrade. That’s the confidence we provide.”
The evolution from hunting rigs to high-end off-road machines took shape when Whitlock connected with Carli Suspension, a renowned California-based suspension company. From there, his vision grew.
Now, THOR Off-Road is known for creating vehicles that are as capable as they are cool. But it’s not just about flashy modifications. It’s about building trucks with purpose.
“Everyone has a different journey,” Whitlock says. “Some need a truck to haul their family in comfort. Others want a trail beast. We help them figure out what’s really important, then build something that fits their lifestyle.”
One standout build was a 2024 RAM 3500, originally equipped with factory rear air leveling—infamous for its rough ride. THOR transformed it into a longhaul towing machine with smooth ride quality, advanced lighting for all conditions, a custom stainless steel shell and drawer system, a 55-gallon fuel tank, and 37-inch tires that let it dominate any terrain. It’s not just a truck—it’s a road warrior’s dream. “It is a commanding, menacing-looking truck with all the bells and whistles everywhere it counts,” Whitlock says.
While THOR Off-Road’s specialty is heavy-duty truck suspension, the shop is a full-service, turnkey custom builder. Whitlock is proud to be the only stocking Carli Suspension dealer in Texas and keeps premium inventory from Icon Dynamics, Cognito, and BDS Suspension—brands not typically found in generic truck accessory shops.
“The quality of the products we offer and our expert installation set us apart,” he says. “When you modify your vehicle, you want to know you actually made an upgrade. That’s the confidence we provide.”
While many of Whitlock’s clients come from across the country, Dripping Springs remains the heart of the business.
“I’ve lived here 19 years, and I’m a fifth-generation Drip guy,” he says. “I love this community.”
Whitlock’s goal is simple: “I want people to walk away from working with me knowing they got the best I had to give—and be completely happy with their experience.”
