Merry Christmas to All!
The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best.

This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love.
Happy Holidays!

MAKING SPIRITS BRIGHT

A Hundred DOZEN TAMALES

ARTICLE BY MALLORY NEWELL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY VANESSA VAN TREASE
A hundred dozen tamales were made on Christmas Eve every year in Vanessa’s home. She went to sleep to the sound of clanking pots as her mother cleaned up the aftermath to awake to a clean kitchen on Christmas morning. The sounds and smells of Christmas are the annual memories that visit us, slipping as invisible guests through the door. They reawaken the sense of belonging and celebrating loving and being loved.
It all started because Vanessa’s mother, Minerva, was from Mexico. “She moved to the United States to be with my father. But she missed her country, home and traditions. So she decided she was going to start making tamales and welcome others into her culture.”
Throughout Christmas Eve, friends and neighbors pour into Vanessa’s childhood home. “It was a tradition over the years,” Vanessa laughs, “It was like an open house.” People would show up invited or not, just knowing they were welcome at Minerva’s door. “My mother would say, ‘I’m always prepared for a little hungry traveler’,” Vanessa recalls.

THE SOUNDS AND SMELLS OF CHRISTMAS ARE THE ANNUAL MEMORIES THAT VISIT US, SLIPPING AS invisible GUESTS THROUGH THE DOOR. THEY REAWAKEN THE SENSE OF belonging AND CELEBRATING LOVING AND BEING loved .

The tradition continued for many, many years. Eventually, a crew of ladies would gather around the table and help make the tamales, talking, making tamales, talking more and making more tamales. It was a family affair for Vanessa’s family and so many others.
The girl from Mexico had indeed brought about a Christmas tradition to impact many. After moving from Port Arthur, her mother and father began again in Flower Mound with their new friends and church family. The joy of filling a need continued in yet another new home. “People would knock on my mom’s door and say, ‘Hey Minerva, you got a cup of coffee?’”
Minerva was always cooking, feeding any and everyone who walked through her door and proclaimed they were hungry. “However you grow up, whatever your normal is, you just assume everyone lives like that. You don’t realize until you get old it was a labor of love.” Minerva’s cooking, especially her tamales, was a labor of love for the next generation.
“After dinner, [we] always sat on the front porch at my uncle’s house. That was so part of my family and the Mexican culture. That’s how you build. That’s when you would learn about your heritage, you would learn about your ancestors and then you would play with your cousins.”
This legacy of community is one that Vanessa clings to. It’s shaped the way she lives her own life as the owner of Chateau Realty and the Lakeside Village Realty Group. “People just want to be part of something special. I’ve come to realize [it] even more so, especially with Project Lakeside. It’s the thing that everyone craves that they’re not aware of [craving]. They want to know they have neighbors. And that’s what we do.” Project Lakeside is yet another addition to the Lakeside Village community on Lake Grapevine. It adds villas to the mix to further the endeavor of creating (quite literally) a village and a sense of community. Lakeside Village is about creating community, through the simplicity of establishing all the things that allow culture and community to be created like homes and villas, parks and music, food and places to watch the sunset.

SANTA LUCIA
Saint Lucy’s Day is celebrated throughout the Nordic countries . Small children dress in white frill nightgowns, hand out buns, and wear lights on their heads. This is in celebration of Lucia, a young Christian girl who, born in 283, would wear a candle on her head to keep both hands free as she delivered food to the needy. Lucia eventually died a martyr for her Christian faith.
A CANDLE IN THE WINDOW
Light a candle and place it in your window in accordance with this ancient and popular Irish tradition. The candle welcomes in the unborn baby Jesus by serving as a guide for Joseph and Mary in search of shelter.
KARAVAKI
This ancient Greek tradition incorporates the lighting and decorating of ships and boats to guide sailors back home to their families for Christmas Eve. This tradition is beautiful in its creativity and focus on bringing our loved ones from afar.

A Family’s STORY
AS TOLD FROM THE BRANCHES OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE

ARTICLE BY AMY YOUNG | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PIXEL PERFECT ROSE

When you step through the door of Helen Nicholson’s home, her family’s Christmas story begins. Her home is filled with sentimental things, passed down through generations, and all pieces tell the story of a life lived. From the goldpainted macaroni frame ornaments to the vintage keepsakes from grandparents to seashells from beach trips, her traditional tree is a testament to her love of family and friends. “God writes us into this season of time, and I want people to walk in my home and say ‘I know who lives here’.”
Whether you prefer a traditional tree with an assortment of ornaments, or a theme tree
with matching decorations of color and style, Helen suggests choosing your tree with care. Feel the branches in the front, middle and back. Make sure there are some branches that are bendable and can be formed to fit your decorating vision. Begin by twisting wired ribbon around those bendable branches starting from the top and going down. Next, nestle large ornaments in the gaps on the inside of your tree and use the smaller ornaments on the tips of branches in the front.
When I asked Helen for the one piece she could not do without for her holiday decorating, she quickly said “Ribbon!” Ribbon can ground a tree or a room with a chosen color palette. It can be used on a tree, a mantle, windows, furniture, packaging, and everywhere you want a pop of color or need some beautiful filling. Her advice is to learn

to tie and use ribbon by watching tutorials on TikTok and Youtube. Her favorite source for quality ribbon is The Decorator’s Warehouse in Arlington. Whatever color or style you need, it can be found there.
She reminds us that a traditional and unique tree will begin with few ornaments and will be filled as quickly as time passes. Use ribbon and balls to fill the gaps while your story is being created. Some people shy from a more traditional tree because it may not match the room. “Don’t fall into this trap,” she warns. Holiday decorations are your own personal and amazing story. Let it be told loud and proud.

CHRISTMAS on the ROCKS

What makes the special seasonal options at our favorite shops and restaurants so appealing? How are they any different than the regular concoctions on the menu? Because they encapsulate the flavors, concepts and memories that we hold in association with Christmas. Simply the look of crimson cranberries with a sprig of rosemary or a whiff of cinnamon and nutmeg brings us back to Christmases past. With sparkling sugar crystals on the rim of a glass, comes the sense of wonder and joy that the holidays bring.
Marty B’s Coffee knows those exact flavors and smells that bring that little extra bit of joy to their customers. For that sweet swirl of mint that is so reminiscent of candy canes hanging on ever-green branches, try the warm Peppermint White Mocha or the Frosted Candy Cane Cold Brew.
The 3 new lattes on the menu make nods to subsequent archetypal Christmas flavors: the sweet decadence of creme brulee, that Christmas Eve glass of eggnog and aromatic gingerbread cookies.
While these lattes operate as more of a passionate love letter to one distinct flavor, the options at the bar of Marty B’s Coffee are deeper in their concept and layers with the Sugar Cookie Martini, White Christmas Margarita and Festive Fizz.
Let your drive-thru order or an evening at the bar of Marty B’s Coffee bring you together with your loved ones in remembering holidays past.

THE JOY of Giving

A CONVERSATION WITH MARIETTA TERRY
ARTICLE BY AIMEE BUCKERT
“The Word of God sustains us and heals our souls. It brings redemption and renews our spirits.”
In a world where the true meaning of the holiday season can sometimes be overshadowed by materialism, Marietta Terry, a wife, mother, grandmother and woman of God, reminds us of the importance of faith, family and giving. Over an elegant spread of fine china, tea and her favorite Danish cookies, Marietta shared the values that have guided her through decades of service to her family and community and the story of how her devotional book, Mornings With Nana, came to fruition.
Marietta’s story is rooted in both her deep faith and her desire to pass it on to future generations. It all began as a personal practice, sending daily scripture texts to her children and grandchildren. “I wanted to keep them in my prayers, to remind them of God’s Word in their daily lives,” she shared. What started as a simple gesture grew into a cherished tradition, with Marietta’s daily messages becoming a source of comfort and encouragement for her loved ones.
The turning point came on her 80th birthday when her family surprised her with a special gift: a book compiled of all the devotions she had sent over the years. “I couldn’t believe the effort they had put into it,” she said, her eyes lighting up with gratitude. “The gift meant more to me than the product itself because it was their way of honoring the words I had shared with them.” Encouraged by her husband Ted, who had experience in publishing, they decided to take it a step further, turning her personal devotions into a book for others to enjoy. And so, Mornings With Nana was born.
When I asked Marietta about her inspiration for the daily devotions, she explained that it wasn’t just about staying connected with her family—it was about sharing the Word of God with others in need. “The Word of God sustains
- Marietta Terry
us and heals our souls. It brings redemption and renews our spirits,” explained Marietta. For her, the scriptures are a source of life, and she hopes her readers find the same sense of peace and renewal in them.
Guided by prayer, Marietta selects scriptures that resonate with the spiritual needs of her loved ones, often drawing from passages like Psalms that emphasize finding fulfillment and faith over material things. This focus on spiritual richness carries through to her family’s holiday tradition of giving back.
This spirit of giving extends beyond her family. Marietta and Ted remain active in their church and local community. They recently started a booth at The Painted Tree in Highland Village, where they sell Christian books, Bibles and journals. “It’s a way for us to continue serving and providing resources for others to grow in their faith,” Marietta explained. The one booth quickly expanded to two so that they could offer Christian art and home decor, creating a space where people can find meaningful gifts that reflect their beliefs.
Marietta’s advice for others is simple but profound: “Share your personal stories and experiences. You never know how your words might resonate with someone else.” Whether it’s through a book, a conversation or a small act of kindness, Marietta believes that giving of oneself is one of the greatest gifts we can offer. Her life is a true testament to the power of faith, family and community. She continues to give back, both through her words and her actions, inspiring all who are fortunate enough to know her. As we prepare for the holiday season, Marietta’s story serves as a gentle reminder that the most valuable things we can give don’t come wrapped in paper, they come from the heart.
O HEAR
VOICES! the Angel
THE CHRISTMAS MUSIC THAT IMPACTS US

ARTICLE BY AMY YOUNG
O Holy Night
Lyrics
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth; Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ‘Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn; Chorus
Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!
O night divine! O night when Christ was born.
O night, O holy night, O night divine.
Years ago in a San Angelo church, a young bride sat with her new family to celebrate Christmas. The candles glowed, the organ played, and the soloist began to sing. As the soloist’s voice grew stronger and notes went higher, tears flowed down the bride’s cheeks. Tears of longing for her own family she had never been away from on Christmas and tears of joy for the new family she was welcomed into to begin new memories. My heart is still warmed each time I hear “O Holy Night” during the holidays. This hymn sparks such strong joy in my heart for the love of family as I remember with fondness the Christmas Eve I sat in that church.
The words to “O Holy Night,” written by a French poet named Placide Cappeau, celebrated the renovation of the church organ. Four years later, the Jewish composer Adoph Adam wrote music to accompany the lyrics and “Cantique de Noel“ was born.
In 1906 after the hymn gained popularity in America, Reginald Fessenden - professor and former chemist for Thomas Edison - used a generator and microphone to broadcast voice over the airwaves by reading the Christmas story from Luke. When he was finished, he held his violin and played “O Holy Night” making it the first carol to be shared via airwaves.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;
The hymn has other legends surrounding its history, but for me, it will always mean the love of family. Many musicians have recorded a version and my favorite rendition is from Martina McBride. The high note at the end brings fresh tears each time I hear this beautiful Christmas carol.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
