NORMAN NORTH HIGH SCHOOL
Recent sports or academic highlight?
Among my many memories of playing soccer at Norman North, two experiences stand out. In my junior year, I had a great time in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where we competed in a tournament, went to the beach, and played spikeball. Then, because of the team chemistry we built on that trip, as well as all of the preparation we put in during the season, we won the state championship. Lifting the trophy as a team gave us all an amazing feeling of accomplishment that I will never forget.
Personal highlights?
I am the son of Mark and April Whitman, and I have a little brother, Wyatt. I play club soccer at Oklahoma Energy FC, which has helped me improve as a player and given me the opportunity to play against some of the best teams in the region. In school, I am involved in the National Honor Society and Engineering Club. I like to play ping pong, hang out with my friends, and watch soccer.
How do you maintain balance?
For me, it’s important to find a balance between school, soccer and life. I have found that planning ahead, getting good sleep and prioritizing activities are truly important. Plans for the future?
I am planning to attend SMU, where I will major in accounting and data analytics.

Recent sports or academic highlight?
James Bond, MD
Ted Boehm, MD
Brian Clowers, MD
Richard Kirkpatrick, MD
This year, I was an All-Stater and placed eighth at the state meet for the 2022 cross country season. I was also named my team’s MVP and was named to the All-City high school girls’ cross country first team. So far this track season, I have reached a mile and 800 personal record, and I can’t wait for state! I have maintained a high GPA, been involved in National Honors Society and was recently elected Norman North’s student body president.
Personal highlights?
I am the daughter of Jimieanne and Dan Kite and run cross country and track for Norman North! I l am involved in student council, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and leadership and running camps. I enjoy serving with my church and school, hanging out with my friends and family, snow and water skiing, and playing guitar!
How do you maintain balance?
Taking one day at a time is key to maintaining balance. I go to school, go to practice and do whatever evening activity I have -- and then manage to do all my homework either at school or at night. If I let too much stack up, it’s overwhelming and detrimental to success, so knocking stuff out one day at a time and not looking too far ahead is the best way to balance all social and athletics aspects. A good way I do this is by keeping a calendar so I know what I have on my plate and then having the self discipline to make sure I get everything done.
Plans for the future?
I will run my senior year next year, and I plan to continue my running and academic careers at the next level in college. I would love to go down the exercise science path and become a physical therapist -- not decided where, though!

Welcome to Our Ladies Issue!
This issue focuses on some of the outstanding women of our community, women who are leaders in their careers and who give freely of their precious time to help elevate this community. (Never fear: our June issue will be directed at the outstanding men of our community!)
In our Women With Influence story, we shine the spotlight on seven incredibly hard-working and creative women whose careers fall in the fields of law, higher education, health care, business, insurance, fine arts and digital media. Their sphere of influence, however, extends far into our community, through their volunteer work and leadership on various nonprofit boards and counsels.
You'll also read about Kate Wiley, owner of Taloa Oka' Studio (which means singing water in the Chickasaw language), who began her artistic journey as a dancer before turning to the paintbrush. She loves to incorporate beautiful flowing movement that makes viewers sway as they follow the momentum of the piece. Throughout her work, she strives to create feelings of joy and freedom. Look for yourself and judge if she's successful; I think she is! (See related photo, above.)
I won't spend more time here elaborating on the stories inside this issue; I'd rather readers spend their time perusing the actual articles themselves. May you find inspiration and joy as you go through the magazine.
One final request for our readers before closing: Please take some time to identify one or more women in our community who are deserving of thanks, and let them know how much they are appreciated. It may be an elementary school teacher who has helped your child through a difficult time, a doctor who treats you as an individual and not a disease, a neighbor or friend who's constantly involved in civic or community projects...anyone, in short, who is making a difference in our neighborhood, our city, our lives.

Not Your Usual Rentals, These Sport Fun Themes
ARTICLE BY JERRI CULPEPPER
If you ever book an Airbnb in the Oklahoma City metro area through superhost Allison Christian, you or your guests will get more than just a comfortable, well-appointed place to stay. You can select from several themes, including The Modern Jungle Room, That 70’s House, and Rodeo in the Paseo—with more in the works.
By day an attorney and federal prosecutor, Allison Christian, 27, enjoys spending her “spare” time investing in real estate and growing her real estate business. Eager to take on new clients, she’s preparing to take the real estate broker licensing exam so she can expand her property management and brokerage services.
Currently, her real estate endeavors include long-term rentals, mid- and short-term rentals, remodels, themed rental design, and general interior design.
“The design aspect is definitely my favorite,” Allison says. “Long-term rentals are typically rental properties with a lease term of 12 months.
Mid-term rentals are usually furnished rentals renting from one to six months. Short-term rentals are nightly rentals that are often listed on the Airbnb or Vrbo platforms.”
Noticing that the short-term rental market was becoming increasingly saturated, she began thinking of ways to set her properties apart. After researching themed rentals across the United States, she decided to “take the plunge.”
“It’s been fun picking out furniture and decorations to bring my ideas to life,” she says.
One of her former short-term rentals was library themed, and The Rodeo in the Paseo is her latest venture. Located in the Paseo District, one block from popular bars and restaurants, it will boast a Western glam theme.
Her other rentals are in the Crestwood and Mayfair neighborhoods, with another located near Little Sahara State Park in Waynoka, Oklahoma. Look for all her listings on her Instagram page (@notyouraveragestay).

Fun Facts
Did you know that Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home? It has since grown to over 4 million hosts who have welcomed 1.4 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, Airbnb hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities more authentically.
The VRBO website was created by a retired teacher in 1995 in Aurora, Colorado, with the goal of renting his Breckenridge Ski Resort condo. The website soon became popular with homeowners that wanted to list their properties for short-term rental.

Life.Church’s Sisters Ministry
ARTICLE BY LIFE.CHURCH PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF LIFE.CHURCH
A SPACE FOR WOMEN TO ‘GATHER, GROW AND GO—TOGETHER’
Every year, women across the Oklahoma City metro gather at Life.Church locations to find encouragement, hope and relationships. This ministry for women—led by Life.Church’s co-founding pastor, Amy Groeschel—is called Sisters, and it’s a space for women to “gather, grow and go—together.”
Groeschel says, as a church, “Our desire for Sisters is to build up the women of Life.Church with spiritual truth and love. I pray that they’ll be encouraged, inspired and strengthened through this community of women of all ages and stages.”
For many women, this ministry creates an opportunity for friendships to grow and flourish. That’s exactly what happened for Abigail Workman and Caitlin Remington when they met through the annual Sisters Event in 2018.
“I was new to the area, heard about the event, and was incredibly nervous walking in,” Abigail recalls, “and I was surprised when I walked through the doors to find women of all ages smiling and welcoming me.”
Caitlin remembers a similar experience: “I was really looking forward to the event. I had invited some of the ladies who I served with to join me, and I was so excited when I saw them in the lobby before the event. After the message from Pastor Amy, we were encouraged to spend time connecting with other women in the lobby. This is how Abigail and I met.”
“I remember talking to a few different women before meeting Caitlin,”
MENTAL WELLBEING | LIFE + CULTURE
28
Abigail says. “We had the stereotypical ‘small talk’ for a few minutes, but it quickly turned into a conversation when we realized we had things in common—like being new to the area and attending the same university.”
Without this event, it was unlikely that these two women would have met. While they attended the same Life.Church location, they served in different ministries at different times on the weekend. But because they chose to take advantage of the connection time at Sisters, they were able to start a lasting friendship.
“This friendship that started inside the church continued when we walked out the doors. And it’s because of this event. Sisters creates a place for women to come together and worship, grow and connect with one another,” Caitlin says.
Sisters started in order to create a place for women to find their people, just like Abigail and Caitlin did. When the women who attend find and build strong relationships, they experience the love and community that God desires for them.
While this event happens every fall, the heart of the ministry is lived out through small groups that meet every week. In these groups, women gather for a Bible study, to talk about their lives, or because they share a common interest. The purpose of these groups is for women to find a place to belong and deep, meaningful relationships throughout the year.
Interested in learning more? You can find a women’s small group near you at life.church/lifegroups
You can also stay connected to the ministry by signing up for a monthly email from Pastor Amy. Each month, she shares a short devotional and encouragement, as well as resources she’s loving to grow her faith. You can sign up for this email and learn more about Sisters at life.church/sisters

The Art of Fluid Painting
Kate Wiley, owner of Taloa Oka’ Studio, began her artistic journey as a dancer before turning to the paintbrush. Throughout her childhood, she looked to her father, who took her along to art exhibits and gallery shows, for inspiration.
From a young age, Kate found her creative outlet in dancing, and spent the next 30 years exploring different genres. The concept of movement became an important aspect of her art, but it wasn’t until 2020 that she tackled the canvas.
The idea of fluid artwork piqued Kate’s interest, so when she expressed her intention to craft vivid, flowing creations, her husband came home with bags of paint, encouraging her to jump right in.

3.
With a combination of artistic genes from her father and self-determination, Kate was able to teach herself the art of fluid painting after watching videos and learning through trial and error. After countless hours of adding resin and acrylics to wood panels, her career in painting began to take off.
“It all began to feel like I was one with the process,” she says. “It accepted me, and I accepted it. It was something that I could do well and be proud of. So, I started exhibiting in art shows in 2021. In December, I exhibited in my first solo art show in the Aapisa’ Gallery at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. Then, in January of this year, I began my second solo exhibit at the ARTesian Gallery in Sulphur, Oklahoma. It has been a truly wonderful experience and I’m so grateful to the Chickasaw Nation for giving me these opportunities.”
Within her Native American roots, Kate found a suitable name for her studio—Taloa Oka’—which means singing water in the Chickasaw language. Although her paintings break away from traditional Indigenous art, her culture is showcased within each unique piece she finishes.
“Our people have a long tradition of making art, and dancing has always been a very important cultural aspect to the Chickasaw people as well,” Kate explains. “I chose this name for my studio because I absolutely love rain. The sound of it makes me feel relaxed, peaceful and joyful, and this is how I want people to feel when they experience my art. I’m also going to be working on a series this year of the four elements—wind, water, earth and fire—which are all important aspects of our culture.”
To create a central movement in her artwork, Kate uses her favorite color scheme of purples, pinks and blues against a contrasting black background. She then finishes the vibrant colors with resin to create a glossy sheen that mimics the look of water. When it comes to defining her personal artistic style, Kate found her fluid paintings connected to her history of dance.
“While exhibiting at an art festival in 2021, I had an onlooker describe my paintings as having such beautiful movement, and it hit me that my art was dancing on canvas,” Kate recalls. “I was taking my lifelong love of dance and conveying that with paints.
Since then, I have defined my art as such: ‘Dancing on Canvas.’ I love to incorporate beautiful flowing movement that makes you sway as you follow the momentum of the piece.”
The development of creating such intricate waves of paint comes with the obstacle of Kate’s mediums taking its own sense of control on the canvas. The finished result may often stray from her original intention, as it takes six to eight weeks to be finalized, but Kate finds beauty within the process.
“Doing fluid art has really helped me in my personal growth journey,” she says. “I always say fluid art has a mind of its own. There is much less control over how the piece turns out than painting with brushes. You have somewhat of a short working time to get the design where you want it before the paints start to set up and won’t move anymore. When I begin a piece, I have a

color scheme and basic design in mind. How the piece turns out sometimes is not at all what I had envisioned.
“You have to have an open mind and work with the paint to release a certain amount of control over it and see where it takes you. This has really taught me so much about life. What I paint is an extension of who I am.”
Kate encourages others to jump into their own creative outlets to explore what hidden crafts they might find. Her signature streams of paint and flowing art style are meant to uplift and inspire.
“I hope my art makes people feel joy and freedom,” she says. “I hope it brings light to their day with a celebration of color and movement. I hope they look at the abstract nature of a piece and find something new to see each time they look at it. I also hope that I can be an encouragement to those who have never taken the step to try an artform, to just go for it.
“Experiment and find what you enjoy doing in life,” she adds. “Take the pressure off and just play … see where it takes you. My motto is a very simple idea that took me years to figure out: ‘Be who you want to be.’ I truly hope my art can be a reminder of that.”

Women With Influence
WE SHINE THE SPOTLIGHT ON SOME OF OUR OUTSTANDING WOMEN LEADERS
ARTICLE BY JERRI CULPEPPER
PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT:
I have been able to help so many people by showing them their worth and giving them the confidence to pursue their dreams. Whether it is through my work at Hite Digital Norman, my podcast or my public speaking, I am always looking for ways to inspire and motivate others to embrace their true selves and make a positive impact in the world.
OTHER CURRENT OR PREVIOUS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT (LIMITED TO TOP 1-3): Serves on the board of the Virtue Center; Moore and South OKC Chambers of Commerce
PHILOSOPHY ON GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY:
My philosophy on giving back to the community is simple: leave it better than you found it. This community was built by good citizens who wanted to create a better future. I believe it is my duty, as a member of this community, to carry on that legacy and do my part to improve this community and the lives of those around me.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT:
I believe my proudest achievement would be being able to make it on my own. I have been through a lot of adversities throughout my life and I never allowed that to stop me from exploring the world and following my oh-so-many dreams. I built myself into this amazing young woman that gets to create every day of her life and share a little of her mind with the world.
OTHER CURRENT OR PREVIOUS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT (LIMITED TO TOP 1-3):
Currently discussing options with multiple nonprofits to facilitate paint classes for underserved communities. It’s important for me to advocate for minority groups, too, which I do in part through social media.
PHILOSOPHY ON GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY:
PANDANATION is something that came about when I was on ANTM 21 because I had to figure out a way to show the world my art while on a modeling competition show. I created the PANDAS and my fan base became known as PANDANATION. Growing up half Asian and half white, I wanted all my fans to feel like they had a place where they belonged because I know how it feels to feel like you don’t. So PANDANATION is for my community to have a place where there is no judgment and all characters are welcome. I believe I was given this platform for those who don’t have a voice, to let them know they are not alone, and that they have someone on their side to support them just like they support me.
FAVORITE QUOTES:
“Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance one’s ability to persuade.” - Ruther Bader Ginsburg;

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT:
I feel that being a member of the South OKC Chamber Ambassadors is a huge honor. I consider them the ‘welcoming committee’ for new small businesses that come to South Oklahoma City. I served as co-chair of the ambassadors last year and was named Ambassador of the Month in January 2023. Both of these honors meant a great deal to me because of the amazing people who also serve as ambassadors; these are some of the busiest and most giving people I have ever met.

PHILOSOPHY ON GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY: I
I believe giving back to the community is the most important contribution we can make. I want to help make our community better than it was when we arrived here and better for my children and grandchildren. I think every contribution we make can make a positive difference in someone’s life in some way. I think time is of as much or more importance than monetary contributions and many times a lot harder to get people to give.

Drs. Spurlock and Jenkins
Dr. Sara Spurlock and Dr. Jennifer Jenkins, partners at Norman’s Dental Design Studio ( NormanDentist. com), recently graduated from the prestigious Kois Center. Graduation from this continuing education program requires participants to complete over 200 hours of instruction, demonstration and training, culminating in each candidate’s presentation of a clinical case to their peers.
Spurlock and Jenkins are only the second and third Oklahoma dentists to graduate from the center, and are the only female dentists to do so to date.
The one-of-a-kind Kois Center offers a unique educational experience in dentistry through evidence-based, unbiased scientific research. Unlike many programs, classes are updated annually, enabling graduates and their practices to stay on the cutting edge of procedures and technology.
“For our last class, we were given the opportunity to bring cases from our practices to present and be evaluated by the greatest minds in our profession, not just at the podium but in the audience as well,” Spurlock said.
“Our classmates are dentists we have admired from afar, observing their beautiful dentistry on social media as well as in dental publications. The cases presented by both ourselves and our classmates were unique, complex and challenging.”
Both doctors said admission to this program was very professionally fulfilling, and that the Kois
Center represents the best continuing education the dental profession has to offer. Under the direction of founder Dr. John Kois, the material presented is not driven by paid sponsorships from dental supply companies, but rather is vetted by countless hours of research, clinical trials and independent studies.
During the course, Spurlock presented a tough case involving a patient in her mid-70s who had developed an anterior open bite issue, in which some of the top and bottom teeth don’t make contact when the teeth are closed. A comprehensive treatment plan was created to improve her function and the aesthetics of her smile.
Jenkins, meanwhile, presented a case involving a woman in her 30s who wanted cosmetic treatment after orthodontic treatment. Issues with bone loss and the stability of her teeth made the treatment challenging, but the results were excellent.
“By far, the best part of attending the Kois Center is the quality and character of people that it attracts,” Spurlock said. “Dr. Kois is unmatched in his quest for improving our profession through science. His lecture style, the science, systems, technology and techniques are unparalleled, but the energy and the heartbeat of the center are what resonate with us. It’s what continues to inspire us long after we have returned home and compels us to return.”

LUMIERE FLORAL DESIGNS OWNER TAKES JOY IN SHARING BEAUTY
ARTICLE BY KAYLIN HILL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Ever since she was young, Rylee Meek remembers enjoying picking wildflowers and designing her own bouquets for her mom. But it wasn’t until 2015, when she was gifted a botany book by an aunt, that she began her trek into studying flowers, plants and gardening.
Over the years, her studies grew into a hobby, which grew into the creation of her business, Lumiere Floral Designs.
“It has brought so much joy to make something beautiful and place it into a space for others to share. My favorite places to be, have always been the botanical gardens and at weddings and events full of beautiful bouquets,” says Rylee.
Like many businesses, Lumiere Floral Designs shifted its service options. They strive to alleviate the strain of providing quality flowers to brighten up their customers’ homes—especially at a time when a little bit of brightness is really needed in our world.
Lumiere offers bi-weekly or monthly deliveries that include flowers to keep lobbies, desks, entryways, dining room tables and coffee tables looking fresh and beautiful.
“My first-ever subscription client was a small coffee shop in Moore that took a chance on me; I made four arrangements bi-weekly for them, and it grew my business in a huge way! Our subscription program is still going strong to this day.”
She added, “We love how quickly OKC is growing and changing, and we feel really lucky to be part of the journey.”

Looking to create your own spring floral arrangements? Rylee shared her No. 1 recommendation.
“Our favorite springtime flowers have got to be the trendy ranunculus. It's like a rose but delicate and blooms out so beautifully," she says. “We use ranunculus in a lot of our bridal bouquets and specialty arrangements!“
