Gentlemen
In today’s fast-paced world, the concept of the gentleman may seem like a relic belonging to a bygone era. Top hats. Monocles. Perhaps even pocket watches.
When you close your eyes and think gentleman, what picture does your mind paint? A black-andwhite photo of a man with a serious face?
Or maybe something more modern?
The essence of what it means to be a gentleman has evolved, after all. It's no longer about good breeding or social standing. It's more about embodying timeless values such as respect, integrity and kindness. It’s about striving to be the best version of yourself and lifting up those around you.
Colorado Springs is brimming with gentlemen—people who do the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do. People who make our corner of the world brighter.
This issue is dedicated to the gentlemen in our community. We appreciate you. We have a packed magazine this month, so don't miss a word!
Read about a talented blacksmith in Manitou Springs, about an artist who draws his inspiration from society and about an integrative wellness center that offers men a way to take better control of their health.
Like fast cars? We have a pair of stories for you! The first offers all the details on how you can meet some of the drivers who will tackle the Pikes Peak Hill Climb this month. The other highlights a nonprofit that shows its gratitude to veterans and first responders by giving them rides in some of the coolest cars on the road.
Foodies... we haven't forgotten you. Learn about a juice bar that is committed to nutritiously dense food and drinks, a farm growing lettuce, leafy greens and herbs in vertical shipping containers and a great spot where you can enjoy a meal, grab some imported and house-made goods and groceries, and stock up on high quality cuts of meat at the large meat counter.
And finally... Check out our short list of fab mani-pedi spots in Colorado Springs and get the details on Colorado Springs Fashion Week.
So much great local info! Thanks for reading.

STRATA OFFERS INDIVIDUALIZED CARE
ATTAINABLE + SUSTAINABLE MEN’S HEALTH
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | WELLNESS 12
ARTICLE BY LINDSAY TALLMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STRATA WELLNESS
Dr. Michael Barber is the Medical Director at Strata Med, and a founding member of the integrative wellness center. Dr. Barber, a traditionally trained cardiologist who worked in invasive cardiology for 30 years, partnered with Strata’s two other co-founders, Judy Mackey and Brenda Smith, to create a common-sense approach wellness center that treats the person instead of just treating the problem.
COMPREHENSIVE + CUSTOMIZED
Strata offers concierge medicine and amongst men, the men’s lifestyle membership is the most popular. They offer a variety of services including internal, functional and structural medicine. Mindful wellbeing is also offered. The men’s lifestyle membership is for a year and offers men a comprehensive and customized approach to their health that focuses on the patient’s unique needs.
Although the men’s membership is appropriate for men at any age or stage of life, Dr. Barber says that ideally a man will come in during his forties or early fifties, so that issues can be corrected before they become bigger problems. He stresses that men suffer many of the same issues that women do, but some of those problems are not as prominently demonstrated.
Dr. Barber notes, “Men are as potentially as likely as women to need some type of hormone balancing.”
The men’s lifestyle membership offers a comprehensive lifestyle intake that identifies health goals and conducts lab tests, including extensive lab studies, that look for additional issues behind the standard battery of tests. The membership is composed of three parts including the core assessment, optimization and maintenance phase. Ultimately, the goal is to create a plan for the patient that is attainable and sustainable.
INDIVIDUALIZED CARE
Thanks to the individualized nature of the men’s lifestyle membership, men feel heard and valued. Appointments aren’t rushed and Strata’s focus is on how many lives can be positively impacted. Dr. Barber doesn’t mind being questioned and sees conversations as an opportunity to educate. As men go through the program, goals change which lends itself to a very fluid program.
As part of the patient-centered approach, the medical providers at Strata don’t hesitate to refer patients to other providers. Strata focuses on the importance of listening to people and avoiding a standardized, one-size-fits-all type of program. Strata providers work collaboratively to create a long-term plan for each patient. The goal is to do the best they can for each patient.
When Dr. Barber isn’t treating patients, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and four dogs. He says he starts his days with at least a mile-long walk.
“I love what I do,” he says. “I love taking care of people. I love what has been afforded to me in my life.”

WARRIOR’S CHARIOT: NONPROFIT GIVES VETERANS, FIRST RESPONDERS AND CHILDREN FACING ADVERSITY A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE 16
Gratitude frequently comes in the form of words, but there's an organization in Colorado that expresses it differently—through the roar of powerful engines and the sleek lines of high-performance automobiles.
Warrior’s Chariot, a nonprofit dedicated to honoring veterans, first responders and children facing adversity, orchestrates unique events that provide a thrilling mix of supercars and camaraderie.
Phillip Koontz, a Navy SEAL combat veteran, recently received an invitation to one such event—an extraordinary opportunity to ride in some of the flashiest cars on the planet.
RALLY DAY
The day began with an air of secrecy as Koontz, along with about 30 other "warriors," car owners/drivers and support staff gathered early at a stealth location. These events are purposefully private, designed solely to honor the warriors—not to draw attention to the organizers. They shared breakfast burritos and coffee and each warrior drew a token from a bucket, determining which car they would ride in first.
“Then, we were off to the races,” Koontz reminisces, describing the rush of winding through scenic mountain routes in an Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari, two Porsches and a “souped-up Audi.”
“It was a bummer I couldn’t drive,” he said with a chuckle, calling the experience “one of a kind.”
They stopped several times to change cars and later enjoyed a BBQ lunch together at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Koontz, who co-owns Karambit.com, donated a folding tactical knife that was gifted to one lucky warrior and all participants received small goodie bags with t-shirts and coupons.
What sets this nonprofit apart, Koontz says, is that “they give an experience rather than just financial help.” Koontz emphasized the importance of events like these in providing space for individuals to connect with others who understand their experiences.

“It’s hard for us, sometimes, to get out of our shell. It’s hard to open up even though we need to. … We 100 percent appreciated it and walked away feeling very loved and very seen,” he says.
A SPECIAL MISSION
Chad Jensen, president of Warrior’s Chariot, says that’s exactly why Rick Douglas founded the organization in 2018.
“We really like to put on a good event and make sure that everybody has the time of their life,” Jensen says.
These vehicles aren't just transportation—they are symbols of freedom. Warrior’s Chariot holds rallies like the one Koontz attended, as well as track days. And recently, it helped Make-aWish grant a wish to child who dreamed of riding in a Rolls Royce. Nine other supercars showed up to create a private showing just for the child and his family and friends. The organization also regularly lends a hand (or exotic cars and their owners) to other good causes such as toy drives, Aero Angel and more.
“We’ve got a lot of very generous supercar owners,” Jensen says.
At the moment, about 80 car owners are on the roster. Due to logistics, track days max out at about 40 cars. Rallies could accommodate more cars, if more were available. The goal is to hold more events each year—and ultimately to expand beyond Colorado.
“It is a bottomless pool (of warriors) that we could get to participate,” he says. “What we don’t have, unfortunately, is a bottomless pool of supercar owners. … We are looking for cars that you can’t see every day. We’re looking for the most exotic of supercars.”
The other limiting factor is funds. This experience is complimentary for warriors, but the events aren't cheap. Renting a track, for instance, can cost $12,000 to $15,000 per day, with track personnel and first responders. To date, the car owners not only have been donating their time to the events, but also footing a large portion of the bill—$200 to $300 each per event to pay for their own lunch, a warrior’s lunch and other costs.
“We hope to make it to where the drivers don’t have to pay," Jensen says. "We really appreciate the drivers who donate their time and really appreciate the veterans for everything they’ve done."

Driven to Create
Kevin A. Johnson knew from a very young age that he wanted to be an artist. Inspired by his Aunt Mary, a painter, and a close family friend who was also a painter, he knew that being an artist was what he wanted to do with his life. His has been a journey in that one direction.
Johnson recounts that as a kid, “I already knew exactly what I wanted to do.”
He draws inspiration from society. He’s currently inspired by the way things are changing with technology and how people are looking for more meaning and creativity in their lives. During COVID, he says, many took the opportunity to reconsider their priorities and values. He loves seeing how many individuals

have returned to things they loved doing as a kid, but haven’t made time for as an adult. His work allows him to incorporate themes of spirituality and individuality, as well.
As a child, Johnson got his start by copying from comic books and teaching himself how to draw. He eventually started working in acrylics and experimenting with collages. As he began working on larger pieces, he switched to oil paint so he could blend the paint more and get the exact look that he sought. When digital art came on the scene, he taught himself how to use Photoshop. Today, he uses many different mediums including clay, digital, acrylics and oil.
MEETING A MENTOR
Around 2011, Johnson was admiring a figurine line by an artist named Thomas Blackshear and reached out. The two eventually connected and formed a mentorship and friendship.
Johnson is driven and works on his craft every day. Currently working as a full-time artist, his artwork is unique because of the stories the pieces tell. Johnson uses color, facial expressions and lighting to help create the layers of each story.
Johnson says aspiring artists should, “Be patient, learn that nobody will do it for you, network, and look at the direction you want to go.”
FUTURE AMBITIONS
Johnson hopes to share his artwork in more shows in the future, including expanding to the Denver area and potentially nationally. Eventually, he’d like to open up a facility to teach various art mediums and invite other artists to get involved, as well.
Here in Colorado Springs, Auric Gallery currently has nine of Johnson’s paintings listed on its website. The gallery recently featured Johnson’s new paintings in the show titled “Serenity.”

PIKES PEAK HILL CLIMB, PORSCHE COLORADO SPRINGS
Meet the DRIVERS
Purple mountains majesty – from the moment Zebulon Pike gave the mountain its name in 1806, and possibly before, people have been trying to conquer Pikes Peak. It commands respect, towering above the landscape and can be seen for miles in every direction.
Known as the Sun Mountain by the Ute Indians, Pikes Peak shows a different side of itself with each angle of the sun. Large enough to have its own weather patterns, those who live in its shadow know to look to the mountain for their daily weather report. Pikes Peak is 14,115 feet of pure wilderness and has been recognized by many over the years as a natural wonder.
The invention of automobiles gave a new conquest to add to the list.
Hill Climb racing is exactly what it sounds like–drivers start at the bottom of the hill and race to the top in a time-trial format. They compete against each other, but not next to one another. For a Hill Climb, participants not only compete with each other, they compete against the terrain, they compete against the elements, and they compete against themselves.
This year will mark 102 years since the inception of the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb. The race is known worldwide and brings in race fans from all over to enjoy the sport and experience Colorado Springs.
DRIVER MEET & GREET
To honor this historic race, Porsche hosts the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Driver Meet & Greet. The event was gaining traction before COVID restrictions limited group gatherings. The dealership decided to pivot and open up the campus to host the event outdoors and they saw more than 600 attendees. They decided there was a demand for this type of event and proceeded to give the people what they wanted. To date, the event sees between 800 and 1,000 attendees who are eager to explore the 12-acre campus, see a variety of cars and visit the vendors. The main event is a driver panel, where the drivers and other giants of the motorsports industry come together to discuss the race and answer audience questions.
What is most unique about this event is that it is not a sales event. Porsche has a rich history and believes their heritage is as much a part of their cars as the pistons – so much so, that their mechanics attend a course that teaches Porsche history before they are allowed to touch the cars themselves. This event is a true celebration for the community, bringing people all over the world together with one common passion.
“Porsche is an endurance racing company–they are in it for the long haul and to go the distance,” states Justin Underwood, Sales Manager at Porsche

of Colorado Springs. He goes on to explain that Porsche’s philosophy when it comes to racing is “we’re going to win or we are going to break trying.” Ferdinand Porsche was a brilliant engineer and was known to believe there was no second place; he maintained high standards. This gave him a reputation of being hard to work with, but it also set a foundation of excellence that persists today.
LEGACY AND HERITAGE
Porsche honors legacy and heritage through their drivers, as well.
Loni Unser is a third-generation 26-year-old driver racing the Hill Climb for Porsche this year. She grew up watching her dad and grandfather race. Unser found that as a young skier, she had a propensity for finding lines and appreciated speed at a level that transcended the slopes. This will be her third Hill Climb and second with Porsche. She is one of 5 women drivers in a field of 68 and when asked how many in her age group, she says “I don’t know how many 26-year-olds there are in racing, but there could be more.”
“And she’s not just any driver, either – she’s good!” comments Fred Veitch, another decorated Hill Climber and chairman of the board for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
Veitch has been racing with Porsches since the 1970s and started racing the Hill Climb at age 64, setting a record in the Time Attack 2 class at age 67 driving his 14-year-old Porsche.
“The course changes daily – you really don’t know what you are going to get until you are on the mountain," he says of the Hill Climb. "As the driver you have to accept the road conditions and drive within yourself to finish.”
AN OPEN INVITATION
Those casually interested in Colorado Springs history and culture, those who are serious motorsports fans, and everyone in between is invited and welcomed to the Colorado Springs Porsche campus this summer to celebrate the culture of racing and the heritage of excellence for which Porsche is known. This year's event will be the evening of June 19.

Ola Juice Bar: Committed to Nutritiously Dense Food + Drink Options
Exploring Healthy Choices

Cold-pressed juice is created by exerting thousands of pounds of pressure to fruits and vegetables. The process squeezes nutrients from the skin and flesh, producing a very nutrient dense liquid. Not only does this process create a more delicious juice than traditional methods, it is also healthier and stays fresher longer because no heat is used in the process.
Ola Juice Bar specializes in a variety of made-in-house cold press juices, smoothies, and smoothie bowls utilizing whole ingredients. There are two locations in Colorado Springs providing healthy food and drink options.
AN INSPIRED NAME
The word “Ola” comes from both Hawaiian and Portuguese heritage. Simplified, the word symbolizes life, health, and livelihood, and is illustrated by the natural movement through water.
“Ola Juice Bar was born from our longtime love of conscious nutrition, mindful eating, and our aspiration to foster a global community where people are excited to flourish and shine!” Ola Juice Bar’s website states. “We are vigilant of the ingredients we choose–where and how they are grown, and purposely plan recipes that respect and fuel our bodies. Our core values of MOVEMENT, NOURISHMENT, & GROWTH are embraced by our team every day and are at the heart of our company culture.”
LOCAL’S CHOICE | FITNESS 28
HEALTHY OFFERINGS
The menu is primarily plant-based and also offers vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options. The highly trained staff is available to suggest custom options to cater to special diets. If you’re looking to enhance memory, strength, balance, focus, immunity, and/or restoration, wellness shots can be added to juices and smoothies, as well.
Heartier menu offerings include various gourmet toast options, grilled pesto and cheese sandwich, Mediterranean bowl, and glow soup. All menu items are made in-house with the exception of the bread, which is locally sourced from Provision Bread & Bakery.
“Head Chef Lina Jacqueline combines nutritious ingredients that most people would be surprised by,” says General Manager Sara Schamback. “She has developed a menu with whole, nutritious ingredients and only uses natural sweeteners. She is always creating and tweaking menu items to elevate healthy options.”
In addition, the Garden of the Gods location also boasts a La Marzocco espresso machine, if you’re looking to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee.

David Bradley is a blacksmith who fabricates and finishes cookware in the eccentric, eclectic and entertaining tourist town of Manitou Springs, known for its culture, festivals, haunts and history.
Bradley began blacksmithing on a horse farm in Ohio. His wife initially expressed interest in learning the tools of the trade, so Bradley built a woodfired forge on the farm. His wife’s interest waned—but Bradley was hooked.
From the Midwest to the mountains, Bradley built a forge at the Manitou Art Center to applause and acclaim. The Manitou Art Center is dedicated to providing an environment in which artists, tinkerers, creatives and collaborators can flourish.
“We appreciate David’s generosity, skills, and gentle, peaceful manner,” says Alain Navaratne, Makerspace & Gallery Manager at the MAC. “His unique hands-on expertise and creativity are invaluable.”

UTILITARIAN CREATIVITY
Bradley fabricates outdoor cookware, fashioning skillets for camping at sunrise or under the stars. He wants his creativity to be utilitarian — producing practical, long-standing products.
“I love outdoor cooking,” says Bradley. “It's hard to find functional things of quality. Cookware is one of the most functional products you can make with blacksmithing. Many create knives, but cookware is much more fun to make— there’s more opportunity for shaping.”
TOP-NOTCH CRAFTSMANSHIP
Bradley frequently collaborates with Ken Sharp, a seasoned metal spinner in Pueblo. Metal spinning is a forming process accomplished by aligning a circle of metal and molding it cold— like pottery, but on a horizontal spinning lathe. As the lathe rotates, the desired shape is achieved using specified hand tools.
“I thoroughly appreciate hand-built, crafted items,” says Josef Peot, a praising Pikes Peak patron. “Dave's skillets are the best I’ve used, and I own four. I’m an avid outdoorsman— and the ability to cook a great meal in the mountains is a game changer.”
“Dave’s craftsmanship is the best I’ve come across,” continues Peot. “When you cook with his skillets, you see his hard work and sweat. His products will last and be passed to my great-grandchildren. Once you meet him, you’ll instantly see that he’s a top-notch, stellar blacksmith — creating quality, durable items that will last for decades.”

House-Made + Delicious
Growing up in Mexico, Jasmine Fletes and Omar Teyechea were raised to be very proud of their culture and traditions. Their family recipes were passed down from previous generations to connect them with their heritage.
“I want people to have the chance to enjoy and appreciate our culture. We love our traditions and our food. We want to show people just how varied Mexican cuisine can be,” Fletes says.
FINDING LOVE AND REALIZING DREAMS
Fletes was raised in Jalisco, a west central region of Mexico. Her father was farmer and owned a carniceria. She and her four sisters helped with the family business. When Fletes was a teenager, her family moved to Pueblo and her father opened 3 Margaritas. He taught Jasmine everything she needed to know to run a restaurant.
Teyechea grew up in Tarachi, Sonora, a northern border region of Mexico. He trained to become a butcher and dreamed of one day owning his own carniceria.

The two met in Pueblo, fell in love and married in 2002. Together, after a few trials and tribulations, they made their dreams come true. They opened their first Sonora’s Prime Taco Shop & Carniceria in Pueblo. Soon after, they opened a location in Tucson, Ariz., that is currently run by extended family.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Business was thriving, so Fletes and Teyechea decided to partner with Fletes’ sisters to expand. They opened a second location in Pueblo and a few years later, they moved to Colorado Springs and opened their first location on Barnes Road. Just a year later, their fifth location opened in Falcon.
“We have a motto, Family First,” Fletes says. “We are very much a family business, and I wanted my sisters to realize their dreams, too. We all love to work and we love what we do. This business allows us to have good balance of work and family.”
ONE-STOP SHOP
Sonora’s Prime is a destination where you can enjoy a meal, grab some imported and house-made goods and groceries, and stock up on high-quality cuts of meat at their large meat counter. Teyechea has curated a wide selection of cuts and meats that have been lovingly marinated using his family’s recipes.
“Our meat marinades have no artificial color, flavors, or preservatives,” Fletes says.
TACOS AND MORE
The menu at their taco counter is extensive. They offer tacos, burritos, nachos, enchiladas, tortas, soups, quesadillas and desserts,
to name a few. They also offer a choice of meat for each menu item including asada, adobada, al pastor, barbacoa, carnitas, chorizo, ground beef, shredded chicken and grilled chicken. The options are endless.
Don’t forget to stop at the salsa bar to load up on house-made salsas, sauces, and toppings for your meal. The salsa bar is free with your meal purchase, and they even provide to-go containers for take-out meals.
“A good taco isn’t just the taco and the meat,” Fletes says. “It’s all about the condiments!”
For dessert, they offer flan churros, churro cheesecake, tres leches cake and sopapillas. They also have a bakery case where they proudly sell baked goods from Norma’s Bakery, a bakery here in Colorado Springs.
GROCERIES AND SUPPLIES
If you love to cook, they have everything you need to prepare a delicious Mexican meal. You can purchase house-made items such as salsas, sauces, queso and tortillas. They also offer fresh produce, Mexican cheeses, chips, candies, canned goods, spices, as well as a vast selection of imported and house-made Mexican beverages.
If that isn’t enough, you can also purchase imported Mexican stoneware to cook with and serve your home-cooked meals in. They really have thought of everything!

OTK FARMS: PROVIDING SUSTAINABLE AND EFFICIENT HYDROPONICALLY GROWN PRODUCE
Vertical Farms in Shipping Containers
ARTICLE BY CARA BUKACEK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY OTK FARMS & ALEXANDRA ISAKSEN
MUST SEE | HEALTH + WELLNESS 40
“Capturing and maintaining the quality of produce from the moment it is harvested to the moment is goes to the customer can stretch the brain sometimes!” —Blake Tate
As the population grows on our beautiful planet, so does the need for increased food supply. Farmable land is limited and healthy crops are dependent on ideal weather conditions, pest control, and fertile soil.
But what if there were a more efficient alternative?
Vertical hydroponic farming can grow the same number of plants in 400 square feet as three acres of traditional farming. It only requires about five gallons of water per day versus five to seven thousand gallons for three planted acres. Insects and catastrophic weather are a non-issue as the plants are grown indoors in a climate-controlled space.
ENTREPRENEURS WITH A CONSCIENCE
Blake Tate and Alexandra Isaksen are friends who share an entrepreneurial spirit. They saw a need for creating a local food source that is sustainable, efficient and nutritionally dense. While researching all of the possibilities, they discovered a company that was outfitting vertical hydroponic farms in shipping containers.
“They can be placed almost anywhere and we were sold very quickly after seeing one in action at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo,” Tate says.
SUSTAINABLE, EFFICIENT, AND NUTRITIONALLY DENSE
OTK Farms is focusing their efforts on a variety of lettuce, leafy greens and herbs. Their 40-by-10-foot shipping container is equipped to grow up to 9,000 plants, using only five gallons of water per day. The high-tech operating system controls climate conditions, nutrients and lighting, and can be accessed remotely through an app on a smartphone.
Their produce is herbicide-, pesticide-, and GMOfree. Because it is grown locally, the time from farm to table/restaurant is decreased, providing a more nutritionally dense product. The longer produce sits on a truck or in storage, the greater the loss of
vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. OTK Farms prides itself on getting produce to the consumer in about two days.
“Capturing and maintaining the quality of produce from the moment it is harvested to the moment is goes to the customer can stretch the brain sometimes!” Tate says. “Coordinating harvest dates with deliveries and ensuring that the produce is happy in the interim takes up quite a bit of time, especially when you have different crops that like diverse ways of being stored.”
FUTURE GOALS
Tate and Isaksen eventually plan to expand their current operation to include breeding specialty chickens, producing local honey, as well as creating a line of sauces utilizing their herbs. They also plan to buy a second hydroponic unit to grow edible flowers and to experiment with fruiting crops.
In addition, they proudly donate a portion of their harvest to the Springs Rescue Mission as a way of providing healthy produce to the unhoused. They have been thinking about other ways they could support the mission in the future.
“We would like to eventually offer their community employment opportunities (learning the ropes of hydroponics) to help individuals who have shown a desire for a new way of life to get back on their feet,” Isaksen says. “To offer this through our business would be incredible.”
COMMERCE
The farm sells in bulk to private chefs, restaurants, and retail spaces. They also offer direct sales to consumers via farmers’ markets as well as a subscription service for home delivery.

Encouraging Expression
Colorado Springs Fashion Week is dedicated not only to the promotion of fashion in the local community, but to art as a whole and all its verticals. The enterprise was created as a labor of love with the goal of encouraging expression and individualism through fashion by highlighting local creatives.
“Fashion Week is renowned and prominent in metropolitan cities, but glamour, fashion, and creativity exist here in Colorado Springs, too,” Taylor explains.
“Having our own fashion week gives us the opportunity to promote art cultivation and make fashion accessible to everyone in our local community. Whether it be an aspiring artist, photographer, or someone dreaming of walking the runway, we are able to facilitate a chance for them to pursue that expression.”
Multiple major local sponsors and partnerships have stepped up this year to help further the vision of inspiring the community and promoting local retailers, designers and artists.
Lots of Ways to Participate
Whether it’s attending one of the six runway shows, the launch party, the wrap party, or simply encouraging a friend who has dreams of designing couture to get involved, there are a plethora of ways to participate in this year’s event.
“We’re so excited for COSFW 2024 and this exciting chance to bring creatives together,” Taylor says. “Inclusivity is one of our core pillars at Colorado Springs Fashion Week and to us, that means supporting anyone with a dream.”
Mark your calendars for a week of glamour, creativity, and style, from June 24th to June 30th. Submissions for participation in Colorado Springs Fashion Week are now open.

“
ENSURING A LITTLE ME TIME” FOR THE PAST 100 YEARS.
When you’ve been around for 100 years, you’ve been around for a lot of “me time.” Thinking. Readin g Scrolling social media. Our commitment extends beyond merely providing power and water, but ensuring every aspect of your day, even the discreet act of flushing, is supported. We’re always working to enhance the quality of your “me time.” That’s a Century of Service. And that’s worth celebrating.
USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.
A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.
SOMETHING SWEET
This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.
SOMETHING TANGY
Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.
SOMETHING SPICY
This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.
SOMETHING LIQUID
It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.
SOMETHING TOMATO
You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
THE SPICE COMBINATION
This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.
HOMEMADE
BBQ SAUCE

• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
