Celebrating Our Community’s Artisans and Culinary Treasures
Dear readers,
Our community is full of amazing artisans and restaurants that make our area special. Let’s take a look at some of the best places that bring unique flavors and craftsmanship to our lives!

Maas Coffee Roasters is a coffee lover’s dream. Started in 1995 by Jim Maas in Fort Walton Beach’s Historic District, with another spot in Destin, it’s now run by Teddy and Lupe Batarao and their daugh ter Eliana. They roast small batches of high-quality coffee beans, creating bold and fresh flavors that stand out from regular store-bought coffee. The smell of their coffee reminds me of cozy family mornings, making it a perfect start to any day.
For outdoor lovers, Elite Cabinet Designs creates awesome weather-resistant kitchen cabinets. Their NatureKast Driftwood collection has a cool coastal vibe, and with strong granite countertops, these cabinets make your backyard look fancy and work great for outdoor parties.
When it comes to sweets, Sugar Bomb Bakery makes incredible custom cupcakes for special events. Autumn uses organic, non-GMO ingredients to create delicious flavors like rich red velvet or zesty key lime. Every cupcake is like a little piece of art that tastes as good as it looks.
For dinner, Fudpucker’s Beachside Bar & Grill in Destin is a fun spot with tasty Fudburgers, fresh Gulf shrimp, live music and even alligators to check out! It’s a lively place perfect for families. Another great choice is Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina in Destin, where you can enjoy spicy fajitas, fresh ceviche and desserts like tres leches. Their special Pepper’s Tequila, made from blue agave in Jalisco, Mexico, adds a warm touch to every meal.
These places—Maas Coffee Roasters, Elite Cabinet Designs, Sugar Bomb Bakery, Fudpucker’s and Pepper’s Mexican Grill—are what make our community so special. They’re not just businesses; they’re part of our traditions and creativity, bringing joy to everyone who visits!

COFFEE CULTURE

Maas Coffee Roasters has always been more than a place to get a cup of coffee along the Emerald Coast. Since its beginnings in Fort Walton Beach, the brand has carried a reputation for carefully roasted beans, bold flavors and a community vibe. Generations of customers have come to know Maas Coffee as a roaster first and foremost—a name rooted in quality rather than trends.
In 2023, a new chapter began when Teddy and Lupe Batarao, longtime fans of Maas, decided to acquire the brand. For them, this was not just a business opportunity but a chance to preserve and grow something that mattered to them. Their daughter Eliana now runs the original Fort Walton Beach location, keeping the roots of Maas strong while Teddy and Lupe expand the vision in Destin.

What sets Maas apart from other cafés is that they roast their own beans. The coffee beans are selected with care, roasted with precision and brewed in a way that highlights the unique qualities of each blend. Favorites like Jazz and the Breakfast Roast have developed loyal followings, each carrying flavors that reflect Maas Coffee’s attention to detail and consistency. This dedication to roasting ensures that every cup tastes distinct and fresh—something that can’t be duplicated by relying on outside suppliers.
The Batarao family’s expansion into Destin represents more than just growth; it’s a natural extension of the Maas identity. The new location offers an atmosphere that balances energy with calm—an easy fit for all kinds of gatherings. Students settle into quiet corners with laptops, friends meet for unhurried conversations, and professionals find a comfortable space for meetings. Couples drift in for dates, with the soft hum of conversation and the artistry of a latte setting the perfect tone. Even the café’s simple chess board tells the story of what the Bataraos are building: an environment that encourages connection, thought and time well spent.

What keeps people coming back to Mass Coffee Roasters is the craftsmanship in every drink. The baristas at Maas are not just pouring coffee; they are creating small works of art. Beautiful latte designs such as hearts and leaves float on top of velvety espresso— the kind of detail that makes an ordinary order feel special. It’s a reminder that Maas treats coffee as both a craft and a passion. Customers walk away satisfied, with the memory of a beverage prepared with care.
For Teddy and Lupe, Maas Coffee is about honoring history while embracing the future. They see themselves as stewards of a brand that has meant something to locals for years, while also carrying the responsibility of introducing it to a broader audience. Their love for coffee, combined with their respect for what Maas represents, drives them to protect the roaster’s identity while ensuring it grows in new directions.
As Destin continues to expand and welcome new residents and visitors, Maas Coffee is poised to become a cornerstone of the community. Whether someone has been drinking Maas for years at the Fort Walton location or is walking in for the first time in Destin, the feeling is the same: This is coffee with roots, coffee done right, coffee that connects people.
With cafés competing for attention, Maas Coffee remains something special—a roaster with history, a future guided by passion and a presence that continues to grow without losing sight of what made it iconic in the first place.

Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina brings signature margaritas and authentic Mexican flavor to Destin.
ARTICLE BY LAURA L. WATTS

Bringing signature margaritas and authentic Mexican flavors to Northern Florida since 2005, the Pepper’s brand has established itself as an expert in bold flavors and refreshing beverages crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients.
In January the family-owned company opened its fifth Okaloosa County installment: Pepper's Mexican Grill & Cantina in Destin.
GM/owner Jorge Lopez

Jorge Lopez, general manager and co-owner of the Pepper’s brand of Mexican restaurants, is proud to see how the business has grown since his uncle and cousins invited him to join the company in 2007. He oversees the five Okaloosa County locations, each with a restaurant manager committed to excellence.
In Destin, general manager Jessica Segoviano leads the Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina team in creating personal connections with customers and making them feel part of the Pepper’s family. Jorge and Jessica also foster a welcoming environment for their team members—making it a great place to work, where everyone feels valued and cared for.
Since opening in January 2025, Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina has been a strong community advocate, which Jorge believes is key to the success of the business. The restaurant supports organizations and events throughout the area, particularly local schools and youth sports programs.
“Giving back is our way of expressing gratitude and investing in the future of our community,” says Jorge. “We believe in fostering strong relationships and contributing to the well-being of our neighbors. We are truly grateful to the people who have helped shape us into the successful business we are today.”
In addition to the stellar customer service and community spirit, what keeps customers coming back is the food. Tortillas are made fresh every morning, and prime ingredients like Certified Angus Beef® and the freshest produce are used to scratch-make each dish daily. Generous portions, daily specials and impressive presentations are touchstones of Pepper’s. The menu offers classic Mexican dishes, an extensive fajitas list, a seafood selection including ceviche, and a must-try dessert of churros with ice cream, a chocolate drizzle and a cherry served in a jumbo glass.
It’s these little touches and a dedication to excellence that make Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina a favorite for their clientele. CONTINUED

A defining moment of Jorge’s career has been creating Pepper’s Tequila—an effort five years in the making. The recipe is made in small batches with the finest blue agave and aged in oak barrels in Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico, a region renowned for its rich tradition of tequila-making.
“We partner with a small, family-run distillery that takes immense pride in its work,” Jorge shares. “This close-knit operation allows us to maintain exceptional quality control, with every detail supervised meticulously—from the agave fields to bottling and shipping.”
Pepper’s features four types of tequila, each made with 100% agave: blanco (used in the house margarita), premium blanco, reposado and añejo. Tequila flights give customers a chance to enjoy all four. Jorge’s latest endeavor, which he’s excited to share soon with customers, is an extra añejo tequila that has aged in oak barrels for 82 months.
To ensure his staff’s expertise, Jorge recently brought in a master tequila distiller from the distillery where Pepper’s
Tequila is crafted to share valuable insights on the entire process and the unique flavor profiles. “We believe that when tradition, care and quality come together, the result is something special,” he says. “What truly sets us apart is the heart and soul behind every bottle, the quality and excellence in every sip.”
The restaurant serves a variety of classic and specialty cocktails, including a large selection of margaritas, wine and beer. A popular choice is the Michelada—a Mexican cocktail made with beer, lime juice and assorted sauces, spices and peppers. Two daily happy hours feature twofor-one drinks.
Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina opens daily at 11 a.m. and features a fun atmosphere both indoors and on the patio. For a delicious lunch or dinner, a special-occasion celebration at the restaurant, or event catering off-site, Pepper’s brings fun times and the flavors of Mexico to Destin and beyond.

An outdoor kitchen is more than just a functional space; it is an invitation to embrace Florida’s gorgeous climate while creating lasting memories with loved ones. Whether for an intimate dinner party, a weekend cookout or a poolside pizza night, an entertainment area enhanced by natural beauty provides the perfect setting.
For this project, Elite Cabinet Designs’ goal was to seamlessly blend social interaction with culinary excellence, all while taking advantage of the home’s stunning bay views. The team combined a sophisticated entertaining area with a highly functional prep zone.
The U-shaped island serves as the anchor, with a teppanyaki or flat-top grill fostering an interactive dining experience. Thoughtfully arranged along the back wall are additional cooking and prep stations, equipped with integrated appliances that provide all the necessities for effortless entertaining. Minimalist ventilation solutions offer both functionality and refined visual appeal, drawing the eye toward the unique tiled focal wall that adds a touch of coastal charm.
The warm and inviting Driftwood-style cabinetry, sourced from NatureKast—known for its weatherproof technology—provides generous storage and complements the richly saturated granite countertops. Materials were carefully selected to withstand the elements and maintain beauty over time.
"We wanted to create a space that not only showcases the stunning surroundings but also fosters meaningful connections between people,” says Feather Nolan, one of the designers of this oasis. “By blending style, functionality and durability, we've crafted an outdoor kitchen that will be the backdrop for countless memorable moments."
This outdoor kitchen has transformed the backyard into a luxurious extension of the home, providing endless opportunities for memorable gatherings with family and friends. The boundaries between indoor and outdoor living dissolve, creating a seamless flow where laughter echoes, stories are shared and the joys of coastal living are celebrated.
