Style
A few years back, a longtime friend was in Colorado for a work conference. We met for dinner one evening and she stopped mid-sentence to glance around the restaurant. Then, she leaned in and whispered, “Coloradans have an interesting style.” I laughed. “Jeans and t-shirts, you mean?” “Yes!” she said, looking down and realizing that her lovely Washington DC attire was a bit, well, fancy compared with those around her, including me in my jeans and t-shirt. But no worries, she was thoroughly comfortable in her style, as was I in mine. That’s what makes the world go ‘round, right? Each of us is unique and that is exactly as it should be. So, what’s your style? Not just what you wear, but what you surround yourself with and what you do with your time. Are you white marble and chandeliers? Authentic log cabin? Eclectic? Farmhouse? How about clothing? Are you jeans? Suits? Khakis? Leggings? Whatever your style, own it. Hone it. Let it reflect who you are. In our September issue, we have lots of terrific information about our great city and how you can be part of it. We highlight an old-world folk duo, a longtime local artist and the upcoming airshow. We talk about a 30-yearold boutique, suggest a fab spot for hair and makeup and tell you where to find locally grown lettuce. Ever thought about archery? How about volun teering for a regional food bank? We’ve got all the details. So, sit back and take a few minutes for you. Make reading good news part of your style. The best part? It’s all for a great cause. Proceeds help fund three area museums: the Fourth Infantry Division Museum at Ft. Carson, the National Museum of World War II Aviation, and the Peterson Air and Space Museum at Peterson AFB.
The air show was first organized in 2014 by a small group of local pilots and warbird owners who recognized that Colorado Springs could sustain a first-rate airshow— one that would bring out rare and unusual aircraft from local owners and draw pilots and aircraft from distant col lections and museums.
“The Pikes Peak Regional Airshow is a unique event, with history, rare vintage warbirds, current military aircraft, and flight demonstrations that are simply amazing to see!” said event coordinator Travis Stedman. “Add in the static displays, beer garden, local vendors, the KidZone! activities for children, and there’s something for everyone.”
“People just want to get back into the things they enjoyed pre-COVID, and the airshow is a perfect outdoor family activity to do so!” Stedman said.

Care and Share has an equally important purpose. … Care and Share makes a massive contribution to food security having delivered over 20 million pounds of food over the last year to our 31 Southern Colorado counties. Hunger Action Month is really centered around com munity–the goal of the campaign is to drive awareness and inspire the public to get involved with our mission. For many, a daily meal is a simple choice of what to eat. For people facing hunger, it could be the impossible decision between food and other important needs, like medicine, or utilities. In September, we’re asking for our community’s support in helping us provide more meals to our neighbors, so they don’t ever have to make such a tough decision.

Our annual Hunger Action Day Community-Wide Food Drive will also be back on Friday, September 23rd! Stop by our Distribution Centers in Colorado Springs (2605 Preamble Pt.) or Pueblo (100 Greenhorn Dr.) between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and drop off food donations. Some of our most needed items are canned protein, canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, peanut but ter, boxed meals, soup, snacks, and rice. THERE ARE LOTS OF WORTHY NONPROFITS COMPETING FOR FOLKS’ DOLLARS—WHY SHOULD THEY CONTRIBUTE TO CARE AND SHARE? At Care and Share, we believe no one should be hungry. We are a unifying cause that everyone, regardless of background, race, religion, political affiliation, or gen der can rally behind. OUR TOWN | ARTS + CULTURE
Colorado Springs has a rich history. Established in 1871 strictly as a destination, it was too picturesque for General William Jackson Palmer to pass up. During a time where cities were generally settled around a water source, or at least a place rich in natural resources, Colorado Springs was different. Set apart. The Antlers Hotel was erected facing Pikes Peak, framing it as the main feature of the city. Visitors would ride in on the train and get a view of the “Wild West” while dining, sleeping and enjoying the latest comforts of the era. Soon enough, the dry mountain air and sun shine became a draw for those suffering with tubercu losis or other ailments. Its beauty and purity were said to have healing powers.
ultimately function as an entire arts district under one roof. They were certainly ahead of their time, as the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (FAC) is still only one of a few multi-discipline art insti tutions in the nation. The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, as it was re-imagined and re-branded in the 1930’s, still func tioned as an art school, but now also incorporated per forming arts as well as an art museum.

Katharine Lee Bates was so inspired by Pikes Peak that she penned the famous song “America the Beautiful” that still endures today. It’s easy to see how the area inspires all kinds of art.

ARTS DISTRICT In 1919, Julie Penrose founded the Broadmoor Art Academy (BAA) on the corner of Cascade Avenue and Dale Street, giving art inspiration a literal foundation in Colorado Springs. In the 1930’s two local philan thropists and art collectors joined her to build upon the original idea. Alice Bemis Taylor and Elizabeth Sage Hare teamed up with Penrose to further develop the facilities by concepting an expansion that would
Funded by Alice Bemis Taylor, renowned southwest architect of the time John Gaw Meem was commis sioned to design the building that incorporated Pueblo Revival structure and Native American Iconography into a modern Art Deco style. To date, the building design has won multiple architectural awards and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Elizabeth Sage Hare served on the Fine Arts Center’s Board of Trustees as the first president. She also was tasked with recruiting teachers and exhibits from around the globe to be featured in the art museum. The museum was so well renowned that during World War II, it actually became a repository for several famous pieces. Fearing air raids would target and destroy these treasures, multiple pieces were transferred from large museums and collections to the Fine Arts Center for safe keeping. It was said to have housed works by Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne, Honore Daumier, and Francisco Goya.

ARTIST’S PALETTE | ARTS + CULTURE FIVE DECADES OF ART TUNSONFLOYD 28

FLOYD TUNSON REFLECTS ON A HALF CENTURY 29| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/COLORADOSPRINGSSEPTEMBER 2022
Tunson’s older brother was an artist.
“He was still in high school,” Tunson said. “Every time I saw him, he was always drawing. … I would just sit on the couch and watch him work. It was like magic to me to watch him work.”
His brother was always creating—architectural ren derings, painting, sculptures. Tunson doesn’t remem ber a time before art was in his home. He spent consid erable time at the neighborhood library with his friends during his early years and discovered other black art ists—people like Charles White and Jacob Lawrence.
“Those paid off,” he said, laughing.
Tunson ended up with degrees in art and art educa tion, began a summer program at Colorado University for black students interested in law, was drafted into the military during the Vietnam era and took an early out to settle and teach in Manitou Springs, where his wife grew up.
You’ve seen his work. Floyd Tunson has been cranking out art in the Pikes Peak region for five decades. But do you know who this Janus is? This man who over and over depicts the two faces of life–the ever-conflicting ideas of its chaos and magnificence?
Tunson had a great art teacher at East High School in Denver and loved art, but he had planned to major in English in college. At Adams State College, however, he realized he didn’t know as much about art as he thought he did. He changed his major to art and following a fam ily friend’s advice to have a back-up plan, he also began taking art education courses.
For 30 years, he taught art at Palmer High School, retiring in 2000.

Seeing the work is always a revelation.”
He’s thrilled to see a resurgence these days, as many STEM programs have transformed into STE A M programs that include the arts. “They caught on,” he said. “It’s a disci pline. Man is innately creative.”
What’s next? More art, of course. “It’s my love,” he said. “It’s my sanctu ary. I love doing the art. It’s not a job to me. … I’ll be doing it until I check out.” 30
He says he’s a better artist than he was 30 years ago, but that he’s still learning and receptive to growing. His most recent show, Ascent, was a 70-piece ret rospective covering 50 years. “Much of that work has been in stor age for a long time,” he said. “It’s just so wonderful to see it displayed again. …
In his later years of teaching, however, schools were taking the arts less seriously. “Art was always on the fringes when the cuts came,” he said. “It was always something extracurricular to them.”

During those many years of teaching, Tunson was always creating. “I had two jobs,” he said. “I was work ing on my work and I was teaching. … I got out of school around 2:30. I would eat, take a nap, get into the studio around 7 pm and stay until midnight.” This daily routine is how he cre ated such a massive collection of art. Sometimes, he would simply contem plate; other times, he would paint or draw or sculpt or build. The key was always making the time.

Gordon Lewis and Grace Easley make up Roma Ransom — an eclectic, bohemian, world folk duo that’s been together since 2010, performing across America with music from across the earth.
Before busking in California, a stop in Colorado Springs left an impression. Roma Ransom now calls the Springs home—and has for a decade. Here, they’ve performed at Axe and the Oak Whiskey House, Wild Goose Meeting House, Kinship Landing, COATI Uprise, the Colorado Wine Festival in Manitou Springs and the MeadowGrass Music Festival in Black Forest. They also perform at weddings, banquets and private events.
“Grace and Gordon are truly exceptional,” says Ryan Flores, local musician, singer and performer. “Gordon is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer—but really shreds the guitar. Grace has an excellent sense of melody and a great instinct for improvisation—with an infectious sense of wonder.”
CLASSICALLY TRAINED OLD-TIME, TRADITIONAL SOUNDS Decade in the Springs
“I’ve known Roma Ransom for three years, since hosting yard concerts,” says Sue Daugherty. “Their music is magical and uplifting. I have nothing but great things to say about Grace and Gordon.”
Website: Instagram:Facebook:romaransom.bandcamp.com@romaransommusic@romaransom
“These are rhythms and melodies that date back to the 1700s and further— and from cultures further east than Western Europe,” says Easley. “We want to play music that people have to think about and be engaged with.”
Three Roma Ransom EPs are available for lis tening on Spotify: Isolation (2020), Hiraeth (2019) and Roma Ransom (2015).
Easley and Lewis have a sincere love for enriching lives with their repertoire of old-time, traditional sounds from Eastern European cultures. They form a transcending style with sonic landscapes that transports an audience.
The two trained classically while young—Easley on violin and viola and Lewis primarily on guitar. “I had a desire at an early age to be a musician; it was something that called to me,” Easley says. “I attribute it to Minnesota Public Television; they always had symphony concerts airing and I was like, I want to do that! ”
Lewis also grew up in the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” He fell head over heels with guitar when he discovered Nirvana while surrounded by folk. In the 19th century, immigrants brought folk music from their home lands—and today, Celtic, German, Scandinavian and Eastern European influences remain part of Minnesota’s musical vernacular. However, Lewis and Easley didn’t meet in Minnesota, but in Missouri, while busking in Springfield. Easley was attending Missouri State and Lewis was at a private school. They began spending increasing time play ing music together. Eventually, they left the Ozarks and lived a bohemian life busking in California, solidifying their sound on the streets.

“My wife and I live on the westside and host concerts in our home, Casa DeVilbiss,” says Gary Coleman. “Five years ago, while at our favorite breakfast spot, Adam’s Mountain Cafe, Roma Ransom performed. Since then, Grace and Gordon have played our annual October concert....I appreciate their individual virtuosities and col lective passion to create a compelling vibe.”
“Together, they create rich, textural soundscapes, weaving influ ences from over the world,” continues Flores. “I’m fond of their swirling Hungarian and Romanian melodies over hypnotic, primal rhythms.”
Easley and Lewis make music for a living through performing, teaching lessons, collabo rating with yoga instructors and licensing tunes to brands such as Huckberry, Pure Michigan, Patagonia, Bud Light and Vice

“The store has always had something special about it, and to Carrie and me, it was important to keep the atmosphere true to its roots. We always want Terra Verde to be an inviting, inclusive, and just a really happy place to be,” Leah explains.
Much like the hearts behind it, the boutique has a warm, wel coming, and eclectic feel to it. It’s hard not to smile here.
“So much of the atmosphere of the boutique has to do with our incredible staff. They love this community and store so much,” she said.
Leah and Carrie purchased Terra Verde in January of 2020, right before the pandemic.

Nearly 30 years ago, Chris Sondermann opened Terra Verde as a women’s clothing boutique. Since then, it has evolved and grown, establishing itself as a forever downtown Colorado Springs staple. When the time came for Sondermann to hand off her passion project, she approached two longtime employees and Colorado Springs natives: Leah Fitzgerald Riehl and Carrie Hibbard. Leah and Carrie jumped at the opportunity to buy Terra Verde.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
“Grounding and thriving” are the first words that pop into my head when I step into Terra Verde Boutique downtown, which is fitting for a name that roughly translates into “green earth.” And when you do an even deeper dive into the story behind it, it’s tough to imagine a better name for this flourishing local treasure.
“We definitely had to get creative, and we were so grateful to our customers who were intentional about supporting the bou tique even through shutdowns. So many contributed by shopping online, and we would even facetime clients and customers help ing them pick out pieces and shipping it to them or having them safely pick up their purchases.” Leah explains, “It really made us realize how special this community is and we are so fortunate to be the epitome of a boutique success story even through uncer tain times. It’s truly a testament to our customer’s loyalty and the community we’ve been able to foster with Terra Verde.”
Terra Verde carries an assortment of styles that cater to a vari ety of tastes, and Leah and Carrie have been purposeful in making sure Terra Verde has something to offer for every aesthetic.

“Inclusivity is something we value, and we want our customers to feel and under stand that when they walk in,” she explains.
In Terra Verde, you will find beautiful things, warm conversation, and a wel coming place to linger. “Ultimately, it’s our goal is to create an experience that is more than just about the products we sell. We want our store to be full of community, fun, inclusive, and it’s our greatest hope that every customer walks out feeling bet ter than when they came in.”
“Community is beautiful,” Leah explains, “and that’s the motto we live by here at Terra Verde.”

You Deserve a Break ARTICLE BY ROCHELLE REEDER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAIGE ROBISON, SARA PLETT HAIR CARE | BEAUTY Let Blush Dry Bar Pamper You 40

Brandi Martinez was working as a stylist at a local salon when her allergy to chemicals in the products became too overwhelming. In an effort to still practice her passion while minding her health and the health of her customers, she opened Blush Dry Bar in Colorado Springs.
“Booking time at Blush is also a great opportunity to get dolled up with friends before a night out on the town or even to get pampered before a family photo shoot or a date night.”
Martinez notes they have recently added spray tan as a service, and all of these services can be provided with a beverage in hand as Martinez has acquired a liquor license for her establishment. They really do provide the full package.

Martinez and her staff have served brides and bridal par ties, those attending military balls, prom and other special occasions. Booking time at Blush is also a great opportu nity to get dolled up with friends before a night out on the town or even to get pampered before a family photo shoot or a date night. The possibilities are endless – and you deserve a break.
See a need, meet a need. The everyday can be a grind. And it takes time and effort to look and feel your best. Work, school and chores are usually the bare minimum. Then there’s making sure you are feeding yourself (and maybe a family) the appropriate number of square meals a day, sleeping enough but not too much, and drinking the allotted amount of water that will keep you appropriately hydrated. All of this while also chauffeuring everyone around town, meeting deadlines, attending appointments – oh, and don’t forget sunscreen. For some, that doesn’t leave bandwidth in the day to make the extra effort of makeup or hairstyling. Perhaps, post-pandemic, those skills are a little out of practice.
Blush provides hairstyling and makeup services; they also specialize in lash extensions and application.

EAT RIGHT | FOOD + BEVERAGE Local Leafy Greens, Grown for Community ARTICLE BY KAREN MITCHELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW FISK Emerge Aquaponics Boasts 20,000 Square Feet of Greenhouses 44

Emerge Aquaponics is just off of Shoup Road after entering the Forest’s territory. It boasts a set of greenhouses that extend over 20,000 square feet. Inside their humid domes, there is an entire aqua ponics system that saves 80 percent of water use while they grow their leafy greens! With the help of a few dozen volunteers, they’re proud to be able to make donations to organizations like the Springs Rescue Mission. Emerge Aquaponics welcomes the community by way of school tours and neighborhood and family volunteers helping to harvest their lettuce and to help keep the operation growing. Any day of the week, the public is welcome to stop by their farmer’s stand to buy some greens; how ever, they’re harvested and most fresh on Tuesdays and Fridays. If you’re a farmer’s market fan, you can stop by their stand at the Old Colorado City or Black Forest’s farmer’s markets.
The expansive Black Forest that kisses the border of Colorado Springs holds dozens, maybe hundreds of farms. Big. Small. Private. Commercial. All sourcing incredibly healthy, wonderfully flavorful food grown by people with passion and patience for growing produce at high altitudes.

Archery is for Everyone
ARTICLE BY SYDNEY E. NELSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY ARCHERY SCHOOL OF THE ROCKIES SCHOOL OF THE ROCKIES BELIEVES NO DREAM IS TOO BIG
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
“It all started when I overheard a coach suggest to my granddaughter during an archery lesson that she shouldn’t bother dreaming as big as the Olympics.” -Karin Bock To Karin Bock, no dream is too big for anyone–a characteristic belief reflective of many years as a coach and mentor for other sports. Archery may have been new to Bock, but fueled by the belief that every dream was attainable, she immersed herself in the sport by taking classes and seminars, mastering archery to the highest level she could. She envisioned establish ing a place where people could excel to whatever level they aspired to.
That vision came to life when Bock opened Archery School of the Rockies. From humble beginnings with only a few students who wanted to learn more about the sport, it has organically evolved into the thriving school and archery range it is today.

“That’s the beauty of archery, it’s so inclusive.

It levels the playing field because anyone can do it, and everyone is always welcome, encouraged, and empowered to be able to experience one of the world’s oldest sports,” Bock explains.
VOLUNTEER-BASED Archery School of the Rockies is a volunteer-based organization. They believe it’s imperative to give back to the community that’s given so much to them.
