COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Recent sports or academic highlight?

I am a captain for the CCS cheer squad. I am so thankful for this opportunity as it has allowed me to help grow and develop my teammates along with strengthening my own leadership skills. During my time on the cheer team, we have won four state titles. I have maintained a 4.0 grade average, I am a member of NHS, and will graduate as a salutatorian of my class. So far in our soccer season, we are undefeated and hope to win the state finals.

Personal highlights?

My name is Mikalin Doan and my parents are Andria Lim and Steven Doan. I have played soccer since I was seven years old and have been cheering for the past four years. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, traveling, photography, and strengthening my walk with God. I have a huge heart for animals, especially my dog Charley.

How do you maintain balance?

I have to find balance throughout the year with cheer lasting through both fall and spring semesters, which also runs into my soccer season. I attend school until noon and then work on my concurrent class until I head back to practice in the afternoon. I stay organized by keeping a detailed planner and strive to always keep on top of things.

Plans for the future?

I am excited to be a Sooner and will start my 2024 fall semester at the University of Oklahoma! I plan to attend the School of Business and have received an academic scholarship.

Recent sports or academic highlight?

Winning the State Tournament with a 19 under par for the three rounds and winning an AJGA with -8 over three days this past summer.

Personal highlights?

My parents are James and Susan Bond. As a sophomore, I loved our legendary playoff run, reaching the basketball state championship with my brothers. I have a passion for golf and play all day every day no matter what conditions.

How do you maintain balance?

Golf is my life. I get away from golf with family vacations but I love the grind of golf. My school does a lot for me. They help me catch up on missed work when I am gone at an event and my parents have always stressed to me that school comes first.

Plans for the future?

I have plans to play golf at Oklahoma State University and major in business with the goal of playing on the PGA tour.

Welcome to the Ladies Issue!

Did you celebrate May Day as a child? In grade school here in Norman, I remember decorating and dancing around a May Pole on May Day, but today, I don't think it's celebrated much in this country.

Did you know that Maypole dancing is believed to have started in Roman Britain around 2,000 years ago, when soldiers celebrated the arrival of spring by dancing around decorated trees to thank their goddess Flora. In Great Britain, the tradi tion (using a ribbon-bedecked pole) is someone newer: only around 600 years old!

Our family also celebrated May Day by making small gift baskets, usually filled with flowers and, sometimes, vegetables from the garden, along with a smattering of other goodies, such as homebaked cookies. My sisters and I would deposit the baskets on a front porch, ring the doorbell, then run and hide, watching from undercover as the gift recipient opened the door and found the basket. Great fun! Does anyone still do this?

So, anyway ... welcome once again to our Ladies issue. For several years, the May issue has included a profile story showcasing some of our community's exceptional women leaders. This month, you'll read about a urogynecologist, a library supervisor, the owner of an upscale furniture shop and the CEO of a local nonprofit. Interesting reading! See story, page 42.

Looking for a great girls' getaway, one that's far enough away to make it feel like an adventure but not so far you have to book a flight? Travel writer Elaine Warner suggests our readers check out Fredericksburg, Texas, in the heart of Texas wine country, where she enjoyed pleasant accommodations at Hill Country Herb Garden & Spa. Find out why this makes such a perfect destination for a girls' getaway, but would also make a pretty cool couples' retreat. See story, page 28.

Make sure to also read about Hometown Hero Tammie Richard, who for four years, has helped fellow vets navigate the tricky federal system to obtain their deserved benefits as an accredited volunteer veterans service officer for Norman's American Legion Post #88.

Those are just some highlights from this, the May Ladies issue. We'd like to offer up a special "thank you" to our valued women advertisers and readers this month. Next month, we'll shine the light on some exceptional men in the community!

Meet Entrepreneur Donna Miller

AMONG THE MANY

“The

thing I love about entrepreneurship is that you are in control of your own destiny. It is scary and it is hard. The freedom of entrepreneurship does not come without a price, and you must still work very hard, but I have found it to be worth it.”

Donna Miller, MBA, SPHR-SCP

Donna speaks from a wealth of personal experience on both women as entrepreneurs and as leaders. She is co-founder and CEO of Purse Power Inc. ( PursePower. com), based in Edmond, where she works to help women nationwide use their trillions of dollars of collective economic power to create, support and improve opportunities for women and girls. She also is the chief growth officer for human capital management at Xyant Services ( Xyant.com), based in Norman.

Donna boasts over 30 years of hands-on experience as an entrepreneur and executive in Fortune 500 companies in the computer, telecom, cable and energy industries. Additionally, she is an award-winning talent management consultant and a formally trained executive coach who has spent the past 15 years as an entrepreneur doing executive

coaching, leadership development, strategic facilitation and team building.

“As a mother of triplets,” she said, “I entered the entrepreneurial world when I had three young children at home and a highly demanding VP job working 70-plus hours per week. I left corporate America, in part, because I was missing my children’s childhood and needed to have a more flexible way of supporting my family.”

The children—triplets Sean, Anastasiya and Seth Miller, now 24—came along 15 years into her marriage to childhood sweetheart Kurt. “I tell my children that I won the baby lottery. I could not feel more blessed.”

In April, Donna led the World Café session of Oklahoma City University’s Women in Leadership Conference, held at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Open discussions focused on ways to improve women’s lives in the state.

Donna observed that, for example, “We were recently ranked 51st (including the District of Columbia) on the Wallet Hub’s rating of ‘Women’s Economic & Social WellBeing’ and ‘Women’s Health Care & Safety.’ I believe it is high time to change this and we, collectively, have the power to do it.”

SO, YOU WANT TO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR?

Donna enthusiastically shared with Lifestyle readers advice for would-be or fledgling women entrepreneurs:

• Embrace Resilience: The journey of entrepreneurship is filled with challenges and setbacks. Embrace resilience by viewing failures as stepping stones to success. Persist through adversity, and remain flexible, adapting your strategies, as necessary.

• Seek Out Mentorship and Networking: Build relationships with mentors who have walked the path before you. Their insights and guidance can be invaluable, helping you navigate obstacles and make informed decisions. Additionally, immerse yourself in networks of likeminded professionals. Networking can open doors to new opportunities, partnerships and resources.

• Highlight Your Unique Value Proposition: Understand and communicate what sets your business apart. Your unique perspective as a female entrepreneur can be a significant strength, offering fresh approaches and solutions to industry challenges.

• Prioritize Work-Life Balance: While the drive to succeed is important, no one ever looks back on their life while on their deathbed wishing that they spent more time at work. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for longterm success and well-being. Set boundaries, delegate tasks when possible, and make time for self-care.

• Leverage Technology and Social Media: Utilize technology and social media to reach a wider audience, market your products or services, and streamline your business operations. Being tech-savvy can significantly enhance your business’s efficiency and visibility.

DONNA MILLER

• Stay Informed and Continuously Learn: The business world is ever-evolving. Stay informed about your industry, market trends and emerging technologies. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning and be open to acquiring new skills that can benefit your business.

• Advocate for Yourself and Others: Don’t shy away from promoting your achievements and advocating for your needs, whether it’s in negotiation settings or in seeking fair opportunities. Furthermore, support other women in business by creating opportunities, offering mentorship, and fostering a community of mutual support.

• Believe in Your Vision: Confidence in your vision and capabilities is contagious. Believe in the value you bring and remain committed to your goals. This conviction will not only propel you forward but will also inspire confidence in your team, customers, and stakeholders.

• Resources: Accelerators and business incubators, SCORE (retired executives that will advise you for free), the SBA, NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners), Enterprising Woman Magazine and WPO, the Women President’s Organization are there to assist you.

PURSE POWER

The idea for Purse Power was born during a vacation to Miami taken by the Babcock sisters: Donna and Drs. Karen Nern and Phyllis “Freddi” Pennington.

“Our mother was a brilliant, beautiful nursing professor, author and activist who was also a survivor as an adolescent. All three of us have MBAs and two are medical doctors. Our mother raised us to be strong, independent women. Her battle cry was ‘To whom much is given, much is expected.’ We have all taken this to heart and want to make a difference in this world.”

As the sisters discussed what could be done to drive positive change, “we realized that the power was already in women’s hands,” Donna said. “If we could get women to use their enormous economic power to buy from companies that actively create opportunities for women and develop a funding stream for battered women’s shelters in the process, we could shatter glass ceilings and change lives.”

They took their concept for Purse Power to friends and colleagues, and on Jan. 21, 2017, Donna and several of her friends— armed with pins and buttons inscribed “Purse Power - We have it. Let’s use it”—joined in the historic Women’s March in Washington, D.C., as well as other marches across the country. In August of that year, Purse Power Inc. was formed.

“We gave away 30,000 pins in three hours, and they have since traveled all over the world,” Donna said. “One of them has even made it into the hands of the Smithsonian, and they are putting it in their African American exhibit!”

She explained the statistics behind the need for an organization like Purse Power:

“Despite women making between 73-85% of all purchasing decisions, holding trillions of dollars in spending power and influencing 67% of investment decisions, our representation in senior leadership roles remains disproportionately low. Although

it is getting better, we hold only 8.2% of CEO positions and around 32% of board seats.

The transition of wealth is also becoming increasingly relevant to the mission of this Edmond-based organization.

Morgan Stanley highlights that by 2030, women are expected to control a large share of the $30 trillion in financial assets currently owned by baby boomers, Donna noted, adding that women are not just the main recipients of this wealth transfer; they tend to outlive men by about five years, significantly expanding their impact on investment capital, voting rights and the governance of corporations.

With the financial sector adapting to this transition, Purse Power is committed to encouraging women to leverage their substantial economic influence to foster positive societal shifts by endorsing companies that actively support women, according to Donna.

This substantial transfer of wealth to women is seen as a pivotal moment for societal transformation, especially because of women’s leanings towards philanthropy, making ethical investments, and backing initiatives that aim for gender equality. With women controlling a major slice of the world’s wealth, their investment choices could help resolve deep-rooted social issues, encourage responsible business operations, and stimulate inclusive economic progress.

Donna’s mission in life is to make a difference for women.

Through Purse Power and her many other endeavors, including partnering with her co-founders to deliver the OKC Women in Leadership Conference each year, speaking to Fortune 500 Women’s Employee Resources Groups, acting as an advisor to the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women and playing her role as the Women Presidents’ Organization Virtual Midwest Chapter co-chair, Donna is fulfilling the life purpose voiced from a mother to her three daughters many years ago: “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

Fit BodyBoot Camp

AN UNMATCHED FITNESS EXPERIENCE

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | FITNESS

“THE COACHES REMIND US THAT WE ARE ALL BUILT DIFFERENTLY AND THAT WHAT YOU PUT IN, YOU WILL GET OUT.”

Meg Wimberly is a caring mother, dedicated daughter and newly minted juris doctor graduate of Oklahoma City University. After passing the bar in 2022, she is now running her own law firm in Oklahoma City.

Meg originally joined Fit Body Boot Camp in 2017 but had to stop attending for personal reasons.

“When I returned to Fit Body Boot Camp in 2022, they accepted me back with open arms and enthusiasm. It was exactly what I needed as I finished law school and started a new journey,” Meg explains.

“When I started back, I started losing weight and feeling myself grow stronger. I really felt like I was able to reclaim a part of myself that had been missing.”

Meg benefited from Fit Body Boot Camp’s focus on creating a strong and supportive community that helps participants reach— and surpass—their fitness goals and become the best possible version of themselves.

By committing herself to hard work—and with gratitude for the hard-working boot camp coaches and members—Meg has been able to attain, and even surpass, her original fitness goals.

“At Fit Body Boot Camp, you are part of a community that really feels like family. The coaches and members alike all cheer each other on, ask how life is going and really make you feel important,” Meg says.

Top right: Meg visits with Tommy McCaslin, owner of Fit Body Boot Camp in Moore.

TOMMY MCCASLIN

OWNER, FIT BODY BOOT CAMP, MOORE

In 2015, when Tommy McCaslin opened the Fit Body Boot Camp franchise in Moore, his vision was to create a space devoted to boosting people’s self-image and confidence through personalized coaching, fitness support and nutritional guidance.

One of the most important steps in achieving those goals, he said, is building and cultivating a strong community of dedicated staff members.

“Sure, people love our 30-minute workouts, but what really makes us different is that we are a coaching facility first. When you look at the people who have success and those who do not, it’s not that they need access to equipment—it’s that they need guidance, a friend and encouragement,” Tommy explains.

“I’m really proud to have developed a culture where people come and where they stick with FBBC, so that it becomes a way of life.”

Another important aspect of FBBC is guiding and educating clients on healthy and sustainable eating habits.

“We do three things at Fit Body well: food, workouts and coaching,” he says. “But coaching is our main thing. Our trained coaches help clients understand what’s important and guide them away from the dangers of non-sustainable food approaches. It’s what you do most of the time that gives you results, not what you do some of the time. It’s the habits that you build that give you the life-changing results.”

“I wanted to see that I could set my mind to something and do it, that I could meet my mini goals and major goals and keep growing, because I had the love and support of the Fit Body family behind me.”

Meg says one of the other keys to success for her was consistency, showing up for the workouts even when she didn’t want to.

“When first starting out, it is difficult,” she admits. “But once you build the habit, you want to continue working and being the best ‘you’ you can be.”

FBBC’s certified coaches tailor workouts and diet plans to best serve each client and ensure that they get the most out of participating in their 30-minute classes.

“At FBBC, I get 30 minutes per day to mentally check out from the stresses of the world—no interruptions, just focusing on myself and pushing to be the best I can be,” Meg says.

“I am constantly working out with people who will push me to go up in weight or keep moving even when I tire out. The coaches remind us that we are all built differently and that what you put in, you will get out.”

Over the course of her fitness journey, Meg has lost 38.7 lbs and 9.4% of her body fat.

“But I am most proud of the strength that I have gained during my fitness journey,” Meg explains.

“I feel stronger, which makes me more confident in everything I do. The most meaningful part of my journey has been reclaiming my whole self. Losing weight feels great, my clothes fit better, and I am more confident knowing I am strong and in control of my own body.”

GREAT GIRLS’ GETAWAY DESTINATION

FREDERICKSBURG, TEXAS: DIVERSE OFFERINGS INCLUDE WINE TASTINGS, SHOPPING, HISTORIC POINTS OF INTEREST AND (YEAH), LOTS OF FUN PLACES TO DINE

It was dusk. A soft breeze whisked away the heat of the day. I rocked slowly back and forth on the porch swing of my cottage, intoxicated by the sweet scent of moonflowers. Juice from an early-ripening peach dribbled down my chin. Could it get any better than this?

Top: Sweet-scented moonflowers bloom in front of a cottage at Hill Country Herb Garden and Spa in Fredericksburg, Texas.

Bottom: After WWII, Admiral Nimitz worked for reconciliation with Japan. The Garden of Peace was a gift to the museum from former Japanese officers and diplomats.
“Der Kuchen Laden is full of everything you need for the kitchen— and lots of things you didn’t know you needed until you stopped here.”

I was a guest at Hill Country Herb Garden and Spa (HillCountryHerbGarden. com) in the small town of Fredericksburg, Texas—one of my favorite getaways—and the perfect destination for a great girls’ trip.

The 14 cottages at Hill Country Herb Garden are reminiscent of the traditional Sunday houses, which early German settler-farmers built for their families coming to town for marketing and church on weekends. Each is perfect for two guests—and a European-style breakfast basket at the door is the perfect way to start the day. (If you have a group, they do have a large house that accommodates up to 16.)

You could spend your entire stay on the property, walking in the gardens, eating in the restaurant, taking a yoga class or luxuriating in a spa treatment. But there’s a lot to do and see in Fredericksburg.

Accommodations in town range from popular chain hotels, small motels, guesthouses and over 1,500 Airbnb properties. There are reasons this is such a popular destination.

Where to Stay Things to Do & Dining

Fredericksburg ( VisitFredericksburgTX.com) is in the heart of Texas wine country, with 50 wineries in the county alone. You’ll find several tasting rooms on Main Street, or you can make your own wine trail in the surrounding hill country. Several companies conduct wine tours if you’re worried about drinking and driving.

Bottom: Like Grandma Daisy’s, many of the 150 businesses in the downtown district are in historic buildings.

Shopping is one of the major activities of visitors. Main Street is packed chock-a-block with shops, including excellent art galleries like Gallery 330 and Insight Gallery, and two of my favorite shops, Der Kuchen Laden and Chocolat.

Der Kuchen Laden is full of everything you need for the kitchen—and lots of things you didn’t know you needed until you stopped here. Chocolat owner Lecia Duke is the only chocolatier in the United States who uses a centuries-old, European technique to create chocolates filled with liquid liqueurs and wine.

You could spend several days just shopping on Main Street, but there are special treats elsewhere, too. Across the street from one another on Lincoln are two of these.

Blackchalk Home and Laundry, in a historic building, carries new and vintage home décor, furniture, lighting, accessories and more. Carol Hicks Bolton Antiquities specializes in imported items from France. From fine linens to antique signs to even taxidermized animals, merchandise here will fascinate—if not inspire—you.

Further afield, Wildseed Farm, the nation’s largest working wildflower farm, is not only a gorgeous place to see but a great spot to shop for gifts, décor, pottery and native plants.

History

Fredericksburg is also rich in history. Learn about its early German settlement—and the treaty between the settlers and the Comanche Nation, the only U.S./ Native American treaty never to have been broken—at the Pioneer Museum.

The town was also the birthplace of Admiral Chester Nimitz. An elaborate steamboat-style, wooden structure on Main Street is a reconstruction of a hotel owned by the admiral’s grandfather. The building is part of the National Museum of the Pacific War, which encompasses the Admiral Nimitz Museum, the Admiral Nimitz Bookstore, The George H.W. Bush Gallery (the extensive museum on World War II in the Pacific), the Plaza of the Presidents and the Japanese Garden of Peace. This complex is a destination all by itself.

If your time is limited, get a good overview by booking a narrated history tour with Fredericksburg Trolley Tours. Book online ahead of time to be sure you can get a reservation.

More Dining Options

Of course, eating is a part of any good trip, and Fredericksburg has plenty of options.

For breakfast: The Caliche Coffee Bar food menu is not extensive, but I can attest to the avocado toast with avocado, seven-minute eggs, pickled onions, pepitas and blistered tomato confit on toasted, locally made sourdough bread.

For a wider selection—and some more traditional dishes—check out the Old German Bakery on Main Street. For breakfast with a Tex-Mex kick, try Hilda’s Tortillas.

Lunch provides more options; two I would suggest: Vaudeville Bistro and Eaker Barbecue. I love Vaudeville for its French feel and great charcuterie selections. And I loved the Reuben sandwich with Brussels sprout kraut (and I normally won’t eat Brussels sprouts).

Lance and Boo Eaker married his South Texas-style barbecue with Boo’s Korean background, giving the menu selections a decidedly different—and altogether yummy— twist.

Dinner choices range from pizza at West End Pizza and fancier Italian fare at Alla Compagna to Cabernet Grill Texas Wine Country Restaurant with superb seafood and steaks and an extensive list of Texas wines.

Miscellaneous

For something special, schedule a class at Fischer and Wieser Cooking School. Whether it’s a demonstration class or participation class, each session ends with a full meal and wine paring.

Be sure and stop in Das Peach Haus and look at all the F&W jellies, jams and sauces. One of the bestsellers: Roasted Raspberry Chipotle Sauce. I stock up on that and their Champagne Honey Mustard.

Bottom: Fresh roasted coffee is a big draw at Caliche Coffee, but their small, but choice, menu is also tempting.
However you get there, you won’t regret it, and before you leave, you’ll be planning a trip back.

Driving is the best way to get to Fredericksburg. The fastest route is I-44 to Wichita Falls, then Highway 16 south. You’ll avoid the DFW metroplex mess this way.

However you get there, you won’t regret it, and before you leave, you’ll be planning a trip back. And if you go mid-May through mid-August, you’ll get to taste the best peaches anywhere. Georgia, eat your heart out!

Channeling Spring

Librarian’s List of Recommended Spring Reads, All Written by Women

When I think about spring, I think about two things: nature and new beginnings. So, while compiling this list, all by women writers, I wanted to find some books that channeled one or both of these ideas— love of the world around us—and also maybe trying something new.

Something about each of the books captured part of spring for me, and I hope they can for you, too!

TOM LAKE

When I happen into a conversation with another person who has read Tom Lake, one or both of us eventually end

up saying, “Isn’t it just so lovely?” and then we both agree and sit silently remembering how lovely this book is.

Tom Lake is the story of a former actress, Lara, telling the story of her youthful whirlwind romance with an extremely famous actor to her daughters as they pick fruit at their family’s cherry orchard while in COVID lockdown during the early pandemic.

WORLD OF WONDERS: IN PRAISE OF FIREFLIES, WHALE SHARKS, AND OTHER ASTONISHMENTS

World of Wonders is a perfect little gem of a book for people who love fun facts, but also love beautiful writing. Each essay highlights a distinct species of animal, but the author Aimee Nezhukmtathil (an award-winning poet), applies these animal facts to remembrances of her own life, creating a sort of National Geographic article/memoir that is captivating.

Also, there are stunning illustrations of select creatures, which is a huge bonus.

THE BEATRYCE PROPHECY

I am an adult person who thinks everyone can learn something from reading children’s books. This book, by the brilliant Kate DiCamillo, is a medieval tale of a young girl named Beatryce, who is found at a monastery with little to no memory of who she is, but knowing she has a mission that the reigning king does not want her to succeed in.

The nature link in this one? A hardheaded, fearsome goat named Answelica with a heart of gold who protects our hero on her journey. My mother and I read this book together and talked about it for days.

WEAVING SUNDOWN IN A SCARLET LIGHT: FIFTY POEMS FOR FIFTY YEARS

Poetry always makes me reflective, so I love to read a collection in the spring, a season of renewal and rebirth.

This Joy Harjo collection gathers poetry from across 50 years of her writing, often pulling from nature’s effect on life. If

poetry scares you a bit, great news! This collection includes notes from Joy on the inspiration for each piece.

QUIETLY HOSTILE

“Quietly hostile” is how I would describe Oklahoma spring as a person with seasonal allergies. It is also how author Samantha Irby describes herself in this book.

With essays that range from non-ironic impassioned praise of Dave Matthews Band to lists of every place that the author has accidentally peed her pants, Irby’s writing feels like if your most foul-mouthed, dryly witty friend wrote a book of every thought they had at 2 in the morning.

TO BOLDLY GROW: FINDING JOY, ADVENTURE, AND DINNER IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD

I am not a gardener, but I come from a family of gardening types, so I find people talking about gardening very comforting.

Enter Tamar Haspel, a journalist who decided, alongside her husband, to start growing their own “first-hand” food, despite having no prior gardening knowledge.

Part memoir of the experience and part helpful tips, this book is great for anyone who has thought about growing their own food and super-relatable and humorous for those who have tried to and failed, then tried again.

SHARK HEART

Oklahoma author Emily Habeck’s debut novel, Shark Hearts, takes the idea of becoming one with nature to the next level.

Weeks after Wren and Lewis get married, Lewis gets some unfortunate news: he has a rare genetic disease that is causing him to turn into a great white shark. The novel uses short, poetic vignettes to follow Wren and Lewis’s lives, together and separately, as they reel from this inexplicable, fantastical hurdle in their marital bliss.

If you are wanting to try something totally new this spring, this may be the one. (Bonus: Emily is from my hometown of Ardmore!)

Tammie Richard
Navy Vet Turned Jewelry Designer Is Living Her Best Life
38
U.S. Navy veteran Tammie Richard is an accredited volunteer veterans service officer for Norman's American Legion Post #88. (Mel Drake Photography)

When you walk into Norman’s American Legion Post #88, chances are that one of the first things you’ll encounter is a welcoming smile from Tammie Richard.

For four years, Tammie has been an accredited volunteer veterans service officer for the Post, where she helps her fellow vets navigate the tricky federal system to obtain their deserved benefits. She herself spent eight years in the service, from 1986 to 1994.

After graduating from Patricia Stevens Career College in St. Louis with a certification in hotel management and accounting, followed by a brief career in the hotel industry, Tammie decided to enter the U.S. Navy at age 19. Her decision was influenced by two uncles who served in the Navy, as well as stories about her disabled Army veteran father, who died when she was only 4.

While extremely meaningful, her time in the service was only the beginning. You name it, odds are Tammie has done it, from the employment perspective.

She’s held positions ranging from hotel management to office manager for Norman Christian Academy and office manager assistant with Bentley Turf Farms, plus stints as an administrative assistant, office accountant, babysitter and even a flooring salesperson. Her career also included 12 years as the purchasing/logistics coordinator for Top of the World, a ball cap production company in Norman.

Now a jewelry designer and photographer, Tammie is the proprietor of Ophelia Lamplighter Arts, selling her gorgeous creations through Facebook, local consignment shops, the Norman Farmer’s Market and metro area flea markets.

(See Ophelia Lamplighter Arts and BathBombs by Ophelia on FB.)

Her latest venture came about after her husband retired and began making gun slings, created from cords and resembling macrame.

“I was looking for new things to do, so I started helping him,” she said. “Then I got the idea to start doing bracelets with charms, and it grew from there. Now I do all sorts of things; it’s very relaxing for me.”

Originally from Illinois, after joining the Navy Tammie ended up overseas, where she was assigned first to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command and later to the Naval Air Station Agana, both in Guam. Later she would transfer to Naval Air Station Point Mugu, near Oxnard, California.

Initially, Tammie was unrated for her first two years and spent her time working in Guam’s jungles, clearing roads and beaches.

“Being a member of the American Legion lets me meet people and hear their stories and I am honored to be able to try and help them.”

the Navy, she accompanied him to several postings, the last of which was Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. They never anticipated that the state would become their permanent home after his retirement.

“We honestly had no idea what Oklahoma was going to be like,” she said. “But we love the place, and the people here are wonderful—so friendly, helpful and down to earth.”

It was at that point that the position of mess management specialist first opened to female service members, and she was quick to take advantage.

“Once I was finally rated as an MS, I worked in the barracks and galleys, and I fed many sailors, marines, military members and VIPs,” she said.

“During this time, I always put my best foot forward and always made the best of each day and hour I served. I loved the people I served with, and I am still in contact with them today. Technically they’re friends, but really, they are family.”

In all, Tammie spent eight years in the Navy, stationed in Guam and two other locations. During that time, she achieved the rank of MS2, while earning a National Defense Service medal, two Good Conduct medals and an Overseas Service ribbon.

It was also in Guam that she met her husband of 31 years, aviation structural mechanic Ty Richard. The two married and served together. Once Tammie left

Originally a single mom to her daughter, Amanda, Tammie and Ty together have two additional children: son T.J. (who served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist’s mate 1st class) and daughter Victoria. They spend a lot of time with their family, including grandchildren Aria and Gabriel, who, Tammie said, “love spending time doing beads with Nana!”

She and Ty also are talented dancers—even winning KOMA radio station’s ’80s dance contest at Riverwind Casino. They regularly indulge their musical side together, with Tammie playing piano and Ty the trumpet.

Much of her time and energy, however, remains dedicated to her fellow veterans through her volunteer work as a VSO.

“Our post has been able to obtain more than $14 million in deserved benefits to the veterans we’ve helped over the past three years,” she said.

“Being a member of the American Legion lets me meet people and hear their stories and I am honored to be able to try and help them.”

Meet Our Five Women of Influence

Representing Medicine, Libraries, Nonprofits and Business

What do a urogynecologist, ophthalmologist, library branch director, nonprofit CEO, and owner of an upscale furniture company have in common? Each of these outstanding women represents the creme de la creme of their professions, are passionate about their work, and are active in the community and professionally.

DR. ARIELLE ALLEN, D.O.

FOUNDER AND SOLE OWNER, UROGYNECOLOGY OF OKLAHOMA

Career Highlights: After completing her residency and fellowship, both with the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Allen became the first private practice fellowship-trained board-certified urogynecologist in the state of Oklahoma.

She is the founder and sole owner of Urogynecology of Oklahoma (OklahomaUrogynecology.com), the only free-standing private practice urogynecology clinic solely devoted to women's pelvic floor health in the state of Oklahoma.

In this role, she has made it her mission to educate Oklahomans on the impact a healthy pelvic floor can have on a woman's health. Noting that the specialty of urogynecology is not well known as compared to other medical specialties, she strives to help women understand the urinary and gynecologic changes associated with pregnancy, delivery and aging, and she provides specialized treatment plans for female pelvic-related problems for each of her patients.

Community/Professional Involvement:

• Oklahoma County Medical Society executive board

• Lakeside Women’s Hospital executive board

Favorite Award: “Being the selected role model for my niece.  When she graduated high school, she was asked to give a speech about an individual whom she looks up to the most, and she selected me.  That meant the world to me, and I will never not become teary-eyed whenever I think about it.”

Favorite quote: “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

– from Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”

(Dr. Allen notes: “This poem speaks to me in that stepping outside of convention can provide unique and rewarding experiences.  But it is often very difficult and scary to take that/those step(s)!”)

She supervises three regional coordinators, the three Norman branches, and serves as the branch manager of Norman Public Library Central.

Caroline led staff in the largest branch of the system in moving to a new facility, through the pandemic and during the recent closure. After the closing this winter, Caroline immediately began planning and putting into place the opening of an entirely new library concept: Library Lap, a Pop-Up Community Space. This temporary location is meeting the needs of library customers through popular collections, the latest in library technology—MovieBoxes and book lockers to pick up holds— and a full-service Maker Lab, complete with a 3D printer, embroidery machine, and more.

Community Involvement:

• Leadership Norman, 2017

• Norman Forward Committee, and both building projects for the Norman Public Library East and Norman Public Library Central

During her time as CEO, Melissa has led efforts to serve more families, including opening a second Boys & Girls Club location, leveraging government funding to add service providers, renovating CCFI’s facility to accommodate more staff, and forming new partnerships to grow their Baby Pantry distribution from 44,452 diapers in 2021 to 124,796 in 2023.

She loves sharing CCFI’s mission with community groups and connecting with individuals on agency tours. “For 55 years, we have served the Norman community, and we are looking forward to the next 55 years and beyond,” she said.

KATELYNN HENRY

OWNER, HENRY HOME INTERIORS

Career highlights: Six years ago, at a professional crossroads, Katelynn seized the opportunity to infuse new life into the Oklahoma City metro community with the launch of Henry Home Interiors ( HenryInteriors.com).

Drawing from her extensive experience and a familial connection to the furniture industry (her father ran a furniture store for nearly five decades), she embarked on a journey to redefine home decor with a fashion-forward flair.

After three years, they were bursting at the seams, so with her team, she embarked on a journey to expand their 6,000-square-foot showroom to 10,000 square feet, adding a design center and more space to showcase beautiful pieces of furniture that Katelynn views as more akin to works of art. She says celebrating five years this past November was a huge milestone as a small business and that she’s “on the edge of my seat to see what new heights we reach next!”

DR. KIMBERLY WISE, M.D.

Career highlights: After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Dr. Wise did her ophthalmology residency at the Dean McGee Eye Institute.

In 1997, she joined the practice of ophthalmologists Don Brashear and Jackson Woodward, established in 1976. Drs. Wise and Woodward practiced together for eight years. With her husband, Dr. Wise built the offices in which Wise Eye Associates ( WiseEyeAssociates.com) now operate 18 years ago; Woodwood retired about two years later.

Wise is proud of the team she has gathered over the years—and of the physicians who work for her. Of the latter, she said, “They are knowledgeable, conscientious team players. We try to offer the highest level of medical care without losing what makes the doctor-patient relationship special.”

Community Involvement:

Dr. Wise and her associates provide eye care for OU student-athletes. They also are available to take eye-related emergency calls through the Norman Regional Hospital system, and she and her partner, Dr. Meghan Saumur, also participate in NRH’s Emergency Residency program, teaching residents how to care for eyes and eye injuries.

“We serve the community by living here, working here, being accessible to our patients, and being available for emergency call to Norman Regional Hospital, and to OU students and student-athletes,” she said.

Awards:  Dr. Wise said that while awards granted by professional and medical associations and organizations are nice, the recognition that she most cherishes involves her daughters. “I’m most proud of my daughters. That’s an award,” she said. “They are intelligent, interesting, lovely people and I am honored to be their mother.”
