GLAMPING IN THE TREETOPS
SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITIES
Home. So much contained in that little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable.
Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” In this issue, we include ways to make your home cozier and more appealing, as well as trips and adventures to take – knowing that it’s always good to come back home.
But whether you’re in a weekend beach house, a treehouse, or your own house, what’s most important are the people we spend time there with. It’s the people in our lives--our family, friends, and those in our community, that make a house a “home.” We love living in the St Louis Metro and the many businesses and people that make up our home here. And we enjoy bringing those people and places to our readers!
We always hear from readers who say they keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it as coffee table art or an accessory in their home that they’re proud of. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

WHEN LIFE GETS TOO CRAZY, HEAD FOR THE TREES!
ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS RoostYou may have gone camping under the stars, but have you ever gone glamping in the treetops? It’s one sure way to find tranquility, privacy and fun in a unique experience that will make memories for a lifetime with friends and family. Here is just a sampling of some of the treehouses available for your next big adventure.
TREELOFT AT
Airbnb.com/rooms/44119404
Nestled in the woods of a 120-acre farm in Perryville, Missouri, you’ll find TreeLoft at BaseCamp, perfect for a romantic getaway. This luxury treehouse for two features a gas fireplace, skylight over the king size bed for night sky gazing, with a remote solar shade to keep you sleeping in the morning hours, a rain shower,
soaking tub and plush robes. The kitchen offers an indoor/outdoor coffee bar and small appliances for all cooking needs. Outside is a hot tub amongst the towering Eastern Red Cedar trees, with a separate deck for grilling and a firepit.
The owners say it is their hope that upon your stay you will be reconnected to nature and to the one you came with. “We created the TreeLoft with an inspired state of mind, and we are hopeful that the same inspiration will be experienced and reflected during your stay. There is very limited cellphone service, no Wi-Fi or television at the TreeLoft with intention to truly allow our guests the authentic experience of disconnecting. Slow down, breathe deep, nurture and hopefully, just maybe, you’ll leave more awake to the life you must step back into.”

As a family-owned business, Luxury Drivers STL professionals specialize in a service-first approach designed to deliver superior comfort and personal attention at every step. "When our family began this business, we wanted to bring ease and highend comfort to those needing transportation in our area. Also, the safety of our clients is the top priority," promises Barry Sr.
He says the services of the company's experienced drivers and their all-inclusive

We do everything possible to accommodate our clients’ wishes and make their driving experience memorable and enjoyable."
Many clients leverage the convenience of these drivers to and from St. Louis area airports, casinos, conventions, medical appointments, company meetings, sporting events, family and social gatherings, date nights, school pick-ups and drop-offs, as well as executive or personal transportation.
With 24/7 online booking available, the bookings are on a first come first serve basis.
There is a limit of three people per booking, and Barry recommends advanced bookings. However, Barry Jr. adds that same-day service is sometimes possible from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"As trusted extensions of client families, we're honored to fill in for driving needs when relatives, friends or neighbors can't. And, we're also happy to drive for others who have challenges with nighttime glare during evening hours," he says.
“We go the extra mile to accommodate the needs and requests of our clientele,” Barry assures.

In addition to being named to the Top 123 Designers List, Marcia also was designated a Top 200 Design Influencer in 2021 and 2022.
PRIME EXAMPLE:
Spotlighted with this feature is a recent example of how Marcia Moore Design professionals recreated a gathering area via a 'getting in the swing of family fun' approach, as inspired by the clients' passion for golf.
When the lower level of a home in Frontenac was heavily flooded, the homeowners turned to Marcia's team for a complete remodel. Prior, the space was filled with a traditional bar and pool table, surrounded by dark, heavy wood paneling. Marcia says they produced a fresh, light-hearted family-friendly space appealing to all ages.
"We created distinctive areas for different uses, such as workouts, a juice and wine bar, a fireplace with TV viewing and a game room," she explains.
The flooring is also distinct by area. The workout space is 36x36-inch luxury vinyl tiles that look like concrete. The juice bar sits atop woven flooring made from renewable vegetable compounds rather than petroleum products. The rest of the floor is luxury vinyl planks with a wood grain. "This defines each area and keeps the flooring from feeling cavernous," says Marcia. "All of these floors are perfect for lower levels. They hold up to water, work well on a concrete slab and are warmer than tile, without adding a heated floor."
To the workout space were added two photographs by Petros Koublis, a New York City photographer whose work has a wonderful, dreamlike, ethereal feeling to it, Marcia shares.
Fun original art by Sue Graef, an artist from Clearwater, Florida, and accessories keep the bar jovial and colorful. Marcia says the refrigeration unit has upper wine storage and lower refrigerator drawers. A microwave and ice machine complete the appliances. The cabinets are sleek and shiny, styled with fingertip pullouts so there's no need for hardware, she adds.
The fireplace/television seating area is also viewable from workout machines behind a sofa.
The game room is set for pool, board games, eating and lounging, with a spot to add a shuffleboard table.
All the art prints in the game room are from paintings of famous golf courses, done by a variety of artists.

Family Is Ultra-Important And Leaving A Helpful Legacy Is Paramount
Family is the heart of a home and life.
When protecting one's family and business is the highest priority, why trust just anyone with estate planning? The Kaiser Law Firm, P.C. comprises two experienced estate planning lawyers and a dedicated staff, all of whom assure they devote themselves to their clients’ priorities.
"We provide our clients with peace of mind, knowing that everything they've worked hard for during their lifetimes is protected for everyone they love. Family is the key part of our business, and when clients come to us, we treat them like family," says Philip 'Phil' Kaiser, Esq., owner. "We believe that there's no law firm that's going to care as much about a client's particular situation as our firm does."
"Almost any law firm can draft a contract, set up a trust, or construct a living will, but not many lawyers take the time to understand an individual client’s goals and fears," says Andy Kaiser, Phil's son and partner of the firm.
Together, this group handles planning for businesses, estates and wealth protection. Business planning advice relates to starting an operation, increasing its revenue, selling it, and all stages in between. Estate planning spans various life stages: single adults, married couples, children going to college, blended families and retirement. Their wealth protection covers steps for high net worth individuals, pre-nuptials and post-selling companies.
At The Kaiser Law Firm, P.C., Phil says they pride themselves on the following qualities:
• Rapport. "Our entire legal team is personable and approachable. We get to know each client on a personal level."
• Commitment. "When a client chooses us, our goal is to stay with him or her for the long term. A business’s legal needs are continuous, and a family estate plan should frequently be evaluated over the years."
• Availability. "In a mega law firm, it is often difficult to get past the receptionist when you have a question between meetings. Solo attorneys are often stretched too thin to be able to respond quickly. The team approach we take at The Kaiser Law Firm, P.C. allows us to be available to our clients at almost any time."
• Preparation. "Our attorneys both have master’s degrees in tax law, which allows us to educate and advise our clients on how to best structure their plans to reduce taxes."
As founder of the firm, Phil says he launched the firm based on core values regarding long-term relationships centered on confidence and trust; fully understanding clients’ circumstances, needs, goals and anxieties; staying abreast of new developments in the law and how those developments affect clients; using the most appropriate, efficient and cost-effective strategies to accomplish clients' objectives; and making positive differences in clients' lives.
As an ongoing commitment to informing and guiding others, Andy typically presents two seminars a month, one on Estate Planning and
one on Asset Protection Planning. "Our educational seminars are free and open to the public, so we welcome all friends and family," he says.
Andy's seminars are held at the firm's office located at 16090 Swingley Ridge Road, Suite 360, in Chesterfield. He says seating is limited, so those interested in reserving a spot should email Brigget Kolb at brigget@kaiserlawfirm.com or fill out an online form provided at KaiserLawFirm. com/Reports/Seminars.cfm .
Andy's next available, 60-minute seminar is April 13 at 4:30-5:30 p.m.: "Top 10 Estate Planning Mistakes (and how to avoid them)."
"It's been our experience that most people make at least one of 10 critical estate planning mistakes. These mistakes could
cost you and your family needless anxiety, as well as unnecessary court costs, attorney's fees, taxes, nursing home bills, and exposure to the claims of in-laws and other unforeseen creditors," he says.
Andy says that every day, his own family is his driving force. "And I want to make sure that whatever I would do for my family, I do the same things for client's families as well."
As Phil summarizes, "We've been around quite a long time, and we believe that we can predict quite a few things that will happen in people's lives. We believe that we can create a plan for people that will not only last for their generation but likely will last for generations to come."

Expecting a higher standard in senior care and person-centered support is the norm at two senior care living communities in St. Louis County: Parc Provence and McKnight Place Assisted Living & Memory Care.
"Our services are designed to make every day more pleasant and convenient for residents. We understand how challenging life can be, especially when caring for an aging loved one with dementia or other forms of memory loss. As trusted experts in memory care, our staff specialists truly care about our residents and that extends to their loved ones," says Dominique Charles, marketing coordinator.
She says these communities excel in helping residents live fulfilling, active and happy lives.
As an Alzheimer's disease and dementia care facility, Parc Provence is centrally located in Creve Coeur at 605 Coeur de Ville Drive. McKnight Place Assisted Living & Memory Care is located at Three McKnight Place, while McKnight Place Extended Care is at Two McKnight Place.
The Parc Provence team works closely with medical director, Dr. David Carr, and associate medical director, Dr. Lenise Cummings-Vaughn, who are leading specialists in Alzheimer’s disease and geriatric medicine at Washington University’s School of Medicine in St. Louis, as well as the appropriate authorities and experts, to ensure they're doing everything they can for the health and safety of residents and their families.
Parc Provence is nationally known as a model of excellence for memory care; it was even recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a 2022-23 Best Memory Care Community, within the group's

U.S. News staffers produce these ratings from consumer-satisfaction survey data reflecting the viewpoints of more than 200,000 current residents, and their family members or appointed representatives, living in thousands of senior living communities nationwide. For memory care, scores are derived only from family responses.
Additionally, Parc Provence is a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating.
Kathy Aragon, Parc Provence administrator, says the care team at Parc Provence offers a wide range of activities for residents, tailoring them to personal interests and abilities. "Parc Provence’s art and music therapy programs are designed to help residents achieve their full potential while bringing a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment, socialization and joy," she adds. "It’s a rare therapy session that doesn’t include smiles."
She says the community’s two chefs use farm-fresh ingredients to create gourmet meals with optimal, comprehensive nutrition.
The Parc Provence ambiance offers the security of a consistent routine while encouraging residents to be physically and mentally active, she assures.
"McKnight Place has become known for its high-quality amenities, personalized services and expert care, but its history of making people a priority is what really sets itself apart from many other senior communities," says Laura Ritthamel, McKnight Place Assisted Living & Memory Care executive director.
Because peace of mind is vital, she says McKnight Place has on-site nursing care, physical therapy and occupational therapy available.

GATESWORTHProviding an independent-inspired, living environment with high-level personal touches is what Laura says McKnight Place has specialized in for 30 years. She says the local owners have an onsite office. "They're dedicated to the St. Louis region, and are deeply invested in day-to-day operations and the lives of all concerned. One of our differentiators is that residents and family members with questions or concerns have access to decision-makers."
McKnight Place has luxury apartments, ranging in size from large suites to one-bedroom apartments. Laura says each unit includes beautiful crown molding and wood-style flooring, kitchens with custom wood cabinets and granite countertops, full-size refrigerators, spacious bathrooms, large windows providing natural light and nine-foot ceilings.
She adds that McKnight Place also has 27 special memory-care suites for senior adults of all cognitive abilities. "The suites were designed to provide a secure and supportive lifestyle that maintains the look, feel and familiarity of each resident’s homes."
The McKnight Place dining experience is spearheaded by award-winning chef John Morales. Each meal offers fresh, flavorful ingredients. Laura says meal satisfaction is guaranteed and special food requests are welcome.
One favorite component of McKnight Place is that amenities are all-inclusive. Residents benefit from beautifully-landscaped gardens, outdoor spaces, walking

Other amenities' services include social and learning opportunities; all utilities, including local and long-distance telephone; more than 50 high-definition channels of satellite TV; wireless internet throughout the entire building; weekly linen service; daily housekeeping services; personal laundry services; assistance with dressing and showering as needed; and medication management and administration.
Laura confirms that McKnight Place doesn't use points, tiers or levels of care to escalate resident fees, which are often commonplace in this industry. "McKnight Place offers true, all-inclusive rates that are simple, predictable and worry-free. Predictable pricing is an innovative, all-inclusive fixed-rate program with no buy-in fees."
McKnight Place continues The Gatesworth’s tradition of excellence in senior living, states Laura. After being established in 1988, she says The Gatesworth revolutionized what it meant to be a senior living community, providing innovative services and an active residential lifestyle.
"At The Gatesworth Communities, wellness isn’t a special program or separate initiative. It’s a part of daily life," declares Dominique.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh.
We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.A. STENGER PHOTOGRAPHYA peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.
Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.
We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while
others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.
Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.
Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.
CONTINUED >
I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.
From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.
