Eat, Drink and Be Merry, Then Do It Again!

Why not? Who knows what tomorrow may bring. If the food is good, the style of cuisine to your liking, the wine and libation list creatively priced within reason, then there is no better time to support your local restaurant, wine bar or brew pub. As we emerged from the dark days of 2020 to 2021 the quality and service in restaurants has returned to whatever was “normal” for those that survived the pandemic (it wasn’t easy!).

While prices are higher due to inflation, the smart customer- and community-focused restaurants have kept the tab at the end of a date night for two somewhat under control. A creative way of doing that has been to increase the size of a portion so their patrons can share. Since Robin is an expert at “sharing,” this has made her very happy. Besides...even I am willing to share an 18-oz Kansas City Strip Steak on the menu of the new and quite excellent Old Oaks Steak House in Thousand Oaks. As a result, their $80 steak really becomes a $40 steak. Since it is aged premium beef, once we add in shared sides, that’s plenty of food. Our first visit was somewhat, “new restaurant not quite ready for prime time.” We gave it another shot and were very pleased. As you enter, the wine wall built by Scott Berry’s Cellar Masters is stunning.

We enjoyed a remarkably good food- and wine-pairing experience at Marcello Ristorante. The carefully chosen Italian wines paired perfectly with excellent eggplant parmesan, marinated shrimp and the rest of a multicourse small bites dinner.

Last but certainly not least…wine! The best wine bar/winery in the Conejo is and has been for many years, NABU Wines. I have been begging Greg Barnett to submit his Napa, Malibu and now Mendocino and Paso Robles wines into competition. He is now knocking the ball out of the park with multi medals from state fairs and wine events throughout SoCal. The reds are superior wines that can also be aged. The Alberino, a not too well-known Spanish varietal, is a star.

Also take a look at our Sonoma wine country trip. More on that inside this issue.

Mizel Estate Wines: Bringing the Unexpected to Life

On a gorgeous afternoon, you stroll through a stunning vineyard surrounded by mountains and vast blue sky as far as the eye can see. Afterward, relaxing at a lovely table set among the vines, you savor a flight of luscious, velvety red wines. You’ve just experienced the unexpected magic of Mizel Estate Wines, nestled in the heart of Thousand Oaks’ Hidden Valley, just 25 miles north of Los Angeles.

ESTATE-GROWN PERFECTION

The name “Mizel” is a blend of the names of the owners, Michael and Zelene Fowler, who established the vineyard in 2014 with the goal of creating world-class wines.

Mizel Estate Wines are grown on their 38-acre estate in the Malibu Coast AVA (American Viticultural Area). The geography of Mizel Estate, located on a fertile valley floor protected by mountains, provides ideal growing conditions for exceptional fruit.

When you taste Mizel’s fine wines, you drink in the pure expression of their vineyard.

“The real secret to Mizel’s superb red wines is the ground they come from,” says Mizel’s Winemaker, Guillaume Fabre. “The soil brings the tannin structure and creates a certain elegance that is so difficult to find—and impossible to add.”

HANDCRAFTED ELEGANCE

Mizel Estate Wines is a boutique, limited-production winemaker, focused on quality. Sustainably grown and hand-harvested, only the choicest grapes are used for Mizel Wines.

“Mizel’s dedicated team has control over the entire winemaking process, which allows us to consistently produce excellent wines,” says Michael Fowler.

Mizel grows six French grape varieties on their estate that are well suited to their terroir: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah. Throughout the growing season, the vines are nurtured under the direction

of Estate Manager Hector Ambriz and Winemaker Fabre, who bring forth the premium characteristics of each individual block of Mizel’s extraordinary fruit. As harvest approaches, the grapes are carefully monitored to ensure that each variety is harvested at its peak.

The winemaking commences in Paso Robles, with Fabre managing crush and fermentation, bringing forth each grape variety’s unique flavor profile. Afterward, each varietal is aged in superlative French oak for 18 months.

“There is a little bit of an art and science to figuring out which types of oak and how old the barrels should be for each varietal. Guillaume is the expert, and he knows best,” says Fowler.

When the aging is complete, the Fowlers meet with Fabre to taste wine from over 30 different barrels to decide which ones to blend. This passionate winemaking team combines their expertise and perspectives to skillfully blend Mizel Estate’s signature wines: First Impression Bordeaux Blend, Easy to Please Grenache and Smooth Touch Syrah. Each vintage is meticulously blended based on the characteristics of the fruit from the year’s harvest.

The results of the Mizel team’s efforts shine through in their opulent red wines. Mizel’s nuanced, elegant red wines dazzle the palate with lingering flavors of fruit and spice.

On the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, guests are invited to Mizel’s private estate for an afternoon wine tasting

SONOMA VALLEY wine country

EXPLORE PREMIUM CALIFORNIA WINES

ARTICLE BY BEN MALKIN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEN MALKIN & LEFT COAST PHOTOGRAPHY

While Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley are next-door neighbors in the heart of premium California wine country, a visit and wine tasting tour shows contrasting styles, experiences and wines to enjoy.

Napa wineries are easily accessible. From the south to the north most of the wineries are located on a grid bordered by Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail. Your visit to Sonoma Valley is more of an adventure requiring the use of Google Maps, and better yet, a good old-fashioned printed Sonoma Valley winery map. For Robin’s annual December birthday vacation, we dove into the “adventure” of a visit to Sonoma Valley.

Sonoma Valley is much more laid back than Napa Valley—$1,000/night rooms and acres of resort facilities are not part of the culture. For me, that’s a good thing. Michelin star or wannabe star restaurants and $400 dinners for two are for Napa, not Sonoma.

The advantage of a late December visit is less traffic and reduced crowds at the wineries. These days it is always best to schedule appointments for everything from a tasting to a complete wine and food pairing at some wineries. With the generous help of Amy Patrick at Sonoma County Vintners, we scheduled visits to wineries in the Russian River Valley all the way up north to the Alexander Valley, enjoying beautiful road trips from Sonoma to Healdsburg to Santa Rosa. We visited the heart of their Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel country.

Next, some advice on quality vs. quantity: Schedule no more than three wineries a day and if lunch is included, perhaps just two. We enjoyed incredible food and wine pairings at St. Francis Winery and Ram’s Gate Winery. Each provided a unique experience that we will always treasure. You can also choose to stay out of your car for an afternoon and visit the tasting rooms on the square in Sonoma.

We kicked things off at Ram’s Gate Winery (RamsGateWinery. com), located at the entrance to Sonoma Valley near the famous Sonoma Raceway. Their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are classically Russian River and Carneros. The wine and food pairing was perfect and so extensive that we skipped dinner that evening.

One of our favorite wineries is Chateau St. Jean (ChateauStJean. com). We have been members for many years. Their Cinq Cepage Bordeaux style blend is very special, as is their Russian River Pinot Noir. They were recently bought by Foley Family Wines. That meant when we visited Chalk Hill Estate Winery (ChalkHill. com) later in the week (perhaps the best Chardonnay in Sonoma County), we were members; so corporate ownership is not always something to bemoan. In fact, the Foley-owned wineries have retained and perhaps improved their quality.

Another special experience was a visit to Ledson Winery ( Ledson.com). They are family owned and managed and very proud of it. The beautiful building and grounds are chocka-bock full of family history. They offer a wide choice of varietals and award-winning wines. You can spend hours just shopping in their marketplace.

Chateau St. Jean

The next day we enjoyed another food and wine pairing at St. Francis Winery and Vineyard (StFrancisWinery.com) featuring a wonderful parade of small bites and premium, 90+ scoring Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. You can find their wine at the grocery store, but you need to visit to get the best of the best.

We headed north to Chalk Hill Estate Winery (ChalkHill. com). It was a very adventuresome drive, but well worth it when we finally got there. We found Chardonnay to die for (their “flagship varietal) and sublime Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Visit or join for 90+ showstoppers. We spent 2 or more hours tasting the wine and gazing at the vineyards.

Our final experience was far to the north at Zialena Winery ( Zialena.com). Family owned and nurtured by Mark Mazzoni, the wine-making tradition here goes back to 1931 and the culture of workers at Italian Swiss Colony saving money to buy their own land. The wine is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and their own Zinfandel Mazzoni clone; very, very Alexander Valley. Their Cabernet and Zinfandel from the Alexander Valley are some of my favorites, well-structured and graceful.

The goal of our trip was to enjoy great wine, hence no restaurant reviews. On the other hand, our wine and food pairings were the most memorable highlight of our trip. Maybe next time we’ll visit Paso Robles wine country for more great wine, lots of driving and exploring. Cheers!!

Guests can participate in a White Burgundy Seminar, Global Blind Taste Challenge or specialty winemaker lunches and dinners that showcase the beloved grape. On Friday and Saturday, a VIP Grand Tasting brings wine lovers to the beautiful grounds all afternoon.

FINAL GIRL WINES, SOLVANG’S SLASHER TASTING ROOM

Could you ever dream up a spooky wine tasting room, where bottles showcase film scenes of girls who survived slasher movies? Where ghoulish artifacts abound and moving glowing faces pop from the fireplace as bold expressive wines, from Sauvignon Blanc to an orange “Skin Contact” white blend, are poured. Surely a Goth-like educational vino experience to remember!

BRECON ESTATE’S CHIC PASO ROBLES PROPERTY

More than 40 grape varieties ripen to perfection in the Adelaide sub district of Paso, where the Brecon Estate is named after a national park in South Wales, and where the couple who began the boutique winery met, exploring their love of caves. Here, in this land of warm days and cool nights in the rolling westside hills, absorb the tranquil setting on the patio of this stylish modern architecturally stunning property, with a tasting flight of the oldest Cabernet vines on the Central Coast.

Brecon Estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are recognized as part of the Historic Vineyard Society. The 2022 Budgie Smuggler, a four-red blend with just 374 cases produced, was especially tantalizing for our taste buds.

Just a short spin ahead, arrive at Sterling Vineyards, where a gondola ride brings guests to wine taste around the white stucco wannabe Mykonos structure with a view 300 feet above the town and panoramic views of Napa Valley.

CHATEAU MONTELENA, WHERE THE WINE PUT NAPA ON THE MAP

Carved into the hillside, spiral up to this 100+ year old French chateau dripping in ivy and flanked by Chinese gardens, a Jade Lake and “Parking for Irish Only,” as these elements tell the unique history of three different owners during the past century. This vineyard put Napa on the map during a blind wine tasting in 1973. Known for crafting age-worthy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, this vineyard invites guests to learn the stories behind each vintage with a wine tasting at this “Judgment of Paris” white wine winner.

A BACON AND WINE PAIRING AT PRIEST RANCH IN YOUNTVILLE

In the idyllic culinary town of Yountville in Napa Valley, determine your favorite red varietals at Priest Ranch’s Bacon and Wine Pairing, with four reds from their 1,700-acre estate, 20 minutes away. Here, the fats soften the tannins, enhancing the wine. Discover your favorite pairing like the 2022 Priest Ranch Cab with Pear Mostarda Bacon.

ANDERSON VALLEY’S DISCO RANCH AND LAIDBACK TASTING ROOMS

This relaxed wine paradise produces the best small production wines, most notably Pinot Noirs and traditional method sparkling wines. Spiral through the Anderson Valley, where time stands still, in a good way. Visit bucolic Goldeneye, where female winemaker Katey Larwood showcases a reserve tasting of Pinots and Gewurztraminer.

Be surprised at Brashley Vineyards tasting room, with an amazing dry Riesling (with Finger Lakes grapes) and a mindblowing White Pinot Noir, thanks to winemaker Ashley Holland. She also produces incredible wines under her own Read Holland brand, like the 2021 Deep End Pinot Noir and Peter Martin Ray Chardonnay (Santa Cruz Mountains), named Top 50 Wines in the U.S. by Decanter.

In the heart of this cool climate rural wine region, get to know more wines at the Disco Ranch, a rustic wine bar and specialty food market with a friendly patio. Female winemaker Shalini Sekhar showcased her Ottavino wines, luring us with her St. Laurent varietal from Los Carneros AVA.

Arrive for Anderson Valley’s White Wine Festival in February, Pinot Fest in May or harvest in the fall. Create your own wine tasting tour any time of year, as the charm of this redwood vineyard landscape in NorCal is part of the allure. This is California at its best! Sip wines like speed dating at Husch, Lussier and Foursight. Try a Gewurztraminer from Lula, rustic bubbles from Fathers and Daughters, Sauvignon Blanc from Topaz and White Riesling from Navarro.

Cheers to the good life, or as they say in Boonville, “Bahl Hornin!” or “Good Drinking!”

WINE FEATURES IN YOUR LIVING SPACE

Cellar Masters

ARTICLE BY GREG BARNETT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREG BARNETT AND SCOTT BERRY
“Our clients’ tastes are unique ... You dream it, and Cellar Masters will create it.”

Years ago, when you started collecting wine, the idea of having a wine cellar in your home began with finding a space where you could fit wine racks and keep it cool. Fast forward, and they are now what Cellar Masters calls wine features in your living space or business. This means you can not only enjoy your wine collection in your dining room, living room or unique space, but also watch your collection grow. Okay, and maybe brag about it to friends or customers too!

Cellar Masters was founded in 1990 for that very reason—to sit down with clients, listen to their needs and design a climate-controlled wine storage experience for them to enjoy every day.

“I have assembled an incredible experienced team at Cellar Masters to design, build and install cellars and wine storage for your home or for your business,” says Cellar Masters Owner Scott Berry, who has installed more than 2,500 custom wine cellars throughout the region.

As avid wine collectors and restaurateurs have experienced with Cellar Masters, the team applies their knowledge and experience to create wine features tailored to each client’s specific needs.

“Call it our obsession…we love visiting a new home or business, listening, designing and creating their custom wine cellars every step of the way,” says Scott. “We understand our clients' tastes are unique for each project, so their wine cellar is personalized to suit their needs. You dream it, and Cellar Masters will create it!”

Serving both residential and commercial clients, Cellar Masters’ team of design experts and installation professionals works in concert to build custom wine cellars of all shapes and sizes

to protect your wine collection and enhance your home or business. From the elegant beauty of a traditional wine cellar to contemporary wine walls, Cellar Masters excels at customizing wine features to fit any space.

“I am always pleased when discussing a new cellar with a new client and see how excited they get when they realize they do have enough space to create one, whether in an unused space under a staircase, in an unused room or on a wall,” says Scott.

A recent project involved converting an unused basement space in a historic 1894 home in Santa Barbara. This climate-controlled wine cellar, crafted from alder with exposed concrete beams, walls and floors, has become a home for the owners’ 740-bottle wine collection, featuring a central tasting table where guests can congregate to enjoy their wine. The locking, black anodized sliding doors, with their three glass panes, offer an amazing way to view the collection. “We loved how this wine feature turned out!” shares Scott.

PROTECT YOUR WINE COLLECTION

Whether you are a winemaker, collector or restaurateur, wine storage for your collection is always a concern. Keeping your wines at the perfect temperature and, of course, easy access to them is of utmost importance. Cellar Masters offers a variety of climate-controlled storage options, ranging from 12 to 250 cases per locker, including custom wine lockers and a concierge service to receive wine club deliveries.

NABU WINES

A HIDDEN GEM IN THE CONEJO VALLEY
ARTICLE BY BEN MALKIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREG BARNETT

Often referred to as a hidden gem in the Conejo Valley, NABU Wines has been an urban winery producing its handcrafted award-winning wines since 2012. Why NABU, we ask?

“When my wife Janet Barnett and I started the winery, our main focus was producing wines from Napa Valley and from our local mountains of Malibu, and that’s why we are called NABU,” says Owner Greg Barnett. Any “Star Wars” reference? “No,” he laughs, adding, “but we do have fun with our name on May the 4th, Star Wars Day, at the winery every year; people arrive in costume with light sabers and more. It’s a lot of fun.”

When you visit NABU’s winery, you have no idea what to expect, and when you step inside, you realize you have arrived at a destination. While NABU Wines still produces wine in the Napa Valley and the Malibu Coast, its focus has expanded to neighboring AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) in Northern California, including Mendocino County, where they produce Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon on the Talmage Bench in Ukiah, as well as Pinot Noir on the southern part of the Sonoma Coast.

“In 2023, I began producing white wines in Paso Robles again with Sauvignon Blanc and Albariño. Both have been well received by our guests and at competitions at fairs," says Greg. “So far, both have won two gold medals each and one silver medal each. We also have four barrels of Petit Verdot almost ready to bottle. I am very excited to share this with everyone.”

This year, NABU achieved outstanding results at the county fairs in Orange County and Los Angeles and at the mid-state fair in Paso Robles, earning a total of 15 gold, silver, and bronze medals. At press time, they were still awaiting the results from the local Ventura County Fair.

NABU Wines is the only winery in the Conejo Valley that is open every day at noon for wine tasting. The wine flight features three white wines and three red wines, curated by their staff, who take great pleasure in sharing stories about each one with their guests.

When you look around the winery, you notice that it's very music-centric, with vintage gear displayed, and they have an extensive vinyl collection featuring jazz, rock, heavy metal, current releases and other genres, spanning decades, available to choose from to spin on their turntable. You can also bring in one of your favorites to spin, too.

NABU Wines is also a great venue to host your private event and is perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and company parties.

NABU Wines is located at 2649 Townsgate Road, Suite 200, in Westlake Village. For more information, call 805.778.1100 or visit NabuWines.com.

Cuizon Ballet Centre

Guiding Dancers to Excel

Every dancer has a unique story to tell through movement at Cuizon Ballet Centre, where the founder’s philosophy emphasizes the importance of technique, artistry and personal growth in every student.

“We specialize in Balanchine technique—a method not easily found elsewhere,” says Founder and Teacher Lisa Cuizon.

The Balanchine technique revolutionized ballet with its trademark blend of speed, athleticism and precise musicality. Developed by legendary Choreographer George Balanchine, this approach pushes dancers to move with intense velocity and cover expansive space in minimal time, often employing very deep pliés and extreme extensions.

Key elements include a uniquely open and dynamic port de bras, iconic arabesques with open hips angled toward the audience—giving the illusion of higher leg lines—and distinctive, sometimes dramatic, hand and wrist placements known as “Balanchine Arms.”

The head placement is equally striking, with dancers spiraling from the waist up and presenting their cheekbones as if “asking for a kiss,” creating a three-dimensional elegance designed to connect them directly to the audience. Balanchine’s method demands

both extraordinary strength and flexibility, resulting in performances that are daringly athletic and effortlessly fluid—altering the landscape of American ballet and contemporary dance.

Lisa began her training in a Balanchine-based school in the 1960s, continued at The School of American Ballet at age 15, and was later mentored by Melissa Hayden, a prima ballerina assoluta of New York City Ballet under Balanchine himself. Lisa’s knowledge and firsthand experience provide students with a rare and authentic lineage of training.

Serving ages 7 through adult, Cuizon Ballet Centre’s class sizes allow for highly individualized instruction alongside comprehensive class work.

“We recognize that every body is unique, and we tailor our training to support each dancer’s specific needs,” says Lisa, adding that students receive more than just technical instruction.

They are mentored by Lisa, who guides them in both their dance and academic journeys.

“Our classes are especially sought after for their unique structure rooted in Balanchine technique,” says Lisa, adding that each class begins with Pilates to prepare the body for the demands of ballet, strengthen the core and reduce the risk of injury.

“We also offer Floor Barre, based on the work of Zena Rommett, and a dedicated stretch class to help balance and support the body’s muscular requirements in ballet,” she says.

Flashback to 2001, when Cuizon Ballet Centre was born from Lisa’s desire to pass on her knowledge in its purest form. A group of supportive parents—who witnessed the positive impact of Lisa’s teaching on their children’s bodies, minds and spirits—came together to help fund the school’s opening.

“That moment of belief and collaboration remains a source of inspiration—even 24 years later,” Lisa says.

Lisa also felt compelled to give back. Having had the opportunity to pursue her own dream as a dancer, she was inspired to help other young dancers do the same.

Above all, “our goal is to help every student reach their personal best—whether that means becoming a strong recreational dancer, pursuing higher education with a focus on dance, or stepping directly into the professional dance world,” Lisa adds. “We guide each dancer toward the path that’s right for them.”

FOOD, WINE & CONNECTION:

Life’s Tastiest Ingredients

There’s something magical about gathering around a table with good food, a great glass of wine and even better company. For me, food and wine aren’t just about taste—they’re about experience. They’re about creating moments that linger long after the plates are cleared.

Whether I’m hosting a dinner party, attending a local tasting or supporting one of our amazing community restaurants, I love how food and wine bring people together. There’s a rhythm to it: the clinking of glasses, laughter rising over appetizers and the quiet comfort of shared meals.

I don’t consider myself a food critic or wine expert—I just know what I love. A perfectly grilled piece of salmon with a chilled glass of wine? Yes, please. A decadent chocolate dessert paired with a rich, bold Cabernet? Count me in. I love discovering new local wines and small bites that surprise my taste buds and spark conversation.

Some of my favorite memories have been built around the table. It’s where we pause, reconnect and celebrate even the little things. And let’s be real—when food is made with love, you can taste it.

My tip? Don’t wait for a celebration. Light the candles on a random Tuesday. Try that new recipe you’ve been saving. Open the bottle you were waiting to “save for something special.” This moment is special.

Food and wine are universal languages. They tell stories. They bring people together. And most of all, they nourish more than our bodies—they feed our soul. So pour a glass, pass the bread and savor the moment. Because when we slow down to enjoy good food and good wine, we’re reminded how sweet life really is.

Cheers to flavor, friends and fabulous memories.
