“Riffing” SINCE THIS MONTH’S ISSUE IS OUR MEN’S ISSUE, THIS DEPARTMENT IS ALWAYS ASSIGNED TO ME. I will take the prerogative of doing whatever I please, which is riffing on whatever comes to mind. Kind of a jazz improvisation that becomes a momentary theme. While a riff often repeats itself, I will just ride on a couple of riffs. As a lifelong fan of everything “jazz,” riffing makes me happy.

That brings me to my first riff. I just read that the U.S. is populated by many of the unhappiest people on Planet Earth. Huh? Are we the hungriest? The poorest? The most violent? (Maybe a yes there, given gun proliferation and usage.) The most poorly educated? The sickest? I could go on and on, but you get the point. Many of our fellow citizens are being told that they should be unhappy and threatened by people who are different than they are. Do they encounter these “different people” during their daily lives? Rarely or never. But they are there anyway….living with them via social media—tweets, Twitter, Instagram posts and Facebook ads. Maybe most of us really are unhappy and unwilling to snap out of it and take charge of our own lives. I wish some of these folks would pay our community a visit and meet some of the wonderful people who

Consistency and commitment are the cornerstone of these mentoring programs, and it results in mentoring matches between “Bigs” (volunteer mentors) and “Littles” (mentees) that become lifelong friendships. “I feel like we’ll be friends forever,” Michael smiles. “He’s always been there for me, and I can’t say that about everyone in my life. It means a lot to me.” As many mentoring matches as are being introduced every week, BBSVC will always have more young people applying to be a part of the program, and so the need for volunteer mentors continues to grow. Across Ventura County, there are currently 150 youth who are waiting to meet their mentor, that special person who they will remember for the rest of their life as their driving influence. Whether a mentor, a volunteer, a community leader or an advocate, we can only start building healthier communities when we support each other; with that in mind, it’s more important than ever to bring our county’s youth and what they need to thrive into focus. BBSVC is bringing together the Bigs and Littles who will change the world, and we invite all of Ventura County to be a part of it.

The good news is that all of that is primarily due to lifestyle imbalances, such as poor diet, lack of exercise, etc., which means it is primarily in your control. Even if you have the genetic predisposition to disease, your choices in life have the ability to turn off that gene expression, thereby avoiding the disease. Unfortunately, many lifestyle choices men make lead to significantly diminished natural testosterone production. Having low testosterone impacts men in several immediate ways, such as erectile and sexual dysfunction, loss of muscle mass, fatigue, hair loss, etc. The bigger issue around low testosterone is that it is associated with increased risk of the Big 3. We have, what I consider, an epidemic of low testosterone. It is critical that men get their testosterone levels checked regularly starting in their 20s. INSTEAD, TEACH THEM TO YEARN FOR THE VAST AND ENDLESS SEA.” I’M SURE YOU’VE ALL HEARD THE SAYING, “A SON IS A SON UNTIL HE TAKES A WIFE, AND A DAUGHTER IS A DAUGHTER ALL HER LIFE.” We teach our sons to take care of their future wives without knowing it by teaching them to be caring, respectful and, of course, understanding. If they have a great father figure, they tend to learn and look up to them and follow that role. What happens if they don’t? I often wonder how they end up being? Regardless of their training, males are still expected to be the man around the house, filling those big shoes. When my boys were very young, they were so sweet and spe-
