KIDS & PETS

This is a GAME-CHANGER! No needles. No fillers. No surgery. No downtime.

How it works:

EMFACE uses synchronized radiofrequency (RF) and high-intensity facial muscle stimulation (HIFES) to lift, tone, and smooth—naturally boosting collagen and elastin, while strengthening the underlying facial muscles. This means tighter skin, reduced wrinkles, and restored structure… without surgery, needles, or downtime.

∙ It treats both the skin and the underlying muscle, something filler can’t do.

∙ It strengthens the levator and orbicularis oculi muscles, lifting the brow and tightening skin for a brighter, more open look.

∙ It improves natural volume loss without risking puffiness, migration, or overcorrection like filler sometimes can.

∙ It’s a non-invasive alternative to blepharoplasty or laser resurfacing, making it ideal for clients not ready—or not a candidate—for surgery.

Data-backed results:

Up to 26% increase in collagen | Up to 30% reduction in crow’s feet 23% more lifted facial structure | 64% reduction in dark circles

Welcome to Our Kids & Pets Issue!

Greetings, dear readers! How's your summer coming along so far?

Last weekend, my family joined hundreds of our neighbors across Norman in the citywide garage sale, which for some reason, is always held at the peak of the summer heat. It was an opportunity to rid my house of an accumulation of "stuff," some mine, some other family members'. It was not only a big step toward at a much-needed deep clean, but an opportunity to at last share some of my late mother's (Betty Culpepper's) beautiful hand-thrown pottery. We sold the pieces at a very low price to people who truly appreciated her artwork, knowing my mother would smile at the thought of her work being shared and appreciated. Here's a peek at what's inside this issue:

• For many children in our community, The Studio of The Sooner Theatre has become a place to grow their creative talents, but for one local woman's 10-year-old foster daughter, the Studio has become a welcome new family full of opportunity for her to find her voice. Read this touching and inspirational story starting on p. 28.

• Most parents want to dress their children well, especially during the school year, as well as for special occasions. (Summertime, of course, is more casual.)

But as every parent knows, quality clothes don't come cheap, especially when one takes into account the short amount of time they will wear them before outgrowing them! Enter Just Between Friends and JBF-Norman and JBFEdmond founder Kathy Winslow. Learn more about this popular event, which also offers clothing accessories, toys, games, books, strollers, and so much more, and Kathy in our story starting on p. 20.

• Each year, Pioneer Library System identifies a critical topic in its communities and provides opportunities for exploration and discussion through the Spark a Change series, a systemwide initiative designed to spark curiosity, drive action and inspire positive transformation in community members and their communities. This year, PLS welcomes Leland Melvin—an American engineer, retired NASA astronaut and former NFL player—as the Spark a Change keynote speaker. See story, p. 24. There's a lot more of interest inside. Why don't you take a load off and enjoy the issue? Happy summer, everyone!

Sam Noble Museum to Open 'The Spirit of Tequila' Exhibit

The Sam Noble Museum will present Aliento a Tequila (or  The Spirit of Tequila), an exhibit exploring and celebrating the landscape, culture and traditions that gave birth to tequila, Mexico’s mestizo national drink. The exhibit, which runs through Aug. 30-Oct. 19, features photos by Joel Salcido, who traveled across the state of Jalisco capturing images of distilleries and artisanal tequileras, revealing not only the tequila-making process but also the region’s traditions of culture and religion.

'Dolores' Skull at the Sam Noble Museum

Aquilops americanus, a ceratopsian dinosaur whose only known fossil specimen can be found at the Sam Noble Museum, is prominently featured in the new movie Jurassic World: Rebirth . (The little dino is called Doloros.) In recognition of this, the city of Norman officially proclaimed  June 29 to July 5, 2025, as Natural History Week. ‘COOL OFF WITH A CLAIM’ THIS SUMMER

OKLAHOMA STATE TREASURER ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO SEARCH FOR UNCLAIMED PROPERTY

As Oklahomans embrace the summer season, the Oklahoma State Treasurer’s Office is encouraging residents to take a moment to check for unclaimed property, financial assets that may have been forgotten, misplaced or simply overlooked.

The Treasurer’s Office currently holds more than $1.4 billion in unclaimed assets belonging to current and former Oklahoma residents. These funds can include forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, utility deposits and more.

“Summer can be a slower season for many: school’s out, routines shift and people finally find time to catch up on things they’ve put off,” said Oklahoma State Treasurer Todd Russ.

“It’s the perfect moment to check and see if there’s unclaimed money waiting for you or someone in your family.”

You can also search for close family members, including loved ones who have passed away, as some assets may still be claimed by their heirs or designated representatives. The Unclaimed Property Program is one of several ways the Treasurer’s Office helps Oklahomans protect and recover their assets.

Searching is fast, free and secure at YourMoney. ok.gov. All you need is your name to get started. The entire claims process can be completed online.

For more information or to begin your search, visit YourMoney.ok.gov

Mind-ful Therapy

Device Offers Relief From Depression, Anxiety and Even Compulsive Behaviors

What if you could find relief from depression, anxiety and even compulsive behaviors – and it could all be done painlessly and virtually effortlessly in a few weeks’ time?

In addition to its wide array of health care treatments and products for men and women, Premier Healthcare ( PremierHealthcareok. com) is now offering a new treatment called Exomind, which is based on a long-established technology called “TMS” or transcranial magnetic stimulation, first developed in 1985.

Dr. Amber N. Redding-Slootheer, DNP, APRN-CNP, a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and co-owner of Premier Healthcare (with husband Roy M. Slootheer, APRN-CNP), explains that, with this technology, “a coil creates a magnetic field that uses gentle electric currents on the brain – a process called “long-term potentiation.”

This process, Redding-Slootheer said, boosts neuron activity and improves communication between the neurons in the DLPFC (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), the area of the brain that regulates mood and other emotional processes, which can improve emotional well-being. Exomind is FDA approved for the treatment of depression and can also improve anxiety, OCD and compulsive eating, she added.

A SHORT HISTORY

Exomind was created by scientists at BTL, a Prague-based company that is a world-leader in aesthetics. The company has over 200 patents and 500 in-house engineers who use medical technology and science to create advanced medical treatments.

“Older versions of TMS required the patient to wear a large, heavy magnetic helmet for

multiple hours-long sessions for about 30 days in a row, which was not convenient (or enjoyable) for patients,” she noted.

Extensive studies of the technology were conducted in the U.S. and Canada to prompt FDA approval for treatment of depression. It was also approved by Health Canada for treating anxiety, OCD and excessive eating disorders. Some Premier Healthcare patients may be eligible for insurance coverage of the treatments (depending on their insurance plan).

WHAT IT DOES, HOW IT WORKS

Exomind is designed to enhance neuroplasticity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The technique enhances the brain’s ability to form new connections and enhances communication between neurons.

“In other words,” Redding-Slootheer said, “it helps your brain form new, healthy connections in order to function better. Patients can expect to see improvements in depression symptoms, clearer thinking, enhanced feelings of calm/less anxiety, and decrease in compulsive behaviors—even those centered around over-eating.

“Patients have also reported an 85% satisfaction in greater willpower, emotional control and cognitive function in studies done by BTL after treatments with Exomind.”

Premier Healthcare now offers patients a fast, easy way to function better. (Photo provided)

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

Most people can benefit from the treatments, which are FDA approved for those age 21 and above, Redding-Slootheer said. However, with a few exceptions.

“Exomind can benefit a wide range of patients—from those seeking just general mental health and emotional support, to those specifically seeking help with depression and anxiety symptoms,” she said.

“It has been shown to help even those patients that have experienced medication-resistance to depression. It is a great treatment to even help with burnout, focus issues, or stress in general.”

Exomind is not approved for treatment of severe depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, and cannot be used by anyone with metal implants near the DLPFC or a seizure disorder.

TREATMENT DETAILS

“Treatments are 30 minutes long and recommended once weekly for six total sessions,” Redding-Slootheer said. “Exomind is completely painless, and patients will only feel a gentle vibration on the scalp during the treatments. There is no sedation

Among other things,

promotes enhanced feelings of calm and less anxiety.

Exomind treatments last 30 minutes, are painless, and require no downtime. (Photo provided)

or downtime, so patients can return to normal activities immediately after treatments.”

Redding-Slootheer calls Exomind “an amazing drug-free alternative for improvement of mental issues, since it actually targets the area in the brain that controls these functions.”

A device that reduces anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive behaviors, not to mention gaining clearer thinking? Sounds like a no-brainer (pun intended!). Visit with a Premier Healthcare professional to learn more.

TESTIMONIALS

“…No exaggeration, I tried at least 25 anti-depressants and countless therapies over the years and Exomind had an almost immediate effect and a lasting effect, which was quite wonderful.”-Ava “Exomind brought my joy back! I really felt that each treatment I felt it getting better and better, and my happiness, my joy, everything came back!”-Jennifer “I honestly do believe that Exomind has changed my life. Just overall happiness, that’s what I noticed, like immediately.”-Katherine

SMART MOMS KEEP CONSIGNMENT ‘JUST BETWEEN FRIENDS’

Trending Now: Children’s Clothing and Toys

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHELLE PIPES
“Consignment offers a feel-good way to align your values with your lifestyle—helping others while reducing waste.”

Just Between Friends children’s consignment sales in Oklahoma City, Norman and Edmond have become the cornerstone events for families seeking to buy or resell quality children's items. Held biannually—spring and fall—JBF offers the perfect opportunity to sell a vast selection of gently used, name-brand clothing, toys, books, and baby gear.

“The children's consignment market is a rapidly growing segment of the resale industry, with projections estimating that American parents will spend $12.8 billion on secondhand children's goods by 2030, with the most popular categories being clothing, toys, sports and outdoors, furniture, and shoes,” said Kathy Winslow, owner of the OKC Just Between Friends and founder of both the Norman and Edmond JBF sales.

In 1999, Kathy started the Norman JBF sale in her living room. It has since grown into three large-scale events that foster widespread community engagement across the metro. Consignors can earn up to 80% of their sales, and unsold items are donated to local charities, contributing to over $15 million in cash and in-kind donations nationwide.

“While consignment sales are often associated with budget-conscious shoppers, upper-class families find value in JBF through access to a curated selection of name-brand and boutique children's items, allowing families to find quality and luxury products at reduced prices,” said Kathy, who has been a driving force in the JBF

franchise for her efficient and effective processes and ideas that have helped to make JBF the number one children’s consignment sales franchise in the US.

Why do upper-class families choose consignment for their kids’ items over other resale options? In today’s era of conscious consumerism, sustainability and curated convenience, even upper-class families are turning to consignment sales as their preferred method for reselling children’s clothing, toys and gear.

While platforms like Facebook Marketplace, eBay or neighborhood yard sales still have their place, consignment sales—especially reputable ones like Just Between Friends— offer a unique combination of efficiency, value and social impact.

The top reason smart moms are choosing consignment sales is because of their minimal effort and hassle-free selling. Affluent families often prioritize time over money, and consignment sales streamline resale. Instead of photographing, pricing, listing, messaging and coordinating individual sales, consignment events let you tag everything once and drop it off. The sale organizers handle everything else: advertising, setup, customer service and even post-sale donations if you choose not to reclaim unsold items.

“JBF sales offer a polished, professional system that respects your time and simplifies the process,” Kathy explains.

CONTINUED >

“Families can earn significantly more on premium items than through casual resale platforms without needing to haggle. Also, JBF offers busy moms a Valet Tagging service where their items are picked up, tagged and dropped off at the sale for them. Our average Valet Tagging checks are around $500, with some consignors making more than $2,000 on their name-brand items.”

Consignment sales frequently offer a much higher return on quality items than garage sales or online platforms. Many sales—like Just Between Friends—let consignors earn up to 80% of the sale price. These events attract thousands of buyers looking for premium brands at fair prices, and gently used designer clothes, high-end strollers and boutique toys move quickly.

“Consignment offers a feel-good way to align your values with your lifestyle—helping others while reducing waste,” said Kathy, who partners with Infant Crisis Services and Agape Baptist Church community closet on items that are unsold and not picked up after each sale.

“Families who need help with children’s items benefit from every consignor who chooses to donate and has unsold items at the end of each sale.”

Sustainability and conscious consumption are priorities in many affluent households. Consigning is a smart way to keep items out of landfills while

passing them along to families who need and will cherish them. Plus, unsold items can often be donated directly to local nonprofits through the sale, creating a streamlined, meaningful way to give back.

Letting go of unused and outgrown items can be an emotional and logistical hurdle. However, consignment sales transform decluttering into a purposeful activity. Families know their beloved items will go to other children who need them—not just into a donation bin or storage unit. The hyper-organized, selective nature of JBF also preserves the dignity of high-quality items while adding sentimental value and a sense of closure to letting go.

Participating in consignment sales plugs families into a broader community of like-minded parents. For those who value networking and social capital, this is more than a financial transaction—it's a space to connect, support, and influence local family culture. Some families even shop and consign together, making it a seasonal tradition.

Just Between Friends offers a streamlined, profitable and socially responsible way to resell children's items with minimal stress and maximum impact. They provide more than just a payout; they offer a sense of community, purpose, and pride. Consignment makes sense whether you’re downsizing the playroom or making room for the next growth spurt.

LELAND MELVIN’S STORY TO INSPIRE CHANGE ACROSS PLS COMMUNITIES

Each year, Pioneer Library System identifies a critical topic in its communities and provides opportunities for exploration and discussion through the Spark a Change series. Spark a Change is a systemwide initiative designed to spark curiosity, drive action and inspire positive transformation in community members and their communities.

This year, PLS is honored to welcome Leland Melvin—an American engineer, retired NASA astronaut and former NFL player—as the Spark a Change keynote speaker. With a remarkable journey spanning professional sports, space exploration and education, Melvin exemplifies resilience, determination and the power of reinvention.

Melvin was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, and earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1986 from the University of Richmond, where he also played collegiate football. He went on to earn a master of science degree in materials science engineering from the University of Virginia in 1990.

Melvin was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1986, but his professional football career was thwarted by a hamstring injury. Rather than let that setback define him, he found a new dream. He joined NASA, braved an injury that nearly left him permanently deaf and still managed to muster the courage and resolve

to travel to space on the shuttle Atlantis to help build the International Space Station. Melvin’s problem-solving methods and can-do attitude turned his impossible-seeming dream into reality.

As the only NFL draftee to have flown in space, Melvin has become a symbol of what’s possible when perseverance meets purpose. His Detroit Lions jersey is now on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame—a homage to both his athletic and academic achievements. Through these professional experiences working on high-stakes teams, he developed a deep and nuanced understanding of effective team dynamics.

Through his bestselling memoirs Chasing Space and Chasing Space: Young Reader’s Edition , Melvin shares how his journey—from the football field to outer space—was shaped by curiosity, grit and a deep commitment to lifelong learning. He details the challenges he has faced, and how they ultimately led him to the International Space Center and a new perspective of life on Earth.

He uses his life story as an athlete, astronaut, scientist, engineer, photographer and musician to help inspire the next generation of explorers to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) careers. As part of the Spark a Change series, his message encourages community members to use their talents to tackle challenges and create lasting impact.

As part of this series, PLS provides free copies of Melvin’s Chasing Space and Chasing Space: Young Reader’s Edition to the public (while supplies last). Customers are encouraged to pick up a copy, then engage in Spark a Change book discussions and events.

“Our libraries are spaces for the public to gather, connect and learn,” says Aiden Street, PLS director of community engagement and learning.

“Spark a Change is an exciting time for all ages to come together and discuss a shared topic, like developing STEAM skills and careers in central Oklahoma.”

From Sept. 12–14, Melvin will visit various PLS locations, engaging with community members through author talks, book signings and interactive STEAM activities:

• Sept. 12: Melvin will appear at the Aviation Breakfast at Max Westheimer Airport, followed by an engaging conversation and Q&A at the Tecumseh Public Library.

• Sept. 13: He will take part in a moderated discussion and book signing at the Gordon Cooper Technology Center in Shawnee.

• Sept. 14: His visit will end with a special children’s STEAM event at the Newcastle Public Library, where he’ll discuss the importance of early career exploration and STEAM education.

Melvin’s story of GRIT, hard-work and dedication is inspiring to those of all ages. His personal journey from the

gridiron to the stars examines the intersecting roles of community, perseverance and grace that align to create opportunities for success.

Melvin’s presence will undoubtedly inspire community members to pursue their passions and embrace change. His experience demonstrates the potential for individuals to explore their interests and achieve success in various fields. Perfectly aligning with PLS’s signature initiative to inspire curiosity, drive action, and encourage positive transformation. Melvin shows how setbacks can lead to new beginnings.

PLS is deeply committed to enhancing social wellbeing through equitable access to reliable resources, digital literacy and lifelong learning opportunities. By hosting community-centered events and fostering open dialogue, PLS helps build stronger, more connected, and more informed communities.

Founded in 1958, PLS today offers full-access libraries in 10 communities throughout Cleveland, McClain and Pottawatomie counties, as well as additional access locations in smaller communities and outreach services, including Business Services and the PLS Mobile Maker Lab.

HIDDEN TALENTS

The Studio of The Sooner Theatre Helps Foster Daughter Find Her Voice

ARTICLE BY NANCY COGGINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WHITNEY STILWELL, RED STILETTO PHOTOGRAPHY

For many children in our community, The Studio of The Sooner Theatre has become a place to grow their creative talents, but for Dinah Joyner Gantz’s 10-year-old foster daughter, CW (full name withheld to protect her identity), the Studio has become a welcome new family full of opportunity for her to find her voice.

“When CW came to us, she had no social skills. All she knew was to take care of her autistic sister and making sure they are both safe from their parents,” Dinah said. “Nobody cared about the talents hidden in this child.”

So, Dinah, looking for ways to allow CW to explore and be the child she is, enrolled CW into classes at The Studio of The Sooner Theatre. Over the next several months, CW took a dance class, voice lessons and participated in a production class that ended in a full-scale production of The Little Mermaid JR

“Since she has become a part of (The Sooner) theater family, she has learned to relax, trust adults, make friends and be a part of a group, Dinah said.

“She is learning to regulate herself around peers as she explores the fact that good things come to you if you work hard.”

CW’s hard work had to start where most of her other peers already were: in learning the basics of social interactions and trust. Those foundational skills were being honed as she also learned how to express herself through imaginative play, song and dance.

“CW has started taking pride in herself and her behaviors while working hard to become better at singing, dancing and acting that she loves so much,” Dinah shared.

Jennifer Baker, CW’s voice instructor and Sooner Theatre executive director, said, “I have had a front-row seat watching CW’s fight to find the talented little girl she is. Her joy and confidence have really grown this year as her trust in us and in herself has grown.”

This summer, CW’s hard work paid off as she auditioned for and earned a role in The Sooner Theatre’s production of The Music

Man JR , and CW’s foster mom has nothing but pride for the little girl who has learned so much.

In an email, she wrote, “Thank you to everybody who has helped CW find her spark, and thank you for always making her feel at home.”

The Studio of The Sooner Theatre begins enrollment for school-year classes in musical theatre, full-scale musical productions, acting, tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop and magic Aug. 18 for returning students and Aug. 20 for new students.

School-year classes at the Studio are for students age 3 through high school, with special needs classes available for students in 6th grade and up. The Studio of The Sooner Theatre’s scholarship program is available for students who need assistance; last year, $68,000 in scholarships was awarded to 334 students.
