This issue holds a special place in my heart and is one of my personal favorites: Kids & Pets!
Children are not just our future—they’re an essential part of our communities today. As parents and caregivers guide their growth, children shape us in return, bringing energy, perspective, and meaning to daily life.
And let’s not forget the incredible role pets play! With their unconditional love, they teach all of us—especially children—valuable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and companionship. The bond between kids and their pets can be truly transformative, creating deep emotional connections that last a lifetime.
Growing up with my childhood dog, Duncan, over 15 years taught me lessons I still carry today. I truly believe every child can benefit from having a bond with a pet—whether it’s a dog, cat, or even a lizard. It’s an experience that builds character and compassion in lasting ways.
At the heart of both children and pets is a simple truth: they need us. Our love and care help shape who they become—and in return, they shape us. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the kids and pets who fill our lives with joy, laughter, and love.
I hope this month’s issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life. They are the ones who remind us of the simple joys and the importance of unconditional love.
In that same spirit of connection and community, we love hearing from our readers. At Denville City Lifestyle, we're always interested in exploring new stories and ideas. If you have an interesting story to share, a business you'd like to introduce to the community, or a special announcement to celebrate, we would love to hear from you! Please send us your photos and details and you might just see your photo or story featured in an upcoming issue. And for more content, follow us on Instagram: @DenvilleCityLifestyle
Here’s to our future, and the kids and pets who make everything better.
Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives and homes.

Mary Shadbolt helps students discover their voice, build confidence, and grow through creative expression.
Some people find art—for Mary Shadbolt, it found her. Long before she knew where it would take her, she was already creating (a pen and paintbrush often her favorite companions). But it wasn’t until years later that she discovered her true canvas: the art classroom. Now the owner of a vibrant art school on Main Street in Denville, Mary brings her passion full circle, inspiring others to tap into their own creativity.
“I always knew I was going to be an artist,” says Shadbolt, “I came out of the womb that way, creating and freelancing for decades, but the more I taught, the more I realized that teaching is what I need to complete me,” she recalled. “Art is an invaluable tool. No matter what people manufacture or design, it all begins with a drawing, from houses and cars, to fashion, and even storyboarding a movie. That’s how I relate my lessons to art career awareness.”
As a graduate of both Rowan University, in NJ and Moore’s College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, she earned her BFA in Illustration and Master’s in Art Education with K-12 Certification in Art Education. Shadbolt now works with a variety of students— age 7 through adult.
During the school year, enrollment typically hovers anywhere between 85 and 90, or even 120 students. Mary follows the
blueprint she developed while writing the art curriculum for the Paramus school district, where she taught art for several years, incorporating art techniques, art history, art demonstrations, and cross-curricular connections.
At the center of her teaching philosophy is DBAE, or Discipline Based Art Education—a standard in some public schools whereby art teachers work with all disciplines, including history, literature, and science, to tie in projects to the lessons taught there.
Today, students can enroll in a variety of courses, art workshops during the school year, and camps in the summer. Shadbolt keeps up with changes in art education by taking professional development classes, attending workshops, and staying in touch with other art teachers.
“THEY ARE LEARNING ABOUT THEMSELVES,
AROUND THEM, AS WELL AS THE CHILD (OR ADULT STUDENT) NEXT TO THEM.”
Shadbolt’s summer camps explore themed weeks with hands-on experience in drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, and more, offering an opportunity to explore a multitude of art techniques.
Some of the art school’s yearly courses include a five or 10-week adult drawing class, five or 10 week studio art class for age 11-18, a painting club for ages 8-14, and a 6-week studio art class for ages 7-11. All are offered September-June, and range from 60 to 90 minutes long.
According to Shadbolt, students aged seven through 11 are her largest population—which is wonderful as it’s around this age, she explains, that they start to truly grasp artistic concepts. “While all children
draw and paint at a young age, once students reach the age of 7, they understand more multi-step processes and they can make cross-curricular connections as well.”
“I like to meet my students where they are,” Shadbolt said. “Starting with providing them with a safe and welcoming environment. Students are to incorporate the materials and principles discussed, but are free to approach the assignment with their own personal style.”
“They are learning about themselves, the world around them, as well as the child (or adult student) next to them,” she added.
“My daughter loves taking classes with Mary,” said Rachel M. in a testimonial on Shadbolt’s website. “She really enjoys the projects and is very proud of her work. Mary is very encouraging of all the kids and is a great confidence booster.”
Shadbolt emphasizes that one of the keys to successful art education is helping
students appreciate the importance of the process, as well as the finished piece. Just as an athlete trains for a game and then showcases their skills on the field or court, students at her school understand that courses end with an exhibit of their work in an art show, which Shadbolt organizes throughout the year.
“It’s important for students to celebrate their successes and discuss their work using their new knowledge with friends and family. This experience is vital for growth in all of my students, age 7 through adult!” Shadbolt explained.
Her average class size is between 5 and 12 students so she can provide individualized instruction by monitoring
her students’ work and providing continuous feedback.
A newly added workshop pairs Shadbolt with an adult student who is also a retired special education teacher. Together, they’ll lead a class for students with special needs—a first for the school, and one she hopes will become a lasting addition to her offerings.”
“This is sort of a new incarnation for me,” Shadbolt says.
No other local studios, she says, offer a class for special needs students, so she sees it as filling that void.
“Students could come to this class with neurological issues, ASD, or perhaps they are non-verbal. Regardless, art should be available to all.”

From motherhood to milestones, Brooke Micoletti captures life in its most honest form.
Brooke Micoletti doesn’t just take photos—she captures the world through the eyes of her subjects, letting their stories unfold without a single word. With every click of the shutter, she transforms emotion, perspective, and personality into powerful visual narratives.
The mom of five-year-old twin girls and a one-year-old boy never set out to be a photographer, but her career as a high-risk sonographer—which she jokingly likened to ‘taking pictures of fetuses’—partially summoned her inner shutterbug. Motherhood and the pandemic took care of the rest.
“I always had a creative edge to me,” Micoletti revealed.
After welcoming her twin girls in 2020, she felt a natural pull to document the fleeting, once-in-a-lifetime moments of human development.
“Then COVID happened.and I really got into it,” she explained.
Micoletti further honed her skills through an online class, and of course by capturing moments in time from those closest to her.
With family and friends as her initial subjects, she was able to expand her client reach to the point of launching her official business: Brooke Micoletti Photography.
That was about a year and a half ago. Her now-complete online gallery stands as a
powerful reflection of her talent and growth.
A crying newborn. A cozy couple. A radiant young mother.
Her favorites?
“I love engagement shoots,” she said. “And kids are fun—wild but fun.”
The name of her game is candid as she aims to showcase her subjects in their natural states.
In addition to photographing people at play or in-love, Micoletti also hustles with branding shoots, headshots, and special events (including milestones and birthday parties).
“It really is crazy how clear and beautiful a camera can capture an image,” Micoletti added. “Phones are great, but the image quality is totally different than if you were to use a real camera.”
When she is not behind her camera or performing sonograms, she can be found spending time out and about with her family—always ready to capture the magic in the ordinary.
For Brooke Micoletti, photography isn’t just a passion or profession—it’s a way of seeing the world, one genuine, unscripted moment at a time.

AT BRAVO MUSIC ACADEMY, CHILDREN GROW INTO CONFIDENT MUSICIANS THROUGH CREATIVITY, CONNECTION, AND EXPRESSION.
Music isn’t just sound—it’s the heartbeat of childhood growth. Just ask Christie Seyfarth, owner of Bravo Music Academy.
Tucked right outside of the heart of downtown Denville, Bravo Music Academy has been nurturing young musicians since 2016. The academy welcomes students as young as age three, offering private and group lessons, as well as summer camps.
At the core of the academy’s approach is a belief in the power of music to shape young minds.
“When you make music, it engages multiple regions of the brain simultaneously,” says Seyfarth, affectionately known to students as Miss Christie. “It improves problem solving and strengthens neural connections in your brain while improving memory and retention.”
Beyond its educational benefits, music has the power to unite. “Music is a universal language and it brings us together in a way that nothing else can,” she added. “It’s important for developing well-rounded humans.”
“I LOVE TEACHING AND RUNNING THE BUSINESS AT THE SAME TIME,”
Raised in a musically gifted family in Hopatcong, Miss. Christie was surrounded by melodies from the start. Her father played guitar, her mother sang and played piano, and her brother strummed both the ukulele and guitar. She herself became fluent in piano and organ—and can “pick her way through a number of other instruments as well.”
Today, she channels both her passion for music and her entrepreneurial spirit into Bravo Music Academy, where she now leads a growing team of six instructors.
“I love teaching and running the business at the same time,” she revealed.
At Bravo Music Academy, learning is tailored for every stage of early development. Children under age five are offered a free trial lesson to assess readiness for regular weekly instruction.
The experience doesn’t stop there— monthly tuition goes beyond just lessons—it also includes method books, access to the academy’s music and game lending libraries, and opportunities to perform in concerts and recitals. A favorite among students are Bravo Bashes—90minute events the academy hosts a few times a year.
During Bravo Bashes, each student has the opportunity to perform a piece for the group in a relaxed, supportive setting—an approach that helps build confidence and provides a gentle performance experience.
“They’re part group lesson, part music party,” Miss. Christie explained. “Bravo Bashes are designed to support progress and help students stay excited about their learning, while also having a little fun along the way.”
Despite lessons being private, students are always encouraged to connect and create together. “If a student wants to do a duet, trio, or ensemble piece, we’ll work something out where they can get together and practice during lessons.”
Aspiring musicians can choose from private piano, guitar, ukulele, and voice lessons. In the summer, music camps for kids ages 3–11 offer an immersive experience, blending rhythm, melody, and movement through hands-on instrument play, singing, themed crafts, and interactive games.
In terms of what music the academy teaches, Miss. Christie proudly explained, “We cover it all. We have students who make requests and we have students who are just as happy going through a method book. We tailor [our teachings] to each student’s needs.”
And that’s not all. This fall, the academy is officially launching its modern pop kids’ choir, Glee Club, following a successful spring preview.
With a modern, all-inclusive curriculum, Glee Club helps young singers develop their voices through the songs they love—building their confidence to perform with both skill and joy. From beginner to advanced, the academy welcomes aspiring singers of all skill levels, even if this is a student’s first time singing.
Bravo Music Academy will also begin hosting one to two monthly homeschool workshops starting in September.
Whether a child dreams of center stage or simply wants to strum along for fun, Miss. Christie and her team at Bravo Music Academy are there every step of the way, turning music into a lifelong gift.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about creating musicians. It’s about nurturing bright, curious, and compassionate humans—one song at a time. For more information, visit bravomusicacademy.com.

THROW A PAWSOME BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR YOUR FURRY FRIEND
Create delightful DIY party favors for your dog guests by filling small bags or boxes with goodies. Include a tennis ball for playtime fun and a selection of treats for them to enjoy. You can also add a small toy or chew for variety. These favors ensure that every pup goes home happy and tired from all the play and treats.
Keep the human guests happy with a creative Treat Station for Owners. Use brand new, clean dog food bowls as serving dishes for snacks like chips, pretzels, and candies. Arrange the bowls on a table with a festive tablecloth and some dog-themed decorations. Label each bowl with fun names like “Puppy Chow” for trail mix or “Doggie Biscuits” for cookies.
A birthday party isn’t complete without a cake, even for dogs! To make a dog-friendly birthday cake, start with ingredients like peanut butter, bananas, and carrots. Mix 1 cup of flour, 1/4 cup of rolled oats, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and a pinch of cinnamon in one bowl. In another bowl, blend 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce, 1/4 cup of peanut butter, 1 mashed banana, and 1/2 cup of grated carrots. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, then pour the batter into a greased cake pan. Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes. Let it cool, then frost with a mixture of Greek yogurt and peanut butter. Decorate with dog treats and serve to your excited pup!
WHERE EVERY ANIMAL’S STORY MATTERS AND SECOND CHANCES BEGIN.
“Every animal that comes here has a story to tell.”
There was plenty of woofing and tweeting. There was probably some meowing, too.
Welcome to the Denville Animal Shelter. Here everyday has gone to the dogs—or the cats—and yes, even the birds.
Located in Building 9 in the Department of Public Works complex on Morris Avenue, the shelter tends to about 100 animals per year and is operated by the Denville Police Department.
“Every animal that comes here has a story to tell,” said Denville’s Animal Control Officer Meredith Petrillo.
Meet, Radar, for example. The bright green conure, was rescued during a storm in 2005, and landed an adoption by Denville’s finest. It lived at the police station until about 2020.
“He’s really very happy here,” Petrillo revealed. Radar also keeps good company with his chirpy sidekick, a Budgie named Buddy, who was rescued by a Good Samaritan who found him at Cook’s Pond.
As the birds continued to chirp, the shelter’s three resident puppies chimed in, eager for attention.
The 7-month-old cream and tan colored Anatolian Shepherds, who Petrillo refers to as “the ladies,” are “sweeter than sweet.” Their size to the tune of 120-160 pounds just comes with the territory of the breed.
“These are unique dogs,” she explained. “They’re working dogs from Turkey and were used to guard livestock against predators.”
Two of the pups, Diamond and Cici, recently gained celebrity status, courtesy of DJ Terrie Carr from WDHA, who featured them—along with Petrillo—on her regular Rock ’N Ruff segment.
On the feline front, the shelter is home to a few feral kittens still adjusting to the human touch, and Anastasia, a blue-eyed white rescue from South Carolina, who has been a semi-permanent resident for the past 11 years.
Cats are boarded in a separate room away from the fray of their canine and avian counterparts.
As of press time, the shelter was home to eight cats, the oldest a whopping 18-years and named Neo.
In addition to housing animals, the shelter also serves as a lost and found of sorts. Its Facebook page, Friends of the Denville Animal Shelter, has led to reunions of lost pets with their equally as lost owners.
Over the years, Petrillo has encountered her fair share of unusual guests including snakes, reptiles, pigs, and even a goat, who was en route to greener pastures.
What sets Denville apart is the all paws on deck contributions made on behalf of the the community. Local veterinarians provide spaying and neutering services and up-to-date vaccinations. Plus, the shelter also coordinates with other animal welfare organizations in neighboring towns.
Thanks to fundraising efforts such as the “Dogs Gone Wild” splash bash at Cook’s Pond and lemonade stands furnished by the business-savvy students at Riverview Elementary School, the shelter is able to provide adoptions free of charge.
“One of the benefits is that this town is awesome in supporting projects,” she said. “It’s one of the reasons I don’t want to retire. It’s such a supportive community.”
For more information on adoptions, contact Meredith at 973-983-7538, mpetrillo@denvillepolice.org, or check out the Denville Animal Shelter on Facebook.
