Dining Out is Fun Again!
Restaurants throughout our community were hit harder by the pandemic restrictions than just about any other type of business. Thankfully, the service staff and the kitchens have all come back to what made some of them our favorites.
Robin and I enjoy dining out at least once every weekend. Since I am also a fairly good home chef, our standard is to enjoy restaurants that can serve what I normally prepare and do it differently or better. What is even more fun is enjoying what I cannot do at all.
These restaurants are our favorites—none of them are advertisers. Our choice is based entirely on quality, ambiance and value. While there are many other restaurants in our community to choose from, we believe that these are the very best.
Rustico has been our “go to” Italian trattoria for 20 years. The cioppino, crispy duck and sand dabs are excellent. I often order take-out pizza and spinach salad and hang out in the bar while it’s prepared.
Tuscany is from the same family as Rustico. It is a bit more formal and features their own unique entrees and specials. I enjoy their pheasant in cherry sauce. Robin loves their sausage pasta in a light cream sauce. Locals have enjoyed Tuscany for many years, and the restaurant deserves their loyal patronage.
Stonehaus is a popular casual dining experience in the Conejo Valley. The Mediterranean vineyard-style setting is beautiful and the daily menu offers great choice and quality. Everything from pizza to the caprese sandwich to the tuna salad sandwich that I just enjoyed is excellent. The wine choices are eclectic, interesting and reasonably priced.
Noi Due Trattoria in Agoura is a relatively recent favorite. The chef prepares dishes that are close to what you would enjoy if you were in Italy. The lobster in a fresh tomato sauce served over bucatini was unique and quite delicious. Robin thinks their lasagna is the best in the Conejo Valley (she is an expert on this dish). Accompany your meal with a bottle of Vermentino and you will go home happy. Mangia!!!

What is a Buyer Representation Agreement?
By now you’ve probably read or heard about the significant changes happening in real estate and how those changes will affect home buyers and sellers.
Thanks to the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS ®, the trade association your REALTOR ® belongs to, the process of purchasing a home has recently evolved to provide more clarity and transparency for consumers like you.
One of the new requirements is that buyers must sign a written Buyer Representation Agreement before touring a home with an agent. This is a positive development for both consumers and agents because it facilitates conversations to help homebuyers better understand the process and learn the right questions to ask agents, including what they’re going to do for their clients.
The agreement explains how your REALTOR ® will act as your dedicated and professional guide. It also outlines their ethical and fiduciary duties to represent you to the best of their ability. The terms of the agreement are negotiated between you and your REALTOR ®. Together, you decide how long the representation lasts, and when and if to extend or end the agreement.
In short, the Buyer Representation Agreement:
• Spells out the buyer’s agent’s responsibilities during the time they represent you
• Explains what your agent will do on your behalf, thereby providing more transparency in the transaction
• Records exactly what and how they will be paid for their services
• Ensures that you have an expert on your side as you negotiate the complex process of buying a home
167 THINGS A REALTOR DOES FOR A CLIENT
A buyer’s agent will listen to your needs and preferences, and work with your budget to help you find suitable properties to tour. Because of their knowledge of the local area, these agents are able to narrow down the search and save you valuable time by showing you homes that match your criteria. Their skills and experience provide insights into neighbor-hood trends, property values, and market conditions.
The Buyer Representation Agreement ensures that you and your REALTOR ® are on the same page about the terms of your collaboration. It is designed to facilitate trust and efficiency in what is a hugely complex process. Buying a home is one of the largest, most consequential purchases of your life. It is crucial to have someone on your side who can help you under-stand the legal documents such as purchase agreements, disclosures, and reports. A buyer’s agent ensures that you are aware of your rights and obligations, to protect you from potential legal pitfalls.
Signing a Buyer Representation Agreement is the first step in solidifying a rewarding and productive collaboration with your REALTOR ® .

CELLAR MASTERS:
ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREG BARNETT
CREATING WINE FEATURES OF YOUR DREAMS
Oenophiles (from the Greek oinos, meaning wine, and philia , love) delight in drinking and discussing all things wine. The mark of any true wine connoisseur worth their grapes is their collection of prized wines, a valuable commodity that requires proper storage to preserve until the cork is popped.
Scott Berry founded Cellar Masters in 1990 for just that reason—to create custom wine cellars to store and display their clients’ fine wine collections safely.
“Our sole business is the design, construction and installation of climate-controlled custom wine cellars and wine storage solutions,” says Scott, a licensed contractor whose team has installed more than 2,500 custom wine cellars throughout the region.
As vineyard owners, winemakers and avid wine collectors, the Cellar Masters team applies their knowledge and expertise to create wine features for each client’s specific needs.
“We are devoted to creating beautiful custom wine cellars every step of the way. We know the proper handling, storage and organization of wine, beer and spirits,” says Scott. “We understand our client’s tastes are unique for each job, so we personalize your wine cellar to suit your needs. You dream it, and Cellar Masters will create it!”
Serving both residential and commercial clients, Cellar Masters’ team of design experts and installation professionals work in concert to build custom wine cellars of all shapes and sizes to protect your wine collection and enhance your home or business. From the elegant beauty of a traditional wine cellar to contemporary wine walls, Cellar Masters excels at customizing wine features to fit any space.
“Some people think they don’t have space for a wine cellar, and they are surprised to learn they can take advantage of unused space under a staircase or transform an unused closet into a beautiful and functional wine cellar,” says Scott. “We always love being contacted by our clients to create a wine feature in their homes.”
A recent project involved turning a China hutch nook into a contemporary wine wall. The Cellar Masters team created a 420-bottle capacity wine feature with traditional lower racking made from alder and Vintage View Evolution low-profile upper racks in matte black. The feature has faux stone walls, single deep label view pins for magnums, and a double door locking glass entry.

Protect Your Investment

Cellar Masters offers a wide range of climate-controlled storage solutions, including custom lockers and the ability to receive your wine deliveries at Cellar Masters.
Choose from flexible storage options at a secure storage facility with unit sizes ranging from 12 to 250 cases per locker for all your wine storage needs that are temperature controlled to keep your wine as close to perfect as possible, avoiding vibrations, bright light and temperature swings that can do real damage to delicate and even priceless wine treasures.

NABU
WINES TAKE HOME MULTIPLE MEDALS
Local winery NABU Wines, owned by Greg and Janet Barnett, located in Westlake Village, submitted their handcrafted wines from the Napa Valley, Malibu Coast and Mendocino County to all the county fairs in the southland—the Orange County Fair, Los Angeles International Wine Competition and the Ventura County Fair—for the first time this year for competition. All the wines that were submitted were awarded medals and ribbons. It was good timing for competition with the Olympics going on simultaneously, so they were posting their medal count, too!
NABU Wines
This was the first year the Ventura County Fair had its Wine Competition organized by Steve Holt. Each winery was only able to submit one wine per category.
NABU Submitted their 2020 Malibu Coast Sangiovese – Topanga Canyon “Single Vineyard” in the red category and won “Best Red Wine” and “Best Overall Wine.”
NABU Wines is open 7 days a week. The tasting room opens at 12 p.m. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. Enjoy live music Friday and Saturday nights from 8 to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m.

Obuda Food Tour
CRUISING THE DANUBE With AmaWaterways
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY
BY BEN MALKIN
What better way to explore the former Austro-Hungarian Empire (I’m a history buff) than by skipping planes, trains and automobiles and letting AmaWaterways do the cruising up the Danube!
Before boarding, we explored Budapest on our own. As evident in the photos, we were enchanted with magical evenings near the Danube with the river and beautiful illuminated buildings as the backdrop. When we arrived in Budapest the Obuda Secret Food Tour introduced us to the local fare, and after we had our fill of sausage, schnitzel and goulash, we dined Greek and Italian. Dionysus served up superb Greek food in a riverfront setting. As AmaWaterways schedules a day of tours to the famous landmarks of Budapest, we focused on food and fun while on our own.
FLAVORFUL FARE
Once aboard, we wined and dined like Hapsburg royalty, made new friends and enjoyed the luxurious amenities of the stateof-the-art AmaMagna. Dining on board the AmaMagna was an adventure in 5-star service and cuisine. The main dining room was quite inviting and provided the opportunity to share a table and make new friends, which was exactly what we did. The food, as it always is on AmaWaterways’ cruises, reflected the cuisine of the country and region. If after a few days you have had enough schnitzel and

wild boar, then the ribeye, fish and even the cheeseburgers are outstanding. I also spent plenty of time in their gym working off great breakfasts, lunches and dinners. The walking tours helped as well.
INCREDIBLE CREW
A major shoutout to Captain Niels Springer, Cruise Manager Kriss Stallabrass (Canada/The Netherlands), Hotel Manager Jereno Parena and Executive Chef Ferry Purnama. The AmaMagna crew was beyond wonderful! Handling weather challenges that impacted the itinerary
they turned lemons into lemonade. When we could not reach Vilshofen at the end of the cruise for a special Oktoberfest (due to rain in the Alps that caused silt problems in the Danube), the amazing crew staged our very own Oktoberfest on board—lots of oompah and raised beer steins!
AmaMagna Main Restaurant
HISTORIC DESTINATIONS
The cruise took us to Bratislava, Vienna, Durnstein (home of the world’s best apricot strudel—really!), Saltzburg, Linz and the Czech Republic. The land tours were led by very well-schooled guides. We saw lots of castles and plenty of outrageous Hapsburg extravagance—buildings with hundreds of bedrooms! Who slept there? Half of European royalty maybe? As my remark reveals, if I had lived then, I probably would have been a revolutionary!
For me, the highlight of our cruise was Vienna. AmaWaterways scheduled us for
a chamber orchestra Mozart and Strauss recital accompanied by wonderful dancers. We also went Italian at Fabios, where we enjoyed an incredible and quite pricey dinner that was well worth it; we will always cherish the special memory.
A final thought. Since this is our Food and Wine issue, I focused more on the

food than the Hapsburg castles and other landmarks. Since the regional cuisine, boar, schnitzel, venison and goulash is not my favorite fare, we sought out other choices. In cosmopolitan cities like Vienna and Budapest, that is easy to do. Robin and I always tell our friends about Fabios and Dionysus. However, our next trip may be to Bordeaux, and I will happily dine on all of the French food I can eat. Bon Appetit!

GLADSTONES MALIBU
Since 1972, guests have flocked to Gladstones, the popular beachfront enclave, for celebrity sightings and seafood-centric dishes a few feet from the waves. Devour some of the freshest seafood in LA next to the pounding surf, like Clam Chowder, Coastal Crab Cakes loaded with blue crab claw meat, and a Steamer Pot of littleneck clams in garlic broth. A new elevated menu brings sensational options such as Lobster Risotto topped with a whole cracked lobster tail and Alaskan King Crab Legs ready to be dipped in warm butter. Share a variety of seafood with the Sunset Tower or Malibu Seafood Tower. To avoid crowds, go during the week and add on a beach walk before or after your meal.

For the ultimate open-air ambiance, dine high above LA atop the London Hotel, enveloped by the lush Hollywood Hills and dramatic shimmering skyline. Make a reservation for sunset to watch the landscape hues shapeshift over a 3-course, prix-fixe dinner enhanced with curated LVE Wines by John Legend, inspired by “John’s Favorite Things” from wife Chrissy Teigen’s cookbook, Cravings. Start with French Onion Soup or Short Rib Ravioli before moving onto entrée delights like Spicy Miso Pasta with Manila Clams, Fried Chicken with spicy honey butter, or Beef Wellington for two with Mac and Cheese Gratinee, paired with a bold LVE Cabernet Sauvignon. End with Berry Pavlova enhanced with a glass of LVE French Sparkling Rose. The SLS hotel’s new poolside rooftop restaurant, LaDiDa, with 360-degree LaLa Land views, is perfect for a sunset rendezvous. Settle in atop the stunning open-air roofscape in West Hollywood with a specialty cocktail, like the Mezcal Cheeky Monkey blended with grapefruit juice, Serrano peppers, and in-house made rose, grapefruit, and hibiscus syrup. The menu is conducive to sharing, so begin with steamed Coconut Curry Mussels in a garlic, saffron, coconut lime broth so delicious you'll want to soak not only the grilled bread, but everything else you can think of into the sauce. The perfectly cooked 6 oz filet mignon comes with choice of sauce and side. Consider the creamy skillet of mashed potatoes paired with peppercorn sauce, as you’ll want to dip the meat and top with a lump of heavenly starch puree. Create a Surf and Turf dinner with the Seafood Pasta, made with black squid ink noodles and lobster sauce loaded with clams, calamari, mussels and Caledonian blue shrimp. This $18 dish could easily be $60 somewhere else. Other dishes to try include Pan-Seared Sea Bass, Braised Short Ribs, and Spinach Carbonara Pasta. For a fun surprise, order the honeycomb ice cream dessert. Soon enough, the smoky spicy cocktail, the mod purple lips sculpture in the pool, or the sprawling City of Angels glow will have you exclaiming, “LADiDa!”

spices to the restaurant from Jordan. Featuring one of the most exciting and impressive new menus in town, the art deco ambiance is accompanied by a sunset view to enhance the Jordanian flavor experience. Share a Mezze Platter for 2 to 4 with smoked eggplant, aerated hummus, avocado crème fraiche, labneh, tapenade and wood-fired pita. Devour marinated Kohlrabi (a cabbage-like root vegetable) or Warak Dawali (fresh stuffed grape leaves with rice, lamb and tomato). Don’t miss entrees like the incredibly satisfying Lamb Shank atop rice with goat’s milk and crunchy toasted almonds, or Whole Grilled Sea Bass with lemon chermoula topped with micro dill. A cacophony of Middle Eastern flavors, the cocktails are just as exciting. Try the Layla Old Fashioned, made with a pistachio butter-washed wild turkey bourbon served with a side of feta, or the Matahari Milk Punch, featuring cognac blended with Chai-infused sweet vermouth and sage smoke. Make sure to head to the roof before dinner for sunset drinks at the new Coco Club, which old time Angelenos might remember as the former Shangri-La Hotel’s hotspot rooftop, one of the tallest in Santa Monica.

Mizel Estate Wines:
You are traveling down an oak-lined road on a sunlit afternoon, passing bucolic farms and ranches, on a quest for fine wines. You enter a breathtaking private estate, with a stunning vineyard surrounded by majestic mountains, lush gardens and open vistas.
You have discovered Mizel Estate Wines, nestled in the heart of Hidden Valley in Thousand Oaks, where you’ll receive a warm welcome, exceptional local wines and unexpected delights.
PERFECT PROVENANCE
The name “Mizel” blends the names of the owners, Michael and Zelene Fowler. The Fowlers launched Mizel Estate Wines with the goal of creating world-class wines. They were also inspired to use the bounty of the estate to help others achieve their dreams.
In 2014, they assembled a spirited team to establish the vineyard and help bring their vision for the wines to fruition. They partnered with Guillaume Fabre, a renowned, sixth-generation French winemaker and vigneron, who helped them select and establish the French varietals that would thrive on the estate and began making 100% estategrown wines. The first vintage debuted in 2016.
Mizel Estate Wines are grown on a 38-acre estate in the Malibu Coast AVA (American Viticultural Area). The geography of Mizel Estate, located on a fertile valley floor protected by mountains, provides ideal growing conditions for exceptional fruit. The grapes bask in the valley’s warmth, yet are cooled by ocean breezes, which allows them to retain their acidity.
WILD OF SPIRIT AND WARM OF HEART
EXACTING ARTISTRY
Mizel Estate Wines is a boutique, limitedproduction winemaker, focused on quality.
“As Mizel Estate Wines are 100% estate grown, the Mizel team has control over the entire winemaking process, which allows us to consistently produce superb wines,” says Michael Fowler, adding, “Only the finest, hand-harvested grapes are used to make the wines.”
The vines are nurtured throughout the growing season under the direction of Estate Manager Hector Ambriz, who leads an experienced vineyard team that builds protective canopies, prunes the vines and drops excess clusters to concentrate the flavors in the remaining grapes.
Harvest takes place in early September through early October. Fabre and Ambriz carefully monitor the grapes to determine when to harvest. Grape samples are collected and checked twice weekly, until they reach the BRIX level (dissolved sugar level) Fabre prefers.
“All of Mizel’s grape varietals mature at different rates and each one is harvested at its peak,” notes Wine Operations Director Lexi Nardoni.
As soon as the grapes are harvested, they are immediately driven to Paso Robles to be received by Mizel’s Winemaker, Guillaume Fabre.
BEAUTIFULLY BLENDED
The winemaking commences in Paso Robles with the crush and fermentation. Afterward, Fabre ages each varietal in premier French oak for 18 months.
When the aging is complete, the Fowlers meet with Fabre to taste wine from 30 to 40 barrels and decide which ones to blend. This passionate winemaking team combines their expertise and perspectives to skillfully blend six distinct French varietals from different types of barrels to achieve the pleasing and harmonious results notable in these superb wines.
When you taste Mizel Estate Wines’ opulent red wines, you’ll find they dazzle the palate with lingering flavors of fruit and spice.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah contribute their alluring profiles to Mizel Estate’s signature wines— First Impression Bordeaux Blend, Easy to Please Grenache and Smooth Touch Syrah.

When you join the Mizel Family, you step away from pretentious, hectic city life and enter a world apart, where you’ll find outstanding wines, genuine people and a whole lot of remarkable fun.
COME RAISE A GLASS
The Mizel Estate team believes that wine is a beautiful journey filled with joy, self-discovery and connection. It’s a journey they love sharing with their Wine Club members and guests.
On the fourth Saturday of the month, guests are invited to Mizel’s private estate for an elegant afternoon wine tasting in their breathtaking vineyard. Guests mix and mingle with fellow wine enthusiasts on their stunning outdoor terrace while enjoying a flight of Mizel’s luxury wines.
Mizel Wine Club members receive first access and special pricing for Mizel’s fine wines, invitations to exclusive member-only events, exceptional privileges to enjoy gorgeous Mizel Estate for annual visits and private intimate events, plus the ability to host friends at the estate.
Guests are also welcomed throughout the year for a series of delightful experiences, such as wine and art workshops among the vines and yoga in the vineyard surrounded by fresh air filled with the scent of roses.
INDULGE IN MIZEL
Mizel Estate Wines are available for purchase online or by becoming a Mizel Estate Wine Club member.
Ready to try one of Mizel’s lush, complex reds? Gather with friends on Stonehaus’ lovely patio at the Westlake Village Inn and savor superb fromage and charcuterie complemented by Mizel Estate Wines’ elegant First Impression Bordeaux Blend.
Or head over to Pearl District in Westlake Village, where you can pair exquisite, innovative cuisine with Mizel wine. Peyman Afshar, owner of Pearl District, favors Mizel’s Easy to Please Grenache.
“It’s made locally and rivals Paso Robles Grenache. It’s an elegant and approachable wine that’s easy to drink,” Afshar notes.
CARING MISSION
At its core, Mizel Estate Wines is purpose-driven, donating a portion of wine proceeds to the Mizel Family Foundation, which provides educational and career opportunities for individuals with unique abilities who experience special needs.
The focus of the Mizel Family Foundation is to provide uniquelyabled Mizel Professionals with real-world work experience, as well as the pride of receiving wages for the work performed. Mizel Professionals have gained experience learning to harvest grapes, working with customers and local businesses at Mizel’s Pumpkin Patch Harvest Event and are now expanding their skills by taking culinary classes in preparation for selling their creations at this year’s Pumpkin Patch Harvest Event.

Food for Thought
ARTICLE BY KIM PAGANO
As the saying goes, “You are what you eat,” but are you also what you drink?
How do you acquire a taste for food or drinks? Is it part of your chemistry or what you were taught to eat as a kid? Maybe it’s influenced by where you’re born or by what’s available to you? Interestingly, these are probably all correct answers.
Are you a picky eater? Are you a bland eater or are you one that loves zest and zing in every taste? I think that would be me. I love sauces, so that I can have a zing in everything I eat. What about you?
When it comes to drinks, do you prefer beer, wine or hard liquor? Do you like to taste the alcohol? Do you like to taste the flavor, or do you prefer it to not be noticeable?
For my wine drinkers, my husband and I went to a great Cabernet party. It was interesting to me that so many really had no understanding of what tasted good, or even more what was inexpensive or what was pricey. Are you a wine snob? I mean that in a good way. I have a few wines that I love and probably need to venture out. I personally like anything that is bubbly. Celebrating with Champagne is always good.
Learning to pair your food with your drinks is a whole other talent. Great food is easy for my palate, but picking out a drink that matches seems a bit more challenging. Whatever you're eating or drinking, make sure you're enjoying it, as why eat or drink something that doesn't bring you joy?
The same goes for anything you do in life. Surround yourself with good people, good times and good food. Remember food is the way to most of our hearts and leaves us with lots of fond memories for years to come. Enjoy, my friends!
