Man's Best Friend M

y whole life I have grown up with dogs. So, it only made sense when I moved out of my parent’s house at 18, I would get my own pup. Despite the stress of leaving the nest and being out in the real world for the first time, my first move as an independent woman was to get myself a furry best friend. That’s when I got the cutest black lab puppy I had ever seen and named her, Mimi Zephyr Labinel. Shortly after I got my little man, Ziix the pug. It’s fun reminiscing how many experiences we have been through together. College stories, to graduating, moving twice and now here we are in Denver. Happy and enjoying every day we get to share together. One of our favorite weekend summer activities is hiking. Which is why we're featuring dogfriendly hikes in some cooler (literally and figuratively) high elevation towns. And don’t miss our favorite modern pup picks for your dog and home. Since it’s the pet-themed issue, we couldn’t start a cat vs. dogs battle royale, so we showed a little love to our feline friends, too. Check out our interview with the Denver Cat Company’s Founder Sana Hamelin. Enjoy the rest of your summer with your family, friends and fur-babies.

MARKET (CON TI N UED)

T

here is just something about a farmers' market — strangers smile

and wave, and everyone is happy to be enjoying a day in the sun. I am not sure if it’s the delicious treats, precious pink flowers or the abundance of pups, but a farmers' market is a hard place for me to resist. As a Colorado girl, I love being outdoors as much as possible and exploring my neighborhood.

Earlier this summer, one of my favorite stops for dining and drinks, Union Station, added a farmers' market in collaboration with Boulder County Farmers' Markets. As one of my favorite weekly pastimes, combined with one the best locations in Denver, I couldn’t be more excited about the addition to the city. There are a few staples I am always sure to pick up on a visit to the market: 1) A fresh bouquet of flowers; 2) as many tomatoes as possible; 3) fresh bread; 4) something new that I haven’t brought home before. Growing up, our house was always filled with fresh flowers — I can almost smell the lilies right now. To this day, my favorite way to spruce up my house is adding fresh blooms. I find myself drawn to The Fresh Herb Company at the Union Station Farmers' Market, and it's easy to see why. Their blooms are like works of art and the owners, Kristy and Chet Anderson, truly have a passion for growing beautiful flowers. They even host a field-to-vase, four-course dinner each year for a one-of-a-kind dinner experience, among their thriving flower farm. MARKET (CON TI N UED)

As Coloradoans we are so lucky to be surrounded by nature and some wonderful farms. The Union Station Farmers' Market is overflowing with produce from local growers. I always snag the big and beautiful heirloom tomatoes from Rocky Mountains Fresh — I am pretty certain there was one the size of my head. I also fill a bag with as many cherry tomatoes as possible. They are so sweet, and I love snacking on them throughout the week. I love the pride each vendor takes in their stand — and Black Cat Farms truly does. Their vegetables are gorgeous, and I always enjoy chatting with Owner and Chef Eric Skokan. Chef Skokan uses his farm as a source of creativity and attends the Union Station Farmers' Market weekly with his freshly harvested veggies. The new recipe card they provide each week is such a nice bonus (see pg. 32).

28

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | August 2016

Baked goods at a farmers' market are a thing of beauty. I love stopping at Raleigh Street Bakery because their beauty is also behind their bread in supporting the community. Their community bread share program is a great way to get weekly bread service. Also, the Denver Skyline on a loaf of bread is a pretty fun hostess gift. The best thing about visiting a farmers' market is sampling local things that you may not know are in your own backyard. I always do my best to bring something home that I haven’t before. Fruition Farms provides cheese to many local restaurants including one of my favorites, Mercantile. The combinations they come up with are absolutely heavenly. A tote like mine is perfect for the farmers' market, for any day actually. During the summer months, I often carry a large tote around with me, like this one from H&M ($34), because we are always out and about running from activity to activity, and I need something that will carry farmers' market finds, towels for the lake, picnic treats and even my laptop when we are traveling. My favorite monogrammed clutch lives inside just in case I need to run to a more formal occasion. | Denver Lifestyle + Fashion Blog | DenverDarling.com Follow @denver.darling

| MAKING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR FARMERS' MARKET |

• Forget your cards and bring some cash and small change. Not only will this help you avoid some potential fees but cash is a great way to keep tabs on your spending. Trust us — you're going to want to buy everything. • If you're looking for the cream of the crop, make sure to get to the market early. Limited items will be the first to go. • For the hot deals, go to the market later in the day. It may be hotter, but you might be able to get some last minute deals. Vendors sometimes prefer giving a discount to lessen the load with packing up. • Bring a bag or backpack from home that's sturdy enough to carry all of your goods and fresh finds. • Let the natural, super-fresh flavors speak for themselves with simple recipes because that's the best part about the farmers' market. Fresh produce!

THE BRIGHT SIDE WITH BLACK CAT FARM

P

ost Saturday farmers' market visit, you're going to need some recipes for all of that freshly picked produce. A summertime

classic is sweet cornbread, and Black Cat Farm's very own Chef Eric Skokan gave us his special recipe. Served in Panzanella salad or with ribs and collard greens, it's a perfect app for a night of grilling, camp-

ing out under the night sky or just as a midsummer night’s dessert. *Expert Tip | With this recipe, it's time to break out the cast iron.

Chef Eric's Cornbread DRY INGREDIENTS (OR BLACK CAT PRE-MIX)

2 cups cornmeal 2 cups all-purpose flour 4 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 cup sugar or sweetener (i.e. maple syrup, honey) 2 teaspoons salt WET INGREDIENTS

4 eggs, beaten well 1/4 cup neutral-tasting oil (grape seed oil) 2 cups milk Note: Eric says you can use whatever leftover dairy that you have in the house (i.e. half-and-half, cream, buttermilk). BAKING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. Grease a cast iron skillet or baking pan for the cornbread. 3. In a bowl, combine and thoroughly mix the dry ingredients. 4. In another bowl, successively combine and thoroughly mix the wet ingredients. 5. In three or four batches, fold the dry mix into the wet mix, being careful to work the batter as little as possible, barely incorporating the dry mix into the wet one. 6. Pour the batter into the cast iron skillet or baking pan and place in oven. 7. When your kitchen smells like cornbread (12–25 minutes), remove the cornbread from the oven. Stick a toothpick in the middle from the oven, halfway down. If the toothpick is clean when retrieved from the cornbread, it is finished. If some batter clings to it, return the skillet or pan to the oven, wait five minutes and try again. 8. Enjoy! 32

DESIGNS BY NATURE

GETTING INSPIRED BY THE OUTDOORS WITH MTN LAB DESIGN

F

rom the outside it is hard to decipher what is “work” and what is “play” at MTN LAB design. Finding inspiration for Harris Hine and Rudy Unrau (founders of MTN LAB design)

is a constant and always-changing endeavor. Whether it’s skiing backcountry runs directly from their shop, mountain biking trails they have built throughout the property or carving a marble sculpture, inspiration, passion and a connection to nature drive this start-up out of Conifer, Colorado. MTN LAB design is a design and lifestyle studio based in the Colorado Rockies. Started by Unrau and Hine in the spring of 2015, this small shop is building everything from sculptures and furniture to custom motorcycles and boats. Sourcing most of the materials themselves from right here in Colorado, common materials used at the LAB include carved pine roots, marble, local river stones and wood slabs responsibly sourced from the Front Range. 34

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | August 2016

“We’re finding that as we grow, we are constantly diversifying.” Unrau says. “We didn’t start MTN LAB design to be pinholed as a particular type of design firm; we wanted to create something that is greater than the sum of all its parts. We have the workshop, tools and ability necessary to build anything we can dream of ... why would we want to build just one type of thing?”

The Cat Café FROM PERSONAL PET TO PUBLIC.

C

olorado is rich in a great many things. Having only been exposed to the area for three months now, I am already beginning to see where the different ideals, hobbies and interests of the natives fit in. Locals adore their cultivated food, music, nature and those jagged mountain summits that greet the sunrise every morning. Regardless, it is apparent that the people here love their outdoor activities. They are enamored with what interests them —– and boy are they dog lovers. Admittance of being a cat lover here may result in piercing stares and even scoffing comments within certain circles. You’ve been warned. Sana Hamelin, owner of Denver Cat Company, has sought unto herself to bring resolution to the age-old question: cats or dogs? At the cat café, opened in December of 2014, the question is not one of cats or dogs, but rather one that draws from our hearts the love for animals in general. This theme is concurrent in mostly everyone, so why not combine two of the loves that people have

38

out here? Hamelin has successfully accomplished this with the cat café, where people from all walks of life can come in for a piping mug of tea or coffee, curl up on one of the couches with their favorite books or friends and play with any of the multiple affectionate felines under her foster care. Although many people around the world believe that cats can have wavering attitudes, Hamelin negates this by working directly with rescue groups who provide her with healthy animals that would fit in with a multitude of environs: namely a public café-type setting as well as a home setting. “We foster cats who would do well in our environment — they are outgoing or social, they like people, they don’t like being in a cage and they do well with other cats,” Hamelin says. The cat café is not by any means inviting to only one type of person. All are welcome to enjoy the company of our furry friends, and who doesn’t love a coffee or pastry break DenverCatCo.com (or both) during that hectic 3929 Tennyson Street midweek grind? According Denver to Hamelin, everyone does.

“… A respite for the lonely traveler, a refuge for someone wanting to give and receive love from friendly animals and a place for people to find their best friend. [It is] a community space that adds something joyful to the equation.” Hamelin made her future goals clear. The concept continues to grow exponentially due both to her creative mind and the donations she has received thus far. The café is ready to take the next step and leave its doors open to the Denver nightlife. Hamelin will be hosting wine nights where locals can relax over a glass of Pinot and play with the fostered cats. Her following idea, once fully conceptualized, is to open a fully realized cat bar. DE-DOG YOUR SPACE Don't get us wrong, pups are the best roommates, but we could all use a little de-dogging from time to time. 01/// TOY TROUBLE | Let us guess. Your

toy basket is overflowing and there have been more than a few occasions where you almost experienced death-by-tennisball. Why is that tennis ball always at to the top of the stairs, anyways? SOLUTION | Throw away any that are

destroyed beyond repair and only save mendable toys that you will actually mend. Keep your pups all-time favorite toys and divide them in half. Keep half stored away and every month rotate the toys. Also, consider donating extra toys to Maxfund no kill shelter or any local humane society. 02/// COUCH CONUNDRUM | The easiest

way to avoid this problem is prevention. Although, for those of us who can't say no to Fido on the couch, (or sneaky pups that do it on the sly) there's a solution to consider. Your dogs are your friend, but I'm sure your human counterparts don't appreciate hair everywhere when they visit. SOLUTION | Find a nice throw and drape

on your dog's favorite spot. Then simply wash the throw once (or twice) a week, and this will take care of most of the fur problem. For those extra stray hairs, use Murphy's soap and a rag to clean leather couches, or a squeegee with a rubber edge for upholstery. 03/// DIRTY FLOOR DILEMMA | Every house

eventually gets dirty floors, but when you have dogs that process speeds up tenfold. Door mats and wiping down paws with microfiber towels is a good preventative tool, but you'll still need to get creative with cleaning. SOLUTION | If you want to get really

21st-century with it, we highly recommend Roomba the robotic vacuum. For extra tidying up with carpets, it's best to use carpet cleaning products only on known stains or stink spots and look for eco- and pet-friendly products. For hardwood floors, grab that Murphy's soap you used for the couch, a mop and add water.

In honor of the "Dog Days of Summer" issue we teamed up with Maxfund no-kill animal shelter and adoption center to share how you can help dogs and cats in need in our community. Maxfund's mission is to give all cats and dogs that come through the doors, whether they are injured, sick, abandoned, or abused, a second chance at life. Here's how you can help Maxfund reach their mission.

MAURICE | 8 yrs old | This sweet

& active guy loves long walks and tennis ball time.

BOLOGNA | 9 yrs old | He's a tiny guy who is low maintenance and loves to be held and pet.

ONYX | 4 yrs old | She gets along

with dogs, cats and kids. Onyx has a special diet and is looking for a home where she can spend most of her day around people.

SOX | 9 yrs old | This sweet girl loves a sunny spot and prefers to be the only fur-baby.

01/// ADOPT!

So far, Maxfund has adopted out more than 29,000 cats and dogs. Here are a few featured pups and purrs looking for forever homes. 02/// VOLUNTEER

Volunteers are the core of Maxfund's success, and they are always accepting new applicants. Not only do volunteers provide love and attention, they help with walks, socialization and cleaning, too. 03/// FOSTER

Become a temporary parent until shelter animals find their forever homes. Usually, foster dogs and cats have medical needs, surgery recovery, hospice care, nursing/pregnant, behavioral needs or just need a break from shelter life. 04/// DONATE

Cash donations are how Maxfund got started in 1988 and continues to be an important factor in the shelter's success. There are different ways to donate on Maxfund.org/ Donation-Page. You can also donate toys, bedding, unopened food, cleaning supplies and office supplies.

05 HARPER | 11 months | This sweet

kitten needs a loving home.

FANTA | 9 yrs old | He loves to be

05/// SPREADING THE WORD

The easiest way to help is by opening the dialogue about shelter pets' needs and always spaying and neutering your pets. Maxfund.org @maxfund 720 W. 10th Avenue, Denver 720.266.6081
