We're Rooting For You In 2025!

For many, this time of year brims with excitement and possibility: a fresh slate, new goals and horizons to explore. But for others, January might come with reminders of past attempts that didn’t pan out or the pressure that this year must be different.

As we approached this edition of Chesterfield City Lifestyle, we did so with a mindset of creating something meaningful; not about quick fixes or checking boxes, but about fostering sustainable, longterm improvements. The kind of changes that nurture your physical, emotional and mental well-being for the long haul.

In our home, we’ve shifted our focus from simply chasing goals to embracing small, daily changes and moments to reground ourselves. Those little habits and special moments have a way of growing into something bigger, achievements that inspire us to stay balanced and keep moving forward.

When it comes to life, whether in business, relationships, food, home, or health, it’s not the some days that define our outcomes, but the most days . For better or worse, the choices we make consistently are the ones that truly shape our lives.

Think about it: taking a vacation every day isn’t feasible, but planning a few trips a year? Absolutely. Enjoying a steak dinner with cocktails and dessert every night might not work for your health, but indulging occasionally? Perfectly fine!

It’s not the occasional decisions that matter most; it’s the regular ones.

So, this year, dream big and take small steps daily. Book that trip and prioritize regular rest in your week. Join a fitness community and savor the dessert from that local spot you’ve been eyeing. It’s about finding balance and creating habits that make life more peaceful, fulfilling, and fabulous.

We’re rooting for you—and we can’t wait to see all the ways you shine in 2025.

Here’s to a wonderful year ahead!

Warmly,

January 2025

The Roasted Purpose Founder, Joanna Johnsen, Says Her Coffee Benefits Health And Home

With Cause

During conversations with Joanna Johnsen, the first thing one notices is her megawatt smile and boundless energy. In only a few minutes’ time, it becomes clear that Joanna has enthusiasm for family, community and coffee.

“I’m a lot,” she admits with a laugh. “I had a dream one night in 2022, and by the time my husband woke up that morning, I already had our packaging, domain and name registry complete.”

Joanna doesn't waste time when she has a passion for something. Prior to that 2022 dream, she says she'd been struggling with joint pain. Working with a nutritionist, Joanna discovered she had a multitude of food sensitivities, all of which contributed to the health issues that kept her from feeling her best. Dairy, gluten and artificial flavors became ingredients she needed to avoid.

She was advised to increase her protein intake by adding it to her morning coffee. “My morning coffee was a ritual for me, but with my food sensitivities, it was hard because I had to avoid whey protein due to dairy, and vegan proteins because of peas. So I came up with the perfect ingredient to add to my coffee: collagen.”

Founder Joanna Johnsen

Collagen is a protein that contributes to the strength and elasticity of tissues throughout the human body. Accounting for nearly a third of the total protein in the body, collagen is a building block for muscles, cartilage, ligaments, bones, hair and skin. Collagen is an important part of the gastrointestinal tract, and aids in the structure of the vascular system. With age, collagen levels decrease, impacting all of these systems.

Although Joanna recognized the importance of collagen protein, the frequent travel she and her family did made it difficult to ensure she was able to always add this to her daily routine. From the frustrations of having to pull over several times a day to make coffee and the mess of adding collagen to her brew, Joanna created The Roasted Purpose.

The Roasted Purpose is a truly unique coffee. Free of dairy, gluten and artificial ingredients, it packs 18 grams of protein, derived from grass-fed bovine collagen. The Roasted Purpose is blended, not brewed, and it can be served hot or iced. Simply add a scoop to water and blend for 15-20 seconds.

Current latte flavors include blueberry, chocolate-covered banana, cinnamon dolce, creamy caramel, hazelnut, horchata, maple pumpkin spice and peppermint mocha, in addition to chocolate, vanilla, chai, matcha and unflavored proteins.

Joanna doesn't stop there, however. She says her passion for health extends to the community. For every purchase of coffee from The Roasted Purpose, a portion of sales is donated to Restoration House of St. Louis. Restoration House is an immersion project aimed at helping St. Louis urban youth achieve success through a holistic approach for each child. Kids served by Restoration House have received full scholarships to college and trade school. They receive meals, hygiene essentials, clothing, laundry and assistance obtaining necessary forms of identification that are required when applying for housing and employment.

CHESTERFIELD DENTIST WANTS TO HELP HIS PATIENTS BE ‘THE BEST VERSION OF THEMSELVES’

Teeth And Well-Being

ARTICLE BY ROBIN SEATON JEFFERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINA SCHMIDT
““I believe dentistry is not only about giving people a great experience, but helping people be the best version of themselves.

“I believe dentistry is not only about giving people a great experience, but helping people be the best version of themselves,” says John Pastorek, D.M.D., or “Dr. P” as he’s known by his patients and staff. “It’s not just about your teeth, but your overall well-being. It’s a big part of why I’m so passionate about getting to know my patients and helping them build the confidence to thrive.”

John and his wife, Tara Pastorek, opened Monarch Valley Dental in April 2024, though John has been a dentist for more than a decade. “I wanted to do this differently. We're very comprehensive with our approach.”

From a young age, John says he knew he wanted to be a dentist, because he always has been passionate about people. Growing relationships with his patients and helping them build confidence is his favorite part of the job.

“I’m chasing my vision of a dream practice,” he says.

John’s no stranger to chasing dreams. Born and raised in Chesterfield, he married his dream girl, Tara. The two have a daughter, Logan, another on the way, and a dog, Winston, who patients might just see around the office.

Winston is a 5-year old black Golden Doodle. “The first time we brought him to the office, it was just meant to be a fun one-time thing. But his positive impact was felt immediately. For instance, for years we just couldn’t

get one of our patients to smile. Then I see this guy with Winston, melting over this dog with his paws on the counter,” John says. “It was endearing. Winston’s been a regular with me at work ever since.”

Monarch Valley Dental, in Chesterfield, is a 3,000-square-foot office with large open windows and natural lighting. They offer the latest technology in dentistry including:

• Digital Radiographs: All radiographs at this office are electronic. For situations where a more in-depth view is required, the office has a dental CT scanner as well.

• A digital scanner delivers 3D digital impressions without the necessity for the putty-like material used in traditional dental impressions. This is used for everything. “The most profound impact has been that we can almost always actually show you what’s going on with your mouth,” John says.

• An upgraded system to clean teeth: “EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy” involves a dye applied to teeth, which stains any plaque or gunk and shows how clean teeth are at home. Then an air-polishing technology is used to gently remove the plaque and build-up.

• Other technology includes a soft-tissue laser and an intraoral camera. John says the office soon will add a 3D printer and a mill with the goal of eventually being able to offer same-day permanent crowns.

While modern tech and an updated office environment were crucial to his vision, John is quick to point out: "The fancy equipment and chic optics are an awesome feature for our patients; but our secret sauce is really the emphasis on quality of care and the enhanced level of service we can provide."

Monarch Valley Dental offers services from regular cleanings and checkups to periodontal treatment and maintenance. Other treatments provided include root canals, crowns and fillings, fluoride treatments, sealants, porcelain veneers, orthodontic clear aligner therapy, tooth whitening and implant-based solutions.

John attended Chaminade College Preparatory School and went on to graduate from the University of Dayton with his bachelor’s degree in pre-dentistry and a minor in psychology. He earned a master's of business degree from Missouri Baptist University and his dental degree from Midwestern University in Arizona. He then completed his General Practice Residency at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He also graduated from the Kois Center, a prestigious post-graduate continuing education program in Seattle.

Aside from dentistry, John has been active in both ice hockey and lacrosse. He played lacrosse at the University of Dayton and also, through his mother's bloodline, was proud to represent the Italian National team at the 2006 World Games. He also coached lacrosse at both the high school and collegiate levels for nine years, including being part of five-time state championship teams at Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School.

As an ambassador and part of the dental team for the nonprofit organization “Brace for Impact 46,” John says he provides help and dental care for underserved children in Haiti.

He adds that he makes it a priority to pursue higher level continuing education to perfect his craft. To that end, he's an active member of the Spear Study Club and the Academy of General Dentistry.

“We're creating something special here,” John says. “I didn’t want to look back at 85 years old and wonder ‘What if?’ We are continually evolving and pushing boundaries on how to improve what a dental experience should look and feel like. Our goal is that we want to be in the conversation, where if somebody just moved to town and needed a dentist, for the people that know us, they would have to say: ‘You have to go to see Dr. P.’”

Strength For Independence

STAIRS

Difficulty with stairs is a common complaint of aging. Losing this skill can result in needing to move out of a home, and impacts one’s ability to navigate. We recommend practicing stairs daily, slowly working up to five reps in a row to build leg strength and endurance.

FLOOR TRANSFERS

Being able to get up and down from the floor is an essential skill to maintain while aging. Many people lose this ability, which can have severe consequences, especially after a fall. We recommend practicing getting up and down from the floor on a daily basis. If needed, you can practice near a couch or chair for added assistance.

WEIGHTED CARRY

Weighted carries are simply carrying heaving objects over short distances repeatedly. Start with a light weight of 3 pounds and build up to heavier weights as one gets stronger. This exercise works on hand, shoulder, core and leg strength all at the same time, making it very effective.

EXHAUSTION IS OUT: Self-Care Is In

Advice Editorial: Easy, Trendy Ways To Take Care In 2025

Mel is a St. Louis transplant by way of Chicago. She’s been writing for City Lifestyle for a few years as a moonlight contributor, spending her daytime hours as a corporate social media manager. She finds self-care important to balance her fast-paced digital career.

It’s a New Year and a fresh start. Self-care is a common topic when January rolls around, but it can often insinuate pushing harder at the gym, eating in a calorie deficit, or other actions that ultimately punish and deplete the body.

After such a busy holiday season, turning to self-care can help start 2025 off on a restorative and calm foot, one that sets the mood for putting yourself first.

Gone are the days of running on all fumes and draining the battery. It’s time to take care and feel your best. When we feel our best, we perform better at work, we give our friends and family a positive attitude and we feel energized to achieve new goals. Instead of gearing up for more and more, self-care can offer a “less is more” mentality.

“WHEN WE FEEL OUR BEST, WE PERFORM BETTER AT WORK, WE GIVE OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND WE FEEL ENERGIZED TO ACHIEVE NEW GOALS.”
Mel Boban

DIGITAL DETOX:

The easiest of the recommendations to take care is to just simply unplug. “Airplane mode” is a friend. Taking time, even just 30 minutes, to leave phones behind, placing them in another room or detaching from connections with a power down can help give the peace of mind needed for a quick reset. If feeling bold, take a weekend trip and leave laptops or tablets behind, allowing physical distance from devices that can be associated with stress or work. If this is a struggle, consider a lock box with a timer to help get through the challenge.

NATURE WALKS:

Moving outside, even in the cold, has so many benefits. Using all the senses to appreciate what nature has to offer, feel the fresh air and catch a dose of vitamin D is preferred for many over indoor machines under fluorescent lights. Follow what the Swedish say when it’s cold: “There is no bad weather, only bad clothes.”

SCALP CARE :

These treatments are popping up everywhere across salons and spas and have gone viral recently across social media. The treatments can range from shorter 30-minute express sessions all the way to 90-minute extended treatments with facial add-ons. These specialized services that focus strictly on the scalp, from massage to steam treatment and hair masks, are so relaxing and leave people feeling zen. Many of the locations offering scalp or “head spa” treatments have special chairs that support the neck and halo-shaped water jets that are uber comfortable.

SOUND BATHS:

If up for something really different, indulge ears in a sound bath. Musical instruments are used to create sound waves that foster a meditative experience. Participants gather around, similar to a yoga setting, to enjoy the relaxing environment and reset from stress or overwhelm.

STRETCHING:

Physical recovery is just as trendy as working out. Gyms and fitness studios have been offering sessions focused on recovery and especially stretching. Giving the body a chance to slow down and lengthen back out after a round of tough workouts can be crucial to the future performance in the gym, especially for runners. Tight muscles can lead to injuries or decreased range of motion, so the time spent giving hardworking muscles some TLC is well worth it in the long run. For those who aren’t a yogi, attending a stretching session can offer similar benefits without the learning curve of yoga positions.

RED LIGHT THERAPY:

Tanning beds are out! If looking to relax under some lights, look for red light therapy treatments. Benefits can range from stress release to improved hair growth and even improved sleep.

FOOD FREEDOM In 2025

ADVICE EDITORIAL: SAY GOODBYE TO DIETS, HELLO TO CLEAN EATING

ARTICLE BY ALANA FRAVELL, WELLNESS GUIDE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANON KRUEGER, DELANEY JEAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Clean eating isn’t just a trend; it’s the key to a healthier, more energized life. What one eats fuels body and mind, and processed foods work against consumers. As a former chronic dieter, my life has changed dramatically since eating clean. I’ve lost nearly 100 pounds without restricting, and now teach clients how to do the same.

WHY GO CLEAN?

• Nutritional Void: Packaged foods lack nutrients, leaving bodies undernourished and craving more.

• Harmful Additives: Chemicals in processed foods cause inflammation, weight gain and long-term damage.

• Addiction by Design: Sugar, fat and salt in processed foods are engineered to keep people hooked. Yikes!

FIVE STEPS TO START EATING CLEAN:

1. Go Nutrient-Dense: Prioritize whole, colorful foods full of vitamins and minerals. If it looks like meat or a vegetable, it’s probably good for you!

2. Strive for Five: Fewer, recognizable ingredients are better.

3. Avoid Overly Processed Foods: If it can't be made at home (cheesy-poofs), skip it.

4. Experiment: Try eliminating sugar, gluten, or dairy to see how you feel.

5. Strive for 80/20: Give yourself grace. Be clean 80% of the time and flexible for the rest.

Clean eating isn’t about perfection; it’s about balance. Fuel your body with real, nourishing foods; you’ll feel better, crave less and reclaim your health. Nutrition is the baseline for health; make 2025 the year you go clean! And, if you’re like me, you’ve probably tried every “diet” out there, so why not try a new lifestyle instead?

Visit AlanaFravell.com for clean cooking lessons and free resources.

whirled PEAS!

Vegetable juice is a great addition to your diet especially if you want to lose weight, gain energy, and feel great. Sometimes life gets too busy and you don’t have the time to cook healthy meals. Fall in love with leafy greens, fresh fruit, nut milks, and chia seeds all combined to make a quick, easy, and delicious contribution to your day.

As we age, or sometimes just due to genetics, the skin on our upper eyelids can start to hood over and creep towards our lashes. A heavy upper eyelid can be caused by excess skin, a loose upper eyelid muscle, a low sitting brow, or any combination of these. Fortunately, there are several surgical options to address these concerns: upper eyelid blepharoplasty, upper eyelid ptosis repair, and brow lift. Each procedure can be tailored to the individual's needs, helping to restore a more youthful, refreshed look.

e Art of Eyelid Transformation

"Patients complain that they can't put their makeup on easily, or their eyelids feel heavy, or that they feel like they can't see comfortably. Sometimes they develop a subconscious habit of holding their brows up to see more easily, which can lead to a headache or fatigue at the end of the day."

DR. SARHADDI’S MOST COMMON PROCEDURES AND TIPS

UPPER EYELID BLEPHAROPLASTY

Sometimes referred to as an upper eyelid lift, this procedure can be safely and easily performed in the office under local anesthesia (a numbing injection). The excess skin is measured and removed, and if there is excess fat, it can be reduced as well, giving the upper eyelid a more open appearance. Sutures are typically removed in five days, with patients typically looking presentable at two weeks.

UPPER EYELID PTOSIS REPAIR

As we age, the muscle that holds the eyelid open can stretch and loosen, causing the eyelid to sit at the level of the pupil rather than being lifted to the top of the iris. This can create a tired appearance. Ptosis repair can also be performed in the office, under local anesthesia, at the same time as an upper blepharoplasty.

BROW LIFT

This procedure lifts the brows to address heaviness in the upper eyelids and enhances the overall appearance of the face. A low brow position can contribute to some, all, or relatively none of the upper eyelid hooding. The best way to determine this is by scheduling a consultation for a full evaluation. Brow lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia, with small incisions hidden behind the hairline.
