August 2025 –Kids & Pets
Our Kids and Pets issue is always one of my favorites. Maybe it’s because of the immense joy that children bring to our families and the significant impact they make on our communities.
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment, and we are happy to highlight the best for our kids in this issue.
And who could forget pets? They too are members of our families! Their special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry, feathery or swimming in a tank friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
We have two adorable little Havanese, Lucky and Max, who like our kids, have very different and distinct personalities. They are a major part of our family and together we continue to build amazing memories with them and our children.
In this issue we are highlighting a few fun adventures to share with your family and friends this summer, as well as top medical and educational experts for our children in our very own communities.
We hope this issue inspires you to try something new!
If you have interesting, fun, and meaningful stories to share or are a business looking to grow within our community and the surrounding area, we would love to hear from you. THREE LOCAL SPOTS FOR BIG UNDERWATER THRILLS—NO BEACH REQUIRED.
Under the Sea, NJ-Style
ARTICLE BY BENJAMIN MEYER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Whether you’ve got a curious toddler, an animal-obsessed teen, or you’re just looking for a fun indoor day that’ll wow the whole family, these aquariums deliver big on wonder and fun.
Here’s the thing about summer in New Jersey—some days, it’s blazing hot, some days it rains just when you planned to hit the beach, and some days… the kids (and let’s be honest, the adults) just need a break from the backyard. That’s when we say: grab your crew and head under the sea!
We’re not talking about hopping on a flight or making a trek down the shore. We’re talking about three incredible aquariums—right here in our Garden State—that are packed with ocean adventures, playful penguins, and even a few surprising land animals (hello, hippos!). Whether you’ve got a curious toddler, an animal-obsessed teen, or you’re just looking for a fun indoor day that’ll wow the whole family, these aquariums deliver big on wonder and fun.
Here are three of our favorites that we visit all the time—and trust us, they never disappoint.
ADVENTURE AQUARIUM – CAMDEN
The one with hippos, sharks... and a bridge of pure bravery.
If you’ve never been to Adventure Aquarium, make this the summer you go. It’s got over 15,000 aquatic animals and some seriously jaw-dropping exhibits. You can literally walk over a tank full of sharks (on the world’s longest shark bridge!) and then pop over to say hello to their famous Nile hippos who like to nap, swim, and generally steal the show.
Our favorite part? The Little Blue Penguins! These tiny waddlers are adorable, curious, and incredibly entertaining to watch. There’s also a stingray touch tank (yes, you can actually touch them!), a whole realm dedicated to sharks, and a tunnel that surrounds you with sea life. Plus, they go all-out for seasonal events— think Shark Summer the summer, Fintastic Pumpkin
Glow in the fall, and Christmas Underwater featuring Scuba Santa swimming with sharks in the winter. https://www.adventureaquarium.com/
LIBERTY SCIENCE CENTER – JERSEY CITY
Where science meets splashy, hands-on fun.
Okay, so Liberty Science Center isn’t technically just an aquarium—but their Hudson River exhibit is one of the coolest things for curious kids who love water and wildlife. It’s designed to be super interactive, with tanks built at kid-level so they can get up close with turtles, river fish, and more. There’s even a water table where kids can direct the flow of the river, build up sediment, and see how it all moves.
Kids love pretending to be scientists in mini lab coats, and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch a hands-on ecology experiment in progress. Bonus: you’re right across from NYC, so you get skyline views, too. This one’s great for younger kids who love a good splash and a good science moment. https://lsc.org/
SEA LIFE AQUARIUM – EAST RUTHERFORD
Inside American Dream, but feels like another world.
If you haven’t explored the American Dream Mall yet, this is the perfect excuse. SEA LIFE Aquarium is completely indoors (translation: perfect for rainy days or when it’s just too hot to function), and it’s like walking through a living, glowing ocean.
They’ve got over 3,000 sea creatures, including sharks, rays, and jellyfish, all swimming through exhibits themed like NYC. That’s right—sea turtles cruising past a miniature Empire State Building? Only here! The Ocean Tunnel is a total showstopper: you walk through a glass tunnel while sea life swims all around you . Kids love spotting the jellyfish and

touching sea stars in the interactive tide pools, and the behind-the-scenes tour gives a fun peek at how the magic happens.
It’s a smaller aquarium than the others, but it’s super stroller-friendly and easy to explore with younger kids. Plus, you can pair it with a ride on the indoor roller
coasters or a stop at the ice cream shop next door. Winwin. https://www.adventureaquarium.com/
So whether your crew is into science, sharks, penguins, or just needs a cool break from the summer sun, these NJ aquariums are a guaranteed hit. This summer, skip the screen time and dive into a day that’s totally splash-worthy.

This family-run farm invites guests to pet, feed, and bond with their certified herd of alpacas, many of whom are stars
in their own right with ribbons to prove it. While there’s no charge to visit, donations are appreciated—and well worth it. The farm offers alpaca walking tours for a modest fee that gives kids and adults alike the chance to experience pure joy on four legs.
And don’t leave without exploring the farm’s gift shop—packed with lavender goodies, handmade honey, and alpacathemed gifts. If you’re lucky, your visit might even align with one of their outdoor “Farm to Table” dinners.
Both farms are weekend destinations that require advance reservations, and both are packed with wholesome, screenfree fun that’s sure to become a cherished summer memory.
So pack a picnic, grab the kids, and head out for a day of alpaca love and lavender fields—you’ll be so glad you did! bluebirdfarmalpacas.com , hiddenspringlavender.com
Fun Facts About Alpacas:

These captivating animals come in 22 natural colors, ranging from pure white to shades of gray, brown, and black.
Alpacas have been domesticated for thousands of years, primarily for their luxurious fleece, which is softer than sheep’s wool and hypoallergenic.
Alpacas communicate through a range of sounds, including humming, clucking, and even screaming when alarmed.
A PLACE FOR BEAUTIFUL SMILES
This practice makes dental care fun and comfortable for both kids and adults

When children (and adults) walk into The Smile Den in Florham Park, they feel as if they’re entering a magical place instead of a clinical dental office. With its nature designs, calming colors, reading nooks, and play area, it’s a place where people of all ages can feel welcome and comfortable.
“One of our main goals is to have this feel like a home away from home for our patients,” says Dr. Amie (pronounced “uh-me”) Shah, a board-certified pediatric dentist. As a child, she had a lot of issues with her teeth. “I was always so fearful, so I wanted to work in a field where I could make a difference for children.”
She and her sister, Dr. Purvy Shah, a board-certified orthodontist who treats both adults and children, founded the family practice last May. “I was always interested in healthcare, and I wanted an environment where I could make long-lasting relationships with patients,” says Dr. Purvy.
Although the aesthetics of the office are homey and fun, the treatments and equipment are all state of the art. There’s a dedicated consultation space with comfortable seating, and televisions in treatment rooms so children can watch Disney shows while undergoing procedures. There are also brushing stations for both children and adults to encourage oral hygiene.
Before children leave, they can visit the treasure tree and choose a prize for being good patients. “It’s a really positive experience where kids are leaving happy and want to come back,” says Dr. Amie.
Since children should start dental care and orthodontic care early in life, having a place that truly cares for them and their parents is critical. “I think a lot of adults have their own anxieties about going to the dentist, and they can sometimes unknowingly project these onto their kids,” says Dr. Purvy. “So, we focus on the whole family that walks through the door.”
It’s also really important for both sisters to help others less fortunate. “We started volunteering at a very early age - we were always geared towards giving back,” says Dr. Amie. “While I was
in dental school, I had the opportunity to do a couple of mission trips where I were able to go to another country and do pro bono dental work. Dentistry in general is just a really rewarding profession.”
When not working, she and her husband Aman enjoy traveling. “I love to learn about other cultures and try different foods and cuisines and just learn about the world,” she says.
Dr. Purvy also enjoys exploring with her husband Shan and daughters, 5-yearold Maya and 3-year-old Diya. “We like finding different things to do together as a family such as trying new restaurants and traveling,” she says. “My sister and I also both love performing Indian dances at family functions too.”
To find out more about the doctors and The Smile Den, and to make an appointment, go to TheSmileDenNJ.com .
“IT’S A REALLY POSITIVE EXPERIENCE WHERE KIDS ARE LEAVING HAPPY AND WANT TO COME BACK,” SAYS DR. AMIE.

A PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO CHILDREN’S HEALTHCARE
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA PHOTOGRAPHY
Dr. Meredith Irwin knew she wanted to be a pediatrician since she was a child herself. “My dad was a nurse and worked in the nursing home industry, and so I was exposed to the healthcare industry through him,” she says. “I also loved my own pediatrician as a child.”
Today, she is a board-certified pediatrician. After working as a general outpatient pediatrician for eight years, she decided to take a different route after moving from Kentucky to Chatham, New Jersey, in 2022 with her family - husband, Justin Hurt, and children, 8-year-old Claire, twin six-year-old boys Dean and Everett, and Lily, their mini Golden Doodle.
“In my second job in Kentucky, I floated at different offices and filled in when needed,” says Dr. Irwin. “Some of the offices were busier than others, and I loved the offices that weren’t as busy so I could spend an hour with new parents and their babies, and talk to them without feeling the pressure to rush to the next patient. Developing relationships with families has always been my favorite part of my job.”
To provide this type of care, she established Little Nest Pediatrics, a Direct Primary Care (DPC) practice, in Chatham in February of this year. DPC is a healthcare model that prioritizes doctor-patient relationships, offering more personalized approaches to medical care. In addition to being able to spend more time with parents and children, parents have direct access to Dr. Irwin 24/7.
“It was five o’clock on a weekday, and I had a mom who was worried her child had an ear infection,” she says. “While I was willing to go to the child’s house, I suggested that she use the camera we provide to take a picture inside the eardrum.”
Dr. Irwin could see right away that it was infected and prescribed an antibiotic. A 10-minute conversation was all it took to get her child’s ear infection treated.
Another day, a patient’s dad called because his child had cut his finger. She told him to bring him into the office right away. “I was able to just glue it in five minutes.”
This convenience factor is a great benefit, and so is knowing that you will always see the same doctor who is very familiar with your child.
Dr. Meredith Irwin
Membership fees are reasonable, and in the long run, Dr. Irwin believes this model saves families money. “There are no copays, and you’re not getting any surprise bills. I’m also saving families from unnecessary urgent care and ER visits, which come with added costs.” Parents can use their HSA [Health Savings Account] if they have one to pay the monthly fee as well.
Andi Guariglia, mother of 3-year-old Andrew, is happy she chose Little Nest Pediatrics for her son’s care. “As a parent with young children, you know that they never get sick at a convenient time, so being able to text or call Dr. Irwin quickly makes everything so much easier,” she says. “She’s even come to my house once or twice when it was easier for all of our schedules.”
Another parent, Sara McMahon, also highly recommends Little Nest. “As the parents of a baby and toddler [Noah 2 ½ and Camilla 7 months], it was important for my husband and I to find a pediatric practice that was truly a good fit for our family. Dr Irwin is incredibly kind, patient, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. Her approach and style of practice is a true breath of
fresh air for busy parents who want to feel seen and heard when it comes to their children.”
Little Nest Pediatrics is also designed to be a welcoming and fun environment for kids. “As a mom of three kids, I know how miserable it can be to be stuck in a tiny little white room for no telling how long waiting for the doctor, so I wanted it to be a big open space,” says Dr. Irwin. “Kids can get up and move around, and there are toys for them to play with and keep them busy while I’m speaking with parents.” Afterwards, Dr. Irwin sends personalized visit summaries so parents don’t have to remember everything or take notes. Instead of always examining children on the exam table, Dr. Irwin will sit on the floor where they’re playing. At the end of every visit, they receive the key to the treasure chest. “There are various higher-than-average quality toys in the chest,” she says Most kids, says Dr. Irwin, are upset when they have to leave. “It’s a happy place for them.”

A LEGACY OF LEARNING
ARTICLE BY FRANK DILORGI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA PHOTOGRAPHY
WITH A NATIONALLY CERTIFIED STEM PROGRAM, ALUMNI-TURNED-EDUCATORS, AND A MISSION GROUNDED IN FAITH, ST. PATRICK SCHOOL PREPARES STUDENTS FOR LIFE’S NEXT CHAPTER.
St. Patrick School in Chatham stands as a beacon of academic excellence, rooted in Catholic tradition and a commitment to developing the whole child. For over 150 years, it has served families with a dynamic and values-driven education that prepares students to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
To begin, academic achievement is one of the school’s defining strengths. Students consistently perform above national averages in reading and math, and graduates go on to attend some of the region’s most prestigious high schools, including Delbarton, Regis, Xavier, and The Peddie School. These outcomes reflect the school’s emphasis on personalized instruction, intellectual curiosity, and a culture that celebrates learning.
Equally important, faith is central to daily life at St. Patrick School. As a Catholic institution, it fosters spiritual growth alongside academic development, encouraging students to see their education as a path to serve others with compassion and integrity. From liturgies and sacramental preparation to service projects and community outreach, students are formed in both mind and heart.
Furthermore, St. Patrick School serves children from preschool through eighth grade. Its intentionally small, close-knit environment allows for meaningful relationships among students, teachers, and families, and ensures every child is known, supported, and challenged. The preschool and elementary grades build strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, and social development, all within a nurturing, faith-filled setting.
To meet diverse needs, the Transitional Kindergarten program serves children who may need more time to develop social-emotional readiness or miss the traditional kindergarten cutoff. It provides a purposeful bridge that respects each child’s pace of growth and helps them confidently transition into the elementary program.
As students progress, the middle school experience at St. Patrick School is rich in both academic rigor and leadership opportunities. With an emphasis on high school preparation, students engage in advanced coursework, critical thinking, and collaborative learning. In addition to core subjects, they take on roles in student government, service leadership, and public speaking, developing the skills and confidence to thrive in the next chapter of their education.
At the heart of the school’s innovation is its nationally certified STEM program. Recognized by Cognia, a leading authority in educational accreditation, St. Patrick School’s STEM approach goes beyond science and math to include language arts, social studies, and the fine arts. Through inquiry-based, interdisciplinary learning, students gain experience applying creativity, analysis, and problem-solving across subjects.
For example, recent STEM projects have included second graders researching food deserts and designing rooftop gardens, and seventh graders exploring wildfire-resistant housing and the fireproof properties of certain strawberry plants. These projects highlight the school’s mission to cultivate thoughtful, compassionate problem-solvers who apply their learning to real-world challenges.
St. Patrick School’s excellence is also reflected in the people who lead it. Principal Dr. Christine Ross, a lifelong Catholic educator, brings decades of experience to her role and works alongside a faculty that includes many teachers who have served for more than 20 years. This remarkable stability fosters a deeply rooted culture of trust, tradition, and shared purpose. Calling the school a family is no exaggeration. Dr. Ross’s husband coaches the cross country and track teams, and their two sons are proud graduates of St. Patrick School.
Looking ahead, the community welcomes Father Jared Brogan as pastor of St. Patrick Parish, following the retirement of beloved longtime pastor Father Bob Mitchell. Father Bob has been the spiritual cornerstone of the school community, known for his unwavering support of students, staff, and families. His presence has helped shape the warm and faith-filled environment that defines St. Patrick School. Father Jared’s arrival marks a moment of renewal and opportunity for families eager to join during a meaningful time of transition. It is a time when long-held traditions continue, and academic excellence thrives within a faith-centered community.
We invite you to experience the warmth, spirit, and academic excellence of St. Patrick’s School for yourself. Whether you’re exploring options for early childhood or middle school, there’s no better way to understand what makes this community so special than to see it in action. Schedule a personal tour, meet the dedicated faculty, and witness how faith and learning come together to shape compassionate, confident leaders. Visit www.spschatham.org to learn more and take the first step toward joining the St. Patrick’s family.
