These are the Days
August has arrived and with it comes that familiar mix of lazy summer days and the subtle shift toward routine. The pools are still sparkling and popsicles are still in high demand, but the backto-school buzz is building just under the surface. As much as we love long, carefree days, there’s something special about this time of transition—a chance to savor what’s left of summer while preparing for fresh starts ahead.
This issue is all about two of our favorite things: kids and pets. Whether they’re chasing fireflies in the backyard or curling up at our feet after a full day, these lovable, lively companions remind us to stay present and playful. From the silliness of a toddler’s giggle to the unwavering loyalty of a rescue dog, these are the moments that ground us and often make the best stories.
Personally, August is a full and joyful month in our household as we gear up to celebrate my daughter’s third birthday. Cue the balloons, birthday cake, and the inevitable glitter. At the same time, I’m preparing for another school year in my role as an assistant principal. It’s a balancing act of checking supply lists and party prep, but it’s also a beautiful reminder that these are the days. These are the ones we’ll look back on—the messy, meaningful, sun-soaked stretch between summer and structure.
Inside this month’s issue, you’ll meet families and businesses who put kids and pets at the heart of what they do. Rosie Mae’s Alpaca Farm offers an unforgettable way to connect with animals and nature. The Bunny Hive opens its doors this month, bringing a whimsical, enrichment-focused space for little ones and their grown-ups and The Sandbox Boutique continues its long-standing legacy as a go-to for thoughtful gifts and first-day favorites.
You’ll also find stories of animal advocacy and community care—from Ship Happens’ mission to support local cat rescues to the vital work of the Pet Placement Center. Lavender Medi Spa reminds us that taking care of others starts with caring for ourselves—because the best version of us is the one our families need most. Whether it’s a quiet facial or a renewed commitment to wellness, it all matters.
So as you gather backpacks, light birthday candles, or take one more sunset stroll with your pup, take a deep breath and soak it in.

WHERE BEAUTY MEETS MEDICINE & SELF-CARE MEETS SCIENCE
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL
After years of practicing in traditional medicine, Nurse Practitioner Sharlotte Manley found herself at a crossroads. The career she once considered a calling was becoming a source of burnout and affecting her wellbeing. “I loved my patients, but the system was pushing me to rush through appointments and treat symptoms instead of people,” she recalls. “That just didn’t align with how I wanted to practice medicine.” This realization led to a period of deep reflection, thinking through the joys and stresses of working in traditional medicine, and eventually, a bold reinvention.
For Sharlotte, it was a personal experience that lit the path forward. After receiving Botox for the first time, she noticed not only visible changes in her skin, but also a surprising lift in her mood. The realization sparked questions including whether beauty and wellness were truly separate, and could they be integrated into a single, healing experience.
A self-described lifelong learner, Sharlotte dove headfirst into the world of medical aesthetics. She spent the next year immersing herself in certifications, training programs, and research. “I just couldn’t get enough,” she says. “The more I learned, the more I realized how naturally this field aligned with my clinical background and my passion for whole-person care.”
In August 2023, she brought that vision to life by opening Lavender Medi Spa, a place where beauty meets medicine, and self-care meets science. “The name was inspired by the calming, healing nature of the plant, something I want every client to feel the moment they walk through our doors,” says Sharlotte.
At Lavender Medi Spa, clients experience more than just esthetic services; they are welcomed into a space where wellness and appearance are treated as two sides of the same coin. Patients have access to a blend of both esthetics and wellness services including Botox, microneedling, medical weight loss programs, Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, and IV infusion therapies.
From injectables to IV therapy, each service is designed with long-term vitality in mind. “I love helping people—whether it’s through reducing a wrinkle, easing anxiety with a vitamin infusion, or helping someone balance their hormones so they feel like themselves again,” Sharlotte says. “When we don’t feel good, we can’t show up in life as our best selves.”
In the realm of esthetics, Lavender Medi Spa offers traditional facials and specialized AquaFirme facials to rejuvenate skin. AquaFirme facials cleanse and exfoliate the skin and includes red light therapy and ultrasound frequency technology to stimulate collagen production deep within the skin and rejuvenate skin at the cellular level.
For clients looking for a solution to frustrating hair loss, Lavender Medi Spa offers needle-free hair restoration using ultrasound frequency and plantbased exosomes to promote natural hair growth.
Additional advanced aesthetic treatments include Botox and microneedling to soften fine lines and scars, and PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) microneedling, where a client’s own blood is processed to isolate healing plasma, then infused into the skin to boost collagen naturally. “It’s regenerative medicine at its most elegant,” Sharlotte
“Whatever brings them in, we meet them where they are, and help them leave feeling stronger, calmer, and more confident.”
Hormones affect so much more than just mood and hot flashes. They influence brain function, bone density, cardiovascular health—everything. With BHRT, we address the root, not just the symptom.
explains. “There’s something powerful about using your own body’s healing potential to transform your skin.”
Lavender Medi Spa’s medical weight loss program combines the power of FDA-approved medications like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide with lifestyle coaching focused on sustainable change. Sharlotte prioritizes safety by sourcing medications exclusively from 503B-certified pharmacies, which are held to the highest standards for compounding, testing, and quality assurance. “If I’m prescribing something, I want to ensure it’s not only effective but safe, consistent, and pharmaceutical-grade,” she says.
In conjunction with the medication, Sharlotte always circles back to holistic wellness and ensures that patients are equipped with education and tools to make healthy choices regarding food, exercise, and building sustainable healthy habits. Although medication plays an important role in healing and beginning the path to wellness, Sharlotte prefers finding alternative ways to holistically address wellness that moves patients towards a life less dependent on those medications.
Perhaps one of the most transformative offerings at Lavender Medi Spa is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). Sharlotte has developed a deep passion for hormone optimization after years of witnessing the gaps in conventional care. She treats men and women experiencing symptoms related to hormonal imbalance, including low testosterone, thyroid dysfunction, cortisol dysregulation, and the transitions of perimenopause and menopause.
“Hormones affect so much more than just mood and hot flashes,” she explains. “They influence brain function, bone density, cardiovascular health— everything. With BHRT, we address the root, not just
the symptom.” The protocols focus on personalized hormone testing, continuous monitoring, and the use of plant-derived bioidentical compounds that closely mimic the body’s natural hormones.
Although many of Lavender Medi Spa’s clients are adults, Sharlotte emphasizes that adolescents and young adults can also benefit from services. The office offers medically supervised weight loss for adolescents 14 and older using approved protocols. Teens can also receive customized facials designed for acne-prone skin at a significantly reduced rate and IV infusions are available to support athletic performance, recovery, and immune health.
“We’ve even supported student athletes preparing for big competitions and treated Ironman participants with pre-race IVs,” Sharlotte says. “It’s incredible to see how much of a difference these therapies can make.”
At Lavender Medi Spa, wellness is more than a service, it is a lifestyle, and whether the goal is relaxation, weight loss, or boosting personal health, the team at Lavender Medi Spa offers expert guidance and care. “Our team is a close-knit group of professionals who truly care about our clients’ well-being—we bring not only skill but heart into everything we do. When someone walks through our door, we see them as a whole person with unique and changing needs. One day someone might come in for an IV before a big trip. The next year they’re getting Botox for their wedding,” Sharlotte shares. “Whatever brings them in, we meet them where they are, and help them leave feeling stronger, calmer, and more confident.”
Located at 1334 Mackey Branch Drive, Suite 103 in Chattanooga, Lavender Medi Spa blends medical expertise with spa-like care. For more information and a full list of services, visit lavendermedispa.com or call 423-251-1694.

ROSIE MAE’S Alpaca FARM
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL
Less than fifteen minutes from downtown Chattanooga, nine alpacas stand ready to greet new friends at Rosie Mae’s Alpaca Farm. The farm, which is owned and operated by Max and Maegan Lewis, came about from a somewhat unusual request from their daughter, Rosie.
“Rosie asked for alpacas for Christmas when she was three,” shares Maegan. “Of course, we told her no, but we did go and look at two local farms.”
In the process of visiting the farms, two very important things happened. First, Rosie fell in love with an alpaca named Vanna, who is now her best friend. Secondly, they found out that alpacas are hypoallergenic, which is a key component for Maegan and her allergies.
“When we saw how much Rosie loved the alpacas, we ended up buying them in December of 2019,” says Maegan. “At the time, we didn’t have a barn or fencing, but thankfully, my husband is super handy. He built the barn and the first set of pastures, and we brought our alpacas home in April 2020.”
FOR THE LEWIS FAMILY, LIFE ON THE FARM BRINGS LOTS OF JOY.
THE family loves HAVING A PLACE
Over the next two years, Max and Maegan added a second daughter, Sparrow, to their family and continued to expand the space to include a boutique and coffee shop before officially opening to the public in November 2022.
Exploring the farm and meeting the alpacas is free. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the ambiance as well as the many fun games available. The farm has plenty of outdoor seating, a play area for kids, and a small kid’s library, making it a great destination for family outings or gathering with friends.
For visitors who want a more hands-on and interactive experience, bags of alpaca feed are available for a just few dollars. “Alpacas are super unique, and they each have their own personalities, which is really fun to watch,” says Maegan. “Alpacas also don’t have top teeth. They just have a dental pad up top and teeth on the bottom. They have a split top lip that they use like fingers, so they are very gentle.”
For those worried about an unhappy alpaca spitting at them, Maegan reassures, “They do spit at each other, and you can get in the crossfire, but it’s not super common.”
The coffee shop serves fresh, locally roasted Mean Mug coffee, a selection of pastries, and gourmet popsicles while the boutique features alpaca products alongside wares from local vendors. “We have stuffed alpacas that are made out of real alpaca fiber and the needle felted alpacas. We also have other alpaca products such as blankets, socks, clothing, headwear, and keychains,” explains Maegan. “My favorite part, though, is that we have products by local vendors in our shop. These are small

businesses that don’t have a storefront, and so they’re able to put their stuff in our boutique.” Items range from pottery and handmade cards to candles and hats.
For the Lewis family, life on the farm brings lots of joy. The family loves having a place for their own family, and others, to make life-long memories. “The animals themselves are amazing and it’s just fun because kids don’t get to see them every day. So, they get to experience how cool alpacas are,” shares Maegan. “We also love getting to meet so many people from all over the world. We’ve had visitors from every state and over 15 countries.”
Rosie Mae’s Alpaca Farm, located at 550 Old Birmingham Highway in Wildwood, Georgia, is open MondayThursday 8AM-12PM, Friday and Saturday 10AM-6PM, and Sunday 12PM-5PM. The farm can also be reserved for private tours, birthday parties, weddings, and other special events. The Bunny Hive
A SOCIAL CLUB REDEFINING EARLY CHILDHOOD ENRICHMENT AND CAREGIVER SUPPORT
Centrally located on the North Shore, The Bunny Hive Chattanooga is poised to open its doors this August, bringing a fresh concept in family enrichment to the Scenic City.
Billed as “a social club for little ones and their grown-ups,” the studio promises a calendar packed with sensory-rich classes, photo-worthy décor, and plenty of chances for parents, grandparents, and caregivers to gather—coffee in hand (available in the retail section or BYO!)—while babies and toddlers learn through play.
The Bunny Hive story began in suburban Atlanta in 2019, when friends Brittany Schmid and Katy Doar, new moms hungry for community, decided to combine the energy of a boutique fitness studio with the warmth of a living-room playgroup. Their prototype struck a chord; in just six years, the brand has blossomed into a constellation of more than 30 franchised studios stretching from Mountain View, CA, to Richmond, VA—each united by stunning interiors and a curriculum that balances Montessori-inspired exploration with plenty of winsome charm.
At the helm of the Chattanooga location is Beth Forrester, a community-rooted entrepreneur and local mom of two whose résumé spans retail operations, marketing, and customer experience strategy. While previously living in Atlanta, Beth discovered The Bunny Hive while searching for enriching, joy-filled activities for her own young son. The brand’s emphasis on meaningful connection—both for caregivers and kids—resonated so deeply that she set out to bring the concept to her new hometown of Chattanooga. With a deep love for this community and a belief that parents deserve spaces to feel seen, supported, and inspired, Beth is building something truly special for Chattanooga families.
Step inside the light-filled studio and you’ll find a weekly rotation of core classes for ages 0-5 offering everything from art and ballet to culinary exploration and exploratory play. Every class pairs child-sized furniture and high-quality materials with a trained facilitator who keeps the emphasis on joy, curiosity, and social-emotional growth. Because caregivers participate side-by-side, the program doubles as a playdate—no scrambling for sitters required.
Membership also unlocks access to monthly grown-up socials (think wine-and-watercolor nights), exclusive member-only events, and themed pop-ups ranging from newborn sleep seminars to permanent-jewelry bars. During school breaks, the studio offers seasonal campstyle programming where older siblings are welcome—but with the same family-friendly format where caregivers are encouraged to join in the fun. It’s this intentional blend of connection, creativity, and care that has made The Bunny Hive a go-to gathering space for young families in cities across the country.
To celebrate the Chattanooga launch, the studio is offering a Founding Membership at $150 per family, per month (three-month minimum). The package locks in a discounted rate for as long as the account stays active and includes: Unlimited core classes; Exclusive member-only meet-ups; Discounts on seasonal pop-ups; $100 off private-event rentals.
Founding spots are limited. Membership tiers will further include 8-class and 4-class monthly memberships, and single-visit passes will be added once regular programming begins. Ahead of the grand opening, The Bunny Hive Chattanooga will be hosting Demo Classes around town and Preview Classes in-studio the week leading up to opening day.
Birthday party on the horizon? The Bunny Hive’s picture-perfect interior is available for private events starting at $450 (or $350 for members). Rentals include full

While we support all animals, our primary focus is on partnering with lesser-known, local nonprofits that help care for our feline fur babies. This includes supporting TNR (Trap, Neuter, and Release) programs and helping find homes for adoptable kitties. Many of these smaller organizations cover costs out of their own pockets. To support them, we donate 50% of proceeds from every cat-related merchandise item sold to a featured organization each month. In addition to raising funds, we also aim to educate our customers about these groups. We regularly feature adoptable cats in our store and on our social media channels.
