GRACELYN SKAGGS

WESTMOORE HIGH SHOOL

Recent sports or academic highlight?

I have received the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year honors for our varsity team the past two years.

Personal highlights?

My parents’ names are Matt and Elizabeth Skaggs. I have an older sister, Claira, who plays third base for the University of Tulsa softball team, and a younger brother, Canon. I only play volleyball now, but I used to play softball competitively. My entire family has always been into softball and baseball, but I really wanted to try something different. A friend introduced me to volleyball in sixth grade and I’ve loved it ever since.

How do you maintain balance?

I spend most of my time practicing/playing volleyball. This summer has consisted of practice and workouts multiple days a week. My team and I want nothing more than to go to state this season. School is also very important to me. As long as I communicate to my teachers about what days I’ll be missing for volleyball, it isn’t too hard to keep up.

Plans for the future?

I haven’t decided where I’m going to college yet, but I do know that I would like to continue volleyball. I have shown an interest in teaching recently and I think that would be a really cool thing to do when I’m older.

ZANE ZIELNY

WESTMOORE HIGH SHOOL

Recent sports or academic highlight?

Scoring the first touchdown in one of our biggest rivalries against Southmoore last year.

Personal highlights?

My name is Zane Zielny, my father’s name is Kendal Zielny, and my mother’s name is Natalie Zielny. I play football, basketball, and track and field. Outside of sports, I like to spend time with family and friends.

How do you maintain balance?

I just work really hard to make sure I keep a calendar so I know when everything is, and that helps.

Plans for the future?

I don’t know which college I want to attend yet, but I would like to further my football career and earn a degree in business.

Welcome to our annual Kids & Pets issue!

Who doesn't love to read about and see cute photos of kids and pets?!

One of my favorite pieces in this issue comprises photos of some of our advertisers' pets. I was impressed with the volume of photos we received. Maybe I shouldn't have been, though. Americans (and people the world over) do LOVE their pets!

On the kids side of the equation:

While still a student at Arizona State University, Amy Hutchens developed a clinical interest in childhood obesity, children’s health behaviors and physical activity. Now an assistant professor in the Fran and Earl Zieger College of Nursing at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, she continues to develop and conduct research on this topic that is so important, especially here in Oklahoma. Make sure to read about her research and her work at OU inside.'

Do you have a child, grandchild or other relative that has been tested to be on the autism spectrum? If so, you'll want to read Holland Pediatric Therapy founder Diane Holland's recommendations on how to help better prepare a child with autism for returning to school.

Lots more inside, including a piece I wrote on my recent Branson, Missouri, vacation.

Before closing, I wanted to share a recipe for Blueberry Bliss Frozen Dog Pops (we didn't have room to include it with the story, which appears on p. 40), offered by Kat Forry, A1 Pet Emporium director of store operations, who notes that they are nutritious as well as a quick, easy way to keep your dog cool during the dog days of summer. The pops are ideal for dogs with digestive issues or to help soothe occasional stomach distress.

Blueberry Bliss Frozen Dog Pops

Ingredients:

• 2 cups raw goat’s milk

• ½ cup of your choice of mix-ins, including chopped blueberries, chopped bananas or chopped apples.

• All-natural dog treat, such as a Bully Stick

Directions: Combine goat’s milk and fruit in mixing bowl. Pour mixture into ice cube trays, small paper cup or popsicle molds. Insert the all-natural dog treat upright in the tray, cup or mold, like a popsicle stick. Dog-safe peanut butter can be added if desired, as well as kale, pumpkin puree or plain yogurt for added nutritional value. Freeze overnight.

HEALTHY SMILES for life.

Did you know gum disease doesn’t just affect adults but can also be found in kids and teenagers?

Gingivitis typically presents as gum tenderness, redness, puffiness, and/ or bleeding. Before the latest research emerged, it was understood that gingivitis was completely reversible but now we understand that inflammatory markers persist in the gum tissue even after resolution of symptoms. Treating early and providing our young patients with the proper tools and instruction to prevent or halt the progression of gum disease is critically important.

Summertime is a great time to get your children in for a thorough dental exam and cleaning. With the loss of a structured schedule and often more frequent snacking, preventative care and routine dental visits play a vital role in maintaining a healthy mouth and gums.

We understand the importance of oral health during every stage of life and partner with our patients to achieve optimal oral health. We would love the opportunity to help you!

Little Steps, Big Results

Inspiration comes from many sources, in many ways. You have to be open to the message, then act upon it. Picture yourself in the bleachers at a track and field meet and you will learn what drives Olivia Lueking, a Sooner pole vaulter from Clear Lake, Texas.

Olivia began gymnastics when she was 4. After 10 years, she was ready to try something new. She started running cross country to stay in shape. When the coach suggested she try track and field, she liked the idea but had no idea where to start. Enter Mom, who suggested she try pole vault—and the rest has been history making.

“A lot of pole vaulters are former gymnasts. There are similarities but I didn’t know that when my mother made the suggestion. Honestly, I had to think about it,” Olivia said.

“The biggest thing is that both sports

require the ability to be air aware, to know how to move your body. I did not like pole vault at first—it involved too many things.

“You have to sprint down the runway (she’s on a 100-foot one now). You have to build up your speed while you are carrying a pole, or in my case at first dragging it. You have to perfect the timing for the moment you plant the pole in the box, then you fly into the air toward the bar. You rotate as you clear the bar, then you fall backwards into the pit. Each of those things is a small part of what has to come together for the jump to be good. You know it is a good jump as you let go of the pole and make your descent facing away from it.

“Your upper body strength works with your core. You have to be able to power yourself down the runway and you have to keep everything moving in unison. It really helps to have

ATHLETE LIFE | SPORTS + RECREATION
22

older teammates there to reassure you. And it helps that the big pit is waiting.”

Remember being open to the message. Look at the results, and you realize Olivia has mastered that.

Olivia won the indoor and outdoor Big 12 titles as a freshman and added the 2023 outdoor crown. She owns the indoor (14-7.5) and outdoor school records (14-9). She has won 17 individual titles in two years. She was named 2022 USTFCCCA Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year and has earned AllAmerica honors three times to date. She was the unanimous choice as the 2022 Big 12 Female Freshman Athlete of the Year.

“It is important to succeed in the little steps,” Olivia says. “I appreciate the little steps. I didn’t come to OU to win titles or honors. For me, it’s about being a better vaulter. It’s about clearing one height at a time because each successful vault leads to the next height and that will lead to a big result for me.”

Her most recent competition was the qualifier for the NCAA Championship. There were 12 vaulters, including two Sooners, tied for the final three qualifying spots. That led to a jump off, Olivia’s first, and she earned a qualifying spot. Olivia’s OU teammate did not. The difference between first and 12th was less than 4 inches.

“It was weird. We were cheering for each other. I had to look at it as clearing the height to get to the next bar.”

“I have to thank God for gifting me with this talent. Our coaches are amazing. It is a selfless job for Coach Jerel Langley, my event coach, Head Coach Tim Langford and the rest of the staff. I am blessed to be at OU, where we are provided all the opportunities to succeed. They invest everything they can in each of us. It does take a village.”

Especially when you are creating inspiration for life.

Pets, be they dogs, cats or other (including goats!), provide us with unconditional love, can help alleviate stress and lower blood pressure, and provide companionship. They also entertain us (think of all the pet-related YouTube videos!).  For this, our Kids & Pets issue, we asked our advertisers to share photos of their pets,

many happily responded.

Selah’s Most Recent Focus: Children

PLAY AREA THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT IN UNIQUE COMMUNITY LOCATED

JUST SOUTH OF NORMAN

You’ve probably already heard about Selah (SelahOK.com)—an up-and-coming wellness community located just 10 minutes south of downtown Norman. Perhaps you even know someone who has purchased a home in this walkable, New Urban Community boasting 540 acres of front porch living, fresh food, and a focus on reconnecting family and community through nature.

Selah openly welcomes visits from their neighbors to the north (as well as others) who may be seeking possible places to relocate or are simply curious about what this unique community has to offer. It’s also just a really nice place to visit. Selah’s most recent focus has been on children. This summer, they finished constructing Pryor’s Play Area , located near the pickleball courts and Pryor’s Pizza Kitchen.

PRYOR’S PLAY AREA.

“We want to be as family-friendly as possible. We have plenty of draws for adults, but we didn’t want to forget the kids!” remarked Selah creative director Ali Parker. “With so many different activities to enjoy, Pryor’s Play Area is perfect for children ages 3 to 10.”

Selah also is a pet-friendly establishment. At the time of this writing, a watering area for pets, located by brand-new outdoor restrooms, was under construction.

“With Selah still in the initial phase of development, there is an ever-growing list of activities and attractions to continually spark new interest,” Ali says.

“You can even plan a full day here! Start your morning off with some coffee at the insanely Instagramable  Sip at Selah , then jump in a Bronco with one of our in-house Realtors for a tour of what’s here and what is to come. Enjoy spending time with family by taking a hike up to see our friendly Watusi, Alpacas and horses.

“Then,” she said, “enjoy gourmet coal-fired pizza inside at Pryor’s for dinner. Afterwards, make your way outside for some pickleball, ping pong or cornhole, and then make sure to stop by the Silo, grab a drink and enjoy some live music at one of our fire pit sitting areas available for reservation.”

Here are some details to help you plan your visit.

PRYOR’S PIZZA KITCHEN

Pryor’s Pizza Kitchen, 18935 Selah Way (readers may remember when it was located in downtown Norman), brings a unique and exciting experience for the entire family. Located at the entrance of Selah, it offers handmade pizza cooked in a one-of-a-kind coal-fired oven and unique handcrafted cocktails. Just outside, look for the aforementioned playground for the younger guests and activities for the whole family.

Many weekends, you can catch live music as well on the stage at Pryor’s. Coming up, look for Hunter Thomas from 8-11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5; Kyle Killgore, 8-11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11; Alex Pierce, 8-10:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12; and Jessica Herring, 8-10:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19.

SIP AT SELAH

The bright, sleek Art Deco aesthetic of Sip at Selah attracts conversationalists, gal pals and caffeine aficionados alike. Early risers will enjoy freshly brewed cups from local roaster, Eôté Coffee Company, as well as high-end teas from Tea Forte. Brunch and lunch are served Thursday through Sunday; small bites throughout the week.

“We have seen a consistent influx of returning guests, both for the wonderful pizza and the constantly growing collection of amenities,” Ali noted.

Ali also had news for any of our readers planning a special event in the near future. A decadent throwback to the Prohibition era, The Reserve at Selah echoes back to the Roaring ‘20s and is the perfect venue for wedding receptions, corporate events and formal get-togethers. This uniquely singular space will soon feature a members-only lounge and supper club. The Supper Club is open to anyone who purchases a dinner ticket.

“With Selah still in the initial phase of development, there is an ever-growing list of activities and attractions to continually spark new interest.”
Now, kids and pets can find accommodations at Selah!

‘It’s Not Just a Fair, It’s a Tradition’ Theme of 2023 Cleveland County Fair
32
The Apache Blackfoot Society will present “Indian Ceremony Under the Tent” from 1- 4 p.m. on Sunday, the last day of the four-day fair.

PRESERVING HERITAGE AT THE COUNTY FAIR

Preserving heritage is one component of the annual Cleveland County Fair—the largest county fair in the state. While the fair has evolved over time to include the latest in carnival rides and exhibits entries to keep up with modern technology, tradition is still an important element of the fair.

The 2023 Cleveland County Fair theme, “It’s not just a fair, it’s a tradition,” is more than a nod to the past. From the Apache Blackfoot Society’s prayer ceremony to the Canadian River Old Iron Club’s tractor pull and children’s activities as well as livestock shows, canning, quilting, baking and more, cultural heritage is a core component of the county fair every year.

Now in its second year at the Cleveland County Fair, the Apache Blackfoot Society, “Indian Ceremony Under the Tent” will run from 1- 4 p.m. on Sunday, the last day of the four-day fair.

“It’s not a pow wow,” said Headsman Treymane Wells. “These are culture songs. They are prayer songs.”

People are free to quietly come and go as the society performs a variety of sacred ceremonies.

“We are Apache. We still have ceremonies, and we are still here,” Treymane said.

“Everyone is welcome to come and watch. We ask that there are no pictures and no video or audio recordings.”

Treymane is joined by other headsmen: Philip Wetselline, Sam Redbone and Herbie Pebeashy. The headsmen oversee the ceremonies.

“We’ve been doing this for years. These have been handed down. This is the 52nd year for us but I don’t how long it’s been going on,” Treymane said. “It’s a blessing for us to get out and for the world to see us.”

Farm tradition is prevalent on many levels at the county fair. The Canadian River Old Iron Club, popularly known as CROIC, hosts tractor pulls and children’s activities on the north side of the fairgrounds campus. Families can take a step back in time with CROIC’s hand’s on, kidfriendly activities that including a hayride, trackless train, corn grinder and sheller, and washtub.

“The kids’ activities go back to the rub-board washing tub and a hand pump. This is how the water comes out of the ground; you didn’t have a faucet,” explained Fair Board and Tractor Club member Jerry Calvert. “This lets kids experience life before video games and cell phones.”

All of the children’s and tractor pull activities are free.

“The tractor pull is a competition among the tractors from 1959 and earlier, so it’s antique and vintage

tractors,” Calvert said. “The tractor pull is a fair tradition.”

Antique tractors are also on display throughout the entire fair.

“We offer things at the Cleveland County Fair that not every fair offers,” Jerry said. “We have people come from across the state to participate in the state kiddie tractor pull and we also have the county kiddie tractor pull for kids in Cleveland County.”

CROIC activities aren’t the only interactive way families can connect with tradition at the Cleveland County Fair.

The Silver Spur Square Dancing demonstration illustrates variety of classic folk dances. Popular in the 1800s, square dancing has seen a revival—and the Silver Spur group keeps it alive in Cleveland County by sharing their dances at the county fair each year, starting with a demonstration and then inviting the audience to join in on the fun. Costumes vary from simple to elaborate but keep the spirit of the tradition alive.

“We love to share the fun and excitement of square dancing with the crowd at the Cleveland County Free Fair,” said Silver Spur Secretary Melissa Thomas. “We hope to see everyone there.”

The 4-H Cloggers also demonstrate a popular and physically demanding folk dance.

Tradition is also preserved at the county fair through exhibits showing quilts, canning, baked goods, crafts and agricultural products. Quilts have become an artform, and while the beauty of the past is maintained, many quilts today are machine quilted, a nod to both tradition and current technology. Categories of the competitions allow for these differences recognizing hand and machine quilted, pieced and appliqued, tacked or tied.

Traditional canning has made a come-back with backyard gardening on the rise, and many people these days are enjoying having control of their food supply. The fair is a great place to see beautifully canned foods and connect with people who enjoy canning and food preservation.

From crafts and baking to fine arts and livestock shows, the fair has a lot to offer beyond the midway. This year’s fair will be Sept. 7-10 at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds, 615 E. Robinson St., Norman. Parking and admission are free.

Two judges look over canned goods during last year's fair.

Chasing a Remedy for Childhood Obesity

Nurse & Marathon Runner Amy Hutchens Researching Parenting Practices and How They Influence Children’s Health Behaviors

It’s well established that obesity is at epidemic levels in the United States— Oklahoma, in particular. Among those on the front lines battling this crisis is Amy Hutchens*, R.N., Ph.D., who is adding to the knowledge base that will encourage and provide additional tools for parents to keep their children active.

Amy currently is an assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma’s Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing, which is where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

While still a student, she developed a clinical interest in childhood obesity, children’s health behaviors and physical activity, and she continues to develop and conduct research on the topic. Along the way, she completed her Ph.D. in nursing and health care innovation from Arizona State University, where she was named as its Outstanding Graduate.

“I focus on physical activity because I love to exercise, and I’ve even run the New York

City marathon and 12 half-marathons here in Oklahoma,” Amy said.

“I became interested in obesity because of the obesity epidemic.”

She noted that childhood obesity impacts nearly 20% of children and adolescents in the United States and is a serious health problem.

“My research focuses on parenting practices and how they influence children’s health behaviors. The majority of parents who exercise will have children who exercise. I am working on the development of interventions aimed at supporting and improving parents’ health behaviors, which will hopefully impact their children’s health behaviors and future generations.”

Amy noted that family provides the social context where our behavior patterns develop, and that a parent’s beliefs and actions about physical activity and nutrition directly predict their child’s patterns and risk for obesity. Low

socioeconomic-status children are disproportionally impacted by overweight and obesity, she added, saying that “effective family-based prevention programs, like those I am trying to develop, must combine information on the link between parenting, children’s physical activity and eating behaviors.”

Originally from Purcell, Amy said that she loves to learn and became interested in teaching while in college herself. After teaching licensed practical nurses (LPNs) at a technical college for several years, in 2010 she joined the OU College of Nursing faculty, where she’s been ever since. She teaches nursing pharmacology classes, as well as two back-to-back courses on the human experience of acute and chronic illness.

“I love the students, my colleagues and the opportunity to learn more and create new science,” she said. “Working with college students is fun. They are smart, entertaining, high energy, and I love that they

are learning how to save a life. That is a critical skill. This generation is open minded and innovative. They are always thinking of new and creative ways to do things, and they inspire me to think differently.”

Amy’s influence on her students is strong and positive, and she consistently receives rave reviews from them. In 2019 she was chosen by her colleagues to receive the college’s Excellence in Academic Teaching Award. Her knowledge of nursing education also was recognized at the highest level when the National Council of State Boards of Nursing asked her to contribute questions for their official national council licensure exam for registered nurses.

She also has earned numerous academic and professional honors to date, including being named a national March of Dimes Oklahoma Nurse of the Year finalist in 2015. Her research has been published and presented in multiple outlets, including The Journal of School Nursing and at annual meetings for the Society of Behavioral Medicine and the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science.

In addition to her professorial duties with OU, Amy serves on the Oklahoma Nurses Association board and is in the midst of her third term as its membership development director. (ONA is the professional association for all Oklahoma registered nurses.) In her role she travels around the state and works with ONA

members to address professional issues like nurse-force ratios, patient safety, workplace safety and scope of practice.

“Our vision is to improve the health of Oklahomans through advancing professional nursing practice,” Amy said.

“There is still a shortage of nurses at the bedside, and this impacts safety and health outcomes for everyone. I can impact this in a positive way by continuing to train nurses and advocating for safe conditions at the bedside. Achieving this goal through my role as an ONA board member is very rewarding, because I feel like I can make a difference for the profession of nursing by advocating for a culture of safety and eliminating barriers to practice.”

With all that she has on her plate, Amy said her family provides “the best support system a person could ask for!” The family includes her children, Ian and Raegan Hutchens, parents Tommie and Judy McPherson (who are longtime central Oklahoma farmers), her significant other, Brandon Philbin, and the family’s Maine Coon cat, Sirius Black.

“I believe the key to happiness is meaningful relationships,” Amy said. “I am very grateful to have so much support and love.”

*Editor’s Note - As per OU requirements, Amy Hutchens notes that her opinions and conclusions are her own; they do not necessarily represent the university.

“I focus on physical activity because I love to exercise, and I’ve even run the New York City marathon and 12 half-marathons here in Oklahoma.”

Device Allows Man to Walk Again

Help Sought to Purchase Vital Equipment

(Editor’s Note: This is the second piece in a series of five highlighting the chosen areas of focus for the Norman Regional Health Foundation’s Equipped for Tomorrow capital campaign.)

Caleb Freeman was driving to a University of Oklahoma basketball game on Dec. 17, 2017, when his life would change in an instant.

Caleb’s car hydroplaned into oncoming traffic and was crushed by a 75,000-pound semi-truck. First responders estimated he had a 10% chance of coming out of the wreck alive, and his chances for walking and mobility independence appeared slim to none.

But Caleb is able to walk today, thanks to his fighting spirit and special equipment aimed at assisting recovery. Now the Norman Regional Health Foundation is hoping to bring that same equipment to Norman so others can regain abilities once thought lost.

Caleb spent many long months of hospitalization and rehab. He was sent out-of-state for the last step of his physical rehabilitation. Caleb’s family and health team chose Nebraska, because it was the nearest facility that was home to the technology and tool that would assist him in his goal to walk again.

Caleb had the opportunity to utilize a robotic body-weight support system, known as the ZeroG Gait and Balance System, which empowers those injured and left with neurological deficiencies to relearn how to walk again.

“That was one of my favorite machines I’ve used because it gives you such a freedom. You have something hanging you up but at the same time, you don’t necessarily feel like you are co-dependent on something else. Like, you just feel like you are walking and running,” Caleb shared.

Through physical rehabilitation, Norman Regional Health System enhances quality of life through strength and mobility for patients who have experienced stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, amputees and orthopedic injury.

“Norman Regional Health System wants this independent living skills and rehabilitation tool, the ZeroG Gait and Balance System, available to those we serve in Norman and surrounding areas. It is important for the patient to recover near home and be surrounded by loved ones during rehabilitation which can extend for months at a time,” stated Ben Vandaveer, PT, NCS, MRMC, NRHS Inpatient Rehabilitation Program manager.

• NRHS’s Physical Rehabilitation department treats more than 500 people per year, of which 30% are stroke and spinal cord injuries.

• ZeroG allows patients to return to their lives quicker. More than 85% of patients will not need to stay at an intermediate care facility before returning home.

• ZeroG empowers patients by reducing the need for ongoing mechanical aids such as scooters and walkers, and by returning to independence with confidence.

• This system allows the clinician to work using a reduced gravity-like environment, eliminating the need for two therapists, allowing more freedom to move without the fear of having to possibly catch the patient if they fall.

The ZeroG Gait and Balance System is one critical piece of equipment in the Norman Regional Health Foundation's $4 million capital campaign, Equipped for Tomorrow! The campaign aims to transform medical technology and treatment services across four vital health care domains: Cardiovascular Care, Cancer Care, Perinatal Care and Physical Rehabilitation. In addition, a fifth project will breathe new life into the Education Center on the Porter campus.

With your help, the Norman Regional Foundation can bring an advanced training system right here to Norman and the surrounding communities. Visit: nrhfound ation.org/equipped_for_tomorrow to donate.

Our BRANSON, MISSOURI Summer Vacay

This summer, my sister Lori and niece, City Lifestyle columnist/photographer Lindsey Davies, considered several ideas for our summer vacation. One of our key considerations was finding a place not too far away by car that would also hopefully be both entertaining and educational for Lindsey’s 6-year-old son, Liam. We also planned on bringing Lori and Lindsey’s aging fur babies with us.

Eventually, we decided against Corpus Christi, Texas, or Colorado (at least for this year) and turned our sights on Branson, Missouri, a favorite vacation destination of my family many years back.

Our first step was to plan our route and book pet-friendly hotels. La Quinta By Wyndam allows pets for a small fee, and as a bonus offers free breakfast, so we booked our first night at the La Quinta in Joplin, Missouri, and the rest of the nights at the sister hotel in Branson. After leaving Joplin, we made a quick stop in Springfield to visit the giant Big Bass Shops there, which (happily) allows dogs.

We visited Silver Dollar City (SilverDollarCity.com), a popular 1880s theme park, on a Wednesday. If you have a choice, I recommend visiting between Monday and Thursday, as weekends get extremely busy, with long lines for all the attractions. (No pets allowed; we left ours at the hotel.)

Liam rode only one ride, Lucky’s Dizzy Dogs, in the kiddie area (called Fireman’s Landing), but there are several available for

Silver Dollar City, Caves, Lakefront Beaches, and So Much More!

more adventurous children. Liam loved the FireHouse Play Place, a two-story interactive training course is a bucketful of fun for new recruits, filled with foam balls, hoses and cannons for mock firefighting practice.

I wanted to ride the Fire in the Hole roller coaster, billed as “the world’s most historic indoor roller coaster,” which will be retired at the end of the 2023 season, but didn’t get the chance. Likewise, I’d hoped to visit Marvel Cave, around which the theme park was originally built, but we decided the hourlong, 300foot descent was a bit too strenuous for the 6-year-old at this stage.

Liam also greatly enjoyed the Frisco Silver Dollar Line Steam Train ride, in which “train robbers” briefly interrupt the ride in a humorous (to a kid, anyway) stick-up attempt. We rode on it twice.

A swinging bridge; Grandfather’s Mansion, featuring mystifying rooms with slanting floors, mirrored walls and dizzying effects; and a glassblowing demonstration nicely rounded out our visit, which we actually enjoyed in two separate visits. Park guests are allowed to come and go as they wish during the day they visit; just remember to hold onto your tickets!

Summer hours for the theme park (and water park) end Aug. 27. Visit their website for special fall hours.

Branson’s offerings have grown so much since my last visit! It would take much more than a week to sample on the shows and attractions you’ll find there, most if not all of them family-friendly.

We bought tickets to the Aquarium at the Boardwalk ( AquariumattheBoardwalk.com), which were pretty pricey at over $200 for four tickets, but they turned out to be a bargain, as your purchase also allows you access (within the next two days) to the Hollywood Wax Museum, the Castle of Chaos, Hanna’s Maze of Mirrors and Shoot for the Stars Mini-Golf. We visited them all, some twice!

We also visited Talking Rocks Caverns ( Talking RocksCavern.com), which is smaller than Marvel Cave but quite beautiful. We only made it through part of the tour before Liam decided it was all a bit too much, but I’m glad we got to see as much as we did. Definitely worth your time! Our last full day in Branson, we visited nearby Table Rock Lake ( VisitTableRockLake. com) for an afternoon of swimming. Table Rock came in at the top spot in Travellersworldwide.com’s listing of the 14 Best Lakes in the U.S. in 2023.

I’d definitely recommend Branson for a family-friendly vacation, pets or no. We plan a return visit when Liam is old enough to enjoy more of the rides.

TOP: In addition to touring Talking Rocks Cavern, visitors can enjoy gemstone mining or sluicing, Speleo Boxes, nature trails and family games. (Photo by Lindsey Davies) MIDDLE: Branson’s Castle of Chaos and Hannah’s Maze of Mirrors

Back to School

How to More Smoothly Transition Your Child With Autism

Transitioning from home to school can be challenging for all children, but especially for children with autism. There are several things parents can do to make the transition easier for everyone.

// Step One

Arrange a visit to the school. Tour all the areas with your child where he will participate. Visit the classroom and let him sit at his desk; visit and allow him to use the restroom that his class will use. If your child will eat lunch in the cafeteria, tour that area. Take a trip to the playground and allow some time to play on the equipment. Take mental inventory of the possible sensory

challenges in each of the areas where your child will be (e.g., Does the toilet in the restroom flush too loud and cause a sensory reaction from your child?).

// Step Two

Talk positively about the school experience while on the tour and for the weeks prior to starting school.

// Step Three

Create a social story using pictures that you took on the tour. Write a simple narrative that describes the new routine of the school day. Read and review the story together often before the first day of school.

HOW TO | EDUCATION
48

// Step Four

Create a visual schedule using your photos so the new routine has predictability from day one.

// Step Five

Discuss any of the sensory issues that you identified during the tour with your child’s teacher and other staff. Give your child noise-cancelling headphones, if needed. Plan carefully his wardrobe (this is not the day to wear the new, unwashed, shirt with tags).

// Step Six

Collaborate with teachers; let them know your child’s strengths, specific sensory issues, and any concerns you may have.

// Step Seven

Make sure your child’s IEP is up-to-date and includes services and accommodations that best fit his current needs. Sometimes the IEP that was reviewed in the spring is no longer appropriate for the child’s needs in the fall.

// Step Eight

Relax. Your child (and you) will adjust to this new routine! Give it time.

MOORE ANIMAL SHELTER VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers like Marina Wells play a vital role for the City of Moore’s Animal Welfare Department, and support the department’s mission to protect pets. Volunteers walk animals, clean enclosures, work at adoption events and provide crucial socialization experience for the animals in the city’s care.

“I find volunteering with animals to be very calming,” Marina explains. “There is something very peaceful about working with animals and giving affection. It’s cathartic, almost like a serotonin boost, and socializing the animals also increases their chance of adoption.”

Marina and her daughter both volunteer at the shelter, which allows Marina to share the importance of giving back to the community with her family.

In addition, the Moore Animal Welfare is always accepting donations of towels, blankets, cat litter, per food, dish soap, fabric softener and laundry detergent, pet toys, treats, cleaning supplies, and pet beds.
