Home. A little four-letter word that evokes big feelings. Home can be grounding. A base. A launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. The emotional value connected to "home" is undeniable albeit different for each of us.
When I was a younger adult, my home was filled with the energy of rambunctious boys but improvement projects always seemed to be put on hold as money and time went towards raising kids and the day to day. As time went on, and kids left the nest, I was able to get to those projects I had put off - painting, landscaping and purchasing new furniture,
I realized how happy it made me to live in a home that reflected our tastes. Once I had more time to focus on the house itself, my mind made a shift. What used to feel like daunting projects and something I could put off and “get to later,” now feels like something I should have made time for because I truly enjoy it. And walking through the door into a space that brings the sense of calm is when a house becomes a home. I reflect on all the memories made in the homes where I’ve lived and I am reminded on how quickly time passes and how we should all make time for the experiences or projects that fulfill us.
Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magical thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about this issue focused on home, we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food, the aesthetics and design, but most importantly - the people.
As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your city, neighborhood, and your home.
Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold on to it as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.
Happy March!

transform visions into reality. Their team, a unique collection of talents, is dedicated to guiding individuals through the maze of decisions, offering a helping hand in the pursuit of a dream living space. TriStone becomes more than just a business; it is a partner in the journey towards creating a haven that reflects the dreams of their clients.
Founded in 2017, TriStone Development was born from the realization that Lindsay, Jeremy, and Keith were stronger together.
Having worked in the industry individually, and alongside each other for years, they decided to combine their strengths, and so Tristone emerged. Lindsay, the dreamer and designer; Keith, the meticulous builder; and Jeremy, the doer who can accomplish anything, united to form a dynamic trio. This collaboration allowed them to serve their clients with a comprehensive approach, addressing not only the physical aspects of construction but also the dreams and aspirations of their clients.
“The desire for a fresh start and a clean slate resonates with many, and the idea of breathing new life into our living spaces becomes a compelling reason for beginning the seemingly daunting journey.”
As the business thrived, the team expanded, and they opened a design studio in Crystal Lake, a place to showcase the latest trends, and provide a hub for creative exploration. The growth was not just in brick and mortar but also in personnel. Niki Ryan, who joined the TriStone family and assumed the role of lead designer, emphasizes that her “role is a partnership with the client. My job is to help them make their vision a reality, and if they don’t have a vision, I can help with that too!”
In the ever-evolving world of design, staying current is a perpetual challenge. Niki and Lindsay, at the forefront of trends, share insights into the current styles: "light, bright, and organic materials, as well as the blending of metals and styles." They find inspiration in the transformation of traditional elements into modern spaces, a refreshing trend that is both charming and functional. They also understand that not everyone is looking for their home to be a showcase of the latest fashion and they find joy in helping people find their unique style that feels right to them.
However, beyond the trends and the business, what truly resonates is the profound impact of bringing dreamers together to create spaces that reflect identity and enable clients to manifest their home aspirations. Home, the sanctuary we retreat to after the world's demands, becomes a personalized haven through TriStone's commitment to making dreams come alive. In this fusion of business and passion, TriStone Development becomes more than a design studio—it becomes a partner in creating the home of your dreams.
‘Home is where the heart is,’ or so the saying goes. And when there is so much importance embodied in your home, buying can feel daunting and selling can feel overwhelming. In the bustling world of real estate, where every transaction has its unique challenges, there is a local realtor who stands out not just for her expertise in the field, but for the remarkable journey that led her to it. Meet Marj Carpenter, a seasoned real estate professional whose story is as interesting as the homes she helps people buy and sell.
Marj entered the real estate industry in 1991, during a period of significant personal upheaval. Fresh out of a divorce and responsible for three young children, Marj found herself navigating the difficulties of single parenthood. In the midst of these challenges and in the process of purchasing her own home, she enrolled in a realty class. Little did she know, this decision would change the trajectory of her life.
"I was in school pursuing a different degree, but the realty class opened my eyes to a whole new world," Marj reflects. "I realized I could turn this into a career and create stability for my family." And that's precisely what she did. Marj's dedication and hard work propelled her into a successful real estate career, earning her the trust and admiration of clients throughout the years.
What sets Marj apart is her ability to relate to both sellers and buyers on a personal level. Having experienced the challenges of home buying firsthand, she understands the emotional and financial investment involved. "I don't have a favorite client," Marj says with a smile, "because I genuinely love working with them all. Each person's story is unique, and I enjoy helping them find the perfect home."
Marj's philosophy extends beyond the transaction itself. "I like the house that works for you," she asserts, emphasizing the importance of finding a home that suits the individual needs and lifestyles of her clients. Her mantra, "It's Not About the House," speaks volumes about her commitment to prioritizing the human aspect of real estate over mere property transactions.
Beyond her real estate career, Marj is a woman of many passions and accomplishments. A seasoned traveler, she has explored destinations like Brazil, Costa Rica, and even ventured to the icy reaches of the Antarctic Circle, where she bravely took a polar plunge. Marj has also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and explored the enchanting Galapagos Islands.
However, her adventures don't stop there. At the age of 59, with no prior experience, Marj embarked on a new journey as a triathlete. Now, racing in the 70.3 and Olympic distances, she has competed in world championships in places like Lahti, Finland, Pontevedra, Spain, and Abu Dhabi. In Lahti, she placed an impressive 14th in her age group, while in Abu Dhabi,
she claimed 4th place – a testament to her tenacity and commitment to excellence.
Marj equates her experiences as a triathlete and world traveler with her skills as a realtor. "Being a triathlete requires discipline, dedication, and perseverance," she explains. "These qualities translate to my work. I approach each real estate transaction with the same determination to achieve the best possible outcome for my clients."
Today, with three grown children and a number of grandchildren, Marj continues to find joy in both her personal and professional life. Balancing the demands of real estate with the thrill of adventure and family time, she remains an inspiration to those who know her.
Marj Carpenter is a realtor, an adventurer and a dedicated triathlete. She is a mother and grandmother. She is someone who meets all of life’s challenges with grit and determination. Marj has a unique perspective shaped by her diverse experiences which make her not only a trusted professional but also a relatable and genuine person who goes above and beyond for her clients.

3. Stir into pot with veggies. Add herbs and lemon juice.
4. With an immersion blender (or standard blender), puree warm soup until smooth. Adjust seasoning to taste.
5. Pour into bowls, drizzle with olive oil, garnish with a dollop of ricotta, carrots and squeeze of lemon. Share.
SERVES 1 - 2
So fragrant and texturally satisfying, this is a perfect vegetarian meal or a sweet side dish to share and savor. Skill level is fast, easy.
• 2 heads fresh fennel, reserve fronds and stems for fresh garnish
• 1 cup cooked white beans
• ½ bunch fresh parsley tops
• 1 clove fresh garlic, chopped
• Salt and pepper to taste
1. Chop off tops of fennel and thinly slice some for a garnish.
2. Trim off fennel bottom and discard. Slice the fennel in half crosswise, to make 1 inch wedges (like separating an orange). Season with only salt and pepper.
3. In a pan, saute fennel in olive oil or butter on each side until golden.
4. Remove from the pan and place on a serving plate.
5. Using same pan, add beans, parsley and garlic just to heat through. Pour over the fennel.
6. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, and sprinkle with chopped fresh fennel stem and fronds. Serve warm.
For the novice, the “black-thumb” or the person wanting a low-maintenance option. Moss frames, made up of dried and preserved plants, require NO water, NO soil and NO need for sun. It is hard to go wrong with these! Simply glue the items into a shadowbox and place on a wall or shelf as a piece of artwork.
The draw of these uprights and trailer plants is that they mix well with other plants and are easily propagated. Perfect for all light levels. Create a pot that has visual interest by intermingling plants and adding moss, bark or other dried foliage.
Also requiring little attention, succulents and cacti symbolize endurance and tenacity. Choose just one or create a container-full and place in a highly lit area. Always allow these beauties to fully drain before adding more water.
“With...any of the planter options, BE CREATIVE!”
Wondering when to water? Test the top two inches of soil. If it’s dry, it’s time. And if you are adding accents to any of your planters, choose items that were once living, not plastic, as they are safer for the plants AND the environment.
For the more experienced, green-thumb, these moisture-loving, panoramic mini greenhouses put your design skills to the test. Terrariums are made up of layers of soil, charcoal and LECA balls. Try different
options to decide what works best for you. Fill the glass bowl or jar with moss, ferns and sticks or bark from your yard. With these, and any of the planter options, be creative.
