To see things from an eternal perspective that what you are doing now will pay off years from now. And isn't that the same in our daily walk, the choice to rise above the noise, the choice to encourage a friend, the choice to acknowledge that joy does not exist without hard work and sacrifice. In these pages, you will see a glimpse inside our shoot with four Denver moguls at Gasmoney Studios, an insider on the face behind The Bindery, and an exclusive interview with Founder and CEO, Susan Kiely of Women with a Cause.

CITING MICK JAGGER HEALTH ISSUE, ROLLING STONES POSTPONE TOUR, INCLUDING DENVER CONCERT The Rolling Stones announced Saturday that the band has postponed the North American leg of its upcoming tour due to a health issue with lead singer Mick Jagger. The North American portion of the “No Filter” tour was set to begin in Miami on April 20. The band was scheduled to play at Broncos Stadium at Mile High in Denver on May 26. “Mick Jagger has been advised by doctors that he cannot go on tour at this time as he needs medical treatment. The doctors have advised Mick that he is expected to make a complete recovery so that he can get back on stage as soon as possible,” a press release announcing the postponement stated. Tour promoters AEG Presents and Concerts West said people who have tickets to attend the shows should keep them, as they will be valid for the rescheduled dates. “I hate letting our fans down and I’m hugely disappointed to have to postpone the tour but am looking forward to getting back on stage as soon as I can,” Jagger said through the release. Women With A Cause
Every woman has an agenda. Every woman has direction. Every woman has a reason.
But more often than not, it’s harder for some to find these things on their own. This is where Women with a Cause (WWAC) steps in. This Denver non-profit’s mission is to empower women through financial literacy, providing them the education that leads to a well-paying, fulfilling career. WWAC is focused on bridging the common income and support gaps by providing a safety net while women achieve true self-sufficiency. “Women come to us broken and abandoned,” says Founder and CEO of WWAC Susan Kiely. “But then they blossom, and when they leave us, they are empowered. They are no longer ‘victims’ that are dependent on men who mistreat them, extended families who

belittle them and government aide. They become women who pay their taxes, empower their children and enjoy each new day.”
“I understand what these women are experiencing because I have a childhood background full of dysfunction,” says Susan.

their families. It wasn’t until her husband’s retirement that she brought her work to Denver. Susan grew up on the East Coast with a mother whose poor choices in men resulted in physical and sexual abuse for not only her but Susan as well.
But whether she realizes it or not, Susan is also that wind beneath so many women’s wings. At just 26-years-old, Ishamina Johnson is a mother of two and working to make her and her children’s lives just that much greater. CONTINUED >

“I am proud to be a scholar of WWAC because it was a program that I had to work hard to get into and I had to prove to them that I was ready to work and change my life,” says Ishamina. “Now, I graduate from my transitional housing in six months, and I’m working towards a degree in human services, pre-social work from the community college of Denver. I also work part-time as a child care aide at a daycare.” Ishamina is one of many who have benefitted from WWAC and shares her advice to anyone who may be feeling lost. “Define your priorities. Put your faith and your kids first,

and everything else will follow. Don’t be afraid to do something just because you or someone else tells you that you can’t,” says Ishamina. “Sometimes life is hard, but the hardships in our lives are necessary for growth.” In the six years since launching in Denver, WWAC has helped over 20 women graduate and begin a career. “Since ’06 I have been the ‘staff.’ Yet our program is women, not woman with a cause. We depend on volunteers and the generosity of others,” says Susan. “Two years ago I hired a dynamic young woman, Shellby Jones, and I hope that in three years she can take over the daily operation of WWAC.” “The minute Susan and I met, I knew I was looking at my next grand adventure,” says Shellby. “WWAC holds a special place in my heart. It is an organization focused on deep change, and it is impacting the lives of single moms and their children across the state.” Shellby is currently the Senior Director of Operations a WWAC. “Lives are being changed. Generational poverty is overcome, financial health is achieved and freedom from all assistance and reliance on others is alleviated,” says Shellby. BOUNDARY-PUSHING CHEF LINDA HAMPSTEN FOX MADE A BIG IMPACT ON THE DENVER DINING SCENE WITH THE OPENING OF HER BRIGHT, SPACIOUS LOHI RESTAURANT THE BINDERY IN LATE 2017. But even though her name is relatively new to us diners, Colorado isn’t new to her. Linda attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and always knew she’d return—she just needed to cook her way around the world first. Now, with the release of her first cookbook, we talked with Linda about being a female in a traditionally male field and her unconventional, refined menus. 34

Denver Moguls IN THE 19TH CENTURY, “ENTREPRENEUR”—FROM THE OLD FRENCH ENTREPRENDRE (“UNDERTAKE”)— WAS USED AS A DESIGNATOR FOR “A MANAGER OR PROMOTER OF THEATRICAL PRODUCTION.” That is, metaphorically speaking, a perfect descriptor for the following ladies, all of whom are driven by their creativity and independence and bask in the freedom of running their own businesses, which are expressions of their individual imaginations.

@ CHERRY CREEK FASHION
Former producer, newspaper journalist and fashion editor, Esther is the originator of Cherry Creek Fashion, a digitally-forward fashion magazine whose raison d’être is to inspire its audience to “show up as their most authentic self.” The magazine was inspired by Cherry Creek’s well-dressed residents and seemingly endless array of boutiques and stores. Its written and video content spotlights different women who express their personal styles while growing their own businesses, such that by leading with the personal styles of its subjects, Cherry Creek Fashion also supports small, local businesses, many of which are women-run. The magazine is confirmation that successful entrepreneurship is rooted in networking: “Denver has an amazing community spirit, and its entrepreneurs love to connect with others.” Esther has her own network of ladies she refers to as #bossbabes, with whom she shares relationships of mutual support, such as Keren Nimmo of networking company Found(h)er, Annie Bloj of event website AnnieBloj.com and Leigh Gordon of The Scout Guide Denver, among others. Since starting a television production company with her sister in St. Lucia years ago, Esther has always taken the entrepreneurial plunge, unafraid of failure, as she prefers to learn firsthand what works and what does not, because, “There is no one better than you to execute your idea, your brand and your business.”

Shae Whitney @ DRAM
It all started with a recipe for sage bitters Shae made on a whim, which was the impetus for her to begin creating other bitters concoctions made from wildcrafted, local plants. The bitters’ popularity among her bartender friends led to the genesis of DRAM Apothecary. DRAM finds its history in an extensive line of bitters that were even featured at their own bar in Silver Plume’s former bread shop. Nowadays, DRAM adds to its bitters, syrups and switchels with a line of drops and sparkling waters that support the body in its resiliency towards stress by spotlighting adaptogenic herbs—which function to help your body handle stress—like ashwaghanda, eleuthero, skullcap, chaga mushroom, and cannabidiol (CBD) from organic Colorado hemp. Shae and her husband Brady produce DRAM’s products in Salida, where they also run an Airbnb on the Poor Farm where they live. Moving to the 5 acres of sprawling land in Salida and expanding the national distribution side of DRAM is just one example of how Shae’s entrepreneurship is founded on independence and honoring her free will to “work any 80 hours of the week” she chooses; because for Shae, “entrepreneurship means freedom.”

Karina Christensen @ DENVER LUXE TEAM
Karina’s entrepreneurship was shaped by her time working for one of our country’s most famous, self-made entrepreneurs, Oprah Winfrey. The single most important lesson Karina learned from Oprah is authenticity, “She wanted to make sure that her beliefs and intentions were not diluted or hijacked…She is the ultimate example of how women can stay in control of their own businesses and control their destinies, yet stay true to themselves.” Karina is a global citizen who calls Denver home. Her Denver Luxe Team is a real estate concierge service, which, just like concierges at 5-star hotels, anticipates the needs of and works for their clients during every step of the home buying/selling process. Karina and her team of specialists developed a seamless process by which clients, either on the buying or selling end, are always kept abreast of the status of their transaction. From working with her team to thinking abstractly about entrepreneurship, Karina emphasizes camaraderie and networking in business: “Asking for help is not a weakness but a strength. So, plug into your network and watch your business grow!”

(CON TI N U ED)
BRET ALEXANDRA. I’d suggest you remember that name because she is among some of the newest heavy hitters stepping up to make this city the arts capital of the west. Bret is a model turned interior designer and founder of The Fourth House (@thefourthhouse), an interior styling company with a focus on thrifted vintage goods. Bret got her start in the creative industries by modeling and occasionally jumping behind the camera as a fashion stylist. For a model turned stylist, stylist turned set designer the natural next step seemed to be a move to L.A. (any creatives relate?), but it was clear that what inspired her creative journey was the community and family in Colorado. “[Denver] is my home. I would rather grow here and keep The Fourth House with our local makers,” says Bret. Bret soon became associated with Guest House, a company that opened her world to interior design and home styling. Leaping off of the strong foundation they gave her, Bret launched her company, The Fourth House. The twelve houses in Astrology inspired the name, specifically, the Fourth House: House of Home, ruled by her own sign Cancer. It was something close to Bret's heart. The Fourth House pioneers a brand of home styling that connects modern elements with a touch of hominess. There is an emphasis within the company to work with thrifted wares which lends the opportunity to partner with other local makers such as Meek Vintage and Haven. As far as styling insights, Bret can’t give away all the industry secrets but let us just say The Fourth House has its eyes on mixing of bold patterns and luxurious velvets. As Bret so eloquently points out, “While styling is a reflection of myself it’s about bringing everyone's vision together into a collaborative effort.” The Denver creative scene has its eyes on Bret Alexandra. We are excited to watch where she goes with the Fourth House and her future collaborations. In the meantime be on the lookout for beautifully bold patterns, something thrifted or a touch of blue velvet. Here is just a sample of Bret's current mood reflecting her interior design style.

GUIDING BRIDES THROUGH THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF THE WEDDING EXPERIENCE, JAQ POUSSOT TRANSFORMS “BRIDEZILLA” INTO AN EQUIPPED, EMPOWERED WOMAN.
I AM A BRIDAL COACH THAT HAS DESIGNED WORKSHOPS AND COACHING PROGRAMS THAT SET BRIDES-TO-BE UP FOR SUCCESS TO PLAN THEIR WEDDING DAY WHILE SUSTAINING AND ENRICHING THEIR RELATIONSHIPS. Mindfully Ever After is about inviting mindfulness and awareness in the world of weddings. I can relate because I was a bride not once, but twice. Both times I felt like I was expected to have the most clarity even though I was the one in the thick of a major life change. This was profoundly confusing. Things like “ribbon color” and “cake flavor” seemed like incredibly important choices when what was actually important was feeling grounded and supported. I do this because I believe marriage or union is an important right of passage and is one that is seemingly becoming less supported by American culture. After a year of research and interviewing women who were in the wedding process or within 12 months post-wedding, I’ve found that wedding planning is an almost universal experience of distraction from what it means to be creating union and a long-lasting, loving relationship. I see what I do as a way to cultivate sustainable relationships—in union, family and business. Our approach is to guide brides through meaningful inquiry and at the individual and collective level. The workshop is a two and a half day experiential retreat addressing the often overlooked aspects of wellness, wholeness and compassion in wedding planning. The result is a cohesive group experience that lends itself to soulful healing and lasting communal support, leaving brides grounded, present and ready for joy in the planning process, on their wedding day and beyond! In the future, I’d like to offer this work to women of all types of relationship as I want to support the entire life span of relationships and growth. TransformingBridezilla.com 66
