Our Womens’ Issue

I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. Our grandmothers, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course, with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms…But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to amazing women in our local communities.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

And remember, we love hearing from you! If you have interesting, fun, and meaningful stories to share or are a business looking to grow within our local community and the surrounding area, we would love to hear from you. Contact John.Meyer@citylifestyle.com for advertising opportunities and Ana.Meyer@citylifestyle.com for editorials or call us at 973-944-1440.

We look forward to seeing you around town!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers in our lives!

TOUR A Historic Mansion

A UNIQUE AND FUN OUTING THAT ALSO PROMOTES HIGH-LEVEL MEDICAL INITIATIVES

How often do you get to tour a beautiful home while supporting a worthwhile cause? Mansion in May, the signature fundraiser for the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center, offers this wonderful opportunity every two years. This year, it will take place at the historic Wildfair estate in Chester Township from May 1 to May 31.

On 55 acres, it has many unique architectural details. “Some of the roof lines are slanted so the doors are angled, the walls are incredibly thick and the whole house is covered in fieldstone,” says Mary Courtemanche, event co-chair along with Barbara Ruane. “There are some really great quarter-moon windows and other funky details.” There’s also an incredible two-story mahogany library with a circular staircase.

The house was originally built in the 1880s and then added onto in the 1930s and 1990s. There are a total of 38 interior spaces and 17 landscape spaces.  On the property itself, there’s a pond, a barn, a tennis court, a chicken coop, and a sugar house.

“The setting is exquisite, and there’ll be a sculpture in the woods that people will be able to see from the back of the house,” says Barbara. “The barn is going to be transformed into a bistro, and with adding a tent, we’ll be able to seat around 200 people.”

In the bottom level of the barn, there will be lovely boutiques. “You could really make it a destination for the day,” she says. “You can tour the house and gardens, have lunch with your friends, and then shop in the boutiques.” Twenty percent of the proceeds from these sales go to the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center to facilitate its mission.

This mission is very important. Every Mansion in May event supports Morristown Medical Center (MMC), and this year the monies raised will benefit its new Proton Therapy Center. With help from these proceeds, the hospital hopes to start offering this cutting-edge cancer treatment next year.

Since its inception in 1974, Mansion in May has raised over $14 million. “Our goal this year is to raise $2 million, which is a stretch, but that’s what we’re hoping to do,” says Barbara. An average of 22,000 people attend each event.

Finding these homes and homeowners who are willing to open their doors to the public is not an easy task. “We have a mansion search committee and they have a lot of good contacts with Realtors® and designers in the area,” she says. “We often get houses by word of mouth and the owners of our last house, Three Fields, are friends with the current owners, who also attended the last event.”

In regard to tickets, there are a number of different options. A general admission ticket gets you onto the property and into the house. There are tickets for private tours, and tickets for an evening preview party and an afternoon tea which includes a presentation on sustainable gardening. There is also Motown at the Mansion. “It’s on a Saturday night and it’s a sit-down dinner,” says Barbara. “We’re going to dance the night away to an orchestra playing Motown music.”

The women, who are also long-time board members, lead a team of over 60 volunteers who are on about 25 different committees.

“Everyone has a different focus, so there’s a committee for ticketing, for marketing, for the design,” says Mary. “There’s another committee that puts together the journal that all visitors receive. It’s an incredible resource because it lists all the designers involved, so if you want to update an  interior space or enhance your garden, you will have access to their contact information.”

Mary and Barbara, who were also the co-chairs of the previous event, find a lot of satisfaction in their roles. “It’s a fun way to give back,” says Barbara. “We spend a lot of time and energy, but it’s really worth it in the end when you see how our funds are used. We were invited to the grand opening of the Gagnon Institute of Bioskills Training and Innovation [at MMC] after we had given them $1.65 million from the last Mansion in May event.”

Adds Mary, “When we give money, it’s usually for a project that the hospital is actively working on and so we get to see the results pretty fast. It’s incredibly gratifying.” And, they are always looking for more volunteers.

“We’ve made great friends with the women and men who volunteer,” says Barbara. “They’re dedicated, they’re hardworking.”

CHEF LAUREN COVAS BRINGS BOLD PORTUGUESE COOKING TO YOUR KITCHEN
ARTICLE BY BENJAMIN MEYER

When it comes to blending tradition with innovation, Chef Lauren Covas knows how to deliver. As the owner of Chef Lauren Covas Catering and a twotime Food Network Champion, she has captivated audiences and palates alike with her bold, flavorful dishes. Now, she’s bringing her culinary magic to kitchens everywhere with her debut cookbook, Little Portugal: Bold and Flavorful Portuguese Cooking from My New Jersey Kitchen.

Growing up in the vibrant community of Little Portugal, New Jersey, Chef Covas developed a deep love for the hearty, satisfying dishes that define Portuguese cuisine. With recipes like Rustic Clams, Classic Seafood Rice, and Caramelized Fig and Prosciutto Bites, her new cookbook is both a heartfelt homage to her roots and a practical guide to recreating these iconic flavors at home.

We sat down with Chef Covas to learn more about her inspiration, and what readers can expect from this exciting new release.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS TRIBUTE TO PORTUGUESE COOKING?

“Growing up in Little Portugal shaped not only my cooking style but also my entire outlook on food and family. The community was always alive with aromas of seafood, roasted meats, and freshly baked bread. I wanted to capture that sense of warmth and tradition while also incorporating my professional experience as a chef. My goal was to create recipes that honor my heritage but are also approachable for home cooks.”

Chef Lauren Covas, Covas Catering, two-time Food Network Champion and Little Portugal Cook Book Author

AS A TWO-TIME FOOD NETWORK CHAMPION, YOUR CULINARY TALENTS ARE UNDENIABLE. HOW DID THOSE EXPERIENCES SHAPE YOUR APPROACH TO CREATING RECIPES FOR YOUR NEW COOKBOOK?

“ Competing on Food Network was both exhilarating and humbling. It pushed me to think creatively under pressure and trust my instincts. That experience gave me the confidence to put my own twist on classic dishes. I wanted the cookbook to reflect that same spirit of innovation while staying true to the traditional flavors I grew up with.”

YOUR COOKBOOK BEAUTIFULLY BLENDS GOURMET FLAIR WITH PORTUGUESE TRADITION. HOW DID YOU STRIKE THE PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN HONORING YOUR HERITAGE AND SHOWCASING YOUR CREATIVE, AWARD-WINNING CULINARY TECHNIQUES?

IF YOU COULD RECOMMEND JUST ONE DISH FROM YOUR COOKBOOK TO SOMEONE WHO’S NEVER TRIED PORTUGUESE CUISINE, WHICH WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

“Definitely the Rustic Clams. It’s the perfect combination of savory broth, garlic, and tender clams—a real crowdpleaser that highlights the essence of Portuguese coastal cooking. But I’d also recommend trying any dish from our Shareables section. They’re easy, light, and fun to make—anyone can cook these recipes with no training, and they’re a great way to experience the flavors of Portugal in a relaxed, shareable way.”

“Competing on Food Network was both exhilarating and humbling. It pushed me to think creatively under pressure and trust my instincts.”

“ I think it all comes down to understanding the core flavors and then building on them thoughtfully. For example, I love using bold marinades and fresh herbs, but I also like to introduce techniques that elevate the dish without losing its authenticity. It’s about keeping the soul of the recipe intact while adding a little something extra.”

AS A SUCCESSFUL CHEF, CATERER, AND NOW COOKBOOK AUTHOR, WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU AND CHEF LAUREN COVAS CATERING?

“There are lots of big things coming up! Our book tour is kicking off soon, which will lead to so many exciting new collaborations. Make sure you stay tuned—there’s so much more to come!”

Chef Lauren Covas’s passion for her craft and heritage shines through every page of Little Portugal. Whether you’re hosting a gathering or simply craving something special, her recipes promise to bring the heart and soul of Portuguese cuisine right to your table. Don’t miss your chance to experience it for yourself—pick up a copy today and taste the magic! https://www.chefcovascatering.com/

A PERFECTLY BEAUTIFUL PARTNERSHIP

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA PHOTOGRAPHY

COME IN AND EXPERIENCE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

Cindi Galiher knows beauty. She has spent her entire career in the beauty industry working for well-known brands such as Revlon, Laura Mercier and Borghese. She has also been trained as a makeup artist by world-renowned makeup artists Mercier and Linda Cantello.

When her long-time hair stylist, Kathy Korab, mentioned she wanted to open her own salon, Cindi wanted to be a part of this new adventure. She had been out of the business for a few years, and missed it.

“I had my first child at 45 years old, so I stayed home for a little bit,” she says. “Plus, my husband and I moved a lot and we built all of our own houses, so I oversaw that as well.”

The timing couldn’t have been better. Her daughter was getting older, and she was ready for something new. “This particular salon fell into my lap,” says Cindi. “The previous owner wanted to retire, and my husband and I bought the building. Kathy and I then opened GLAZE Salon. That was six years ago.”

While Kathy is now a co-owner, she’s still active as a stylist. She’s very well known for her craft in the area, so she’s always in high demand.

“We blend really well as partners because we each have our different strengths and weaknesses and it has just worked,” says Cindi. “Owning the salon means we have the freedom to make our own decisions on how this business is going to run. We knew from the beginning that we wanted a place that was going to be different and we wanted to offer that.”

A soon as clients walk in, they are warmly greeted and offered a beverage. It could be a cappuccino, a seltzer, or if it’s later in the day, a mimosa, a glass of wine, or a beer.

Kathy Korab & Cindi Galiher

Its large, modern space located in Chatham’s Townsquare building complex feels like it’s situated in the heart of Manhattan. In fact, many New Yorkers drive out of the city to come to GLAZE because it doesn’t only cater to everything hair - although that’s the main draw - but it’s also a whole experience. After all, its tagline is “Where beautiful hair is just the beginning.”

GLAZE has expanded into doing lashes, microblading for eyebrows, nails, waxing, and more. They have a high-end line of beauty products that include Lafco and NEST New York®.

“We also brought in a line from Jao Brand, and their claim to fame is their all-natural enriched oil for the face and body called Goē Oil. Along with that, we have some innovative products like the Capillus Hair Growth Cap for people who have thinning hair and have recently added a HIFU machine for tightening skin.”

Clients also love browsing the retail part of the salon, where they can pick up a candle, diffuser, greeting card, reading glasses, jewelry, handbags, and other special gifts for themselves or others. There are personalized baskets for the holidays, which were a huge hit during Christmas.

In addition to Kathy, there’s a large group of stylists of all ages and specialties who can cater to a varied demographic, whether it’s a young man getting a haircut for the prom, a mom who needs a great new color, or a grandma and grandpa who want to look their best for a child’s birthday.

The two women have created a people friendly (and pet friendly) space for clients and staff. Cindi believes her background in cosmetics and business has given her a solid foundation to run a company, and Kathy has made a great partner. She’s the person who is there day to day and is wonderful with clients.

“I’m also a very firm believer that advertising is one of the ways that you let people know who you are, where you are, and what you do,” says Cindi. “It’s very important to me to make sure that people see our faces and know us.” She says people come in and they’ll recognize her and Kathy as the owners because they’ve seen them in magazines.

“They’re getting to know exactly who we are as business owners and people.” The salon gets phone calls all the time from people who have read or heard about GLAZE and want to experience it for themselves.

Cindi and Kathy are glad they took the leap into being business owners, and everything they’ve tried has led to success. “If you plan to open your own business, find a direction where you can differentiate yourself from something or somebody else,” says Cindi. “We have new stylists that we just hired at the end of last year, and we’re always changing things up. The sky’s the limit.”

“WE BLEND REALLY WELL AS PARTNERS BECAUSE WE EACH HAVE OUR DIFFERENT STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES.”
