Wow!! It’s Been 10 Years!

Ten years ago, in August 2015, we published our first issue of Conejo Valley Lifestyle—that makes this issue our 10-Year Anniversary issue.

The big question then was, “Will we still be in business 6 months later?” YEP…still standing and thriving and loving our Conejo Valley and Santa Rosa Valley communities. We have weathered fires, Covid and some personal health challenges. I’m stubborn and Robin may be petite, but she is really strong. Our wonderful editor, Tracy Marcynzsyn, and the team at Lifestyle Publications stood by us and provided incredible support and professionalism.

Our marketing partners, Rosemary Allison, Montecito Bank & Trust, The Lake Avenue Group at Morgan Stanley, The Sofa Guy, Conejo Hearing, Aldik Home, Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center, NABU Wines, Oaks Christian School, Pacific Festival Ballet/California Dance Theatre, Cat in a Hammock, Luxury Destination Concierge, Cellar Masters and Thousand Oaks Fireside, have been with us for all or most of those years. We thank all of you as well as our newer partners for helping to make Conejo Valley Lifestyle and CityLifestyle.com/conejovalley a better magazine and website.

This issue focuses on kids, schools and pets. Regarding schools, Robin and I are now old enough to be focused on our grandchildren—four of hers and three of mine. They are navigating everything from preparing to graduate college to finding their way from elementary school while transitioning to middle school. All of that can make me feel really old or just happy to be around to enjoy it. I’m happy.

The schools in our community, public and private, are outstanding. Read about them in this issue. There is also a dandy bunch of kids who are future cheerleaders while making community service a priority as well. Check them out.

Pets are very special to almost all of us. We introduce Z Dog Training Academy in this issue. Although we are “cat people,” there is no info on training cats, because as you all know, they train us. We’re “staff.”

Thank you from Ben and Robin for the past 10 years. Here’s looking at 10 more!

ARTFULLY Empowering Students

SHI YOUNG KIM NAMED VENTURA COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Walking into Shi Young Kim’s classroom, you will witness a hub of activity and learning: students sitting in the back of the room painting self-portraits on their easels or water coloring at their desks, some on computers researching or journaling, and some gluing objects for their found art sculpture. All over the room, calligraphy blooms, fiber arts weave and wires melt on stained glass. You’ll find students in small groups working collaboratively, brainstorming on their next pieces and even helping clean up together, washing brushes and scrubbing color palettes.

“Although my room may seem tumultuous, I have intentionally nurtured an environment of creativity, active engagement and thoughtful inquiry,” says Kim, who currently serves as the Visual & Performing Arts Department Chair at Rio Mesa High School in the Oxnard Union High School District.

“You will find me wandering through the room, meeting with students individually, sometimes making small talk or giving informal critiques,” she continues. “This type of instruction, tailored and differentiated for individuals, is more meaningful for my pedagogical philosophy than speaking to students in a whole group setting.”

By providing one-on-one instruction, she becomes acquainted with each of her 180 students on a deeper level.

“As we create, learn principles of design and theory, and produce visual art, we share stories of family, activities and encounters from the weekend,” she says. “Sometimes I share photos of my two cats doing silly things. Creating art means taking risks, and it demands vulnerability.”

With a 25-year career marked by creativity, leadership and dedication to student growth, Kim has inspired countless students through a dynamic blend of traditional and digital visual arts instruction. Because of this, Dr. César Morales, Ventura County Superintendent of Schools, has announced Kim as the 2025 Ventura County Teacher of the Year.

Kim leads an expansive program that includes various courses such as International Baccalaureate Visual Arts, Calligraphy, Studio Art, Life Drawing and Digital Photography. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of process over product and encourages students to explore their identities and creative voices.

“We are incredibly proud to honor Shi Young Kim as the 2025 Ventura County Teacher of the Year,” says Dr. Morales. “Her ability to empower students through the arts, while also mentoring colleagues and leading schoolwide initiatives, represents the very best of what teaching can be.”

Kim played a pivotal role in establishing the prestigious International Baccalaureate art program at Rio Mesa. The program helps students develop cultural awareness and critical thinking skills through visual media such as painting and sculpture.

“Her students are consistently challenged to push their creative boundaries, engage in deep self-reflection, and explore global and personal themes through their artwork,” says Rio Mesa High School Principal, Gary Peterson.

Students describe Ms. Kim as a compassionate and motivating mentor.

“She regularly checked in when I felt there was no path ahead,” says Madison, one of Kim’s students. “Her belief in my potential, especially during times when I doubted myself, kept me going.”

Kim's classroom is known for being dynamic and cultivating an inclusive atmosphere. Her program goes beyond grades and rubrics and can be best measured by the growth and connections her students build.

With a broad spectrum of students in her classroom, she ensures that each one feels capable of meaningful artistic and academic growth. Building a space where encouragement and belonging are key,

she is invested in her students and exemplifies how high-quality arts instruction can transform students’ academic and personal journeys.

“I think teaching is not an individual ‘sport’ and it's not bound by four classroom walls,” emphasizes Kim, adding that she tries to expand student learning outside the classroom by being present in their daily lives.

“I aim to build joyful and meaningful environments, building positive relationships with students so that they have a similar relationship with their peers—that will transfer into their art,” she says. “Being a teacher involves collaborating with other teachers—usually your best friends—and discussing news and events that happen in the classroom and/or on campus. It’s also about building culture and rapport with key players: administrators, teachers, parents and students.”

Kim is now eligible to represent Ventura County in the 2025 California Teacher of the Year competition.

Meanwhile, “I want to continue learning and continue to make an impact on my students, school and community.”

She adds that she always tells her students that the journey is more important than the final product, “and it’s the same in my educational journey. I want to continue to ‘be all in’ in my students’ lives.”

“As we create, learn principles of design and theory, and produce visual art, we share stories of family, activities and encounters from the weekend... Creating art means taking risks.”

Oaks Christian School

Oaks Christian School begins the next chapter of the school’s illustrious history with the start of the 2025-26 school year. Having just graduated its largest senior class in June 2025—296 seniors—Oaks Christian continues its tradition of academic excellence, artistic expression and athletic distinction.

Established in 2000 with an inaugural class of just 73 students, this fall over 1,700 students in Grades 4-12 will proudly call themselves OCS Lions!

The trajectory and growth of the school in a short time has been nothing short of phenomenal. In 2002-2004, the school established itself as an athletic powerhouse, domineering several CIF championships across multiple sports. Subsequent years saw continued athletic success.

The opening of the state-of-the-art Bedrosian Performing Arts Pavilion in 2007 elevated the performing arts to the national stage. Visual arts followed shortly thereafter with multiple regional and national awards.

In the area of academics, Oaks Christian has been a vanguard, starting first with its stellar high school offerings, and adding a model middle school program in 2009. Five years later Academy V for fifth grade students was launched.

Additionally, the school has added five signature institutes: engineering, arts and innovation, global leadership, Bible and discipleship, and the newest, health science, which launched this past school year. Each institute provides specialized pathways for students to gain an advantage in those fields, be mentored and taught master classes by industry professionals, and have internship opportunities.

A crowning achievement was the expansion of the International Student Program with the opening of a modern residential dorm that welcomed 40 students in 2019 but now will house close to 100 international and domestic students. The dorm distinguishes Oaks Christian as one of the few Christian secondary schools nationwide to have both a day and residential boarding program.

Santa Monica College

Santa Monica College unveiled its newest satellite campus in February 2023, and it has been an awesome journey for the campus to explore the needs of this community and serve with the academic excellence that is the college’s trademark.

The location of the campus is ideal—sitting in the heart of Malibu, across from Legacy Park and right next to the Malibu Library. Nestled between the green hills and the Pacific Ocean, this two-story state-of-the-art building features an innovative architectural design creating an open and expansive learning environment that is truly unique. Nevertheless, building and design alone do not a campus make—it is the faculty, students and staff that seamlessly make this campus a home to many who came to its doorsteps, seeking to fulfill their educational goals, for learning that could be lifelong or life-changing.

What sets this satellite campus apart from all other five campuses at Santa Monica College is that this campus has a varied sampling of all four type of classes that are offered by the college: for-credit classes that can be used toward an Associate degree or transfer to a 4-year college, noncredit classes for short-term vocational and workforce preparation and certificates, emeritus classes for older students seeking self-enrichment, and community education classes that are fee-based and open to everyone.

Come and experience this one-of-a-kind campus and immerse yourself in the joy of learning surrounded by natural beauty. Easy to access with ample parking on site, with academic excellence to boot, it is hard not to fall in love with this new space of learning and the people that fill it.

Oaks Christian Students Design Firefighting Robot

After 3 years of development, students in the Oaks Christian School Institute of Engineering debuted the HydroRover—a fully remote-controlled firefighting robot designed to operate inside residential homes.

The launch of the rover comes on the heels of the devastating fires that affected the Pacific Palisades community nearby, as well as the communities of Altadena, adjacent to Pasadena, through the Eaton Fire this past January.

Engineered with mobility and safety in mind, the HydroRover fits through standard residential doorways and can be navigated remotely, allowing it to enter dangerous environments where human access is limited or unsafe. The robot uses FLIR optics to deliver targeted compressed air foam to the source of a blaze, helping reduce fire spread and potential damage.

This student-built innovation addresses a critical gap in fire response capabilities, especially for volunteer fire stations, many of which lack the equipment or personnel to enter burning structures safely.

The inspiration behind this project was to assist firefighters in rural areas. The fire department has a protocol for going into buildings, two in/two out. Meaning, in order to send anyone into a burning building, they need two people on the outside to be able to send two inside. The ratio can increase of course, three in, three out, for example, but they can't go less than two.

“This poses a unique challenge for volunteer firefighters in rural areas (which turns out to be most of the United States) because they need four people plus all their gear before they can move into a building,” shared rising senior Tyler Lehman, one of the student leads on the project. Co-leads were Ivana Malenkovic and Greyson Westmore.

“This can be a big challenge for a volunteer force because they're coming from their day-to-day jobs and lives. So, the goal of our robot is to be the first one in the building. Something that can be easily put in the back of a pickup truck and sent in with no gear, or even the need to open a fire hydrant,” he expounded.

There were two main teams: the chasse team and the software/hardware team. Lehman was on the

software team, and they experienced a lot of setbacks. The learning curve was probably the hardest part because they inherited designs and systems from previous years' classes, so they had to familiarize themselves with what they had to work with before improving upon it.

The HydroRover offers a safer, more efficient option to support interior firefighting in high-risk scenarios. The project reflects the growing focus at Oaks Christian on real-world problem solving through STEM education.

“I love this invention because it seriously has real world applications. I am making a final version of this project as my senior capstone. I hope to bring it to the field and help a lot of people. I think firefighters could really benefit from this project and I think it could be integrated into a fire department seamlessly,” Lehman said.

Students collaborated over several academic years to design, test and refine the HydroRover as part of the school’s vehicular engineering program, applying classroom principles to build a tool with meaningful impact.

Engineering Institute Director Greg Smith, who lost his home and business in the fires of 2020 in the Sierras, said, "I knew we had to do something to use the loss to motivate innovation and solutions for our communities. I just used the skills and resources we had in the school to enable our students to make a difference."

CHEER ELITE ANGELS

INSPIRING YOUTH THROUGH COMPETITIVE CHEER, COMMUNITY SERVICE & CONFIDENCE

Cheerleading is a vastly popular sport in the U.S.—with over 3.9 million participants across the country in 2024. This competitive sport involves a series of gymnastics moves, jumps, tumbling, pyramids and dance. As with many competitive sports, cheerleading provides physical and mental benefits for youth participants.

Westlake Village resident Eva Rankin founded Cheer Elite Angels last year to offer youth ages 6 to 14 the opportunity to participate in cheerleading.

“I wanted to give kids a chance to experience the world of competitive cheer while still having time for other interests,” says Eva, who manages and directs the program along with classes at Overtime Athletics, an afterschool enrichment program.

“Every Cheer Elite Angel learns valuable life lessons: teamwork, goal setting, perseverance and confidence. We also encourage being active members of the community.”

“Many of our athletes also participate in club soccer, club volleyball, dance and gymnastics. This program gives them a taste of competitive cheerleading—and once they get that taste, there’s no turning back!”

Eva’s love for the sport has been a driving force throughout her cheer coaching career, which began 14 years ago.

“Watching my athletes grow and fall in love with the sport has been an incredible experience,” she says. “Many have gone on to cheer in high school and beyond—something that fills me with pride.”

The importance of giving back to the community is central to the many lessons she hopes to instill in the athletes.

“Every Cheer Elite Angel learns valuable life lessons: teamwork, goal setting, perseverance and confidence,” notes Eva. “We also encourage being active members of the community. I encourage my high school girls to coach too, which I think is important in today’s teen society.”

This year, Cheer Elite Angels teamed up with the “Boo2Bullying” campaign, promoting their platform via social media to raise awareness for mental health and anti-bullying. And after the L.A. fires, the team wrote letters to local firefighters and families of those affected.

“Our athletes learn that strength isn't just physical—it's emotional and mental too.”

As a Cheer Elite Angel, youth are encouraged to be enthusiastic, teamoriented, hardworking and willing to try new things and make new friends. The team’s dedication has earned them several recent accomplishments.

“We’ve participated in cheer clinics, our seasonal showcase and two competitions. Our first was at Knott’s Berry Farm, where we took first place in our division!” she notes.

“The second was a virtual competition through World Class Cheerleading, where we also placed first and received the Showstopper Award for choreography and performance,” shares Eva, expressing her appreciation for her amazing coaching team. "We bring in expert coaches with various backgrounds of cheer, dance, tumbling and stunt to make our performance quality top-notch."

She also expresses appreciation for participants’ parents.

“I am incredibly grateful to have such an amazing group of cheer parents that supported me and believed in the Cheer Angels! I’ve had the privilege of helping shape young lives and creating years of joyful memories for families and cheerleaders. To me, that’s what makes it all worthwhile."

JOIN THE TEAM!

Athletes of all experience levels are welcome to participate in a Cheer Clinic, Sunday, August 24, at a local gym in Thousand Oaks.

With the goal of building two or three teams based on age and skill level, Cheer Elite Angels invites participants to their tryout clinic where they will learn a cheer and dance routine, demonstrate jumps and show any tumbling skills they may have. No experience is necessary!

“We believe everyone should have the opportunity to shine!” says Coach Eva.

For more information and to register, follow Cheer Elite Angels on Instagram at  @cheereliteangels ( instagram.com/cheereliteangels) or visit otathletics.com/nwla.

Z DOG Training Academy

PERSONALIZED COACHING FOR REAL DOGS AND REAL LIFE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANABEL DFLUX

Z Dog Training Academy is more than just a dog training service—it’s a heartled practice rooted in trust, connection and transformation.

“We offer private training, structured day training and family-style Board & Train programs designed to fit real life and real families,” says Owner Heather Mazahri. Specializing in behavior modification and family-focused coaching, Z Dog Training’s experienced staff helps dogs and their people build calm, confident and connected lives together. Every training plan is personalized to the dog and the household.

“Whether you have 5 minutes a day or a full hour, we’ll meet you where you are to create lasting change,” says Heather, who took some time out of her busy day to share about her business with CVL readers.

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING READERS SHOULD KNOW?

We’re in this with you. We care deeply about your dog and your experience as their person. This isn’t about quick fixes or suppressing behavior—we go to the root. We help dogs feel safe and understood, and we empower families to be part of the solution.

The dog training industry is unregulated, but we hold ourselves to the highest standard. I’m a certified professional dog trainer who invests in continuing education every year—not because I have to, but because my

clients deserve that level of dedication. The trust families place in us isn’t taken lightly—it’s an honor.

WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS?

We work with families who see their dogs as part of the family—busy professionals, parents and people navigating complex behaviors. Whether it’s a new puppy, a reactive case or a highdrive working breed, we help dog guardians create calm, confidence and structure without sacrificing compassion.

WHAT DO PEOPLE VALUE MOST ABOUT YOUR SERVICES?

Clients say they feel seen, supported and never judged. They love how tailored and transparent the process is. For many, it’s the first time they feel like someone truly understands their dog— and gives them hope. Beyond the results, they appreciate how we build trust, shift energy and guide both ends of the leash toward a more connected life.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

DO YOU HAVE A MOTTO OR WORDS TO LIVE BY?

“Progress, not perfection.” In a world obsessed with quick fixes, I invite families to lean into the experience— the learning, the setbacks and the wins. Growth takes time, trust and compassion—for our dogs and ourselves. When we release the need to be perfect and stay present in the process, real transformation begins.

“Z Dog Training Academy is a reflection of everything we believe in: kindness, second chances and the incredible bond between humans and animals.”

I was a wild-hearted kid walking a hard path when I found dog rescue—and everything changed. In my early teens, I became an adoption coordinator and quickly saw how many dogs were returned for behavior issues I was already helping solve intuitively. I worked with rescue and family dogs through high school, graduated and then got certified in 2012, and turned that passion into a profession. Now, I help others experience the same healing and purpose dogs gave me.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED OVER THE YEARS?

People don’t just need training—they need hope. They need to know their dog isn’t broken and they’re not failing. The most meaningful progress happens when we lead with grace, curiosity and compassion.

ANYTHING ELSE TO SHARE?

I’m a mom of two, in recovery and someone who’s found healing through dogs. My partner, Christian Bosson—a Navy veteran— helps run the business with me. We’re rooted in family, both ours and yours. Z Dog Training Academy is a reflection of everything we believe in: kindness, second chances and the incredible bond between humans and animals.

Girls’ Getaway

ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Discover Your Bliss at Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa

It’s a woman’s nature to care for and nurture the people she loves, from kids and spouses to friends, extended family and even pets. So many women spend the majority of their time and energy selflessly caring for others, leaving little, if any, time for themselves. Savvy women know there comes a time when they must prioritize tending to their own self-care and filling their own cup. Getting away from daily responsibilities, chores and routines to take a break and focus on rest and relaxation is one of the best gifts women can give to themselves, and everyone in their life benefits from their time away, as they return refreshed, renewed and re-energized.

Luckily, an amazing mecca for retreating in luxury is found just a few hours’ drive from the Conejo Valley. Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa in Avila Beach, just south of San Luis Obispo, is a magical oasis made for moments like these. Load up the ladies and head north on the 101 to leave your worries behind (they’ll be there when you return!) and soak up some healing vibes in the lovely Shangri la-esque landscape of Sycamore Mineral Springs.

With 24 private open-air hot tubs fed by mineral-rich waters dotting the wooded hillside, this idyllic location offers the perfect opportunity for a relaxing one-hour escape from it all if time is short. One dip will have you hooked and checking your calendar to book a few days to stay at the resort, where every room comes with its own private hot tub to soak away all your stress.

The well-appointed rooms include big comfy beds with cozy comforters and lots of fluffy pillows, as well as special sweet-smelling lotions, shampoos and luxurious amenities. Gal pals going as a group can opt for the 2-bedroom bungalow, complete with a living room, kitchen, two full baths and an outdoor private hot tub overlooking the scenic beauty of

nature in the backyard. On a recent girls’ trip, we were welcomed to this serene abode by abundant hillside wildlife, including wild turkeys—with babies in tow and a magnificent male strutting his feathers in an impressive fan—a doe and her two spotted fawns, skunks, lizards and sparrows, all adding to the fairytale feel of the surreal surroundings.

We didn’t waste any time filling up the outdoor tub with fresh mineral-rich water and immersing ourselves in the health-giving, sore muscle-relieving, soul-soothing, stress-melting hot springs for hours. If it weren’t for the rumblings of hunger in our bellies, we may have spent the entire trip soaking in the hot tub! But alas, we emerged from our first soak already feeling years younger and rejuvenated as we headed over the picturesque walking bridge to the Secret Garden.

GARDEN OF DELIGHTS

Sounds of live music greeted us as we approached the Secret Garden, tucked into an idyllic outdoor setting located in easy walking distance from the main resort. Sunflowers and vegetables graced the giant garden encircling the stage, tables and food trucks, where we ordered specialty wood-fired pizzas made fresh onsite and some local libations. Swaying to the music, we enjoyed watching the enthusiastic dancers while sipping on ciders and relaxing under the shade of stately sycamore trees towering above us toward the clear blue sky. The delicious Ricottaroni pizza with pepperoni, roasted garlic, house tomato sauce and ricotta cheese and The Sycamore, with white sauce, mozzarella cheese, chicken, spinach, onions and mushrooms, filled our tummies, leaving us with plenty of leftovers for a late-night snack. We caught a glimpse of the neighboring Bob Jones Trail leading to Avila Beach before heading back over the bridge to check out the boutique and gift shop.

Aligned with the peaceful aura of the property, the boutique features an abundant selection of Zen-inspired items, from Buddhas and wind chimes, to elegant sun catchers, jewelry, lotions, perfumes, clothing and more. One visit was not enough to fully explore the boutique’s beautiful creations; we made several return trips to find unique gifts for loved ones and special souvenirs for ourselves.

After an early evening soak in the mineral-rich waters, we ordered room service from the Gardens of Avila Restaurant, where breakfast, lunch and dinner options abound. The Shrimp and Pancetta Pasta served with lemon garlic cream and baby spinach did not disappoint, and in fact, disappeared rather quickly as we feasted on the finest fettucine pasta made in house. The extensive menu boasts a wide array of homegrown and locally sourced ingredients, including organic veggies from their onsite Chef’s Garden, fresh fish—try the Sea Scallops, Pacific Halibut or Grilled Salmon—as well as certified grass-fed Angus Fillet Mignon, Braised Short Ribs, PanSeared free-range chicken and so much more.

MARICHU CORTES’ PATIENT-CENTERED

APPROACH AT MC AESTHETICS

MC Aesthetics in Thousand Oaks provides personalized care and utilizes cutting-edge technology to ensure your comfort and satisfaction with every service.

“MC Aesthetics provides empathetic love, care, great customer service, comfort and results—our clients are not numbers but family and friends,” says Marichu Cortes, founder and owner of MC Aesthetics.

Marichu’s vast experience originates from bedside nursing that arose from several prestigious hospitals, including Cedars Sinai, St. Luke’s Mercy and St. Mary’s. She has more than 15 years of experience in the medical field and patient care, as well as more than 7 years of experience in injectables, lasers and microneedling. Known for her “gentle touch,” she provides her clients with the confidence of safety, comfort and beautiful results.

Opened in March 2023, MC Aesthetics is about “all the love and sincerity that you put into the work that I humbly love to do for all my clients to make them feel beautiful, confident and positively empowered,” says Marichu, adding that MC Aesthetics is known for exceptional customer service, attention to detail, safety, comfort and results.

Signature treatments for the face include chemical peels which remove damaged skin to reveal a youthful, glowing complexion; microneedling, which stimulates collagen and elastin production to treat skin concerns like uneven skin tone, scars and pigmentation; wrinkle relaxers that soften movement in muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles; volumizer, which smooths lines and creases while adding fullness; and facial contouring, which removes fat or adds volume to contour the face.

MC Aesthetics also offers body sculpting, which freezes or melts away fat cells for a more toned physique.

Since the practice was established, it has received an “outstanding” rating on Yelp, “and the Westlake Village Mayor (Ray Pearl) provided an award for our grand opening,” Marichu says.

Clients give MC Aesthetics rave reviews as well.

Linda Miyahira says Marichu “is the best esthetician I have ever had…her professional background and experience paired with her compassion and gentle process is exceptional. She goes out of her way to make sure I am doing well after each procedure.”

Client Sarina Singhi praised Marichu for her injection skills.

“She does a great job, and causes a lot less pain than the dermatologist I used to go to. Plus, she and her staff give great service.”

MC Aesthetics “is a great place to have any type of cosmetic procedures done,” says client Julie Reyes. “I don’t live in Thousand Oaks any longer, but when I visit, this office will be a must-stop for me.”

Marichu’s dream “was always to have my own practice where I can share my love for what I do with my clients.”

Her ultimate goal is to deliver safe, effective and minimally invasive aesthetic treatments that prioritize client comfort and natural-looking results.

SANTIAGO & COMPANY Catering:

WHERE FLAVOR MEETS CELEBRATION

Based in Southern California, Santiago & Company Catering LLC brings elevated farm-to-table and globally inspired cuisine to events of all sizes. From weddings and corporate gatherings to private chef dinners and culinary workshops, Santiago & Company specializes in creating unforgettable dining experiences. With an emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients, bold flavors and collaborative planning, this catering company blends artistry with heartfelt hospitality—making every occasion feel personal and meaningful.

Here, Founder Anna Santiago shares about what makes her business so special.

Q: What’s the most important thing people should know about your business?

We’re more than just caterers—we’re collaborators in creating memorable experiences. From the initial consultation to the final bite, everything is crafted with intention, care and creativity. We want our clients to feel relaxed and taken care of so they can focus on enjoying the moment.

“We treat every event, big or small, as an opportunity to connect, celebrate and create something meaningful together.”

Q: What do clients love most about your service?

They consistently praise our personalized service, exceptional flavors and seamless execution. Many say our food feels both refined and comforting—it’s thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented and always a crowd-pleaser. We hear often that the food becomes one of the highlights of the event, which is a huge compliment.

Q: How did you get started in the culinary world?

I started at 19 as a server at a local sushi spot in Northern California. That early exposure sparked something in me. By the time I was 26, I had moved to Southern California, enrolled in culinary school and was working in restaurants. My first real culinary home was Nobu Malibu, where I gained hands-on experience with Japanese technique. That foundation, combined with classic French training, helped shape my culinary identity.

Q: What do you enjoy most about running your business?

I love the artistic and creative expression that comes through food, but more than that, I love the joy it brings to others. Seeing clients truly relax, enjoy their guests and savor a beautiful meal—it’s incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about cooking; it’s about creating a space for people to connect.

Q: What sets Santiago & Company apart from other catering companies?

Our menus are chef-driven and globally inspired, with a Southern California twist. We bring in flavors from around the world while keeping things seasonal and locally sourced whenever possible. But what really sets us apart is our warm, collaborative approach—we treat every event, big or small, as an opportunity to connect, celebrate and create something meaningful together.

Q: Do you have any upcoming events or specials?

Yes! We’re planning a summer tasting event to debut our 2025 Canapé & Small Bites Menu. It’s a great way for potential clients and food lovers to sample our new offerings and see what we’re all about. The date is still to be announced, so we encourage people to check our website and social media for updates.

Q: What are your future business goals?

I’d love to open a venue space that hosts a supper club and also offers affordable multicourse dining

experiences for those who might not typically access them. I’m also passionate about building community events and workshops that focus on food, nutrition and entertaining at home. It’s about making food both accessible and educational while still keeping it fun.

Q: What kind of training and experience do you bring to the table?

I completed culinary school at LA Mission College, earning a degree in Food Service Management & Culinary Arts. My externships were at The Tuck Room Tavern by Chef Sherry Yard and Norah in West Hollywood. I’ve also volunteered at LA Food & Wine Festivals to expand my culinary perspective. My time with private chefs and high-end clients gave me a deeper understanding of the world of catering—and helped bring Santiago & Company to life.

Q: What have you learned from running this business?

That food is just the beginning. Over the years, I’ve come to realize this work is really about human connection. A thoughtfully prepared meal can make people feel seen, celebrated and cared for. Listening, adapting and staying purpose-driven are just as important as the food itself. Every event teaches me something new—about culture, community and the power of gathering.

Q: Tell us a bit about your life outside of work.

I’ve been married for 17 years and we have three amazing kids, ages 10, 6 and 2. We’ve lived in Simi Valley for a decade now. As a family, we love art, music, movies, road trips, being outdoors and we’re huge animal lovers. All of that inspiration shows up in my cooking, too.

There’s no doubt that pets bring joy to our lives. They greet us at the door, love us unconditionally and never judge us for staying in pajamas all day. For many, pets are their “fur babies”—and rightfully so. But raising children? That’s a whole different journey—one that’s deeper, louder and filled with surprises you never saw coming.

Having a pet teaches responsibility, but having a child teaches patience, resilience and the art of loving with your whole heart, even on the hardest days.

Pets don’t ask you lots of questions before a huge event and every day. They don’t outgrow their shoes every 3 months or leave glitter in the carpet. They also won’t call you “Mom” or “Dad,” or sneak into your bed after a nightmare just needing to feel safe and give you the best hugs. Children grow into their own minds, hearts and dreams; as parents, we have the privilege (and the challenge) of helping them get there, giving them wings to fly.

Yes, pets give us comfort, but kids give us legacy. They stretch us, surprise us and teach us more about life and ourselves than we could ever imagine. Of course, homes with both pets and kids know the best of both worlds: snuggles and stories, tail wags and toddler giggles. It’s a beautiful mess of muddy paws, spilled juice and unconditional love. Whether your home is filled with barking, giggling or both, know that each has its own special magic.

With love, Kim Pagano
