Now “style.” style /stīl/ Noun 1. a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed. With our annual “fall fashion” issue, we decided to take a different approach, scrapping Vogue’s September issue precedent and using the pillar of style as our inspiration — not fashion. At our styled shoot at the restored 19th-century ghost town and mineral hot springs known as Dunton Hot Springs, we highlighted well-crafted looks from Cedar & Hyde Mercantile that are guided by principals of design.

WHAT SEEMED LIKE 24 HOURS POST THE DUNTON HOT SPRINGS FALL FASHION SHOOT, THE CEDAR & HYDE CREW WERE OFF AGAIN TO TAKE FLIGHT WITH AN EMPIRE STATE OF MIND. It's not all work and no play when it comes to an NYC buying trip — how else do you think the family-run shop find such an eclectic array of high-quality clothing, home decor and gifts? 7:35 AM
My alarm sounds and I bounce right out of bed toward the view from my room on the 15th floor. I’m at the Ludlow Hotel, a favorite spot in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. I check my email and yesterday’s sales report. The shop had a great day!
8:43 AM
We cruise downstairs to Ludlow Coffee Supply for an iced Almond Milk Latte. My eye catches a woman who I instantly admire. She’s smoking a cigarette and clearly European, so effortlessly chic in a classic, oversized yet pristinely starched white button-down, tied in a dramatic knot that’s brilliantly paired with a banana yellow skirt. I make a mental note: “Yellow is hitting its stride!”
9:00 AM
we arrive at Dry Bar where we wait 30 minutes for a blowout, but it’s absolutely worth the wait. I feel like a new woman with the charming bounce that comes from newly washed tresses!
10:13 AM
With gorgeous hair and an empty stomach, we make a quick stop at Russ & Daughters for a pumpernickel bagel. It's toasted and topped with scallion cream cheese, tomato and wasabi fish row. There’s no time to sit, so we eat it on the go.
10:30 AM
We’re back at the Ludlow for a meeting with folks from NSF Clothing. We chat about Colorado and discover we have mutual friends— so lovely!
11:15 AM
I hail a cab for our next appointment — Il Bisonte, an accessories company from Italy. I can’t wait to get my hands on all that leather!
12:03 PM
We lurk outside the Nanushka fashion show like a groupie for some fabulous people watching.
1:10 PM
We arrive at 180 Store to view two personal favorite brands, Chimala and Lotuff We chose to come on the right day —designers from both brands are on-site, so I engage both in discussions about their design process. My creative canteen is officially full!
2:08 PM
We hit Franklin Street Showroom and discover a new brand: Harlin. Our customers are going to love it!
2:47 PM
My stomach is growling — more like yelling, so we swing by Two Hands, a great little café, for a grain bowl topped with a six minute egg. I sip a glass of rosé.
3:21 PM
We arrive at Black Crane. I always love my meetings here —their space is as comfortable and calm as their clothing.
4:06 PM
We hop a train uptown for a meeting with Amo. We take a shortcut through Union Square and happen upon a farmer’s market where I spot a former employee, Tiff. We laugh and jump and hug wildly amongst beautifully grown radishes.
4:51 PM
It starts to rain, so I throw my jacket over my head in a tent-like formation to protect my ‘do.' I’m running while doing so-ugh! We finally arrive at Mara Hoffman and get right down to business: summer and swim!
5:39 PM
We hop a cab for my last appointment of the day in Bryant Park with Trave Denim.
6:40 PM
We’re on a train that creeps slowly towards my next stop: dinner. I rest my eyes while on the ride.
7:12 PM
We are seated at Uncle Boons where I order crab fried rice and a papaya salad. I enjoy every bite. We toast to a successful day with a tamarind margarita. Totally delicious.
9:30 PM
We arrive back at the hotel, but we don’t go to our room. We stop at the bar for a nightcap and decide to catch up on emails. I check the sales report from the shop. Another great day!
10:34 PM
I slip into bed and call my husband. He reports that all three dogs are happy and well.
11:42 PM
Eyes closed, dreams on!

frnds of ours CLOTHING FOR THE CONSCIOUS CREATIVE
THIS MONTH WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTERVIEW SONORA GOLDMAN AND ANNIE CARLSON OF FRNDS OF OURS, AN UP-AND-COMING DENVER-BASED FASHION LABEL. Goldman and Carlson started frnds of ours this past year, inspired by their shared love of the creative arts, classic silhouettes and a drive to create high-quality clothing from natural fabrics within the U.S. frnds of ours was recently accepted to the Capsule Show in NYC, a fair that celebrates revolutionary women’s clothing brands that are “ahead of the curve of what’s next in fashion.” Also, frnds of ours will soon to be featured in several boutiques nationwide. We hope you find their journey as inspiring as we did. HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET, AND HOW DID THE IDEA OF LAUNCHING A CLOTHING COMPANY EMERGE? We have known each other since the 2nd grade — 17 years to be exact! We both grew up in creative households and knew we eventually wanted to have creative careers. We’ve always been into fashion and collecting vintage garments, and when we were 23, we started a Depop account called Chick Habit where we re-purposed thrifted vintage items, donating a portion of the sales to Planned Parenthood. After that, we began to explore what it would mean to turn this hobby into a career and start our own brand. WHAT MAKERS, ARTISTS, OR MODELS INFLUENCE YOUR DESIGNS? We are heavily influenced by the colors and silhouettes of the 1970s. It was a time where masculine and feminine lines were being mixed more and more. We fell in love with the jumpsuit after looking at old pictures during that period. WHY IS FASHION PERSONALLY IMPORTANT TO YOU BOTH? We both find designing and thrifting extremely therapeutic and “therapy thrift” A LOT. It is so fun to try and develop a uniquely personal wardrobe over time. Our philosophy is that we don’t buy something unless we want to keep it for a very long time. It has become a hobby of mindfully collecting and curating.

I KNOW ALL OF YOUR CLOTHING IS MADE IN BROOKLYN, NY. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW YOUR PIECES ARE MADE AND WHY YOU CHOOSE TO MAKE YOUR CLOTHING IN THE U.S.? Our process starts with an idea. We then draw up our designs and talk through the kind of fabric we want to use. Once our idea is more developed, we meet with a pattern maker and go through a few rounds of samples to perfect the piece. Then the pattern goes to a woman-owned cut and sew facility in Brooklyn! Sonora lives in Brooklyn, which allows us to be hands-on with the clothing making process. It is really special to be able to go to the facility multiple times a week to pick up inventory and maintain a high level of quality. It also allows us to ensure that each person who has a part in making our clothing is paid and valued fairly. The garment districts of L.A. and N.Y. are special places where you get to experience the craftsmanship that goes into clothing. It is important to us to support this local economy that was once bustling with energy and has slowed since moved overseas. WHAT DO YOU LOVE TO DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING? I like to paint and create still lifes. I recently got into baking bread which is an art in itself. -Annie I like to make things with my hands — whether it be sewing curtains for my house, knitting scarfs or repurposing old clothing. I also love to take dance classes and cook for people. -Sonora WHERE DO YOU DREAM OF YOUR COMPANY GOING IN THE FUTURE? We’d love for this to become our full-time careers and have a storefront/studio space for people to shop and see where the pieces are designed! @frnds.of.ours | frndsofours.com

Initially, we had plans to do our annual styled fall fashion shoot in NYC (we still got a 24-hour taste: check page 22). Although after some deep contemplating, and a severe need for tranquility, New York didn’t seem to fit the bill. We needed warmth, friendliness, calmness, peace of mind — things a rural space off the beaten path can provide. Try 25 miles of rugged roads past Telluride, and that’s what you’ll find. A paradise once lost known as Dunton Hot Springs. Today you know it as a luxury retreat in rarefied air at 8600 ft with small huddles of log cabins surrounded by the San Juan Mountain range and flower painted meadows. Oh — and mineral hot springs. Take your pick with which style of holistic bath, either undeveloped and au naturel right outside your log cabin, or opt for a wooden hut with a hammock and manmade saunas filled with hot springs...with a view. A wide-open view of an alpine valley with no signs of the concrete jungle left behind. What was once a ghost town is now filled with warmth (pun intended) from the natural springs down to the hospitality. All of your days are taken care of — food, drinks, extra noise — and this welcoming space is still in a sense a ghost town since the hustle and bustle of everyday life is left at the entrance. In this styled shoot featuring Cedar & Hyde Mercantile’s high-quality clothing, envision yourself in each space. The lifeworn saloon, flower-filled meadows and Hungarian-inspired baths invite you into the old west where life — and fashion — had timeless style.

THERE’S THE FORMER COMBAT VETERAN NEEDING AN OUTLET. The student paying her way through college. The mom-trepenuer building her own brand. “Behind every one of The District Shops at Cherry Creek is a story,” explains founder Lisa Roina. “That’s why I love this. Everyone here is overcoming some adversity or chasing a dream.” “Everyone” for The District means over 300 local makers and small businesses, selling everything from gourmet food to home decor, vintage finds to boutique clothing. The District’s booths range in size from 20 to 600 square feet, and showcase makers, designers and curators alike. “It used to be that a lot of these businesses could only have a physical presence at craft shows or seasonal events,” Roina explains. “We provide a permanent space for them to connect with the community.” Indeed, supporting community is a passion of the District Shops. "We do our best to connect our vendors to one another — there are experienced businesses that have come alongside newer ones, a lot of mentorships that can happen,” Roina says. “At a place like The District, it really is community over competition.” That attitude carries over into other areas, as well. Every month, a different charity is selected for a Sip & Shop or special event — past charities include Free the Girls and Outreach Uganda — so not only can your dollars support local small business, but can have an impact around the Front Range and beyond. Let us introduce you to some of the makers you'll find at The District.

Lux & Luca is the creation of Cassie Herzog, formerly of steampunk jewelry brand Broken Revolt. “Steampunk was awesome, but it doesn’t always appeal to everyone,” laughs Herzog. “Lux & Luca was me reinventing myself.” Herzog describes Lux & Luca as “lifestyle jewelry,” a collection of stamped and statement pieces that mix high-quality metals

with bold, empowering messages. Mixing the delicate, feminine aspects of jewelry with in-your-face confidence and power is what the brand is all about. “For a while, the trend was all this tiny, dainty jewelry,” says Herzog, “I wanted to go against that and make big, chunky necklaces that make a statement.” The brand’s timely messages of female empowerment are resonating with a lot of women, and one of the cast of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black has even been seen sporting one of Herzog’s cuffs. “It’s really interesting the responses I get,” Herzog shares. “There are women who are really going through something who will tell me that a message on one of my cuffs was just what they needed. Others will say that they love a certain piece, but they just don’t feel like they can pull it off. I always tell them that they absolutely can — they just have to own it.” CONTINUED >

MEET YOUR MAKER(S)

For anyone familiar with the large teal truck that is The Street Boutique, a mobile fashion shop often spotted at local Farmer’s Markets and watering holes; it might be surprising to discover that it now has its very own non-mobile location: The District Shops at Cherry Creek.
THE STREET BOUTIQUE
“The fashion truck has worked so well for me because of the flexibility it offers,” explains Lindsay Trees, shop owner and creator. “I’m a mom. I don’t have a bunch of employees. I can set my own pace and not get spread too thin. The new booth in The District checks all those same boxes.” Trees, a fashion merchandising major in college, took a detour through corporate America but always dreamed of working in the fashion industry again one day. After stumbling upon the idea of a fashion truck, Trees felt the stars had aligned, and The Street Boutique was born just a few months later. The boutique aims to provide curated fashion at a reasonable price point. “We’re all about being accessible,” says Trees. “With the fashion truck, we can come to you. And with the new location in The District, you’ll always be able to find us.”

LOVE HARPER
It all started for Jen Thyrion with a jewelry making venture in Vegas. Then, a move to Colorado opened the door for her first shop in Castle Rock — and within a year she had a fulltime business on her hands. Now Love Harper at The District Shops is Thyrion’s fourth location, and one of the largest vendors there. “I still sell jewelry, but along the way we kind of blossomed into a full-on boutique,” Thyrion shares. Today Love Harper carries clothing and accessories in addition to her original hand stamped jewelry, with hopes that shoppers can pair the two together to create a memorable and meaningful outfit. The boutique aims to carry clothing that appeals to a variety of body types and plans to start carrying plus sizes soon. Thyrion, who is open about her past struggles with body image and self-love, wanted Love Harper to be a place where any woman can find clothing to make her feel beautiful and confident. That goal has become even more personal as she prepares to welcome her first child this year — a daughter. “I’ve always loved the name, Harper. It’s kind of followed me throughout my life,” she laughs. “So of course, she’ll be named Harper, too.” October 2018 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle

OPEN HOUSE
Updated Colorado Rustic IT’S NO SECRET THAT DENVER’S POPULATION IS GROWING — AND THAT MEANS OUR REAL ESTATE MARKET IS EVOLVING. With more people, there’s more pressure to try to get your hands on a house as soon as it comes on the market - whether or not it’s perfect. Megan Quinn-Mayfield’s approach to house-hunting and selling is different, “Real estate can take a toll on you psychologically — it’s your home, it means a lot to you. So I really try to let my clients know that I am going to make sure that everything is going to be okay, through every step of the process.” That was the case for the owners of this five-bedroom, four bath house in Platte Park. The detached, single-family boasts outdoor space, a finished basement with 10-foot ceilings, and a massive master bedroom with a luxurious bathroom.

OPEN HOUSE
(C ON TI N U ED)
Quinn-Mayfield sold the house to its current owners in 2011 after it was freshly remodeled, and is now helping them sell the house as they look forward to their move to the suburbs (Quinn-Mayfield is also taking the lead on finding them their perfect home in suburbia). Platte Park isn’t known for its huge lots, so this 3,900-square-foot home had to make use of its space. The three car garage ate into a part of the backyard, but the covered patio makes the outdoor space useful for all 300 days of Colorado sunshine. THE PERFECT FAMILY HOME This house boasts enough bedrooms for a large family and has enough living space to keep the home from ever feeling crowded. Whether the kids are downstairs in the basement or playing under the watchful eyes of their parents in the main floor great room, there’s space in spades. BUILT FOR THE HOME CHEF The open concept living space means that the chef will never be left out of the good times of a dinner party. With plenty of countertop surface area, a gas range, stainless steel appliances, and a double oven (perfect for Thanksgiving!), cooking in this kitchen is a treat, not a chore. UPDATED COLORADO MODERN Throughout the houses, there are touches of Colorado inspiration. Dark wood is reminiscent of homes in the mountains, and the stonework on the base of the kitchen island and up the mantle brings the outdoors in. Paired with the bright countertops and modern appliances, the house balances a rustic, cozy vibe with sleek finishes. 54

THIS FALL, HANNAH MOON OF STYLED BY HANNAH MOON, IS ENCOURAGING YOU TO TRY SOMETHING NEW, AND TO EMBRACE THE TRENDS EMERGING. One big trend she’s been pushing? Animal print. “At all of my appointments this past month every woman has told me, 'Oh no, I don’t do animal print,' but when they trust and experiment a little, and let me show them, they love it.” Moon, who is currently styling the bright and tailored looks you’ve seen on KUSA-Channel 9’s Daily Blast Live, didn’t have a linear path to fashion. Growing up, she was inspired by her mother and grandmother’s “curated” wardrobe, but she resisted the stereotypes associated with going into fashion, and instead went into marketing. A few years, and (of course) a fashion blog later, she found herself being pulled into the industry she initially thought she would avoid. But a lifelong interest in fashion and a knack for mixing patterns and colors like it’s no big deal have brought her full circle. When you scroll through Moon’s Instagram (@styledbyhannahmoon), it’s pretty clear that Moon was destined for a roll in fashion. In picture after picture, she sports bright colors, bold patterns and trends straight off the runway — and she makes it look easy. 56

FALL FASHION AUDIT WITH HANNAH MOON ARTICLE CAROLYN DAVIDSON | PHOTOGRAPHY LADD FORDE
To update your wardrobe for fall the Hannah Moon way, there are a few rules.
DON’T BE AFRAID OF COLOR OR PATTERNS. “Animal print to me has always been a staple, but for most people, it has been an accessory,” Moon explains. “But all of a sudden in 2018 we're seeing animal print come back as the main piece of your outfit.”

For all her love of eye-catching colors and patterns, Moon does believe there’s such a thing as being too bold. “I believe full force in mixing modesty and sexiness. Make it interesting, but in a subtle way.”

CLOTHING AND THE MATERIALS WE USE TO MAKE THEM IS IMPORTANT. I SAT DOWN WITH MARGARET TULLIS, AN INSTRUCTOR FOR SHUTTLE, SPINDLES AND SKEINS, TO GET A CRASH COURSE ABOUT THE FIBERS WE WEAR EVERYDAY.
Fiber Facts 101 ARTICLE SAM TRUEHEART WHAT IS A NATURAL FIBER? A natural fiber is anything from a plant or animal that can be spun into a material for knitting, weaving and other techniques for clothing and other goods. SHEEP Oftentimes sheep is what comes to mind when discussing wool. And that’s no surprise because 90 percent of the world’s wool comes from this animal. “There are hundreds of breeds of sheep,” explains Tullis. “In Colorado, it is mostly Corriedale and I have a friend that has a Jacob.” Many knitters and fiber artists enjoy working with sheep wool because it produces a springy yarn and dyes nicely. ALPACA Alpacas come from the camel family and originate from the South America region. This hair can feel a little more luxurious and less itchy than its sheep counterpart, but it’s often mixed together with sheep wool for a stronger texture. “A lot of yarns are mixed now with Alpaca wool together because of the Alpaca drooping or not having the springback,” says Tullis. “The two of them together gives you a springier yarn.” LINEN Linen originates from the flax plant. “Both Linen and Hemp are bast fibers that come from the base of the plant,” says Tullis. A bast fiber is collected from the inner bark of the plant and is often a soft, flexible material. Linen is often worn during summer months because of its breathability and coolness once it’s in its manufactured state. COTTON Cotton derives from the cotton plant and grows in a boll to protect the seeds. Cotton is a tricky fiber to pick, so the invention of the cotton gin helped this soft fabric become a cheaper, common household clothing item. In fact, it is the most widely used natural fiber in clothing today. HEMP Hemp comes from the base of the Cannabis sativa plant. It is a rough fabric and can difficult to spin and produce locally. “They have to track it from seed to finished product the same way recreational and medicinal [cannabis] is, even though it doesn’t have any THC,” says Tullis.
