“We highly recommend Kim Burke. We went with her after being with another agent for 9 months with no offers. She expertly guided us through the process to stage and list our home. We received a full price offer in a very difficult market after being listed for only a few months with her. She skillfully advised us through a challenging contract negotiation and closing as well. We would highly recommend Kim to anyone looking to buy or sell a home!”

“Sold before it was on the market! Kim has an amazing ability to identify exactly what needs to be done to sell your house. She was able to sell it before it was even on the market and it went smooth. She makes sure you are educated on every detail and fights for you along the way. Welcome Home,
The Spirit of Exploration
When I stop to truly reflect on exploration and what it means, it makes me a little sentimental. If we really peel back the layers, it’s at the core of every significant moment in our lives. From the wide-eyed curiosity of childhood to the bold steps our ancestors took to shape this country, exploration is what propels us forward. It’s intrinsic to the very essence of being human and our innate, unquenchable thirst to see what lies beyond the familiar, to venture into the unknown, and to discover something remarkable.
When we’re young, exploration is how we learn about the world. It’s the scraped knees from tree-climbing, the first splash into the deep end, and the fearless declaration that we can do anything. As adults, it’s the leap of faith in starting a new business, deciding to help someone in need, or even setting out on the simple, satisfying quest to find the best cold drink in town.
Exploration is a byproduct of curiosity and courage. It’s a mix of wonder and risk and the willingness to step off the beaten path to take a chance. Whether it’s embarking on a summer road trip, diving into a new hobby, or just taking a moment to explore our own thoughts, these moments shape us.
In this issue, we’re leaning into that spirit and celebrating the adventures, big and small, that make life so vibrant. Here’s to the explorers among us who never stop searching for what’s next. After all, the best journeys always begin with a spark of curiosity.

OFF the beaten PATH
Just a few miles off the rush of Highway 290 and down a bumpy gravel road, the landscape opens and an unexpected world unfolds. Scattered across wide fields of wildflowers and prickly grasses rest centuries-old stone buildings and original cattle chutes, timeworn and sturdy. Down a gentle slope, Barton Creek rustles over rocks, and a massive oak stands, its limbs outstretched like weathered arms protecting the stories of generations past.
“The hidden gems are tucked away all over Dripping Springs,” says Stephanie Pope, a realtor with NestHaven Properties. “There are surprises around every corner.”
Pope is just the person to unearth these real estate treasures. With 14 years in the industry under her leather belt, she combines a love for people with her deep affection for Dripping Springs to help clients discover their perfect property. “I love meeting people and hearing their stories, and if you’re a really good listener, you can tap into things that they don’t even know they want,” she says. “The whole journey of learning people and finding their home is so rewarding.”

Dripping Springs’ Best-Kept Secrets
ARTICLE BY MELISSA SVOBODA PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAIRE MULKEY
Pope’s ability to genuinely connect with her clients stems from professional experience as well as something far more personal. Through enduring the betrayal, loss, and pain of an abusive relationship, Pope has developed an empathy that allows her to truly meet people where they are, with authenticity and compassion.
As she gets to know her clients, Pope guides them to uncover what makes Dripping Springs special. From her NestHaven Properties office, located in an iconic limestone house right in the heart of the town, she urges people to experience Drip by visiting quintessential places like Patriots’ Hall, Dripping Springs Distilling, Hudson's on Mercer, Reimers Ranch, and more.
“It’s not just about exploring the real estate opportunities we have,” she notes. “It’s also about exploring the town, from the music scene to dining, recreation, the schools, the Friday Night Lights. There’s something here for everybody.”
With real estate opportunities ranging from small, garden-style homes to sprawling ranches, Pope has the creativity to help clients find just the right fit. “I encourage people to step out of the box a little bit,” she says. “It’s not just the house or the grass it sits on; it’s everything around it—the whole experience.”
Pope recalls such a property that revealed unexpected charm: “It looked like just a little cabin in the middle of the grass, but then if you explored, it was pretty spectacular.”
Secreted away was a stunning box canyon filled with caves, ferns, and literal dripping springs. They even encountered a wild turkey with her young poults in tow. “That place was amazing,” she remembers. “And if you weren’t ready to explore, you would never know it.”
While stepping out of the comfort zone might feel intimidating, Pope knows something about being fearless. “I want people to know that I’m a strong survivor and that I’m an advocate, a listener,” she shares. “I love helping people. If it’s helping them buy or sell a house, that’s great. And if it’s helping them get through a difficult personal situation, then I’m here.”
Just as she helps her clients explore the hills and hollows of Dripping Springs to uncover the perfect home, she has navigated her own rough terrain, emerging grounded, glowing, and deeply attuned to others. Sometimes, the most beautiful places—and our own exquisite strength—are discovered just off the beaten path.
NESTHAVEN PROPERTIES: WHERE REAL ESTATE FEELS LIKE HOME

NestHaven proudly sponsors some of Dripping Springs’ most beloved traditions, including Founders Day, the Eggstravaganza helicopter egg drop, Songwriters Festival, and Christmas on Mercer. “We want to tap into the community; that’s what it’s all about,” says Pope. “We want to serve the community that we live in, work in, and play in.”

DAVE WILSON PHOTOGRAPHY
When Connie and Denis McGovern first arrived in Dripping Springs in 1985, they found a rural haven hidden in the hills with just one traffic light and one grocery store.
What was then a quiet and affordable town has since morphed into a booming suburb with median home prices of $672,000 (Redfin).
As the city's population soared, so has the cost of living. And not all residents have managed to stay afloat.
After Denis suffered a debilitating head injury in 2009, Connie took on more work—cleaning houses as well as cooking at Hudson’s on Mercer and at Hill Country Nursing and Rehab—to make ends meet.
“My husband's injury and the increase in the cost of living required me to start working three jobs,” Connie explains.
The McGoverns lived in a manufactured home in west Dripping Springs she inherited from her parents. While they didn't have a mortgage, the aging structure was rapidly deteriorating and required expensive repairs.
“It was already 30 years old when my parents bought it, and they aren't built to last very long,” Connie says.
She remembers the moment she realized it was no longer safe for her family: “There was a big hole in the floor,” Connie recalls. “The day my grandbaby was born, I realized it wasn't a safe place for him.”
HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT
This is where exploring Dripping Springs takes on new meaning. Beyond the breweries and wedding venues that draw visitors from across Texas lies another Dripping Springs—one with generational families living in homes dating back to the 1950s through 1970s.
“They need help, but you wouldn't know it. They're hidden in plain sight,” says Chris Kelker-Newlan, operations manager at Hometown Missions, a local faith-based nonprofit that builds and repairs homes for neighbors in need.
“They could sell their land for a lot of money, but that’s not what they want,” Kelker-Newlan explains. “Dripping Springs is their home, and they are our neighbors. They work in our stores, our restaurants, and school district. They cook and serve our food and take care of our elderly.”
“WHEN I SEE THE FAMILIES WE’VE HELPED COME OUT AND HELP ON A PROJECT, IT WARMS MY HEART.”
Despite skyrocketing property values, “they don't want to leave, and they shouldn't have to,” Kelker-Newlan says.
This is certainly the case for Connie.
“This is where I want to be. I love Dripping Springs,” she shares. “I can’t imagine living anywhere else.”
When traditional financial institutions turned Connie away, her longtime family banker connected her with Hometown Missions, which determined the McGoverns qualified for their “Home in a Month” program.
The organization carefully considers sustainability, ensuring families can remain in their new or repaired homes without being taxed out of their properties.
“We're never going to give someone a new home if it's going to tax them out of their place,” says Kelker-Newlan.
EXPLORING TRANSFORMING EXPERIENCES
What makes Hometown Missions unique is the dual transformation it creates—both for families receiving help and volunteers giving it.
“Some of our neighbors can’t have friends or family come over because of the state of their homes," Kelker-Newlan says.
“Our hope is to bring them back into the community by restoring their homes.”
For volunteers, the experience offers a chance to explore the true meaning of service.
“Answering the call to help your neighbor is one of the most powerful examples of what Christianity is supposed to be,” Kelker-Newlan reflects. “It inspires and spreads the message: Love your neighbor.”
Connie says Hometown Missions helped her family in a time of desperation.
“Hometown Missions was my last hope,” she says. “It means everything to me and my family to have a safe and healthy home. This will be our forever home.”
Connie says she plans to volunteer with Hometown Missions on future projects. This kind of response is one of the reasons Kelker-Newlan does what he does.
“When I see the families we’ve helped come out and help on a project, it warms my heart,” he shares. “It reinforces a strong sense of community. We all live here and we all love living here.”
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
So far this year, six families have requested assistance; the McGoverns’ home was the third replacement project completed.
For Connie, who has watched Dripping Springs evolve from a one-stoplight town to a thriving suburb, Hometown Missions has made it possible to remain part of the community she loves.
“I’m so excited to live, love, and laugh in our new home, and I’m truly honored to live in Dripping,” she says.
Volunteers ages 12 and older of all skill levels are always needed. Donations support Hometown Missions’ goal of funding one to two home builds, two to three mobile home replacements, and numerous repair projects annually. Donations can be made online or by check.

Facing Fertility Challenges, Ryan and Merissa Hayes Explore an Unconventional Path, Transforming Their Lives and Inspiring a Mission-Driven Meat Snack Brand
It might surprise you to hear that my wife Merissa—co-founder of our meat-based snack company Stoke Provisions—used to be a vegan. Clean eating was more than just a diet for Merissa; it was a philosophy. Then a doctor’s unusual suggestion changed everything.
Our story started out like so many others. After two years of dating, we had the wedding of our dreams. Everything was going as planned, but as the honeymoon bliss faded into normal everyday life, we knew we wanted more. We had always dreamed of having children together. This is where our struggles began.
A SURPRISING IDEA
Merissa connected with a renowned specialist from Colorado for a phone conversation before starting to work together. This doctor's advice changed our lives. Merissa has always been a person who seeks out clean foods and pays close attention to what she puts in her body. This healthy eating led her to become a vegan, eliminating meats and dairy from her diet. The doctor recommended a course of action we were not expecting. He suggested we stop worrying so much about getting pregnant and take a vacation. He also thought Merissa should introduce meat back into her diet as a way to increase her iron and protein.
The first year of marriage can be a time of adjustment, and we were no different. Merissa and I enjoyed the challenges of living and growing together, but during this time, we lost two of our loved ones. Merissa's mother died due to heart complications, and my youngest brother lost his battle with brain cancer. It definitely left a hole in our hearts. Added stress is never a good thing, especially when trying to get pregnant. We leaned on each other during this time and put a lot of pressure on ourselves to fill that hole with the baby we both so badly wanted.
After trying the traditional route of baby-making for a year with no success, we sought help. Every doctor and specialist we worked with gave us the same answer: They could not understand why we were not getting pregnant. After another year of trying different medical techniques without any luck, we were at a loss for answers.
“STOKE STARTED OUT AS A PASSION PROJECT, BUT HAS TURNED INTO A FAMILY BUSINESS. WE ARE REALLY PROUD TO SELL A CLEANINGREDIENT SNACK THAT WE TRULY BELIEVE IN AND HAPPILY FEED TO OUR OWN KIDS.”
With this advice, we sought out the best clean and healthy protein, which led us to grass-fed and finished beef. In addition to the traditional cuts of meat, we also both incorporated beef snack sticks into our diets. These convenient snacks gave us the clean protein we were searching for throughout the day. Four months later, we finally received the news we had prayed for: We were pregnant with our first child!
A BUSINESS (AND A BABY!) IS BORN
Out of that personal journey, Stoke Provisions was born: a brand built on the balance of my love for the outdoors and Merissa’s commitment to clean, intentional eating. Together, we set out to create a clean, kind, and healthy snack we’d feel good about giving our own children.
Every Stoke Provisions beef stick—available in original and hatch green chile flavors—is ethically sourced and sustainably produced with animals that are certified treated humanely.
Today, we are blessed with four amazing kids, and it’s a great feeling to offer them a snack in which we know every ingredient.
"FUEL THE SPARK"
The internal combustion engine starts with a spark, which can create an infinite amount of positive momentum and energy.
Merissa has shown me how important and thankless her job as a stay-at-home mom can be.
Entertaining four kids is a daily challenge. The thing is, she knows she is doing something more valuable for our family than words can express. Merissa is constantly lighting sparks in our children, every day. Those moments, no matter how small, deserve to be celebrated.
We say "Fuel the Spark" because it is not just about experiencing your own adventures and successes but also about the magic feeling you get when you see the spark in another's eyes.
We started with fueling our own sparks, then the spark in each other, then the spark in our kids. Through our products, we hope to fuel the spark in you and your communities. Where YOU take it is the greatest adventure. We can't wait to see!

TEXASGADGET COMPANY
BUILDING A LEGACY, ONE ADVENTURE AT A TIME
ARTICLE BY MICAH WEINER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARRIN LEWIS
“We want to be the concierge and product expert.”
A stone-accented log cabin on the edge of Dripping Springs stands out from the highway. Inside is a store that stands out from anything you’ve ever seen. You won’t find fluorescent lights or crowded aisles. Instead, there’s leather that smells like campfire memories, gear that lasts for generations, and a welcome as warm as an old friend’s handshake.
This is Texas Gadget Company, a family-owned outdoor and lifestyle store built on legacy, intention, and a love for the wild places.
At the center of it all is Michael Lavengco. A lifelong outdoorsman, Michael has hunted and fished his entire life. He and his wife, Cheryl, have raised their three kids— McKenzie, Michael II, and John Matt—with that same love of the land. “All my kids have grown up hunting and fishing since they could walk,” he says. “It’s a way of life.”
The Lavengcos moved to Dripping Springs in 2013, and their boys went to Dripping Springs High School. Today, all of their children, now adults, live in Central Texas. “This is where our roots are,” he says.
Michael is now retired from a 40-year career in corporate America, but retirement certainly hasn’t slowed him down: “Retirement for me is running three new companies,” he says with a laugh. “I knew I was going to retire from the corporate world. This is what I want to do.”
That vision became Texas Gadget Company, a space where passion meets purpose. “This business is about legacy,” Michael says. “It’s an opportunity for my wife and me to create something for our family. We’re excited to give something to the next generation. They can enjoy it as long as they can.”
“Having the right gear makes every excursion as enjoyable as it can be.”
The family legacy continues with son John Matt, who works side by side with his parents at the shop. With McKenzie and Michael II also helping to support Texas Gadget Company, the Lavengco family envisions the business and its products lasting for generations. Luke Shelton, a key employee, has also become an integral part of the Texas Gadget Company family alongside the Lavengcos.
All the gear at Texas Gadget Company is heirloom-quality, built to perform and endure. Brands like Filson, Danner, Orvis, and Fishpond fill the shelves. There’s Benchmade for premium knives, Garmin for next-level navigation, SITKA Gear for serious hunters, and Free Fly, Burlebo, and Howler Brothers for technical outdoor apparel that’s as stylish as it is functional. Add in Mystery Ranch packs, LaCrosse boots, XTRATUF footwear, Tupelo outdoor furniture, and an extensive selection of YETI products, from tumblers to roadready ice chests. The result is a curated selection of the best outdoor gear found anywhere in the country.
“We were either going to do it the right way or not do anything at all,” Michael says. “You get what you pay for, and quality and dependability are not inexpensive.”
That level of quality goes hand-in-hand with expert, personal service. “We want to be the concierge and product expert,” he explains. “Customers come in and say, ‘I’m
headed to Montana or Wyoming or somewhere in Texas to fly fish or hunt.’ We help them find exactly what they need—gear that performs no matter the conditions.”
But this isn’t just a store. Housed in a rustic cabin, it’s a space that invites you to stay awhile. Michael cold-called the building’s previous owner and used his background in mergers and acquisitions to seal the deal. “Most places worth buying aren’t for sale,” he says. “But I loved the whole look, feel, and vibe of the place. It was a welcoming feeling. We want people to feel at home here.”
Whether online or in-store, every part of the business is built with care. All the inventory in the store is also available online. Once you walk into the shop, you’ll quickly see why Texas Gadget Company is a must-visit for serious outdoorspeople.
“We’re not competing with Bass Pro or Academy,” Michael says. Rather, “I want you to feel like you’re walking in my front door.”
His voice softens. “Every trip is important. You might only get two or three trips a year, and if your gear isn’t up to the task…” he trails off. “Having the right gear makes every excursion as enjoyable as it can be.”
In a world of big box stores and faceless e-commerce, Texas Gadget Company stands as a different kind of outpost: personal, principled, and proud to build something that will last.
CONTINUED >
Because at its core, Texas Gadget Company isn’t just about selling things. It’s about relationships, family, and building something that lasts.
The right gear and the right community can turn a good outing into a lifelong memory. That’s the kind of legacy Michael and his family are building, one customer and one adventure at a time.
TexasGadgetCompany.com @texasgadgetco
Texas Gadget Company
Community is as central to the brand as gear. Michael and family envision the store as a gathering place—a true destination. They plan to host happy hours, football watch parties, and educational events like hunter safety courses and fly fishing clinics for kids. “We want to be part of this community, to give back,” Michael says. “We want to host events that bring people together.”
Looking back on the many small choices leading to this moment, we realize that oftentimes it’s simply the decision to explore... to take that first step that is the hardest, but the most crucial. Most of us want to get to a place we have yet to be. With the dawn of Summer, mixed with a bit of boldness, we just may forge new territory and find ourselves wondering why we didn’t do it sooner.
If a new home is in your story, we are honored to come alongside in your next adventure.
Strong Roots is a local, family-owned business deeply rooted in our community. Let’s start a conversation.

THE WONDER YEARS
Have you ever spent time with a baby and felt a surprisingly deep connection, without a single word spoken? Babies can’t explain to you how they feel or have a conversation about their thoughts, yet they often connect through something more powerful: curiosity.
In my office, it usually begins with a baby quietly watching me from a distance. Then comes eye contact, a cautious smile, and soon they’re reaching for my stethoscope—touching, tasting, passing it back and forth. After a few rounds of peek-a-boo and waving bye-bye, we are fast friends. Long before they can speak or move freely, babies are wired to discover their world, and that includes discovering people. They’re exploring. One of the joys of being a pediatrician is witnessing this incredible growth over the course of my time with patients and their families. In a child’s first two years, development is fast and full of wonder. Newborns sleep through our first visits, but at just two months old, they start to coo and smile. By four months, they’re rolling over. At six months, they’re already trying solid foods. By nine months, they are crawling, babbling, and grabbing everything in my office. And by two years, they’re opinionated, energetic, and uniquely themselves. The rapid explosion of new milestones and changes during this short period of time is miraculous.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Then—blink—they’re navigating friendships, emotions, and identity throughout adolescence. But no matter the stage, one truth holds: Children learn through exploration. They don’t sit quietly in lectures or listen to podcasts; they play, climb, taste, listen, and ask questions. As parents, grandparents, and mentors, it is our job to cultivate this natural desire in a way that is meaningful and safe.
HOW CAN WE SUPPORT CHILDREN IN THEIR EXPLORATION?
Be a Co-Explorer
Let them see you trying new things. Explore nature together. Try unfamiliar foods. Be vulnerable and ask curious questions. Show them that learning and discovery are lifelong adventures not just for the young.
Be Present
Put away the distractions and technology. Tune in and listen. That constant stream of chatter from your preschooler is not just noise; it’s learning in real time. Watching their minds light up as they play and discover the world around them is truly a gift.
Be Patient
Exploration is messy. Paint will splatter; knees will be scraped; hands (and kitchens) will get dirty. And that’s okay. These moments are signs of healthy, hands-on learning. This season is short—embrace the beautiful chaos while it lasts.

Coolin’ It in a Cave
Exploring Local Caverns to Beat the Summer Heat
ARTICLE BY CAROLANN MAGNANI
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUMMER MILES
When triple-digit temps hit the Hill Country, you can escape to the coolest place—underground. Hidden beneath our scenic region lies a wonderland of caves and caverns with naturally maintained year-round temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Formed over millions of years, these subterranean treasures not only showcase awe-inspiring natural beauty, but they also provide a glimpse into the geological and cultural history of Central Texas.
Much of the Hill Country sits atop the Edwards Plateau, a geologic formation composed largely of porous limestone. Over time, rainwater seeps through the cracks in the rock, dissolving the limestone and forming vast cave systems. This process has created a dense network of underground formations, including both commercially developed show caves and wild, unexplored underground networks. There are an estimated 3,000 known cave systems in the state with potentially thousands more on private property.
ROCKING THE CAVE TRAIL
Five of these caves, mostly an hour’s drive from Dripping Springs, have teamed up to offer visitors a unique journey: the Texas Cave Trail. Pick up a passport at the first cave you visit and have it stamped at subsequent caves. The itinerary includes Natural Bridge Caverns, Longhorn Cavern, Cave Without a Name, Inner Space Cavern, and the Caverns of Sonora. Complete your journey within a year, and you’ll receive a Texas Cave Trail T-shirt.
TEXAS’ LARGEST AND MOST POPULAR
Visited by more than 400,000 people annually, Natural Bridge Caverns is one of Texas’ seven show caves and the largest by volume. Located just north of San Antonio, it was discovered in 1960 by four students from St. Mary’s University who convinced the landowner to let them explore what they thought might be a cave system.
It turns out they were right. Natural Bridge Caverns, opened to the public in 1964, comprises more than two miles of chambers filled with breathtaking stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones.

STEEPED IN HISTORY AND FOLKLORE
A uniquely different experience can be had exploring Longhorn Cavern, where the temperature stays a cool 68 degrees, located in Longhorn Cavern State Park near Burnet. Unlike Natural Bridge Caverns, it was formed by an ancient river rather than a slow-drip mineral buildup, which is evident in the cavern’s smooth, sculpted walls.
Developed by the Civilian Conversation Corps in 1934, the cave has been used in many ways over the centuries, from a Native American animal “trap cave,” to a hideout for outlaws, and even as a nightclub. On the 90-minute walking tour, you’ll hear stories of the cave’s rich history and see where mastodon bones were discovered. You might even spot the tiny, endangered tricolored bat, which makes its home in the cavern.
TOO BEAUTIFUL FOR WORDS
The Cave Without a Name, in Boerne, earned its moniker from a contest held in the 1930s, when a young boy deemed it too beautiful to have a name. Keep your eyes peeled for bats as you descend into this stunning show cave filled with spectacular stalactites, delicate soda straws, and cave drapery. The cave maintains a comfortable 66 degrees year-round and offers daily, one-hour tours through its six rooms. If you’re looking for a unique experience, get tickets to a concert performed in the acoustically rich Queen’s Throne Room.
GIANT GROUND SLOTHS AND EXTINCT CAMELS
Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown might not have been discovered if Interstate 35 hadn’t been built. In 1963, a Texas Highway Department team found more than they expected when they drilled into the cavern. Since then, paleontologists have unearthed bones from Ice Age animals, including sabertooth cats, giant ground sloths, and extinct camels. The cave offers tours of varying difficulty, from a classic walk-through to a four-hour Wild Cave Tour, which involves hiking, crawling, and squeezing through tight spots to spy spectacular formations.
DISCOVERED BY A DOG
Around the turn of the 20th century, on a ranch in Sonora, legend has it a dog chased a raccoon into a 20-inch opening in the rock, a discovery that would later be known as the Caverns of Sonora. The farthest cavern on the Texas Cave Trail, at about the halfway point to Big Bend, is worth the trek. The cavern is home to a dazzling array of helictites—twisted formations that seem to defy gravity—making it popular with cave enthusiasts and photographers.

Hawaii is a wonderful option for both beach and mountain lovers, and summer break provides an excellent opportunity to explore this paradise.
The Hawaiian islands form an archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean. There are eight major islands, five of which tend to attract tourists. Hawaii is a true wonderland featuring stunning beaches, breathtaking cliffs, active volcanoes, delicious cuisine, relaxing sounds of the ukulele, and the warm aloha spirit.
Hawaii is known for its unique microclimates and access to numerous outdoor activities including hiking, horseback riding, ziplining, water sports, whale watching, and sunset cruises. With so much natural beauty, it is a place where you can truly find your heart at peace.
Each of the major islands offers something unique, attracting loyal visitors who return time and again.
BIG ISLAND
Also known simply as Hawaii, this island features an active volcano and stunning lava rock beaches. Highlights include stargazing, hiking, and Akaka Falls State Park. With more miles of coastline than the other islands, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving are absolute musts. Treat yourself to an authentic Hawaiian shaved iced or Kona coffee.
MAUI
The most manicured of the islands, Maui attracts families and travelers seeking variety. Maui offers resorts for all budgets, exceptional restaurants, luxury shopping, and stunning beaches. Surf or snorkel on Ka’anapali Beach and take in a sunset from atop Haleakala volcano. Maui also boasts numerous golf courses, including a famed PGA course. If you enjoy road trips, take the Road to Hana and stop for freshbaked banana bread.
LANAI
A mostly private island owned by Oracle’s Larry Ellison, Lanai is also known as “the pineapple island” due to its history as the world’s largest pineapple plantation. Lanai is home to two Four Seasons properties that offer exceptional luxury experiences and are a perfect honeymoon destination. Golf carts are the preferred method of transportation here. Visit the Garden of the Gods and watch the sun set over neighboring islands.
OAHU
The busiest of the islands and home to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, Oahu appeals to those who want a mix of city (Honolulu) life and beach relaxation. Known for exceptional surfing and the Diamond Head crater, there is much to explore on Oahu. Spend the morning snorkeling in Hanauma Bay and enjoy a traditional Hawaiian luau on famed Waikiki Beach.
KAUAI
Known for its raw beauty, dramatic cliffs, and waterfalls, Kauai is perfect for those who love to explore more rugged areas. The island features gorgeous sandy beaches, including Poipu Beach, where the sea turtles nest in season and snorkeling is popular. Take a helicopter tour over the Na Pali coast for a sky-high view of its cliffs. Texans can fly direct from Houston or Dallas to Oahu or enjoy a single-day West Coast layover to help adjust to the time difference (five hours) and minimize jet lag.

PIG PEN BBQ
ARTICLE BY MICAH WIENER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARRIN LEWIS
Pig Pen BBQ, the beloved Hill Country smokehouse founded by William “Bill” Warren and Michelle Matthews, is expanding westward with a brand-new destination in Johnson City. The 3,000-square-foot space has transformed into a full-service barbecue and community gathering spot with a barnyard cantina, shaded patio, live music stage, ample TV screens, and event-ready grounds.
“I like the small-town community aspect,” Warren says. “It’s why we chose Dripping Springs back then, and Johnson City now instead of Austin.”
The new space will include upgraded kitchen facilities, expanded dining, and rustic design touches that echo Pig Pen’s roots. Beyond brisket and ribs, plans include twice-monthly Sunday barbacoa—featuring goat, lamb, and whole hogs cooked in custom pits—plus weekly live music.
The new location has also filled a need. When a local farmers and artisan market lost its weekly meeting spot, Warren and Matthews jumped at the chance to host every Saturday morning.
From Dripping Springs to Johnson City: Local BBQ Favorite Expands its Reach Out West
“This is about legacy and giving back,” Warren says. “We’ve already connected with schools and first responders. Just like in Dripping Springs, we’re here to build the community, not just serve it.”
Pig Pen Johnson City promises to be more than a meal; it’s a Hill Country hangout where barbecue meets backyard vibes. The new growth opportunity comes with excitement and responsibility for Warren and Matthews.
“It’s a big challenge. We’re responsible for 25 families. That’s a lot of pressure. We want to do a good job for our employees because they are good for us. We know the BBQ will speak for itself,” says Warren. “We’re creating a place where people want to come together.”

Dripping Springs: Where It All Started
The original Pig Pen BBQ location at 301 West Highway 290 in Dripping Springs continues to thrive as a cornerstone of community and comfort food. The award-winning restaurant is known for its slow-smoked meats, friendly counter service, and commitment to serving more than just great food.
Exciting outdoor upgrades and a full-service bar are coming this fall, bringing even more life to the well-loved spot. Locals still stop by for the signature brisket, but it’s Pig Pen’s deep roots in giving back—serving meals to teachers, first responders, and schools—that have made it a true hometown favorite.
PATIO PICKS AND POURS

Shanny’s Shoutouts: Spots Worth the Heat
When the Texas sun is high and the breeze is just right, there’s nothing better than relaxing on a shaded patio with a tasty bite and something cold to sip. Whether you’re escaping the summer heat or simply soaking up the season, the Hill Country offers plenty of spots where the drinks are chilled to perfection, the dishes are mouthwatering, and the views are worth lingering over. Here are three local patios serving up perfect pairings—signature sips and a standout entrée or two at each—to help you make the most of your next al fresco adventure!
HILL COUNTRY ICE HOUSE
Local friends and former Rusty Mule owners Robert Blankenship and Andy Stedman have done it again with Hill Country Ice House, a brand-new rustic retreat “where Texas gathers.” Set on five oak-covered acres in Dripping Springs, this laid-back spot offers live music, cornhole, and a perfect setting for sipping Texas craft beer (16 taps!) or cooling off with a homemade cocktail.
The energy behind the bar is infectious, thanks to the friendly, upbeat staff, especially bartender Enzo, who clearly knows his craft. He stirred up two standouts for us: the Rusty Mule, a smoky, earthy twist on the classic made with local Desert Door sotol and smoked agave, and the Bluebonnet Bramble, a refreshing blend of Waterloo gin and blackberry liqueur that felt like summer in a glass. Both cocktails were expertly balanced, beautifully presented, and served with a smile.
At the heart of Hill Country Icehouse is Tru Bar-B-Que, led by Dripping Springs native James Diaz and serving a rotating menu of smoked tri-tip, turkey legs, spare ribs, brisket flautas, smash burgers, wings, and tacos—all made from fresh, never-frozen ingredients, including house-made tortillas. With weekly specials and game-day plates in the works, Hill Country Ice House is already shaping up to be a favorite for food, drinks, and good Hill Country vibes.
HAYS CITY STORE
What started as a gas station in the early 1980s has grown into one of the Hill Country’s most beloved local gems. Hays City Store is always on my list when visitors want a true Texas experience with character, history, and flair.
This spot has it all: five televisions, a wood-fired pizza oven, comfort food, over 40 beers on tap, and expertly crafted cocktails. The
chicken tinga nachos are unforgettable, and the frozen margarita flight—featuring jalapeño cucumber, watermelon, strawberry, and a seasonal flavor like fresh mango—is the perfect pairing.
Manager Beau let me in on a few extras: daily drink specials, happy hour (Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.), and live music every night except Monday. Add a little steel guitar in the background and it’s hard not to fall in love with this place.
DOS OLIVOS MARKET
Tucked into an unassuming shopping center across from Belterra, Dos Olivos Market is a hidden gem where Old World tradition meets Texas hospitality—best enjoyed on its scenic Hill Country patio.
The new menu is full of bold, vibrant flavors. I started with the whipped feta and grilled naan, which was creamy, bright, and the perfect warm-up. The tuna crudo tostada was next: three tostadas piled high with yellowfin, mango, avocado, and microgreens, brought to life by their imported salsa matcha, “La Comandante,” a rich, spicy blend of toasted chiles, garlic, peanuts, and sesame— pure bliss. (The best part is you can take the flavor home, as they sell this little jar of Mexican magic right in the market.)
I paired it all with a glass of Riley’s Lookout sauvignon blanc— crisp, citrusy, and perfectly refreshing. Swing by for happy hour Monday through Thursday, when all wine, beer, and wine-a-rita flights are discounted. With bold Texas flavors and standout Spanish imports, Dos Olivos is a place to sip, savor, and slow down.
GOOD FOOD, GREAT DRINKS, AND EVEN BETTER VIEWS
What more could you ask for? The next time the sun’s shining and your taste buds are calling, head out to one of these patios. Just don’t forget your shades … and maybe a second round. And if you ever need a partner in “research,” just reach out. I reckon I’ll be “plenty parched” (as my dad used to say) and more than happy to sip, snack, and share a few strong opinions.
Here’s to cold drinks, warm patios, and soaking up every last sip of summer. Cheers, y’all!
Hello, Drip readers! I’m Shannon (“Shanny”) Holzwarth, and I’m genuinely excited to share a few of my favorite “watering holes” in the Texas Hill Country—a term my dad affectionately used during our countless road trips in search of the perfect spot.
I grew up in Spring, Texas, and from an early age, I was drawn to the joy of discovering new places and trying new food. While most of my friends were busy with Atari or shopping for the latest Barbie accessories, my favorite pastime was playing “restaurant.” (A close second was teaching a “class” of stuffed animals on an old green chalkboard from a garage sale!) I loved creating seasonal menus with drinks, appetizers, entrées, and desserts—dreaming up dining experiences long before I could actually experience them.
Over the years, friends and family have often encouraged me to start a blog to share my recommendations and custom itineraries. So here we are—my very first official “Shanny Shout-Out.”
The Hill Country is packed with hidden gems, and I’m more than happy to do the “research” for you. Cheers to good eats, great company, and unforgettable finds!

A ROUNDUP OF SOME OF OUR FAVORITE LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHERS
ARTICLE BY WHITNIE STRAUSS
From the first steps of a toddler to the final steps across the graduation stage, life’s big moments deserve to be captured. Whether you’re updating a business headshot, snapping family portraits, capturing senior milestones, or saying “I do,” the right photographer can make all the difference. Here’s a roundup of some of our local favorites!
I always say I started photography because my husband got tired of me sending pictures of our first daughter all day, every day, to his phone. So he bought me my first camera, along with classes to Austin School of Photography, and here we are. I love that, through my lens, clients are able to see themselves how everyone else sees them. I love candids and all the crazy in between. I know everyone wants that perfect picture, but the reality is always my favorite. I’ll end with my favorite quote from Erma Bombeck: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’”

I’ve called Dripping Springs home for almost a decade now, and you’ll most likely find me chatting with friends and family at one of my favorite coffee shops in town: Nectarine, Lucky Lab, or (of course) Mazama. As I approach my 10-year business anniversary, I am overwhelmed by the ways that my Dripping Springs clients have been so good to me. Starting a business in this amazing town is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I love offering family photography at any stage, from maternity to high school seniors and everything in between. I also offer business lifestyle sessions for local entities and businesses.

Originally from Oregon, my love for nature and the outdoors runs deep. One of my favorite things about living in Dripping Springs is the access to incredible parks, trails, and natural springs, all within a short distance.
Each year, I explore new areas, always on the lookout for unique locations for the families and couples I photograph. I especially enjoy working with people who are up for an adventure—those longer hikes often lead to the most memorable shots.
Dripping Springs has some of the friendliest and most welcoming people I’ve met! It has been such a joy to not only photograph, but to really get to know so many people in the area, many of whom have become close friends. I feel so lucky to be a part of this vibrant, supportive community.

STACY berg
I’m Stacy Berg, a photographer based in Dripping Springs, Texas, and the heart behind Fotohogg Photography. I’ve lived here for 25 years and have watched our little town grow—its charm, its people, its stories. This place grounds me, even as my work takes me wherever the light leads.
With more than 20 years behind the camera, I’ve built a style that’s raw, soulful, and full of motion. My sessions move fast, lean into lovely chaos, and thrive in blink-andyou’ll-miss-it moments. I’ll probably make you laugh, might trip over something, and will absolutely catch the shot you didn’t know you needed.
What we create isn’t just a photo; it’s a piece of your story that you hang on your wall because it means something. It holds emotion, energy, presence—not perfection. I’m drawn to people in their element, doing what they love, in places that matter. That kind of honesty is where the magic lives, and that’s what I’m chasing every time I pick up my camera. No matter what I’m shooting, the goal is the same: to capture something real. Most of my clients leave feeling like old friends—and honestly, that’s the best part.

AT THE WESTERN END OF MERCER, WATER GENTLY DRIPS FROM LIMESTONE LEDGES INTO THE SPRINGS BELOW; THIS QUIET, NATURAL
DETAIL INSPIRED THE NAME
DRIPPING SPRINGS.
STEP INTO THE PAST, SHOP IN THE PRESENT
As you walk along Mercer Street, it’s easy to feel time slow down. The architecture surrounding today’s thriving businesses dates back to 1870 to 1940.
Take, for example, the historic Patterson Mercantile Store built in 1906. At times a grocery, post office, feed store, lumber yard, and even a theater, this versatile space now houses Vintage Soul, a thoughtfully curated boutique offering clothing, jewelry, gifts, and more.
Just across the street, Mazama Coffee Co. invites visitors to linger with an artisan pour in hand. Housed in the original A.L. Davis Mercantile store established in 1891, the cafe blends heritage with warmth in every detail. Just next door, Juniper Tree Market invites you to wander and browse its beautifully sourced houseplants, art supplies, books, and creative gifts in a fresh, modern shop.
The charm doesn’t stop there. Mercer Street is also home to beloved local spots like Hudson's on Mercer, The Barber Shop, The Palm Social Collection, Sicara, Grawlix, Revel Wilde, Starrs on Mercer, The Rural Home, Sacred Moon Herbs, The Great British Baking Company, and more, each adding its unique signature to this walkable, welcoming district.
BALANCING GROWTH WITH PRESERVATION
Dripping Springs is home to three historic districts— Mercer Street, Hays Street, and Old Fitzhugh—nestled near the crossroads of Highway 290 and Ranch Road 12. This charming downtown area serves as the cultural, historic, and tourism heart of the community. In a continued effort to preserve its character and legacy, the city has established a Historic Preservation Ordinance and a dedicated Historic Preservation Commission, whose goals include preserving property with historical, architectural, archeological, and cultural significance.
251 Old Fitzhugh: REHABBING A
1940s HISTORICAL PROPERTY
251 Old Fitzhugh was originally built in 1940. It was purchased in 2024 by Courtney Deavers, who has a dream to restore the property to its original charm. “This project will hopefully spark the first of many historically appropriate renovations to occur downtown, ensuring that we can continue to preserve history while growing sustainably,” says Deavers. “This downtown area has so much potential. I’m looking forward to seeing the transformation over the next few years. It’s an exciting time to live, work, and play in our beautiful city of Dripping Springs.”
The City of Dripping Springs released a draft of its updated Reimagine Dripping Springs, a comprehensive plan for the city that will represent the collective vision of the future of our community. The most recent version is designed to guide the city’s growth and development up to the year 2040, ensuring that Dripping Springs continues to evolve and remain a place where residents can work, live, and play.
When the people of Dripping Springs were asked to envision the town’s future, a few words consistently rose to the top: small-town charm, history, rural roots, family, friendly, quaint. As part of the city’s comprehensive planning process, residents voiced a clear desire to preserve the character of the Hill Country while embracing thoughtful, sustainable growth. The vision outlined in the Reimagine Dripping Springs city plan is one of balance: maintaining the warmth and authenticity of the historic downtown while evolving into a vibrant destination for dining, entertainment, festivals, and community connection.
WHAT IS ON THE HORIZON FOR DRIPPING SPRINGS?
Big plans are unfolding along historic Old Fitzhugh. With the project concept originating back in 2017, The Old Fitzhugh Road Improvement Project is finally taking shape. At the heart of the plan is a shift in pace: the two-lane road will be realigned to make room for an inviting, 8-foot-wide walking trail on the west side of the street. Designed for leisurely strolls and neighborhood connection, the path will be framed by curated landscaping, pedestrian-friendly features, and timeless touches like historic-style lampposts. This enhanced walkability is set to breathe new life into the area, encouraging revitalization and responsible growth of the Old Fitzhugh district.
It’s this harmony between progress and preservation that makes Dripping Springs so special—a place where history and innovation flow together seamlessly. The future is bright.

The Boot Whisperer
Explore the Perfect Pair and the Magic Behind the Best Fit
In the heart of Wimberley, tucked inside a charming old building that feels like it belongs in a Western film, lives a legend. Known far and wide as “The Boot Whisperer,” Ulli Johnston has spent the last 30 years crafting an experience that defies explanation. She doesn’t just sell boots. She matches them. Johnston’s talent is connecting one-of-a-kind vintage, custom, and handmade boots with the people who were meant to wear them.
Not everyone who steps into Johnston's Wild West Store leaves with their perfect pair. But if the boots are there, she will find them. It’s not a science. It’s not a trick. It’s something much deeper. It is an intuitive, practiced art form that Johnston has mastered like no one else.
Johnston’s path to the lonestar state started with a simple trip from her home in Germany and ended with her meeting her future husband at an auction—a fitting start to a Texas-sized love story. A month later, they were married and living in his Airstream parked at Blue Hole. Three decades later, they still happily call Wimberley home.
Johnston’s appreciation for fine leather started small at local antique fairs in Austin. One pair of classic brown boots led to another, and another, and then to a full-blown passion. She became a pro at spotting high-quality vintage and custom boots, especially those made between the 1940s and 1980s before the boom of mass-production. Her store today is like a living museum, but without the glass cases and “do not touch” signs. These boots are meant to be worn.
What makes Johnston’s process so mesmerizing is that she doesn’t ask for your size or style preference. She watches and listens. Then, she brings out pairs, and sometimes sizes, that you’d never pick for yourself and, somehow, they just fit. People call it magical. One customer even said, “Watching Ulli in action is better than watching TV.”
Johnston says, “The title 'Boot Whisperer' had to be given and had to be earned.” It was coined in 2006 by a customer who walked out of her store, stunned, wearing a pair of boots Johnston had selected without knowing her preferences or shoe size. Since then, the term has become much more than a name; it’s a reputation and an experience she’s created all on her own.
Johnston’s clientele spans the globe—international travelers, curious wanderers, the occasional celebrity like Jimmy Buffett (who, as it turns out, wore more than just flip flops). But the experience is the same for everyone: no red carpet, no VIP treatment—just boots, stories, and the careful attention of someone who genuinely wants to get it right. Many have asked Johnston to share her trade secrets, but even she can’t fully explain it.
There’s no website full of inventory, Instagram page, or online shop. Her store runs on unforgettable moments and word of mouth. And that’s just how Johnston likes it. If you ask her to name a favorite pair from her collection, it’s like asking a mother to choose a favorite child. Still, she lights up when she talks about a pair of Tony Lamas from the late 1940s with butterfly inlays: “They are off the charts,” she says, grinning. Her motto? “The warmer the weather, the shorter the boots.”
Although she’s received offers to move her shop to high-profile locations everywhere from San Antonio’s River Walk to New York’s Fifth Avenue, Johnston has stayed put. She prefers the small-town magic of Wimberley, the slower pace, and the quiet
“Once boot lovers find me, they don’t go anywhere else.”
hum of something real. When she transitioned to appointment-only hours, skeptics warned that her business would dry up. Instead, it only deepened the mystique. “Once boot lovers find me,” she says, “they don’t go anywhere else.”
For Johnston, it’s never been about sales; it’s about stories, connections, and the belief that the right pair of boots is out there waiting. Finding them might feel like luck, but in truth, it’s a journey with a little exploration and a little surrender. And when Johnston finds that one pair you didn’t even know you were looking for—that one-of-a-kind boot, full of character that’s just your size (or not)—you’ll understand why they call her The Boot Whisperer.
The Wild West Store is open by appointment only. Call in advance to schedule time with The Boot Whisperer: 512.293.4890

EXPLORE A NEW WORKOUT THAT WON'T WEAR YOU DOWN
WORTH
THE WEIGHT
Often, when we hear the word “cardio,” we think of soul-crushing HIIT sessions or heart-pounding sprints. And while there’s definitely a place for those in a well-rounded program, it is best to
involves carrying extra weight while walking or hiking, typically using a weighted vest or backpack. You get all the benefits of aerobic work, plus a few more:
THE GOAL IS TO STAY IN A ZONE WHERE YOUR BODY CAN USE OXYGEN TO FUEL MOVEMENT.
spend the majority of our cardio workouts in the “aerobic zone”: easy, steady movement that builds your base without burning you out.
Spending time in the aerobic zone offers a wide range of benefits that support overall health and long-term performance:
• Better recovery between harder workouts
• Improved heart health and blood pressure
• Increased energy and work capacity
• Lower stress
Aerobic training shouldn’t feel like punishment. The goal is to stay in a zone where your body can use oxygen to fuel movement. If you can breathe through your nose and carry on a conversation, you’re likely right where you need to be.
One of my favorite ways to train in that zone is weighted walking. Weighted walking, also known as rucking,
• Added resistance to build muscular endurance
• Higher calorie burn without joint stress
• Improved posture and strength from time under load
For weighted walking, I prefer to use a weighted vest instead of a ruck. The reason is simple: balance. A vest distributes weight evenly across your front and back, allowing you to move naturally and stay out longer with less wear and tear.
And the best part? You’re outside, soaking up sunlight, breathing fresh air, exploring your surroundings, and quieting your mind.
Modern life keeps us indoors, overstimulated, and under-recovered. A weighted walk in the Hill Country is my favorite antidote.

A TASTE FOR DISCOVERY
CHEF MARISSA FISK’S VIBRANT DISHES MIX MODERN FLAVORS WITH THE ESSENCE OF TRADITION
For personal chef and caterer Marissa Fisk, food is an experience, an art, and a fusion of past and present. Exploring food through memory, tradition, and innovation, Fisk invites others to get out of their comfort zone and embrace unexpected flavors.
Growing up, Fisk was enchanted by her Argentinian grandmother’s way of cooking from scratch. She savored the ritual, from the slow, intentional preparation to the joining of family to share a long, unhurried meal and hours of conversation.
“What I loved about the culture was the gathering of people and the slow food movement,” she says. “It was important to my grandparents to be conversationalists and mentors.”
Now, Fisk brings this same sensibility to Dripping Springs, inviting clients to explore and experience food in fresh, meaningful ways. “Food can be such a delight for people,” she shares. “It can be such an expression of joy.”
Rooted in the traditions of her upbringing, Fisk cooks with a nostalgic touch and a colorful, Argentinian flair. Her rich collection of vintage cookbooks and treasured family recipes inspire many of her wholesome, homecooked dishes. “It’s food that speaks to the soul,” she says. “It’s aromatic, delicious, and comforting.”
But she’s not stuck in the past. Her style constantly evolves as she blends tradition with creativity. Social media and trending food cultures spark her imagination and motivate her to adapt. She appreciates the younger generation’s influence, with its focus on health-conscious choices and time-saving techniques. “I’m constantly reading and educating myself,” she says. “I want to hear what the newer voices are saying.”
The Austin restaurant culture also contributes to Fisk’s repertoire. “Our food scene is moving really fast,” she notes. “The history here is interesting and there are good finds right in our backyard.”
Complementing the big-city trends, the Hill Country supplies Fisk with an abundance of fresh, seasonal ingredients. She works closely with regenerative farms and sustainable producers in the area, grounding her cooking in place and purpose. “Texas really teaches people to be self-sufficient—growing and harvesting reconnects us to the land,” she notes.
For Fisk, sourcing locally is essential, and she takes advantage of the clean, nutrient-rich ingredients available nearby. “They make me better,” she says of the growers and producers with which she partners. “There’s nothing like a candied beet grown here in Wimberley, or a French radish, a bright yellow beet, or a beautiful microgreen. That’s just going to elevate my food; it elevates the art and it helps the palate.”
While many clients come to her for comfort food or special-occasion catering, Fisk sees every dish as an opportunity to broaden someone’s tastes. “I’m a little fierce in that department,” she laughs. “If I know the boundary, I push it.”
Fisk encourages her clients to try something new, like lamb, scallops, or blue cheese: “Being willing to walk off the beaten path, you’ll come upon really cool culinary experiences,” she says. “It’s an adventure.”
And for Fisk, adventure is half the fun. “With flavors, I just go all-out,” she says. With this bold approach, along with a deep respect for heritage and relentless curiosity, Fisk reminds us that life can be delicious, and food is an ever-evolving experience that invites us to create, connect, and explore.

Exploring Hog Heaven
When people think about exploring, they often imagine winding roads, remote trails, and distant horizons. But for members of Hog Heaven Sporting Club, adventure awaits just minutes from downtown Austin. Nestled just outside Dripping Springs in the heart of the Hill Country, Hog Heaven transforms outdoor pursuits from occasional getaways into everyday experiences.
At Hog Heaven, “getting out there” doesn’t mean a far-flung lease or a seasonal cabin. It means sneaking in pistol practice before heading to the office, teaching your daughter to cast a line after school, or breaking clays with friends on a Saturday morning. This is exploration that fits into your life—not the other way around.
Hog Heaven strikes that rare balance between accessibility and excellence. It’s a place to learn new skills, master your craft, or simply relax in nature. Occupying over 150 pristine acres, its meticulously designed facilities include nine pistol bays with a wide variety of targets, a 12-station sporting clays course that challenges shooters of all levels, and an archery range where beginners and experts alike find their mark. Anglers discover their own paradise at our 15-acre stocked lake with over 200 submerged structures that provide a rich fish habitat and endless opportunity.
Hog Heaven is also a community where members connect beyond the range. They gather for monthly dinners on our scenic party bridge, elevate their fitness and shooting skills through our Pistol PT program, and refine their technique with private shooting lessons from our team of experienced instructors.

way around.
Members also have access to training events and competitions where achievements are celebrated, knowledge is exchanged, and meaningful relationships are built. With its carefully limited membership model, Hog Heaven preserves the natural beauty of its grounds as well as the genuine culture that makes it a special place where craft, camaraderie, and conservation come together.
For those who are passionate about the outdoors, Hog Heaven offers something essential: belonging. Watch your children grow confident at summer camp, turn colleagues into friends on league night, or master critical skills at one
of our tactical workshops. And, of course, if you feel like you need to just kick back and unwind, there is no better place than around a fire pit on the shore of our lake—just be sure to keep an eye out for one of our resident bald eagles.
What does it mean to explore? At Hog Heaven, it means realizing that adventure doesn’t require a long weekend—just the right place and the right people. Here, you can pursue your interests and join a community dedicated to the outdoors right in your backyard, where exploration is no longer a journey. It’s a lifestyle.

CRAB CAKE
Seaside Flavor with a Hill Country Twist
ARTICLE BY BECKY ATKINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN HAFNER
Lightly crisped and oven-baked, these crab cakes bring the taste of the coast to your table—perfect for summer days when you’re chasing sunshine and new experiences.
Ingredients:
• 1/4 cup Duke’s mayonnaise
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
• 2 teaspoons dijon mustard
• 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
• 1½ teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
• 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, plus more for serving
• 1/8 teaspoon flake salt
• 1 pound lump crab meat
• 1/2 cup crushed saltine cracker crumbs (approximately 17 crackers)
• 4 tablespoons melted butter (optional)
• 8 lemon wedges for garnish
Directions :
1. Whisk mayonnaise, chopped parsley, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, Old Bay, lemon juice, and salt together in a large bowl.
2. Add crab meat to the mixture, followed by the crushed saltine crackers. Very carefully incorporate all of the ingredients. Be as gentle as possible to avoid breaking up those great lumps of crab meat.
3. Cover tightly and refrigerate for 30 minutes to one day.
4. Preheat your oven to 450°F. Generously grease a rimmed baking sheet with nonstick spray, or line with a silicone baking mat.
5. When ready to portion, use your hands to divide the crab cake mixture into six to eight mounds on a lined baking sheet. Compact each individual mound so they are uniform and not falling apart, but do not press down or flatten.
6. Brush the top of each cake with melted butter. (This is optional but highly recommended!)
7. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until lightly browned around the edges and on top. Squeeze a lemon wedge over each cake and serve warm.
8. Once cooled, cover any leftover crab cakes and refrigerate for up to four days, or freeze for up to three months.
