A Trip Around the Sun
Thank you for the encouragement and for rooting us on as we navigated these uncharted waters. Thank you to those who with vulnerability have shared their stories. You are setting this publication apart. Flip to page 14 as we get candid in celebration of our anniversary.
With a new month upon us, summer break is coming to an end and the back-to-school rush is nearing. Let’s lighten our moods by opening the pages to some remarkable kids and adorable animals.
Newly married, my husband and I adopted two husky mixes. They were our fur-children. Riding in the passenger seat of my Mitsubishi Eclipse with their endless slobber and scratching the heck out of my legs trying to hang out my window, the dog-mom in me didn’t care, because they were happy. When I became pregnant, they would rest their head on my growing belly. We all knew things were changing. Our sweet pups became second place to our first son; soon he began to love them as well. Throwing their balls, taking our place as their cuddle buddy, it was something we had dreamt of.
The bond between kids and their furry friends is undeniable. Responsibility, empathy and companionship; there is no doubt my dogs helped teach my sons essential life skills. Not only that, children and animals alike bring an immense amount of joy to those around them, leaving a positive impact on our community.
From kid yoga to dog camp, the pages this month are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Helping Children Learn, Explore and Heal through Nature
The magic of Texas Hill Country is undeniable. From the majestic live oaks and cooling rivers to the springtime wildflowers and golden sun, spending time outside here is to be forever changed.
When Don and Randy Barr purchased historic acreage on the north shore of Lake Travis as a family retreat in 1999, the two brothers and Don’s late wife, Jeri, set out to also create a 40-acre refuge for local underserved children to experience the beauty that is Central Texas. Their determination to share the land with those who would not otherwise have access to the calming influence of nature resulted in Candlelight Ranch.
Since then, the Ranch’s impact has grown exponentially. They now partner with more than 35 nonprofits and schools and have more than 230 volunteers.
According to Executive Director Jenn Hartner, in 2022 alone they delivered “16,000 hours of direct programming to more than 1,791 children and their families, providing them with a day of fun, healing, learning and respite in nature.”
Their nature-based, hands-on programs serve children and their families, whose health, trauma or financial barriers would otherwise prohibit them from spending time in an outdoor environment. Ranch staffers listen to groups’ needs and tailor 1-, 2-, or 3-day visits to specific goals, such as building confidence or overcoming fears. Activities include ropes courses, equine-assisted learning, zip lining and hiking, among others. Monthly Military Family days are also available free of cost to service members and their families.
Campers notice increased self-confidence, empathy and patience after their visits. Moreover, groups report a decrease in stress with even just one day at
Candlelight Ranch. The healing effects of nature and the guidance of the experienced staff cannot be overstated. One camper reflects, “Candlelight Ranch has helped me understand that I can still control my goals no matter what’s going on in my life, no matter all the chaos in my life. They believe in me and help me believe in myself.” Others confirm they would spend more time in nature as a result of their experience.
“It’s the smiles on kids’ faces, parents realizing their kids can do so much more than they thought and seeing our network of enthusiastic supporters grow to help communities in Central Texas that keep me going after almost 14 years here,” Jenn says. “Our hope is that we are instilling a love of nature and that our campers and volunteers will want to go home and replicate these experiences in their communities.”
Acknowledging that getting outside can be challenging for everyone, she suggests starting with a morning walk, listening to birds outside and visiting local and regional parks, such as the Wildflower Center and Pedernales Falls.
In 2021, Candlelight Ranch joined the Colorado River Land Trust. With the Austin area’s explosive population growth and the resulting loss of green space, permanently protecting the organization’s 40-acres of land through conservation will preserve the Ranch experience for generations of Texans to come.
Candlelight Ranch is open to new partners, sponsors and volunteers, and their largest fundraising event is right around the corner! For how to get involved, more information on their annual gala, Light a Path, or how to host a corporate retreat at the Ranch, visit candlelightranch.org or follow them on social media @CandlelightRanch.

Pets are not just man’s best friend; they are also members of our families. As pet owners, we want to ensure that our furry friends feel comfortable and happy in our homes while maintaining a stylish and aesthetically pleasing living space. In this article, we will explore creative ideas and practical tips for seamlessly integrating pets into the interior design, creating a harmonious and pet-friendly home.
1. PET-FRIENDLY FURNITURE
When selecting furniture for your home you want to think of high-performance, stain-resistant fabrics and metal or durable (not chewable) furniture legs. Microfiber, Ultrasuede, leather or Crypton are great fabric choices. You can find high performance and washable upholstery in almost any store now that is not only great for pets but also comfortable and aesthetically fitting for
your design. Choose drapes, pillows and rugs that are in the same color tones as your pet. Finding fashionable throw blankets that you can easily wash is much easier than cleaning upholstery. Most important is to find a cozy spot, bed or scratch post that your pets know is a safe area of their own. This will help keep your furniture looking fresh and pet free much longer.
2. STYLISH STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Dedicating a drawer or cabinet in the laundry room or mud area of your home is always a good way to keep your pets’ items nicely tucked away. If you don't have free cabinet space, you can have a cute basket full of toys that looks tidy and is easily accessible. Containers for pet food and treats are a good way to get the big bulky bags off your pantry floor and look organized.
3.
Creating a corner for your pet will both be cute in your home and cozy for your furry friend. Building a crate into a cabinet or using the empty space for a tiny animal house under your stairs is a creative way to incorporate design into your pet space. We are also now building pet drink stations into the bottoms of cabinet areas that have a pot filler for drinking water.
With a little creativity and thoughtful planning, it’s possible to design a home that seamlessly blends pet-friendly features with stylish interior design. By incorporating these ideas and tips, you can create a space where pets and humans can live in harmony, allowing both comfort and beauty to coexist under one roof.

In recent years, the rescue animal crisis in Texas and the U.S. has been devastating. WildWolfePack Treats was born in April 2022 after Bridget Wolfe, a stay-at-home mom of two girls, decided she wanted to help the cause on a larger scale.
As a longtime volunteer, Bridget sees the crisis firsthand at the PAWS Shelter of Central Texas in Dripping Springs, where the same dogs wait to be adopted for weeks, months and, now, years. In response to the immense need, Bridget started making organic homemade, humangrade dog treats out of her home, and donates 50% of her sales to PAWS. After less than a year in business, she has already been able to donate more than $5,000.
Bridget hasn’t stopped there. She started another project called Paws for Your Thoughts, where she advocates for the long-stay dogs at her local PAWS.
Her dog treats are sold at Rolling in Thyme & Dough and Happy Hounds Pet Salon, which are both in Dripping Springs, as well as on her website. You can find her at @wildwolfepacktreats and @pawsforyourthoughts on Instagram and Facebook. Any worries are washed away by the fun aesthetic, old-school arcade games and overhead TVs at the dental chairs. Ultimately, a dental visit is not something a child willingly hops in the car for. Dr. Wildey and her team have set out to change that.
“From the moment we walk in it feels like we’re being greeted by family,” a Google reviewer expressed. There is no shortage of doting on Dr. Sarah Wildey and her team at Wildey Pediatric Dentistry when searching the web. Located in the heart of Dripping, close to the actual springs, Wildey Pediatric Dentistry will make a child’s eyes pop with excitement, forgetting all about the treatment at hand.
An accounting graduate at Texas Tech University, Dr. Wildey went on to complete her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas where she also served as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Pediatric Dental department. She received her advanced pediatric training through the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio with a special focus on sedation and patients with special health care needs.
A member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Dental Association (ADA), Dr. Wildey is not only passionate about her work with children but also understands the importance of staying up to date on the latest health protocols.
Any worries are washed away by the fun aesthetic, old-school arcade games and overhead TVs.
A mom of two, Dr. Wildey has firsthand experience helping youth. If a challenging patient situation arises, she handles it with grace and patience. Pediatric dental care may be an afterthought for some, yet it’s imperative to one’s overall health. We asked Dr. Wildey to address some frequently asked questions that come up with young patients.
The AAPD guidelines say six months after their first tooth comes in or by their first birthday. This is important to receive anticipatory guidance and to monitor normal growth and development. It also helps the child get used to coming into the office and having dental checkups as a normal part of their healthcare routine.
Yes. We usually start taking X-rays around the age of 4 when their teeth are in contact. We check for cavities as well as bone health and normal growth and development.
Baby teeth are just as important as permanent teeth. They affect a child’s growth, speech and nutrition.
“It’s an honor to serve this community. I love working with children, seeing recurring families, and watching them grow.” Wildey Pediatric Dentistry is located at 400 US-290, Building B, Suite 201, Dripping Springs.
We feel it is important to not only focus on the dental aspect of our practice, but to also make patients feel comfortable and treat them as family. We provide many comprehensive dental services and enjoy treating people of all ages. We look forward to the opportunity to meet you and build a lasting relationship.
Dentists, Dr. Gianna Quintana and Dr. Christopher DeMarco, are excited and honored to be serving the Dripping Springs community by providing comprehensive dental care. Dr. Heather Bobb, the former dentist of this office, recently moved to Georgia and selected them to continue serving her patients.
Del Sol Yoga and Kung Fu studio owners Claudia Castro-Leverett and Thomas Leverett established their studio in 2007 to encourage individuals and help them discover their personal power. Their teaching focuses on applying ancient practices of yoga, meditation and kung fu to everyday life.
Del Sol recently launched a Kids Yoga Series and plans to offer regular kids yoga classes starting this fall. The hour-long classes cater specifically to children ages 4 to 10 and align with adult yoga class schedules. While parents are welcome to observe, the classes encourage children to practice independence while allowing parents to enjoy their own practice simultaneously.
“Practicing yoga offers numerous benefits for children, especially in today’s world filled with screens and distractions. Yoga helps children slow down, focus and be present,” says Faye Sokol, Del Sol’s kids yoga teacher. “Through breath, movement and meditation, yoga stimulates the brain and cultivates a strong mind-body connection. It teaches children emotional regulation, provides an exciting activity to share with others, and fosters personal integrity and strength.”
ARTICLE BY CHRISTINA THOMPSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN HAFNERDel Sol’s kids yoga classes include physical postures, breathing exercises, meditation, mantras, games, dancing, and arts and crafts. The classes are interactive and engaging, featuring activities such as breath-focused meditation, visualization techniques, partner and group poses, energizing games, dances and songs. They accommodate children of different skill levels and experiences with yoga.
In addition to yoga, Del Sol offers youth kung fu programs, which help children develop strength, inner wisdom and mental stimulation. “Kung fu cultivates awareness
of one’s surroundings, teaching children to move gracefully and powerfully,” says Thomas. “Through rigorous training, children develop a strong work ethic and the ability to master themselves.”
Del Sol’s kids yoga and kung fu programs aim to empower children, fostering confidence, courage and calmness in any situation. Claudia states, “These offerings provide a holistic approach to physical and mental well-being for children, creating opportunities for growth, self-expression and personal development.”

Sunrise Christian Schoolhouse is a private school set to open this fall in the heart of Dripping Springs off Roger Hanks Parkway and Old Hwy 290.
SCS was founded by a local Dripping Springs family, James and Sarah Kuykendall, who are parents to 7-year-old twin girls, Eden and Emery, and a 5-year-old son, Ancil. In searching for a private school for their twins, the Kuykendalls quickly realized there were limited options beyond preschool and kindergarten for families in the area.
In collaboration with local, Christian educators, James and Sarah stepped out in faith to create a community where like-minded families can connect and support each other and a school that offers a distinctive academic experience focused on providing students with a firm foundation through a Christ-centered, classically inspired education.
Classical education isn’t a particularly new way of teaching; rather, it has its roots in ancient history and dates as far back as the time of Aristotle and Plato. It was the way in which most of our Founding Fathers were educated. As the co-founder of Classical Academic Press, Christopher Perrin, Ph.D., states, “The renewal of classical education is not a nostalgic return to the past. It’s a recovery of those ideas and methods that have always created the future.”
This approach aligns instruction and curriculum to a child’s cognitive development and is based on the
“trivium”: the grammar stage (focused on knowledge), the logic stage (focused on reasoning) and the rhetoric stage (focused on articulation and expression). The main objective of a classical education is to teach students how to learn rather than what to learn, thereby giving students the tools to become life-long learners.
During the grammar stage, the mind is a sponge for knowledge. These early years are filled with learning facts and information. SCS’s goal is to provide students with the building blocks for a strong education through a well-rounded academic experience enriched by biblical truths.
The school will serve students in first through fourth grade with hopes of adding additional grades in the future. Parent involvement is welcomed, and there are plenty of opportunities for families to be a part of school life. Classes are intentionally set to have a low student to teacher ratio (10:1), allowing for opportunities to focus on the whole child. As first grade teacher Emily Weyel states, “My hope is to plant, nurture and grow a passion for education in your students. In my classroom, we ask questions. We discover and explore.” The teaching staff at SCS are highly passionate and experienced educators whose focus is to provide a quality education that will help their students thrive.
At the core of the school’s heart is the desire to leave a positive impact on the Dripping Springs community. Community service and volunteering are built into the school’s programs to encourage good citizenship among students. James and Sarah lead the way by setting an example with their own involvement in local nonprofits and organizations. “Dripping Springs is our home. We want to raise the next generation to understand the importance of taking care of our neighbors as we serve one another,” says James. Sunrise Christian Schoolhouse is currently enrolling students. Ben Fox always knew he wanted to own his own veterinarian clinic. He grew up in Seguin and met his wife, Alyssa, in his final months of vet school at Texas A&M. He practiced in Lockhart and the couple married and moved to Uvalde, where they had their first child, Hadley.
They thought it would be their forever home. However, Alyssa’s parents lived in Dripping Springs. “Whenever I had a weekend off of work, we would drive to Dripping and spend the weekend there,” says Ben. “We enjoyed the scenery, the people, the breweries, and wanted to be closer to family. We gradually came to the realization that this is where we wanted to raise our family.”
The family added a daughter, Birdie, and they moved to Southwest Austin in 2018. Ben started picking up relief shifts at various clinics throughout the city. All the while, he planned to start Fox Veterinary Services. He traveled the area doing mobile visits out of his truck until he acquired his own space in December 2021.
“It wasn’t easy, but fortunately, throughout this process, Alyssa was able to carry more of the weight of the finances while I got the clinic rolling,” he says.
Along with dogs, Rocky and George, and cat, Sully, the Fox family grew again in 2022 with the birth of their second son, Nolan.
“We are a family-owned small business. You will likely see one of our kids at the clinic helping out,” he says. “Hadley often sits in the surgery suite, and when Birdie comes by, she basically becomes our office manager.”
Fox Veterinary Services stands apart by serving the community at the clinic and going wherever animals need help. “We’ll do house calls, and we make it our goal to communicate exceptionally well with clients,” Ben says.
“We love that Dripping feels like a tight-knit community where we can raise our three kids on some land. We meet people all over, from Mazama Coffee to Stoic Jiu Jitsu, and they trust their animals to us.”
27008 Ranch Rd. 12 512.230.1720 | foxveterinaryservices.com
Dr. Fox’s journey with veterinary services started with a childhood love for animals. Attending Texas A&M, Dr. Fox received his bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science then continued his education graduating from A&M's College of Veterinary Medicine.
When 9-year-old Jayci Goldsmith started playing tennis, it would be hard to imagine her future in the sport. She grew up in Dripping Springs and won the Texas state championship in both her junior and senior years at DSHS.
“Growing up, my tennis goal was to play at a Division 1 college on a full scholarship. I achieved that,” says Jayci.
Following graduation, she chose to continue her career at Texas A&M where she became the most decorated Aggie tennis player of all time, breaking school records with 116 singles and 123 doubles victories.
“What an amazing career Jayci has had for the Aggies,” head coach Mark Weaver says. “Her five years have gone by far too fast. She played a tremendous part in our success in recent years.”
A two-time All-American, Jayci excelled as a teammate as well as an individual.
“Another goal of mine was to get a big ring. The highlight of my college career was winning the SEC Championship my senior year,”
says Jayci. “We beat Georgia in the finals, who beat us the year before. We got our revenge! The celebration and amount of recognition our team got was something I’ll never forget.”
She also thrived off the court, graduating with a degree in University Studies from the prestigious Mays Business School.
For now, her tennis career is over. Despite opportunities to play professionally overseas, Jayci has returned home to Dripping Springs. “I plan to work in Austin. I am taking online classes to finish my master’s this summer and interviewing for jobs,” she says.
“My favorite thing about Dripping Springs would probably be the people and culture,” says Jayci. “My high school coach Cary Jackson was so supportive and understanding. We still keep in touch to this day.”
Jayci grew up playing at the Polo Tennis & Fitness Club where her mother worked. She wants to give back to the community and the sport that gave her so much. “Tennis will always be a huge part of my life. I would love to continue giving lessons.”
For children’s book author and Driftwood, Texas, resident Candy Wellins, writing is life. An author of three celebrated children’s books, she published her first story in 2020 about a boy named George, his beloved grandmother Stella and the traditions their family practices to keep her memory alive. Saturdays Are for Stella went on to become an Amazon Editors’ pick, earned a coveted Kirkus Star and was named a Kirkus Best Picture Book. Candy has been writing and publishing ever since.
For Candy, there’s something quintessential about children’s literature. It’s content people of all ages read, and adults appreciate the stories just as much as kids. “Picture books are the ones that stick with you for life. You remember stories like The Giving Tree and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I had an idea in the back of my head for years to write children’s books, but it felt impossible.”
After more than a decade immersed in children’s literature as an elementary school teacher, Candy met local
author of middle grade and young adult fantasy books Mari Mancusi in 2016 at a Camp Gladiator workout. In between their reps, Candy asked Mari about her path to publishing and realized that the steps Mari described were things she, too, could pursue. In addition to attending conferences and researching literary agents, she enrolled in a children’s book writing course that happened to be minutes away from her at The Writing Barn in Austin.
She credits her success in large part to the remarkable community of children’s book authors and illustrators she met there who call the Hill Country home. She says, “It’s a community of really good people where everybody is cheering for each other,” which was particularly helpful for an author making her debut during the pandemic.
Drawing inspiration from her life, Candy includes themes of love, resilience and strength in her work. The importance of family shines through in each of her books. “Family is the root of all stories,” she says. “When you write from the heart, that’s the stuff that resonates with readers.”
In Mabel’s Topsy-Turvy Homes, Candy speaks to the ups and downs of children with divorced parents, an experience she knows firsthand from her own childhood. Her goal is “find that one kid who really connects with the story and help them feel like they’re being seen, like they’re not alone.” One young reader identified with the main character so much after reading the book that she came to class dressed as Mabel.
The author gave the same care and consideration to her children’s biography of Edward White, the first American to walk in space. A beautiful read for all kids and their families but especially those here in Texas, The Stars Beckoned: Edward White’s Amazing Walk in Space tells the story of the astronaut from San Antonio who as a child “loved the night, lived where the stars were big and bright” and never wanted to come inside when his mother called him. When children read Candy’s stories, they see themselves in the characters
who persevere past challenges to find belonging and purpose, much like the inspiring author herself.
Young readers and their families will be happy to know Candy has a fourth title, A Geoduck Is Not a Duck , coming out in 2024. When she’s not writing, coming up with new story ideas or spending quality time with her three young children and husband, you can find her teaching at The Writing Barn. To stay up to date with her latest releases, visit candywellins.com or follow her on Instagram @candywellins.

The Lloyd Family Journey
ARTICLE BY KRISTEN HAFNERAt a young age, Kimberly Lloyd was introduced to fostering through her parents, who fostered children for six years. There were trying times, but even in her youth, Kimberly saw the importance of her parents’ mission and the positive impact they were having on the kids who lived with them.
“The experience always stuck with me, and when I began dating Bryon, I asked him if he would ever want to foster children someday. He felt the same way I did and said yes.”
When their youngest biological child was 5, the Lloyds felt God nudging, telling them it was the right time to open their home. “We had no plans to adopt, we just wanted to be a safe haven for children who needed one while their parents worked to get them back home,” says Kimberly.
In January of 2017, the Lloyds became licensed foster parents and were soon matched with a 3-year-old boy, David. He had been through significant trauma, and his case lasted 18 months. In the end, the Lloyd family adopted him with much joy. David is now 10.
Selfless hardly begins to describe this family. The Lloyds have fostered 17 children over the last six years, with three cases leading to adoption. The rest have either returned home, gone to family or been adopted by other families.
Two weeks ago, the Lloyds got a call from CPS about two young children they fostered from September of 2020 to May of 2022. They were going back into care and needed somewhere to go. Kimberly and Bryon were about
to adopt their youngest son and close their home, which meant they would no longer be foster parents. They ended up taking both children, ages 2 and 3, back in as a kinship placement, joining the Lloyds’ biological children, Jack (age 16), Carys (age 14) and Hazel (age 12), and adopted children, David (age 10), Josiah (age 3) and Sebastian (almost 2 years old), in their family.
Their story would not be possible without the help of Foster Village. A friend of Kimberly’s who is a foster parent told her about a volunteer opportunity to sort donations at the nonprofit. “I was so excited about what the organization was doing because I remembered when my parents fostered in the ’90s and how isolated they felt.”
Kimberly quickly saw that Foster Village was filling a gap in the world of foster care. The organization supplies families with clothing, diapers, strollers and car seats. Most importantly they create a safe haven where foster, biological and adoptive families receive ongoing support and care.
Providing a community for these foster parents and children to bond and uplift each other, to share their stories and lean on one another, is what Foster Village has done.
“Foster care burnout is a real thing. The women of Foster Village have all become lifelong friends and allies who have been willing to get in the trenches with us, to laugh and cry alongside us, during what has been both the most challenging and rewarding thing we've ever done.”
Expect amazing things from your kids . Focus on the possibility of success first. Instead of saying, “That is going to be hard. Don’t get your hopes up,” it’s better to show you believe they can do it. Plant the seed of greatness through your expectations and foster a supportive, encouraging dynamic.
Encourage progress, not perfection . Applaud effort and growth, not just the end result. Rather than saying, “You got all A’s! I’m so proud of you,” try to say, “I’m proud of your hard work to make this happen.” Nurture their belief in limitless potential.
Create a safe space. We must build a foundation of mutual trust, transparency and respect. Help them pursue a skill or hobby that makes them happy, not one that makes you happy. Ask questions about their dreams and fears, and keep the lines of communication open without judgment. Show up consistently as someone they can count on to do what you say you will do. Tell them you love them and show them small acts of kindness regularly.
ARTICLE BY MELANIE SOMMERToday’s world is filled with negative influences and heartbreaking stories of children struggling with depression and anxiety. Adults must become beacons of light, demonstrating values, positivity and hope.
It’s not always comfortable being the change you hope to see in others. We need our actions to break through the noise to encourage our family and those around us to embrace their unique gifts and live up to their true potential.
Kids, especially our teens, face increased stress and anxiety including the overwhelming pressure to be perfect like the influencers they see on social media. They might think they need to earn love and self-worth. It’s important to emphasize unconditional love and acceptance free from the need to prove themselves.
Motivate your kids to go big . Going the safe route limits potential. Taking a risk and going after a big goal allows us to see what we’re made of. It’s how we become better.
Our moods and personalities influence our children and their potential through emotional contagion. Your energy, positive or negative, affects others consciously and unconsciously. Take a look at how you’re showing up at home. By managing your emotions, you can transmit positivity, hope and excitement by embodying those qualities yourself.
Now is the time to double down on your positive influence. As a community, we can change the trajectories of our youth and help them reach greater heights than ever imagined.

Diana Ozimek discovered her love for training dogs while volunteering with animal care and control in Chicago. After working with court case dogs, she felt compelled to become a trainer. She sold her fitness company and fully immersed herself in dog training.
Diana and her family moved to Dripping Springs in 2020, and she opened Good Dog in the Making, training dogs throughout Dripping Springs and the surrounding areas. She rents space at Dog Camp in Driftwood for her training and enrichment sessions and offers a full range of in-home dog training services.
In summer, it’s important to consider the specific temperatures and take precautions accordingly. It’s best to go outside early or late in the day when the sun isn’t scorching. Look for pet-friendly areas where dogs can swim or set up sprinklers for them to cool off.
Engage them in indoor activities like puzzles, nose work and interactive play to keep them mentally stimulated. You can even play hide-and-seek with your dog by throwing a ball and then hiding. Frozen treats are another great idea. You can freeze ingredients such as bone broth, berries, cheese, ice cubes or treats in a Kong toy. Consider providing cooling mats for them to lie on. Opt for raised beds that allow air circulation instead of fluffy beds that can retain heat. Place the raised beds in shaded areas to enhance airflow. Regularly brush your dog to remove excess fur since shedding is common in hot weather. Ensure there’s shade and plenty of fresh water available. If your dog enjoys being outside, a mister system can provide additional relief by creating a cool mist for them to rest under.
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE TRAINING AND ENRICHMENT THAT YOU OFFER AT DOG CAMP?
My assistant, Josh, and I both work with the dogs doing a variety of activities throughout the day. While I work on rotating them through training exercises, he implements enrichment activities such as food puzzles, water games, trail walks and agility. He also assists with setting goals for certain dogs, addressing their specific behaviors and needs. As part of our enrichment program, the dogs also play in ball pits and with bubbles for added fun and stimulation.
We are excited to expand our programs and offerings in the coming year.

“I
My son recently graduated from Dripping Springs High School and as moms do, I started reminiscing. I adopted my son as a single mom and figuring out childcare was tough. Trying to balance flexibility, dependability and costs was a challenge. Friends suggested I host an au pair through Cultural Care Au Pair and five au pairs later, I can say it was a great experience!
The program is regulated by the U.S. Department of State and in general, the cost of hosting an au pair is on par or oftentimes less than other options such as daycare and nannies. It also provides much more flexibility.
Au pairs are educated young people from abroad who live in your home, become part of your family and provide up
to 45 hours per week of childcare on a schedule you decide, including mornings, evenings and weekends. They can do tasks related to the children such as meals, laundry, room clean up, chauffeuring, and homework help. Au pairs bring new languages and cultures to your family, fostering a sense of curiosity and a global perspective. My son and I learned so much from our au pairs and are still connected with several of them – one lives nearby and is my son’s “big sister”!
The Dripping Springs area has 27 Cultural Care au pairs and host families. To learn more about Cultural Care Au Pair and determine if an au pair is a good fit for your family, visit culturalcare.com/lcc/vanderson/

There’s a saying in the chiropractic profession: “The only people that need to see a chiropractor are those that have spines.” From birth to adolescence your kids will undergo rapid growth and development. In today’s digital age, children spend increasing amounts of time engaging in activities that often lead to poor posture and altered function. Extended periods of sitting, use of electronic devices and heavy backpacks contribute to these issues. Gentle and safe chiropractic adjustments help address these concerns by conditioning the spine and promoting ideal posture and spinal biomechanics.
Children that participate in physical activities have an increased risk of undetected microinjuries or deviations from normal called “subluxations.” While not immediately life threatening, these small changes in biomechanics can develop into more difficult-to-manage injuries. Seemingly minor issues fester into more apparent ones and eventually require more intensive and expensive intervention.
Fine tuning your kids’ musculoskeletal system as they grow helps to avoid challenging conditions associated with development such as reversed/altered curves in the spine, progressions of scoliosis, leg length inequalities and more. Chiropractic care can also be beneficial in addressing common early childhood conditions such as colic, ear infections, torticollis, ADHD and digestive troubles.
Chiropractors restore balance to the physical body, promote proper function of the nervous system and enhance the body’s ability to heal itself. Consulting with a qualified chiropractor can empower parents with additional options for managing their children’s health and development.
1 Select your preferred cut of beef; it doesn't have to be a hand-cut 3lb tomahawk. A thick-cut ribeye, T-bone, porterhouse, NY strip or baconwrapped filet mignon all work well on the grill and smoker.
2 Season your meat with our Crimson Creek Steak Shaker, or whatever grill seasoning you prefer. I recommend something with a good amount of salt, black pepper and garlic. When it’s fully seasoned, keep going, and make sure you season all sides of the meat.
3 If you choose to smoke your steak for a few hours — or if you just want to quick fire it — either way, make sure the last thing you do is sear it off over extremely hot flames to get that good outer crust and seal in those juices.
4 We finish our tomahawks off with a bath in duck fat, but regular salted butter works just as well. While your steak is resting, add a pat of butter on top to melt into the meat, or serve with some drawn butter on the side for dunking.
1. 2. 3. 4.This super simple, kid-friendly cocktail is reminiscent of an Orange Julius from the mall food court. Any citrus juice will do. This recipe uses limeade and sweetened condensed milk. That may sound odd, but don’t let it scare you. It’s delicious.
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 cups of juice
• 2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk
INSTRUCTIONS:
Throw in a blender and serve over ice.
Or add ice to the blender and make it a slushie.
For an adult version, add your favorite vodka.

ARTICLE BY ALLISON WOODWARD PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTEN HAFNERChickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages. There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Oh and bonus – they make you breakfast.
The eggs from backyard chickens are the best—tastier and fresher than any store-bought eggs. Much of the day, the birds entertain themselves, picking at grass, worms, beetles, and all of the good things that go into making those delicious farm eggs. Plus, with their keen eye for insect pests, chickens make for great gardening companions.
Chickens can provide family companionship, fun, entertainment, sustainable fresh food, and plenty of poop that gardeners prize as a natural fertilizer/composting material. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?
Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.
All of this costs money, of course. The materials to build and furnish a coop and a 20 x 5-foot run—including wood, fencing, and hardware—are going to set you back at least $300. If you can’t do this work yourself, you’ll also be buying skilled labor.
Overall, expect to spend between $500 and $700 when getting started depending on the size of your flock, coop and run. For prefabricated coops, expect to pay $600 or more.
Chickens need to have an enclosed coop that provides adequate space, protection from the elements and predators, and good ventilation. A modified shed, barn, or stable with an outdoor run is a good option for a coop. The outdoor run should be fully enclosed if you have predators like hawks or owls nearby. Ideally, coops are slightly elevated off the ground to prevent flooding and have windows on each side, enough nest boxes to allow several chickens to nest simultaneously, outlets for lighting, fans if they’re needed, air inlets or ventilation holes on the roof, and a concrete floor treated with a pet-safe waterproof coating that allows for easy cleaning and drainage.
Search Pinterest for “chicken coop building plans” if you’re building your own or consider going the luxury route with a gorgeous custom-built coop from a company like CutestCoops.com
Most hens will start laying eggs when they’re about 18 to 20 weeks old, although it may take more time for them to reach their peak output. Often, the first eggs are laid irregularly or are smaller or oddly shaped when compared with a typical egg. This is nothing to worry about! Once a cycle is established, most hens will lay one egg per day.
