MEET WITH OUR ARBORISTS
We believe in a city where trees flourish, not just slowly disappear. For over 13 years, our arborists have been dedicated to maintaining Chattanooga’s tree canopy. As development expands, we offer sustainable solutions for both residential and commercial properties. Healthy trees start with healthy soil, and our advanced soil care program ensures trees thrive, adding value to homes and neighborhoods. Let us help your family’s trees and landscape thrive for years to come.

Happy Fall, Y’all!
I am thrilled to be writing my introductory letter as the new publisher of this incredible magazine. I have met so many wonderful people during my first few months and I look forward to meeting many more. I appreciate you, our readers, as well as all of our partners who make this publication possible. We have many great things in the works that will further enhance our ability to bring you interesting stories, important information, and unique features.

Cooler weather, changing leaves, football season and most of all Halloween make me so excited for this time of year. I have loved Halloween since I was a kid. My parents would dress my brother and me up every year in homemade outfits. Most years we were vampires, some years superheroes or cats. We couldn’t wait until it got dark so we could go gallivanting around the neighborhoods collecting candy and treats. There was one house in particular where everyone waited in line because they gave out silver dollars. Coming home and dumping out our hauls extended the fun because that is when the trade game began. I was lucky because my brother didn’t like chocolate. Yep. I happily gave up all of my candy corn, Laffy Taffy and SweetTarts. As an adult, I am still a huge ambassador of the holiday, so much so, to my family and friends I am known as “The Queen of Halloween.”
Another thing I get very excited about is great food. In this issue, we feature some of the best local restaurants Chattanooga has to offer. You will find many of my favorite places and if you haven’t been, I encourage you to try them all. Not only do they have unique and delicious dishes that you won’t find anywhere else, many of these special places offer creative beverage selections. From BBQ and Ramen to Italian and craft cocktails, with a little bit of everything in between, Chattanooga’s food scene is second to none. Our city is home to some of the best local chefs and bartenders whose specialties are sure to please any “foodie.” And if coffee is your thing, we are spotlighting some of the area's favorite java joints, perfect for this cozy time of year.
I hope you discover a new favorite restaurant, a new delicious dish or new tasty beverage. I also hope you are uplifted and energized by reading about the many people and places that make the Scenic City so special! Cheers!

While traveling in the late 2000s, founder Brion Voges had a life-changing encounter with Neapolitan pizza. Recognizing the pizza’s absence in Chattanooga, he teamed up with his father-inlaw, the seasoned food industry expert, Jim Richards, with the shared ambition to bring this unique pizza experience to our community. Seeking to hone his craft, Brion trained under Roberto Caporuscio, renowned owner of Kesté in NYC and president of the APN (Associazione Pizzaiuoli Napoletani). Under Caporuscio’s guidance, Brion delved into the fundamentals of Neapolitan pizza-making, mastering the art of dough preparation, dough pressing, and the artful cooking process. This marked the beginning of his profound pizza education. Over the course of the past seven years, FIAMMA Pizza has continuously evolved and grown. Brion Voges and his dedicated team have acquired invaluable knowledge and skills, incorporating them into the FIAMMA experience that is part of the vibrant Chattanooga restaurant scene.

Home isn’t just a name, it’s our mission. Born from the shared dream of four friends, we envisioned a space that transcended the typical bar scene. The menu features elevated simplistic items with a singular focus; great taste. We craved a sanctuary in the heart of Chattanooga, a place where warmth radiates from the exposed brick walls, and the clinking of glasses mingles with the murmur of lively conversation. With its cozy interiors, warm lighting, and an inviting atmosphere, Home embodies the essence of camaraderie and comfort. It’s a place where patrons are not just customers but friends, drawn together by the shared love of innovative cocktails and the irresistible charm of Southern hospitality. We believe in the power of community, in the simple joy of gathering, and in the transformative magic that happens when people connect over a shared experience.

Giardino is a small neighborhood restaurant nestled away along Missionary Ridge serving Italian-inspired cuisine with produce and proteins sourced from local farms. The inspiration for our name came from the neighbors who helped us to plant and nourish our garden. It will always be a reminder for us to remember our roots and the community it took to build this place, and in turn, we hope to provide a space where folks can gather to enjoy great, seasonally-driven food paired with one of the best wine and cocktail lists in Chattanooga!

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL

For our annual Food & Drink issue, we had the pleasure of catching up with local restaurateur and owner of Frazier Five & Dime, George Lewallen.
I found my way into the restaurant business in college, and it resonated with me more than any class I took. I’ve always loved to cook, but first and foremost, I’m an extrovert and love to entertain. I also love the organized chaos that is the restaurant world – it’s kind of what I thrive on as well. I love seeing the results of the work that goes into it and that no two days are the same.
The location itself was a bar called Northshore Grill when I moved here in 2007. It was a staple of the Northshore community, and our friend group spent more time there than we’d like to admit. When the space became available, I thought it would be so cool to bring back a vibrant bar/restaurant to the Northshore, but with a new look.
The building in the 1950s was called the Southern Five and Ten Cent Store. This was during the prime era of

the five and dime stores, so being that Chattanooga is very proud of its history, we thought it would be fun to play on the historical components of the building.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE RESTAURANT’S ATMOSPHERE?
We want to offer a location for the locals of North Chattanooga that has a good bar and is a good place to hang out, but also offers a bit more on the dining side of things. We created what we feel is an atmosphere where you'd want to take your wife or family to dinner, or meet up with a group of friends, and enhanced it with the nostalgia of the Northshore both past and present.
The Fried Oyster Salad is one of my favorites. It’s fried oysters on a bed of house-made potato salad and topped with lightly dressed arugula. I like to say fried oysters and potato salad come from the same backyard, so why not put them together, and the fresh arugula complements both components. The way all those flavors play together is fantastic.

One of our more popular dishes is Trout. We use locally sourced rainbow trout and it's served with charred broccolini along with pecan butter, which in my mind, is the star of the show. It is a pureed pecan spread that almost tastes like a New Orleans praline. The way those flavors work together is just unbelievable.
Chattanooga is still very much a meat and potatoes town, so we have some staples like The Dime Piece Smash Melt. It's two beef patties done smash-burger style with bacon jam and an Alabama white sauce. It has sweet and spicy components which play together well on our homemade bread.
We make our own breads and desserts and curate all our meats in-house. There are several unique sauces and spreads made in-house too. The fact that we do so much in-house sets us apart as well as showcases the skill set that we have in our building. We're taking it from the ground up and we have our fingerprint on every dish.
Our cocktails are top-notch, and we have an excellent bar staff. Our cocktails are unique, balanced, and tasty. Our top seller is the Fear & Loathing, which is a play on a mezcal Paloma. The Thirsty Cougar is not far behind it and is our ode to the espresso martini, which are all the rage in Chattanooga. I’d put our old fashioned, the Frazier Fashioned, against anybody in town.

We want to be a neighborhood spot that has everyday accessibility. We want you to be able to come as you are, sit down and have a wonderful meal, and not worry about if what you’re wearing is formal enough. When you walk into the restaurant, the bar is the first thing you see, and I think that speaks a lot to our concepts and our restaurant group. Being a part of the community is important to us and it doesn’t get more communal in our industry than a 25-seat bar. We feel the first thing you need to get right is creating an atmosphere where anybody can walk in either by themselves
or with friends and family, have a great place to sit and eat, and maybe make a lifelong friend.
Our food, from top to bottom of the menu, is also top-notch. Every dish is well thought out and executed with care and precision. I would put our flavor profiles up against anybody in the city.
Stop in Frazier Five & Dime located at 16 Frazier Ave to enjoy fine dining in a casual atmosphere. To explore the menu and make a reservation, visit www.frazier5and10.com or call 423-541-9655. Also enjoy Frazier Five & Dime’s sister restaurants Tremont Tavern, Parkway Pourhouse, The Feed Co. Table & Tavern, and 1885 Grill.

Crabtree Farms, a nonprofit group founded in 1998, resides on land that has been agriculturally active for nearly two hundred years. While it does not have a perfect history, this rich land has found its way back into the community’s hands. When the McGauley family gave the land to the city of Chattanooga, it was then leased to the nonprofit group that focused on providing food and education to the city. Last year, Crabtree Farms commemorated 25 years of service to the community with the planting of twenty-five trees.
Crabtree Farms grows food for neighborhoods throughout Chattanooga, selling some of its produce at their onsite seasonal farm stand which is open on weekends. The farm also participates in the Main Street Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays as well as having a few select wholesale accounts with restaurants in Chattanooga. “We also donate food to local community fridges and we are exploring relationships with our community’s food banks to find ways to get fresh food into the hands of those who struggle with food access,” adds Lena Banks, Director of Development and Communications at Crabtree Farms.
At Crabtree Farms, plant starts are offered through both donations and plant sales. The plant sales usually occur

during the biannual festivals held at the farm where attendees can enjoy live music, delicious local food and hayrides while shopping for fruit trees, annuals, herbs or perennials. “We really try to hand select items best suited for this area. We are trying to increase the amount of native plants we have available within the community,” Banks told us. The organization gets most of its funding through these festivals, held in the spring and in the fall, allowing the farm to continue growing enough plant starts to donate to other community gardens and the surrounding area.
These festivals and sales, however, are not just about supporting the farm, they are about supporting neighbors. Banks explains, “We also support other local producers and farmers by carrying their products at our farm stand and have collaborating events with our plant sale and things of that nature. We promote community engagement through free events and educational activities. We have monthly potlucks for our community gardeners, classes, within this space for about 3,500 community members each year.”
Education is another core tenant of Crabtree Farms, where those interested will find classes and workshops catering to all ages. From cooking classes, canning workshops, candle-making and even classes taught in Spanish, each class is
unique and hosted by local educators. Learning is a passion to be fostered, not merely stopping by what can be grown in the soil, but also how it can be used. One unique offering allowed participants to learn how to dye with naturally grown indigo from the farm.
Another wonderful, engaging program offered is the Crabtree Community Garden Program where participants are given free garden beds and supplies. More recently launched is The Mary Navarre More Emerging Farmer Mentorship program. Through this program, eager participants are given a small plot of land on the farm along with the tools and educational resources that will guide them from seed to market production on an urban farm.
Crabtree Farms is a busy farm with no intention of slowing down its work. With a smile in her voice, Banks puts it best, “It’s a lot of work but the payoff is really beautiful. Food is life. It touches every social determinant of health. Our life expectancy and quality of life are directly tied to the kinds and amount of food available to us. Not to mention, there is so much research tied to the mental and physical benefit of green spaces and outdoor recreation. Personally, I think it’s a lot of work that is worth it.”

There’s a new coffee shop on the scene and it’s much more than a place to grab a cup of joe before jetting off to your next task.
Located in Hixson, Rêve Coffee and Books is focused on creating a “third place”–that is a communal space outside of work or home–for the Chattanooga community. Owner and barista, Aniston Williams has built Rêve around the idea of community, a love for reading, and education.
“People need people,” she explained. While many coffee shops cater to those who live life on the run, Rêve encourages its patrons to slow down, visit with a friend, and pick up a new book written by a local author. In fact, the original idea for the shop was centered around books. Williams dreamed of owning a bookstore, but knew she needed something more to get customers in the door. So she’s leaning into her past experience as a barista to make the dream come true.

While you’re in the shop, you can peruse the wide range of locally written books on their shelves. Ranging from children’s to adults, fantasy to non-fiction, Rêve has a book choice for everyone. And, they are starting a new “Blind Date With a Book” program.
When they aren’t serving up tasty drinks and tantalizing reads, Aniston is running a tutoring program after school. As a successful educator, she’s determined to create a space that supports learners in small-group settings. This, combined with their local author events, writing workshops, and read-alongs for children is destined to make Rêve Coffee and Books a staple in the Chattanooga community.
You can find out more about Rêve Coffee and Books on their website, Facebook, and on Instagram.

Owner, barista, and educator Aniston Williams not only runs the shop, she also makes most of the extracts used to flavor their drinks. Williams is excited for their fall lineup to debut, namely, the Toasted Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte. If you had the opportunity to try their Blueberry White Chocolate Latte over the summer, you won’t want to miss out on their fall flavors.
Rêve is also excited to launch a selection of soups to really provide some comfort and relaxation to patrons who come looking for good company or a great book. The cheerful atmosphere suits all age groups and is the perfect place to bring friends for catching up.
Don’t be surprised if Williams asks you what types of books pique your interest as she loves nothing more than introducing people to the local talent available on the shelves in the store.
