Welcome to the Wellness Issue,
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue.
But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different.

We approached this issue of Cross Timbers Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health.
When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse!
For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine!
It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices.
So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year.
Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

THE HEART OF THE MATTER

ENGINES REVVING, BLOOD PUMPING, PEOPLE CARING
ARTICLE BY AMY YOUNG
I’m a scary movie fan. I admit I enjoy watching the shows that make me jump and cover my eyes. My heart races each time the medicine cabinet door closes and another image is reflected in that mirror. My husband doesn’t understand the attraction of that heart racing moment. I suppose what makes your heart race is different for everyone. Maybe it’s having your toes hanging on the edge of the plane before you jump. Maybe it’s receiving a

text from that special person. Maybe it’s looking out on the audience before you begin your presentation. Whatever makes your heart race, it can be an exhilarating feeling for sure.
For Bryan Stone, the CEO of Classic Recreations in Flower Mound, it’s the rev of an engine and being behind the wheel of a classic muscle car. Classic Recreations recreates high-performance classic vehicles. After the purchase of the company, positive refinement of its infrastructure and God’s guidance, Stone

says he began seeing success by pairing enthusiasts and collectors with amazing supercars and continuing Carroll Shelby’s legacy of innovation, craftsmanship and performance. Just looking at the pictures on the website is sure to start hearts racing for an appreciative audience.
Stone shares the core values of his company that keep hearts driven and moving in the right direction.
Faith-Driven - Believing in a higher power other than yourself is important.
Stewardship - Taking care of people

and making connections with others makes a difference.
Quality Work - Expect nothing less.
Passion - In cars, in the company, in life. Teamwork - Each member of the staff helps accomplish goals.
Integrity - Doing what’s right always.
In or Out - Staying committed to others, ourselves and our faith.
Stone has a poster in his office to remind him of these core values each day. So being a part of such a heart racing company, it only made sense to pair with the American Heart Association to help raise a goal of $1,000,000 in a three year initiative that launched in the summer of 2024. Through numerous conversations with mutual Shelby and AHA connections, Stone says it only made sense to combine efforts and form a plan to support continued research to obliterate heart disease.
Classic Recreations is unveiling the AHA Life is Why Centennial Edition Carbon Fiber Shelby GT500CR to celebrate the 100th birthday of the AHA. There will be only ten of these supercars available and $100,000 from each sale will be donated to the Life is Why Campaign. Now that is something to get your heart pumping while keeping it healthy as well.
And when your heart is right, everything else just falls into place.
Visit classic-recreations.com to see these powerful cars that will get the blood pumping of all car enthusiasts.

Influencer Xten Ancona on learning what wellness means to you

JETS, DANCE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Xten (Christen) Ancona works full-time as the Executive Vice President of sales for Vault Aviation, a private jet company based out of Dallas after an award-winning career as an IT/Software sales executive. She has also been teaching

“Anything she puts her mind and heart to will catch fire.”
and dancing professionally for more than 18 years, working with such names as the Dallas Cowboys. Her obsession though, she says, is teaching Latin fusion dance classes to adult beginners. And she doesn’t have a light touch, for anything she puts her mind and heart to will catch fire.
SITTING STILL
On November 17, 2018, Xten learned of the passing of her best friend. The following months were tumultuous as she worked to keep her job, struggled with depression and anxiety, stopped dancing and attended therapy.
“I [was] in [my therapist’s] office having a full panic attack. The physical piece of not being able to breathe because of emotion is a very complex thing. And that was my breaking point.” Her therapist kindly
but forcefully made her take medical leave, “It kind of snapped me into this realization [that] this whole time I’ve been avoiding this emotion, this grief, that I needed to go through to be mentally healthy.”
Xten traces this habit to losing her grandmother as a teenager, “I was suppressing a lot of emotions because I wanted to be perfect. I had been avoiding it to the point where now I [was] forced to make time for that illness.” Subsequently, Xten spent the first few months of her healing dealing with her grandmother’s passing before facing that of her best friend.
“It’s not always what you think of when you think of wellness, right? You think of eating your vegetables and working out. Being healthy can mean facing emotions you’re uncomfortable with. It can mean taking time to grieve. It can mean sitting still for a few days.”

THE SOUND OF MÚSICA LATINA
In 2019, Xten started to dance again and her passion returned two-fold. “I found this different sense of purpose with it. I had this unexplainable want and need to teach and spread the happiness that dance gives to me to others and show them what getting up and moving your body can do for you.” In 2020, she began to teach again. From this, came the idea to make her own activewear shorts.
XORTIES IS BORN
“In that journey, I struggled to find clothing that made me feel secure and good because my weight and all these things were fluctuating. That’s where my idea for Xorties came about, to create a line of luxury athletic wear brand that promotes movement for mental health.”
Just as with everything else, Xten approached creating her own clothing with a fierceness. “It took a while to get the shorts perfect because I didn’t want to launch something unless I truly believed in it. That’s why I feel so proud to be able to say this is a premium brand.” After the 3 years it took to source the best US-made materials and manufacturers and design them specifically for movement and activity, Xorties launched in April of 2024.
WHAT SERVES YOU
Wellness means learning to say “no” to things that don’t serve your wellness journey. For Xten, that meant deciding to stop drinking alcohol. Alcohol, being a depressant, waged war on all her progress toward becoming physically and mentally healthy. “When you experience loss, grief and
“I was suppressing a lot of emotions because I wanted to be perfect. I had been avoiding it to the point where now I [was] forced to make time for that illness.”

hard moments, you start to figure out what’s important to you. I’ve chosen to eliminate the things that don’t serve me in my life and fill it with things that I wake up and want to do. And I think that’s the number one thing: loving whatever it is that you’re doing,” she says. Even dairy and fried foods were cut out of her diet as they caused breakouts and affected the way she felt about herself.
But saying “no” can also mean removing yourself from the proximity of people who only bring you down. “I have to prioritize surrounding myself with people who support my journey. Not that they have to be on the same journey as me, but people that are understanding of my goals in my life, help support that and make me
feel empowered.” As busy and active as Xten is, saying “no” to projects was just as important as saying “yes” to Xorties.
COMING FULL CIRCLE
Now in 2025, comes a very “full circle moment” for Xten as she plans for her wedding to fiance Chris, “I feel like I had to become my best self and be the best version I can be so that I could meet my person.” As with everything she does, Xten is going big with her wedding that will take place this February, standing next to the Mayan pyramids of her ancestors in Mexico. Shapes Fitness: A Story of Community

Danielle Cornett shares the power and beauty of an all-women's gym
ARTICLE BY MALLORY NEWELL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SANDRA LYNCH PHOTOGRAPHY

When Danielle Cornett and her husband first saw Shapes Fitness, an all-women’s gym open on Long Prairie Road, they both shook their heads, “An all-women’s gym? That’s not a thing. [It’s] never gonna make it.” A self-proclaimed gym girl, Danielle had worked in the fitness industry for years and was currently working as a trainer and bootcamp instructor at a local gym. After building a relationship with the owner of Shapes, helping to teach a few classes and then a few more, the previous owner pulled Danielle aside and asked her to buy the gym.
She was skeptical at first, unsure of how much time and effort it would take to make this sort of gym successful. 5 years later though? “It’s exactly where I’m supposed to be,” she says, “now I know that all the years of doing other things in the fitness industry were preparing me to do this.” As she took ownership in November of 2019, it hit her: this type of gym and community was needed and wanted by so many women.
“The only difference between us and a bigger gym is that we’re smaller, we’re pink and we’re all women. We’re coming here to build muscle and get fit. I’m here to build bodies.” On top of the rigorous training provided by the toned and smiling team of Shapes, the level of comfort provided at a place such as this is not found in many gyms. Surrounded by fellow women, the worry of looking good, sweating in awkward places or doing hip thrusters is never a worry at Shapes. “It’s a comfort place for people. I don’t think I realized [it] was needed until I was in it.”
Now at 53, this is the fittest she’s ever been, Danielle says. “I was always a gym girl but I just went through the motions, but it turned around for me when I had this place. It pushed me out of my comfort zone to be my best self for them. You can’t teach what you don’t know.” And Danielle certainly does not lack practice in what she preaches.
The community created at Shapes, Danielle says, is yet another reason that her love for her business
“The only difference between us and a bigger gym is that we’re smaller, we’re pink and we’re all women. We’re coming here to build muscle and get fit. I’m here to build bodies.”
is so great. All ages, new moms, experienced gym rats, those who have never held a barbell in their life, those who want to recover from injuries—all are welcome by the staff and the fellow clients. “One of my girls was 70 and she had never worked out a day in her life. She looked in those classes and was super intimidated. I talked her into coming in and now she literally has shoulders and biceps.”
With childcare available at Shapes, the new moms who walk through the doors only add to the diversity of the community that Shapes boasts. “When moms are leaving with their kids, little boys and little girls get to see and watch her and all these mommies working out, punching and kickboxing. You want kids to see women working out and women being strong.” The little girls of the future will work out one day because their mommy had muscles too.
Shapes is part of Danielle’s life now, not only as owner, “No joke, the second I walk in this door every day and am greeted with all these women that are happy to be here, I’m automatically in a good mood,

it’s 1000% my happy place. I can’t imagine not having this to come to do. I don’t know what I would do.”
“I want people to know that this gym is for everybody. I want them to realize that, just because it’s pink and all women, it doesn’t mean that we aren’t serious and working hard.” And the muscles of the friendly-faced, kickboxing and pink-clad women are a true testament to that. This place is for motivating, making friends and caring for the women of the community but, as Danielle says, “There are a lot of tears on this floor.

NONTOXIC NECESSITIES
Twelve essential products that provide quality results with natural ingredients
Just like McDonalds has its arches, Dawn has its ducks. We have likely all seen the images of the popular dish soap cleaning animals after an oil spill thanks to years of advertisements preaching the benefits and effectiveness of the product. What these commercials and billboards do not include are the active ingredients that make up the household name, likely because sulfates, artificial dyes, chlorine and preservatives aren’t as appealing as adorable wildlife being cleaned. The reality is, these toxic chemicals can be found in many household and beauty products that have become popular names.
The skin is the largest organ in our body, and the products we use on and around it can have an effect on our wellbeing. Though these ingredients may not seem to pose an immediate threat to most people, they can cause allergic reactions and some toxins

HEY HUMANS DEODORANT
Switching to an aluminum-free antiperspirant has become quite a controversy over the past few years as the ingredient was speculated to be linked to some illnesses like cancer and kidney disease. Though you may have heard natural deodorants are sticky and don’t work as well, Hey Humans has crafted a formula from essential oils that may top your normal brand.

EVOLVH SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
Finding the perfect shampoo and conditioner for your hair is no simple feat, and though the grocery-brand options aren’t all bad options, many contain harmful chemicals that strip hair of color and shine. Switch to Evolvh for an all-natural hair treatment that protects hair by infusing nutrients for a natural shine and silkiness without sulfates, silicones, parabens, and other synthetic ingredients.
can stay in the body or environments surrounding us for decades. Why not make the choice to protect yourself and positively impact your health by switching to organic, nontoxic products with a proven track record of success and satisfaction? Thankfully, there are more products than ever that focus on clean ingredients, sustainable packaging, and skip the animal testing, that are readily available for purchase online or found at your local grocery store.
It’s easy to assume organic products may not be as effective as the name brand competitors, but there is plenty of research that concludes otherwise and suggests that nontoxic, clean ingredients are better for yourself and your home. You don’t have to sacrifice quality with these twelve products that provide the same result with naturally sourced ingredients.
Toiletry Products

JUICE BEAUTY MOISTURIZER
Instead of treating your skin with synthetic ingredients that disrupt the barrier, use Juice Beauty’s anti-wrinkle moisturizer to boost hydration and reduce fine lines. By using organic, antioxidant-rich ingredients like shea and jojoba, this facial moisturizer will naturally improve your skin radiance and restore balance.

PLAINE PRODUCTS
It’s time to ditch that bar of soap that strips your skin of beneficial oils and switch to a body wash that focuses on soothing and restoring the skin's natural balance using healing ingredients like green tea and aloe. Plaine Products body wash is zero waste, hypoallergenic, and free of harmful chemicals but does not sacrifice quality, and will leave your skin feeling smooth and smelling fresh.

WELLNESSE TOOTHPASTE
While you may be wary of changing up your tooth brushing routine over fears of poor taste or chalky formula, Wellness toothpaste not only provides the same minty fresh breath, but eliminates stains and fights bad breath simultaneously. Instead of fluoride, this toothpaste uses hydroxyapatite, the mineral that makes up our enamel to strengthen teeth naturally.

DR. BRONNER’S NATURAL SHAVING SOAP
Harmful ingredients irritate skin enough as is, so when it comes to selecting the perfect shaving soap, prioritizing naturally soothing ingredients is essential. That’s the basis of Dr.Bronners’ products and is why the shaving soap infused with organic coconut, hemp seed, and olive oil is a popular, clean choice for both men and women.
Household Items

ECOS LAUNDRY DETERGENT
Speaking from experience, common laundry detergent may leave clothes smelling fresh, but the synthetic scents and dyes can irritate skin and overpower the palate. Opt to purchase Ecos at your local store for its plant-based ingredients with natural scents that leave clothes feeling and smelling just as fresh as mainstream brands.

COMMON GOODS DISH SOAP
Washing dishes daily is a common occurrence for most, but it doesn’t need to be so detrimental to your manicure. Switch to natural dish soap like Common Goods that is tough on grease but gentle on hands.

DIRTY LABS DISH DETERGENT
If you want to avoid pre-washing dishes before loading them into the washer, you don’t need to use toxic parabens and preservatives to do so. Dirty Labs dish powder uses natural bio enzymes to break down food to offer the same streak-free finish as regular detergent without harsh chemicals.

MEYERS ALL PURPOSE CLEANER
Since the smell of your household cleaner is likely to linger on many surfaces in your home, make sure it’s not also leaving behind harsh chemicals like chlorine or ammonia that can be found in many popular brands. Meyers all-purpose uses essential oils and organic ingredients to kill the same germs without the negative effects.

CARAWAY CUTTING BOARD
There are enough added ingredients in food as is, so avoid contributing harmful microplastics from your cutting board by using FSC-certified birch wood from Caraway. Coated in a mineral and oil wax, these boards can be used for years without becoming an extra seasoning on your food.

SEVENTH-GENERATION DISINFECTING WIPES
Disinfecting wipes are a simple way to leave highly trafficked surfaces feeling clean and smelling fresh, but regular brands often also leave harmful residue and harsh fumes. Choose Seventh Generation wipes to kill germs naturally using ingredients like citronella and thyme instead of harsh chemicals.

AN HERB A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY

SAVE YOURSELF TIME AND MONEY BY GROWING THESE HERBS IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD
If you are one of the many people who dread and often forget to make a trip outside each morning to water your plants, a quick trip to your local grocery store can seem enticing. However, growing herbs at home does not require much commitment and is an easy alternative to store-bought pesticide-filled greens. With the help of some sunlight through the window or an indoor herb garden equipped with its own light and watering system, growing herbs at home has never been easier. Brag to your friends and family when using any of these easily grown herbs that will elevate the flavor and add essential nutrition to any dish.

AN ITALIAN STAPLE:
PEPPERMINT ISN’T JUST FOR THE HOLIDAYS:
Though it may seem peppermint is only prevalent in a holiday drink or toothpaste, fresh mint can be added to many common indulgences like chicken or shrimp gyros, a fruity lemonade, watermelon mint salad, and greek sauce, for an additional depth of flavor. Including mint in your food can also help relieve indigestion and stomach pain, improve brain function, and ease cold symptoms.
Perhaps one of the most commonly used herbs, basil is often associated with Italian dishes such as caprese salad or margherita pizza. What you may not know is that it is used to treat many conditions like head colds, fluid retention, acne, and snake bites due to its promotion of blood circulation. So next time you have a pesto pasta, don’t hesitate to have that extra serving.

02 03 04
A TOAST TO RANCH:
Often associated with pickles, dill is an incredibly versatile herb that can be easily mixed into your diet for its healing properties like reducing cholesterol and improving heart health. This is fantastic news for those like me who could dip nearly anything in a hefty serving of ranch, but if you’d prefer another option, add dill to your homemade tzatziki sauce, on your salmon, potatoes, fish, or any mediterranean-inspired meal.
FROM WEED TO SUPERFOOD:
Though commonly dismissed as a weed in the yard, chives are highly prevalent in North Texas and contain numerous health benefits that can help prevent cancer and improve memory. Sprinkling a handful on your omelet, baked potato, or stir fry, can add an extra layer of flavor as well as a hint of essential vitamins A and C.

Brûléed Ricotta
ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BETZHOLD

Your new favorite mediteranean dessert
One of the least restrictive diets around, the mediterranean diet focuses on improving cardiovascular health by consuming low-fat and low-sugar ingredients, emphasizing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, and legumes. Simple, fresh and clean desserts like the brûléed ricotta recipe below, can satisfy a craving for a sweet treat while staying on track.
ingredients:
• 2 cups whole-milk ricotta cheese
• 1 tsp lemon zest
• 2 tbsp honey
• 2 tbsp granulated sugar
• Fresh raspberries
steps:
1. Arrange oven rack in the highest spot. Turn the oven to broil on high.
2. Mix the first three ingredients together in a large bowl. Divide mixture into four ramekins and place on a baking sheet. Cover the top of each with sugar.
3. Place the baking sheet in the oven and broil until golden-brown and bubbling (about 5-10 minutes).
4. Top with raspberries to serve.
