ARTS + CULTURE OCEAN CENTER - FLAVOR FORWARD REINVENTION
MEN'S ISSUE
As June unfolds and summer officially arrives, we turn the spotlight to the men and fathers who inspire, uplift, and lead in both quiet and powerful ways. This month’s issue is dedicated to them—the dads, brothers, mentors, friends, and role models who show up with heart and purpose.
We’re thrilled to feature Keanu Reeves on our cover. Best known for his iconic roles on screen, Keanu is also making waves off-screen with Arch Racing, his high-performance motorcycle team, which recently took part in the excitement at the Daytona International Speedway. His passion, humility, and drive reflect the kind of leadership we celebrate this month.
Our local stories are just as inspiring. We spotlight Chris Rodhe of Surf’s Up Computing, who’s built a reputation for treating every client like family. We also highlight the Ocean Center’s incredible $40 million reinvestment—an effort that will bring even more world-class events to locals and visitors alike. And if you're dreaming of travel, don’t miss our feature on a Golf Getaway to Ireland—a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.
In a place like Daytona, where our community is enriched by both long-time residents and visitors from around the world, diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Our area thrives on a wide variety of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. With that comes the responsibility to speak thoughtfully and listen with open minds. Respecting differing viewpoints is not only a sign of strength— it’s the foundation of a vibrant, evolving community.

Where Championship Golf Meets Irish Heritage: The K Club, Adare Manor & Dromoland Castle
Ireland’s lush landscapes and storied castles have long drawn travelers, but the Emerald Isle offers something truly special for golf enthusiasts. On a recent journey, I had the pleasure of visiting three of Ireland’s most celebrated golf resorts: The K Club, Adare Manor, and Dromoland Castle. Each offers a unique blend of world-class golf and fivestar hospitality, making them must-visit destinations for any golfer.
The K Club, just a short drive from Dublin, is synonymous with championship golf. Home to two stunning courses, the Palmer North and Palmer South, The K Club has hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006—the first and only time the event has been held in Ireland—as well as 13 European Opens from 1995 to 2007. Looking ahead, it will welcome the Amgen Irish Open from September 4–7, 2025, and again in 2027, further cementing its legacy as a premier tournament venue.
Adare Manor, set in the heart of County Limerick, is preparing for its moment in the spotlight as the host of the 2027 Ryder Cup. The resort has previously hosted the Irish Open in 2007 and 2008, and the prestigious J.P. McManus Pro-Am in 2005, 2010, and 2022. I was fortunate to tour the course with one of the resident Golf Pros, who detailed the extensive upgrades underway to meet Ryder Cup standards, including a Tom Fazio redesign and state-of-the-art course enhancements.
Dromoland Castle, near Shannon Airport, offers a bewitching parkland course set on a 450-acre estate. The course has hosted the Whyte and Mackay Pro Celebrity Golf Tournament and, more recently, the KPMG Women’s Irish Open in 2022, following a €2 million upgrade. The championship course, designed by Ron Kirby and JB Carr, is challenging and scenic, with ancient trees, rolling hills, and top-tier practice facilities.
These resorts are not just for golfers—they are gateways to Ireland’s rich culture, history, and natural beauty. Whether chasing birdies or simply soaking in the scenery, The K Club, Adare Manor, and Dromoland Castle deliver the quintessential Irish experience, both on and off the course.

WHERE HIGH-PERFORMANCE CUSTOM COMPUTERS MEET HEART, CREATIVITY, AND REAL COMMUNITY CONNECTION
It’s not every day that you walk into a computer shop and hear a story about a sixth-grader turned IT trailblazer. But Surf’s Up Computing isn’t just any computer shop, and Chris isn’t your average IT guy. He has created something refreshingly different—an approach-
which now sit like art pieces in their lobby. “The computer becomes part of the aesthetic, not just a machine tucked in the corner.”
That attention to detail is what draws in creatives, professional gamers, entrepreneurs, local profes-

able, custom-first computer business in the heart of our community, where design, function, and genuine customer care come standard.
Yes, you can get your hard drive fixed. But you might also leave with a custom-lit, engraved, uniquely built machine. You may even find yourself lingering to hear how he helped a grandfather from England find the perfect gift for his grandson. It’s that kind of place.
“We’re not comparing apples to apples when it comes to what we build versus what’s sold in big-box stores,” Chris explains. His machines are three to five times the speed of the average computer from the average store. “The performance difference is massive.”
Chris’s shop is a hidden gem for those who value high-end performance and personalization. His builds are functional showpieces—custom computers that double as decor. For one local business, he designed computers that matched the furniture
sionals and snowbirds. Helping to set up your software like Quickbooks and taking in old computers and accessories are on the long list of services he provides for his customers, whom he treats like his own family.
Originally from Wisconsin, he worked for more than two decades as a reference librarian and IT department head. He moved to Florida in 2012 after realizing he was spending more time here than back home. “It was supposed to be temporary,” he laughs. “I came down for vacation, handed out my resume and got six job offers. “Sometimes, it’s about showing up. Letting people see who you really are.”
Surf’s Up Computing is gearing up for a big milestone, the 10th anniversary of the business. “We average about 15-20% growth per year,” Chris shares proudly. With incredible growth like that, it’s not a stretch for him to have future plans to expand to build a separate assembly facility.
That personal connection is the beating heart of Surf’s Up Computing. It’s why Chris offers free diagnostic services. It’s why he teaches free cybersecurity classes at senior communities. It’s why clients trust him with their data, their machines, and their stories. “Your customers are not numbers, they are actual people.”
The business officially launched in 2015, when instead of working for others, Chris decided to start his own company. “I thought if I’m going to work hard, I might as well build something I believe in.” Build he did. Today, Surf’s Up Computing offers full-service custom builds, on-site service contracts for businesses, and one-of-a-kind designs tailored to each client. From high-end gamers to small businesses wanting sleek, branded setups, there’s no off-the-shelf solution here. If you can dream it, Chris can probably build it.
One of his favorite projects? “We had a customer—she loved pink. Pink everything. We custom-engraved the Pink Panther on her case, installed lights in every shade of pink imaginable, even gave her interchangeable panels so she could change the look of her computer every week. That’s not something you’re going to get at a chain store.”
“YOUR CUSTOMERS AREN’T NUMBERS, THEY ARE ACTUAL PEOPLE.”
But behind the specs and circuit boards, the real magic is Chris himself—a down-to-earth, kind, endlessly curious man who wants people to feel confident about technology. “If you leave here with a better understanding of how to stay safe online, or just feel like someone actually listened to what you wanted—that’s a win.”
When asked about the future of AI and tech trends, he stays measured. “It’s only as good as what it learns from. If the programming is poor, the results will be, too.” According to Chris, engagement and human decisions are still necessary and important in the business of computing.
Chris isn’t about chasing tech headlines—he’s building relationships. He believes in showing up, doing good work, and letting word of mouth do the rest. Based on the success of his business, this grassroots approach still works, resulting in an honestly-built and reputable business.
From a sixth-grade computer whiz in Wisconsin to a trusted name in custom computing, Chris’s story is less about machines—and more about people. And that, perhaps, is the real power behind Surf’s Up Computing.
ARCH MOTORCYCLE DEBUTS AT SUPER HOOLIGAN WITH IMPRESSIVE TOP-10 FINISH
When it comes to motorsports, Daytona Beach reigns supreme as a global epicenter for high-speed excitement. The city’s deep-rooted history in racing culture is evident in its packed calendar of adrenaline-fueled events, including Bike Week, Biketoberfest, the Rolex 24, Daytona 500, and the Coca-Cola 400. These iconic gatherings draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors—from die-hard racing fans and

thrill-seekers to celebrities and industry leaders—cementing Daytona’s reputation as a premier destination for motorsports enthusiasts from around the world.
Among these globally recognized events, the MotoAmerica races during Bike Week hold a unique and celebrated place. At the center of the action is the legendary Daytona 200, a 200-mile motorcycle race that marked its 83rd running this year. The Bike Week lineup also includes a variety of high-octane competitions, such as the Mission King of the Baggers Championship, the SC-Project Twins Cup Championship, and the Mission Super Hooligan National Championship. These races showcase a
diverse range of motorcycles and riding styles, adding even more excitement to an already electrifying event.
This year, a fresh and unexpected contender entered the Super Hooligan lineup: Arch Racing, a newly formed team created by actor and motorcycle enthusiast Keanu Reeves and his longtime business partner, Gard Hollinger. Arch Racing is an extension of Arch Motorcycle, the boutique motorcycle company the duo co-founded in 2011. Known for building powerful, custom-designed cruisers such as the KRGT-1, 1s, and Method 143, Arch has earned widespread respect for its innovation, craftsmanship, and attention to performance.
“ARCH RACING’S DEBUT PROVES PASSION AND PRECISION BELONG ON THE RACETRACK.”
What sets Arch Motorcycle apart is its highly personalized, bespoke approach. Instead of mass-producing models, Arch offers a collaborative design and build process, crafting each motorcycle to fit the exact specifications and preferences of the owner. Customers work directly with in-house designers to customize ergonomics, finish, and functionality. Inspired by Porsche’s design philosophy, Reeves and Hollinger emphasize clean lines, mechanical purity, and rider-focused engineering.
After a decade of refining their machines for the road, entering the world of competitive racing felt like a natural next step.
The Super Hooligan class—designed for modified street bikes that balance power and agility—offered the ideal proving ground for Arch to test its performance ethos on the track. To lead their competitive debut, Arch Racing signed Corey Alexander, the accomplished 2022 Stock 1000 Champion, as their rider.
Arch Racing made its official debut at the 2025 Mission Super Hooligan National Championship, at the Daytona International Speedway. Their goal for their first race weekend was both realistic and aspirational: achieve a top-10 finish. The weekend began with a significant hurdle. During Friday’s race, the #23 Arch bike
suffered a critical mechanical failure—a broken mainshaft—which forced Alexander to withdraw from the race. Undeterred, the team quickly sourced parts, made the necessary repairs, and prepared the bike for the next day’s contest.
On Saturday, Alexander started in ninth position and quickly advanced to seventh. While the top six riders created a gap, Alexander became locked in an intense battle with Hayden Schultz. The two traded positions throughout the race, maintaining a fierce pace and pulling away from the rest of the field. Ultimately, Alexander held on to secure a strong seventh-place finish—exceeding expectations and delivering a promising debut for the team.
While Arch Motorcycles may not yet be a common sight on the streets of Daytona, their performance at the Super Hooligan Championship hints at an exciting future. As Arch continues to evolve in the world of motorsports, motorcycle enthusiasts and fans alike will be watching closely.
Congratulations to Keanu Reeves, Gard Hollinger, Corey Alexander, and the entire Arch Racing team. Their passion, resilience, and innovation made for an unforgettable debut—and a thrilling preview of what lies ahead.
BEHIND THE OCEAN CENTER’S FLAVOR-FORWARD REINVENTION
A quarterly meeting becomes a culinary event. A local launch party turns into an unforgettable evening. At the new Ocean Center, hosting a business gathering no longer means choosing between style and substance. Thanks to a bold culinary upgrade and flexible new spaces, the venue now offers elevated catering and amenities that make it easier—and tastier—for local companies to gather, celebrate, and grow right in their own backyard.
From freshly baked bread to sleek LED lighting and thoughtfully designed meeting spaces, the Ocean Center has transformed into more than just an events venue—it’s a fully equipped stage for local businesses to shine.
The scent of warm sourdough now drifts through the concourse. Spotlights gleam off a newly finished basketball court. Sizzling local fare replaces standard stadium snacks, and a cold craft beer brewed just down the road is never more than a few steps away. This isn’t the Ocean Center of decades past—it’s a reimagined experience, one where every detail, from lighting to lunch, reflects the heart of Daytona Beach.
As the Ocean Center celebrates its 40th anniversary, the beloved venue isn’t just marking a milestone—it’s

undergoing a renaissance. With a $40 million reinvestment aimed squarely at the local community, the transformation is about more than polished amenities. It’s about crafting memorable experiences, building hometown pride, and creating a cultural hub that feels as fresh and dynamic as the city it serves.
From food to fanfare, this reinvention is local, bold, and undeniably flavorful.
At the heart of the transformation is a deep commitment to local partnerships. Food and beverage service is no longer an afterthought—it’s the headliner. Under the direction of Food Service General Manager Matt Dye, the Ocean Center is redefining event cuisine with a bold new approach that’s fresh, unexpected, and vibrantly local.
“We’re featuring three new Daytonabased businesses,” Dye says. “This is about building partnerships that reflect the community while offering sustainable, elevated dining for our guests.”
experience, and making the Ocean Center an even more memorable experience for our guests.”
Gone are the days when event food meant Dippin’ Dots and concession-stand nachos. The Ocean Center’s new culinary program includes rotating chef features, curated concession menus, and locally inspired recipes that turn even a courtside snack into something worth talking about.
“If you attended the State of the County, you know what I mean,” says County Council Chairman Jeff Brower. “That meal was incredible. I’ve been to conventions all over the U.S., and I don’t know that I’ve ever had a meal that good.”
“We’re not just serving food— we’re setting the table for connection, celebration, and community pride,” says Dye.
Among those featured: Sorrento’s Bakery, which provides all of the bread—fresh-baked daily; Ormond Brewing Company, whose craft beers add a local twist to every pour; and Copper Bottom Rum, supplying Florida-distilled spirits that elevate the cocktail menu. Local beverage distributors Daytona Beverages and S.R. Perrott ensure smooth operations and hometown reliability behind the scenes.
“We’re introducing exciting new flavor pairings and culinary techniques that push the boundaries of our previous offerings,” Dye adds. “In addition to focusing on taste, we’re elevating the visual presentation of each dish, enhancing the overall dining
This bold culinary shift reflects more than elevated taste—it’s a symbol of the venue’s broader vision: to make every moment, and every bite, feel exceptional.
The Ocean Center’s transformation isn’t just about amenities—it’s about intention. The $40 million capital improvement plan touches every corner of the venue, from newly installed arena seating with built-in cup holders to advanced LED lighting, upgraded meeting spaces, and a gleaming new basketball court. But what makes it special is how deeply it’s tied to the community it serves.
“My family used to vacation here when I was a little girl,” recalls Director Lynn Flanders. “I watched this building being built. It was beautiful then, and it’s beautiful now. What we’re doing today is about honoring that legacy—and creating something unforgettable for future generations.”
County Council Vice Chair Matt Reinhart agrees. “There was an indoor rodeo,” he recalls of his first
visit to the venue. “It was the moment I fell in love with this place. That was over 30 years ago. And now, seeing it evolve like this—it’s something special.”
The numbers tell a compelling story: In 2024 alone, the Ocean Center hosted 118 events, welcomed over 500,000 attendees, and generated an estimated $114 million in regional economic impact. But perhaps the more lasting effect is emotional—rekindling a sense of local ownership and pride.
As part of the 40th anniversary celebration, the Ocean Center is launching an ambitious new initiative: Four for 40—a commitment to hosting four major concerts this year, re-establishing the venue as a must-stop destination on Florida’s entertainment map.
“We’d like four for 40,” Flanders says with a confident smile. “It’s more than a slogan—it’s a declaration of intent.”
It’s a revival that nods to the past— when Tom Petty rocked the stage and a rising Britney Spears lit up the crowd— and boldly looks toward the future.
Whether it’s a sold-out concert, a local business conference, or a family cheering on a basketball tournament, every event at the new Ocean Center feels like a hometown celebration.
“It’s not just about the building,” Reinhart says. “It’s about the memories we make inside it.”
With bold flavors, major headliners, and a community-first approach, the Ocean Center’s 40th year is shaping up to be more than a milestone—it’s a movement. And if the first four decades were about establishing presence, this next chapter is about raising the bar.
Forty years. Four concerts. Endless possibilities—served fresh daily.
USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.
A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.
SOMETHING SWEET
This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.
SOMETHING TANGY
Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.
SOMETHING SPICY
This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.
SOMETHING LIQUID
It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.
SOMETHING TOMATO
You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
THE SPICE COMBINATION
This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.
• 2 cups ketchup
• 1 cup water
• 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
• 5 tablespoons brown sugar
• 5 tablespoons sugar
• 1/2 tablespoon black pepper
• 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
• 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.
