This issue holds a special place in my heart. Children are more than just the future—they are the heartbeat of our communities today. Their laughter, their curiosity, and their potential shape the world in ways we can’t fully measure.
As parents and caregivers, we put so much effort into nurturing their growth, teaching them, and investing in their futures. But let’s not forget that children also shape us—they bring joy, laughter, and meaning to our everyday lives.
But we also cannot overlook the powerful role pets play in our families. They offer unconditional love and teach us valuable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and companionship. The bond between kids and their pets can be transformative, fostering deep emotional connections that last a lifetime.
At the core of both children and pets is a simple truth—they need us. Our care and attention shape who they become, and in turn, they shape us. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the kids and pets who fill our homes with joy and love.
I hope this month’s issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life. They are the ones who remind us of the simple joys and the importance of unconditional love.
Here’s to our future, our little ones, and the pets who make everything better. Cheers!
As always, you can pick up copies of the magazine at the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce, Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce and MOAS.

When storms strike, they do more than damage homes and flood streets. They separate pets from the people who love them. For those who have experienced Florida’s hurricane seasons, the images stay with you—dogs behind fences, cats carried to safety by strangers, families searching in the aftermath. Halifax Humane Society is determined to change that.
This year, in a first-of-its-kind partnership with Petco Love Lost, the organization launched a countywide, AI-powered pet reunification program to get lost pets home faster, often before they ever enter an animal facility.
“This three-minute action could literally save your pet’s life before they ever enter a shelter,” said Sean Hawkins, CEO of Halifax Humane Society.
The platform uses facial recognition software to match photos of missing pets with those found or brought into shelters. Pet owners upload a headshot of their pet to PetcoLoveLost.org with contact info. If the pet goes missing, a finder can upload a photo and the system scans for matches across a national network of 3,000 shelters.
“Overall last year, 62 percent of the animals entering our shelter were strays,” said Hawkins. “And so, you know, the vast majority of pets who end up in our shelter arrived without an owner.”
Many were not surrendered or brought in by someone who found them. They came alone—no tags, no microchips, no one searching. Of those, only seven percent were returned to families.
“That’s a pretty dismal statistic,” Hawkins said.
He explained that many pet owners don’t realize their animal is missing or don’t know where to start. Lost pets often go unclaimed. This system, he emphasized, is designed to close that gap—faster, easier, without delay.
Unlike microchips, which require scanners and often lack current info, Petco Love Lost is free, simple, and works from any smartphone. Halifax Humane Society automatically uploads every animal they intake. But the key to success lies with the public.
“Every pet in Volusia County should be registered in this free system before a storm hits,” Hawkins said. “The more pets we have
in the database, the more reunifications we can make happen right in the community without pets ever needing to come to the shelter.”
“Petco Love Lost is being used successfully in thousands of cities across the country,” said Gina Knepp, National Program Manager for Petco Love Lost. “But Volusia County stands out as the very first countywide, coordinated deployment effort. That’s powerful.”
That distinction makes Volusia the only county in the United States to implement this AI-powered technology at a county level. Other deployments have been limited to cities, but this is the first time an entire county is working together to create a centralized system for pet reunification.
“Many of the animals entering shelters are not homeless. They are simply lost. They have names and families who love them,” said Knepp. “This technology helps us meet families where they are and get those pets home.”
Halifax Humane Society is encouraging families to turn pet preparedness into a team effort and let kids take the lead.
“We would love to see kids build their own hurricane readiness kits for the family pet,” said Hawkins. “It is a great way to empower them while helping keep pets safe.”
• Three days of food and bottled water
• Medications in labeled bags
• Digital copies of vet records and ID photos
• Collar with ID tag and leash
• Travel carrier or crate
• Litter box, trash bags, cleaning supplies
• Favorite toys or bedding
• A photo of you with your pet
• Upload your pet’s photo at PetcoLoveLost.org
Halifax Humane Society is planning events to promote the tool, including microchip scanning and registration drives. Community members can sign up to volunteer on the website.
“We want to be out there where the community is,” said Hawkins. “The more people who hear about this tool and register their pets, the fewer we will need to shelter.”
Local event hosts can invite Halifax Humane Society to participate in educational pop-ups or outreach efforts, including Petco Love Lost registration drives and awareness booths.
Halifax Humane Society’s annual FurBall fundraising gala is scheduled for December 4. A kickoff party will be held Thursday, September 4, at Art Spotlight.
“These events help support the shelter, but more importantly, they help us tell these stories,” Hawkins said.
As hurricane season intensifies, the call to action remains simple.
“Register your pet now. Talk about it with neighbors. Add it to your back-to-school checklist,” said Hawkins. “It only takes three minutes, but it could change everything.”
“THIS THREEMINUTE ACTION COULD LITERALLY SAVE YOUR PET’S LIFE BEFORE THEY EVER ENTER A SHELTER,”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHE HANCKOWIAK THE SHINDERS ARE TURNING MOSQUITO CONTROL INTO PEACE OF MIND.
In Volusia County, outdoor living is a way of life. One local family is quietly transforming backyards into safer spaces for kids, pets, and peaceful evenings. Lisa and Patrick Shinder, along with their daughter Audrey, own Mosquito & Pest Authority of Volusia County. Their service blends science, family values, and meticulous care to protect what matters most: children, pets, and the peace of being outdoors.
“We’re helping our fellow neighbor, focusing on that piece of us that’s always been about making sure everybody has a wonderful quality of life,” Lisa said.
In Florida’s subtropical climate, mosquito control is about more than comfort. Some species, like the Black Salt Marsh Mosquito, can transmit heartworms to pets. “I don’t think people realize that we are surrounded by mosquitoes that might seem harmless,” Lisa said. “But sometimes, they’re a vector for viruses or heartworms.”
The Shinders use a two-step approach targeting both larvae and adult mosquitoes. “We go around and look at two parts of the life cycle,” Patrick said. “We treat the larvae with something called mosquito bits so they never grow into adults. Then we spray for the adult phase, focusing on the perimeter and anywhere with plants and trees.”
This process, combined with a carefully timed 21-day treatment schedule, aligns with the mosquito’s life cycle. Many companies treat every 30 days, but the Shinders say that allows new mosquitoes to emerge. Their timing keeps protection uninterrupted and results much more consistent.
Their plant-based spray is safe for animals, though they avoid vegetable gardens and blooming flowers. “We don’t want to kill bees,” Patrick added.
They also check for standing water—gutters, planters, even bottle caps. “It doesn’t take a lot of water for mosquitoes to lay their eggs and breed,” Patrick said.
The Shinders offer all-natural options for sensitive areas like boat docks, plus event sprays for outdoor weddings and gatherings. “If you’re getting married or having a big family reunion, we’ll come the day before or the morning of to make sure it’s perfect,” Lisa said.
This is what local, personal service looks like.
“I want everybody to be able to go outside, enjoy life, and feel safe.”
Audrey, who recently graduated high school, helps with emails, scheduling, and site visits. Their dogs, Holly and Chip, are daily reminders that a pest-free yard means peace, comfort and safety for the whole family.
“Florida living should mean cookouts, barefoot kids and dogs playing in the grass,” Lisa said. “Not swatting at bugs.”

fresh approach to learning that meets kids where they are and moves them forward.
nes, Jaclyn guides both
For many homeschool families in Volusia County, finding a learning environment that supports both parent and child can feel like a missing piece. That’s what inspired Jaclyn Veloce to create Academic Oasis—a supplemental learning academy for K–6 students rooted in hands-on, project-based instruction that enriches the homeschool journey.
“We’re not a school. We’re a supplemental learning academy,” Jaclyn says. “Parents are the primary educators; we’re here to support their vision, not replace it.”
After more than two decades in the public school system, Jaclyn began tutoring students one-on-one. She envisioned a small, flexible center—but the families she worked with had bigger ideas. “They basically convinced me to do what I’m doing,” she says.
The result is a space shaped by parent feedback. “Everything in my calendar—they created that,” Jaclyn explains. The daily rhythm reflects what homeschool families asked for: a fresh, creative setting where their children could thrive beyond the kitchen table.
At Academic Oasis, students incubate chicks, build butterfly gardens, and explore through tactile lessons. From pine cone turkeys
to seasonal crafts, the curriculum brings back meaningful traditions in ways that resonate today. At the same time, Jaclyn incorporates modern tools like IXL, which provides students with real-time insight into their progress and struggles. “We individualize for each student,” she says.
Every family begins with a one-on-one consultation. Jaclyn meets with parents to understand their child’s history, needs, and learning style before pairing them with the right tutor. “I sit down and talk to parents, ask them what’s going on, and then explain how I can help,” she says.
The curriculum follows project-based learning and clear rubrics instead of textbooks or high-stakes tests. It’s designed for
students who don’t fit the mold. “Even though he was a fourth grader, he was doing nothing on a fourth grade level,” she says of one student. “We meet the child where they’re at.”
That’s what draws so many families in: a model that prioritizes the child, not the system. “We’ve never changed the model of public school in over 100 years,” Jaclyn says. “Obviously it’s time for a change.”
This winter, Academic Oasis will open a new facility with a virtual reality-powered classroom, offering immersive lessons guided by live teachers. Students will learn on Mars, under the Eiffel Tower, and beyond—proving what’s possible when a child is truly seen, supported, and allowed to shine.
Looking for flexible, engaging, and high-quality education options for your child? At Academic Oasis, we meet students where they are—whether they’re just starting their learning journey or preparing for high school success. Whether you’re homeschooling, supplementing, or accelerating, we’re here to support your child’s academic journey.

A LOCAL ORGANIZATION PROVES THAT CONNECTION, CURIOSITY, AND COMPASSION ARE THE TRUE CORNERSTONES OF EARLY EDUCATION.
Before a child learns to speak, their brain is forming. That intricate inner wiring is shaped by interaction, care, and connection. For DJ Lebo, CEO of the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler
a child’s brain is built strictly through interactions with care and adults,” Lebo explains. “And if we don’t do our job, it’s much harder for them as they grow up.”
& Volusia, this foundational truth guides her work every day.
“We’re really trying to change that mindset,” she says. “So many people think education starts at kindergarten. But learning clearly starts at birth.”
The Coalition’s mission is simple in language but vast in reach: help families from the very beginning. They provide childcare assistance, developmental screenings, and a mobile classroom—grounded in the belief that early investment shapes long-term success for children and families alike.
By the time a child enters kindergarten, up to 90 percent of their brain has developed. This growth isn’t fueled by curriculum, but by relationships. A warm gaze, a shared book, a conversation—these moments strengthen neural pathways and lay the foundation for all future learning.
“It really is critical for families, for grandparents, for anyone to realize that
The Coalition supports this through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which mails free, age-appropriate books to children each month. The goal isn’t just to build a bookshelf—it’s to build a bond and a love of learning that lasts.
“We want them to share the book,” says Lebo. What matters is the interaction—pointing at pictures, telling stories, and responding to curiosity.
Even storytime becomes brain-building through “serve and return,” a back-and-forth where adult and child trade sounds and words. This rhythm supports language, attention, and emotional growth.
The Learning Mobile, a colorful RV turned classroom, travels throughout Volusia and Flagler counties. It visits parks, community centers, and neighborhoods, bringing hands-on learning and screenings directly to families who need them most.
“We’ll also do the Storybook Villages where we’re trying to really raise

awareness for the importance of literacy,” says Lebo.
Storybook Village is one of the Coalition’s most beloved events. It features characters, themed activities, and valuable resources—offering fun while raising funds for early literacy programs and community support efforts.
The Coalition supports providers who focus on play, outdoor learning, and discovery. The goal is to nurture curiosity, not enforce scripts.
“Young children learn through play,” Lebo says. “They learn through creativity. And they learn through just that imagination.”
Imaginative kids are often seen as unusual, she adds, when they’ve simply kept the wonder we all had.
In classrooms, educators follow curiosity—not just a checklist. The result is deeper learning and joyful exploration.
In a world full of parenting pressure, the Coalition stays rooted in love. Children thrive when they feel safe and supported. That starts early and requires consistent care.
“So I think the first thing is: kids love their parents,” Lebo says. “Almost anything else you can figure out.”
From toddler meltdowns to family crises, the Coalition meets families where they are. “We work with Easterseals, the domestic violence shelter, DCF, all of those folks,” she says.
Their programs offer more than services. They build trust and resilience. When families feel supported, they show up with patience, confidence, and love.
The first five years don’t just shape a child. They shape the future.
This is more than a role; it’s a platform for purpose. City Lifestyle publishers step into something bigger: the freedom to lead, the fulfillment of impact, and the pride of building something that matters. The opportunity to lead with meaning is calling. Could your next chapter begin here?
