MAJOR THEMES FEATURED IN OUR MAGAZINES THIS MONTH INCLUDE ECOLOGY, CLEAN ENERGY, ORGANIC AND HEALTHY EATING AND SUSTAINABLE LIVING… BASICALLY “LIVING GREEN” AS MUCH AS WE CAN. At a time when environmental protections have, among many things, shown great results in cleaner air here in Southern California (I still remember my kids complaining of chest pains when they played outside on smoggy days), there is increased pressure form polluting industries to halt or even reverse those gains. Since we are a community magazine and apolitical in our editorial approach, perhaps we can focus locally on impacting the planet a little less and treating ourselves with a bit more care. Eliminating plastic bags in stores in California (although 10 cents for a paper bag really annoys me) and plastic straws and utensils in Malibu may not sound like much, but it really is a big deal. Think of all the plastic debris that gets into the ocean and our waterways and the damage it does to that environment. So maybe today’s Benjamin may not have such a great future in plastics. Is eating organic food better for you than dining on pesticide-coated veggies or a feedlot steak filled with antibiotics and hormones? “Duh!!!” as Homer Simpson would say. If we place solar panels on the roof of our house, will it look not quite as good as before?

Maybe. But so what, if it decreases the use of fossil fuel and eventually pays for itself? So be proud of those funky looking panels.

The Toyota Prius always looked to me like a reject from a Jetsons cartoon. So what! If you want more class, read about the all-electric Mercedes-Benz B250 Electric Drive or the Mercedes-Benz S550e luxury plug-in hybrid. Like Flip Wilson said when he played the Geraldine character, “If you got it, flaunt it.” Save the planet in style.

Take care of your body and take care of the world around you. This may sound somewhat weird and personal, but I make sure to drop my used dental floss into the trash rather than the toilet so the string does not eventually find its way into the ocean. It’s a little thing but I feel good abut it. The fact is that humans have impacted our planet negatively for millennia. The little things we do add up. Let’s make those little things matter. Conejo Open Space Foundation: HELPING TO PRESERVE, PROMOTE & PROTECT OPEN SPACE

ARTICLE TRACY MARCYNZSYN PHOTOGRAPHY TOM ROBBINS & ELAYNE HAGGAN

CONEJO VALLEY’S NATURAL BEAUTY AND AMPLE OPEN SPACE INCLUDE 151 MILES OF MULTI-USE TRAILS AND THOUSANDS OF ACRES WHERE NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS THRIVE. With about a third of Thousand Oaks designated as permanent open space, owned and managed by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA), the nonprofit Conejo Open Space Foundation plays a vital role in ensuring that the trails, canyons and ridgelines are preserved for future generations. “The Foundation has worked tirelessly to increase community awareness and enhance our trails and natural lands. The open space belongs to everyone, and we want everyone to enjoy and care for it,” says COSF President, Elayne Haggan, who helped establish the organization in 1995. With a mission to raise funds to promote and maintain area open space and multi-use trails and educate citizens—especially children—about their roles as custodians and protectors of open space and the environment, the Foundation partners with local organizations and volunteers to support the COSCA open space system.

Community outreach, distributing trail maps and information, trail maintenance, habitat restoration and trail patrol are some of the programs volunteers contribute nearly 5,000 hours to each year.

Percy notes that the Foundation’s members share a contagious energy and enthusiasm: “Everybody cares passionately about open space.” The Foundation is supported through annual memberships, donations and grants, and board members donate their time and receive no monetary compensation for their services. Each year, COSF supports the Conejo Open Space Trails Advisory Committee (COSTAC) in sharing their love of the great outdoors with students during Trails Education Days, which has served almost 40,000 CVUSD students since 1992. The event involves some 80 volunteers, along with COSCA and NPS Park Rangers contributing countless hours to educate youth about the environment and their role in protecting it. Held April 23-27 this year, the event features volunteer-led nature hikes and presentations about indigenous animal species, ranger careers and trail safety and courtesy. Grants from Southern California Edison and the City of Thousand Oaks also help fund the program. Additional efforts include fundraising for projects like the bridge crossing in Hill Canyon, bike bells and resource management. The Foundation is currently raising funds to help support the recently approved Conejo Canyons Bridge, which will provide safe and easy access between Wildwood Park and the Conejo Canyons Open Space. The Foundation is also promoting the 2018 Conejo Open Space Challenge through May 31. Benefiting COSCA, the fundraiser invites everyone to experience 10 special trails, take pictures and (possibly) win prizes. To volunteer, donate and learn more about the Foundation, visit COSF.org.

“MODULAR UNITS ARE THE FUTURE, NOT ONLY FOR DWELLINGS, BUT ALSO FOR THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY,” SAYS WORLD-RENOWNED HOSPITALITY ICON, MICHAEL BEDNER, WHOSE FIRM, HIRSCH BEDNER AND ASSOCIATES (HBA) WAS A LEADING HOSPITALITY DESIGN COMPANY FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS. Although Bedner retired from HBA seven years ago, the acclaimed designer says that he has never been busier, juggling a series of new projects ranging from luxury hotel and condominium developments in Miami, Hong Kong and the Philippines, to a revolutionary new modular hospitality/dwelling concept that he recently unveiled at his design studio in Malibu. Bedner explained that he and his partners, Mohan Joshi and Breeze Giannasio, had been researching modular units globally for several years when they encountered an innovative Australian unit, the “G-pod,” that maximizes space and creates an innovative, affordable, luxurious, but transportable dwelling that’s simple to set up and comfortable to inhabit. The team has spent the past two years refining a new prototype that they can adapt, especially for the hospitality industry. “We call her ‘Soli,’ because she’s a solar-powered solution that we believe can solve many dwelling and hospitably needs,” Joshi explains. Giannasio adds, “With a few alterations Soli can be a guest house, holiday home, artist, design or Yoga studio. She can even fill in as a granny flat, a home office or even a bar, mini-café or pop-up store.” For individuals who need extra space, Bedner adds, “Soli is particularly appealing because it doesn’t require building plans or years of construction and the unit can be located anywhere you can place a Park Model RV.” SUSTAINABLE LIVING As excited as Bedner and his team are about the dwelling possibilities for Soli, they are even more interested in how the units can be used in the hospitality industry, especially in recreational vehicle parks where they provide a new level of luxurious living for up-market clients. Not only is Soli comfortable to inhabit, but the structures are environmentally correct; operating off-grid, or they can be easily hooked up to any water supply. Adorned with a sweeping architectural sail, Soli is designed to hold dozens of solar panels to fuel every need. “There’s even a Tesla hookup for devoted Tesla owners like me,” Bedner says.

Bedner’s team is committed to using sustainable materials and organic fabrics to furnish the interior of Soli, and they proudly note that the roof is easily adapted to grow vegetables. Soli is able to withstand most fires and just about any weather, including hurricane force (up to Category 3) winds and floods. The prototype sports an elegant deck that pops out of a fireproof, watertight container, expanding to two and a half times its original size. Shameless Plug-Ins

ARTICLE WILL ANDRE PHOTOGRAPHY BEN MALKIN

THE MERCEDES-BENZ BRAND HAS LONG BEEN SYNONYMOUS WITH LUXURY, QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE, BUT EVEN THE CENTURY-OLD ICON OF THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IS NOT IMMUNE TO THE EVER-PRESENT WINDS OF CHANGE. When the first Mercedes-Benz-branded vehicles came onto the market in 1926, the commercial engine work of Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, and that of Karl Benz had already celebrated their respective 40th anniversaries. With its modest horizontal cylinder and flywheel and three-wheeled design, the 1885 “Benz Patent Motor Car” laid the groundwork for technological innovations and a patent portfolio that encompasses virtually every component of the modern automobile. While Mercedes-Benz has forged ahead over the years with innovations that include the first multivalve engine (1910), the supercharger (1921) and the first diesel-powered passenger car (1936), few people realize that the company first employed a battery-electric drivetrain in a vehicle early last century. Indeed, the pre-Benz Mercedes Mixte was a gas-electric hybrid vehicle designed for racing that would run up to 75 miles per hour—in 1906. Fast forward nearly a dozen decades and Mercedes-Benz is still at the forefront of advanced powertrains, and as is often the case in the automotive world, technologies that were once available only in a laboratory or in experimental quantities are now extensively integrated throughout the model range. We visited Mercedes-Benz of Thousand Oaks to experience two of their electrified models currently on the market.

40

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | April 2018

Pure Electric Luxury The Mercedes-Benz B250 Electric Drive is a 5-door compact powered by an all-electric drivetrain that moves its distinct, practical silhouette with nary a whisper of audible response as its electrons exit the 28-kwh lithium ion battery cell and put power to the wheels. Good for 177 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque and with seating for five, the B-Class gets its power exclusively from a plug in the wall. This particular example comes in at a palatable MSRP of $47,780 and features just about everything one could desire in a practical, eco-friendly family hauler. Its interior is naturally all MercedesBenz with real wood trim, optional heated seats and certain modern musthaves such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, and even a refrigerated glove box. The B250’s upright profile gives it an airy and spacious feel that belies its compact size. While certainly no dragstrip demon, the Mercedes-Benz B250 is a stout performer on the road. Steering feel is tight and composed, body roll is minimal and acceleration is brisk enough thanks to electric motors offering 100% of torque being available from rest. Indeed, the B250 Electric Drive will accelerate to freeway speed in under seven seconds. Now, testing the car’s 0-to-60 times repeatedly will certainly have a negative impact on the car’s 60-mile range, nevertheless, it’s good to know the car will respond in a time of need—provided the battery has the juice. Overall, the B250 Electric Drive is a practical and luxurious car for the ecofriendly set. It won’t get you to the front of the valet line or even to Glendale and back on a single charge, but then again, that is not this car’s mission.

SHAMELESS PLUG-INS

(CON TI N U ED)

Green with Envy Available since 2014 and updated nearly every year since, the MercedesBenz S550e is a so-called plug-in hybrid that also operates in pure-electric mode. Under the hood is a gasoline engine and in the trunk is a battery pack that combine to produce over 400 horsepower and pound-feet of torque while rocketing the car to 60 miles per hour in just over five seconds. And what is the point of multiple power sources? In this case, the answer is an effective MPG rating of 58 combined—not bad for a 5,000-pound bank vault of a car. As the pinnacle of the production-grade Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle lineup, the S-Class is known for its uncompromising luxury and formidable road presence. This vehicle retails for $107,825 and features some impressive technology and creature comforts, like the AIR BALANCE® cabin fragrance system and rear seat entertainment screens that rival your local sports bar. Indeed, the only way to truly comprehend the luxury offered by the top of the MercedesBenz range is to experience it yourself. Should the S550e turn out to be too over the top for your personal style of eco-friendly transportation, don’t worry. The S-Class’ precocious younger sibling, the Mercedes-Benz C350e plug-in hybrid, could be just your cup of green tea.
