Giving, Growing, and Gratitude

The Holidays and Giving issue. When my husband, Will Rivera, asked if I wanted to write this month’s lifestyle letter, I was a little surprised. Our incredible editor, Kristen Hafner, typically writes these letters, offering a glimpse of what you are about to see in the issue.

One of the things she does best is taking that month’s theme and making it relatable and visibly stunning all at once. She writes these messages every month, with the exception of June—the Men’s Issue— which Will writes. He is a man’s man after all, truly understanding the importance of iron sharpening iron and keeping men of integrity in his circle.

This issue wraps up the year and highlights some of the most important work we do here at Dripping Springs City Lifestyle: working with our nonprofit partners to our best ability. We aim to give them as much visibility as possible so that this community can do what it does best—giving. I truly believe that this is the reason God led us down this path of bringing this very intentional and special publication to Dripping Springs.

I would like to take a moment to thank both Will and Kristen for pouring out their passion and talents month after month to our team and our community, shaping this publication into what it has become over the last two years. I am overcome with emotion each time I sit and reflect on how we have witnessed this magazine’s evolution into something we knew it could be. It's been inspiring to watch the vision unfold.

Will and I have also been pleasantly surprised and moved by how much this experience has given to us—lifelong friendships, unbreakable bonds, and the ability to make an impact. So … thank YOU for giving, Dripping Springs.

Your Dripping Springs Luxury Expert

We highly recommend Kim Burke. We went with her after being with another agent for 9 months with no offers. She expertly guided us through the process to stage and list our home. We received a full price offer in a very difficult market after being listed for only a few months with her. She skillfully advised us through a challenging contract negotiation and closing as well. We would highly recommend Kim to anyone looking to buy or sell a home!

A HEART FOR EMPOWERING CENTRAL AMERICA

In Dripping Springs, a quiet but transformative effort is underway. Alongside his wife and family, Dripping native David Sahl and his team of friends founded the nonprofit organization 18ten (referencing Matthew 18:10) in 2014, which works tirelessly to bring sustainable change to communities in Nicaragua, Guatemala, and beyond. What began as a simple trip with a burden to help children in Central America has evolved into a mission to help communities thrive through a hand up, not just a handout. “We’re just regular people who saw a need and decided to do something about it,” Sahl says.

WHEN HELPING HURTS

Sahl’s first visit to Central America wasn’t part of a grand plan. Driven by his love for Jesus, the trip started with a desire to explore and connect with people. He was struck by the warmth and generosity of the locals, particularly one woman living in poverty. “Living on a dirt floor with a tin roof slapped together, she gave us fruit—literally from nothing she still wanted to give,” Sahl recalls. He realized while people in poverty have great needs, they also possess a rich culture and resilience.

“When we first started, we learned that not all help is truly helpful,” Sahl explains. Along with what he and his team members witnessed on the ground, the book When Helping Hurts transformed their perspective. “Sometimes well-meaning efforts, like short-term mission trips, can unintentionally harm communities.” 18ten adopted a thoughtful approach, investing in long-term partnerships and ensuring local pastors, churches, and leaders in Central America are in the driver’s seat, deciding what their communities need most.

18ten created a successful model of after-school programs, trade schools, and tutoring programs. Children weren’t focusing at school because they hadn’t eaten; by providing a full, nutritious meal each day, families began growing educationally, physically, and spiritually by leaps and bounds.

In 2019, 18ten funded and launched Oasis de la Gracia Christian Academy in Nicaragua. Scaling its efforts on seven acres, this school provides high-quality education for the children of low-income Nicaraguan families and equips Nicaraguans to impact their country for Christ. These projects equip children and teens with skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Locals are employed to be the staff, teachers, and director of the school.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

As 18ten grows, so does the need for financial support. “We’re primarily a fundraising organization,” Sahl explains. “Our main goal is to raise money to support the incredible work that churches and community leaders are doing.”

One of its biggest fundraising efforts is an annual run held in Wimberley. This year’s event is set for December 7, with First Baptist Church sponsoring the run along the scenic Wimberley trails. “It’s a great way for the community to support us while having fun and staying active,” says Sahl. The event has become a cornerstone of 18ten’s fundraising efforts, bringing Central Texans together for a good cause.

Beyond raising funds, 18ten educates supporters about the importance of thoughtful giving. “It’s easy to throw money at a problem,” Sahl says, “but it’s harder to invest in a way that creates real change. We want our donors to know exactly where their money is going and how it’s making a difference.”

The organization’s mission is simple: to empower communities to build better futures for themselves. “It’s not just about charity,” Sahl says. “It’s about giving people the tools and support they need to thrive on their own. What keeps us going is the people we’ve met along the way. When you see the struggles they face and realize we have the resources to help, you can’t turn away.”

“We need people—whether through donations, participation in events, or simply spreading the word,” he says. “Every little bit helps.”

TAKE ACTION:

• Visit 18ten.org to meet the team, donate, and provide scholarships for families in need in Central America.

• Follow @18tenorg on Instagram and Facebook.

• Go to 18ten.org to register for Run for the Kids (10k, 5k, and 1k run options available) at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 7 at First Baptist Church Wimberley.

“IT’S ABOUT GIVING PEOPLE THE TOOLS AND SUPPORT THEY NEED TO THRIVE ON THEIR OWN.”

FIT FOR THE HOLIDAYS

How to Stay Active While Giving Back

The holiday season is a whirlwind of celebrations, family gatherings, and delicious food. But amid the festivities, it’s easy to lose sight of our fitness goals. This December, we want to remind you that it’s possible to stay active while enjoying everything the holidays have to offer—and even better, you can combine fitness with giving back to your community.

Here’s how to maintain your fitness routine during the holidays and make a positive impact on those around you.

1. MAKE MOVEMENT A TRADITION

The holidays are filled with traditions—why not make movement one of them? Instead of focusing solely on the food or lounging around after big meals, consider activities that keep you moving. Organize a family walk after dinner, play a friendly game of flag football, or even take part in a holiday fun run. Many communities host turkey trots or jingle bell runs in which the proceeds go to local charities. You get your workout in while supporting a great cause.

2. GIVE THE GIFT OF TIME AND FITNESS

This season, why not combine your fitness routine with acts of kindness? Volunteering is a great way to stay active while giving back. Consider signing up to help at a local food bank, walking dogs at an animal shelter, or participating in a charity walk or event. Activities like these keep you on your feet, burn calories, and allow you to make a difference in your community.

3. PRIORITIZE SHORT, HIGH-INTENSITY WORKOUTS

We know time can be tight with all the holiday events, shopping, and gatherings. If you're struggling to find time for your usual workout routine, focus on short, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions. These workouts can be as short as 15 to 20 minutes but still give you a great calorie burn. Better yet, HIIT workouts can be done anywhere, whether you're traveling to visit family or staying at home.

4. INCORPORATE FAMILY AND FRIENDS

One of the best ways to stay active during the holidays is to involve your family and friends. Encourage your loved ones to join you in a morning workout, a group yoga session, or an outdoor hike. Not only will this keep you all moving, but it will also create lasting memories. And, as we often remind our clients, leading by example can inspire others to make healthier choices too.

5. SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

The holidays are a busy time, and it’s okay if your workout routine looks a little different. The key is consistency, not perfection. Set realistic goals for the season. Instead of aiming for five gym sessions a week, focus on staying active in small ways, whether that’s a quick home workout, walking extra laps around the mall while shopping, or using a pedometer to track your steps.

6. MAKE IT ABOUT MORE THAN FITNESS

Remember, staying fit during the holidays is about more than just physical health. By staying active, you’re also boosting your mental and emotional well-being during what can be a stressful season. Combine that with giving back, and you’ll find that both your body and heart are stronger and healthier.

FINAL THOUGHTS: BALANCE IS KEY

The holidays should be a time of joy and celebration, not stress over missed workouts or overindulging. By finding ways to stay active that fit naturally into the season and involve giving back, you can create a balanced approach to health and happiness.

PRESERVING FAMILY LEGACIES

Hill Country Heirlooms Gives the Gift of Memories

Think back for a moment. What’s one memory that, if you could, you would relive just to feel it again? Maybe it’s the sound of your child’s laughter echoing through the house, your mother’s comforting smile, or your grandparents’ voices sharing stories filled with wisdom and love. Can you still picture the moment? Can you hear their voices clearly, or have the edges of those memories started to blur?

We all have moments we wish could last forever, but as time moves on, the details we thought we’d never forget begin to fade. It’s in these fleeting moments that we often find ourselves wishing we could freeze time, just to hold on a little longer.

What if you could relive your most cherished moments—not just in memory, but in full sight and sound—bringing back the laughter, the voices, and the emotions as if time had never passed?

Hill Country Heirlooms creates luxury videos that capture the essence of your family in a way that’s lasting and real. From the quiet, everyday moments to the milestones that define your story, Hill Country Heirlooms’ films preserve the beauty, love, and connections that matter most. By weaving together these moments and stories, it ensures your family's legacy is captured for generations to come. These films are more than keepsakes; they’re a way to preserve the people and memories you never want to forget.

Hill Country Heirlooms’ passion for storytelling comes from being artists, filmmakers, photographers, and visionaries—but above all, from being parents. The bond between parent and child creates an unspoken understanding of how quickly time slips away. It’s this awareness that drives the Hill Country Heirlooms team to help others hold on to the moments that matter most.

As the years pass, we experience moments filled with the deepest love and joy, but with that love comes the inevitable grief of losing those we hold dear. As time goes on, we realize that memories are often all that remain, but what if you didn’t have to rely on memory alone? What if you had a beautifully crafted film that brought those memories to life, allowing you to experience them all over again?

For me, it all began with my grandmother, the one we all turned to for guidance and strength. When she was 94, my husband suggested we sit her down for a filmed interview to capture her life’s story in her own words. I thought I knew everything about her, but that film revealed stories I had never heard before. Two years after she passed, our family gathered to watch the video, and the wave of emotion was indescribable.

In that instant, she was with us once more—laughing, sharing her memories and wisdom, looking directly at us as if she had never left. It was as though we could feel her presence, hear her beautiful voice, and hold on to her all over again. That’s when I truly understood the gift of capturing those we love—preserving their stories so they stay with us, even after they’re gone.

Every culture has its own way of honoring legacy. In Mexican tradition, we place our loved ones on an ofrenda (altar) during Día de los Muertos, surrounded by their favorite things, like my grandmother’s beloved pan dulce and Coke. In Jewish culture, it’s believed that no one is truly gone until their name is no longer spoken. Hill Country Heirlooms believes every family’s legacy is unique, and its role is to capture it, bringing it to life in a way that will last forever.

A Hill Country Heirlooms film allows you to relive your most meaningful moments in vivid detail, capturing not just the love and laughter, but the story that defines your family. Video is powerful because it’s alive. It preserves the movements, voices, expressions, and emotions that bring memories to life. Whether it’s a child’s first birthday, a milestone graduation, or simply a moment you never want to forget, these films become living, breathing memories you can pass down for generations. Through these films, future generations can connect with those who came before them to understand their stories, the love they shared, and the legacy that shaped their own journey.

As you think about the moments you wish could last forever, Hill Country Heirlooms can help you hold on to them and tell your story the way you want to be remembered, preserving your legacy for today and for the future.

Hill Country Heirlooms offers a range of packages, from milestone films to fully custom family documentaries. Each film is crafted with care to evoke emotion, spark memories, and capture the essence of your family’s unique story. Your family deserves to be remembered in a way that is as timeless as the love you share.

After all, your story is the greatest gift you could ever give.

Grows Where Hope

ROAM RANCH

A grasshopper symphony hums its song in the Texas Hill Country. On a green oasis, wild bison, turkeys, ducks, pigs, butterflies, and other creatures live in harmony.

“WHAT GOOD SHALL I DO THIS DAY?” is posted on the inside of a four-wheeler—a reminder to give back to the land and living things that give us so much.

This is Roam Ranch in Fredericksburg, Texas. Founded by Taylor and Katie Collins in 2017, Roam Ranch stands as a multi-species regeneration ranch where all are welcome and every creature is honored and recognized. Taylor and Katie connect people to the land through community events, guided hunts, and Force of Nature meats available in stores nationwide.

BEGINNINGS

Taylor and Katie never foresaw their path in regenerative agriculture. After starting their food brand, Epic, they experienced agriculture, regeneration, and soil health firsthand, which culminated in launching Roam Ranch.

Their first two years were difficult, as the caliche-laden land was desolate. However, through partnering with nature, the earth at the 900-acre ranch has been transformed.

BISON

Bison are a key element in restoring the soil at this sanctuary. Taylor explains, “They are a keystone species—they have a disproportionately positive impact on all of life. Their mere presence here creates an opportunity for more biodiverse species to thrive.”

Bison’s innate behaviors have a strong impact on the ecosystem. The unique microbiome in the bison’s saliva awakens the dormant seeds in the ground, stimulating new growth. Their spade-shaped hooves chip away and aerate the soil, allowing rainfall to effectively infiltrate.

Where the bison wallow, seeds on their coat spread new plants. Their oil creates a patch where grass can’t grow and rainwater pools. “When it rains, water holds, and suddenly—you would not expect a frog to be out in the middle of this pasture—but there’s water, birds, and dragonflies.”

These animals create a highly concentrated manure cycling of nutrients. “The bison give so disproportionally. They are so much more than livestock; they’re truly just these incarnated souls.”

WHAT IS REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE?

This model of symbiotic living is not only changing this sliver of Texas but is also being replicated globally. “It is the only model that will be able to produce food in the future,” says Taylor.

Katie explains regenerative agriculture: “It’s working with nature to create a net positive impact on the environment.” Rather than maintaining or degenerating the land, regenerative agriculture lets natural cycles in nature get oriented without pesticides or fertilizer.

“A big part of regenerative agriculture is being curious and open-minded enough to ask questions such as, ‘Why did that plant grow there and not here?’ It’s about constantly observing … walking in with a mindset of learning from the earth and letting go of preconceived notions.”

Sometimes surrendering to nature can feel unnatural to people. “We want to dominate and control,” says Katie. “We’ve always been in charge, and this is more about letting go. ‘What am I going to do today to make this place better?’” Sometimes less is more.

WHERE DOES HOPE GROW?

As their podcast is titled, hope grows on Roam Ranch. Taylor expounds, “Hope is the greatest act of rebellion. Without hope, people are easily controlled and manipulated. Without hope, you throw up your hands and lose the instinct for action. If you have hope, you unlock creative potential and start imagining and reimagining a future. Positive change is all seated with hope. Without hope, you have nothing.”

“The bison give so disproportionally. They are so much more than livestock; they’re truly just these incarnated souls.”

In a time when our culture is suffering from chronic disease, lack of time outdoors, unhealthy food sources, isolation, and distraction through technology, Taylor observes, “Humanity is connected to the land, specifically the condition of the soil. There’s an inseparable connection that is screaming at us louder than at any point in history. If we can heal our soil, we can heal our civilization.”

Making change can be as easy as taking time to observe and be grateful for the plants and wildlife you have access to. This is Katie’s call to “rewild” and receive the gift of the outdoors.

GET INVOLVED

1. Shake the hand of someone who feeds you.

2. Participate in a guided hunt or processing day at Roam Ranch.

3. Purchase Force of Nature meats.

“A love for the land is in all of us. We’ve been removed from land as a culture. It’s not counter-cultural at all. It’s incredibly instinctual to get down to the earth," concludes Katie.

STRENGTHENING FOSTER CARE THROUGH COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Foster Village was born from the hearts of real foster parents, Chrystal and Nick Smith, who deeply understood the overwhelming challenges of the foster care system. Chrystal saw firsthand the gaps that left families struggling and children without the support they needed to truly thrive, which spurred her into action. With this experience in mind, and with the support of her husband and other local foster parents, Chrystal set out to create something that would make a difference—something that would give foster families and children a fighting chance.

It’s a sobering reality that most foster families foster for less than a year, and nearly 50 percent of them quit after their very first placement. The emotional, physical, and logistical demands can be too much to bear without the right support. Foster Village steps in to fill those gaps, providing crucial services that empower both caregivers and the children in their care.

Each fall, Foster Village hosts its annual Grow the Village Gala, where our mission-driven community comes together in a big way to support an even bigger cause. The event features an exciting silent auction and a live auction with the Cowboy Auctioneers, along with raffle prizes that have included luxurious vacations, diamond jewelry, artwork, and even a Bernedoodle puppy—all generously donated by community members. This year marked a record-breaking achievement, as the gala raised $500,000 in funds that will be put to great use in supporting Foster Village’s mission.

Foster Village equips caregivers and children with essentials like beds, car seats, and clothing, ensuring families are ready from day one. Additionally, their “welcome packs,” delivered within 24 hours, help ease the stress of new placements. Beyond material support, Foster Village encourages community and therapeutic support services among foster, kinship, reunifying, and adoptive families, connecting them with experts to navigate the complexities of caring for children who have experienced trauma. They also advocate for systemic change, raising awareness and pushing for reforms to address the root causes of foster care and help families break cycles of generational adversity.

Foster care may be filled with trials, but through the work of Foster Village, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. Foster Village reminds us that family is about more than blood; it’s about love, stability, and showing up when it matters most. By giving, whether through time, resources, or advocacy, we can all play a part in ensuring every child has the chance to thrive.

One foster mom shares, “Once again, I am so overwhelmed with emotion at the continued support, how blessed we are to be where we are compared to this time last year! The only way I will ever be able to repay the truest, most genuine kindness I have ever known is to pay it forward and be a part of such an awesome organization that gives so much to so many in true need of support ... I am just so thankful.”

Transforming Our Community

One Butterfly and One Book at a Time

Dripping Springs Community Library (DSCL) is fundraising to build a new library building to meet the needs of the growing population in Dripping Springs. Instead of traditional donor recognition through something like brick pavers, DSCL has partnered with renowned Texas glass artist Carlyn Ray to create a permanent art display featuring glass butterflies in the new library. Donors can sponsor a butterfly and create a unique design with Ray’s guidance.

On September 29, DSCL and Ray held their first butterfly design workshop at Deep Eddy Vodka’s tasting room. Ray taught participants how to work with glass to create their own butterfly designs, urging donors to reflect on what the library means to them and transform those emotions into art. The collective power of creativity and community helps form something meaningful, unique, and beautiful. “Having more hands and hearts involved creates a display that is even more special and significant to represent this community,” says Ray.

“The mission of the library is to promote lifelong learning. Learning truly transforms us—the same way that a caterpillar is transformed into a butterfly,” says Sarah Rose, DSCL capital campaign manager. “The generosity is developing our library into a central hub brimming with opportunities for everyone that will transform our community.”

A LEAGUE OF THEIROWN

ARTICLE BY MELISSA SVOBODA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TATE GEBHART
YOUTH BASEBALL LEAGUE BUILDS CHARACTER AND COMMUNITY
“We want the kids to learn to love through giving.”

On a warm Sunday morning, a team of young boys, clad in maroon caps and jerseys, gathers on the baseball diamond before their game begins. The coach gives his athletes some pointers and a pep talk, and then something unusual happens. Players from the opposing team join the circle around home plate. The boys remove their caps, pray together, and share a quiet time of devotion.

These small baseball players are part of the Dripping Springs Renegades, a select youth baseball league created by Brett and Kirstin Scherer. Proud parents of 7-year-old Colton and 11-year-old Jaden, the Scherers had prayed about building a different kind of sports organization that would grow young men through the game of baseball while focusing on God and the community.

In summer 2024, Brett and Kirstin’s dream took shape, and Renegades now boasts five teams comprising players ages 6 through 11. “We hope to create an affordable club that helps the kids grow in their

love of the game, but also prepares them for success in all sports, becoming champions on and off the field,” shares Brett.

Karyna Donley, whose 6-year-old son Josiah plays on the youngest Renegades team, was glad to find an organization that balances high-quality training with faith, family, and community. “We’re really excited about this team that aligns with our family values,” she says. “It’s a breath of fresh air.”

From its inception, the Scherers’ vision for the Renegades centered on God, followed by goals, grind, and growth—a standard that became known as the G4 model. “We wanted kids and parents to always know who we are and what we are about,” says Brett. “God comes first.”

After God, Renegades focuses on setting goals for its teams and individual players. “If we start showing kids at a young age how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, we are setting them up to succeed in life as well as sports,” says Brett.

“If we start showing kids at a young age how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, we are setting them up to succeed in life as well as sports.”

This hard work defines the “grind.” Brett explains, “We want the boys to understand that nothing is given on the baseball field nor in life. You have to work hard and earn it.”

As for growth, “this sport is not about the wins and losses,” Brett shares. “It’s the process and the journey in baseball that is a bigger win.” The Renegades are dedicated to becoming stronger competitors as well as better teammates, friends, and sons.

Donley sees the results of the league’s commitment to its G4 model. “The amount of growth, development, and intentionality that our kids have received has been incredible,” she says. “We have been absolutely impressed with the coaching, the talent, and the attention that has been dedicated to training our boys. The boys are getting better every single week.”

Renegades also recognizes the importance of balance. The league encourages players to participate in multiple sports and is mindful of its families’ resources and busy lives. “It’s a little more budget friendly—both your financial budget and your time budget,” Donley notes. “It’s great to be able to encourage and develop your young athlete while having time to do other things.”

Seeking to develop well-rounded individuals, the Renegades are also committed to becoming champions of their town, with a strong sense of community and a passion for giving back. “We want the kids to learn to love through giving,” shares Kirstin.

To this end, each Renegades team has chosen an organization to serve. For instance, one team will support Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which builds and delivers beds to ensure safe, comfortable sleeping

conditions for children in need. Another team picked Service Dogs, Inc., a Dripping Springs nonprofit that trains and transforms unwanted shelter dogs to become service dogs. Still other teams have chosen to serve through Christmas on Mercer and a local retirement home.

“We are showing these boys that giving back to the community is just as important, if not more important, than winning a ring or a trophy,” says Brett. “If we start this while they are young, there is no telling what kind of ripple effect it may have long term.”

In true Dripping Springs spirit, the Renegades program depends on a supportive network of parents, coaches, neighbors, and friends. “We’re all in it together,” shares Donley, whose husband is also a volunteer assistant coach. “There is a great camaraderie; the kids and all of the families have cultivated some really great friendships.”

You may even see members of the Dripping Springs High School baseball team at Renegades practices, with the high school players helping and mentoring the younger kids, who admire and look up to the older athletes.

“I still think of Drip as our smalltown community, no matter how large it grows,” says Brett. “We still want programs that treat it as such—a helping-hands community, a loving community, a giving community.”

“The big reason many folks moved to this amazing place cannot be forgotten or dismissed,” he continues. “We have to keep pushing to make sure that these principles last, and that starts with showing kids how important they are.”

Homemade Holiday Joy Worth Sharing

CINNAMON CHIP SWIRL LOAF AND HOMEMADE CINNAMON ROLLS

CINNAMON CHIP SWIRL LOAF

Supplies:

• Kitchen scale

• Large bowl

• Bench scraper

• Banneton

• Razor blade

Ingredients:

• 380 grams organic unbleached bread flour plus 40 grams whole wheat flour

• 306 grams water

• 85 grams active sourdough starter at its peak (two to three times its original size); please feed your starter 12 hours prior

• 10 grams salt

• Rice flour (for sprinkling in the banneton)

• Add-ins: 1/3 cup cinnamon chips, cinnamon powder

Directions:

In a medium-sized bowl, add your active starter and water. Mix with a wooden spoon or spatula. Add the flour and salt. Using your hands, mix the dough very thoroughly, until there are no dry bits of flour or lumps and all of the salt has dissolved (you shouldn't feel any grains). This may take a few minutes. Using a bench scraper, scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure that everything is incorporated. Cover with plastic or a damp tea towel. Allow the mixture to sit for one hour (this hour begins as soon as you start mixing your dough with your hands).

Next, start your folds. To perform a coil fold, wet both of your hands, then scoop them underneath the dough and pull it up and toward yourself. After pulling the dough up and in, place it back in the bowl, letting it coil over itself. Do this in the same direction until all of the dough has been lifted from the bowl and coiled. Then, turn the bowl 90 degrees and repeat the process on each side of the dough. Cover the bowl, and allow it to rest. Perform a total of four coil folds, each 30 minutes apart. During the second coil, fold in the cinnamon chips.

After your last fold, let your dough sit untouched and covered for four to five hours, until it is fully proofed. This amount of time is completely dependent on temperature, including dough temperature and ambient temperature.

Then it’s time to pre-shape. Place a bench scraper underneath the dough at a 45-degree angle. Using circular motions, scrape the dough under itself and toward you to create a round, tight ball of smooth dough. Allow this to rest for 20 to 30 minutes, covered by a tea towel.

Sprinkle a banneton with rice flour and cinnamon powder. Sprinkle a light coating of flour on your shaping surface. Use the bench scraper to flip the dough upside down onto your floured surface, and then mold into desired shape. (I have many videos on Instagram and Facebook on this.)

After shaping your dough, cover it, put it in the refrigerator overnight, and bake the following morning.

Preheat your oven to 500 degrees with your cast iron/Dutch oven in the oven. Once preheated, take your cold dough out of the refrigerator and put it on a piece of parchment paper. Sprinkle it with flour and use a razor to score your bread. Place it in the Dutch oven (still on the parchment paper) and bake for 23 minutes. Lower heat to 450 degrees, remove the lid, and bake for another 18 minutes or until golden brown.

The holidays are about warmth, love, and a dash of sweetness in every bite.
My favorite part is sharing my love of baking with family and friends, filling bellies and filling our home with laughter and togetherness.

CINNAMON ROLLS

Ingredients: Dough

• 1 package yeast (2¼ teaspoons)

• 1 cup milk

• ½ cup granulated sugar

• 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus up to ½ cup more as needed

• 6 tablespoons butter, diced and softened

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 2 large eggs

Filling

• 1 stick butter, softened

• ½ cup brown sugar, packed

• ½ cup white sugar

• 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Frosting

• ¾ cup cream cheese

• 1 cup icing sugar, or more to taste

• ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

• Pinch of salt

Directions:

Warm milk to around 100 degrees. This will take 30 to 45 seconds in the microwave—do not use milk that is hotter than 105 degrees, or you will destroy the yeast.

Place yeast in a small bowl with 1 tablespoon warm milk and 1 teaspoon sugar. Stir, then let sit for five minutes, until bubbles appear on the surface.

Place flour, butter, salt, eggs, yeast mixture, and remaining milk and sugar in the bowl of your stand mixer. Stir a little to roughly combine.

Knead with the dough hook on medium speed until dough forms a ball. It should be completely smooth. If dough doesn't form a ball, add more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing on low speed, until dough pulls together (do not add too much flour, or dough will have a biscuit-like texture). Kneading can take around 10 to 12 minutes, so be patient.

Place dough in a greased bowl. Shape into a ball, pinching the bottom to form a smooth surface. Place it seam-size down, then cover with a clean tea towel. Let the dough rise in a warm place for one hour, or until doubled in size.

Dust work surface with flour. Turn out dough on floured surface, punch down and roll into a rectangle, about 18 by 12 inches and ¼ inch thick. Spread softened butter over dough. Combine both sugars and the cinnamon for the filling in a small bowl. Evenly sprinkle over butter. Roll up into a log from the longer side and pinch the seam to seal. Situate the log seam-side down and slice into 12 rolls (I use a piece of sewing thread or dental floss for neat rolls).

Place rolls in greased 9×13-inch pan. Cover with tea towel and let sit until almost doubled in size, about 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake rolls for 18 to 20 minutes or until lightly golden brown. If center rolls aren't baked after 20 minutes, tent pan with aluminum foil and bake up to 15 to 20 extra minutes.

Place ingredients for the frosting in a medium mixing bowl. Beat with a hand mixer until smooth.

Once cinnamon rolls are done, remove pan from oven and place on a wire rack. Let sit for five minutes, and then frost rolls while still warm.

WINTERWONDERLAND S

December Wanderlust; Dreamy Holiday Destinations

December is a season that evokes feelings of warmth, joyful childhood wonder, and cherished family traditions. Simple moments at home—enjoying a warm cup of hot cocoa by the fire, baking Christmas cookies, or watching a favorite holiday movie—mean time spent with loved ones taking in the splendor of the season. December is also a wonderful time to travel, and dreamy winter destinations can truly capture the magic of the holidays. For those seeking to create their own winter story, here are some exceptional winter destinations...

NEW YORK CITY— ICONIC CHRISTMAS

From the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, to ice skating in Central Park below the city skyline, to marveling at the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, NYC is calling you this winter. Storefronts are dressed in their holiday best and chestnuts are roasting on street corners, conjuring the magic of the season. Wander through Bryant Park’s Christmas Village, where artisans offer unique gifts, and sip seasonal beverages like eggnog while viewing Christmas lights from a rooftop lounge.

QUEBEC— A DREAMY, WINTERY JEWEL BOX

The quaint streets of the French-Canadian city transform into a French fairytale illuminated by twinkle lights and sparkling stars. Begin at the traditional German Christmas market in Old Quebec City, where you can sip glühwein and shop. From there, stroll over to the historic Quartier du Petit Champlain, which looks like a dreamy holiday village with its charming boutiques and cobblestone streets. Take in the Christmas tree at the picturesque Place Royale. For the more adventurous, enjoy snow tubing and ice skating in town before finishing your day with a delicious French-inspired dish and a Bûche de Noël for dessert.

VANCOUVER AND WHISTLER— PACIFIC NORTHWEST CHARM

Begin your journey in Vancouver and enjoy the best of the holidays in this world-class city that features classics like the Stanley Park Christmas Train, the Festival of Lights at VanDusen, a Christmas ship parade, and a traditional European Christmas market. Travel farther north and arrive in Whistler, where winter adventures abound in a charming pedestrian ski village. Grab a smoked Old Fashioned après ski by a crackling fire in the lively base village.

BEAVER CREEK— LUXURY SKI DESTINATION

Colorado has many fabulous skiing destinations, but the Beaver Creek experience is something special. This stunning ski town, nestled high in the mountains just west of Vail, has all the winter magic in a small-town setting. This village seamlessly blends luxury with adventure, offering expert ski trails as well as snowshoeing, ice skating, snow tubing, and dogsledding. Delight in a warm cup of hot cocoa as you hear the jingle bells and watch the snowflakes fall on your evening sleigh ride.

We wish you a very merry holiday season and a happy 2025! May you create unforgettable memories this winter.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
