For the Love of Kids and Pets

I’ve been looking forward to our Kids & Pets issue all year!  I suppose because both bring us comfort, joy and teach us so much about ourselves.

Children give us hope for a brighter tomorrow.  They are the future.  Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment.

And the special kind of companionship a pet offers can be a transformative experience for those in their world.  Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.

I’ll never forget our first dog while I was growing up.  Peanuts, a little Yorkshire Terrier, provided hours of laughter for our family as he would run full speed through our house, chasing a ball we had thrown. While we always hoped he would get the ball, more times than not he didn’t secure it before crashing himself into the wall.  He taught my brothers and me responsibility, friendship, and unconditional love.  He also taught us that owning a pet provides a wide range of emotions.

Both children and pets turn to us, the adults, for support and livelihood. Our care, attention, and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. The responsibility is immense, but so, too, are the rewards.  We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.

In loving memory of Shakespeare, the UPS Store greeter with the gentle spirit

Our Coworker is a Dog!

From boosting morale to offering endless cuddles and comfort, these adorable office mates have become an integral part of the workplace. Let’s celebrate these four-legged friends who bring smiles and a whole lot of love to the daily grind.  Discover why having a furry friend in the office is pawsitively wonderful!

George, MaltiPoo (Maltese and Poodle), Age 8

Since Abalabix books opened to the public in October 2021, George has been going to work with his owner.  Known for his variety of bow ties, George is the epitome of a lap dog.  While this sweet and gentle soul prefers cuddles over being chased, he LOVES kids and is happy to help parents teach their kids that not all dogs are scary.  He has been known to comfort grief-stricken people, such as one woman whose daughter brought her to Abalabix shortly after her husband died. George sat in the older woman’s lap, bringing to her face a smile that hadn’t been there in quite some time.

Read a book with George at Abalabix Books, Downtown Crystal Lake

Rookie, Golden Retriever, Age 4

When the owner of Smith Physical Therapy considered adding a therapy dog to her staff, she sought out a breeder and met Rookie -  independent, playful yet laid back, and compassionate. Rookie loves to play tug-of-war, hide and seek, and all treats (especially ice cubes, watermelon and strawberries), and prefers walking or running through town over a car ride.  He greets each patient with a tail wag and senses when someone may need a little extra attention; such as when he laid his head in the lap of one patient who was crying in pain and calmed her down for the rest of her session.

Dottie, Pointer/American Staffordshire Terrier, Age 8

When her owner, the office manager at Black Diamond, brought Dottie in for a quick visit two years ago, she made such an impression on the company’s owner and staff, she was “hired”.  Now she has a spot under everyone’s desk for a nap after one of her “zoomies” around the office.  This sweet and silly girl gets along with everyone.  She is SO loved, that she was the guest of honor at last year’s company holiday party where she arrived in her festive sweater and made her way to excitedly greet each employee in the room. A testament of mutual love and respect.

Bailey Lin, Goldendoodle, Age 6

From the age of six weeks, Bailey has been going to work at FASTSIGNS with the owners, and has established herself as the greeter.  From the UPS driver (whom she loves) to the steady flow of customers toting treats, she makes her way to meet them at the door for a pet and a scratch. Her parents and co-workers describe her as loving, smart and sweet.  While she enjoys going to work and steady activity, she is, ironically, not a fan of big signs.  She prefers to interact with visitors, leaning her weight into them for a big, Goldendoodle hug.

Roy Kent, Beagle, Age 1

Roy has been a fixture at Pucci Law since he was 8 weeks old.  A pampered pooch, he has his own built-in crate, toy box, and food and water bowls.  He loves car and shopping cart rides and attending his human brothers’ hockey games. He’ll carry his own leash on a walk.   He buries his favorite bones, even indoors in places like the couch, but if he sees you notice them…he’s on a mission to find a new spot.  It is always a good laugh when he “buries” ice cubes and wonders where they went when he goes back to dig them up.

Grimlen, Pitbull/Retriever mix, Age, 3

One day, 2 years ago, The Break Teen Center’s building and member-engagement manager brought Grimlen in for a visit.  He has been a staple since.  Grim, a bundle of joy and a lover of humans and animals, can be high energy, but he can also read the room and find his restraint so others are comfortable.  He loves to be outdoors hiking, meeting friends, or at the beach.  Hot dogs and Frosty Paws are his (not so) guilty pleasures, but his practical side refuses to eat his kibbles without a healthy dose of salmon oil on top.  Grim knows what he likes!

Stella, Pure Bred Boxer, Age 6

When the owner of Gallant Construction took over the company in 2020, Stella began coming with him to work.  Nicknamed ‘Chief Happiness’ because of the positive effect she has on everyone who meets her, Stella is sweet, friendly and gets along well with other dogs as well as humans.  A thoughtful and emotionally intelligent co-worker, she is hyper-aware of others’ feelings and leans into them for a hug but also gives space when she senses someone needs that.  Stella dislikes cold weather and missing a day of work but cannot get enough meat and cheese, ice cubes and walks with friends.

Meet Stella at Gallant Construction Co. in Crystal Lake

Trudy, French Bulldog, Age 7

As a member of the Reprographics team, Trudy takes her job (watching her co-workers work) very seriously.  She is the boss and happily lets you know it while maintaining a watchful eye over the staff, keeping everyone on task.  Not a fan of dogs bigger than her or small children (some were too rough with her in the past), this quirky pup keeps her distance when uncomfortable but will show you her soft side if you happen to have a treat in your pocket. Most days Trudy alternates between chasing her tennis ball down the aisles or napping on the job.

Vinnie, Yellow Lab mix, Age 13

Habitat for Humanity’s Event and Marketing Coordinator started as a volunteer, bringing Vinnie to the build sites. So, it was natural that both became official coworkers. Vinnie loves all people, while he’s more selective around other dogs. He has an uncanny ability to sense when someone is grieving and offers his support.  He is food-motivated and never turns down a cookie (or someone’s lunch if they leave it unattended). An expert napper and sun lounger, he enjoys laying in the grass and rolling in the snow. While not a ball retriever, he WILL forget all his training when he sees a chipmunk or squirrel.

CONSCIOUS CONSIDERATION

How coaching, assessment, and advocacy can help our kids navigate their path ahead

Today’s teenagers are navigating a complex landscape of rigorous academic demands, social expectations, and the daunting task of planning their future careers. The pressure to have everything figured out at a young age can be overwhelming, leading to stress and uncertainty.

“Everyone has a superpower, they just need to learn how to lean into them.” - Jackie Postelnick

Determining interests, passions and abilities, and which to pursue as a career and which to keep as a hobby or outlet, can be overwhelming.  Having a trusted advocate to help navigate these hurdles can make all the difference.  Jackie Postelnick, owner of Conscious College Planning, understands these challenges all too well.

With a deep commitment to guiding students through their most formative years, she has dedicated her career to helping young people traverse the often overwhelming journey of choosing the right college and career path. Her coaching process also helps the students take a personal inventory and discern their talents worth pursuing as a career vs a hobby/outlet. Jackie’s approach is rooted in empathy, expertise, and personal experience. She understands that young people need support in honing in on their natural abilities.

As an ambitious and tenacious teenager, Jackie, like many teens, lacked direction. She worked her way through high school, often full time.  She had an innate sense that finances would impact her quality of life and has always related to the feeling of wanting something better for herself but not knowing how to attain it.  After graduating college with a degree in Business Administration and concentration in Management, she spent the next 15 years navigating her career through trial and error, often looking forward to Fridays and dreading the “Monday morning blues.”

A stint working in student financial aid led her to learn about the devastating effects of loan debt, and also find joy in helping students learn about themselves. Along her journey, she learned that guidance and connection to our “inner knowing” helps us take the reins in our own life.

She combined these realizations and eventually, her entrepreneurial spirit took over and Conscious College Connections was born.

Always seeking to learn new methods to help students, Jackie was captivated when, through a webinar on aptitude testing, she learned a person's national-born strengths, which she calls superpowers, are solidified. She knew this was a key to guiding students to fulfill their dreams.  Naturally, she immediately signed up to take her own aptitude test; results indicated her top patterns were counseling, training, advising, teaching, and entrepreneurship. She wondered how different the course of her life would have been if she had access to this test and information as a teen.  For example, the Career Exploration Report gives specific career recommendations and provides critical clues as to what type of work will be most satisfying.  As Jackie explains, “Everyone has a superpower, they just need to learn how to lean into them.”  Today, this aptitude test is a key component in Jackie’s work with students (and adults).

For deeper insight, Jackie shares some actual scenarios that exemplify the impact coaching assessment tools have on students and how her approach and strategies support our youth in managing their future.

SCENARIO 1:

A 21-year-old woman was contemplating a transfer of colleges.  When Jackie asked what she wanted to study, she was dead-set on geology because she loves nature and studying our environment, yet she hadn't done much research on a career in that field.  After taking the aptitude test and coaching with Jackie, she realized that geology did not align.   An extrovert who needs a fast-paced, problem-solving environment with a variety of activities, her results indicated she would be more satisfied working face to face with people and dealing with ideas, concepts, and policies, rather than heavy hands-on work. Through this process, she realized she would be much more satisfied majoring in environmental science and policy and pursuing a law degree. Her draw to nature could be fulfilled through volunteering or other community involvement.

Jackie’s approach is rooted in empathy, expertise, and personal experience. She understands that young people need support in honing in on their natural abilities.

SCENARIO 2:

A high school Junior, who worked with Jackie, always thought he would follow in his father's footsteps and "go into business,". Although he thought he had a plan, Jackie encouraged him to begin with the Advanced Aptitude Testing because the results offer essential clues to which aspects are most fitting to each individual. He scored highest for spatial aptitude; indicating an engineering path.  Alternately, his personality traits came back strong for leadership and building relationships.  These new clues led to options he had never before considered. He began learning which areas of business would draw out his strengths, including acting

as liaison between technical teams and business teams, leading him to consider a sales career in the engineering industry.  This knowledge while still in high school gave him time to digest and contemplate options, providing a leg up on navigating his future.

Jackie's dedication to her work is evident in the results she achieves. By combining her passion for education with a thorough understanding of each student’s unique strengths and interests, she provides invaluable insights, actionable plans, and unwavering support that set her clients on a path to fulfillment and achievement.

EXPERIENCE THE OUTDOORS AND DISCOVER LOCAL PLANTS AND WILDLIFE

THROUGH INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS AND FAMILY FUN AT THE REIMAGINED NATURE CENTER

NatureExplore & Discover

As the exuberance of summer fades and most vacations have been taken, the fireworks and festivals are over, and kids are clamoring for something to do while simultaneously bored with most of the activities that have occupied them the past two months, many parents are looking for something new. One activity that can take up as much or as little time as you'd like is the newly re-opened Nature Center in Crystal Lake. Located at 330 N Main St, the Nature Center is nestled in the heart of Veteran Acres Park and is surrounded by beautiful walking paths that venture through towering trees and native wildlife. The Nature Center brings much of the local flora, fauna, and wildlife indoors into many interactive exhibits and beautiful displays. The Nature Center has recently undergone massive renovations, thanks to a large grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources that they received in 2023.

The Nature Center has always been a beloved place to learn about the nature around us, offering exhibits made by employees of the park district, as well as hosting many events such as birthday parties, school dances, and unique community events. Now, it boasts many bright and fun displays, murals, and aquariums, with examples of the wildlife that can be found in our own backyards. Along with the bright colors and informative displays, patrons can enjoy a butterfly habitat, home to monarchs, painted ladies, red admirals, and black swallowtails, and an active beehive you can view while they make honey and fly in and out of a custom tube connected to the outside.

CONTINUED >

John Fiorina, the Manager of Natural Resources and Interpretative Services at the Nature Center, shared with us that all the displays are the result of the joint efforts of staff and volunteers who shared their visions of what the Nature Center could be. After receiving the grant in 2023, the team went to work with a plan, involving graphic designers, contractors, and many other passionate individuals along the way. John is a self-proclaimed perfectionist and had a role in many of the displays, hand-making some of the intricate models and interactive features that make the center so engaging for visitors. Great care was taken to ensure that each display was not only accurate but relative to the local landscape, and enticing for people from 0-99.

The most standout features of the Nature Center are the interactive exhibits that bring the local environment to life. These exhibits focus on the wetlands, woodlands, and prairie ecosystems of the Crystal Lake area. Visitors can learn about the importance of these habitats, the wildlife that inhabits them, and the conservation efforts in place to protect them. The exhibits are designed to be educational and engaging for all ages, making them a perfect activity for families looking to spend quality time together while learning about nature. Grab a flashlight or magnifying glass and try to spot the queen bee in her hive or take a stroll through the butterfly habitat and observe the different stages of the butterfly life cycle, from caterpillar to chrysalis to adult.

In addition to the permanent exhibits, the Nature Center also offers a variety of special programs and events throughout the year. These include guided nature walks, educational workshops for all ages, and seasonal celebrations. For example, during the fall, the center hosts leaf-peeping tours and luminary walks, while winter brings wildlife-tracking and bird-watching events. Springtime is celebrated with wildflower walks and Earth Day activities, and summer features programs that range from orienteering to flower printing.

For those interested in outdoor activities, the Nature Center is surrounded by miles of walking paths that wind through Veteran Acres. These paths offer a peaceful retreat into nature, with opportunities to see a variety of native plants and wildlife. Most paths are family and kid friendly winding through shady forest and sun filled fields. Learn about all of the things you see on your hike at the Nature Center, or borrow a fishing rod, gps unit, or pair of their binoculars, all available for use if you call ahead.

So as summer winds down and back-to-school activities ramp up, take a moment to visit the newly redesigned Nature Center in Crystal Lake. Whether you're spending an afternoon exploring or participating in a special event, the Nature Center is a great place to continue the summer adventure, even as we head towards autumn.

LETTING GO OF SOME PRESSURE AROUND SCHOOL LUNCHES CAN BE FUN AND NOURISHING

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KLAUDIA BURIAN

ARTICLE BY KLAUDIA BURIAN NBC-HWC

For some parents, summers are bittersweet. Families transition from a structured school year, into a relaxed time, filled with parties, pools, parks, and flexible mealtimes. Once in a groove, it’s time to wind down, and start preparing for back to school, including school lunches. Kiddos eat about 5 times daily (meals and snacks), and a school lunch makes up 5 of those

35 weekly meals. When they are involved and share what’s important to them, meal-prep stress is reduced and lunch becomes a much more joyful experience.  We asked several young people what they loved the most, wanted to see more or less of, and what was truly important to them about this social meal. From those conversations, we created these meals.

Karis’s Surprise Brunch Lunch

INGREDIENTS

• Mini protein waffles

• Regular bacon

• Tater tots

• Fresh strawberries/blueberries

• Pure maple syrup

WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO KARIS ABOUT THIS LUNCH?

1. A brunch lunch is her favorite because it’s sweet and it’s breakfast

2. It includes healthy fruit like blueberries or strawberries

3. She enjoys when it’s a surprise, because she knows mom and dad care

4. She picks foods that she likes rather than just what her parents want

5. It’s real bacon, not from turkey

6. The portion is right for her

Caleb’s Snack Pack

INGREDIENTS

• Guacamole

• Roasted red pepper dip

• Sugar snap peas

• Raspberries

• Gouda cheese rounds

• Crackers

WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO CALEB ABOUT THIS LUNCH?

1. There’s no waiting in the lunch line so there’s plenty of time to talk with friends

2. No prepackaged foods which create a lot of waste

3. The idea behind this lunch is to make it like appetizers at a party

4. It is healthy, fresh and colorful

5. The variations are endless

6. No utensils required

7. Finger foods are easy to share with friends

8. Leftovers can be brought home for a snack

Emma and Mia’s Mediterrane-yum!

• Tzatziki cucumber yogurt sauce

INGREDIENTS

• Cucumbers and/or cherry tomatoes

• Hummus or baba ghanoush drizzled with olive oil

• Bite size cheese like feta or mozzarella

• Carrots

• Grapes and/or berries

From a healthy nutrition lens, the Mediterranean approach offers variety and a nutritional punch unlike any other. This style of eating continues to be the clear winner for keeping kiddos healthy, properly nourished, and full of energy. This approach virtually eliminates processed foods, and promotes lots of fruits, veggies, and healthy fats. A variety of nutrients, not one magic food, makes this approach stand out as a winner. With all the choices, it might be a long time before you see a repeat in this lunch box.

WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO EMMA, MIA AND THEIR MOM ABOUT THIS LUNCH?

1. We eat with our eyes first and this kaleidoscope is beautiful 2. Bento boxes support variety, separation of food, and no leaks 3. It provides whole, minimally processed choices
